Such highs and such lows, this was Ava. Nothing between. Like a queen one moment, a scared child the next. At times so romantic, so sweet, like a girl of seventeen years old. She was very romantic, a strange, romantic creature. The things she did were not those of an ordinary person. - Claude Terrail on Ava Gardner, Love Is Nothing

I felt like a real storybook girl. Something was going to happen and I was ready for it.

The wild lure of the sea must live in the mermaid. Her skin should have something of the phosphorescenct sheen of the ocean, and her hair something of tangled seaweed. The water's thousand colors must glitter in her eyes; the maelstrom must be in her kiss, and the gentleness of foam in her embrace.
Jens Peter Jacobsen, Niels Lyhne (1880)

It is so beautiful to be loved as Laurie loves me. I see and feel it in all he says and does, and it makes me so happy and so humble that I don’t seem to be the same girl I was. Oh, I never knew how much like heaven this world could be, when two people love and live for one another! - amy march & theodore laurence, little women

Gregory Peck met Audrey at an introductory party at the Excelsior Hotel. He took her small hand in his large one, felt shyness in her modest grasp and said, in playful rehearsal for their roles,'Your Royal Highness.' She replied, ‘I hope I don’t let you down.’ [During filming], gossip, unfounded but plausible, suggested Audrey as the cause of [Greg’s] marital break-up. She was hurt and puzzled. Then it was explained to her by an interviewer from Photoplay, a woman wise to the ways in which rumours gathered credibility, that Audrey herself had unwittingly encouraged the story by the very enthusiasm she had shown for working with Peck:
'[He] is down to earth, full of real simplicity, utterly kind to everybody.’
Praise like that was not interpreted as a professional endorsement but as something warmer and more intimate. Audrey was startled by this revelation. Then she admitted thoughtfully, ‘That may very well be.’ - Alexander Walker

It was obvious to me right away that Carole was madly in love with him. Just from the way she spoke about him. I never saw them together. I can only say that I felt she was enormously in love, and that she was going to see that this situation was handled properly on every level. As I look back on it now, I just think that she had such enormous energy, you see - that was one of her main qualities. When she would zero in on something, that was it, and she wanted this relationship. - Margaret Tallichet
