Sanuso fanfic. hurt/comfort, romance, comedic, whatever. what are ur top 3-5 fave fanfics for Sanuso pairing?! (looking for recommendations)

BUDDY I WISH I HAD MORE 😭

For real, I actually find looking for new fanfics quite daunting - my brain tells me I can't afford to get invested in a story I might not like, even though I've wasted time on much worse things lol. So I rely on fic recommendations from other people. And I haven't really had many for SanUso!!

Ok, let's see what I do have:

One of the first SanUso fics I got recommended to me was Breaking Through Walls by Astral_Writer (NSFW but only in the last chapter IIRC so you could safely read up until that point if you're not interested in that). This is a fairly old fic, so it's interesting to see how their relationship is portrayed versus what's become more prominent now as the series has continued. I'll be honest, I wasn't sure about this fic when I first started reading it; I don't really vibe with interpretations where Sanji starts off legit hating Usopp, since I think it's pretty clear in canon that they're friends! (Though I also think Sanji himself might deny that if asked, so I get that YMMV.) But it won me over in the end; the characterisation was really good, and there's some imagery in it that I found really beautiful and striking. Sure stuck with me even though I read it a long time ago!

Ginger_snappin on AO3 has written a lot of great ZoSanSopp fics, so if you're interested in that angle, I highly recommend you read more of their stuff, but the fic You, Drowning Between My Arms is just SanUso and is a really great exploration of Sanji's hangups that would realistically get in the way of a relationship between them while still having a happy ending.

On the other end of the spectrum, hongmunmu writes such good SanUso with such a robust understanding of both characters' personalities and flaws that it makes me want to throw up because THERE IS NO HAPPY ENDING. THERE IS NEVER A HAPPY ENDING IN HONG'S WRITING. I AM PROMISED ONE BUT IT NEVER COMES!!! Everything they write is worth a peek, but if you're in the mood for horny angst devastating in its accuracy for both Sanji and Usopp's most toxic traits then you can read two birds with one stone (NSFW, and CW for discussion of self harm) then join me harassing them into writing something nice for once. And if you want an equally horny but now happy/romantic palate cleanser after that, go read One Month-iversary by leghair on AO3 (also NSFW).

I don't know why so many of these reccs are NSFW. Sorry. That's genuinely not what I go looking for when I read SanUso fic lmao. But that's what I've got! If any other readers here have SanUso fic reccs then feel free to add them in the replies!

I also think Sabo should get to know the straw hats better. I think he would want to know his brother found good people to surround himself with. Bonus points since they’re all so fun and interesting.

Also I must admit that at the moment I’m kind of just putting Sabo next to other characters like I’m comparing paint swatches to see what fits. Sabo and Usopp was cute to me when I thought of it, Sabosan is also interesting because of how they parallel and then there’s probably some all blue symbolism since blue is Sabos color but like. (waves my hand.) big fan of sabolaw. big fan. saboala is also cute.

Sexuality headcanon: The most bi character in the world. Undoubtedly loves women but has something so undeniably fruity going on with almost every man around him too.

Gender headcanon: See he can really be any gender ever to me. Cis man, trans femme/woman, trans masc/man, nonbinary, agender, these could all fit. I guess the only one I don't think really fits is maybe cis woman lmao

A ship I have with said character: I mean we all know how I feel about Zosan (really normal!). That's undoubtedly my OTP for Sanji but honestly I like Acesan, Sanuso, Lusan, even Sanami and Sanji x Pudding a little bit too.

A BROTP: Hmm I know I did say Sanuso above and I stand by that but they're just such best friends too. Guys of all time really I like how how he's a little bit nicer to Usopp compared to Luffy/Zoro lmao. Also Robin and Sanji's friendship has made me cry more than once I love the two of them together.

A NOTP: Hmm I'm not a big fan of romantic Robin x Sanji, that's more so because I only want Robin with Franky and no one else lmao, otherwise Sanji is just so good for mutishipping imo

A random headcanon: Truly believe in the headcanon that Ace was Sanji's bisexual awakening, he way they acted around each other in Alabasta is truly some tof the gayest shit I've ever seen and that's remarkable because One Piece is so overwhelmingly gay all the time afhgklhg

General opinion over said character: Truly been on a rollercoaster of different feelings towards him lmao. He started out as a favorite during a lot of early One Piece, became my least favorite during the middle, and then just shot up to my favorite and has stuck there, and with how good his character writing has been in the last three major arcs, I'd be surprised if that changed. The thing about him is that it always feels like there's something new to talk about with him. He's a rude brat, kind of a disgusting womanizer, has an attitude problem, is a self sacrificial dumbass, but yet he's also the kindest strawhat and shows that kindness through service to others, and his character growth is REALLY satisfying. Uhhh yeah i think he's alright or whatever and I feel super normal about him! (<- girl who lies)

yeah i definitely liked sanuso more than i liked sanji. before... before i came to like sanji. i don't think i was rly an Actual Fan though. seeing fan content of sanji (shipping content included) is part of what made me grow to like him. so ur right that a ship i like with characters i dont like would make me grow to like the characters!!

OKAY SO I gotta admit, One Piece (the anime/manga) has always been a thing that I've like, tangentially engaged with but never actually read/watched or followed the story in any substantial capacity, especially given it's so LONG XD That being said, it has had my intrigue for a loooooooong time so I'm consulting you as something of an Expert to ask, how much would you recommend it? (I've been dodging my inevitable fate as a Sanji girlie for so long :P)

I love that I have the title of One Piece Expert haha. XD

I would definitely say that One Piece was a very formative piece of media for me. My early pre-tumblr deviantArt days were very One Piece-heavy and I'm still friends with people I met thru One Piece (hey @muffintonic!!). Usopp remains one of my favourite characters from anything ever.

That being said, it's been years since I've actually been up to date with the anime or manga. (Tho I have been casually following the plot through some OP mutuals I still have... I keep telling myself that someday I'm gonna catch up on OP again lol...) And like, there are some issues I have with it - it's a manga from the 90s, it's inevitably going to fall into some unfortunate tropes, and I also generally preferred the pre-timeskip arcs to the post-timeskip ones.

BUT One Piece still has such a special place in my heart and I think it's worth it despite some flaws. It's funny and silly and weird but it will also break your heart sometimes, which is what the best stories do. It's about found family! It's about being anti-establishment! It's about following the people you love into the depths of hell and about reminding people who have been cast aside by society that they deserve to live with dignity and respect! It's about pirates and adventure and people having the weirdest fucking superpowers you could possibly come up with. It's great.

It's long as hell but that just means that you'll never run out of content. (There are movies and filler episodes and like. Everything you could ever want from this franchise tbh.) I haven't watched the new live action show yet so I can't say if that's a good place to start or not, but my advice would just be to find the first chapter or the first episode, whichever you prefer (the anime is pretty faithful to the manga so you're not missing much either way, the anime just has more filler stuff, some of which is really good!) and just give it a try, see if you like it!

And if you do, you should absolutely tell me what you think! :D I'm an Usopp girlie but Sanji is great too (and SanUso is a popular ship for a reason haha) and I'd love to hear your thoughts! And also maybe that'll inspire me to finally get caught up again. I've heard good things about the recent arcs!

The whole live action show coming out has put me back into a One Piece mood so this was a fun ask to get! :D (I'm sorry this answer was so long tho oops.)

Iris - Does your self insert for your f/os source material have a detailed and complex story and character arc, or are they just kind of vibing?

EVENTUALLY I will need to do a self ship post I can link too, because I have a different self insert for each of my top threes. The SIMPLE answer is they all have detailed backstories. The detailed answer I'll put under a cut at the bottom of this post.

Zinnia - how often do you think about your f/o? Do they live in your head rent free, or do you not think about them for months on end before suddenly hyperfixating on them nonstop for a week?

; w ; I feel like you've seen my blog, I never stop thinking about my boys. Sanji and Corazon occupy the most of my brain, but if I see Buggy I get emotional over him too.

OKAY SO HERE I GO about my self inserts. All three are me in personality, interests, and talents. All three have pink hair and green eyes, and glasses.

My s/i Ace x Sanji is an art historian from the South Blue.

They were traveling on a ship that was transporting priceless paintings from one island to another for an exhibition, when the ship was attacked by pirates after the artwork to sell for the Beri it would get them. They were one of only a couple of survivors of this attack, getting away on a scrap of wood that was floating that they managed to scramble on top of. They were rescued by the Straw Hats. This fits in canon timeline between Little Garden and Drum. They fall for Sanji very quickly, despite his bad habits, infatuated with his flirty nature and constant compliments. Despite Nami's warnings that he was like that with "all women," after they come out as nonbinary to Sanji during a heart to heart, he still treats them with the love and affection that made them fall for him. They bond while cooking together, taste testing each other's food and experimenting with new recipes at dinner for the crew. Make quick best friends with Usopp over mutual loves for drawing, plants, bugs, and being snipers. (They are trained in archery.) Jinbei reminds them of their late father, and they quickly get very attracted to the Fishman, looking up to him and asking him for guidance often. Other best friend is Robin, they bond over art history and how it related to archeology, she helps teach them to read poneglyphs so they can help her. [[Sometimes trio ship with Usopp bc I also love Usopp and Sanuso is my otp]]

My s/i Ace x Corazon is a Selkie from the North Blue. This OC is Canon Divergent

Info on Selkies (mostly based on Real World Mythos, but some tweaking done for OP Universe)

Legends Say that a man who finds a selkie for a wife are blessed with a beautiful obedient wife. At least that’s the human version of the tale. In the selkie world, it is a warning, a cautionary tale: never be caught by a human man, lest you have your coat stolen and never return to the sea. Selkies are generally only found in the farthest north points of the North Blue, where seals are abundant. True to legends, Selkies can shift between human and seal form with the use of their coats or seal skins. Selkies are thought to be rarer than mermaids, but due to the nature of their transformation, true numbers are unknown outside the community. When a selkie has her skin stolen she has a compulsion to marry the person who stole it, usually with discomfort to the selkie. If her coat is willingly given to a man, it must be willingly given back. Selkies sometimes bare children to the man they marry, but when they find the hiding place of their coat they will abandon these children to return to the sea. Some legends say that these children are sometimes visited or saved by large seals later in their lives. When selkies first transform, their coat is the clothes they are wearing, so they are naked until clothed in the human fashion.

My self insert specifically!

In seal form, they are a harp seal, dusty grey with dark spots. In human form they have long dusty pink hair and deep dark green eyes, large like a seals. Their coat takes the form of a fluffy winter coat, with the same colors as their seal skin. When they are wearing their coat, it works similar to a zoan fruit, they can transform by choice, and can do a hybrid form (similar to a mermaid) as well. Not trained in any particular fighting style, they're not much use in a battle, but they know basic first aid and are a good support to a team. They witnessed the murder of Corazon by Doffy (and prior, saw Law being placed in the treasure chest). //Canon Divergent// When Doffy leaves the island, leaving Corazon dying in the snow, They nurse him back to health slowly, giving him their coat to keep warm so that he doesn't freeze to death, and builds a small fire to keep him alive. When he comes to, they help him move inside the partially destroyed building. He gives her coat back willingly after explaining to him what it means to her, and that and his deep caring nature made her fall for him. When he's well enough to travel she travels with him so that he can reunite with Law, and they 'adopt' him.

My self ship for Ace x Buggy is a performance Clown part of the Buggy Pirates.

Ace has been a part of the crew for as long as any of the other original members and harbored feelings for their captain for a very long time before eventually breaking down and confessing after feeling like they were going to lose him to impel down. Buggy is initially very awkward and flustered and nervous about the confession but admits that he had feelings too. He's a bit of a tsundere so sometimes it takes a lot to get hid real feelings out in the open. Buggy has huge jealousy issues and will be very very possessive. Has a huge soft spot for Ace. They fight with a comically large hammer, and with a similar style to capoeira where they are dancing as they fight. They are obnoxious after they're officially together, but it's cute.

Zoro and Sanji understand each other, and sometimes have a very similar sense of humor. Even though they're worlds ahead of most, sometimes they can't help but to act their age.

easily one of my favorites. zoro and sanji are completely in character, being themselves and comfortable in each other’s spaces. for anyone who thinks zoro and sanji can’t get along in canon, this fic can easily prove them wrong.

Part Timer by 8ball ♡♡

Sanji really, really doesn't want to give Zoro a job at his restaurant. Zoro doesn't really even want to work there in the first place, but, well, there’s this thing with Sanji, and this thing with feelings and the whole thing is pretty damn stupid all together.

Zeff just wants grandkids. He’s too old for this bullshit anyways.

a wonderful, heart-wrenching, roller coaster ride of a post-series fic. this fic is not just a mere fic — it’s a zosan magnum opus with guest appearances by so many other characters, lots of crew hijinks and a must-read for everyone who craves for a happy ending for these good boys.

Say It Again by 8ball

Zoro tells Sanji how he feels. And then again. And again.

since we’re talking about 8ball i just want you to know i’d rec everything they’ve ever written, but special mention to say it again — a classic miscommunication trope fic done well where the miscommunication stems from fundamental misunderstanding of each other’s principles and views instead of just some plot-convenient coincidences. and soft zoro. god, he is soft.

Sanji decides to quit smoking. This is not quite so easy as he thinks it will be. Also, his crewmates (excluding Robin and Nami, of course!) are assholes.

fun, fun strawhat hijinks and oblivious sanji. the crew dynamics and especially sanji’s voice are pitch perfect. there’s a hint of luffy/nami that you can easily scroll past if it’s not your thing.

it cannot be overstated how wonderful this fic is, and how it could’ve fit into the canon just nicely, like a better-written one piece movie, except with zosan. not only are sanji and zoro in character, every strawhat gets a spotlight and has pitch-perfect voices. brook is especially lovely in this fic.

A group of marines charge, Zoro slices through them, and in that instant Sanji feels his own eyes grow wide. Because there, on the arm now outstretched towards him, steel glinting in hand, is the stupid bracelet he’d given Zoro. The bastard is actually wearing it.

there’s a reason this is the most kudo-ed zosan fic on ao3 right now — it’s so soft without being ooc, and there’s a quiet undercurrent of affection laid throughout the fic that will warm you up from the insides.

Also, „No Tracks In The Snow“ is maybe underrated but I get that Gen fics without any ships tend to get lower notes on AO3.

I really like all of my fics and if no one would comment, I’d be disappointed but I’d still think they’d be good stories and I write for me, mostly, so...

Omg your Sora/Banchina post is so good 😭 i loved read this, and like, Sanji's brothers (and sis) would be really protective of Sora and their brother, so when Sanuso start to date would be kinda a chaos

When Sanuso starts dating, it is the most chaotic thing in the world.

You see, the brothers are always being a bit mean to Sanji because he is a crybaby but it's just in the regular, normal, sane way siblings act. But if there is any possibility of Sanji being in danger/away from them, they get really protective.

They don't have any issues with Banchina and, in fact, they love her so much it's insane. They enjoy her company and help and they're always asking when she's coming over too because "Mommy looks happier when she is around, so we want her to come back!". Until one day they don't have to keep asking because she is constantly there. And they love her. They are... Intense and clingy with Sora, yes, and won't dare to leave her side either. And if they realize there is something romantic going on, they won't hesitate to be even more protective. But in general they accept Banchina right away because, again, she looks happier than when she is alone with her thoughts (<- Sora tries to hide it, but they did run away from Germa, after all. She is worried Judge might find them. Always thinking what would have happened to her little angels if she hadn't saved them. Always, always taking care of them).

But!!!!!! It's a different story with Usopp.

You know, when they meet, they are kids. And Sanji is a sweetie pie. And naive. And maybe Usopp gets a bit carried away with his lies and maybe Sanji believes all of them. But they're cute little lies and they always make Sanji happy, so it's fine. Basically, more storytelling than anything. And it's not that the siblings don't like him! In fact, Usopp's aiming/shooting skills are already pretty good and they're impressed by that. Always asking him if he can do tricks with them.

Buuuut. Usopp is younger and anxious and God the brothers love to tease him about Sanji and they try to make him stutter when he is lying/storytelling to make fun of him in front of Sanji. It's just silly and it's all kids games. Nothing cruel. But!!!!! But there is also the realization that "they like each other. Usopp likes Sanji". And at first, it's just a silly thing so they make fun of them, but as they grow up together, their crushes on each other also do and it's like,,, It's something they learn to live with. They get used to it.

They've been in love forever and they are 17/15 and haven't confessed yet and it is just their normal behavior. Everyone can see they're in love. And when the "they are actually in love and it's not only a crush thing" sinks in, the brothers do get a bit protective. Because Sanji knows how to defend himself thanks to them but, again, Zeff's influence is crucial for Sanji's character so I think here he'd be just a little tiny bit softer than usual? Not really. Same personality. But the sibs just feel like they need to take care of him. Not gonna explain this word for word but-- There is obviously the "we're so done with you pining over longnose, PLEASE just confess so we don't have to hear you anymore" conversation with Sanji and "if you hurt him we will kill you. We could do it. Eyes closed. No hesitation. Don't you even dare make him cry once-" with Usopp. They regret it immediately, tho, because when Sanji and Usopp start dating they become ever more annoying and clingy and it's,, Impossible.

They all share a room. Not really. Reiju has her own room and the brothers sleep on a different one. Bunkbeds and everything. And even if they didn't sleep there together, the house is small and the walls are thin and they can't have any privacy in there. And they're always eating together because of course they all love Sanji's cooking, but he is always so cheesy with Usopp they prefer to kick them out of there and eat leftovers. This starts when they're 17/15, right? So it's two... Whole years... Dealing with them... Until they go with Luffy.....

Oh!!!!!! And Reiju. She is the sweetest and gets along with Usopp SO well. She and Sora are always talking with him about Sanji and they're so so so supportive. Reiju is the one to always defend these two from the other 3 idiots.

But it's alright because the brothers always find ways of teasing their new brother-in-law ("I'm not married to Sanji, though-" / "With the way he looks at you, you might want to start preparing for the wedding already"). So at least they have fun. But sometimes they look at Usopp in a weird, defensive way and he gets,,,, Scared.

So! I do have a couple of ships for him!

1. Ginsan obviously. I’ll answer the second part of your ask here too, tho i’ve think i said it before on my main blog (whirlybirdwhat) but any excuse to rant lol.

Its just!! very fun and gin with how little we know of him has a lot of opportunity to grow as a character and I can have complete control over that. He was inspired so much by Sanji and his life was shaped by the straw hats, and I just want to see where that goes! Additionally, its just. the mutual stand point they have (asshole people trying to control them, almost starving to death, etc etc.) and I think it jus has a lot of potential!! Also rare pair so i can do what i want with it lmao

My other Sanji ships are

2. Sanlu (Sanji x Luffy) - because its just. very soft. and food. also wci angst and the way Sanji lights up when luffy asks him about the All Blue like fck yeah

3. Sanuso (Sanji x Usopp) - also because its very soft and I think Usopp would be good at bringing Sanji down to earth and Sanji would be good at just expressing his mushy romantic feelings to Usopp. in away. idk

4. Sance (Sanji x Ace) - just. Alabasta. Very gay. And also fire guy and fire guy? Perfect and also luffy in the name of all good siblings just looking at both of them like they betrayed him is very funny to me because two seconds later he would support them as all good siblings do. Its also very soft and food.

5. In a world where Nami wasn’t the biggest lesbian in one piece and sanji wasn’t a horny shithead, Sanji x Nami because i read a few ships where they were background characters and just. Nami keeps sanji down to earth and Sanji isn’t a fucking horny mess and is just like ! my wife’s awesome! which good for him. Definitely not want I want to see in One Piece or as a main pairing but?? its cute on the rare occasion. Better as friends tho

Mmm not really? I mean, I appreciate all of them the same, some I just find to be more relatable than others, but I struggle with choosing favourites (trust me, this will be a trend when dealing with me). I love just seeing cute art and cute stories about them. I'm very likely to make happy noises over any ship that hits my radar.

If I'd have to say, it'd probably be something on the levels of Every single character and a god damn therapist.

That's a ship I can get behind.

No seriousky, these babies need someone to help them overcome their trauma and mental health problems, look at them, perfectly good babies got anxiety.

I honestly don’t know if there were any characters I’d never expected to love so much, I guess maybe Wendy, because I started to really appreciate her character after that episode where she beats the hell out of Cartman, then I fell for her once again during The Cissy episode.

I think none, I loved all the straw hats since day 1 in the fandom, pretty much everyone in Luffy’s side as well, but if I’d have to pick one, I’d pick Bon Clay just because they were a kind of villain when they first appeared, but since Bon-chan helped the crew at the end of Alabasta arc in the name of friendship, they became a good person in my view, Bon-chan has a good heart.

And I have low self-esteem and self-doubt/insecurities of my potentials and good qualities, his arc during Water 7 is the most relatable to me, running away from a group of friends, returning with a persona not to be recognized and wanting to be accepted back, I do understand his feeling at the time, maybe what he did was selfish, but I relate and emphasize with him.

I was wondering what your thoughts, headcanons, or possible aftermath fic scenarios for this "what if?": What if Usopp had been there with Chopper and the other doctors when they witnessed Sanji get his exoskeleton against Queen? What would Usopp have felt? What would he done? Once Kaido was beat, would Usopp have gone and brought it up with Sanji? Sanji sure the fuck didn't bring it up with anyone and probably swore Chopper to secrecy...

I've been saving this post to write a proper answer to these questions because I think it's such a good and interesting topic that it deserves my attention 100%. Or at least that's what I've been saying, but if I'm being honest it's just that the whole topic of Sanji in Wano affects me personally and it's not exactly my favorite subject (It really is, though. I love it. I just have to be in the right mindset). And since I am drunk and sad I am going to try and tell you what I think. I sincerely apologize if there are any typos here, btw.

Your question kind of reminds me of what I always say about Usopp being in WCI. I personally think he should've been at least either in WCI or here with Sanji when his body got altered. I don't think it's fair we got to see Sanji with Usopp back in Water 7 when he was the most vulnerable but we didn't see Usopp with him when all of this happened. I don't know. Perhaps I'm a bit biased because I'm a Sanuso shipper and Usopp fan, but I really would've liked it.

I think Usopp would've been confused, just like all the other characters witnessing this, but he would've known instantly that something more was going on. Like. It's not only that Sanji's body is getting altered, but that it's affecting him emotionally. Usopp would've known it was upsetting him. And tbh since he saw Sanji wearing the raid suit for the first time, it isn't hard to like, draw your own conclusions. He probably would've known it had something to do with it. Perhaps he would've tried to help with the fight but Sanji would've told him to stop (because he's stubborn and a fucking self-sacrificing idiot and also he was in the middle of a breakdown) and Usopp would've started panicking, basically. Reading Sanji's movements to see what's wrong and panics even more when he sees him not getting hurt the way he should. And when he sees his whole body being, uh, out of place, and Sanji not getting hurt by it, he just starts panicking even more. Like, here we have to keep in mind he doesn't know anything about what happened back at WCI. He knows. But he doesn't know. You know? Anyway- The thing is that I don't think Sanji would've given him the chance to express his feelings because he's in the middle of the fight and because he definitely does not want to talk about it.

Personally, I think Usopp would have brought it up and that's sort of why Oda didn't put him there (and because Usopp was doing his Usonami shenanigans with Ulti and Paypay) (I never talk about Ulti and Paypay I fucking love them wtf). It's a journey Sanji has to go on his own. It's his "nothing happened" moment. The only ones who know something's wrong are Chopper and Zoro, and they for sure won't talk about it because Sanji definitely told Chopper to not say anything and Zoro is... Zoro. Anyway. I think Usopp would've tried to talk about it with Sanji and Sanji would've told him that it's not that big of a deal. That it's nothing. He'll get over it on his own. And tbh I am making it Sanuso because I am the Sanuso princess and I can do it:

Usopp asks Sanji what happened back there, and Sanji refuses to answer and tries to ignore the question. Tries to laugh it away or whatever. Usopp knows something is wrong, of course. Of course he knows, because Sanji has been like an open book ever since WCI happened. Long story short, they have some back and forth with Usopp demanding to know more because he cares about him and Sanji trying to ignore his questions. But, yeah, Sanji ends up yelling and telling him the truth and he instantly feels like shit for yelling at Usopp and scaring him and that only makes him hate himself more. And if that ends up with Sanji crying and having a whole breakdown and Usopp hugging him it's up to you, but to me I 100% confirm that this would happen and Usopp would give him a whole speech about him still being himself despite his body because otherwise he wouldn't be crying.

#long story short oda didn't make usopp see this bc then he would've had to make sanuso canon #or he would've had to give usopp important scenes in wano and god forbid oda gives him attention #anyway at least elbaf will be for him #as you can see i did not get too much into the subject of sanji bc i think that if i talk about it i will cry #one piece #black leg sanji #usopp #sanuso
