Porters Posse: Michaelmas Seasonal Cooking Challenge
Thinking about taking part? Reply to this entry - or send us a DM - and we’ll add you to the Michaelmas Posse list.
“The Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel on September 29 is associated with the beginning of autumn and the shortening of the days.  In the past it was celebrated as Michaelmas Day and was one of the most important days of the year; by Michaelmas, the harvest had to be completed, and it was also a time for beginning new leases, settling accounts and paying dues”
WHO: Anyone of any practice, or no practice at all, who enjoys seasonal celebrations, cooking, and feasting!  No restrictions, if you can pick up a spoon and stir you are invited!
Tumblr media
WHAT: Your challenge is simple: choose at least one recipe from the Porters Seasonal Celebration Cookbook’s chapter on Michaelmas to incorporate into your seasonal celebration and share with us photos and/or a write up.  We hope you will use as many seasonal and local ingredients as possible and look forward to hearing about your experience with those ingredients and locales.
Southern Hemisphere friends!  We want you to participate.  If the chapter on Michaelmas doesn’t suit your seasonal celebration needs, please participate by choosing a recipe(s) from anywhere in the Spring section.
While the recipe(s) from Porters Seasonal Celebration Cookbook should be the star of your entry we’d also love to hear about other traditional favorites that you used in your celebration.
Dietary restrictions?  We welcome you to adapt the recipes to meet your needs!  This is ultimately about you and your celebration!
(Haven’t been able to snag your copy yet?  Contact us and we’ll see what we can do to help you access those recipes.)
WHERE: In the convenience of your kitchen! Though we’d also love to hear about those farmer’s markets, ditches and orchards! Be sure to tag your post @portersposse!
WHEN: We are opening up a broad window for Michaelmas.  This challenge will take place between Michaelmas Eve (Wed. September 28th) and the weekend following Old Michaelmas Day (Monday, October 10th). So join us between September 28th and October 16th for the celebration and send us your entries between October 17th and 19th. Remember to tag them @portersposse so we can share them with the whole posse!
WHY: To celebrate the season in a way that includes everyone, and to quote Hagging Out “because it’s occasionally nice to be social in the comfort of your own home without actually having people over.”
HOW: By yourself or with family and friends! Just be sure to include at least one recipe from Porters Seasonal Celebrations Cookbook by Richard, Earl of Bradford and Carol Wilson.
Don’t get hung up on Michaelmas being a religious holiday—we are looking at it as a cultural date that has its roots in the past. This is a seasonal cusp!

i turn out about 12 kinds of cookies every advent, but I'm terrible about taking photos! it's been snowing heavily all day today, and i thought to make snickerdoodles. fortunately, for once i remembered to take photos for the @portersposse cookie swap! it's not the most creative or elegant recipe, but they are very wintery. I'm not a chewy cookie person, so these are crisp with a buttery, melt-in-your-mouth texture. This recipe is my mother's.
Tumblr media
Baby Snickerdoodles - makes ~5 dozen small cookies
1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
1 1/3 cups sugar, plus 3 Tbsp
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
3 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cream of tartar
1/4 tsp salt
2 tsp cinnamon
pinch nutmeg
Preheat oven to 375°. Cream butter and 1 1/3 cup sugar in a large bowl, then mix in eggs and vanilla. In a separate bowl, mix flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt. Mix the dry ingredients into the wet until a homogeneous dough has formed. In a small bowl, whisk together the 3 Tbsp sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg to taste (I use about 1/4 tsp). Roll dough into 1 inch balls with your hands and roll each one in the cinnamon sugar mixture until coated. Place on greased cookie sheets 2 inches apart. Bake 12 minutes or until lightly browned.
Tumblr media
(deceptively, these are quarter sheets instead of half sheets. these cookies are small!)

Recipe Advent Calendar - Day 6
Happy Holidays!
To celebrate the season, I am doing 12-days of seasonal recipes from the 14th to the 25th December. These are recipes published in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle newspaper during the period that Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes lived in Brooklyn in the early 20th century.
Poinsettia Salad
6 whole cloves 2 1/4 cups boiling water 1 package lemon gelatin 6 sweet pickles, finely diced 1/2 cup grated pineapple, drained 1/4 cup nut meats, broken 8 maraschino cherries, cut in eighths Boil cloves in water 3 minutes. Strain. Dissolve gelatin in 1 pint of this boiling liquid. Chill. When slightly thickened pour 1/2-inch layer of gelatine into individual molds. Chill until firm. Arrange cherry sections on this layer forming poinsettia petals. Anchor design with a few drops of liquid gelatin. Chill until firm. Sprinkle thickly with chopped pickled to make a green layer. Fold pineapple and nuts into remaining gelatin and fill molds with mixture. Chill until firm. Unmold on crisp lettuce. Garnish with mayonnaise. Serves 6.
The recipe appeared in the Friday 19 December 1930 edition of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle.

Easter roundup for @portersposse! so from Porter's Seasonal Celebrations Cookbook I chose to make the spinach apple tart. This is an apparent adaptation of some Elizabethan sweet spinach tarts, but I was forced to improvise when the book neglected to tell what I was supposed to do with the apples the recipe called for. I ended up lightly sauteeing them with my spinach puree, sugar, and spices. I was a little skeptical about this pastry, but it ended up being a lovely side dish to our lamb, sweet with only a bit of springy vegetal freshness.
My partner also made me a ruimentary kistka (device for applying wax to eggs) and I very shakily tried my hand at making wax-resist decorated eggs, kraslice in Czech. Since I made eggs, I traded an egg and some brandy for a light whipping with a homemade pomlázka.
My friends and I also took the opportunity to pick and sugar some violets--their destiny tbd.
Finally, my best friend and I made her grandmother's paska recipe, my best loaf of which I had blessed and ate on Easter.
Thank you Porter's Posse for encouraging my seasonal devotional practice yet again!

Scenes/Things in Supernatural that genuinely don't make sense to me if Dean was straight:
The confession booth scene.
Sam just rolling with the fact that Dean's siren is a guy while still thinking sirens infect people through sex.
Dean being flustered by several men: Gunner Lawless, Aaron, Doctor Sexy, etc.
All the parallels between Destiel and other couples. (A big one being "last night on Earth" bc how do you do that accidentally.)
Having all the gay jokes be on Dean instead of Sam.
Paralleling Sam meeting his childhood celebrity crush with Dean meeting Gunner Lawless.
The boner Dean got when Cas cleaned up.
Dean gulping after Cas does an impression from a Western movie.
Charlie, a lesbian, calling Castiel "dreamy."
The way Mary looks at Dean and Cas when they hug.
Dean wondering why everyone assumes he's gay, while Sam not caring.
The logic that Charlie can't flirt with guys because she's only attracted to women, but then having Dean flirt with the guy for her.
Dean seeming disappointed when learning that Aaron's flirting was fake.
The amount of time Dean and Cas spend staring at each other.
Dean canonically having an orgy with Crowley.
A woman saying that she knows when someone's pining for someone else to Dean, just for us to learn that Dean was never in love with Amara.
The set design and script choices that lead to a cross in the background while Dean said "I do." to Cas after he came back to life.
Edit: To the people who say I can't use the siren as an example because the siren is supposed to be his brother, and therefore his siren being a man doesn't work. If you reread that bullet point, then you will realize that I didn't put it down as just simply Dean's siren being a man. I recognize that the siren is supposed to be his brother. It's the fact that Sam still thinks the siren infects people through sex, not knowing that it's actually through saliva when he realizes who the siren is. So when he sees that Dean's siren is a guy, he had to assume they had sex, and he does not seem surprised by this at all.
