Friendly Nov 5th reminder: The theme in 15x18 was loss (hence the title Despair). This theme was underlined through the motif Berens chose, where he tied the theme of loss specifically to despairing over the sudden, traumatic loss of the person you are in love with. Romantically.
I’ll repeat that for the nosebleed section: the theme of loss in 15x18 is specifically stated through the repeated narrative motif of a character in love losing the one they are in love with.
This motif was established with Charlie losing Stevie and was furthered around the midpoint by Sam losing Eileen. Berens could have left the motif as a bookend, but he went one step further and had two deep losses in the narrative to create foreshadowing through this motif for the gut punch of the final loss. Why? I would assume because he really wanted those looking for it to know beyond a doubt that this narrative choice was intentional. And that it served a deeper purpose than simply creating a mirror moment of people losing each other.
(and yes I’m speaking for Berens and I shouldn’t but the writer/screenwriter/editor in me cannot fathom that this choice wasn’t intentional so I’m leaning on that as the basis of my assumption)
Again: the theme of loss in 15x18 is specifically stated through the repeated narrative motif of a character in love losing the one they are in love with.
And why did Berens choose a freshly in love and happy couple and then another not so freshly but equally narratively stated to be in love couple to tear apart in order to explore the theme of loss?
Because our final pair weren’t stated to be in love with each other because they couldn’t be outright stated. And yes it will hurt forfuckingever that they weren’t outright stated, but Berens still gave us an unequivocal statement through this intentional and deeply resonating motif. Because through it, he told us that Dean loves Cas back.
Charlie was in love with Stevie and was the one left to deal with the loss. Sam was in love with Eileen and was left to deal with the loss. So, it’s not a leap to assume we’re meant to understand that the person sitting with his head in his hands and having to deal with his loss is not simply dealing with the loss of his best friend (though that too) but the loss of the person he is in love with.
Dean might not have said the words, but Berens signalled Dean’s true feelings to us very loudly and very clearly.
I’ll always be grateful for that.
Happy 5th, lovelies!!

I've had this post in my draft for weeks and then saw this gifset and it illustrated exactly what I wanted to get at with my post, so I decided to post this now.
Robert Berens absolutely GETS IT, and it plays across multiple episodes, in multiple seasons, and culminates in 15.18. He tends to write Dean rawly yet lovingly, peeling back the layers, and going deep in examining Dean. Exploring anger and trauma in Dean beyond just a touch and go to acknowledge it's there, but going deep, and paying off story seeds that were planted years back. Writing Dean as someone empathetic and good and loving and forgiving, and also traumatized, full of grief, pain, fear, anger, and he couldn't see his own light.
Bobo’s approach does tend to lean into pain, sadness, trauma -- there's a strong thematic thru line concerning Dean’s fears about himself. That he's only the pain, the trauma, the fear, the anger, or the ability to make the kill. Dean's scared of his own darker parts of his own psyche. And with the major Jungian themes playing out in the final seasons, Bobo took Dean through a reckoning with his own shadow, over more than one episode, and it culminates with Cas basically flooding things with light. The truth. Of who Dean is, through Cas's eyes.
It was never ever about shaming Dean for feelings. Or for being angry. It was about how he sees himself and Dean being unable to see how those who love him see him, how Cas sees him. The truth about his whole self. Jung's idea about the shadow is that people need to accept the darker parts of themselves, the negative feelings, and the good ones, to become whole.
Trauma and fear and grief and anger (all valid) sometimes threaten to drown Dean. It's something that happens to people. But we aren't just one thing, Dean isn't just one thing. Our traumas and fears and our darker sides are part of us but do not define us and are not the limits of who we are.
Dean never stops fighting and he never loses himself to it and that is immensely heroic. There are multiple authors who explored that on spn but Bobo was the main architect of that messy, beautiful, painful complicated emotional journey for Dean.

From Scripthunt or panels, do we know when the stage direction about not reciprocating was put in and by whose suggestion? Was it Berens himself and how early, for example, or was it a late add after insistence by someone else (and whom)
Those words were in all the versions of the scripts that we've had or heard about. Berens said he wrote the scene the very first thing for the season and I haven't heard reports of that scene being edited, although only he would know for sure. Multiple cast and crew have said there was no later editing of that scene and we have at least 3 separate versions of that script. They did change some things, like the name. It was originally "The Truth".
"Can't reciprocate" can mean a variety of things, including that Dean can't reciprocate in the moment, so I don't think it means much in isolation.
However, there were crew/other people who leaked the scene before the show ended. I got a copy of the script early on - I think April? - and the reason some people leaked it is because they were upset over how Castiel was treated in the narrative.
One of my early sources, who ended up being right about basically everything they said, also said that Dean reciprocating was never pitched or planned at all. They said that Berens wrote the scene with "can't reciprocate" in part because it was part of his strategy to get TPTB to approve it because it was a bit of a hard sell. I don't believe that Berens has ever publicly confirmed or denied this, but since my source was right about so many things, I don't see a reason to disbelieve it.
Misha and RSJ have talked about how it was a surprise that the show even went there. Misha said that he didn't think that they would ever even confirm Castiel's side. They've talked about how people had to be sold on it, including Jensen. At a recent convention, Misha talked about how he knows that some fans were disappointed that there wasn't more, but from his perspective, it was a miracle that they got what they got.
I also heard from those same early sources that Jensen had the freedom to go as far with the scene as he wanted to. If Jensen had wanted to say "me too", then he could have said it. He never said it. I was extremely curious to see that scene, after reading that script, because I knew Jensen had the freedom to do with it as he wanted.

supernatural s9e19 alex annie alexis ann (w. robert berens)
i need a never-skip-recap button for spn on netflix, i need all the help i can get to remember wtf is going on. jody and vampires, let's get it
The episode title is a play on the title of the 2011 psychological thriller Martha Marcy May Marlene.
and you know who's in that? our hugh dancy (from hannibal)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
little cillian murphy vibes
Tumblr media
okay, adorable haircut
Tumblr media
JODY Eh, only aches when it rains. How you boys been? DEAN Peachy. SAM Touch and go.
lol sam's face. skrunkly
i am ... vaguely distressed for this actress that had to have jared padalecki aggressively swabbing her gums. awkward
DEAN So she's a blood slave. We've seen it before – vampires keeping people as pets, human feedbags. Sometimes these slaves... SAM Stay loyal to their captors.
this episode is uh. it's got a lot of kinky subtext potential
so is bloodbag girl gonna come to understand how her parents must have felt when she got taken from jody's son dying? and/or is jody just gonna adopt her?
also when are we circling back to the sam "only child" winchester brother angst? aside from skrunkle faces we've been pretty much acting normal
sure dean would be happy to go do some morally just slicing and dicing rampage
this reminds me of that hannibal episode with molly shannon collecting a family of kids and having them murder their actual families
Tumblr media
hannibal s1e4 oeuf
DEAN Okay, that "girl" can't be trusted. She's a lure. She's a-a honey trap. She's been feeding people to those vamps! JODY I don't care. Whatever she did, she did because they made her.
speaking of hannibal, jody said abigail rights
DEAN And how do you even know she wants to be saved? For the past eight years, she has been baiting the hook for an entire nest. She's got more blood on her hands than most monsters we kill. JODY Are you saying she's on your list?
jody could use a little heads up about dean being extra murdery due to the mark
Tumblr media
love this vampire lady's hair. red and curly and wild
sam's empathy is getting a workout lately. all these soft understanding looks he's trading with jody (and everyone) when dean's all bloodthirsty
Tumblr media
shades of the benders. cool and nice cop lady, fucked up murdering family that eats people with a daughter for a lure, a winchester bound to a chair while the other is threatened
Tumblr media
s1e15 the benders
SAM Nice work back there. "Look at me, bitch"? DEAN Well, hey, you got another snappy one-liner, I'm all ears. SAM What I'm saying is – it looked to me like you were enjoying it. Maybe too much. DEAN And? Well, sorry for not putting on a hair shirt. Killing things that need killing is kind of our job. Last I checked, taking pleasure in that is not a crime.
A hair shirt, also known as a cilice, is a garment made of coarse cloth or animal hair and typically worn in religious circles to cause pain and discomfort for the purposes of repentance and atonement.
are we expected to know what this is?
why are all these plotlines such slow burns. do they still not know the mark makes him extra murdery??? TOO MUCH SHIT IS GOING ON
so far moc!dean seems kind of like fresh out of purgatory dean
editing to add that they did squeeze in a little brother angst with that brief
DEAN Yeah, I know. You wouldn't have done the same for me.

everyone: *talking about how Cas' confession demands to be addressed in any Supernatural followup* *still phrasing it like it's an obstacle or accident they didn't think through and not the emotional climax the whole season was building to and the whole text supports, like the trap it laid on the network to demand acknowledgment in this way somehow wasn't always the plan*

Watching all of this pan out makes me think what it must have been like when Chuck/CW gods were still handling the steering wheel?
I can't even imagine what Bobo-Misha combo had to go through. Jensen is taking the narrative into hands but before that Bobos had to go through hell to get the green light for that confession.
This is why I've been so goddamn furious with every lane in this fandom. Just as much as the antis shredding the content, supposed shippers or lgbtq supporters viciously rended bobo and others (there's other queer writers including closeted ones, no further clarification on when where who or what era) as 'queerbait' for simply fighting for exactly what we all wanted.
they fell for vinnie's dogwhistles to tear apart wayward, they missed bobo pulling fandom pants down with Dreamhunter to reveal the fandom's anti mlm bias even among supporters by matching his own identical content, compacted, and letting people scream Canon.
And he never gave up. Even when crushed and sending out apologies for failing us with Wayward, even when the dreams of hundreds of fans that fought for years fell into rubble when it had been a perfect standing statue on air--even when his contract lapsed. He stayed for one goddamn thing. He knew, he said, he couldn't walk away with how deeply it mattered to so many people, and it was his first thought designing the season at all.
And looking at who's involved and what's happening now. Even if you don't believe me about the origins or whatever, If anyone thinks he's not at least consulting you're out of your goddamn minds.

"Then it all got scrapped apparently because of the shake up behind the scenes"/ I hadn't heard this before. What was going on behind the scenes?
So I'm not sure of the exact details and maybe somebody else can jump in about it. But my understanding was that Jeremy Carver was leaving for another show before season 11 was over with so Andrew Dabb came on at the end. I seem to recall Jensen saying something at a con about all of them sort of collaborating or something to that effect on the last few episodes because of the shake up.
Here’s a quote from Alice Jester’s review of “Alpha and Omega” on the Winchester Family Business:
Wasted Opportunities. That’s my two word review for season 11.  It’s hard not to be bitter.  I understand that the circumstances behind the scenes weren’t good this year.  The Darkness was Jeremy Carver’s idea and then he bailed for “Frequency” before the season was finished.  At some point Andrew Dabb and his writing team realized they had something way too ambitious and not grounded in reality.  At what point that is I don’t know, but Robbie Thompson certainly gave us his all in “Don’t Call Me Shurley” before he left too.  It’s almost like he was trying to prove to the other writers that this plot could be done.  It looks like though the final four holding the bag, Brad Buckner, Eugenie Ross-Leming, Robert Berens, and Andrew Dabb, decided the best way out was to cut their losses and start over.
Sure, God and Amara settling their differences and smoking away together sounds logical, but for the loyal viewer who has been heavily invested in this show for a number of years, this hurts.  Why didn’t they run further with all those little nuggets that were introduced throughout the season?  What happened to The Hand of God, Billie the Reaper and her talk of the Empty, the whole theme of purification and redemption, Sam’s visions and rekindled faith, Dean and Amara destined to be bonded forever, the whole season of the train whistles in the background, bringing back Lucifer and Metatron for their shot at redemption and…wait for it…THE RETURN OF THE AMULET.  Something of such deep meaning to the fans and the remaining writers decided to trash it, again.  They didn’t even acknowledge that it  ever happened.  For shame writers, for shame.

supernatural s11e14 the vessel (w. robert berens)
don't judge, nic. (generally historical fiction is not my jam. the sigh i sighed when the title screen with nazi-occupied france came up... also why i immediately get tired over old timey men of letters stuff)
hold the phone, i know that music intro! it's non, je ne regrette rien by edith piaf - which was used to wonderful effect in inception. spent far, far too long trying to find a clip of it, everything is garbage quality and it's not streaming anywhere i can get it easily
well, i am definitely on board with stabbing nazis, with impunity. (and gee, men of letters related, color me surprised :p)
haha ok but wait
SAM 'Cause I found something. I mean, we need something. Magic. A weapon strong enough to give us a shot against Amara. So, I've been looking outside the lore in history. And I found this, the Vichy Memorandems. They were Nazi communications that puzzle historians to this day. And they speak of a super weapon obtained by the Ahnenerbe, said to be strong enough to win the war.
reminds me of the magicians rhinemann ultra
the magicians s2e2 hotel spa potions
I mean, it was amazing reading about how you used the Rhinemann at Gettysburg to help win the war for the Union. And it was you who slipped it to Rupert Chatwin for the Battle of the Bulge. I mean, you changed history.
the magicians s2e3 divine elimination
The spell that won World War II is called the Rhinemann Ultra? Sounds like a not-so-great beer.
and someone had to power-up with god .... juice (semen) to be able to cast it. anyway. god this is going to take forever.
SAM Well, these memos refer to it as "The Hand of God." I mean, that was sort of a catch all term for several objects he touched on Earth in Biblical times. But they're believed to contain traces of His power. DEAN Yeah, well the Nazis believed a lot of things. SAM Dean, Lucifer's caged. God's MIA, the only beings strong enough to battle Amara are gone. If we're gonna fight her, what better way to arm up than with an actual dose of His power?
just sayin. familiar!
so dean i got a pro-tip here for you. have more than one source of caffeine on-hand at all times. that way even if you're out of power or machine breaks or no grounds or whatever, you can have coffee. personal fan of starbucks doubleshot cans. and it reminded me of the self-heating coffee cans in the neuromancer universe way back when they first came out and i've been drinking them for my first coffee of the day since :p (william gibson writes about coffee a lot.)
Tumblr media
answers the incapacitated crowley question i had
Tumblr media
distressing. i generally like crowley, even if i don't like what he's getting up to. and having him in this forced pet play torture thing is pushing some really upsetting and unpleasant buttons for me. at least they let us know he's still in there fighting i guess sooner rather than later
DEAN Just in case things go sideways, somebody needs to be left standing to take care of the Darkness. We can't risk us both! And at the moment, I'm the least valuable player! You both know that I can't kill Amara, so the least I could do is get the thing that we need so that you can! SAM So you expect me to sit here and ride pine while you can Cas go play Jules Verne? DEAN Yes! No. I - who?
so he just used a 20,000 leagues under the sea reference but doesn't know who jules verne is? sure, jan. anyway. sure, yes, get dean and lucifer!cas alone on a sub together, sounds great. handwave away sam's confusion about logistics of time travel without wings
SAM (Resigned) Be safe. DEAN When am I not?
ha ha.
Tumblr media
oh, sam, i feel you.
LUCIFER Right. We'll double down on what screwed us the first time. You're really bringing your A ideas today. I can't believe I lost it. (sighs) Him. Can't believe I lost Dean.
and now dean is alone there, great. trying to figure out what submarine movie this is reminding me of but all i can figure i've seen enough is the hunt for red october (which is cold war) mashed with some vague memory of enigma machine on a sub thing - maybe from cryptonomicon? (book by neal stephenson which was kind of a mashup of current and historical fiction)
jackles is doing a good job with this and the production quality is nice but i'm emotionally detached and just want it to be over with. lucifer isn't even half assing his castiel cosplay but i guess sam is too distracted with imminent death for dean if they don't fix the problem
SAM Wait a second. I remember Bobby told me when you needed strength to retrieve us from the past, you used him to power up, you touched his soul, right?
LUCIFER That's right, I did that. But that procedure can be fatal. SAM Use my soul. That way maybe you'll have enough power to wield the spell. LUCIFER That isn't necessary. SAM It's worth the risk. Cas, Dean needs our help. I trust you.
ugh. the unknowingly begging for torture from the thing that tortured you for (an unknown but presumably) very long time, yeah. turns my stomach. is this over yet. at least the cat is out of the bag right after.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
DEAN So. Cas. SAM Yeah. What do we do? DEAN What else? We hunt Lucifer, trap the bastard, and save Cas. SAM Like I said. Lucifer may be in control now, but Cas may not come back willingly. I mean he chose it. DEAN No. No, not possible.
guess we're not mad about him saying yes to lucifer? all righty.
Tumblr media
getting in a lingering beauty shot

Rowena: "Anger!" *when talking about the spirits amassing out of Hell*

I've said it before and I'll say it again. 15x03 was mean to be Act 1 of a 3-act arc for Dean.
Berens knew what he was doing.
