how would you distinguish scolopendra mutilans from the red headed variant of scolopendra heros? i thought for sure agatha was a giant desert pede until i saw the species
many scolopendrid centipedes (though only S. mutilans and S. heros are widely known) have a nearly identical color pattern; this convergent evolution is probably due to it being a very good warning pattern!
Scolopendra heros (giant desert centipede)
flickr
however, you can tell the two Scolopendra species apart at just a glance: the easternmost S. heros population formerly known as subsp. castaniceps has red on segment 2 and has a ‘ringfurrow,’ the deep suture on the forcipular segment. that last character is shared by many New World Scolopendra, while most well known Old World species lack it. the terminal legs of this form are black with red tips (photo below from iNat link)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
compare my photo above of a S. mutilans: red only to the forcipular segment, which lacks a ringfurrow. this animal is a red-legged form, but S. heros also has a red-legged form found in New Mexico. S. mutilans terminal legs are entirely reddish.
Tumblr media
if you’ve been looking at centipedes as long as I have you might also notice that S. heros has proportionally longer appendages and also reaches a much larger maximum size (can be difficult to gauge in photos).

Thanks for agreeing to help me :^)
I work at a cave. Recently in the breakroom they found a giant sonoran desert centipede. These are EXCEEDINGLY common in our area. Our boss regularly sprays human buildings with insecticide to keep kids from getting hurt (mostly at the risk of bark scorpions) and my coworkers decided to keep this enormous kitchen centipede and now he is our mascot. His name is real dalton. Problem is i dont know a goddamn thing about centipedes or how to care for one. Its kinda on me to make sure his enclosure is okay cuz i know my coworkers arent gonna give it as much thought as i will (despite honestly not really wanting a centipede. but i like milipedes. and i unfortunately am amazing friends w my coworkers. so like a bunch of kids asking to keep a feral racoon, i, father, said yes) and im wondering what it needs. Do these critters need enrichment???? What are the dos and donts?
i’m assuming you mean scolopendra heros - these are notoriously almost impossible to keep in captivity for long periods of time because they are extremely prone to mycosis (mold growing inside of them that kills them) I would probably release it. but if you do decide to keep it, you need to keep it in a VERY well ventilated container with a locking lid. a mixture of sand and dirt is fine for substrate. you can feed them bugs like roaches or mealworms once or twice a week. a shallow water dish is important but any moisture is a risk with these guys so it is up to you. and their venom is very bad so don’t get bit!

Ife headcannons
Hi guys! Thank you for all the likes and reblogs on my previous headcannon stories! Inspired by the one of my latest additions to the roster, a certain young lady by the name of Ife and her cute bounties...
1. She does love popcorn... But contrary to what most would think she loves super spicy flavours. Think the hottest possible without hurting her health! The first time she ate her most favourite flavour she had her fellow Union members' eyes go as wide as dinner plates... Except for Dhalia who laughed! You tried her favourite flavour .. l. And had to hold back a hiccup!
2. She's really good at DnD both as a DM and as a player. When Elliot is not available she does the sessions. Her preferred role is that of the Half-drow or Tiefling Rogue. The rogue is self-explanatory.. why Half-drow or Tiefling? Because she believes that like her and many other Espers they are misunderstood or just fear their powers. You've played but at times are amazed at her ability choices
3. Like Elliot she had been bullied a lot as a child. Thus she and Elliot have the intimate understanding that comes with going through such traumatic experiences. Whenever one or both have a flashback the other says a safe word that allows them to snap out of it. Dhalia and Gaius know their safe words and warning signs both because the pair trust them... And because they were the ones to suggest them upon seeing them go through a flashback the first time. They were also the ones to help them snap out of it by guiding them through a series of breathing techniques. You found out this about Ifr when she went through a panic attack and you had to calm her down. Fortunately, you remembered what Dhalia told you.
4. Both Ife and Elliot return their mentor's favours by helping others through similar experiences.
5. Ife does it by listening to others and by being an anonymous consultant on help forums and platforms.
6. She's really good at it and thus has considered becoming a therapist should she ever lose her Esper powers. Both Dhalia and Falken as well as you encourage her.
7. She is really good at martial arts and weapons such as blades. She regularly puts Dhalia and Falken to the test with her penchant for improvisation and tactical exploits.
8. Besides action spy films she also loves movies with animals, comedies, action hero ones like Iron Man or Thor Ragnarok and parodies. The first time she revealed this was when you and Falken were watching movies beside her.
9. Her favourite animal even before her Esper Transformation was venomous snakes, especially the king cobra. Her favourite photo... The two of you along with Dhalia, petting snakes.
10. She also loves cats, dogs bird of prey and song birds and hates insects. The first time you found that out was when she went Scooby-Doo on you because of a Brazilian Scolopendra.

I CAN FULFILL MY PURPOSE HAHAHAHAHAHA
...so um
DID YOU KNOW:
In Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, the centipedes that can be seen in the passageway of the Old House are not Scolopendra heros(Giant Redheaded Centipedes) which are native to Louisiana(the location the game takes place in) but Scolopendra subspinipes japonica(Japanese Mukade)
Tumblr media
They can also be seen in End of Zoe DLC

10. do you have any pet bugs? not currently. HOWEVER im very close to keeping mealworms !!! i love their little legs <3
25. coolest fantasy bug design? OH GOOD LIRD . UHHMMMM .... off the top of my head im not sure !! honestly, is it fair to say just any anthro bug design?? theyre so cool /silly
55. your choice! wax poetic about whatever bug related topic you want! (holds out mic) OURGH . heres a fun bug fact: did you know that the reason blue death feigning beetles are blue is because a layer of wax coats their exoskeleton? the older beetles sometimes have black spots as the wax wears away! it looks super cool.

Tell us some weird/interesting facts about your jeffs
WEIRD FACTS TIME GO!
Nathan only has one nipple
Pirate doesn't know that it's illegal or morally wrong to shoplift. He just grabs anything he wants and puts it in his pocket
AJ has a pet lobster named Terror that he stole from a restaurant
Darcie is secretly a big fan of ABBA but would rather die than admit it to anyone
Eddy usually speaks in a very soft and hushed whisper because his natural voice is very deep and bassy. he doesn't like scaring people with it :(
Tulpa knows it can be difficult for people to tell who's fronting, so, his Nina made bracelets corresponding to everyone in the system so it's easier to tell who's who. He also has rainbow braces!
-Mod CC
Dally is a culture vulture maniac, he loves mushrooms, insects and anything dead, definetly has a bogcore blog somewhere too. His pride and joy are his Grammostola pulchra (Black Brazillian tarantula) and his Scolopendra heros (Texas Redhead), called Midnight and Dawn respectively. Though he has a collection of crawlies he keeps in the house!
RRH enjoys collecting Sanrio merch, he is a massive hello kitty and my melody fan, and his favorite is the titular Hello Kitty. He has plushies of her around his room and jewlery themed around her.
Grease has DVDs and cassette tapes with old timey anime on it, some obscure and some not. His favorite anime movie is Tokyo Godfathers! He also possesses a single piece of jewlery- an Opal ring, it was given to him by his grandmother and he planned to give it to somebody someday, but he can't recall who was it, or why he never did.
Sal knows finger tutting! He's very very good at it, and likes showing the kids the tricks for it. He also tuts a lot when anxious and mutters under his breath.
JD only drinks LaCroix. He doesn't drink anything besides water and LaCroix. He has never drank anything besides water and LaCroix. He will refuse any drinks that aren't water or LaCroix. He likes the pineapple flavor. He also likes pineapple on pizza.
-Mod Noah 🦋
Star never tells similar stories about his past. We don't know if he even realize this at this point.
Frenchie keeps bottles with a red liquid inside a sheld, that anyone can touch or drink. I would advise not to.
Squishy always talk about a "papa" that no one ever saw. He never gives informations, and everyone is pretty sure that his dad is dead. The best thing to do is just accept that it's just an illusion from his brain, a sort of imaginary friends.
Raden did drag when he was 18-19.
Not a jeff, but everyone is pretty sure Kipri is not 100% humans.
-Mod Kim
daisy’s favorite disney princess is rapunzel
blondie despite being incredibly neurotic and paranoid of the most innocuous things, loves stephen king stories. his favorite novel is misery, his favorite short story is the cat from hell
spirit is 6’5

val single-handedly ended about 5 important bloodlines, and not in the way you’d think.
nine is the tallest in his family, and if i’m not mistaken the tallest in the house.
stat got his burns from trying to make spaghetti when he was 12-13 for him and his baby brother.
praline does taxidermy.

This is the first centipede plush I ever made. He’s Jack and he’s a Scolopendra heros. When I dove into the world of scary myriapods the heros are what first caught my attention. I was struck by their vibrant colors and fearsome reputation, and I decided to try to replicate them in plush.
Jack was about figuring out the basic structures of a centipede. He’s not as fancy as the ones who followed; he’s not made of as soft a fabric, I didn’t segment his legs or antennae and his eyes are quite far from accurate. Nevertheless Jack holds a special place in my heart. As a “learning creation” he came together well, and the sleekness of felt lends itself to a centipede. He is certainly not my most elaborate or realistic pede, but he laid the groundwork for those that followed.
Jack has been languishing in my shop for several months. If you want to give him a good home he’s very endearing and only half the price of my more elaborate pedes. I also take commissions if there is a species you’re just dying to own.

my mom recently read in a novel that some larger praying mantis species have been known to kill and eat hummingbirds. I know about bird-eating tarantulas, but I was curious if you knew of other insects who prey on birds, mammals, etc.? I know most will scavenge anything, but what abt critters who hunt? the idea of insects who hunt large prey is fascinating to me
large generalist predatory insects like mantises and katydids predominantly eat other insects, but the majority of the vertebrate prey they take is probably frogs and lizards, and typically ones smaller than themselves. hummingbirds might not be too representative of typical vertebrate prey because (I believe I heard a mantis researcher say) their metabolism is so tightly wound that the stress of being caught is enough to kill them, and all the mantis has to do is hang on, which they definitely can do. still, vertebrate predation is pretty impressive for orthopterans and mantodeans, since they’ve got to do it all without venom!
army ants of various types are also famous for their ability to catch vertebrates, but most army ants are actually specialists on other social insects (ants, wasps, termites), and the few generalist predator army ants still predominantly prey on invertebrates (and don’t skeletonize cows and horses like they do in cartoons).
diving beetles will hunt fish and aquatic amphibians—there’s a reason their larvae are called “water tigers!” belostomatid water bugs are probably the most impressive aquatic vertebrate-eaters though, and use powerful venom to subdue surprisingly large fish, tadpoles, and even other vertebrates:
outside of insects, there’s a lot of spiders that can feed on herptiles, either by overpowering them with strength like huntsmen and tarantulas, or by snaring them in webs like widows, the most successful snake eaters:
plus, there’s always the famous Nephila orbweavers whose sturdy webs can catch avian prey, but this is probably a fairly rare occurrence.
going over to centipedes, giant scolopendrids are quite successful predators of vertebrates, with any species large enough likely preying on herptiles, and occasionally on some far larger than they are!
Scolopendra venom is evolved to take down large prey, so it’s no surprise they’re some of the most prolific vertebrate-eaters in the arthropod world. some very large Scolopendra (gigantea, maybe galapagoensis, viridicornis, heros) will hunt bats, sometimes by hanging to catch them in flight. other predation on mammals and birds seems to occur opportunistically, especially where the prey is helpless: S. galapagoensis was recorded feeding on baby rodents in the Galapagos; other island species like Cormocephalus coynei will feed on seabird chicks (enough with the “fluffy” avian favoritism, Nature! ‘pedes gotta eat).
oh, speaking of nestling-devouring, there’s also some freaky observations of slugs munching on soft mushy songbird babies! someone on Twitter had their nest camera record some chicks getting eaten by a large Carabus ground beetle, but I can’t find it again.
but I think the most shocking example of vertebrate predation by an invertebrate is probably Epomis, another ground beetle. as larvae, they feed on frogs far larger than they are by letting themselves get attacked, latching onto the would-be predator, and munching on it until it perishes. adult beetles also prey on amphibians, but just run them down instead of luring prey.
youtube
(there’s also video of the adult beetles preying on frogs, but they seem to all be stolen by some weird content scraper YT channels, so I’ll not post them here.)
let me know if I missed any good examples of vertebrate predation by bugs!

Gimme some names my dudes
So I’m bored, and my last random text post blew up the last time I did this, sooooo....
What should I name the centipede that lives in my bathroom fan? He’s kind of an idiot and I need a name for him in case I get starved for companionship.
