Chrissy Cunningham, coming back to the music industry. First single in three years!

Chrissy Cunningham was once a Disney star, grew up in the spot light and was America’s sweetheart. Stepped away from the acting world to become a singer, with her fan base following along with her; became a pop star over night with her first single, Love Story. Eventually the actress turned singer, she took a massive break from both to quietly start up a fashion line.

Her success is known world wide and has recently stepped back in Hollywood with a short series on Hulu. Now it seems after that success, she’s taking her comeback further with her new single; Single Soon.

We’re all ready to hear the new music and see what else Cunningham has up her sleeve!

“The world seems to be ready for you, Sweets.” Eddie looks up from his phone to smile at a nervously pacing Chrissy, “Why the pacing?”

Chrissy groans and falls helplessly against the couch, covering her face and says something that Eddie can’t hear. She groans again, lifting a hand and repeats, “I’m afraid of what Jason’s gonna think”

“Carver? You’re asshole of an ex? That guy?”

She groans and sits up, “I’ve only ever dated one guy named Jason, Eddie! You know this”

He snorts, “yeah well, what about him?”

Chrissy glares at him and Eddie raises his hands in surrender, a finger wiggle gets her glare to drop. His smile drops as her face falls and he sets his phone down to sit next to her, “Chrissy, babe, what’s the actual problem? The song is amazing, your show is a success and Robin is coming over with Stevie”

“I’m afraid Jason will react, Eds. He is sweet but he can be a lot-“

“Yeah I know, I got the texts to remember that he has a controlling side”

She groans again, “we’ve been broken up for months and now I’m coming out with this song, he could try something” she’s biting her lip and twisting her shirt in her hands, “Just, I don’t want backlash”

Eddie softens and pulls her against his side, kissing her temple and rubbing her arm, “you won’t, not from the ones who know you. You have me, the rest of our friends and your fans? Babe, they’ll always be supportive of you! They’ll never take his side if he does come out with bullshit about you.”

“I guess” she mumbles against him, “Are you absolutely sure Robin will be here?”

Eddie’s happy that she’s hiding against his side, because she doesn’t see the shit-eating grin he has, “Stevie made absolutely sure that she’ll be there, he even promised to drag her away from her studio if he has too.”

“He doesn’t have to do that! I know she has a deadline for-“

He makes a ‘tsk’ sound while shaking his head, “Chrissy, her deadline isn’t as soon as you think. Stevie told me it’s actually in October, three months away. Your crush just has anxiety over her album, she can take a day to relax and maybe this will finally be the chance you get!”

She doesn’t say anything, Eddie has a good point but still, Chrissy is worried but she won’t say it again.

Eddie squeezes her once before hopping up and holding his hand out for her, she grabs it and is immediately up and twirled around before being hugged.

“Watch, this single will be a huge success. Carver can cry his heart out, you’ll be making records and get the girl you like so much. Trust me on this, Chrissy Cakes”

She squeezes her arms around him and nods, lost with words right now. Knowing her best friend, he’ll keep that promise and keep reminding her of it to even out her anxiety on it.

(Eddie’s right of course, the song is a huge success. At the launch party, she ends the night on stage with Robin Buckley, spinning her around and kissing her cheek. The media go wild with it, but it doesn’t bother Chrissy like she thought she would. Instead, she spends weeks laughing at Jason’s poor attempts to ruin her with Robin next to her)

I… don’t know where this came from other than I heard Selena Gomez’s new song ‘Single Soon’ and then I just started typing hahaha.

Information to know: everyone is famous in some way in this. Eddie’s got Corroded Coffin, Chrissy is basically Selena Gomez (child star/singer/fashion designer) Robin’s an indie singer and Steve’s a baseball player. The Party members are whatever you can think of it, I’d like to think some of them are YouTubers, singers & actors. Jason is also unfortunately famous too, he’s an actor. Steve and Eddie are together in this. They’ve been playing matchmaker with their best friends/platonic soulmates.

I could probably write more but I probably won’t lol so if anyone wants, you can take this and add too it or write your own version!

Ok, I’ll guess I’ll just be the Hiddles anon. Lol since my hatred for her really geared up bc of her involvement with him.

Anyway. So wait. She cheated on Joe??? That’s like the third time she’s cheated, if I’m not mistaken.

She cheated on Calvin — or at least there was an overlap — with Tom Hiddleston. Then she insinuated in her shit music, that she used Tom as a rebound or cover bc she actually wanted Joe (she met them both around the same time at the Met Gala in 2016). And she used Joe to “prove” how private she really was bc she blamed Tom for their “romance” being so out there.

The man would travel between London and various places in America without a peep, but, sure, Jan.

Their breakup always cracks me up bc he was supposed to fly from LA to the east coast somewhere to meet back up with her. On her plane. They had paps on the tarmac in LA to show him getting on the plane. Then they had paps waiting with her on the east coast to catch them reuniting. Except when the plane landed no one got out. So she went and climbed onboard. A few minutes passed and she came stomping out of the plane mad as a hornet and shooed the paps away. Word got out that he decided after his awkward and uncomfortable appearance at ComicCon some time before that (when he literally said the words “Taylor Swift and I are in love” 🙄) that he didn’t want to be a part of this PR nightmare anymore. So he didn’t get on the plane. And to add insult to injury, it was said he left a small gift bag on one of the seats. Inside it? A self-help book for getting over narcissism. 🤣🤣🤣 He popped up like a week later in London near where he lived. Proving he can get around without anyone noticing him.

During this PRship is when I really got an idea of how she operates and controls her image. She has a three month plan: the “outing,” so to speak (pix on the rocks kissing with Hiddles), being seen out and about (them kissing and touring in time and other places), pix with his family (they walked on the beach near his mother’s home with his mother, sister, and young niece), and then her supporting her friends (they attended a Selena Gomez concert fighter….he looked like a dad accompanying his daughter and her friends 🤦🏽‍♀️). She also has scripts for what her partner is supposed to say. I’ve heard he kept them and he and his friends would sit around (after they broke up) and read them out loud and laugh their asses off at the terrible writing. It’s probably why he sounded so wooden and uncomfortable when he spoke about her during the, what I call, Snakebite of Summer 2016. The rumors were she was trying to get him to take her to the Emmys that September but he didn’t want to.

Anyway…yeah I have a lot of intel from those days 😂 (sorry for the long ass ask!)

Your analysis of her PR relationships is on point! I see the same thing happening with Kelce. With the release of this album it feels like she’s intentionally fizzling out their romance. The scripts make sense because all of her partners sound the same when talking about her. How miserable she must be knowing all the love her partners have for her is fabricated.

Okay.

In the cartoon Jungle Book movie, the constrictor snake, Kaa, is singing this "Trust in Me" song to Mowgli to try to hypnotize him so that Kaa can eat him. The one in that movie is kind of eh.

Selena Gomez did a cover of it for a Disney compilation album.

When they did the remake with the live action Mowgli and realistic-ish CGI animals, Scarlett Johansen voices Kaa and does a version of the "Trust in Me" song.

So for the worst opinion to come out of this, I think I understand vore a little better now: I'd stand still and let a snake that sings like Selena or Scarlett eat me.

Oh, turns out Sioxsie and the Banshees also do a cover of this song. Didn't know that I just did a fresh Youtube search for it.

Before getting into the ramble, I'm just going to get ahead of the responses and clarify that when I name a song on these polls, I use the official name of the song as it's listed on the Billboard charts (obviously unless the official title includes an uncensored slur or the song was credited to an artist's deadname, which I haven't had to deal with as of now.) Luke Comb's cover of Tracy Chapman's Fast Car is simply listed as "Fast Car - Luke Combs" on Billboard. Not "Luke Comb's cover of Fast Car" or "Fast Car by Tracy Chapman (Luke Combs version)."

Now that I got that out of the way. Hi. Good to see you all again. Welcome to the end of 2023. We made it.

This is going to be an interesting entry on this blog for me. Because not only is this the first time I posted a poll from the current chart, this is also the first time since 2009 when I have not been closely monitoring the charts all year. So right now, I feel like I'm trying to look back to figure out what happened.

So. What happened?

Ever since the streaming era began, it's been clear that pop success matters less and less, but that feeling was especially strong this year. I'm not saying any of these songs are bad (that's not the point of this blog). But streaming splintered people's listening habits so much that everyone is able to listen to their own thing. Before I got big into chart watching, I was not an avid pop listener. But I was still knew which songs were popular because they were so much harder to avoid.

As I'm writing this, I've been listening to various Top 40/100 stations on the radio. Even ignoring the number of Christmas songs, I have yet to hear a song that came out in 2023. It makes sense to hear songs from 2022, since songs often take a while to build momentum (such as the tracks from SZA's SOS), but I've heard songs from 2014, 2013, 2006, 1995, etc.

And that's not even touching the year-end chart itself which includes 1. songs from 2022 (Kill Bill, Anti-Hero, Snooze, Calm Down), 2. a remix of a song from 2016 (Die for You), 3. a cover/remake of a song from 1996 (Creepin), 4. a cover of a song from 1988 (Fast Car), and 5. a song with an interpolation of a song from 1998 (I'm Good (Blue)). There are only 2 songs on the top 10 that are from 2023.

This year's tendency to look back is emphasized further by the genre which had the largest presence: country music. Not just because country music tends to be more traditional, but country music hasn't had a presence this big on the top 100 since the 90s. The biggest song of the year is a country-pop track by Morgan Wallen, whose 36 track album debuted at number one on the Billboard album chart. Not the country album chart. The Billboard 200. Beyond that, we have Luke Combs, whose cover of Fast Car reached the top 10, but two other singles from his album Growin' Up reached the Billboard Year End 100 without relying on the usual techniques country songs often need to cross over to the pop charts. Additionally, each year as of late tends to have it's pick of "think-piecey songs," whether it's Blurred Lines in 2013, WAP in 2020, or [insert any Taylor Swift song here]. The two most controversial songs of the year also happened to be country, with Oliver Anthony's Rich Men North of Richmond and Jason Aldean's Try That in a Small Town.

Why was country so big this year? One of my theories is that with streaming splintering people's listening habits so much, chart metrics will tend to favor physical media. I don't think it's a coincidence that Taylor Swift tends to dominate the charts while also being one of the top-selling artists on vinyl. If people are willing to pay actual money for your music instead of letting it stream in the background, the charts are going to calculate that differently. Not only are country fans more likely to buy physical music, but the two previously mentioned controversial country songs were also helped by right-leaning listeners boosting their sales, resulting in the two songs receiving a 78 and a 66 position on the year-end chart respectively.

As I'm writing this, I'm worrying that I'm not giving country music its proper credit. "Why was country music so big?" is a question that doesn't need to have a deeper answer. "A lot of people liked it so it had a larger presence" is also a sufficient answer. Country music doesn't have to cheat to reach the charts. The reason I'm delving into this is not the mere fact that country was popular, but the fact that country was so popular and seemed to shape the pop landscape as a whole, while not having the usual staples of a country-pop crossover. Unlike previous crossovers, none of the songs I mentioned needed a pop star or a rap verse to break onto the pop charts.

But speaking of a genre requiring a pop star to find a mainstream chart presence, 2023 marks the year of the first afrobeats song to reach a billion streams on Spotify, with Rema and Selena Gomez's Calm Down. But even without the pop feature, afrobeats also had an explosive year in 2023, and it's possible we'll only see the genre grow more popularity, similar to how reggaeton took over the pop landscape after Despacito crossed over to the mainstream American charts in 2017. If you, like me, aren't that familiar with the history of this genre and you would like to learn more, please know that afrobeat and afrobeats are two distinct genres. This article also does a good rundown of the differences and their respective histories. Also, while the song itself isn't afrobeats, Unavailable by Davido came out this year and it's incredible. The full album is amazing too. It's dreamy and atmospheric with energetic drums and I need to find a slot for it in my favorite releases of the year.

For a year where pop music was widely considered to have a down year, I sure had a lot to talk about. I haven't even touched on the "decline of rap music" (especially sad since it's the 50th anniversary of the genre), Taylor Swift's dominance (I mentioned her twice though; she'll live), or delved deeper into the presence of older songs on the charts. It certainly was an interesting year in music to talk about. But listening to it? Well, I'll let you decide that.

But if you look past the top 10 (or even the top 100), this was an incredible year for music. I haven't had the time to listen to every new release (thanks law school), but I still listened to enough that I came out of this year with some of my favorite musical projects of all time. I plan on sharing my favorite songs/albums of the year in a later post.

730 days since you’d last seen him.

730 days since what was supposed to be that special and happiest day of your life.

that night changed the entire course of your life, you thought that it would only have a lingering effect on for only a short amount of time.

seconds turned into minutes, minutes turned into hours, and hours turned into days.

this was difficult, no one ever told you that the healing process would be easy.

day by day, you found yourself reminiscing on every single moment you shared with him.

truth be told, you did miss him. every single thing about him. from the way he cared for you, to the endless amount of love and care he provided you but it was just too much to handle.

looking down at him, jack’s head laid against your stomach while his cheek was smushed against it as well, meanwhile the rest of his body was in between your legs.

jack has been having one of the most difficult weeks in his life and all he wanted was to be with you. he let out a sigh as you ran your nails up and down his arms and back.

just the silence and listening to each other’s breathing. for a small moment, the world stopped and it was just y/n & jack, nothing more. “i love you y/n.” he mumbled out almost silently.

it took you back, never in your life had you reached a point in a relationship where your significant other told you they loved you. you were usually the one to say it first. “i love you too jack.” you smiled down at him, he couldn’t see it but the sparkle of love your eyes was just enough.

now you occasionally found yourself just trying to pick up the remnants of your still, broken heart.

any and every mere thing reminded of you of jack.

trying to close a chapter in your life like this isn’t something that’s supposed to hurt this bad.

you needed your other half and he wasn’t even here with or even for you.

why did this have to be something you were forced to go through on your own? why wasn’t jack hurting as bad as you were?

after all, he was the cause of this. you were hurting like this because you loved him, he was the man of your dreams and he was gone.

now everywhere you went, you saw his face. no matter what you were doing he was everywhere. since the blow up of his recent album, come home the kids miss you. you’ve been seeing him more now than ever.

you sat across from jack as the both of you had managed to pull an all nighter.

at this point in time you were starting to get slap happy and getting very delirious.

jack was laughing at every little thing you were doing and you couldn’t understand why. “jack, have you ever thought about having kids?” you asked him as you sat next to him while your head laid on his shoulder.

there was a small silence that fell in between you two. “i’ve always thought about being a dad. the idea of 8 daughters running around has always been a thought of mine.” he said nonchalantly.

you quickly lifted your head and looked at him like he was crazy, did he just say 8 daughters?

you tilted your head and closed your eyes momentarily before opening them again and looking at him again.

“did you say eight?” you questioned, trying to reassure yourself of what was said and he just nodded.

“it’s normal!”

“no that’s manic jack.”

you sighed and covered your eyes to get rid of the incoming headache and the tears that had been threatening to fall out of your eyes.

to say that you missed the love your life was a definite understatement. you felt like you couldn’t life without him, but by the looks of it he seemed to be perfectly fine without you.

in your eyes all those years with him and meant nothing. when you fell in love, you fell in love hard. maybe this was single-handedly the best thing that you could’ve done for yourself.

may 16th, 2022.

the first time since jack had seen you since you called off the wedding was may 16th 2022.

you were sitting in a small coffee shop with your head buried into your laptop, typing away on a paper you had due for class in the next few days.

you’d had the half of mind to even notice jack who was waiting to order his drink. urban watched his best friend as he stared off into your direction.

“is that .. her?” urban quietly asked as jack couldn’t seem to move his feet. he was frozen in place, the only thing that jack managed to do was nod in response to urban’s question.

truth be told, urban had never seen jack so still and quiet in his entire life of them being friends.

seeing you for the first time again had elicited a spark inside of jack that words were never going to be enough to describe what he was feeling.

he wanted so badly to go up and hug you and tell you how sorry he felt and stupid he felt for treating you the way he did on your wedding day.

urban looked at you as well, he missed when the three of you were all together and up to absolutely no good, he couldn’t lie, when you left he was heartbroken too.

of course he should’ve ran after to you and said something, but there was something holding him back that prevented him from doing that exact thing.

“next in line!” the barista yelled loud enough to snap jack and urban out of their thoughts. they both proceeded to order their drinks and take a place across the room.

what were the odds of them showing up at the same coffee shop. “it’s now or never, jack you either talk to her or let her slip away again. if you wanna make this right, go say something.” urban told him as best as he could.

jack’s feet were grounded to the floor but his heart was craving you. before he could make his next move, he watched as you packed his everything up and made your way out the coffee shop.

for a second he thought, there goes his one chance. urban pushed his best friend out the seat, “just go! i got the drinks.” he mumbled and watched as jack got up and ran out of the shop.

he moved his body through the semi large crowd of people who just seemed to be out this day which made him feel like he was in some kind of cliché romance movie.

he eventually caught up to you at a crosswalk. he gently grabbed your arm and pulled you out of the way so he could talk to you. “what the f -“ your mind didn’t register anything you were saying until you were able to be fully aware of the person who was grabbing your own arm.

you froze as your eyes examined his entire being. your heart was beating a mile a minute and you couldn’t process anything that was happening. “n-no i c-can’t speak to you r-right now, not again.” your voice was quiet and sounded very fragile.

nothing was making sense and your eyes began to water horribly, you pulled your arm and walked away in the other direction. you weren’t being dramatic, not in any way. you were obligated to feel how you were feeling right now. 2 years, with no apology, no nothing.

why was he able to come back into your life like it was nothing.
