dazai chuckled and shook his head at his little sister’s words. “you have such little faith in me. you really think i’d forget my precious bella’s birthday?”

“YOU LITERALLY FORGOT MY BIRTHDAY AND I’M YOUR SISTER.”

“SHH!”

it wasn’t an uncommon occurrence for dazai to lay awake the entire night. laying in bed, he stared up at the ceiling. his girlfriend, april, slept soundly beside him. yet again, she had another busy week of school. however, he was forcing her to take monday off. it was her birthday. of course he wasn’t going to let her go to school. he had made sure to call her out, reassuring the school secretary that he was a trusted adult who definitely had permission to call her out.

he then arranged a fun day of activities with her friend, who just so happened to be his little sister, to make sure she was out of the house. while she was busy, he was going to decorate the house and get it all ready for the surprise party he had planned for her.

rolling over, he slung his long arm over april and pulled her close. pressing a soft kiss to the top of her head, he smiled. “i love you so much. i really don’t know what i did to deserve you.”

it wasn’t long before monday had rolled around. “dazai, are you sure i can-“ shaking his head, dazai let out a small “tsk” sound. “my precious bella! you worry too much. of course it’s okay that you take the day off. i called you out.” a devious smirk was plastered on dazai’s face as he spoke. poking her head out from the bathroom, april narrowed her eyes. “did my parents-“

“shh! i assure you, cutie, it’s all taken care of.” april had a doubtful look on her face, but she wasn’t quite sure she had the energy to argue. “okay.. whatever you say..” she murmured. “lovely!” clapping his hands together, dazai stood up from the bed. “my little sister should be here anyyyy minute now. she’ll be spending some time with you while i finish up some agency work, okay?”

dazai made his way into the bathroom, wrapping his arms around the shorter girl’s waist. “i’m sorry i can’t spend the whole day with you,” he murmured into her hair, pressing a soft kiss to the top of her head. “you know i would if i could..” his voice was muffled due to the fact that it was buried within april’s soft, brown hair.

“it’s okay, samu. i know you’re really busy at the agency.” april had always been understanding of his busy schedule, which was just one of the many things he loved about her.

“my darling, you really are an angel.” little did april know that dazai wasn’t even going into the agency today. he was just using it as a cover up.

april giggled, shaking her head. she finished applying some lip gloss when the sound of the door opening caught dazai’s attention. “aprillll!” his little sister’s voice rang out throughout his apartment. “geez, my shitty sister could at least learn to knock..” he grouched. “samu!” april shook her head. “be nice.”

“what? it’s true.” dazai grumbled before letting go of april. he made his way out towards their kitchen, rolling his eyes when he saw his sister. she had already made herself at home in dazai’s little apartment, her feet kicked up on the couch. when she saw her brother, she rolled her eyes as well.

“well if it isn’t my shitty brother. where’s the love of my life?” ellie remarked. dazai laughed a bit before shaking his head. “the love of my life is getting ready. she’ll be out any minute.” he made sure to really emphasize that april was the love of his life, and not his stupid sister’s.

“you two, i swear.” april appeared behind dazai, a smile plastered on her face. “aprilll!” ellie called before hopping off the couch. shoving dazai out of the way, she immediately wrapped her arms around her friend. “oh look at my birthday girl. you’re so cute! not that you’re not always cute. you just look extra cute today!”

“okay, paws off my girlfriend.” dazai grumbled before ripping his sister away. “hey-“ ellie grumbled, a pouty look on her face. dazai then took ellie’s place, wrapping april in a hug. “have a lovely day today, sweetheart. don’t let ellie flirt with you too much.” he glared at his sister before pressing a soft kiss to her forehead.

“don’t worry, don’t worry. i won’t. she has a boyfriend, you know.” april laughed before kissing dazai’s cheek. “yeah, the stupid slug.” he pouted. ellie shook her head, rolling her eyes yet again at her brother’s words.

“okay april, let’s go!” ellie grabbed april’s hand and tugged her out the door, leaving dazai alone in his apartment.

dazai glanced at the wall, checking the time. 6:50. ellie would be back with april any minute now. the lights in the apartment were shut off, everyone crouched down and hiding.

he had spent the day decorating the apartment with streamers and balloons. he also hung a banner that ranpo and kenji had created just for the party. taking a deep breath, he continued to wait impatiently.

it wasn’t long before ellie and april’s footsteps could be heard walking down the hallway. “here, let me get the door-“ april’s voice sounded from outside, which made dazai smile. she was always so caring.

the second the click of the lock could be heard, dazai tensed. the door slowly swung open and april flicked the lights on. jumping up, he smiled at april before shouting, “surprise.”

everyone else did the same, smiles also plastered on their faces. ellie was standing behind april, giggling quietly. making his way over to his girlfriend, dazai wrapped his arms around april.

“happy birthday, my love. i love you so much.” he murmured, before pressing a soft kiss to her lips.
