Ferus Olin and Roan Lands oh, and BD-1 of course.

It seems I settled on a format for character portraits. Yay! Keep your fingers crossed so, I will not change that. The theme is still similar to the previous idea since I designed those halos for a reason and I simply love them and intend to use them :)

For some reason, my brain started with those two but tbh I had fun designing and drawing them.

When Subtext Is Text, Musings On Ferus Olin

It's the end of Pride month, and Legends Con Executive Director Katherine is taking the opportunity to talk about one of her favorite characters (and most recent cosplays), Ferus Olin. Ferus is one of the canonically queer characters in the Star Wars Legends timeline; and is, in her humble opinion, one of the most interesting representations of a queer character within the Star Wars universe.

Ferus comes from the Jude Watson books, first appearing in her Jedi Quest series and later leading the series Last of the Jedi. He also appeared in the Rebel Force series as a supporting character. All three of these series are Scholastic chapter books, published between the years of 2001 and 2010. They are progressive for their time in many ways, but are ultimately also a product of their time in how Ferus as a queer character is defined on the page. The line between subtext and text can be debated, but we have author confirmation via Twitter that Ferus is gay and married to Roan Lands. Roan was referred to as Ferus's "partner" throughout the Last of the Jedi and Rebel Force series. With these books being written throughout the 2000s, that was the current terminology used for gay couples at the time- and marriage was not even a legal option within the United States.  

The term partner is really only the beginning of the signs we see in-text that Ferus and Roan are a couple. The most interesting of those to me is this passage from the first book in the Last of the Jedi series. Obi-Wan has just rescued Roan from Imperial prison after both Ferus and Roan were arrested for leading rebel activities and separated within the prison. As part of the misadventures that occurred with Obi-Wan and Ferus after that, they are forced to temporarily leave behind the planet Bellassa where Ferus had been living with Roan. While in space Ferus and Obi-Wan talk about how Ferus resigned from the Jedi Order (that’s another story entirely, I don’t want to get too off track here)

“It doesn’t matter,” Ferus said. “I walked away. It was the most difficult thing I ever had to do, but in a way I’m glad it happened.”

“You’re still a Jedi, Ferus.”

“No,” Ferus said slowly. “I’m not. I can never really be a Jedi again. Not just because I left the Order.” He looked back in the direction of Bellassa. “I have attachments.”

“Once there was something I wanted, something forbidden by the Jedi code,” Obi-Wan said. “Qui-Gon said something to me then. He said, maybe in a different galaxy things will change. The Jedi will change. Here is the change Ferus. And I think… in the new order, attachments will be a strength. Maybe this is how the galaxy will be saved. So yes, you are still a Jedi.”

Obi-Wan is referring to events of the Jedi Apprentice books, also by Jude Watson, where he entered a brief romance with one of his fellow Padawans, Siri Tachi. Obi-Wan and Siri decided to end their relationship due to the Jedi code, which led to that conversation with Qui-Gon. In the text this is Ferus saying that his relationship with Roan is outside the bounds of the Jedi code, and Obi-Wan draws a parallel to a romantic relationship of his own. I personally would call this plain text rather than subtext based on both the context in-universe and the context that this was written in 2005.

Throughout the story there are more signs that while subtle, Ferus and Roan’s relationship is romantic. It's the way they tease each other, care for each other, and little snippets about their life together-

Roan Lands, inventor of the landspeeder

Roan Lands lived on Bellassa, where he met the former Jedi Ferrus Olin shortly before the start of the Clone Wars. He sold all of his possessions to start a business with him- Olin and Lands, which would help people hurt by corrupt businesses start new lives. With the rise of the Empire, this became the rebel cell The Eleven. The Empire quickly destroyed the Eleven, with Roan getting captured. He was rescued by Obi-Wan Kenobi, who he gave clues to finding Ferrus. He eventually reunited with his Ferrus and his new rebel cell. This cell was destroyed by Darth Vader, who killed Roan to provoke Ferrus.

Roan is from Jude Watson’s 2005-2008 junior novel series Last of the Jedi. Watson has clarified that her intention was to write Roan and Ferrus as a married couple, making them one of the earliest queer characters in Star Wars.

(Apologies for any errors in the summary, this is one of the few characters in this poll I have no personal experience with.)

Madrid Vasur| Identity: mlm | Media: Legacy of the Force

Madrid Vasur was a Mandalorian blacksmith and husband of Mandalorian Protector and mercenary Goran Beviin during the time of the Yuuzhan Vong War. When his husband did Mandalorian things off planet, like fight both with and against the Yuuzhan Vong, he remained on planet. Together they adopted the war orphan and Mandalorian supercommando Dinue Jeban.

Madrid Vasur was created by the infamous Karen Traviss. He was described as Goran Beviin’s partner in the 2008 novel Legacy of the Force: Revelations. She clarified that she intended them to be married, and they were described as such in The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia (December 2008). Yes, Karen Traviss of all people is responsible for one of the first gay star wars characters.

Ferus would doubt what he’s seeing, but the troopers were loud, conversing with one another and—different. They were all different in the Force, just like their painted armor, their designs distinct and so, so very different from each other that Ferus can’t bring himself to look away.

It’s because of that that he almost doesn’t notice a trooper looking directly at him, the helmet tilting dangerously as they honed in on him. The black and red armor with its cloak billowing from behind draws a cutting figure amidst the sea of colors, standing out as he stands still, tensing when Ferus looks his way. Ferus feels the rising beat of his heart, just as he meets his gaze, and he runs.

He runs and doesn’t look back, because he didn’t need to, the sharp attention and vicious intent piercing through his senses in the Force as he took a sharp left, almost crashing into the wall.

When Ferus looks ahead, he sees a dead end, making him stumble at the sheer panic thrilling through him. He knows that he shouldn’t, but—the trooper is hot on his tail, and Ferus can’t bear to be caught now, not when he’s just started rallying the people of Bellassa to fight as a united front against the Empire.

Not when he’s still fighting for what’s left of the Jedi, where they’re hidden and scattered across the galaxy, but still fighting just as he is.

He plants his feet on the ground, and with the Force, he leaps high. Flipping and landing on one of the roofs, and he stumbles a little when his feet hit solid ground, but Ferus doesn’t stop, doesn’t look back as he keeps running.
