Hi! As a fellow knitter with a love for embroidery and cosplay, your Grishaverse kniting projects sound amazing! 😍 Would you be willing to share progress photos as you go? Or perhaps talk a little more about the designs, patterns, or techniques you'll use? So excited for you!
-sixofcrowsdaydreams (side blog)
Hiya, thanks so much for your interest - I'd love to share more!
My current Grishaverse knitting projects are a Healer kefta (which will probably be more along the lines of kefta-inspired than an accurate reproduction because of the material etc) and a full-size blanket of the Six Of Crows book cover (uk/us paperback edition).
For the Kefta, I'm adapting a free cardigan pattern that I'll link if anyone would like it. The pattern outlines the structure and shaping, which is mostly what I'm using it for, but is designed in a specific basket rib that I'm not using; I decided to use stockinette stitch because I think that it will be easier to embroider since I'm planning on using the Swiss Darning method. I'm teaching myself the Swiss Darning method from the wonderful book "KNIT: step by step" (Vikki Haffenden and Frederica Patmore), which I absolutely love and highly recommend. I just checked and the RRP for the book is £14.99 but I got mine for £7.99 so it might be worth looking around for where it's cheapest. I'm knitting it with DK weight yarn and so far I have the back and two front pieces complete and am currently working on the first sleeve. I used a free digital art app called Ibis Paint X to sketch out my designs for the embroidery and then overlayed them with a grid - I'm treating each square as one stitch.
The blanket it being knit in chunky weight yarn using a fair isle pattern I designed by using the same digital art app to draw and the book cover, overlay it with a grid, pixelate it, and slightly simplify the colour scheme (that was mostly due to the availability of the yarn since there are so many shades of grey in the cover). I am relatively new to colourwork, or at the very least colourwork on this scale, and this was a massive undertaking I went into with unearned confidence. Unfortunately I have now realised a massive mistake I made in the fair isle technique that means I'm going to have to undo everything I've done so far and restart, but luckily I've realised it early enough that I'm not even a quarter of the way through the project yet; if I'd done more it would be more annoying, as it stands it's not too bad but it is a setback. I've yet to decide how I'm going to back the blanket once it's complete, I have two options: 1) sew it onto either white or black fleece, 2) knit a Crooked Kingdom book cover the same size and back them onto each other. The pros of the first one is that it would give it a finished and hopefully gorgeous look, plus would be super cosy. The pro of the second option is that it would be awesome, but the con is that it might not look as neat and finished. On top of that, if I back the first one with fleece I can then knit a Crooked Kingdom one and back that with fleece, which means I get two blankets. So yeah I haven't decided yet, but I'll see how it goes and keep you guys updated.
Thanks so much for your question! If anyone has any specific requests for me to talk about regarding the knitting patterns/processes/techniques/ etc then absolutely feel free and yeah if people are interested then I will definitely put some update photos on here as I go as well :)

my copy of A Power Unbound (Illumicrate edition) arrived today and so I am going to ramble about 💫book production💫 and ✨special finishes✨!
(in case this breaks containment, I work in publishing though not for Freya Marske's publisher nor Illumicrate, and I have been terminally online in fandom and writing spaces for 20+ years)
when I heard about Marske's book deal it was both through tumblr and professional channels, and since I already liked her fanfiction I decided to Watch Out For Interesting Things, because I wanted to see how tradpub was going to treat a fandom-originated author - not the first one in tradpub by any means, but one I knew writes unabashedly queer stories and I wanted to see how that would play out in a world that had only just started making mainstream queer media
so, book 1, A Marvellous Light. I preordered the Waterstones special edition because there was a Waterstones special edition and I hadn't expected there to be
Tumblr media
the finishes on this book are:
wibalin case (or arlin, or any other imitation bookcloth paper, brand is irrelevant) with matt varnish
title printed on spine
dustjacket with matt lamination, spot uv and embossing
sprayed edges in one colour (pantone or imitation pantone - this is different from 4 colour)
this is very neat and a bit splashy, but not so splashy as to break the budget - this is a reasonable amount of splashy for a debut author that the publisher is planning to push hard/has expectations to sell well. I personally expected this to sell really well also, for multiple reasons I won't get into here, and that as a result we'd get more fun finishes on the next book in the series
so, book 2, A Restless Truth, the Waterstones special edition which i again pre-ordered
Tumblr media
everything about this book screams 'book 1 did really well so let's RAMP UP THE FANCY we can afford it now!
the finishes on this book are:
wibalin case
title printed on spine
dustjacket with matt lamination, spot uv, embossing, and foil
sprayed edges in one colour and a digitally printed fore edge in 4 colour
two more expensive finishes added! the retail price on this was £2 more than for AML, which let me tell you, those extra finishes do not cost that much lmao, at least not at the printers my company works with, but 2022 saw prices go up everywhere. so ehh fair's fair.
and this brings us to book 3, A Power Unbound, which didn't get a Waterstones special edition which I was upset about for SO LONG because a) I wanted one to match my existing set even if the two editions didn't match to begin with as the finishes were different and b) I was worried this was a sign that book 2 hadn't performed as well (or just not performed to the publisher's expectations, which is not the same) and the publisher wouldn't justify the cost of doing another special edition - considering book 2 was sapphic that was a real worry as historically they don't sell as well as gay books. but book 3 got an Illumicrate edition instead
without writing an essay, in simple terms there's no difference between a Waterstones special edition, an independent bookshop special edition (not covered by this post) or an Illumicrate (or other boxes) special edition as they all have extra finishes and they all TCM, meaning sales are registered and counted towards bestseller lists. however there is a perceived difference for many consumers that Illumicrate editions are specialer than Waterstones or indie because they are exclusive (so are Waterstones and indie), and often are only available through mystery subscription boxes (you don't know which book or items are in the box, only the theme) or semi-transparent boxes (title is known, possibly some of the finishes, none of the items) or through single purchases of a limited nature (finishes often not revealed), which this one is.
so to sum up, the Illumicrate edition is functionally the same, but it has a different status, and perceived higher value, attached to it. considering the RRP was £23 for the Illumicrate edition but only £18.99 for ART and £16.99 for AML, this adds to the perceived higher value/status. With me so far?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the finishes on this book are:
matt lamination case (cheaper than wibalin), however printed in 4 colour
dustjacket made of some kind of plastic (I can't tell from touch which kind), which, at the printers my company works with, costs about 10-15%, of what a dustjacket of say 125gsm coated paper with matt lamination finish would cost
title digitally printed on the dustjacket
no spot uv, no embossing, no foil
sprayed edges in one colour with a digitally printed fore edge in 4 colour
does this look cool as fuck though? yes. does it look expensive? not if you know how books are made and what they cost to make. I expect this was cheaper to print than ART because dropping foil, spot UV and embossing alone is a huge saving. and ngl I was expecting the same kind of finishes on APU as for ART, perhaps with all 3 edges digitally sprayed instead of just the fore edge, perhaps with the title foiled on the spine instead of printed on. maybe it would even have endbands. so to open the parcel to see this instead was a delight, because it's different. you can see the case underneath the dust jacket! you get a fun 3D effect with the plastic overlay!
I'm not saying that the Illumicrate edition is cheap garbage, the point I'm making is manifold:
moving away from Waterstones special edition to Illumicrate special edition will make a lot of consumers thing this book is The Shit
the Illumicrate edition indeeds Looks like The Shit
you don't always need expensive finishes to wind up with a Cool end result
in conclusion: Illumicrate call me I want to talk business
Tumblr media Tumblr media
man I do wish my copy of AML had a cooler fore edge though so they could all match

Two weeks in with a Nokia flip phone and no social media...
And I'm feeling better. Honestly, though. I do not miss social media. Especially the control it had over my emotions, lol. However, I do deeply miss memes. Memes were my oxygen. And I do miss the casual interactions with old and new friends on Insta. Facebook has been permanently deleted and my Instagram has been deactivated - not sure what next. But I am indeed enjoying my low-tech life using a Nokia flip.
New toy (pictured: Sennheiser HD599, affordable audiophile open-back wired headphones)...
How am I filling my time? MUSIC. Like the good old days. Like, listening to music in lossless with a wired head set kind of old days. These HD599s are a cult fave in the audiophile community for their accurate audio presentation, wide soundstage and resolution. Got them for £157, RRP £199. Basically it's like listening to your fave artists in the studio with them, as long as you feed them a decent source (I'm using Apple Music, lossless + hi ress lossless). Technically I'm not using a proper DAC, just Apple's lighting to 3.5mm adapter (a secret DAC by Apple) for my iPad Pro to drive these HD599s. The sound is out of this world. I'm hearing things in tracks I've not heard before. My current fave artist for about two years now is Zach Bryan (alt-country, americana - https://www.zachbryan.com/music). He's the only artist who can currently make me cry and that says alot.
Note-taking with pen and paper...
I have now resorted to my mini Muji notebook and pen jot down to dos, shopping lists and ideas. My Nokia doesn't have a note taking app, but it does have a simple calendar that I really like. My handwriting is awful, though. Over ten years of smartphone use would do that to a person.
My current EDC (every day carry) is as follows...
a) Nokia 2660 Flip, b) iPad, AirPods Pro 2, c) Muji notepad + gel pen, d) Kindle, e) on gym days... Apple Watch SE (for music)
SMS...
You'd think texting is horrendous on a feature phone, but suprisingly I would say it's very doable. Especially if predictive text is available, which it is on the Nokie 2660 Flip. Fine, you can't type quickly but the tactility of the keypad is lovely. It really feels like you're putting in more effort in your messages than a touch screen.
Less 'digital blur'...
I know such a term is used in the photo-editing world, but now I use it to describe my experience when I am presented with too much choice on streaming services or other digital media. Everything is blurring into one digital blob. With the exception of music streaming (I love the choice and I go through phases of liking certain genres/artists), I really do miss CDs and Blu-rays. I've now reconnected my 10 year old Blu-ray player to my 1080p projector to tap back into my Blu-ray collection. Thankfully, it's a good time to get back into them, as you can buy preowned Blu-rays for a couple quid on eBay including postage. You can't beat the picture quality and bitrate. Not to mention actually owning a physical copy no streaming service can take away from you, lol.
Less noise...
As I've deleted WhatsApp (the Nokia 2660 isn't compatible with WhatsApp, only the US version of it aka 2680 Flip), I've not been in any group chats for over two weeks and it's been bliss. Yes, that also includes my family ones. I do not miss them. The total lack of noifications on my Nokia (apart from calls, SMS and calendar events) has contributed to lower levels of general anxiety and distractions. I am now able to fully concentrate during a TV show or even when listening to an album. I am fully present and immersed. Even my conversations with real people have improved greatly; I am more patient and empathetic. Mainly because I am not half-scrolling on my phone anymore. Gosh, smartphones have really killed off real human connection.
Do I miss my iPhone...?
I think if you can have a healthy relationship with a smarthphone (not using social media, no doom scrolling etc), I think they pose as a vital tool in the modern world. But as I do not have that level of self control, my Nokia was the intervention I needed. Two weeks in I don't actually miss it. I miss how it was a tool to allow me to self-soothe (not in a healthy way). So breaking up with my smartphone was probably for the best. It's made me get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Awkward silences, quiet stares into space, being one with your thoughts. Just like the good old days.
Where is my iPhone?
It's tucked away in my drawer, fully charged with £5 loaded onto a seperate sim inserted in it to be used PAYG. It is only to be used in emergencies or when I am travelling to new distant lands e.g. South London, lol. Literally it just has Google Maps, Uber and email. Not even music. I don't want to see my iPhone as an entertainment device (I am not against digital entertainment, but I am against small smartphone devices that hijack your attention all day/night).
Am I bored?
Yes and no. Yes, because I loved the short-form media that exists on Instagram (spending sometimes hours per evening consuming it). And keeping up with my favourite meme accounts, musicians and rugby teams on there, too. But no, because I've just gone back to classic ways on keeping oneself entertained... music and movies.
Who am I texting?
Literally, just three close friends I've known for over 15 years. No body else.
Will I keep using my Nokia 2660 Flip?
Yes, for the time being. I think I found a compromise with using smart tech. Just not using a smartphone has been crucial to this compromise, as it has literally improved my mental health in only two weeks. All this extra time and energy has allowed me to focus on therapy (I have an amazing therapist I speak to weekly) and addressing key life challanges I have been avoiding for so long.

FTL: Faster Than Light
Developer: Subset Games Publisher: Subset Games Rrp: £6.99 (Humblebundle, Steam) £7.19 (Advanced Edition on Gog.com) Released: 14th September 2012 Available on: Humblebundle, Gog.com and Steam Played Using: Mouse and keyboard Approximate game length: 15 hours +
In space no one can something, something, yadda, yadda. I think we all know the quote. You know what you can do in space? Die. There are quite a few ways to do it, although apparently the most common is having your ship blow up.
FTL: Faster Than Light is a strategic roguelite set in space. You take control of a ship and its crew that is desperately trying to stay ahead of a hostile fleet that wants to destroy you before you can complete your mission. When it comes to roguelites few reach the level of success and penetration that FTL has. Sadly at the time of writing FTL takes a while to load up (a little over a minute) when started. I tried this with both Gog.com and Steam versions and the result was same. Apparently this has something to do with a Windows update. Thankfully a quick web search shows a few ways to fix this that aren't too difficult to implement especially with the Steam version (which reduced the time to about seven seconds).
Tumblr media
You control the actions of each member of the crew, assigning where they work, where they move to and when they heal. Without your direct commands these crew members will diligently carry on doing whatever task they were last assigned even if they're suffocating from a lack of oxegen. There are certain actions they will do without direction but they must occur within the room they are in, such as fighting intruders, putting out fires, repairing systems and fixing holes in the ship.
When you start the game for the first time only one ship with three crew members is available, with more unlocking as you play and complete special quests. Different layouts for the various ships can also be unlocked by completing certain tasks.
Tumblr media
As I mentioned before, your ship is fleeing a vast, but fairly slow-moving, fleet. This gives you a little time to investigate the sector you're in. Every new location will have an event that occurs, these can be quite wide ranging in their variety although ship to ship combat is very frequent. In some cases the augmentations and equipment your ship has and even the personel can open up new choices during events. Each time you change location, or 'jump' as the game puts it, your ship consumes fuel. This fuel can be purchased from stores that you find on your journey, salvaged from wrecks you discover (or create) and also be given as a reward for completed missions that you can take on.
Scrap is the currency for everything in this game, be it upgrades to your ship or hiring new crew members. Upgrading the ship doesn't require you to go to a store, although its at stores that you can purchase new weapons, crew and ship augmentations.
Tumblr media
The combat in this game would be a chaotic affair if it wasn't for the implementation of the pause button which gives you time to issue commands to your crew, pick targets and adjust where your ships energy goes. If the hull points of your ship reach zero your ship explodes and ends your run. The hull can usually only be repaired at stores in exchange for scrap although there are some exceptions such as having a specific sort of droid on your ship or getting part of it repaired as a reward.
Warning: This game is really addictive. Even though I kept losing and having to walk away from it out of sheer frustration I just kept finding myself with a desire to return and try again and again and again. So I suppose that makes it a recommendation from me?
If this appeals to you perhaps try;

THE SPIRIT OF THE OPEN
To celebrate the competition’s 150th year, Loch Lomond has launched The Open Course Edition 2022 and The Open Special Edition 2022.
This year’s Open championship will be held on The Old Course in St Andrews in Fife, Scotland, from 14-17 July.
Tumblr media
The Open Special Edition 2022 has been created in partnership with golfer Colin Montgomerie. Colin Stuart Montgomerie, OBE is a Scottish professional golfer. He has won a record eight European Tour Order of Merit titles, including a streak of seven consecutively from 1993 to 1999
Tumblr media
Colin Montgomery was the first official signing as a Loch Lomond Whiskies Brand Ambassador in 2018. Since turning professional in 1987, Montgomerie has recorded 52 tournament victories across the world and became European #1 in 1993.Ryder Cup success followed as a player before he led Europe to a famous victory as Captain at Celtic Manor in 2010.
Montgomerie has worked with Loch Lomond Whiskies to promote the full product range worldwide, including multiple “limited editions” which carry his name.
Father’s Day 2022 Sunday, 19 June. The Open Special Edition, available to buy from Loch Lomond Whiskies’ website, The Open Special Edition is priced at RRP £45 (US$56) while the Course Edition retails for £225 (US$281).

SH’s golf ad will not help SS whisky in The Open.🤷
SH follows the money, and it's not St. Andrews, it's America where he impresses them with his best Scottish accent. The money has changed SH. A model and golfer (not in the ranking) daughter of a PGA Master Professional won't help SH at the British Open. St. Andrews is Colin Montgomerie's home, where SH’s whisky 🥃 has no place.
NBC missed an opportunity to invite Colin, a real golfer, to perform its golf advert. On the other hand, Hayden's story is old and doesn't fit.
Tumblr media
@diggsydogsquee This post refers to SH having no chance of getting his whisky placed at the British Open in St. Andrews despite his efforts being well paid by NBC, USA, and Peacock to feature him in their The Open adverts. Particular interest in the Father's Day reference is Colin Montgomerie's whisky, not SH’s whisky 🥃 or his IG performance he did to make up his poor sales of SS whisky which, coincidentally, is made at Loch Lomond Distillery. It was not because of a game of bad taste a donation to the DGR that was withdrawn. But you're right, Sam is single, has no children and has never been married. It would be interesting not to come here with the folly of idolatry because this is inherently foolish, to remain in ignorance. I do not agree with that.

Uncovered: The Ninja Tales
2. Mr Scruff - Trouser Jazz Deluxe 20th Anniversary Edition (2023) AND Ninja Tuna Deluxe Triple LP out today! (29/03/24)
Part II of our ‘Ninja Tales’ series for our ‘Uncovered’ blog explores the creative for two re-releases from Manchester’s own Andy Carthy aka Mr Scruff on Ninja Tune. We speak to Ninja Tune's Head of Production, Sean Preston to get the full story.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Former fine art student at Sheffield University, DJ and Cartoonist, Andy Carthy’s iconic line art cartoon drawings have illustrated gig flyers, record sleeves and merchandise and usually accompany him at gigs as live animated visuals. Mr Scruff's cartoons feature across his body of work are a big part of his identity, instantly recognisable to electronic music fans.
Trouser Jazz, originally released in 2002, celebrated its 20th anniversary with a Deluxe anniversary edition on a double LP with blue/red vinyl to match the cover palette of the original iconic artwork by Mr. Scruff & Airside with an “infinity” peelable trouser sticker on the cover to reveal silver and gold foiled 20th anniversary trousers.
Tumblr media
Ninja Tuna, the fourth studio album by Mr Scruff, originally released on CD in 2008 through Carthy's personal Ninja Tune, is the latest Mr Scruff album to get a fancy makeover and is released on 29th March 2024. Now available for the first time on vinyl, the record is presented as a deluxe triple LP housed in a gatefold greyboard sleeve, complete with bonus tracks, pressed on Biovinyl and also with an “infinity” peelable tuna sticker on the cover.
Tumblr media
We spoke to Ninja Tune’s Head of Production, Sean Preston to get the story behind the creative.
Sean explains, “These two records first came out decades ago when budget and RRP limited what we could do. Ninja Tuna didn’t even get a vinyl release. The two new versions utilise the same "gecko sticker” design to take a product concept and roll it out across the act's work. When ‘Trouser Jazz’ came up for an anniversary edition, it felt like a really good opportunity to delve into the original artwork, honour it, and bring it to life. It’s a fun, interactive and borderline silly design package, that is apposite to Scruff’s playful and tongue-in-cheek cartoons.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He continues, “I had become aware of a “gecko” sticker thanks to music product maestros SixtySix Productions, specifically Emily Robbins there. The sticker is in fact more like velcro than a normal sticker adhesive, which is why it’s often called "infinity peel”. In fact, like velcro you prob get a few thousand re-peels of it, so whilst “infinity” is a stretch, it’ll take some debunking in practice.”

Sean continues, “We took the trousers which make up the original front cover’s central feature, and created new 20 year anniversary trousers, foiled in gold with a beautiful silver belt. Then, traditional marketing sensibility troll that I am, I placed the standard blue trousers over the top as a sticker. The trick here is not only covering up the expensive bit to leave as a surprise for buyers, but to create a small deboss into the sleeve where the foil trousers are, and present the record as it originally was, with the old school blue trousers sitting in place, flush against its surroundings. Of course, at home, once those trousers are peeled off, the owner of the record can put them wherever they want. My Trouser Jazz trousers currently sit on my copy of Bob Dylan’s Street Legal.”

With today’s release of Ninja Tuna on vinyl for the first time the new package design was in keeping with Trouser Jazz's concepts.
Sean told us, “Part of the decision to present Trouser Jazz with this peel and reveal gatefold sleeve was made with an eye on future Scruff reissues. This week we release Nina Tuna on vinyl for the first time, and as a 3LP no less! Its cover features a centrally located tuna fish. No free copies to anyone guessing what we’ve done with it! Andy (Mr Scruff) was very up for reinterpreting the original CD artwork, and got to work on new illustrations to exist alongside original illustrations."

"The main tuna dude on the front gets a beautiful new coat (scale even?!) of silver. It really shimmers in the sun. It’s so fun working with artists like Scruff, he’s totally open to ideas and has such vital advice and feedback. I think initially I was steering towards a greyboard to replicate the original CDs, but availability of that type of board wasn’t what it was 15 years ago, and it tends to be difficult to work with when you want to use heavier versions of it that are necessary for a heavy duty gatefold sleeve.”

Sean continues, “It’s a small thing, but I’m dangerously self-satisfied with the inner sleeves. They spell out NINJA TUNA between them, and reveal vinyl discs pressed onto BioVinyl, which is a relatively new thing in the world of vinyl offered by Optimal Media in Germany. There are a few specifics about Biovinyl that make it a better choice for the environment, but the key is using biogenic waste like cooking oil rather than petroleum. It’s something we are trying to encourage more use of, with one eye on truly eco-friendly, carbon neutral vinyl alternatives that are in development.”

We already loved both these records, but Ninja Tuna getting a first release on vinyl is particularly pleasing for us of course. We shall be peeling and un-peeling our copies with glee! We were also extremely chuffed to have got some words from Andy Carthy (Mr Scruff) himself about this project, “I really enjoyed collaborating on the design with Ninja Tune’s Sean Preston. Both albums needed a lot of re-drawing & re-writing hand-written text, so I did the bit that I am good at (potato drawings & writing) & Sean did the professional design bit, which I struggle with beyond basic illustrator fiddling. The daft hype stickers were fun to do as well!”
With Mr Scruff's back catalogue getting this delightful vinyl upgrade, we're hopeful that there’s another one on the way to complete the set.... !!
