Sometimes when I think about how the Silmarillion is the story of "the great and good", I remember that Galadriel's uncles got into a fist fight at a family function over which one of them daddy loved more. It's comforting to know we're all a little white trash, deep down.

Thoughts on Fingon
Tumblr media
A/N: I've had so many thoughts about his character for the longest time and thanks to a friend for giving me a boost, I feel a bit more confident releasing my interpretation of his character. Some may appear repetitive, but eh. Please, these are my headcanons, you don't have to agree. If you don't, refrain from negative commentary. Thank you :)
Tumblr media
‘Wise he was and skilled in voice and hand’, this part of Fingon’s description I noticed, tends to get overlooked a lot when characterising and building his persona.
He is a wise person, and may not have been the wisest like his fellow cousins or skilled in advanced magic like them, but Fingon was able to hold his ground when it came to academics and warfare. He wasn't all about athletic and lack wisdom and knowledge, he had brains (didn't use them rightly all the time lol).
Athletics was not the only aspect of Fingon’s life that he was skilled in, he was also articulate in academics. As the son of a prince, he would have outstanding scholars teaching him all topics throughout his adolescence.
Participating in court from a young age as he attended sessions with his father and engaging in small debates when he could. He was not the best or the most eloquent when it came to more advanced topics, but he was wise enough when challenging his opponents.
It wouldn’t be until his younger brother Turgon became of age and began attending court alongside him, he would take a step back to allow his brother to shine and show off his knowledge and enthusiasm. Fingon did become a little jealous of the trail of attention falling onto his brother more than him when he began showing more interest in politics.
But he did enjoy partaking in court, just not to the extent as his other family members.
Sports for him was a getaway/stress-reliever activity that he grew to enjoy and developed professionalism in certain areas. He excels well in horseback riding, ice skating (I like to believe Valinor had ice skating), archery, wrestling and other track and field events.
When it came to being skilled in hand in the warfare aspect, he was an extraordinarily proficient swordsman (he would have aided in training Maedhros after his recovery after all). Among his cousins, he would have ranked fourth (4th) or fifth (5th).
Following up with the previously mentioned quote, he was also his father’s commander during their time in Beleriand. As a commander, who later became the High King, he was somewhat of a strategist which leads to being a manipulator. Being skilled in hand and voice, especially the latter is primarily the reason why he can be charismatic and charming when he spoke to people.
Being able to easily influence persons to allow him to have his way (not in a conniving manner which he can do). He mostly used his voice to speak inspiration and strength into the hearts of people, lifting their spirits (a motivational speaker).
Then too, he may not of had the most political involvement in Beleriand or been the most outstanding commander under his father’s rule, but he was fairly decent even as a High King and wise. Being able to give orders on his own, plan and not always needing to rely on others.
He isn’t always the cheery, go-to sunshine prince charming or merry glittery prince, Fingon can also be a quiet and observant person who prefers to bask in his little world of troubles and be angst. Giving emotional support to others while humbly expressing his misery and trauma.
As much as he enjoys putting on the ‘people’s supportive and serotonin prince’ façade, there are days when he can barely hold himself together. He would quietly walk through the streets of Hithlum, mourning the loss of his brother, sister-in-law and other fallen comrades or find himself crying in the rain.
Furthermore, let's not forget that he was also a kinslayer. It may not be engraved into his blood or mind the way it would be for the Feanorians (allowing for murder to be a primary threat), but it does float around his conscience.
As much as he has regrettably apologised to himself and to his cousins, and viewed as one of the calmest of the kinslayers, he is still considered unpredictable. Being a friendly charming radiant prince still isn't enough for many, including himself, to forget what he is capable of.

Sindar didn't know plants grow untill the coming of the Noldor (maybe even the Fingolfin's host).
In the Years of Trees plants in the Middle-Earth and Beleriand were casted into sleep by Yavanna.
Just imagine this dialog
Celegorm: wait how do all these trees grow here in this darkness?
Random Sinda: what do you mean grow?
Celegorm:
Celegorm: this is trees. They do grow. Becoming bigger with the time passing.
Random Sinda: you're weird
Celegorm: ???

thinking again about these two quotes:
‘The Lord of Rivendell appeared torn between total joy and terrible sorrow, and his smile trembled as his daughter fell into the arms of the man she loved.
...“If I told the tale of all that Lord Elrond has lost, then the very air would weep. He is unused to joy without sorrow. But he will reach for joy nevertheless.”’
-from sansûkh by @determamfidd
‘... All Melian’s joy was touched with sorrow, and all her sorrow with joy, and it had been that way from the moment she drew on flesh like a gown and took Elu Thingol’s hand under the wheeling stars. For her Thingol had always been falling in marvelling love with her, all their long years together in the Thousand Caves, and he had always been at the same time being torn apart by dwarvish swords on his own treasury floor. She had always known.’
-from into the old abyss by @arrivisting
and i just— scream.
because these lines only make sense within the context of an immortal life where death and loss is only a very faint thought, but humanity has dealt with love and loss intertwined since the day we were born. it’s always been this way. it will always be this way.

So you know how elves are obsessed with magical objects that glow and produce light. I mean we have the stars, the two magical radioactive glowing trees and the shining, glowing accursed gems that makes people swear oaths and die right after.
But what about bioluminescence, they'd love that. Everyone would be flocking to the beaches of Alqualonde to see the algae/plankton on the shores. But the best of them all would be the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis). Whenever it was winter in Beleriand and Valinor, all the elves would journey to the north to watch the aurora near the Helcaraxë.
They'd be amazed by it - from all the different colours and patterns. And because its Middle Earth we're talking about, the aurora would produce images or music telling stories of old. This would be one of the many great creations of the Lady Varda had this been made.

I'm honestly not sure who is the worse half-brother: Feanor, or Sam and Dean Winchester.
What do you think?

nothing, just tolkien originally writing down the hobbit because his son christopher kept complaining that he'd change the details from night to night and then christopher later being so crucial in taking tolkien's notes and turning them into fully written novels of worldbuilding. loving someone to the point of creation and then having them help you finish the job.

sometimes we just need someone to pay enough attention.
for the longest time i had been trying to read The Lord of The Rings. everyone had sung the praises for it, over and over. i'd seen clips of the movie and it seemed like it could be fun, but actually reading it was fucking horrible.
my parents had the omnibus - all the books squished into one big tome - and in the 4th grade i started sort of an annual tradition: i would start trying to read TLR and get frustrated after about a month and put it back down. at first i figured i was just too young for it, and that it would eventually make sense.
but every time i came back to it, i would find myself having the exact same experience: it was confusing, weird, and dry as a fucking bone. i couldn't figure it out. how had everyone else on earth read this book and enjoyed it? how had they made movies out of this thing? it was, like, barely coherent. i would see it on "classics" list and on every fantasy/sci-fi list and everyone said i should read it; but i figured that it was like my opinion of great expectations - just because it's a classic doesn't mean i'm going to like experiencing it.
at 20, i began the process of forcing myself through it. if i had to treat the experience like a self-inflicted textbook, i would - but i was going to read it.
my mom came across me taking notes at our kitchen table. i was on the last few pages of the first book in the omnibus, and i was dreading moving on to the next. she smiled down at me. only you would take notes on creative writing. then she sat down and her brow wrinkled. wait. why are you taking notes on this?
i said the thing i always said - it's boring, and i forget what's happening in it because it's so weird, and dense. and strange.
she nodded a little, and started to stand up. and then sat back down and said - wait, will you show me the book?
i was happy to hand it over, annoyed with the fact i'd barely made a dent in the monster of a thing. she pulled it to herself, pushing her glasses up so she could read the tiny writing. for a moment, she was silent, and then she let out a cackle. she wouldn't stop laughing. oh my god. i cannot wait to tell your father.
i was immediately defensive. okay, maybe i'm stupid but i've been trying to read this since the 4th grade and -
she shook her head. raquel, this is the Silmarillion. you've been reading the Silmarillion, not the lord of the rings.
anyway, it turns out that the hobbit and lord of the rings series are all super good and i understand why they're recommended reading. but good lord (of the rings), i wish somebody had just asked - wait. this kind of thing is right up your alley. you love fantasy. it sounds like something might be wrong. why do you think it's so boring?

Curufin being defensive of Aredhel against Eol is nice until you get to the part where he's like "I can't believe you wed her without our gift or leave!"
Like, I know what a strain this puts on you, but can you not act like a dick for *three* seconds.

So I have a theory concerning Tuor since he was the only 'mortal to be considered an Eldar', and it's the opposite of Luthien's mortal fate.
So when Luthien became mortal in her second life, as the years passed she would soon suffer all the ailments of a mortal. Her hair thinning, dropping out, turning grey, her skin wrinkling and her body shrinking due to changes in the bone structure just like an ageing mortal. Luthien is also counted as an immortal considered to be a mortal in her second life since she suffered the same fate as them when she died.
So for Tuor, it's reverse, like the Curious Case of Benjamin Button reverse. At the time he sailed into the Undying Lands, he was in his 50s, thus already aged and wrinkling and turning slightly grey. As he arrived in Valinor and time passed, his hairline grew back, the wrinkles slowly disappeared, the greyness in his hair returned to his once golden hair and gone is his fragileness and strength was returned. Now that his youthful features reappeared, eventually, they would reach a limit and the de-ageing process would stop. From there, Tuor's body would begin to alter into the required bodily structure that would make him an elf.
Maybe his height increased, strength, vision, hearing, his hair shone, his eyes glowed in the dark and appeared more feline, and his movements became more graceful and elegant. I mean this can be the hidden meaning behind the statement of him being counted among the Eldar and not just being given immortality. Maybe it's because he's the first mortal whose physical and/or soul form altered to appear like them after living among them for years. Just like Luthien being the first Eldar to alter as she lived as a mortal. You know, evolve as time goes on - evolution, adaptation, improvise, overcome.

We laugh at Sauron for not realising a golden-haired Aman elf with the audacity to challenge a fallen Maia with song can only be Finrod at this point, and conclude that Finrod's spell must have worked in part -- but I've never heard anyone ask how on earth did he never come up with the idea that Celebrimbor might have given the three rings to his three remaining family members!
Who made the spell this time?
