Weekly Reading Update (04/08/24)

Reviews and thoughts under the cut!

Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut (8/10)

I don’t know if I’d say this book was enjoyable; it’s non-linear and doesn’t really build up to much. However, it is an incredibly strong piece of commentary on the horrors of war as well as many other social issues. While I didn’t enjoy it as a story, I thought it was an amazing dissertation and did something very interesting with the sci-fi elements.

The Lost Heir by Tui T. Sutherland (9/10)

This is a really strong book, one that kind of politics-heavy for a children's series and is narrated by an interesting but distinctly flawed character. This one is from Tsunami's perspective who, if I remember correctly, was my favorite of the dragonets, often tied with Glory. The worldbuilding in this series continues to be pretty amazing, and the pacing is good as well. I do wish it was clarified how old these dragons would be as humans because it sounds really weird when you're trying to marry off your six-year-old to your advisor, but the dragonets tend to act more like teens than young children.

Trickster’s Queen by Tamora Pierce (9/10)

This was a strong conclusion to this duology; the way things are wrapped up on the political side do it quite well considering the real-world reflections. I liked this book for a reason I like a lot of Pierce books, which is that she doesn't shy away from the day-to-day struggles of larger conflicts. It's not all huge battles and coups, it's slowly chipping away at a regime's stability through small signs of resistance, dissemination of information, and driving wedges in the ruling class. The characters are really strong, establishing a huge cast very well, especially on the romance side with Aly and Nawat. Dove is an amazing character, and as a reader, despite her age, I could see her being an accomplished queen.

House of Crimson Hearts by Ruby Roe (18+) (CR, 13%)

I was not anticipating a sex scene within the first two chapters of this book, but I'm not complaining. I really like that this sapphic romantasy is being unabashedly sexual, something queer books can struggle to get out there. Plotwise I'm not quite sure what the long-term goal is, but I find Octavia and her backstory very interesting.

To Gaze Upon Wicked Gods by Molly X. Chang (CR, 11%)

So far I'm kind of neutral on this book. The worldbuilding draws me in, as does some of the complex relationships being built up. On the other hand, it feels like there's a bit of info-dumping going on. Instead of weaving information into the narration, there are lumps of explanation that are inserted practically every other paragraph, which is sort of slowing things down for me right now.

Good choice for an upstanding roegadyn husband for Frog to bring home to her parents to impress them: Rammbroes

Hilarious choice for bringing home an upstanding roegadyn husband to alarm and frighten her parents: Rasho the captain of the confederacy in the Ruby Sea.

#the trouble with having a WoL with a well adjusted home life and living parents #is sometimes you think 'hmm they would probably still have something to say about her marrying an elezen #even if he were the leader of Ishgard'#'I must now evaluate every roegadyn man of a certain standing for potential parent pleasing husband quality'#idk maybe this is just an elezen/hyur/roegadyn problem and the world building for other races feels less analagous #to recent historical societies where this would be important #although woe betide if you have a Sharlayan OC #they definitely have roegadyn culture first and foremost #in terms of like... day to day social structures #I'd say the hyur/elezen/roe non-specific 1800s to modern societal expectations #but roegadyn founded Sharlayan's society and you can see how it mirrors Limsa first especially with boats and arcanists #point is your sharlayan moon catgirl might still have to bring back a respectable husband to impress the parents #in which case you could do worse than Rammbroes :P #ffxiv #I am just rambling #I haven't not skipped the ruby sea cutscenes on alts literally ever so this is the first time watching them since Frog was first here #they're REALLY long and back to back in my defence #also Gosetsu would be perfect parent pleasing husband material but like however old Rammbroes is Gosetsu has at least 2 decades on him #going from 'hmm' to 'Frog MUST see her own grandpas in him and that's that'

The two most important people in Charles' life were his wife and his daughter. Charles loved them more than life itself. Charles' favorite thing to do on the weekends was play with his daughter Anastasia Juliet Leclerc. Charles would never admit to it but he lived for the moments when Anastasia dragged him into her playroom to play dress up and dollies.

“What do you want to do today?” Charles asked Anastasia while cleaning up her face from breakfast.

“I wanna play dress up!” Anastasia squealed.

“Okay princess, let’s get you all decked out”, Charles responds as he lifts her into his arms. He carries her to her playroom and sets her down on a stool in front of her large wardrobe.

“Ooh look, Daddy, I want this one!” She exclaims, pulling an Aurora-themed dress from her play play chest filled with dresses and other costumes

“Wow, I can see why!” Charles responds as he checks out the dress. It’s gorgeous, made of sparkly gold fabric, and adorned with beautiful gems. Charles can imagine the fairy tale it will create. “How about we go with this dress today and let’s see what else we can come up with to go with it”, he suggests as he pulls out a basket of accessories for her to choose from.

Anastasia squeals with excitement as she digs through the basket of sparkling necklaces, bracelets, and tiaras. She decides on a small crown made of rubies and a tiara that matches her dress. Charles can’t help but smile as he watches his daughter’s imagination run wild.

“Your turn papa!” Anastasia exclaimed excitedly as she grabbed a fake pearl necklace, two clip-on earrings, and a tiara and put them on her papa.

“Daddy looks so elegant!”, Charles laughs as he puts on the delicate necklace, earrings, and matching tiara that Anastasia gives him. He looks very silly dressed as a princess but he can tell she loves it.

“Do you like me like this, my fair princess?” Charles asks with a playful look on his face.

“Yes, daddy! You look just like my favorite princess from my story book”, Anastasia responds as she kisses him on the cheek. Her face is full of joy and love as she looks at her adoring father.

“Can I do your makeup next?” Anastasia asks in a very childlike, adorable tone.

Charles has no idea why his daughter wants to do his makeup, but he can’t deny the chance to spend more time with her, not to mention she’d probably give him some kind of funny look.

“Hmm, okay but you have to be gentle, okay princess?” Charles says as he sits down on a stool in front of her.

“Okay Daddy, I’ll be very careful”, Anastasia says.

Anastasia begins by applying a light pink blush on his cheeks and a touch of sparkle shadow on his eyes.

Charles looks down now and then to see what his daughter is doing and he is pleasantly surprised by how careful and nice she is being with him.

Charles is not afraid of being seen in such a ridiculous way, especially since Anastasia is the one doing the makeup. His main focus in that moment is how much his daughter loves dressing up with him and she’s not even asking for anything in exchange, all she wants is to play with her daddy.

“Okay, now I just need to add a little lipstick and you’ll be ready for the ball”, Anastasia says excitedly. She applies a light pink lipstick to her father’s lips.

Charles is enjoying this moment with his young princess. He feels relaxed and content in a way he hasn’t in a while. She’s not asking him for anything, not even an expensive toy or a new dress, all she wants is to play dress up with her father.

“All done! You look amazing Daddy”, Anastasia exclaims excitedly. Charles isn’t sure what’s more laughable, his princess dress and makeup or the huge smile on his daughter’s face. She seems genuinely proud of the look she’s put together for her daddy as if he was going to go to a royal ball at the palace.

Charles can’t help but giggle as he watches his daughter’s face light up. She’s so excited to see him in his princess dress and makeup, and he’s happy to oblige. He feels silly but he enjoys making his daughter happy. It seems like every time he gives in, she wants to play dress up for longer. What started as a couple of minutes has turned into an hour already.

“Come on, Daddy, we have to dance!” Anastasia says as she grabs her father’s hand and pulls him up from his stool.

Anastasia doesn’t want to waste any time getting started with their grand ball of a dance and she wants her prince charming by her side. Charles can’t help but laugh as his daughter’s imagination runs wild.

She is having so much fun with this make-believe game that she doesn’t even realize how much time is passing. Charles just wants her to be happy.

“Okay my fair princess, let us dance!” Charles responds, following his daughter’s cue and pretending to be her prince charming. He takes her hand and begins to sway her from side to side as if they were dancing. He even goes so far as to spin her around a few times as they make their rounds around the room.

Anastasia is grinning from ear to ear as she feels like a real princess, dancing with her handsome prince. Charles is smiling as well, but his smile is more about how much his daughter is enjoying this game.

When you got home you could hear the father-daughter pair in the playroom giggling and laughing. Walking to Anastasia’s playroom you watched the two dance around before making yourself known.

“Well don’t you two look adorable” you said to Charles and your daughter

Charles smiles at his wife as she walks through the door and sees him playing dress up with his daughter. It’s been a long day at work but watching the two of them dancing in the playroom makes him forget all about it.

“Yes we do, don’t we mommy? And all thanks to Anastasia! She made me look so beautiful”, Charles replies with a sarcastic yet endearing tone.

“Thank you, honey, this was all Anastasia’s idea”, Charles says as he turns towards you. You love that your husband still allows your daughter to play with him and even dress him up in silly outfits and makeup. He knows he looks silly and would never go out like that, but for Anastasia, he would pretend to be anyone she wants him to be.

“Do I look pretty?” Anastasia asks, twirling in front of you. The pink dress and makeup bring out her blue/green eyes and give her an innocent and soft aura. She looks almost like a miniature version of a Disney princess.

“You look gorgeous!” You exclaim as you look at your daughter dressed as a princess. You feel like your heart is going to burst with joy when you see how happy she looks dressed up and playing dress up with her father.

“Can I do your makeup too, mommy?”, Anastasia asks as she watches you look at her. She’s already made up her mind, she wants to put makeup on you too.

“Alright princess, you can do my makeup but you have to be careful and not make me look too silly, okay?” You respond as you give her a small smile. You know that Anastasia loves to play dress up and it’s sweet how she wants to include you as well.

“Don’t worry Mommy, I’m going to make you look more beautiful than you already are”, Anastasia replies with a big grin on her face. You can’t help but chuckle at her confidence, she looks so sure that she’s going to make you look like the prettiest woman in the whole world.

Fishlake Meadows, Romsey: A special place

This nature reserve is equally as uplifting to visit in the spring and summer months when exotic Hobbies dash through the sky and colossal Stag Beetles roam the canal side path as it is in winter when Gadwall, Pintail, Pochard and Teal immerse me in a world of waterfowl.

A magnificent raptor is a star attraction to this reserve in spring and summer, Ospreys (particularly one) standing like grand statues and offering breathtaking moments of natural wonder when they fish. Many raptors adorn the skies here, Marsh Harrier in its prime habitat, ravishing Red Kite, Buzzard and Kestrel. Sparrowhawk also a key species in this oasis of wild in an urban area and a non-bird of prey evolutionary lookalike is a mesmerising sight and sound here on spring days, the Cuckoo. Its similarly in appearance to the predatory Sparrowhawk able to fool the adults of its host species into leaving their nest so it can insert its imposter egg. Other key waterbirds to see here include bight Egyptian Geese and Greylags, Great Crested Grebe, Common Gull, Snipe and dazzling Water Rail always a species to cherish seeing. Another of the main stars of this reserve is an elegant giant which is gripping the south of the country now, Great White Egret. Purple Heron and Glossy Ibis are two rarities I was lucky to see here. I was ecstatic to see a Kingfisher catch a fish along the canal when reaching the reserve as was I when I was so fortunate to see a splendid Cetti’s Warbler after being surrounded by their bright and cherry calls evocative of a reedbed paradise. Sedge and Garden Warbler other amazing warblers I’ve seen here. Other passerines it’s a treat to see here include Wren, Bullfinch, Blackcap, Treecreeper, captivating Nuthatch, vibrant Stonechat and Reed Bunting. A Roe Deer a delight to see.

It's an insect haven too with Hairy Dragonfly one of the first spring dragonflies to see and the gem of Banded Demoiselle another key species with Migrant Hawker enjoyed here too. Speckled Wood and Green-veined White fly the flag for beautiful butterflies and Brimstone moth and Grey Birch are among sensational moths I’ve seen here. Drinker moth caterpillar and vigorous ruby Cardinal beetle are other key insects I’ve seen here. Nursery web spider was another of nature’s fascinating little stars which has thrilled me here. Onto plants and there is an array of colour here throughout the seasons created by stunning species such as wood avens, comfrey, meadowsweet, cuckooflower, forget-me-not, hemp agrimony, bird vetch, yellow iris, water lily, hogweed, traveller’s joy and marsh marigold. A sight of intricate and alluring turkey tail fungi clinging to a stump beside the canal at one time lit up by the glorious winter sun was wonderful.

This brilliant nature reserve with its distinctive dead trees and thriving reedbed, wetland, canal and woodland habitat is a star of a reserve that has risen over the past few years and an exciting vision of how to use land for nature and let a landscape be transformed. A lesson of hope, a place I always come back from inspired.

Weekly Reading Update (04/01/24)

Reviews and thoughts under the cut

The Red Palace by June Hur (7/10)

This was a really interesting historical mystery that delved into an area of history I'd never heard of before, the palace nurses of Joseon. The historical aspect of this book is incredibly interesting and made even more so that the plot is based on a true event. The mystery isn't mind-blowing, but it is executed quite well and balances actually solving it with the social pressures of the time. Unfortunately, this book falls short in terms of the characters. I liked the main character, Hyeon, but she doesn't really have a solid arc. Her relationship with her mother drew my attention, but her relationship with her father ended in a very unsatisfying way for me. Also, while the love interest is green flag after green flag, he also has no discernable flaws.

The Lost Heir by Tui T. Sutherland (CR, 70%)

Of the first five books of Wings of Fire, this one was my favorite when I was younger. I really enjoyed the more heavy political aspects, and that holds true now. For a middle grade novel, this delves a lot into the various implications of dragon politics and leadership. Also, just like the first one, it is surprisingly violent. Tsunami is also one of my favorites of the dragonets (it's tied between her and Glory most of the time), so I really enjoy reading from her perspective.

Trickster's Queen by Tamora Pierce (CR, 5%)

This novel begins with a bit of a time skip, but I can already tell it's going to be much more social politics-heavy than the first one, and I can't wait. I like the dynamic between Aly and Kyprioth; only the daughter of the Lioness could be comfortable speaking to a god that way.

House of Crimson Hearts by Ruby Roe (CR, 5%)

As would be expected from a vampire novel, there's already blood, but perhaps not in the way a vampire would like as she's been stabbed. I'm really excited to get into this one since there's not a lot of sapphic romantasy out there.

Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut (CR, 5%)

This should be a quick read, but I am a bit apprehensive. This was pitched to me as science fiction, and while I do love a strong anti-war sentiment, this seems remarkably normal so far. I hope it's not like Dirk Gentley's Holistic Detective Agency where I have to wait the whole book until the science fiction part comes into play.

Combat is only work when people make it weird (Zenos) or sad and necessary. She really loves test of strength type fights like Susano or the Heaven on High set up or really any jolly fun escapade set up to be a fight where the victor is going to be a friend on the other side or at least perfectly understandable... If I name Hell's Lid and that whole trial series I'm really just saying she thrived in the Ruby Sea like nowhere else but I'm sure that's not the ONLY place we encounter fights like that LMAO

Zenos pissed her off because he was one shade off perfect for fighting except the stakes were sad and necessary and he was trying to turn it into the exact sort of game she thrives on >.> As much as I was like "Yay finally!" in Endwalker, in character for Frog she was grim and fed up and ready to put an end to the nonsense... One of those characters I'm much more neutral on than my WoL because I didn't see The Atrocities first hand.

Toto sighed as he unlocked the front door, he wanted to climb into bed with you and stay there until he had to get up. Closing the door Toto walked through the foyer into the living room stopping in his tracks. In Toto’s living room was a sea of F1 drivers.

“What the fuck” Toto says under his breath.

Walking further into the living he sees both of the Ferrari boys who called dibs on the couches. Fernando was sleeping in his recliner. Oscar was sleeping in your comfortable reading chair with his feet propped up on the coffee table. Toto saw Lando in the corner of the living curled up in a ball sleeping on the dog that you bought for Axle that he never used. Pierre and Yuki were sharing an air mattress, Lance had his own sleeping bag. Max and Daniel were both passed out one on the landing of the stairs and the other was sprawled out in the kitchen counter. Toto assumed that Lewis,and George were in the spare guest rooms.

Alex and Logan were sitting up sleeping against the couches that occupied the Ferrari drivers.And in the corner of the room under a pile of blankets was Mick

This is the last time he lets Ruby be in the house on her own. Sitting on a bar stool “How did she lure them all here? I swear they don’t all even like each other but they’re all crammed in here like they can stand being in the same room as each other” Toto says under his breath, leaning forward on his elbows and closing his eyes.

48 hours earlier

“Ruby, are you sure that you would be fine here on your own?” Toto asked as he finished packing his stuff.

“Toto I’ll be fine it’s only a few hours and besides I have Axle and if I get lonely I’ll call Mick and have him keep me company he doesn’t live far away,” you told him smiling.

“You're up to something,” Toto said skeptically, crossing his arms.

“I have no idea what you're on about,” you said, raising your hands in defense.

“Uh hmmm,” Toto said

“I solemnly swear that I’m up to something,” you say. “Scouts honor” you add.

“Ok Ruby,” Toto said, walking over to you.

Toto puts his hands on your hips pulling you into him. “I don’t know what you're planning but be careful,” he said softly.

“I promised” you said sweetly

“You called them didn’t you?” Toto says

“Yeah I did” you admitted

Toto hung his head low, shaking it “just keep the kids out of my closet. Last time they were here lando Mick Logan Liam Oscar and Arthur all decided to dress as me for Halloween”

“I make no promises and if it makes you feel any better Oscar didn’t want to do it”

“Ruby”

“Fine I’ll keep the kids out of the bedroom”

“Good,” Toto says, giving you a kiss.

“I’ll see you when you get back?”

“Of course Schatz,” Toto says, grabbing his things and leaving.

30 minutes later

With Toto gone Ruby smiles to herself, she could never be mad at his caring side, and he loved those boys all like they were family.

Her smile turned into an even bigger grin when she remembered how much fun she was about to have with them and how much she missed her boys.

Ruby goes into her home office and types up a quick group chat message

“The Wolff has left the den”

Within a few more minutes, all the drivers are in the house and are all gathered around their beloved team principal.

As Ruby wraps her arms around each driver and gives them a hug, she sees that they all have the same mischievous grin on their faces.

“Who’s ready to party?” You said with a smile.
