TLOU really said: I’m gonna take every single minor character from the first part, flesh them out so we know them as people and what they had to do to get here, and then I’m going to change small details (like SAMS AGE and Frank being ALIVE) to make their ends so much more devastating.
hey guys, i know you all want updates to my bakery enemies comic! i AM still going to finish it, i have NOT given up on it, and i'm sorry this hiatus has been so much longer than i anticipated. getting the second wind i need to work on it can be kind of tough (especially since we're in the final stretch, so when i start working on it again i want to make it all the way to the FINISH), but it is still absolutely in development!
anyway, this is also to say, you don't need to tell me you want updates. I know you do, and I can't give a clear answer as to when the next update will be, because i'm not sure when that inspiration will strike... but... if you're going to ask for updates, please don't do it on my other works. It's kind of disheartening to have comments on a new, unrelated work say "but what about beau?". If you want to ask about beau, at least ask it on a beau-related post, please!
Splatoon 3: Side Order is good, but not great. I still highly recommend it, but if you care about the story, you're going to be disappointed. Quick review: spoilers ahead.
Side Order was the devs experimenting with Splatoon's gameplay loop. The campaign is a rogue-like, and it works amazingly well. Super fun, super challenging, building my deck and fighting through challenges with the stakes of resetting really scratched an itch in my brain. They did a great job with it.
Unfortunately, I feel like priority went to game design rather than story. Much of the mysterious artwork we saw in the first teaser trailer was completely unused; turns out, all of that was just concept art that never made it into the final product. Side Order failed to make me care about what was happening. I don't know why the protagonist had to be Agent 8; it could've been anyone else and the story would've worked the same.
Octo Expansion was the absolute peak of meshing story and gameplay. The campaign's hook is insanely strong; we immediately empathize with Agent 8 because we know from previous lore that octolings like her have been trapped underground for all their lives. We care about her fight to the surface because it's a fundamentally ideological fight for freedom. The plot stuff about Tartar and the Thangs is just nice set dressing; 8's fight for freedom is the real story.
There's none of that in Side Order. I don't particularly care about Marina's metaverse, even if it's tied to Octo Expansion's story. I don't know why Acht is there other than backstory stuff. It really feels like 8 is just told to do something and she does it because she's the protagonist; she has zero personal stakes or motivations in the conflict. This is a story blunder the devs did in Splatoon 3's default campaign––forgetting to give the protagonist a personal reason to fight––that I hoped would be fixed here, but alas.
What makes it worse is that the gameplay and story progression are completely out of sync. I beat the entire game on my third run in 4 hours. With each run, you get up to two keys to potentially unlock bits of story. That means you'll get about one piece of the story every two runs. There are twelve pieces of the story; I got the first and then beat the whole damn game. Now I have to go back and grind to see the remaining story when I've already beaten the final boss and resolved the conflict. I missed the entire story because I never had to reset because I blazed through the gameplay! It's just a real shame that I experienced everything without knowing... why it's happening. The final boss had me asking myself what the hell is going on because I don't know the backstory at all.
Again, I still really recommend. The devs did a great job, but Side Order remains in the shadow of Octo Expansion's incredible success. Like the default singleplayer campaign, there's just a lot of lost story potential here that, while not necessary, would have really elevated this DLC into something amazing.
it doesn't feel real to me fellas. but I don't have time to sit by and chat and unload unfortunately so I'll just drop this and be on my way, cya kind folks very soon ✌️
not professional but I liked how his eye looked goddang it. I knew I was screwing myself but I did it anyway
An idea: kdj's return isn't as simple as him just reappearing, but the stories that reform him appear as strains of text, fragments of rebuilding stories, that storm around him.
Hsy and yjh's voices and their hands grabbing his loosely-formed ones can help solidify him and keep him grounded while his soul and mind put all his stories back in place. I'd imagine internally he's quite scrambled for a hot second, perhaps reliving memories rapidly - and maybe even glimpsing worlds he dreamed of on the subway - so having anchors would help him not get lost in the deluge of information.
EDIT thanks to @princess-of-purple-prose for ID text that I didn't even think about WHOOP
[ID: An Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint comic of Han Sooyoung and Yoo Joonghyuk entering Kim Dokja's hospital at the end of chapter 551. Over the hospital bed is a whirling tornado of lines of illegible black text which spreads tendrils of letters throughout the room.
The two stare in surprise as the letters float through the room, their hair blowing back from the force. They both reach towards the vortex, where a hand composed of letters reaches back. The last panel shows them both sitting with Dokja on his bed and supporting him as he gasps, letters crawling over his skin and rising off him. End ID]
Hi!! I love your art style and all of your art a ton :) i especially like how you do clothing. Would it trouble you to do a little tutorial? Im working on fabric and clothing myself and tbh im already using your art as reference. I like how you draw fabric so fluidly as well as how detailed and realistic it looks!! Id really love whatever tips you could offer, but either way, thanks for sharing your art with us!
wow omg thank you so much??? i tried my best to explain a few things i try to keep in mind when i draw clothes, feat fashion icon sokka themselves.
(i’m also going to cheat and add this clothing tutorial by @chiptrillino because it’s an amazing resource with more good advice)
Fellas, is it gay if you look out upon your nearest and dearest, forgotten accomplice's home whose name is sickeningly familiar and this song plays in your head?
Do you think Gortash stood on his balcony, not knowing why but drawn to stare at the abandoned building Durge called camp?
Anyways, the song triggers even if you haven't romanced anyone in your camp, and while of course it is totally up for interpretation, I'm interpreting it as durgetash. I mean, beyond the obvious urge to spill and potentially drink blood:
"I feel your breath upon my neck.
A soft caress as cold as death […]
Your blood like wine, I wanted in
Oh darling, get me drunk and make me feel
Their memory is unclear, but the feeling isn't:
"I feel your heartbeat in my soul. Our futures bound, our bodies know."
What can't be remembered is still held within their body, and another version of that line changes to "our endings bound", which is only true of a few people- Durge can complete the game alone, but their ending is always shaped by their decisions surrounding Enver, the brain, and Bhaal.
Their endings are intertwined, they are each other's only equal, but Gortash's can only end one way (fight me, Larian)
"My only one, There's more to do, if we can only live. The clock won't stop and this is what we get".
Durge being hopeful to live, at least to finish what needs to be done- but some of their old guilt reflected in the prayer of forgiveness could be seen reflected here as well.
"It's not my fault
I'm not to blame
These ain't my sins
I broke my chains"
Whether sins here refer to their sin of admiring the chosen of Bhaal or the sins of murder forced by their father's hand, they very much did and might have continued to break chains since being tadpoled. Paired with 'get me drunk and make me feel', it almost reads more like it isn't their fault they fell for him, he tempted them and gave them all they needed to feel, to be a person for the first time.
Full lyrics below. There's so much more you could pull from it (And yes, I know this will also trigger if you play as Tav, but it has such a unique flavor for Durge)
---------------
I feel your breath upon my neck
A soft caress as cold as death (cold as death)
I didn't know you well back then
I blame it all on luck and vain (luck and vain)
Your blood like wine, I wanted in
Oh darling, get me drunk and make me feel
It's not my fault
I'm not to blame
These ain't my sins
I broke my chains
There's more to do
And I still want to live (live)
I feel your breath upon my neck
A soft caress as cold as death (cold as death)
I feel your heartbeat in my soul
Our futures bound, our bodies know (bodies know)
Your blood like wine, I wanted in
Oh darling get me drunk, invite me in
It's not my fault
I'm not to blame
Thesе ain't my sins
I broke my chains
There's morе to do
If I can only live (live)
I can't go yet
Don't let me die
I'll never stop
Until I'm done
But just tonight
Maybe I'll rest in peace
I feel your breath upon my neck
A soft caress as cold as death (cold as death)
I hear your heartbeat in my soul
Our endings bound, our bodies know
I can't go yet
Don't let me die
I want to live
My only one
There's more to do, if we can only live
The clock won't stop and this is what we get
