Growing and Gardening Tip: Marigolds

Marigolds are, I find, a beautiful tiny crown on a Summer garden. They bloom in gorgeous warm hues of yellow, orange and crimson, they’re edible and garnish a salad or a cake with their suave saffron-y taste, and they repel aphids and other undesirable insects, like bean beetles, when grown in your Kitchen Garden. They also are an excellent companion to most plants, especially potatoes and beetroots!

So I sowed marigold (Tagetes patula nana ‘Bolero’) seeds in late February (on the 27th), a couple of seeds in each cup of an egg box in a mixture of good soil and compost. As always, I dusted the sows with coal to prevent damping off, and watered regularly. They need not be soaked but the soil must always be moist and should not get too dry. I kept them inside, by the window, in my ‘Nursery’.

On the 8th of March, they were already sprouting!

Once the seedlings were about 5 centimetres/2 inches high. I gently transferred them to larger pots, repotting three to four seedlings in a pot with a 10-centimetre/4-inch diametre. I continued tending to them inside, giving them water and light, until they grew at least four proper leaves and a bit taller (on the 10th April).

Ten days later, on the 21st of April, I planted the tallest marigold seedlings in the cement block I had used when making the Veg Patch Extension, two seedlings per hole.

They grow quite rapidly. And as I recently planted the late bloomers...

... the first ones are flowering!
