okay so i read your tgcf fic about catboy mu qing and it’s one of the most sensible in the fandom cause most of them (with exceptions) either a) add literally nothing to the canon or b) too badly motivated to relate to tgcf except for some unexplained tropes.

i meant: thank you. you’re a beacon of sanity in fandoms which manage to do both a and b unerringly. it’s almost funny except i’m almost genuinely giving up on writing because of it.

Oh, thank you so much for reading my work and reaching out to me about it! I really loved writing in my post-canon tgcf sandbox with @sarahworm, and I'm so grateful that others enjoyed what I feverishly couldn't stop writing for that entire summer.

(Writing within tgcf and learning as much as I could to better understand and engage with its cultural context is what brought me to my current, much beloved field within law, actually!)

I absolutely relate to and sympathize with how difficult it is to maintain motivation to write for and within a fandom when fandom isn't enriching you or nurturing your relationship with the story. Fandom can also be cruel and reactive, and I've had some horrible experiences with danmei fandom in particular. Those interactions really stripped layers from my joy and excitement.

I still write, though (albeit at a pace that shares my time and energy with my career and other hobbies), in part because I never set out to write for the fandom. I wrote because the potential and breadth of the story and character relationships were spilling out of me anyway. I participated in fandom and tried to be a part of fandom communities, but I also returned to the canon constantly and to sources on the canon's cultural, historical, literary, and political contexts, to feed my enthusiasm and maintain my motivation to write. Structuring my exploration of what I couldn't contain allowed me to direct the flow of those welling emotions into more meaningful, comprehensive engagement that then added weightier, more substantive layers to my relationship with the story, a fraction of which became fanfic that I loved writing and love reading.

Which is to say that motivation is fickle and fandom is draining; relying on either is exhausting. Resting and allowing yourself space from writing can be healthy and energizing. Taking a step back also offers an opportunity to consider why you currently write, why you want to write, in what environments and contexts you feel the most motivated to write, where you find inspiration for writing or where you might seek out novel sources of inspiration, and how you can nurture yourself and your relationship with writing.

You can stop writing too; sometimes giving up is letting go. But if you're not ready to let it go quite yet, keep in mind that a substantial and crucial part of writing is cultivating a relationship with storytelling, and there are many ways to do that without burning yourself out (including on communities that are draining rather than nurturing you).

just thought of another piece of evidence in support of the two solomons theory, and im sorry if you've said this already and i just missed it, but like. why DOES he have two sets of clothes? you're telling me that our solomon figured out a way to get to mc and stopped to pack???? i could be reading too deep into this but also like, c'mon. no way.

Considering the urgency of the phone call we have with him at the beginning, there is no way I would believe that he would take the time to pack a change of clothes!

We must always consider the possibility that the devs just… didn’t think of that. Honestly most of the things I point to could be due to this 😅

But! As far as I am concerned this is just additional evidence for the theory and I am even more convinced about it.

If the two Solomons theory turns out to be true, I will probably lose my mind lol. But I’m so glad that some of you agree with me because I thought I was crazy at first.

Gabriel felt a hand nudging his shoulder. Opening one eye slowly, he managed to turn his head. Before he could speak, the slight inhale of breath triggered a raucous coughing fit. His aching ribs taking the force behind it.

He felt a hand slip under his free arm, sitting him up.

A few more barking coughs escaped before he was able to take a wheezing breath.

"I'm sorry for waking you, love." Liam’s voice helped him focus in his groggy state. "You've been coughing pretty bad lately. I got your medication."

"Was...I..." Gabriel rubbed his tired eyes, even taking the slowest breaths hurt. "Disturbing...you?"

"No, of course not." Liam said handing Gabriel the little cup containing the cough medicine. He rubbed the professor’s back when another fit overtook him as he finished. "Still sounds bad, did you need your inhaler?"

Gabriel stared unresponsive for moment as if the question had not fully registered then he nodded. He immediately felt it in his hand, Liam closing his fingers around it.

"Thank you." Gabriel replied hoarsely then used it. "Helps...a bit." He leaned his head against Liam’s shoulder. "How are...you?"

"Worried about my poor boyfriend." Liam said softly, pulling Gabriel closer to him. "You sure the doctor said it wasn't bronchitis?"

Gabriel nodded but then buried his head into his elbow covering another cough. "Upper...respiratory infection." He massaged his chest. "Bloody...hell...that hurt."

"My poor professor." Liam whispered, adjusting Gabriel’s blanket.

Gabriel laid his head on Liam’s lap. "If I...don't fall back asleep soon, may I request...some tea?" His eyes fluttered closed.

Liam squeezed Gabriel’s hand, "Yes, love."

Oh wow I was looking forward to reading Meet Me at the lake but I've been hearing mixed reviews. It makes me kinda nervous cuz I loved the author's first book Every Summer After. Did you read that one?

i didn't read every summer after, and from what i've heard i think i maybe would've liked meet me at the lake more if i had read every summer after lol

i will say (without getting spoliery) there were definitely aspects of meet me at the lake that i liked and i think i just wanted the book to be more focused on that than the romance because for me, the romance felt flat.

however, i do think that if you're interested you should check it out! books are so subjective so what didn't work for me may work for you! if you do read it (and regardless of how you feel about it, if you liked it or didn't like it) i'd love to hear your thoughts on it
