Completing the Path to the Yellow Dragon: A Report on RTX Austin 2023

What's got the voice cast of Team RWBY acting up in a tizzy? Find out the answer and more under the cut!

Preface:

So anyone who knows me, knows that I'm heavily into RWBY by Rooster Teeth. And as such I have an emotional attachment to the show and its' characters, especially Yang Xiao Long. So much so that Volume 3 definitely affected my emotional and mental health when Yang lost her arm to the bull bastard. If you can recall how I tried to cope with that.

But with that particular chapter long behind us all, there came a point where I made it a personal goal to meet the main cast of RWBY, whether individually or one at a time. An opportunity arose when Tampa Bay Comic-Con announced Barbara Dunkelman was going to be in town that year for it. All things considered, she's the one I wanted to meet the most. UNFORTUNATELY that year happened to be 2020. And you know when happened then. So it didn't happen for all the obvious reasons.

The following year, I made another attempt to meet all four of them when Florida Supercon announced them as guests in Miami. Which worked out on certain fronts since both my dad and my uncle live there. But once I had already purchased my ticket, they all ended up pulling out. And there was no refunds. So I basically wasted money and begrudgingly attended the con, knowing all I could do was basically just bumblescrewing around. Especially considering they didn't announce any GOOD replacements for them. At this rate, all I could settle for were video chats with Barb, (And at one point Barb AND Arryn) so that they would at least know my name and my face.

Another year passed to 2022, and to my utter disappointment, neither TBCC nor Florida Supercon ever bothered to make good and attempt to bring any of them back. So with my trust gone from local cons, it was then that I decided what needed to be done. After taking care of other business with Wrestlecon in Dallas, I would instead go directly to them at RTX the next year knowing they're consummate guests who can't pull out from there since they all practically LIVE and work there with Rooster Teeth. Because it became more important to me than ever to meet them all, especially Barbara, to make myself feel spiritually whole.

And so began my Path to the Yellow Dragon.

Day 1: Discounts at Diner Bar and The Grey Market? HAHA, BET.

Waking up to the sound of "Dangerous Dreams" by LeBrock, I made the early morning flight to Austin with more baggage than I had ever packed before and a new backpack to carry lots of necessities with me.

Arriving at the Fairmont hotel, I unpacked and settled in as quickly as possible. I was surprised to find I had my own bathrobe! So I decided to get my Damien Sandow on:

After taking time to relax, I made my way to the Austin Convention Center for what was dubbed "First Night." Which was essentially their "Welcome to RTX" panel, which included the RTX 2023 theme song! (Said song ended up being "Higher" by Creed except with more Rooster Teeth centered lyrics, lol.)

After that, it was the various talent of Rooster Teeth, including Geoff Ramsey and Gus Sorola giving us the lowdown on the weekend events, not to mention making announcements for stuff like new episodes of Camp Camp and A Simple Walk 2. We were also treated to Face Jam recommending several local eateries for those of us not familiar with the area, as well as constantly reminding us of getting discounts from Diner Bar and The Grey Market with our RTX badges. While I didn't partake in those place, I DID scope out Via 313 pizza as a means of securing a dinner for the weekend, so good on them for telling us about THAT place.

Not much else after that, so I packed it in, grabbed some room service for dinner, played a bit of Tears of the Kingdom before calling it a night.

Day 2: A Perfect 10 out of 9

With the OFFICIAL first day upon me, I made it a personal mission to make sure my attire was repping Team RWBY throughout the weekend. So combined with my camos, it came out something like this:

There was definitely more of certain colors than the others, but let's be honest, with how many people were out there wearing similar colors after Volume 9, would it matter? XD

Regardless, since I had a Platinum badge, I was allowed one-hour early access to their main hall! And they had PLENTY to do inside of it! Including...

And then there was the 20 Years of Rooster Teeth Museum!

T'was full of different props and signed stuff. Some that were off limits, and others you could interact with. Like sitting on the Always Open Couch, or even pose with a replica of the Crescent Rose! Since that was the case:

I took the opportunity to practice Kozuki Oden Two-Sword style! Although Crescent Rose is definitely a LOT heavier than it looks.

Then there was the All Good No Worries Park!

Just a simple place to sit back, relax, play a few yard games, and even scribble messages on the completely free spaced walls that was in the center. Having THAT kinda freedom, I decided to Gol D. Roger it up:

Suffice to say, there was PLENTY of fun to be had. But aside from awaiting for the Shop to open up, (which I couldn't immediately get because access wasn't allowed until Noon for those who didn't have the Ultra Badge) there was a VERY unique activity to do at the RT Animation Fan Zone...

The chance to speak with Ruby Rose herself! In VTuber form, Ruby appeared before us all for a "fireside chat" following her latest adventures. These happened in short sessions throughout the day, so I managed to attend two of them during the weekend. Here's some tidbits that happened while I was there.

-Despite how she acted towards them in Volume 9, Ruby IS very happy that Blake and Yang got together and very excitedly approves of their new relationship. She noted that it was very unlike Yang to dance around her feelings, so she was glad it all paid off in the end for them both. Good thing I asked THAT question!

-When asked what kind of Pokémon trainer she would be, she stated she'd have a mix of Grass and Flying-type Pokemon. And throw in a Pikachu.

-SOMEONE had the gall to ask if she had any loves in her life, (which got quite the reaction from the crowd, including myself who pointed my bat at that person and said "YOU WATCH YOUR BOUNDARIES, MISTER!") and her answer was she has only ONE love: Crescent Rose. XD

-On the subject of favorite food besides cookies, she said that she's always wanted to try pizza. Apparently it DOESN'T exist in Remnant which is a damn crying shame. Hopefully someone gets around to inventing it once Salem's permanently out of the picture...

-If she could swap her semblance with anyone else, she would switch with Yang, due to her being a little clumsy and running into things. So she would like to get a little stronger when THAT happens.

-While she's more familiar with DC Superheroes, someone asked who she likes from the Marvel side of things. To the delight of many of us, she said she'd like to meet Miles Morales since he wears red and black like her.

-Another person asked about if Zwei has any family, and she said he did come from a large litter. When things settle down for Remnant at large, she would like to find his family. (They'd probably have to go to space to find his big brother, lol.)

-Since I'm such a huge One Piece dork, I asked what kind of Devil Fruit she would like to eat. Apparently there's a similar story in Remnant called "Single Bit," and she ultimately chose the Gum-Gum Fruit. (Wonder if she knows about the truth behind THAT one...)

And in what was a surprise to us all, Neath Oum himself made an appearance! He asked a simple question how she felt coming back to Remnant. I took the opportunity to shake his hand, just as a sign of goodwill to him and his family.

Soon after that, it was time for the official RWBY panel!

We basically got news about merch, the V9 Soundtrack and home video release dates, thoughts and reactions about the recent season, and even got treated to a sneak peek at Volume 10! (Won't spoil it here, but someone did record and paste to YouTube, so have it that if you really wanna see it.)

Nicest part about this panel was all the free stuff they literally tossed out to the crowd before it started! I managed to snag some new swag in the process:

Having done all that, I packed it all in to eat, sleep, and get ready for the most important day of my life so far...

Day 3: The Good, The Elite, and The Bumbleby

After grabbing breakfast at a nearby iHop, I ventured once more to the convention center. After more random things, I first showed up for the life RWBY Grimm Campaign session, with Lindsay Jones guest playing as "Taco Cat!"

The mission was to find a hitman known as "The Bengal" in a nightclub. In true to life fashion, there were great rolls, and more then several mistakes and jokes being made. XD I clearly missed out on a lot with their previous experiences.

After that came the Death Battle panel!

This had it's share of crazy AI-generated Death Battle mad libs, a big Q&A session, and a preview of the oncoming fight between Darth Vader and Obito Uchiha. I took the opportunity to give a shout-out for having my friend @akumath on their team, and AGAIN reassuring them that they were right about Yang vs. Tifa, before asking if they'd do a Death Battle based off their DBX episodes. Since some of the results of those left me a little more than disappointed. But because I got chosen to ask a question, I was given a free Death Battle shirt!

Having done all that, the time finally came to achieve my ultimate goal for the weekend and personally meet the cast of RWBY. Definitely took a bit of patience on my part, as the line was understandably long, not to mention we were allowed only ONE item to have signed because they had to stick to a schedule. But eventually the time came for my turn to step before Lindsay, Kara, Arryn, and Barb. So I first gave them a proper greeting:

With whatever time I had to speak to all of them at once, I made sure to tell them all how much the show and their characters have meant to me over the years and are still special to me today. It wasn't easy, I got a little emotional doing so, making sure not to completely lose my composure in the process.

Having said as much as I could while they signed my poster, I made sure to inform them all about some gifts I had for them. Unfortunately I couldn't pass them off personally, but I made sure they all knew they were getting art prints of RWBY pics I commissioned previously. However, I had something SPECIAL in mind for Arryn specifically...

YOU CAN STOP SCROLLING NOW IF YOU SKIPPED EVERYTHING ELSE. XD

To explain, as someone who had been crushing on Yang ever since the day the Yellow trailer debuted, I wanted to symbolically and spiritually concede defeat in that Blake was always meant for Yang and not me. (Or my RWBY OC, rather.) And while technically I could hire people to write fics and draw pics of me getting down and dirty with them both, realistically I had to do the right thing for myself so I could wake up with a clear conscience going forward so that they know I fully support Bumbleby being canon.

That being said, I gifted Arryn with a special item that I dubbed "The Beekeper." And clearly it made quite an impression from the looks on their faces there. XD

What exactly IS "The Beekeeper," you ask? Well, I'm going to keep it as a surprise. Want to make it a "you had to be there" thing between me, them, and whatever witnesses happened to catch my special gift. I will however, reveal "The Beekeeper" if Arryn herself happens to show it off on her socials. Maybe it will help if the same pic gets more likes on IG? Until then...IT IS A MYSTERY.

After that, I got my prize shot!

Having done all that, I made sure before departing to have some personal words with Barbara. And left with my complete reward:

Having cleared another dream in my life, I retired for the night before flying back home.

Epilogue:

So here we are. Me having achieved another personal dream of mine, despite how many times I had to deal with the brick walls that were put up in front of me. And thanks to the shirt I ordered from the RT Store ahead of time combined with some purchases I made at the con, I even have a nice little Bumbleby collection going on:

I don't want to sound TOO stereotypical for how I want to put a bow on this whole thing...but I might as well wing it as best I can:

If you want something bad, as 3 Live Kru once said: Do the damn thang. No matter how long it takes and what you gotta spend to get it, the payoff will ALWAYS be worth it in the end. And once you've done that, move onto the next goal with all the time you have in the world. You never know when it'll be your last.

Upon further research they definitely just made up Nolan's queerness. The wiki cites "RWBY Books RTX 2020 Panel" as the time E.C Meyers said Nolan was gay but there wasn't a panel for the books that year. The fandom just heard something was confirmed at a panel and ran with it...I can use this...

Hi! it's funny that you're asking me about this right now because i bought myself a new pc yesterday. ♡ I used to play on my macbook air mid-2020 with windows 10 installed via bootcamp (1.1 ghz quad-core intel core i5 processor, 8 gb ram, 256 gb ssd and intel iris plus graphics 1536 mo) on high settings. So from now i play on a hp victus gaming pc which is perfect for my needs. also i run my game on max settings with a 59 gb mods folder.

specs : intel core i5-12400F, 512gb ssd, 16 gb ram, nvidia geforce rtx 3060. I hope this helps! x

Thess vs Quasi-Necessities

So even after the holidays, I still had a significant amount of overtime 'windfall', for lack of a better term - it was only as large as it was because that back pay from August and September hit my account at the same time. Anyway, before I dumped it into savings, I decided to have a think about whether there was anything really big that I needed, that it was better to get now with the after-Christmas sales and everything instead of waiting. I thought about cookware and the like, but none of that seemed urgent enough. I mean, my kitchen is still tiny, and that won't change for awhile, so I'm not as fired up to get more Kitchen Stuff as I could be.

Then I hit upon a Facebook memory and realised that Gilmore, my beloved PC, is five years old. I've been using the requirements for running the Silent Hill 2 remake as a guideline for what I need to be running, and while my CPU just about still stands up (i5), my graphics card is running way, way behind (NVIDIA GTX 1060). Probably not doing me any favours with Baldur's Gate 3 either. Now, obviously I can't afford anything top of the line - that's running up to £1k and that just eats everything. But I could afford a GeForce RTX 3060, which is a significant upgrade and will be arriving on Saturday.

So ... cue the mild to moderate anxiety as I install a new graphics card for the first time in years. It's been awhile. I'll probably have to upgrade the whole machine soon (well, soonish), but this'll do for now. Looking at the Baldur's Gate 3 specs, my current card is somewhere between the minimum specs and the recommended specs, and is closer to the minimum, so that may explain the few issues I've had with it lately. So the mild to moderate anxiety will be worth it.

Thing is, I tend not to notice that kind of thing overmuch just because I mostly play indie games or games that are over a decade old (or both) and I think BG3 is the only game I have that's really graphics-intensive from the standard of the 2020s. So I guess it's not a necessity, exactly, but seriously, that graphics card wasn't exactly top of the line five years ago. It was probably time. But obviously I still have a bit of sticker shock over the whole thing, to go along with the mild to moderate "putting new things in my computer" anxiety. I mean, I know I can afford it without any problem whatsoever, and I know I can install a fucking graphics card without melting anything, but I still have the anxiety. My brain is awful.

Pratt & Whitney concludes important review of the NGAP engine project

Pratt & Whitney, an RTX company, completed a critical evaluation of its Next Generation Adaptive Propulsion (NGAP) offering with the U.S. Air Force, bringing the program closer to the completion of its detailed project review.

The team is now working to test on the ground its NGAP prototype, known as XA103, which is expected to take place in the late 2020s.

"We are adopting digital transformation with NGAP and changing the customer experience throughout the development process in order to quickly and efficiently provide these advanced adaptive engines," said Jill Albertelli, president of the Military Engine business at Pratt & Whitney. "This technology is fundamental to maintaining aerial superiority, which is why Pratt & Whitney has made significant investments in research and development and advanced manufacturing. Ongoing government funding for the development of sixth-generation propulsion should remain a high priority to support critical platform milestones and the readiness of combat jets."

The engine will improve the performance that is critical to enabling future air domain capabilities, which are necessary to ensure that the U.S. Air Force achieves air superiority and face constantly evolving challenges.

NGAP technologies will provide advanced survivability, fuel efficiency and robust energy and thermal management. These are necessary to allow the necessary range, the capacity of weapons and sensors and the persistence that future air domain platforms will require to meet the evolving operational needs.

Hi! I've seen a couple of people dragging you on twitter, and while I don't agree with them and think they were rude, I do agree that the terrain textures look kinda like pudding. Even if this is a preference, ansel filters don't help. I've seen you use them in all your visual mods and I don't think this is fair because what people see doesn't look exactly like that, people need to see a before and after in a texture replacement. And I also wanted to ask you, for what audience was your beta skin created exactly? Because the only way to make it look good is to use ansel filters and I'm sure almost no one uses them with The Sims 3. Please don't take this as a negative, I don't want to look like those people and I've already seen that you've received harsh criticism but you need to do something about ansel filters because people don't understand what they are seeing. Putting that aside, I do think you are doing a good job and the wall replacements look very good, although your style is quite far from what is the essence of The Sims 2 and that can be seen kinda off, it fits better in The Sims 3 imo.

Fortunately my memory is so quick to eliminate these situations that I don't even remember when it happened xD

In 2020, when I went back to working on OldSunset with everything, I ended up discovering Ansel filters. And they changed my life, because for the first time I was able to have a game as beautiful as anyone who shared screenshots with reshade and never showed their preset. And when I used it, my game looked completely different due to lack of knowledge.

With more and more people asking me how I managed to make my game look good, I identified an opportunity to grow my audience by doing one of the things I love, teaching. So I started teaching. I started doing Sunday lives, in my pajamas, teaching, answering questions and showing the results.

From then on I started to imagine:

When I started oldsunset I didn't have the best computer, I had (if I'm not mistaken) a 9500 gt from Nvidia. It met my needs but it wasn't the best card in the world.

In 2019 I decided that I would invest in a better graphics card as a birthday present for myself, so I gave myself an RTX 2060, it took over a year for me to discover that I could use Ansel filters on the TS3. Again, when I found out was also when I started teaching.

As I was making this knowledge accessible to everyone, I figured: If more people can see how amazing ts3 can be with this, more people can come back to create amazing mods for ts3. It's a two-way street. So I started teaching IDEALIZING this future: "In the future, all gamers will have a graphics card with access to Ansel filters and will be able to leave behind old, outdated looks and embrace new, defined looks."

That future may or may not be now, but one thing is for sure, I won't go back without Ansel filters. As much as I tried throughout this period. It simply doesn't work.

That said, once I see the game from another perspective, details that didn't bother me before started to bother me. The textures started to become very demarcated, pixelated and with an aesthetic style that I didn't like. So I started creating mods to solve this. You might say, "Wouldn't it be easier to just reduce the definition of the Ansel filters?" And the answer is: "No." Because from that point on, I saw the whole game in a blur.

As for whether it's fair or not, I'm creating for the future and I'm creating for a period where I see everyone using this knowledge to their advantage to make the game more beautiful, that being said, I create with that idea in mind. Will everyone join? Probably not, there are people satisfied with the game's current aesthetics. There are people who are proud of this and that's okay, they are different audiences and probably people who won't consume what I create. Just like I don't consume cc alpha which completely changes the aesthetics of some items in the game.

In all my content I try to be as transparent as possible that I am displaying my cc with filter presets that I teach you how to use.

In other words, I'm not depriving the public of this knowledge to make the game equal (which, by the way, in this case would be a little unfair)

As much as you think that a lot of people don't use it, I can see especially on more active Tumblrs, channels, etc., that I follow that there are a lot of people using it. Even on my server, when people share images, my subscribers are also using them. Now, I know that there is a disparity between those who use it and those who don't, but I estimate that this is due to two situations:

-Lack of knowledge on the subject (which I help resolve) -Lack of a compatible video card (which time and money over the years can help resolve)

Then you realize that there are two problems that have a solution.

You have a great point and I really appreciate it. It's a little annoying when we see something with one quality and when we put it in our game it has another. However, I allow myself not to feel guilty about it, because I teach you to get the same results, I literally take your hand and say, "I have nothing to hide, here's what I did"

If you can't have the same look today, I'm the same person who has been through this in the past and I can tell you: "When you get the chance, knowledge will be here waiting for you"

So that's what guides me on my production journey. The idea that at some point everyone who has access to this knowledge will also have visual content that perfectly matches this aesthetic. At least, from my point of view. Aesthetics is something particular and everyone has a different vision of what is beautiful.

The wall panels I'm making in ts2 go through the same situation. They are what they are because I built them with a set of filters overlaid on top of the game. It's not the same without the filters. But, again, it is not information that I hide, I always make it clear in everything I do.

That said, I hope that in the future this all makes sense and everyone can play their games from this perspective (if that's what they want)

Holy shit go to the RTX website and go to where they list their badge tiers for the con. Fucking 650 for 2 lottery chances for a autograph. 1500 for 2 guaranteed autographs. Also cost 20 to watch live streams from home, but those streams will have cut out any exclusive announcements or teasers. What a shit company.

Everyone's talking about this today and for good reason. I mean, this would be an eyebrow-raiser at any time, but specifically now, in 2022? I know a lot of people have reached a point where they're acting like the pandemic is over (it's not), but even if that were the case, we're smack-dab in the middle of all the long-term repercussions. Unemployment rates have just barely made it back to what they were pre-2020. Gas prices are skyrocketing. Generally speaking, the cost of living is insane right now. If you want to hop a plane to RTX be prepared for a hefty bill and the risk of another summer Covid surge (to say nothing of, you know, being there). If someone told me I had to shell out 650 for a pass and two autographs — on top of all the other expenses of going — I would have laughed and said sorry, I can't swing that. But that price for just the chance of autographs? That's where it gets insulting. These prices are steep for a lot of fans, especially right now. The very least RT can do is guarantee a reward that makes shelling out hundreds of dollars worth it.

And what's the point of paying for a stream if they're going to cut out what 99% of the fanbase is there for? I mean sure, people enjoy the rest of the panel, but that's the kind of stuff that if you're not already there in person — or getting it for free — you're probably fine with looking up later as a transcription of what was said, a shitty phone recording, etc. It's been over a year since the end of Volume 8. People want information on Volume 9. So eliminating that precise information rather defeats the purpose of tuning in. Or, more specifically, defeats the purpose of giving 20 bucks for the privilege of tuning in. To be honest I don't think 20 is a bad price at all for virtually attending the event, but that opinion rests entirely on the buyer getting to watch the important bits.

I get that they need to make money — they're a company, after all — but there will always be fans with the desire and the means to pay for certain perks. You can turn a profit without pissing off the majority of the fanbase. In my experience, stunts like this just encourage people to pirate and/or ignore the event until information is free. It'll probably be the latter given that excluding announcements and teasers is likely a way to keep people from screen recording and sharing the content... but fans always find a way lol. And if they can't, the result certainly won't be to pay for an event that doesn't include what they wanted in the first place...

Also, not to be That Person™, but are RT peeps worth 650 for an autograph, let alone just the chance at an autograph? I mean yes, that price is for the event as a whole too, but let's be real, the rest of the additional stuff (lanyard, 10% discount on the store — which is easily eaten up by this price — early access to exhibition hall) aren't really what most fans will be interested in paying that kind of money for. It's the autograph. And I'm by no means an autograph expert, but most of those I've come across are 50-100, reaching up into the 400-500 range for A-list celebrities... which I wouldn't call the RT crew. It just seems WAY too expensive to me, all on its own, but right now when so many in the U.S. are struggling, travel simply isn't an option for most, there's risk involved, etc.? That's insane. Obviously it's been like this for a very long time, but we've absolutely left the "RWBY is a passion project made by nerds just like you who want to share their creativity ^_^" like no RT isn't just looking for fair compensation for a popular product, they're out to squeeze as much money as possible out of your wallet during the worst possible time. I hope the higher tiers/the virtual stream bombs, showing them that no, this is not a good way to get your fanbase excited to pay for your content.

I don’t really know where to start this or what I’m even going to say, because quite frankly I still haven’t processed everything and my emotions are so all over the place it’s going to be hard to write a coherent thought. But I dunno- I just feel like venting and ranting.

I started watching AH in 2011. 11 years ago. It’s weird to say that- it never felt like it was that long. They’ve been a constant in my life, they were there for pretty much every rough patch I had in those 11 years. It’s hard to look at how much they helped me keep going now, but they really truly did.

In 2013 I lost my grandmother. AH was there. In 2014 I was mentally and verbally abused and AH was there. In 2015 I started college and AH got me through every single stressful, insane year of it. They were even a lot of my inspiration in the art projects I turned in for classes. In the summer of 2019 I fell into crippling, all-consuming depression and if it weren’t for AH (and the people I met through the community) I honestly might not be here today.

In 2020, it all crashed down around me when all of the horrid things Ryan had done came out. He was a lot of the reason I was involved in the community- I started watching his streams, and then made a Twitter, then a Tumblr. I almost walked away then. I told myself it might be best to keep my distance. In the end I found myself going back to all of my favorite comfort videos of theirs (sans-Ryan of course) and knew I really wasn’t going anywhere. They had just helped me through too much. I couldn’t walk away.

And now we’re here, in 2022. Everything that was said by them, about fostering a healthy workplace and environment… about treating everyone as equals… saying they were going to make changes… empty promises. It was all so hollow. Every single time I check Twitter, or Tumblr, or Reddit, there’s always a new horror story from a former employee.

I’m so disappointed that I ever supported them. I can admit my relationship with them was unhealthy at points, and I knew it and didn’t do anything to distance myself more until 2021- and even then I still had a first subscription and watched some videos every week. Earlier this year I went to RTX, something I’d dreamed of since I learned it existed, and genuinely had one of the greatest weekends of my life. All of those memories feel so tainted now. Looking at the badge makes me feel kind of gross now, to be honest, though I know I bought it before I knew the truth.

I’m grappling really hard with letting go of RT. I absolutely will because the last thing I’d ever want to do is give this company any more of my support after all they’ve done… but it’s so god damn hard. They’ve meant so much for me for so long. I’ve made some of my best friends through the community, and even met my now-fiancé. Obviously my relationships with them have become removed from the community sphere, but it’s still where the root of our friendship came from. It sucks that the way that I met some of the most important people in my life is tainted now.

Keeping this blog as a Michael blog is even making me feel a little weird and guilty- even though Kdin forgave him and he wouldn’t have any hand in the wage theft/other company issues. I dunno, I’m just not sure if it’s still respectful, or if I should just get rid of this blog. It’s a tough line to draw.

I just really don’t know, man.

Dell’s XPS 15 has been the workhorse of their lineup, offering significantly more CPU and GPU performance than the XPS 13 thanks to 45-Watt CPUs and powerful discrete GPUs. Dell’s redesign adds new options for the CPU and GPU, and updates the design to their new take on the XPS, featuring the same InfinityEdge display, but now in a taller 16:10 aspect ratio which matches the already updated XPS 13. Powering the new XPS is Intel’s new Comet Lake H-Series, with a 45 Watt TDP. Dell is offering Core i5, i7, and i9 models. On the GPU side, Dell is now offering the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti 4BG model, which is in-line with how NVIDIA has revamped their mobile GPU lineup for the year. Customers will be able to add up to 64 GB of DDR4-2933 RAM as well, thanks to the two SO-DIMM slots, and storage options are all PCIe SSDs from 256 GB to 2 TB. Dell is also adding a brand-new cooling system, with a vapor-chamber cooling system and increased airflow. Any additional cooling will be welcome in a system that is as thin and light as the XPS line is. One of the hallmarks of the XPS lineup is the InfinityEdge display, and for 2020’s redesign Dell has created a laptop with a 92.9% screen-to-body ratio, while still managing to fit a 720p webcam and dual microphones in the top bezel. Display options on the XPS 15 are familiar, but thanks to the 16:10 aspect ratio, should be more usable for creating and working. The base display option is a 1920x1200 100% sRGB IPS panel with a 1650:1 contrast ratio and 500 nits of brightness. If you need more, Dell also offers a 3840x2400 touch display with HDR 400, 100% Adobe RGB gamut coverage, and 94% P3 Gamut.

Battery life estimates from Dell are somewhat insane. The optional 86 Wh battery can provide up to 25 hours of battery life with the lower resolution display, which should mean even the UHD display option should offer all-day battery life. Dell has also added 3D sound with Waves Nx 3D Audio, with tuned speakers, or Waves NX headphone tracking to adjust the direction of sound to suit your head movement. Dell has moved entirely to USB-C for this generation, with two Thunderbolt 3 ports and one USB only, and Dell includes several USB-C adapters. After almost ten years away, Dell is bringing back the XPS 17, thanks to customer demand for larger displays. But thanks to the InfinityEdge display, the new XPS 17 is very compact, with Dell stating it is smaller than 48% of the 15-inch notebooks on the market today. Thin bezel designs look amazing, but the ability to pack a large screen into a much smaller chassis is one of the best reasons to opt for a notebook like this. The new XPS 17 is also Dell’s most powerful XPS ever, with the same CPU choices as the XPS 15, being Intel Comet Lake H Core i5, i7, and i9 models, but with an even larger GPU option. The XPS 17 ships with the same NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti as the XPS 15 in its base trim, but customers can also opt for the much more powerful NVIDIA RTX 2060 if they need even more compute. There are two SO-DIMM slots for up to 64 GB of RAM, and customers can purchase up to 2 TB of PCIe storage when configuring the device. On the display side, the new XPS 17 features the same 16:10 aspect ratio as the rest of the XPS lineup, with base trim offering a 1920x1200 60 Hz display with 500 nits of brightness and 1650:1 contrast for it’s sRGB gamut. Or, like the XPS 15, you can opt for a high DPI panel, with a 3840x2400 resolution and touch. The higher pixel count also includes HDR 400 certification and wide-color gamut support with 100% Adobe RGB and 94% P3.

The larger laptop gets an even larger battery, with either 56 Wh or 97 Wh options. Dell has also added more Thunderbolt 3, with four Thunderbolt 3 ports. Scrying Glass Wyrmhole (2022) Fringe dungeon synth

Yesterday, I played the newly-released Portal with RTX. It's the graphical arms-race version of the 2007 Valve Corporation game Portal. Portal asks for a measly 8 gigabytes of hard drive space. Portal with RTX adds fancy lighting and shadows. It asks for 25 gigabytes of hard drive space. The ray-tracing, HD textures, and fancier models did not make Portal with RTX "better than" Portal. It also wouldn't stop crashing until I put it in borderless windowed mode. Anyways... Didn't really expect something like Wyrmhole in my listening pool this month. It's progressive, and it's electronic, but it's not quite what we think of when we think "progressive electronic," ya feel me? It sounds like someone was challenged to make a '70s prog rock album with nothing but a sequencer, and they smartly chose not to include guitar-emulating SoundFonts, picking instead from the more obviously synth-leaning sounds. It's almost a facsimile of Yes or ELP, and it kicks a lot of ass—it's a really fun, charming album. But is it dungeon synth? I'm not entirely sure. If this came out in 1998, we probably wouldn't have counted it, but in the much more open 2020s where dungeon synth has expanded its reaches further than anyone could have imagined, it's hard to say something isn't dungeon synth. I mean, it has a wizard on the cover—that has to count for something.
