Morley at first appears to be playing the same kind of larger than life cartoonish buffoon he so often did but to the #credit of the film his character is revealed to have more nuance and more depth than expected in the final act. the supporting cast is wall #to wall brit character acting legends and that was the main appeal for me; nearly every speaking role is taken by someone of note‚ even if #(as in the case of permafave Alfie Burke) it's literally just 30 seconds of screentime. disposable fluff at the end of the day‚ but a #delightful kind of fluff‚ and a moreish kind‚ like cotton candy.

Sam Kydd (1915-1982)

One of the most familiar faces in British cinema, Sam Kydd made nearly 300 films and countless TV appearances between his debut in The Captive Heart in 1946 and his final television roles in 1982.

One of my personal favourite Kydd roles was Constable John Harris in Terence Fisher's Island of Terror (1966).

A heavy smoker for most of his life, Kydd died of emphysema on 26 March 1982, aged 67.

Kydd would have been the biggest name‚ having #recently costarred in popular drama Crane and currently heading up its spinoff Orlando. many of the smaller parts are filled by recycled #actors who'd had small roles in earlier eps (inc. Goodwin‚ Lamont‚ Lee‚ Arrighi...) and even the score is reused from other eps #but there's good stuff in the script; McGill gets to be unusually fun in the first act‚ joking around and putting on voices‚ and then #there's a nice element of offscreen character building (McGill and Nolan have apparently worked together multiple times‚ enough that Nolan #implicitly trusts him; they've even had dinner together and McGill appears not to be meeting his wife for the first time here). it's some #nice little background sketching in before the story gets going (and gets tough; this is another pretty brutal entry‚ less so for McGill #than for the other characters‚ and includes a pretty rare onscreen murder of a woman (rareish for mid 60s brit tv anyway))

He then inadvertently starts a strike. Brilliant satire on the problems of industrial relations from the days when the unions were much stronger, with plenty of laughs at everyone’s expense.
