I have three favourite ships in the asoiaf world:

1_Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen

2_Rhaenyra Targaryen and Daemon Targaryen

3_Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen

My least favourite ship is Jonsa. Normally I don't care about crackships, but their stans take it too far.

Daenerys Targaryen is my queen, she is mother, she is our lady and saviour who will deliver us from the darkness.

Honestly I think is Sansa, I didn't care for her while reading the books or even watching the show, but her stans made me hate her.

Rhaenyra deserved better.

Rhaenys Targaryen (Daughter of Rhaegar)

In the tumultuous world of Westeros, Rhaenys Targaryen was born as the daughter of Prince Rhaegar Targaryen and Princess Elia Martell, carrying the blood of both fire and ice within her veins. She was born with a spirit as fierce as her mother's Martell heritage and a deep sense of honor from her father's Targaryen lineage.

As a young girl, Rhaenys led a sheltered life within the Red Keep, surrounded by the love of her parents and her baby brother Aegon. Despite the turbulence that plagued her family's legacy, Rhaenys remained a bright and hopeful child, with dreams of peace and unity in the realm.

However, Rhaenys' idyllic childhood was shattered when the realm was torn apart by the rebellion of Robert Baratheon. In the Sack of King's Landing, her beloved father was killed on the Trident, and her mother and brother were brutally murdered by Ser Gregor Clegane, leaving Rhaenys as the sole surviving member of her immediate family.

In a twist of fate, a loyal servant of House Targaryen managed to smuggle young Rhaenys out of the city during the chaos of the sack. Under the guise of a commoner, Rhaenys was hidden away in a small village far from the reach of the Lannisters and their allies. For years, she lived in obscurity, her Targaryen identity carefully concealed to ensure her safety.

But as she grew into her teenage years, a burning desire for vengeance consumed Rhaenys. She could not forget the atrocities committed against her family, nor the names of those responsible. Fuelled by anger and grief, she vowed to avenge her loved ones and reclaim her birthright as a Targaryen princess.

Under the alias of Nyssa, she honed her combat skills in secret, training with various swordsmen and learning the arts of deception and survival. She also began gathering loyal supporters who believed in the return of House Targaryen. With her fiery determination and charismatic leadership, Nyssa garnered a small but devoted band of followers.

As Nyssa, she traveled throughout the Seven Kingdoms, gathering intelligence about Robert Baratheon and Gregor Clegane. She learned about their weaknesses and the people who could be swayed to support her cause. Rhaenys was no longer the innocent child she once was; she had transformed into a determined and strategic young woman, ready to exact her revenge.

As Rhaenys Targaryen set out on her quest for vengeance and reclaiming her family's honor, rumors began to circulate about a boy known as Young Griff, who claimed to be Aegon Targaryen, her long-lost brother and the true heir to the Iron Throne. Rhaenys heard these whispers with a mix of surprise and suspicion. For years, she had believed her baby brother to have been murdered as an infant, and now, this supposed pretender threatened her claim to the throne.

Furious at the audacity of Young Griff's claim, Rhaenys refused to believe that he could be her brother. She was certain that her family's enemies were using this deception to sow discord and further destabilize the realm. In her eyes, the Iron Throne was hers and hers alone by right of birth, and she would not let any impostor take that from her.

Determined to uncover the truth, Rhaenys set out to investigate Young Griff's claim. She delved into the history and the lineage of House Targaryen, seeking any evidence that could prove or disprove the boy's identity. Along her journey, she encountered various allies and foes, each with their own agendas and motives.

As she traveled, Rhaenys became increasingly convinced that Young Griff was an imposter. She dismissed any evidence presented in support of his claim, attributing it to mere fabrications and propaganda. Her grief over the loss of her family, the betrayal she had faced, and the longing for her rightful place on the throne fueled her determination to expose Young Griff as a fraud.

Rhaenys's path eventually led her to a confrontation with Young Griff and his supporters. She challenged him to prove his true identity, but the boy's unwavering conviction in his Targaryen heritage only further fueled her skepticism. The encounter only served to deepen the rift between them, as each clung to their claim with unyielding determination.

As the realm remained divided, with factions supporting both Rhaenys and Young Griff, tensions escalated, leading to political intrigue and even armed conflict. Rhaenys found herself entangled in a complex web of alliances, betrayals, and shifting loyalties, as various factions sought to claim the throne for their chosen claimant.

Throughout the turmoil, Rhaenys remained resolute in her belief that she was the true and rightful heir to the Iron Throne. She was willing to do whatever it took to secure her place on the throne, even if it meant facing her brother's supposed claim head-on. Her journey for vengeance had transformed into a fight for her family's legacy and her birthright.

As the realm teetered on the edge of chaos and war, Rhaenys Targaryen stood tall, determined to take her rightful place as the ruler of the Seven Kingdoms. The fires of her ancestors burned within her, driving her forward in her quest for power and justice. The struggle for the Iron Throne was far from over, and Rhaenys knew she had to be prepared to face any challenge that stood in her way.

Thoughts on the Elia and Rhaegar conflict? If Rhaegar really was obsessed with a prophecy and was fated to fall in love with Lyanna etc. where does that leave elia? I understand Elias story is supposed to show us that innocents die in war but regardless what was Rhaegar planning for his other 2 children? Any ideas? I will never get over their unnecessarily brutal deaths. It was almost written to be cruel for just the sake of being cruel

Hi anon! Oh, I have many thoughts. But first - I have a question for you! What makes you so certain there was a conflict between Rhaegar and Elia at all?

A few months ago I wrote a very hefty meta defending Rhaegar’s honor. I cover the Elia issue very extensively, as well as what the quotes/thoughts about his character tell us about who he was.

That said, I believe Rhaegar loved Elia and his children deeply and that never changed.

Now, about that ‘conflict’:

Rhaegar’s children are named Rhaenys and Aegon (and unfortunately, Aegon lol).

Kind of makes your mind wander to Aegon the Conqueror and his sister-wife, Rhaenys, right? Rhaegar was the one insisting the dragon must have three heads, so many think that his original plan was a second girl, Visenya.

Either way? We’re being nudged to think about Aegon and his wives when we think about Rhaegar.

Pairing that polyamorous relationship with the fact that GRRM chose to make polyamory a Dornish trait? I believe Rhaegar needed a polyamorous wife, narratively, and so Dorne was built around Elia Martell - her culture given a trait that GRRM would like us to extrapolate as Elia possessing, as well.

And Elia, Rhaegar’s dutiful wife, who, according to Dany’s vision, was in on the prophecies and who couldn’t bear any more children… most likely encouraged Rhaegar to take his second, fated wife.

Because the consensus about the show’s depiction of Dorne is that the writers ‘butchered’ it, I think Elia Martell is just another casualty of that.

While Rhaegar crowning Lyanna queen of love and beauty is known as the moment all the smiles died - it’s emphasized that “Elia’s reaction to the event remains unknown” …Well isn’t that convenient?

Also convenient is that Rhaegar takes Lyanna to an obscure tower in Dorne. Why Dorne, of all places?

Further, let’s take a look at House Martell. Oberyn, the one who has a vendetta against Elia’s murderers - signs betrothal pacts between his niece and nephew and the two remaining Targaryens, even planning to raise an army for Viserys.

Yet, who is it that Oberyn actually wants to kill to avenge his sister? Her actual murderers: Tywin Lannister, Gregor Clegane, Armory Lorch.

Let’s take a look at what one of the people who was actually at King’s Landing during the Sack had to say about it. Jaime Lannister.

Rhaegar comes to Jaime in a dream. And Jaime blames himself.

“I left my wife and children in your hands.”“I never thought he’d hurt them. I was with the king…”

Jaime Lannister, Tywin’s own son, did not think his father would hurt Elia or her children. So then, why or how should Rhaegar have known?

“Rhaegar met Robert on the Trident, and you know what happened there. When the word reached court, Aerys packed the queen off to Dragonstone with Prince Viserys. Princess Elia would have gone as well, but he forbade it. Somehow he had gotten it in his head that Prince Lewyn must have betrayed Rhaegar on the Trident, but he thought he could keep Dorne loyal so long as he kept Elia and Aegon by his side.”

Rhaegar had already died before Elia’s murder. She was supposed to go to Dragonstone for safety, but Aerys forbade it.

For all of Rhaegar’s life, Tywin was loyal to House Targaryen. There are even clues in the books that he was likely helping Rhaegar with a plan to overthrow the Mad King.

Tywin, himself, did not even pick a side in the Rebellion until he knew who the winner was. From the wiki:

“When Robert’s Rebellion began, Lord Tywin sat at Casterly Rock and waited, ignoring King Aerys’s orders to arm, taking no side until after Robert Baratheon’s decisive victory at the Battle of the Trident.”

And to prove his loyalty to Robert Baratheon after a lifetime of loyalty to the Targaryens, Tywin ordered the deaths of Elia and her children.

“Gregor Clegane and Amory Lorch, knights sworn to Tywin and under Tywin’s orders, slew Rhaegar’s wife Elia of Dorne and her two young children, Rhaenys and Aegon.”

Tywin was the one who presented the bodies to Robert.

Someone, please explain to me how Rhaegar had anything to do with this.

No, he wasn’t there to protect them. But he was fucking dead. And even had he, alone, returned to King’s Landing, he wouldn’t have been able to protect them.

The thing I wish I had included in my other Rhaegar meta is that while so many also assume he didn’t love his children with Elia… One of the few things we know about Rhaenys is that she hid underneath her father’s bed during the Sack of King’s Landing. If her father was so careless or cruel, why would she go to his bed to hide and feel safe? (aaaand I’m crying)

I gotta tell you, I’m not one of those people who thinks that violence or rape is unnecessary in storytelling. I think these are very real things and that the things found in ASOIAF reflect our own history here on Earth, reflect our own human nature. The mind is very curious about morbid topics, and fiction is one way to explore that in a safe way. It might even help shape our empathy to do so.

Yes, we’re supposed to be absolutely disturbed by it. But this is absolutely how our history was, and it shows the realism, ruthlessness, and evils of not only war, but of power.

Robert Baratheon was a good man once upon a time, but the Rebellion stripped him of his humanity and turned him into a shell of a man.

It’s a horribly tragic, cautionary tale. Upon learning how horrible the Sack of King’s Landing was, we should stop rooting for anyone to sit on that throne. It corrupts. This is why I don’t personally want Jon or Dany on that throne - though luckily, they’re already disillusioned with rule. I’d rather the damned monstrosity just be destroyed.

The Starklings idolize, draw strength from Robb and want to be like him, the same way Dany is with Rhaegar. And guess what the fandom does? Take the Starklings idolization of Robb as a good inspirational thing, and Dany’s idolization of Rhaegar as a bad thing. Sure, there are a few metas here and there about the costs of the War of the Five Kings and Robb’s role in the horrors that happened, but people never really demonize him. People might recognize that his war is bad for the smallfolk, and even recognize that his motivations for war are personal revenge for his father, but people will still sympathize with him and recognize his good intentions. Meanwhile, Rhaegar is completely demonized. Everything positive that is said about him is dismissed as “unreliable narration” (because apparently there’s not even a drop of truth to literally everyone singing praises to Rhaegar). Rhaegar’s personal motivation for running away with Lyanna, his love for her, are seen as something that makes him a monster, or even distorted to seem that he never loved her at all (he freaking died saying her name, ffs), while the fandom doesn’t do the same with Robb’s personal motivations for war (his love for his father). And Rhaegar didn’t even start a war like Robb. Sure, he made something really reckless in running away with Lyanna, but starting a war was not his intention, meanwhile Robb did start a war.

And I can’t help but think this is very connected to Dany hate. Robb is not demonized because he is a Stark and connected to the Starklings, Rhaegar is demonized because Dany MUST be wrong about her brother, she MUST be wrong about looking up to him and this MUST be seen as a character flaw for her. Dany MUST NOT have any rights to the throne. The Rebellion must be 100% right in everything, they must be perfectly justified, to justify the idea that Dany is wrong in wanting the throne back. So Rhaegar and his actions during the Rebellion must be seen in the worst light possible.

I truly don’t care about Rhaegar as a character. He is too much of a minor character for me to feel anything about him. But the Rhaegar hate does bother me, because to me it’s very clear that Rhaegar hate (as well as Targaryen hate) is connected to Dany hate. Sure, not everyone who hates Rhaegar hates Dany, but it seems to me that Rhaegar hate only really got as popular as it is because the fandom in general has an anti Targaryen sentiment (and this anti Targaryen sentiment comes from anti Dany sentiment). Even people who might not hate Dany are still influenced by fandom climate, so to me it does seem like there’s a clear connection. Because it’s always everything that is connected to Dany in a positive way that ends up being demonized.
