Brahmaviharas – From the teachings preached by the Buddha to his son Rahula (Ref)
“O Rahula, deepen your meditation on loving-kindness. Because if you deepen your meditation on loving-kindness, any resentment, hatred will disappear.
O Rahula, deepen your meditation on compassion. Because if you deepen your meditation on compassion, all harmful intentions will disappear.
O Rahula, deepen your meditation on sympathetic joy. Because if you deepen your meditation on sympathetic joy, any dissatisfaction will disappear.
O Rahula, deepen your meditation of equanimity. Because if you deepen your meditation on equanimity, any anger will disappear.”

Four Divine Abodes (brahma viharas) in Theravada Buddhism - 03
In the Maha Rahulovada sutta of the Majjhima Nikaya, the Buddha has instructed Venerable Rahula to meditate on the four brahma viharas in order to get rid of the negative qualities of ill-will, cruelty, discontentment and irritation.
"Cultivate the meditation of loving kindness. For when you cultivate the meditation of loving kindness, ill-will will be abandoned"
"Cultivate the meditation of compassion. For when you cultivate the meditation of compassion, cruelty will be abandoned"
"Cultivate the meditation of sympathetic joy. For when you cultivate the meditation of sympathetic joy, discontentment will be abandoned"
"Develop the meditation of equanimity. For when you cultivate the meditation of equanimity, irritation will be abandoned"
When hatred develops in one's mind towards some one else, cultivating three of the four brahma viharas towards that person will be an excellent way of subduing that hatred. In the Aghata Pativinaya sutta of the Anguttara Nikaya (collection of the Buddha's numerical discourses), development of loving kindness, compassion and equanimity has been described as three of the five techniques to subdue hatred towards a person.
"When one gives birth to hatred for an individual, one should develop loving kindness (or compassion or equanimity) for that individual. Thus, the hatred towards that person should be subdued"
The aim of concentration meditation is to cultivate a state of deep concentration or one- pointedness of mind by focussing one's attention on a single meditation object.
This state will be maintained as long as the attention of the meditator is completely absorbed into that particular object. As the concentration of the mind becomes deeper and deeper, different stages of calmness and joy called Jhana or deep mental absorptions arise which are free from any mental hindrances such as sensual desire (kamacchanda), ill-will (vyapada), sloth and torpor (thina-middha), restlessness and remorse (uddhacca-kukkucca) and sceptical doubt (vicikicca).
