Like Amelia in Lovers' Vows, Fanny is unmoved by the temptations of wealth, status and sexual conquest. When she is given the rare opportunity to express her feelings, she does not hold back, as is shown in her gentle, but spirited, defence of her right to her 'negative’:
I should have thought …. that every woman must have felt the possibility of a man's not being approved, not being loved by some one of her sex, at least, let him be ever so generally agreeable. Let him have all the perfections in the world, I think it ought not to be set down as certain, that a man must be acceptable to every woman he may happen to like himself…. In my situation, it would have been the extreme of vanity to be forming expectation on Mr Crawford… How then was I to be - to be in love with him the moment he said he was with me? How was I to have an attachment at his service, as soon as it was asked for?"' (MP, p. 353)
This speech is remarkable for its encapsulation of the paradoxes of courship conduct for women, particularly those of a low status. Fanny's ‘settled dislike' of Crawford is not enough for Sir Thomas, or indeed Edmund, because Crawford is perceived as a socially acceptable ‘catch'; yet, paradoxically, it is precisely Fanny's lowly social status which precludes her from forming any expectations of Henry in the first place. Furthermore, when she is condescended to be noticed by a man of means, a man whom she has no right to consider in the first place, she is immediately expected to switch on her feelings, 'as soon as it was asked for’. […] Fanny, of course, is not in Amelia’s position of choosing her own husband, but she nevertheless exercises her right to refusal, as do most of Jane Austen's heroines. […] Austen has Henry Tilney advocating ‘women's power of refusal' in Northanger Abbey, but in Pride and Prejudice she conveys the limitations of a woman's 'no' in Mr Collins's and Darcy's refusal to accept Elizabeth's refusal. […] In Mansfield Park, Henry's reluctance to accept Fanny's refusal is proof of his gross selfishness. Even when she is softened by his conduct at Portsmouth, she still hopes to be released from his attentions: 'might not it be fairly supposed, that he would not much longer persevere in a suit so distressing to her?' (MP, p. 414).

Man in a Suitcase: Why They Killed Nolan (1.17, ITC, 1968)

Kydd would have been the biggest name‚ having#recently costarred in popular drama Crane and currently heading up its spinoff Orlando. many of the smaller parts are filled by recycled#actors who'd had small roles in earlier eps (inc. Goodwin‚ Lamont‚ Lee‚ Arrighi...) and even the score is reused from other eps#but there's good stuff in the script; McGill gets to be unusually fun in the first act‚ joking around and putting on voices‚ and then#there's a nice element of offscreen character building (McGill and Nolan have apparently worked together multiple times‚ enough that Nolan#implicitly trusts him; they've even had dinner together and McGill appears not to be meeting his wife for the first time here). it's some#nice little background sketching in before the story gets going (and gets tough; this is another pretty brutal entry‚ less so for McGill#than for the other characters‚ and includes a pretty rare onscreen murder of a woman (rareish for mid 60s brit tv anyway))

So... I've started a tradition of bringing a group of friends to performances at the Metropolitan Opera and creating illustrated orientation guides to help everyone get prepared for each show. The next one is Richard Strauss & Hugo von Hofmannstal's Der Rosenkavalier, and I'm proud of how the document turned out... even if it does run to 23 pages 😅.

On the final trio:
Musically, the thing that really blew my mind about this number is the way it builds to an unbearably beautiful climax (3:33), then a heartbreaking chord change (3:43), then it feels like gravity turns upside down (3:50), then somehow goes sideways (3:59), then FINALLY resolves (4:10). I’ll never be able to adequately explain how this makes me feel. It blows past all expectations, again and again, and just when you start to catch your breath, the bottom drops out from under you again, revealing a whole new level that you never dreamed was possible.
The most common way to stage this scene is to spread the three singers across the stage, each processing their turbulent emotions alone to the audience. But I also like the staging from Zürich in 2004, which keeps them tightly together and even has the characters touch at key points. It also helps that all three performers look like they’re about to fucking explode.

During the confrontation, Lady Catherine accuses Elizabeth of being ‘lost to every feeling of propriety and delicacy’, a charge that she equates with her refusal to accept the distinctions of social class. But, as Elizabeth demonstrates, true propriety and delicacy are indicative of manners rather than rank. Furthermore, although Elizabeth refuses to be bullied by authority and exhibits courage and frankness in her private encounter with Lady Catherine, she also has a heightened awareness of the importance of observing social forms in public. […]
It is striking that no such decorum is necessary for the union between Elizabeth and Darcy. Indeed, their relationship is defined by their mutual candour, and their unwillingness to dissemble, which is perhaps what Darcy implies in his remark that ‘neither of us performs to strangers’. […] Elizabeth shows her grasp of the particular dynamic of their relationship when she assesses the qualities with which Darcy fell in love:
‘My beauty you had early withstood, and as for my manners - my behaviour to you was at least always bordering on the uncivil…. Now be sincere; did you admire me for my impertinence?’ ‘For the liveliness of your mind, I did' ‘You may as well call it impertinence at once. It was very little less. The fact is, that you were sick of civility, of deference, of officious attention. You were disgusted with the women who were always speaking and looking, and thinking for your approbation alone. I roused, and interested you, because I was so unlike them" (PP, p. 380)
It is precisely Elizabeth’s irreverence and frankness that make possible a private language between them that transcends a society dependent upon conformity to social mores.

Something that ask reminded me of was how after Kick died and Joe Sr went through her belongings that were left and he saw a birth control kit and was apparently not happy (this is from Paula Byrne's book) and I remember reading it and scoffing because he was so giddy in encouraging his sons to be sexually active but when he sees a sign his widowed daughter being sexually active he's disgusted wtf?!?!

A nine-year-old girl has died after being shot in Liverpool.
A man was reported to have fired a gun in a house on Kingsheath Avenue in Dovecot at 22:00 BST on Monday.
The girl was shot in the chest and died in hospital, while a man also suffered gunshot wounds to his body and a woman was shot in the hand.
Merseyside Police has put a cordon in place as officers hunt the gunman. Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims said the shooting was "truly shocking".
"No parent should ever have to suffer the loss of a child in these dreadful circumstances," she said.
"This crime is abhorrent and our communities must come forward and tell us who is responsible.
"This cowardly individual does not deserve to be walking the streets and I would urge those who know anything to speak to us and tell us what they know."
A force spokesman said the girl's next of kin have been informed and were "being supported by specially trained family liaison officers".
He said the injured man and woman were taken to hospital after the shootings and house-to-house and forensic inquiries were being carried out.
West Derby's Labour MP Ian Byrne, whose constituency includes the street, said residents were "all struggling to process it as a community".
He said he would be asking his constituents to "help the police and give them as much information as possible".
Liverpool Mayor Joanne Anderson said it was an "appalling act of evil" and urged anyone with information to "come forward", adding: "Guns have no place in our communities."
A woman who lives nearby, who asked to remain anonymous, said the shooting made her worry for her own children.
"It's devastating. It can't carry on like this," she said.
At the scene
As you walk around the extensive police cordon, shock is etched on people's faces.
Many living locally only found out this morning what had happened.
In the houses nearest, people know the girl who died, but they don't want to speak to the media. Those that do talk of their fear for themselves.
One couple said they heard what they thought were four gunshots last night and were now scared, not just for their young child, but for themselves too.
Another woman, who has lived in the area for decades, said it was maybe time to leave.
The killing of a nine-year-old girl has had a deep effect on those who live here.
The girl's death came after a spate of killings involving guns and knives on Merseyside.
On the same night, a woman was found with a fatal stab wound in her chest in a pub car park in Kirkby, while on Sunday, 28-year-old council worker Ashley Dale died after being shot in the Old Swan area of Liverpool.
Police are also still searching for two people who fled on electric bikes after Sam Rimmer, who was in his early 20s,was shot in Toxteth on 16 August.
Monday was also the 15th anniversary of the murder of 11-year-old Rhys Jones, who was mistakenly shot by a gang member in Croxteth on his way home from football practice in 2007.
'Heartbreaking tragedy'
Labour's Paula Barker, the MP for Liverpool Wavertree, said the "mindless violence simply has to stop".
She said the city would "come together in adversity" as it always did and Liverpudlians would be "absolutely horrified" by what had happened.
Assistant mayor Harry Doyle said he was the same age as Rhys Jones and remembered his being equally "as worried and concerned and devastated" as the people he had spoken to earlier.
"It is unthinkable and it's unbelievable that this has happened again 15 years on," he said.
"We thought we'd rid ourselves of this violence and this week we've seen it return."
Home Secretary Priti Patel has offered her "heartfelt condolences" to the girl's family, adding it was "important that anyone with information comes forward"
"The force has my full support and will receive any additional resources they need," she added.
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said in a tweet that his thoughts were "with the little girl's family" as it was "devastating news, for them and their community", while Liberal Democrats leader Ed Davey tweeted that it was "a heartbreaking tragedy for Liverpool and the whole country".

In 2021-22, Merseyside Police recorded 211 firearm offences, placing it in the top 10 worst affected areas in England and Wales
That represented a 51% increase on the previous year when there were 140 firearm offences recorded, but it remained lower than pre-pandemic levels, when there were 227 offences recorded
London (1,066 offences) and the West Midlands (585) recorded the highest number of firearm offences in the last year
Nationally, police recorded 5,752 firearm offences in the year ending March 2022, which was a decrease on the 6,618 offences recorded pre-pandemic
Across England and Wales, a total of 35 deaths were reported involving a firearm in the year ending March 2021, with 27 being reported in the year before
