Leo sat across the table, his finger tapping against the hard surface anxiously as his legs bounced. His heart pounded in his ears and he couldn’t breathe, not correctly while Nico and Piper stared at him with narrowed, analyzing eyes.
“Leo,” Piper called and reached for Leo’s hand, enveloping his with her own. Startled brown irises snapped to hers. “What’s wrong? You’re shaking like an engine right now.”
A broken and forced chuckle broke through Leo’s lips, “Sorry, I’m, uh, I don’t know what’s going on with me.”
Nico raised his coffee towards his lips, muttering around the rim before he took a long sip, “Could it have something to do with a certain son of Jupiter?”
Leo swallowed thickly. His lips parted to say something, anything, but he found no words. He was never this nervous before but he had came close to it. Being put on the spot with nothing coming to mind to direct the attention, to pass it off as a joke— he struggled speaking for the first time.
“I think you should tell him,” Piper said, leaning back in her seat and glanced at Nico who set his cup down. Neither of them uttered another word.
The fallen silence choked Leo mercilessly, his ears rang faintly and his cheeks burned hotter than the fire he conjured and created. He was hearing them but it wasn’t sticking. So much was at stake. So much.
“I—“ Leo started and quickly licked his dry lips as his eyes trailed off to the side, finding a familiar head of blond hair that was thrown back with laughter that rumbled like thunder. “I’m scared to.”

I once said this on Twitter and got a LOT of backlash for it, but I think it's worth saying. Piper McLean is not hyper-femme. She's not even femme. Piper McLean is a butch sapphic woman. Though there's no problem with portraying her in pink or doing "girly" things every once in a while, if everyone is doing it all of the time, it creates a fandom misinterpretation of the character. It erases her identity as butch. Yes, she improved her internalized misogyny. No, that does not mean that she has become femme or "feminine." Part of feminism and eliminating internalized misogyny is the realization that women have the choice of how they want to present. Piper presents in a more androgynous/masc way. That's how she is, and I don't think all fanart of her should misrepresent her in such a way.

It’s not even all that ironic. Of course he would be the fastest of all, race to be the first. Of course he was the first. His father raised him for this, set him up for this fate from the very beginning.
It happened so fast. One moment, Jo and Lightning were racing through the soft rain to find McLean, searching through tools and bits, and the next they were fleeing from strangers in protective gear.
It was only when Jo turned to gloat that she realised that he was not there.
He’s been taking out the unfairness on us all, but he doesn’t even hate us, not like he’s built up a hate for you in particular. I don’t want to imagine what he’d do to someone he truly hates. He’s been awake at night, twisting and turning what happened. Why did you get to leave, when he’s clearly the best!? Was he not the most worthy? He was the son of the best! So why was he beaten?
In hindsight, he most certainly must have flown far too close to the sun, drunk on hubris.
In that regard, he is a lot like you, Dakota.
When you set foot on the sand of the island, it is warm and still. It’s the kind of summer one dreams of in Canada. You ignore the air’s sickly stickiness, and brush off the viscous sunlight. You don’t take heed of the scorched tree clearing.
As you wander through the woods, you don’t feel the rays of light cling to your skin, or how the air is completely still, creating an illusion of idyll.
You only take note of it when it’s gone, and there comes soft rain.
You turn to look up. You’re very certain the sky wasn’t this tight before. But there’s no time to just stand and talk about the weather, you decide. As though your life doesn’t hinge on the whims of nature now.
The rain quickly intensifies, and the cold of it is as merciless to your skin as the sun is to his own. A wind sends chills down your spine, and you have no jacket. If you look up again, you’ll see that the sky is closing in, and doing so quickly. You hear massive booming, but no lightning crackles. Still, it never recedes.
You’ll see him in your peripheral vision. Hair a stark white, his skin littered with a fractal pattern, which broadcasts him so clearly, but wearing clothes robbed of all hint of individuality.
He gently brushes his fingers against the trunk of a tree, and to your horror, a lichtenberg figure burns right into the wood. He is the storm now.
You take shelter, and the metal handle seems to ward him off. Doesn’t stop him patrolling longer than what is worth counting. Then, you hear a shot, and the storm stops. But he’ll be back.
He can do this routine over and over again. It’s not even that hard for him to break out of containment.
So go ahead and enlighten him; if you had to choose between you and him, who’s the one more deserving of going back home this time?
You don’t get to pick “both”.

The BBC has acquired new Australian crime drama Scrublands, based on the award-winning novel written by Chris Hammer, for BBC Four and BBC iPlayer.
The four-part series from Australian production company Easy Tiger (Colin from Accounts, The Twelve) stars Luke Arnold (Black Sails, Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story of INXS), Jay Ryan (It Chapter Two, Top of the Lake) and Bella Heathcote (CAUGH*T, Relic).
Scrublands is set in an isolated country town, where a charismatic and dedicated young priest (Jay Ryan) calmly opens fire on his congregation, killing five parishioners. One year later investigative journalist Martin Scarsden (Luke Arnold) arrives in Riversend to write what should be a simple feature story on the anniversary of the tragedy. But when Martin's instincts kick in and he digs beneath the surface, the previously accepted narrative begins to fall apart and he finds himself in a life and death race to uncover the truth.
The cast also includes Robert Taylor (The Newsreader), Adam Zwar (Squinters), Zane Ciarma (Neighbours), Victoria Thaine (Nowhere Boys), Stacy Clausen (True Spirit), Genevieve Morris (No Activity) and newcomer Ella Ferris.

Scrublands (4 x 50) was acquired by the BBC from Abacus Media Rights who have international distribution rights for the series. It was produced by Easy Tiger for Stan Australia and the Nine Network. Produced by Ian Collie, Rob Gibson, David Redman and Felicity Packard, the series is directed by Greg McLean and written by Felicity Packard, Kelsey Munro and Jock Serong.
