On Ice: A Stammering Adrien AU Story

Based on this AU.

Dsclaimer: The only characters or locations I own are the ones I make up. All other fictional characters and locations about Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir are the property of Thomas Astruc. I do not intend to profit from this.

Adrien stood outside the ice rink, looking for Kagami. Her absence was making him paranoid. Was he not specific enough? Did she get the wrong address? Was she getting kidnapped or mugged? All these awful scenarios were going through his head like a bad horror movie. That’s when he felt a hand land on his shoulder, making him jump.

"Adrien, relax," said Kagami's voice. "It's just me."

Adrien's heart felt like a jackhammer as he got out a paper bag to breathe into. Kagami felt a twinge of guilt as she watched him breathe in and out. As Adrien calmed down, Kagami couldn’t help but blush

"Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you." she said

"It's... It’s okay,” said Adrien. “I'm sorry I'm such a s-s-s-scaredy cat.”

"You're no scaredy-cat. Anyway, what's up?"

Adrien sighed. "I need your help. My friend, Luka, invited m-m-m-me and Marinette to go skating with him at this ice rink today," said Adrien.

"Do you not want to go?" Kagami asked.

"No, no, I do," he said. "Especially if Marinette will be there."

"So what's the issue?" Kagami asked.

Adrien blushed and rubbed the back of his head. "The issue is... The issue is that I... I... I c-c-c... I c-c-c... I can't skate."

Kagami giggled. Adrien was so cute when he blushed. However, her giggling stopped when she saw the sad look on his face.

"I'm guessing you're worried that when you get in there, you'll try skating, fall on your butt, and your crush will think you're a doofus and never want to go out with you, right?"

Adrien whimpered. "Yes..."

Kagami took his hands. "If you're really that worried, I'll come with you, and show you some basics, okay?"

Adrien smiled and hugged Kagami tightly. Kagami couldn't help but smile at how affectionate Adrien could be. She hugged back, but eventually broke the hug and gave him a stern look.

"Okay, Agreste, now listen. If I'm doing this, you need to stick with it,” said Kagami. “No quitting. You fall down, you get back up, got it?”

Kagami’s stern voice put a fire in Adrien’s belly. He raised his fist to his chest.

"I won't quit! I’ll learn to... I’ll learn to s-s-skate no matter what!"

"That's the spirit! And while you’re at it, you can finally tell Marinette how you feel,” said Kagami.

Those words made Adrien’s determination skid to a halt as he shrank away.

“Nope! Nope, nope, nope, nope! Not there yet. D-D-D-Definitely not there yet!” he said.

Kagami's face soured. "I take it back. You are a scaredy-cat."

Adrien looked away while holding his left arm. Kagami's expression softened when she saw this. She took his hands and smiled.

"I'm sorry. It's okay if you're not there yet. You'll get there."

"Really?" Adrien asked.

"Eventually," said Kagami. "Now come on. Let's get inside, and see if I can teach you not to land on your pretty little face."

Adrien blushed as Kagami led him inside.

Marinette wobbled as she tried to keep her balance. Gravity had always been a thorn in her side, and this time was no exception.

"I thought you knew how to skate," said Luka, holding her hands.

"I do," said Marinette. "It's just been a while, you know?"

"A little rusty, huh?"

Marinette toppled and fell into Luka's arms. "You could say that."

Luka blushed a little. Marinette was so beautiful, from this angle or any other. And with that beauty came temptation, dangling in front of him like a forbidden fruit. He could do it. He could make his move and ask her out. It's not like Marinette was already dating Adrien... No. He couldn't. Marinette and Adrien were meant to be. Luka could feel it. No, he could hear it. For Luka, every person had a melody. Marinette's melody was sweet and uplifting, while Adrien's was sad and slow, but for whatever reason, when Adrien was around her, his melody changed, becoming calm and comforting. Their melodies synced so well, and Luka couldn't bring himself to disrupt them. Luka's mind raced with these thoughts. So much so that he zoned out.

"Luka?" Marinette asked

Luka snapped back to attention. "Huh?"

"You kind of zoned out for a bit," said Marinette. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah, yeah, I'm good. Just got a little lost in thought," said Luka. "Anyway, I'm sure you won't be the only one fumbling. Knowing Adrien, he's probably never learned how to ice skate at all."

"EEP!"

Luka recognized that "eep." It was Marinette’s "eep".of distress.

"Luka, you're right! Adrien spent most of his life at home! How on Earth would he know how to ice skate?! Oh, this is terrible! If he falls and people see him, they'll laugh at him, and he'll be so mortified that he'll never leave his house again, or maybe even leave Paris! Or if he falls and gets hurt, he could break something and never be able to model, fence, play basketball, or play the piano ever again! AND IT'LL BE ALL MY FAULT!!!"

Luka grabbed Marinette. "Breathe, Marinette! Breathe!"

Marinette took a deep breath, and a wave of relief went through her as she exhaled.

"Calm down," said Luka. "Look, I'm pretty sure Adrien won't hide away in his room, leave Paris, or whatever that last one was. He'll be embarrassed, but we'll be there to pick him up," said Luka.

Marinette took one more deep breath. "You're right. We can do this."

"And hey, maybe you can tell Adrien that you’re crushing on him."

"EEP!" Marinette's face turned tomato red. "Who told you?!"

"Chill, Marinette, chill," said Luka. "I just figured it out. It wasn't exactly rocket science."

Marinette growled. "You cannot tell him."

"I won't. I won't," said Luka. "But you should."

Before Marinette could protest, she saw Adrien approach the rink and grew excited.

"Adrien!" she said as she skated towards him.

Then, to Marinette's sudden surprise, there was a girl there with Adrien. Marinette stopped, catching herself just before she could slip.

"Bonjour," said the girl as she bowed. "You must be Marinette. Nice to finally meet you."

"Oh, um, likewise," said Marinette, bowing back.

Adrien blushed. "Marinette, this is K-K-K-Kagami. She's... She's my friend f-f-f-from fencing class."

"Oh yeah, the friend you told me about," said Marinette, looking Kagami over. "Wow, you're very pretty. I like your outfit."

"Thanks," said Kagami, blushing. "It’s my favorite one."

As they spoke, Luka came up to them.

"Hey, Adrien, you made it," he said before spotting the girl. "Kagami?"

"Oh, hey, Luka," said Kagami with a smile.

"You know him?" Adrien asked Kagami.

"You know her?" Marinette asked Luka.

"Oh, yeah. We’re classmates. Her mom doesn’t like me that much, though."

"Sorry about that," said Kagami, blushing again. "My mother's really strict."

"No big deal," said Luka. "Come on. Let's skate."

Adrien gulped. "Y-Yeah. Skating."

A good time was being had by all. Well, by most. As expected, Adrien had a rough time staying up and clung to the rail more than once. With trembling legs and tightly shut eyes, he could already feel people staring at him. That’s when he felt the gentle touch of a friend. He opened his eyes and saw Kagami smiling at him.

"You're not going to learn to skate by holding on to the rail," she said.

Adrien offered his hand, and they started moving. He couldn't help but wobble in place a few times. He felt so hopeless.

"Maybe this was a b-b-b-bad idea," said Adrien. "Maybe I should just..."

Oh, no," said Kagami, grabbing his shoulders. "You are not giving up. When you kept falling on your face at the skate park with your friends, did you give up?"

"No," said Adrien with a sigh.

"So what's so different about this?" Kagami asked. "You can do this. And just think of how proud everyone will be that you at least tried. Especially Marinette."

Those words rekindled that fire in Adrien's belly. He thought about how happy it made his friends and family when he tried new things, and how proud of himself he felt too. And then it really hit him. Marinette. Adrien could picture it now. Marinette's hand in his, the two of them skating together, maybe even on a date. Adrien shook his head as he snapped back to reality.

"I'll do it!"

"Good," said Kagami. "Now, watch my feet, and see if you can pick up on the technique. Remember, distribute your weight, and when pushing forward, the foot goes out to the side, not behind you."

Adrien watched as Kagami went forward, paying close attention to her legs and feet. She made it look simple enough, so with a deep breath, Adrien bent his knees, distributed his weight, and did his best to mimic her movements. He pushed with his left foot and slid forward. He did the same with his right foot and got the same result. Left. Right. Left. Right. Before he knew it, Adrien was gliding across the ice, finally catching up to Kagami.

"I'm doing it!" Adrien said with a grin. "I'm actually d-d-d-doing it!"

Kagami smiled. "I knew you could. Now let's work on stopping."

As Adrien listened to Kagami, suddenly, he felt someone crash into him. The next thing he knew, he and Marinette were sitting across from each other on the ice. As soon as their eyes met, both teens' faces turned bright red. The rink grew agonizingly quiet for about five seconds before erupting with the sound of two awkward teens trying, and failing, to skate away from each other. Seeing enough, Luka and Kagami intervened, with Luka picking up Marinette and Kagami picking up Adrien. The two embarrassed teens didn’t even speak. They just rushed off in opposite directions, with their friends following.

"Marinette, wait!" said Luka.

"Adrien, stop!" said Kagami.

Philippe, the owner of the ice rink, felt his heart stop. It was the news he hoped he would never hear.

"What do you mean you’re closing it down?" Philippe asked.

"I’m sorry, Philippe," said Mayor Bourgeois. "But the fact of the matter is you’re not making enough money to keep the place open."

Phillipe felt short of breath. "Mr. Mayor, please. This isn’t just my livelihood; it’s my passion. I’ve put my blood, sweat, and tears into this rink, into these lessons, into skating!"

"I know, Phillipe, but Antoine Blanchet has plans for this property, and he has more money and more lawyers than you do."

"Mr. Mayor, please. I’m begging you," said Phillipe, on his knees.

The mayor sighed. "Again, Phillipe, I’m sorry."

Phillippe watched as Mayor Bourgeois left. Sorrow gripped his heart and tears stinging his eyes. His grief blinded him to the black butterfly landing on his earring.

"Frozer."

Phillipe looked at the unknown voice. "Hm?"

"I am Hawkmoth," it said. "Your passion for the art of ice skating is in danger all because of something as petty as money. With my help, you can make all of Paris your own personal ice-rink as you take your revenge. All you must do in return is bring me the Miraculouses of Ladybug and Chat Noir. Do we have a deal?"

Phillipe stood up and gave a devious smile. "Paris will be mine."

With the deal set, Philippe turned into Frozer, the ice-themed villain ready to turn Paris into a frozen wasteland.

Meanwhile, just outside the boy’s locker room, Adrien sat on the floor with his skates off, ready to die of embarrassment.

"That was a d-d-d-disaster," he moaned. "She probably thinks I’m a clumsy d-doofus."

"I highly doubt that," said Kagami. "If anything, she’s probably just as embarrassed as you."

Adrien groaned. "That doesn’t... That doesn’t matter. I blew it. Again."

Kagami pondered. Perhaps this was her chance. Perhaps she could be Adrien’s real target, one he could actually hit. It was only fair, right? And Marinette could find another, right? Before Kagami could answer ‘yes’ to these questions, she quickly stopped herself. She longed for Adrien, but not nearly as much as she knew Adrien longed for Marinette. So as much as it destroyed her, Kagami swallowed her pain and helped Adrien back up.

"Hey, chin up, Agreste. I doubt Marinette wants her future boyfriend to be all mopey and gloomy over a little gravity. Now put your game face on. You’re going to go talk to her."

"What?" said Adrien. "B-B-But I..."

"That means now, mister," Kagami ordered.

Adrien gulped. "Y-Yes, ma’am."

"Luka, no!" Marinette begged. "Not after that!"

"It was just a little slip and fall. You guys barely brushed skin. I doubt that constitutes the end of a relationship," said Luka, pushing a fear-frozen Marinette towards the boy’s locker room.

"But what if it did?" Marinette asked. "What if Adrien thinks I actually tried to do that to him? Ugh! He’s going to hate me! and have me put in jail or something!"

"Girl, I don’t know where you get these scenarios, but you have got to CHILL! Adrien is not going to hate you because of a dumb little thing like this."

Marinette whimpered. "He is pretty sweet, sensitive, understanding, gentle, and kind."

"You really m-m-mean that?"

Marinette froze, knowing exactly who was talking. With a face akin to a tomato, she looked to see a nervous Adrien Agreste standing behind her. Marinette let out a loud "EEP!" and got ready to run, only to be halted by Luka’s hand. The irritated musician pointed towards Adrien. With a defeated sigh and weak knees, Marinette confronted her crush.

"Um," she started. "Sorry about crashing into you earlier. You know me, Marinette, the klutz."

Adrien gulped. "N-N-No, it’s okay." If anything, I sh-sh-sh-should be apologizing. Clumsy and childlike Adrien Agreste. That’s m-m-m-me.

Marinette giggled. "I h-hope you’re not too discouraged. Ice skating is fun, and I would love to do it with you again."

Adrien’s heart raced. That sounded like a date. He immediately turned to Kagami, who nodded and mouthed ‘yes’.

"I-I-I-I-I... *gulp* I would like that," said Adrien.

As the two blushing teenagers stared and smiled at each other, Luka and Kagami left the room together to give them some privacy.

"M-Marinette," said Adrien. "There’s something I wanted to... Did it get colder in here?"

"Yeah," said Marinette, feeling the chill. "A lot colder."

Suddenly, an alarm sounded on their phone. An Akuma was spotted in the area. The two teens grew determined and looked at each other.

"Go get somewhere safe," they said to each other. "What? Oh, okay," they responded.

The two teens rushed off in different directions, not realizing they would be meeting up again just moments later to stop the Akuma.

Think about the fanfic possibilities!!! Summary:

Princess Marinette had always known she would marry for duty, but she had never even heard of King Adrien until her betrothal (she would know, because she had looked up all the crown Princes within a hundred mile radius).

Nevertheless, her parents were delighted at the offer of marriage and her uncle was given the privilege of escorting her to England for her wedding and the whole thing felt wrong.

Turning Tables AU: Summary & Master List

In the future Chat Noir, Viperion, Scarabella and Carapace protect Paris while also balancing their lives outside of the masks. But if you would have asked them years ago, they wouldn’t have expected things to work out quite the way they did. The story of how they got to this point is being told in Origins. This AU is made up of fics, art, and more. The main ships are Lukadrien and Alyno. Rating T.
