Watson: Holmes, did you eat my powdered donuts?
Holmes, mumbling with his mouth full: Certainly not.
Watson: Then what is that white powder on your jacket?
Holmes, panicking: Cocaine!

Ok, every time I watch 'The Great Mouse Detective' my mind clings to this.
Okay, there's nostalgia in this, my childhood and such. But that's not all, there's something 'magnetic' about the character Basil (Sherlock), which I can see why Dawson (Watson) is so impressed on Basil's presence. Basil is so energetic that he should come with a warning on his forehead: "danger 440 Volts".
Tumblr media
This little mousie called Basil is incredible and unbearable at the same time, he is so full of energy that watching him act and talk makes me lose weight just by looking at him. Lmao. The fact is, Basil is very agitated and hyperactive.
Tumblr media
And he's smart in a way that seems mad, especially when he gets an idea in his head and no one is going to stop him from following through. Basil can be harsh and full of himself at times, but he also redeems himself, as he can regret his bad actions seconds later when he realizes he hurt someone's feelings.
He wants interesting and vibrant cases like himself, like his mind is, that's what he likes. But he also hides too well that he knows how to care about people, when he should. Some empathy is in him, although he acts like a hyperactive machine of reasoning and action most of the time, who cannot remember client names or have no time for sentimentality. Lmao.
Tumblr media
He is focused and proactive when his mind is working and everything is going as he wants. And at the same time Basil is a complete Drama Queen when things don't go as he plans. Changing mood so abruptly, from extreme vigor and energy to depression and anguish, that he is insanely exaggerated in 'Holmes' mode. Is fun to me.
Tumblr media
Basil of Baker Street completely steals all the show, being a brilliant and charismatic protagonist
Tumblr media
There is almost no space for Dawson (Watson), whose personality can go unnoticed and those who casually watch it may think that he is just the "fool and comic relief", the movie and fans are so focused on Basil, that we almost don't see how Dawson has so much empathy inside him, and a giant gentle, sympathetic and kind heart.
Dawson is balanced and calm and brings a good counterpoint to Basil's personality. Dawson is so naive, he seems silly in comparison to Basil. But don't be so easily fooled, Dawson can also be direct and angry and put Basil in the right direction, be it with questions, or by grumbling and bothering about how stupid the detective is being, or act sadness about something harsh, said by Basil, and its making the detective regret and be more 'condescending' instantly.
Tumblr media
Dawson has the patience of a saint, an (half) limitless peace in relation to Basil, possibly Dawson is the only mouse who can be in the presence of the mouse detective without being overwhelmed by all of Basil's striking personality. Dawson colludes with Basil, without really being swallowed by him, knowing how to impose himself when he must.
Tumblr media
Dawson makes a perfect pair for Basil, and yet it's barely noticeable, because he's there humbly adjusting Basil to good, but ignores his own participation, giving all the credit to Basil, adoring the 'amazing' Basil. When in fact Dawson also had a lot to do with the case and its good outcome. But Dawson doesn't care and is fine with making Basil proud as the star of the Show and giving him all the credit, and Dawson really thinks Basil deserves it all.
Tumblr media
Basil and Dawson definitely manage to convey the Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson 'vibe' very well, so much so that for me this movie is a good adaptation of the Sherlock Holmes and John Watson universe.
Extra:
1) the 'case', although it is a Disney children's plot, is charming enough and brings good drama, from the beginning with the kidnapping scene to the end with the Big Ben scenes, the case has charismatic characters with whom we import (Olivia and Flaversham) and the film is full of references to the Canonical Sherlock Holmes books and others adaptations, to everyone's delight.
2) Ratigan (Moriarty), madness and dangerous he can be, beneath all the fancy pomp and satin. He kills a drunken accomplice for calling him 'Rat' (in other words, the truth). He tortures his most loyal henchman, Fidget, with his pet torture device (the cat). And he's so falsely polite when he's both blatantly cruel and mad. He is a villain with a lot of charisma, as well as scary
Tumblr media
3) The movie soundtrack is so good. I love it from the 'main title', to the 'end title-credits' (Goodbye So Soon).

it's kind of lame that not a single prominent sherlock holmes depiction on television or film (as far as i know) made holmes' hands "all mottled over with similar pieces of plaster, and discoloured with strong acids."

Months ago I went to get an asd test and they have general knowledge section for some reason and they asked who the creator of the adventures of Sherlock Holmes was and I literally didnt know
Flash forward to now and I am chronically and sickeningly hyper fixated on Sherlock Holmes and John Watson to the point where I have read every story, listened to almost all of the BBC audio drams, watched BBC Sherlock series, working my why through the 1990s version, listening to Sherlock and co (multiple times over) and made my own goddamn versions of those Mfs
I want them to ask me about it again so I can have an excuse to talk about Sir Arthur Conan Doyles “The adventures of Sherlock Holmes”
Ask me about my versions of Sherlock and John
(PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE)

Finally watching „The Great Mouse Detective“ and the comparison with Sherlock hound is insane
Sherlock Hound: „I am gentleman. Slightly weird, but loving, caring and always a perfect gentleman. Also Moriarty is a fun little villain, who never really hurts anyone.“
The great mouse detective: „Everyone is completely unhinged. Moriaty regularly feeds his gangsters to the neighborhood cat. It has evil clowns which will hunt you in your dreams and characters suffering from alcoholism. Oh, also, it’s a kids movie.“

Low budget Sherlock movie?
Just watched a Sherlock Holmes adaptation called "Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes" from 2010. For its low budget, it was not as bad as I thought it's going to be! It wasn't amazing, but it was for sure watchable and fun.
The story got a bit confusing towards the end, but in general, it wasn't bad. Unexpected plotwist. Interesting idea. Good acting. I would for sure recommend this movie if you are a Sherlock Holmes fan and don't know what else to watch.
Oh yes, and

Before I got into SH fandom I thought solving cases is the sole point of this franchise.
Now I realize it is but one of the points, the other being the relationship between Holmes and Watson. Every creator has to touch this aspect one way or another; there is no getting around it. A good story always contains some good plots unfolding around their relationship. The mystery itself is far from enough.
One of the main reasons that Sherlock Holmes is so popular, I think, is how deeply people are touched by their relationship, seeing it as romantic love or friendship. The connection between Holmes and Watson is exceptional.
Sherlock Holmes is the personalization of rationality and reasoning and it is why a lot of people love him and these books, but the aspect of deep connection and love is just as important, yet rarely talked about by most readers. I believe many feel it without realizing it. If we take out this aspect of the books, the lacking will be obvious and unbearable.

I have a couple ideas for tv shows and movies to sort, if you can and have the time and energy. Just pick and choose, or whatever else you feel like.
Raya and The Last Dragon
Ms Marvel
Fate: Winx Club
Ghostbusters, both versions.
High School The Musical The Series
High School Musical 1, 2, and 3
Legend of Korra
Out in the Outback
Anne with an e
Moana
Frozen I and II
And is the tv show of Sherlock Holmes different than in the books?
I'm not sure which you sorted earlier, so if you sorted the show already, ignore me.
Also, take your time with this ask, if you do it at all. It's a lot and more than is fair to ask you , I just had some ideas that may be interesting to analyse so I wanted to give them to you. However, do not tire yourself out, overwork, be overwhelmed or stress. This are just ideas, not even suggestions or requests. Just do whatever you both want to and can, whenever you can and want to and IF you want to and can.
Thanks for creating your blog, it's awesome!
I am totally planning to sort Raya, Moana, and Frozen when I get there in my Disney Ladies sorting series... but I'm not totally sure when that would be.
I do think Doyle!Sherlock Holmes is a Badger Snake (I'm willing to entertain the possibility that he's a particularly chaotic rapid-fire bird, but I do think Snake is more likely.) Either way, he models a 'I play the game for the game's own sake' Bird primary over the top, and built himself a data-collecting Bird secondary, and possibly an Actor Bird as well, although a lot of that is Snake shifting.
Elementary!Sherlock Holmes actually is a Double Bird, and falls in queer-platonic love with Watson because she Helps With His Work. Honestly in order to make the show's premise work as well as it does you have to shift Holmes in a more Bird Primary direction, because Badger primary Holmes would would not have made the shift away from his beloved London nearly as easily. And Elementary!Holmes is much more of a I-Know-A-Guy Bird secondary than the others, which is charming.
Sherlock!Sherlock Holmes is a morally bored burnt Snake primary who starts to latch onto people like Watson and Mrs Hudson (Irene, Mycroft, and even Lestrade to a degree) and the moral choices he makes revolve around them. The nicer explanation is that he's SO used to working alone that he's bad at letting these guys in on his plans, which leads to a lot of miscommunication. The less-nice explanation is that he's still young, and still unBurning, and still pretty selfish. Sherlock's "Mind Palace" Bird secondary honestly seems consciously constructed to me, in the same way that Doyle!Holmes' bird secondary is. (He's also got sort of a mind palace in the books, although he calls it a "brain attic," which is adorable.) So I suspect there might be a Snake secondary underneath there for Sherlock as WELL... but I also couldn't say for sure. It'd be a whole lot easier if we actually knew *how* he faked his death. The later seasons especially really don't like to engage with the specifics of HOW Sherlock Holmes does anything, being entirely focused on WHY.
Underneath the cut, I'm putting a list of all the properties/characters people have asked me to sort, in case someone out there is maybe looking for inspiration. (The bolded items are the ones multiple people have asked about.)
