I'm so emotional over this album. I can't believe it's been 18 years. It's my favourite album. The first album I ever listened to that I found to be completely perfect. It was just absolutely perfect from beginning to end. That was my first thought after listening to it. The view from the afternoon hit me straight in the face and I was instantly smiling throughout the whole thing, bawling my eyes out by a certain romance.
Most powerful, interesting and unique album. Exactly my style of music and expression, perfectly captures an attitude so pure and devil-may-care at the same time, a band who aren't trying to do anything but create music that they enjoy, so free of expectations and rule-following. It perfectly encaptures this band and the way they were then and still remain today; true to themselves, following their gut, letting their instincts and relationships with each other guide the way, not afraid to take risks, humourous, tongue in cheek, oh so clever and witty and so fucking high quality that it's almost a bit ridiculous. The melodies so catchy and poignant, such interesting rhythms and grooves and wide-eyed weariness in the best and most wonderful way imaginable. Something I've not found anywhere else.
I love this album beyond belief. It's been my favourite since the first time I heard it on the day it came out and it still remains the same to this day. I've been in love with this band for longer than I haven't, and I keep being impressed and floored over and over at the way they're able to reinvent themselves without losing touch with their roots and what makes them them. They've grown so much and created so much beautiful art and this album still remains my very favourite. It stands the test of time, it's brand new and touchingly nostalgic at the same time. It touches every single one of my heartstrings, and I couldn't possibly love it more.
Happy birthday whatever people say I am that's what I'm not, thank you for being my steady companion throughout all of these years.

ChengQing for the ask game?
Ship It
What made you ship it?
Your posts lol. No, but seriously! I watched the donghua, then I read a ton of fics ( mostly Xicheng fics lol, being jiang cheng most popular ship on ao3) and then I read the novel, so I never even thought about them as a thing. Then, jc brainrot made me install Tumblr and I saw one of your gifset! I didn't quite ship them back then, but the more I thought about it, the more I could see the appeal! So, now, is one my top three ship! Also, this art lives rent free in my head. Idk why, I just like it!
What are your favorite things about the ship?
The families feud plus the noncon of it all lol. I like how both of them are complicit in each other's loved ones deaths! Wen Qing looked the other way while the jiang were massacred, jiang cheng did the same (if not worse, if you think that he actively participated in the wen remnants killing!)
I like thinking about them struggling so much to connect, because it's my favorite kind of relationship and because I think it works quite well with them?? Out of the other characters, imo, they could understand each other as no one else!
Both are pragmatic leaders, put in dire situations from almost the first time we encounter them. Both can read a room and understand where the wind is blowing... So, I think, they will look at each other, pondering the other's choices and think... 'yeah, I'll have done that too' (thanks cql for validating me!). So, their mutual understanding, plus their compassion (wen qing) and ability to get over something for loved ones sake (jiang cheng), create an interesting dynamic!
Also. She rearranged his guts. He's her greatest creation! People thought wen qing was a crazy bitch for theorizing a golden core's transfer (while clutching in fear their stomach so hard). And she managed it! She proved them wrong!!! Wen Qing should wake up every day looking at the face of the man she reinvented. I don't make the rules.
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
Mmm, I think my unpopular (???) opinion is about how they work together. Wen Qing is kinda momming her ill softhearted brother (cql!wq more, but the novel hints at it too imo), she works for years under her megalomaniac uncle and then, girl has to take care of her family (plus an alcoholic wei wuxian). Let her rest! Let someone take care of her!!!
And tbh, jiang cheng's problem isn't that he has too much responsibility (like, yeah, it's a problem lol. But imo, taking care of his sect it's jiang cheng's way to show love), his problem is that no one (wei wuxian) really let him take care of them! Let him have someone to pamper with his embarrassing devotion!

do you have any tips for drawing distance models? i really like how you simplify things in your art and wanted to ask!
I think su did a great job with distance models. No need to reinvent the wheel.
Tumblr media
Really hard to verbalize what "simplify" means. It's easier for me to do on-the-fly because I Already know the relationship between shapes in my characters.
If you're not really that kind of character designer, try drawing the design from memory after not touching it for a while. Or ask someone else to draw them from memory. Try drawing the character with a 30 second time limit or explaining what the character looks like to someone else or doing pixel art of the character. See what gets kept and what gets left out or forgotten. This can inform you of what parts of a character's design really define them vs just accentuating them.
It's good to explore why they define that character too, what the function of that piece is. Like, noses. They're not usually drawn in distance models bc they don't do anything to communicate the expression on the face. They aren't absolutely necessary.
In addition to simplifying, I would exaggerate different features/change their proportions to help with readability and communicating the character's mood. The shapes have a relationship between themselves, but they also have a relationship with the viewer. Kim's nose is smaller than her eyes, but if I drew her facing the camera really close to it, it would be technically very large, maybe larger than her eyes in that instance — the viewer's relationship to the shapes ultimately trumps the innate relationships of the design because the latter exists to facilitate communication with a viewer in the first place.

Why you should vote for each of them and full art below!
Lucy Amano (by @ficklepenguin for D&D)
Tumblr media
Lucy Amano (they/she) is a just a normal human ranger with a pet bear, except they're actually an aasimar and have no idea. They figured out maybe something was up when their friend went down in combat and they exploded into searing light, which is not a normal thing humans do. Their bear is named Nita, and he's the goodest boy. They also have a boyfriend and a girlfriend, or they would, if the trio would ever figure their shit out. And they also just found out that their dad is from the moon, which they didn't even know people lived there.
(art by @everlastingrandom)
Felix Ambercreek (by @ghostbrawl for D&D)
Tumblr media
felix is honestly just my beautiful boy. that's all i can say. unfortunately, players from his campaign will read this so i have to be brief. felix is a newly-paladined paladin of sarenrae who is taking to redemption, forgiveness, and virtuosity like a special interest, but carrying it out in practice incredibly badly. when felix felt sarenrae call him to work at a mercenary guild, he left home with full support of his (also religious) family and took advantage of not seeing his family for a while in order to totally reinvent himself - changing his name and swearing himself to always be veiled, even in combat, so that nobody could see who he is. even as a novice paladin, this has already started to cause him problems -- for example, a band of goblins tried to steal his armor to summon a metal eating monster, and took his veil along with it. out of fear and desparation, felix split from his party and chased the goblins alone, almost dying to the metal monster (and a particularly cruel goblin) and strangling and killing one of the goblins that tried to kill him out of anger and frustration, marring felix's relationship with his god. though he does get his veil (one with embroidery done by another party member) back, it is torn and dirty at the end :-(. maybe one day felix will truly "get" what being a paladin is about, but for now he's largely controlled by fear, rather than the drive to value and redeem others - and he ends up using his responsibility as an escape instead of a duty.
Levlith Craephin (by @the-web-of-iris for D&D)
Tumblr media
Levlith is a tiefling Bloodhunter, a mother of two who originated in the town of Icehaven, A woman of wits and courage, yet her calloused hands hold endless kindness and love. She spent her time caring for her own children, and many other children and adults alike in her hometown, a pillar of her community and someone trusted with the protection of many. Married once to a Drow bard named Briza, the two are now separated (but not divorced. it's complicated) she now reserves herself and has little interest in romance in her middle age life. After a terrifying incident and a close dance with death she came into possession of her ragged sword, as well as her newfound blood-hunter abilities, and soon left her adult children to roam across the empire and beyond in her mission of hunting down dark blots within the world from the shadows. After entering the coast with the intention of making a deal with the leader of a mercenary guild, she begins to meet new people and make new friends, and comes to realise she is now working in the same environment as her once lover briza. Together, the Silverlinings guildmates will follow requests, find themselves in trouble, and explore the unknown. However, what is Levlith's motives? What is she truly looking for? What is she hiding from? |O|nly time will tell.

less of an ask and more of a compliment i love the way your tags are organized…”decay as a commodity” “bodies shifting in narrow spaces” etc is it your own original work or quoting from a song/poem/or something?
helloo angel and welcomee to the show, its always such a joy when people appreciate my silly little tagging system. they're all just random sentences i thought up ages ago, , just to make sense of the mess in front of you etc y'know how it gets love. i couldn't really get behind tagging things as "art" "people, faces places things" etc. i needed to inject a bit of flavour to the whole thing (let this not be read as a subtle jab towards any new york based tumblrinas , we're above that c'mon now). i wouldn't say these little phrases are "personal" by any means but they have been motifs i wanted to actively explore in the art i make so no harm putting them up here i guess haha
for posterity's sake i thought i'd just copy an explanation of my tags from an old ask
decay as a commodity : okay so i envisioned this as a way to just summarize modern living? i think of a whole blueish neon color scheme with this one. my line of thinking was,, with the world slowly rotting away and living becoming so expensive and exhausting, whats the one commodity we all share? wouldn't it be decay? aren't we all slowly fading together etc etc. i use this for images with cooler muted tones and anything with a futuristic vibe,, along with some grimey, monochrome photography
the setting dawn: this is the polar opposite of decay, i think of it as "hope beyond hope" a la Prior Walter's line in Angels in America. i know "the setting sun " might sound more natural but i think of it as,, dawn , when the sun breaks through - in this short period the world starts to wake. qs the dawn sets the day kicks in, with all its routine misery. Dawn i think, is the only time the sun is kind to you, because its still hidden away at least slightly. But the day truly starts and itbeats down on you. And yet we continue to live, past the boredom and the pain, we live past hope, past the quiet comfort of dawn. I use this for pictures with earthy tones and things on the more uplifting side
bodies shifting in narrow spaces: this has some overlap with the decay tag, im not as organized as i need 2 be. i use this for figures & portraits ill want to draw or just really any photography i like that features a human presence. think of it as people so dependent on an outside gaze they constantly try to reinvent themselves, or just, everyday people, getting less and less time to live, having to work and forcing themselves into relationships with any real connection
original sin and other contingencies: im trying to fit this in for more risque photography and maybe things on the more gory side. how do i explain this.. okay so... when there's nothing left to do you'll always have sin to turn to just yo keep yourself occupied, along with other methods/contingencies u get the jist
linen that lingers: my fashion tag nothing more 2 it
the canvas as testimony: for art that is made for the gallery or art that is held in higher regard i guess, more high culture. it includes painting, sculptures, along with architecture,, but maybe i should make an architecture tag. i think of the things here as more personal efforts
motion on a still surface: for art that is energetic and really pops off the page. includes comics, manga, fanart, animation. stuff here may be more low culture but really its not. i just differentiate these art tags as ,,one is stuck to the canvas whatever that canvas may be, while the other leaps off the page
word on a wing let me soar: books, poetry, articles, journals , all words that i adore
a conversation with the self: i wanted this to be for things that are very personal to me but i just use my other tags
angels in descent: my little funny haha tag for yknow ,,, funny haha. yknow the "devil's rejects" the movie? like its a way of saying people so horrible no even the devil would take them. okay so i thought " god's rejects " but that's lame. so i landed on this, like idk...imagine angels falling from grace
arcade shuffle: for my little viddy games lol. sorry for being a #gamergirl but yes it happens sadly ,,moving on
jet jump jive: for songs
at the pictures: for movies,, like imagine im going "cant talk im at the pictures wheee ^_^"
there is such a great distance between now and later: to track my art and writing progress but i barely use it cause it barely draw or write these days i blame the wave of despair that washeth over me
proof of concept: photos i took but there's like almost nothing here
misc that are just funny 2 me like i do it 4 a little chuckle i deserve it:
screw it posting hole - for hole the band
bowies in spaaace - for bowie, after the flight of the concords song cmon its a little funny at least cmon now
twink speaks- for twin peaks lol

Horizon Ask Game
Oioioi, thanks for all the tags, @maybirdie, @meg-noel-art, @nerd-artist and @xxxhellfireravenxxx
1. ride or die ship (your otp): To no one's surprise, it's Ereloy, precisely as it reads on the can. They snatched my heart back in 2017 and haven't released it to this day.
2. most annoying ship: There are no annoying ships. Next question.
3. second favourite ship: Tough call. I'll go with Avad/Ersa, because they 100% had SOMETHING going on. Starcrossed lovers my beloved.
4. favourite platonic relationship: I'm living for the friendship between Alva and Kotallo. And Beta's line about Erend visiting her in the server room and being "loud...but funny". A kingdom for on-screen interactions between the two. Erend can be like "is free little sister". ;;
5. underrated ship: Drakka/Yarra. The raw enemies to lovers potential there...
6. overrated ship: I don't see anything overrated in a genuine outpouring of one's love for two fictional characters.
7. one thing i would change in canon: Now, after two main games and DLC? Oh, a fair bit. Varl's unnecessary death, even admitted to by the writers as being there for shock value. Shock over the drop in narrative quality post-HZD, maybe. Same as reducing Erend to everyone's punching bag without a single thought behind his eyes. Fantastic how everyone easily picks up reading English while Erend struggles with it when he's canonically the only member (besides Aloy and Alva) who knows how to read at all. He's the one asking Aloy in HZD where she learned to read Glyphs, something unique to the Carja who reinvented written language based on a book, and the Oseram who got taught Carja Glyphs for trade, which eventually developed into their own alphabet (they get differentiated as "Carja Glyphs" and "(Oseram) Glyphs" in datapoints. Erend can read both. Two alphabets. That's more than many bilinguals) But sure, he's the dumb dumb who can't read, not the companions that start completely illiterate.
8. something canon did right: All of HZD. What a masterful introduction to a new game franchise, and playing through it the first time unraveling all its mysteries is why I'm still here obsessed with the series.
9. a thing i'm proud of creating for the fandom: Probably the companion art piece for Love Games by my friend @maybirdie. It was incredible working with her as this beast of a fic came together and the friends that I made during that time are near and dear to my heart. And of course, being on the artist team for the Horizon visual novel Focus On The Heart!
10. a character who is perfect to me (wouldn't change a thing): Without a speck of doubt, Gildun. What a bundle of unbridled joy.
11. the character i relate to the most and why: Beta. We both have crippling anxiety, literally never go outside, and are unfortunately Very Smol™
12. character(-s) i hate the most and why: The worst I can feel about a character is indifference.
13. something i've learned from the fandom: After having been in a fandom that crashed and burned over a decade ago and coming out with a general aversion to fandom...at the end of the day, people from all trades of life coming together to enjoy and create for the same thing that they love with all their heart is a precious thing and we're all richer embracing each other's uniqueness in this gathering.
14. three tags i seek out on ao3: Fluff, Hurt/Comfort, Sensual Fingerblasting (wink-wonk)
15. a song i strongly associate with my otp/favourite character: Break In by Halestorm for Ereloy, and for favorite character (Erend) End Of Me by Ashes Remain Tagging @emtazer, @imamandajulius, @souls-that-have-senses, @nmallenart, @bs-fangirl, @cranialgames And everyone who sees this and would like to give a go~

TLDR; speculation on probable Taylor Swift fallout based on 8 year pattern AKA worldwide kickoff of taylor swift's carrer in 2008 with release of debut album, 8 years later falls out of grace thanks to kim and kanye lying, then releases reputation, 8 years later may be on the brink of another fallout to give way to another reinvention era/album
i think i just realized something, i think Taylor Swift might be very close to a worldwide fallout, falling out of the high pedestal she's been on lately. and this is based solely on a pattern i saw, which is:
all fine > 8 years > worldwide fallout > "reset" image, fine again > 8 years > worldwide fallout > "reset" image
allow me to explain.
(forgive me if someone has already said this before, i just haven't seen anything)
so, to establish a timeline.
if we consider The Start of Taylor Swift's professional (to any extent of the word) career as the release of Taylor Swift (the debut album), then it all starts in 2008 (technically the internet says "it was released in North America on October 24, 2006, and elsewhere on March 18, 2008". still the year i remember is 2008, and it was the release date for the world so to say, and honestly, USA is not the only country ever so whatever).
then 8 years later, let's set the scene. it's 2016, Kanye releases Famous, the Taylor line, the music video, the edited phone call video. boom, seems the whole world turns HARD against Taylor (she's gotten hate all the time, but now it seems to be EVERYONE, your mom, her dog, the neighbor, and their aunt Martha, even people who "don't care" about Taylor Swift are swayed to form negative opinions on her, most of them taking to social media for everyone to see).
one year later, 2017, we get reputation. i take this as the beginning of gaining back the trust? the grace? the ykwim of the world. 2020, the real full phone call leaks online, this accelerates the process.
8 years later from the fallout (2016), 2024. here is where we get to speculating grounds, about what i think can happen next based off the 8 year pattern i saw:
2024 is the year people lose faith on Taylor Swift, you can even say the world will turn on her again, it's the cycle of things and in her case it appears to be every 8 years.
you can even say the cogs started moving in 2023, with the whole jet emissions, lack of being vocal about things people see as important, problematic fling with ratty, overdoing the whole merch and consumerism "spend more and more on me and my stuff" thing, borderline estranging and seemingly throwing part of her fan base under the bus (gaylors with the 1989 prologue), allegedly starting a PR relationship with the NFL (spotlight with misogynistic men, generates hate), etc.
she's getting too much media exposure, people who didn't care for her, start not liking her (she's everywhere, it's tiring), people who simply didn't like her now start hating her (no more tolerance), people who hated her, hate her even more and are making it everybody's problem. some people who like or love her, given the radical change of focus in her appearances lately (NFL, new boy, WAGS besties, republican america fuck yeah vibes, as opposed to focus in her art, music, lyrics, thoughts, etc.) may even start not caring about her or disliking her.
so, i think what comes next is a fallout. still, i think that what makes it different this time is that now she has control of the narrative. maybe this time it's planned. i don't think it's a coincidence the two left re-records are Taylor Swift debut album (which started it all, started the cycle) and reputation (the tool for image reset, for changing general opinion on her).
i don't know what the order will be, maybe:
release TS TV, then full blown fallout, "disappears" from public eye (hard given the eras tour is still on), comes back a year later with rep TV and new image
release TS TV, continue slow fallout, rep TV and finish eras tour (closing circles), extreme media exposure that tips the glass, full blown fallout, disappears, comes back a year later with a new album that changes public perception about her rep style
what may this new image be? idk maybe:
a traditional, "actually i'm straight and lowkey homophobic", "i was lying about not wanting to get married", getting married, forming a family, retiring to focus on new family, we see nothing of her ever again
or a controversial, "actually i AM gay and tired of hiding it" or something like that
literally anything else, idk

good morning gamers! hope you are all doing well today :3 i have a few chores i need to do, then after cooking my sopping wet pathetic beautiful bf his sunday lunch, i shoooould be around to finish replies! most of the replies i owe are all at least partly written out in my drafts, just gotta find the groove to finish 'em. mind you, i also have lore on my mind (as always). i really really want to talk about ash and gary's relationship soon, considering its pivotal importance to ash's story and the general plot of this au, but i feel i'd need to write up my meta for how aura works first. something something gotta work hard (sci-fi babble rant) before you can play hard (old man yaoi). and even THEN. i still have a proper promo to make! that to-do list forever heaving, my boy. i'm also thinking about finally reinventing old faithful, that one art from 2014 i used for fucking everything. you know the one (under cut for tidiness' sake).
Tumblr media
THIS FUCKER. man i don't know what i was on in 2014, but i have finally accepted that this particular brand of old spark cannot be reclaimed. i must create a new spark. and that's exciting! hopefully the new version will hit just as hard as the old one :D

'As the 2020s progress, it’s clear that escaping remakes and reboots is an impossible task. From film to television, each year sees more than a handful of original works being reinvented for a new generation, to varying degrees of success. At some point, we have to ask ourselves what works of art are not only deserving of a reinvention but need to be reinvented.
When Ripley was announced all the way back in 2019, many fans of Patricia Highsmith’s novel and the subsequent Anthony Minghella film were cautious. Why would something as beloved as the film version need to be remade, and how would the original novel’s text be changed for the streaming generation? Thankfully, from the series’ first episode, it’s clear that this isn’t a direct remake, but instead a resurrection of Highsmith’s prose and characters.
Like all its other versions, Ripley follows Tom Ripley (Andrew Scott), who is hired by a shipping tycoon to travel to Italy and convince his son, Richard “Dickie” Greenleaf (Johnny Flynn), to return to the United States. Acting as if he’s an old college friend, Tom quickly immerses himself into not only Dickie’s luxurious lifestyle, but Dickie as a person as well. But, as Tom’s obsession with his friend gets deeper, their relationship and lives quickly unravel into something more sinister.
Despite people originally being skeptical about his casting, Andrew Scott gives one of the best performances of his career as Thomas Ripley. While it may not be as showy as his turn in All of Us Strangers, under the surface of his Ripley lies a magnetic and brooding disposition. It’s slight at times, but as the show moves along his smirks and exasperated sighs work perfectly and give Ripley a nuance that wasn’t necessarily present in the film version.
Scott plays Ripley at times like a man possessed; he looks at Dickie in a way that’s all-consuming, as if he wants to cannibalize him so Dickie will be a part of him forever. By killing him and stealing his identity, Thomas is keeping an aspect of Dickie alive, immortalizing him through his own adventures and in turn transforming the man into Ripley himself. Through the killing, their identities become intertwined, suspending both of them in a perpetual limbo that will haunt their lives and legacies forever.
As the series unfolds, Tom’s resolve begins to crack, leaving in its wake a gaping hole to be filled with paranoia. We spend a lot of time with this version of the titular character, and it gives viewers a certain introspection that its film version didn’t grant to us. It’s interesting watching Ripley crack, while the paranoia is there it seems to harden him even more. His murderous desires are fleeting, but when they arise Scott shows it with a slight smirk and a crinkled eye, proving that despite the fear of being caught, Tom cannot help his true desires.
It’s a different portrayal than that of Matt Damon in The Talented Mr. Ripley, and one that in my opinion, makes this version all the more richer. We get to not only see a different side of the series’ titular character, but the people who surround him as well. Dakota Fanning breathes a staggering amount of life into Marge Sherwood, a character who in the novel and the film version feels devoid of both agency and a character arc. Here, her status as Dickie’s girlfriend is just as unstable as Tom’s friendship with him, making the two characters direct foils to one another. Fanning portrays her excellently, going toe-to-toe with Scott whenever they’re on screen together. It’s in their interactions that you’re forced to confront the idea that Tom may finally be outmatched.
In this adaptation, it’s not just Tom who is hiding within themselves. It’s Marge, Dickie, and even the scene-stealing Freddie Miles who weaves through various scenes like a predator stalking its prey. Everyone in Ripley purposely feels like caricatures of the roles they’re trying to portray in society, which causes Tom to appear out of his depth. He appears ostracized within the world he’s involved himself in, and at times it’s impossible not to feel some sort of empathy for him. He’s in over his head, despite putting himself in this position. It becomes increasingly clear as the series unravels that while it may not happen immediately, Tom cannot go on living his life like this.
As the show reaches its final episodes and Tom’s life enters its most unstable stage, Scott’s performance heightens until it crescendos into one of the best of the year. It makes for a riveting watch, one whose tempo increases as it becomes a game of cat-and-mouse filled with deceit. From its staggering cinematography to its wistful score, it’s clear that every person working on this show aimed to not only make a faithful adaptation but one that could rival its original material. While Ripley may not have been a needed remake, the miniseries does an excellent job of laying all the intricacies of Highsmith’s novel bare.
Summary
Featuring incredible cinematography, a wistful score, and a career-defining performance from Andrew Scott, ‘Ripley’ is a triumph that rivals its source material.
4.5 Stars'

*20 mobile games to brighten your summer *
BOSSGAME: THE BOSS IS MY HEART
Like its name more or less implies, Bossgame: The Boss Is My Heart is a boss rush in which we wage battle after battle. Often being some of the most memorable moments in games, boss fights have become their own genre all about creative reinvention of gameplay. This is exactly what Bossgame accomplishes, while also telling a worthwhile story between battles.
In this 2D pixel art game, we follow a lesbian couple, Sophie and Anna, a priestess and a witch who hunt demons for the church of Mammon. Intersected by well-written dialogue where the two lovers talk about their relationship and question their work, the game offers a succession of bosses, who also wear their hearts on their sleeves (and being very entertaining all-around).
These varied fights are played by holding your phone sideways, and using each thumb to control Sophie and Anna. In action, the game plays almost like a rhythm game, where you must alternate between short and long presses, and between attack and defense "buttons". Fights in Bossgame ask for careful stamina management and pattern memorization, well-established concepts that nonetheless feel like a brilliant pair with the game's controls. As a whole, Lily Valeen's game has a refreshing feel to it, not unlike its love story filled with humor and charm.
I don't know what else to say, it's just really really lovely!! Jeez...

scandalous icon: david bowie - an analysis
“I always had a repulsive need to be something more than human.” - David Bowie
Spoken like a person with such power-hungry and ambitious signs such as a Capricorn sun and Leo moon. He was the self-described “tasteful thief” who appropriated from and influenced glam rock, soul, disco, new wave, punk rock and haute couture, and whose edgy alter egos invited fans to explore their own dark places. He was a person of relentless movement. He was an innovative, visionary, restless artist. His theatrical flare, creativity, sexual ambiguity, and incredible music kept the public endlessly interested. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. Rolling Stone ranked him among the greatest artists in history. As of 2022, he was the best-selling vinyl artist of the 21st century. With his sylphlike body, chalk-white skin, jagged teeth and eyes that appeared to be two different colors, Mr. Bowie combined sexual energy with fluid dance moves and a theatrical charisma that mesmerized male and female admirers alike. He was complex, an explorer of human impulses that could not be quantified. He was the infinitely changeable, fiercely forward-looking songwriter who taught generations of musicians about the power of reinvention. Throughout his career, he reinvented not just his sound but his persona over and over again; his best known persona was the flamboyant, androgynous, orange-haired glam rock alien alter ego Ziggy Stardust.
Beginning life as a dissident folk-rock spaceman, his ascent was measured rather than rapid, but once his album Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars got their claws into the British rock scene, he soared like a supernova, going on to sell over 150 million albums, receive countless accolades, and become a beacon of light for those embracing their sexuality (not least of all those in the LGBT community). He went on to embrace other personas after the demise of the band: a well-dressed, blue-eyed soul singer, a Nazi and fascist-influenced European (the Thin White Duke), a drug-loving art rocker (the Berlin trilogy), a new-wave hit-maker, a hard rocker, a techno enthusiast and a jazz impressionist. His ever-changing, outrageous personae served to mask the painful shyness and insecurity of his younger years. His flair for theatricality won him a legion of fans. His fickleness cost him relationships, friendships and professional partnerships, could be jarring. Members of the Spiders From Mars, his band during his glitter-rock Ziggy Stardust years, learned that they were being fired when he announced it onstage at the end of a 1973 tour. Through it all, David Bowie has definitely always been his own special creation. And it all began for him so long ago when he was just a kid in South London, where he began the journey that, by dint of his genius, his persistence, and his sheer hard work, would transform him into a global icon whose name, image, music, and artistry would endure forever.

David Bowie, according to astrotheme, was a Capricorn sun and Leo moon. He was born David Robert Jones in South London, Brixton, England. His father, Haywood Stenton Jones, belonged to a well-off family who were partners in the Public Benefit Boot Company; his mother, Margaret Mary "Peggy" Jones worked as a waitress at a cinema. The mother of three illegitimate children (including David) at a time when a girl could have been ostracized by society for having even one, Peggy was never afraid to dance to a different drummer. The only child his parents had together, David was born left-handed, which in 1950s England was considered a disgrace, an aberration that had to be corrected at all costs. His schoolmates yelled that he was “the devil,” simply because he wrote with his left hand. Worse still, “the teacher used to smack my hand to try and make me right-handed,” he said. He showed an interest in music from an early age and began playing the saxophone at age 13. He was greatly influenced by his half-brother Terry, who was nine years older and exposed the young Jones to the worlds of rock music and beat literature. Terry was diagnosed with schizophrenia and institutionalized when David was a young man. David suffered another blow, this one quite literal, in a teenage brawl over a girl that caused his left pupil to be permanently dilated.
He attended a high school that would prepare him for a career as a commercial artist. After a few lessons on a plastic saxophone purchased on a payment plan, he began playing in local bands, finding that he liked singing and the female adulation that came with it. To avoid confusion with Davy Jones of the Monkees, he renamed himself after 19th-century American frontiersman Jim Bowie and the hunting knife associated with him. Fascinated by musical theater, David joined a mime troupe led by the dancer (and, briefly, his lover) Lindsay Kemp. By 20, he had spent time at a Buddhist monastery in Scotland and dabbled in theatrical troupes. Bowie met Angela Barnett in April 1969. They married within a year. Her impact on him was immediate, and her involvement in his career far-reaching. With 1969’s Space Oddity, whose dramatic title track told the story of ill-fated astronaut Major Tom, he had a hit. On the following year’s The Man Who Sold the World, he experimented with psychedelia, and in 1971, he fused pop-rock with art pretense and experimentalism with Hunky Dory, his first significant album. Angela and David had a son born during the recording of Hunky Dory, Duncan Zowie Haywood Jones.
After a period of experimentation, he re-emerged in 1972 during the glam rock era with his flamboyant and androgynous alter ego Ziggy Stardust. The character was spearheaded by the success of Bowie's single "Starman" and album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, which won him widespread popularity. In 1975, Bowie's style shifted towards a sound he characterized as "plastic soul", initially alienating many of his UK fans but garnering him his first major US crossover success with the number-one single "Fame" and the album Young Americans. Extensive cocaine use made him jittery and paranoid, even as it enabled him to be creatively prolific. In 1976, Bowie starred in the cult film The Man Who Fell to Earth and released Station to Station. Seeking calm and anonymity, Bowie spent much of the late 1970s in West Berlin, where he again changed direction with the electronic-inflected album Low, the first of three collaborations with Brian Eno that came to be known as the "Berlin Trilogy". "Heroes" (1977) and Lodger (1979) followed; each album reached the UK top five and received lasting critical praise. These experimentations with ambient sound presaged the synthesizer-heavy music of the 1980s.
After nine years of marriage, Angie and David Bowie separated, and they divorced on February 8, 1980 in Switzerland. In the divorce settlement, she received £500,000, paid in installments, and a 10-year gagging clause. Not wanting to fight over custody, she left their son with David. Returning to live in New York City, Bowie began expanding his range as an actor. He played the lead in a stage production of "The Elephant Man", for which he received critical praise. Bowie regularly released albums through the 1980s and 1990s, although none approached the success of his previous output. He fell in love with Somalian supermodel Iman Abdulmajid, whom he married in 1992 and with whom he had a daughter, Alexandria Zahra Jones, in 2000. After suffering a heart attack backstage during a tour in 2004, he stopped producing albums or touring for nearly a decade, devoting himself to family life. In 2013, Bowie returned from a decade-long recording hiatus with The Next Day. He remained musically active until his death from liver cancer at his home in New York City. He died two days after both his 69th birthday and the release of his final album, Blackstar (2016).
This is a special birthday analysis for David Bowie. Happy birthday, you Capricorn god.

Overall personality snapshot: Deeply serious yet poetically playful, he may have been torn between the self-imposed responsibilities of his career and social ambitions, and his desire to make a splash and have fun. Both proud and humble, at times he couldn’t decide whether he was the greatest or the most inadequate person he knew. When he got his industrious and playful elements working together, however, the world had better watch out, for in his own steady yet compelling way he could be the embodiment of purposeful ambition. No matter what his job was, he was a born professional. With expertly designed flair, he wanted to shine for himself and to achieve for the world. His reputation mattered a lot to him, and when he knows he has earned his praise he savours it like nobody else. He didn’t really mean to be a snob, but he had a way of nonchalantly lording it over people. This is because his belief in herself and in what he felt he must do was so intense. As a man born with this combination he found his way to the top of his chosen mountain. His was a pairing of sunny high-summer and serious mid-winter, an adventurous, gutsy mix of tough-willed, dedicated service carried out with zest and pizzazz.
He had the charisma of a star yet he worked dutifully behind the scenes, laying the foundations and preparing the party. Then on the day, he made the perfect host or hostess, carrying out his duties with total self-possession and real style. An air of authority and immense professionalism surrounded all his endeavours. He would do whatever was necessary, no matter how hard, to produce a polished performance and a superb result. With a strong social conscience, a real sense of noblesse oblige and a desire to make the world a better place, he was drawn to politics or fund-raising; good works and charities flourished on his enthusiasm and dedication. Whatever he did, he was likely to end up being put in charge, which was just as well, for subordinate positions were not really his scene. At times when the sun was shining he may have protested at having work piled upon him, yet let anyone deprive him of his load and he would feel not only hurt but somehow lost and guilty. Not all his work was totally altruistic. There could be something of the gold-digger in him, constantly alert for opportunities, yet he didn’t expect any free lunches, even if he did enjoy getting the best for the least. He was someone who, to quote her fellow Capricorn/Leo, Jack London, ‘will settle for good pay, good grub and hard work rather than poor pay, poor grub and easy work’. He had pride and confidence in his own achievements and, yes, he thought he could try harder, but in the end, he didn't do so badly, really, did he?
He was tall and slim with good bone structure and clear, open and refined features. His eyes were extraordinary, helping to give him an electric or magnetic aura. His distinguishing feature was his hair, which was always chicly styled, whether long or short. His thought processes were methodical and on the conservative side. He was ambitious and shrewd, serious, practical and prudent, although he could also be narrow-minded, lacking in humour and too concerned with material status. His mind was rational, cool and calculating, and his memory and logic were very good. The Sagittarian qualities that he brought to his career were those of vision, energy, enthusiasm and an ability to organize others. He needed recognition, room to maneuver and a fair degree of authority. He sought meaning and fulfillment in his life through career status and recognition. When dealing with colleagues, he could place strong demands on them. He had boundless enthusiasm and big ideas coupled with high expectations of succeeding. He was also self-sufficient and broad-minded. His genuine pioneering spirit, positive outlook and large-scale personal ambitions led him right to the top. When dealing with colleagues, he could place strong demands on them. He could be an intensely emotional person with extremely strong physical desires. He tended to see himself as a desirable person to the opposite sex. He needed to be loved, but he could also be extremely suspicious of other people and their motives. He acted very cautiously until he was sure of situations and how other people felt. His perseverance was strong, but he needed to learn moderation and not to over-rate his abilities or capacity for doing things. He was interested in foreign names and places, and by anything mysterious. He was a reliable and loyal person. His will and sense of honour were strong and he was a great organizer. On the downside, his self-assuredness could become dogmatism and imperiousness. Conservatism may have affected his creativity, artistic values and love affairs. This expressed itself as self-imposed restrictions or as selfishness. He often felt inadequate, which created an insidious form of oppression over all his forms of expression. He could also take herself so seriously, that people think that he was older than his years.
He was part of a generation that was strongly interested in humanitarian ideals, new avenues of communication and progress in mechanical skills. As a member of this generation, he was able to bring original ideas to both his career and spare-time interests. Crises in thought and ideology arose because he looked beyond tradition and old attitudes towards new original and inventive ways of looking at things, such as music and sexuality. His active mind tended to need constant stimulation and his tastes could be quite fickle and difficult to satisfy. He belonged to a time of peace-loving idealism when the family unit and the way relationships were managed underwent great changes. He could be too idealistic and a little unrealistic when it came to matters of love, sex and romance. As a member of this generation, he needed to be motivated to make the most of his potential, because the line of least resistance appeared very attractive, especially when it involved pleasure-seeking. He embodied the Libra Neptune generation in the sense that he was a huge part of a time when beauty reappeared in fashion. He was part of a generation which was highlighted by the clash between authoritarianism and individualism. As a member of the Leo Plutonian generation, he wanted freedom in his relationships and demanded the loyalty of his friends as a right. As a member of this generation, he wanted power over his own life and was prepared to challenge established structures. He didn’t feel comfortable being dictated to, unless he in some way agreed to it beforehand. He was a part of excesses of the sixties and seventies. He was part of a generation that brought about a revolution in forms of entertainment, recreational activities and leisure time, as well as attitudes towards children. David’s sexual adventures—some partly cocaine-fueled, all ignited by his unbridled appetites and his propensity to cast a wide net, coupled with his unlimited opportunities—typified his generation’s newfound ability to live out their wildness.
Love/sex life: He was the most impulsive lover of this type and the one most likely to forget practicality and follow his instincts. This spontaneity, when combined with his strong physical drives, made him a tremendously exciting, adventurous and unpredictable sex partner. It also got him into more than his share of trouble. But acting in haste and repenting in leisure was not a problem for him. Like all Mars in Capricorn lovers, he rather liked repenting. What was lacking in his sexual nature was subtlety. He pursued his desire with such directness and determination that he could appear inconsiderate and crude and he didn’t control his relationships as much as he bullied people into seeing things his way. The good new is that he was so affectionate and generous a lover that he was easily forgiven his sins. The bad news is that this quick forgiveness only made him more likely to commit the same offense again and again (more on this in my David Bowie sexuality post on my members-only website).
minor asteroids and points:
North Node: Gemini
Lilith: Capricorn
Vertex: Virgo
Fortune: Leo
East Point: Aquarius
His North Node in Gemini dictated that he needed to prevent his idealism from influencing his thoughts to such a high degree. He needed to consciously develop a more clear-minded and analytical approach involving his thought processes. His Lilith in Capricorn ensured that he was dangerously attracted to women who had a scrappy plucky attitude hot-wired into their psyche. He liked a woman who needed to be in control and to be mistress of her own destiny, because her life was in the control of not-so-well-meaning others as a child. Her Vertex in Virgo, 7th house dictated that he wanted a union which would take one to ultimate salvation or spiritual initiation, based on a shared ideal of dedication and service. There was a fantasy of joining with someone who had unique psychic and/or healing powers and the focus is on the practical work which will make everything all right. He was always in a partnership of one kind or another (if only in his head), desperately seeking one, or decided that it wasn’t worth the risk since his expectations would never be met. There was a sense that he wasn’t really complete unless he was intimately involved with someone. On some levels there was an irrational fear of ending up alone. The dark side was that he could get highly self-righteous about acceptable modes of behaviour in interacting with others and thereby alienate the very people he longed for. His parental role model was less than secure in his subconscious perceptions, though it may have seemed fine on an external level.
His Part of Fortune in Leo and Part of Spirit in Aquarius dictated that his destiny led him to a prominent position in life as a leader of some sort. Fame and prestige brought him success and material rewards. Success came to him when he stepped forward into the spotlight. His soul’s purpose asked him to embrace unique and unconventional life experiences. He felt spiritual connections and the spark of the divine when there was a humanitarian benefit to his efforts. East Point in Aquarius dictated that he was more likely to identify with his uniqueness, his individuality and his feelings for justice and fair play. He may have enjoyed shocking others occasionally with unconventional behaviour, designed to prove that all rules can be broken. He may have been very unique and inventive or simply eccentric and strange. He may have been rebellious in a number of areas. He was likely to identify with his mind; he may have been a great rationalizer—able to intellectualize everything.
elemental dominance:
fire
earth
He was dynamic and passionate, with strong leadership ability. He generated enormous warmth and vibrancy. He was exciting to be around, because he was genuinely enthusiastic and usually friendly. However, he could either be harnessed into helpful energy or flame up and cause destruction. Confident and opinionated, he was fond of declarative statements such as “I will do this” or “It’s this way.” When out of control—usually because he was bored, or hadn’t been acknowledged—he was bossy, demanding, and even tyrannical. But at his best, his confidence and vision inspired others to conquer new territory in the world, in society, and in themselves. He was a practical, reliable man and could provide structure and protection. He was oriented toward practical experience and thought in terms of doing rather than thinking, feeling, or imagining. Could be materialistic, unimaginative, and resistant to change. But at his best, he provided the practical resources, analysis, and leadership to make dreams come true.
modality dominance:
fixed
He liked the challenge of managing existing routines with ever more efficiency, rather than starting new enterprises or finding new ways of doing things. He likely had trouble delegating duties and had a very hard time seeing other points of view; he tried to implement the human need to create stability and order in the wake of change.
house dominants:
7th
12th
10th
His attitude towards partnerships with other people was emphasized in hid life, whether on a personal or on a business level. It also revealed his marriage partner. It indicated how he dealt with other people and how his relationships with others affected him. Also had the propensity to attract enemies, and the effect that they had on his life was an issue. He had great interest in the unconscious, and indulged in a lot of hidden and secret affairs. His life was defined by seclusion and escapism. He had a certain mysticism and hidden sensitivity, as well as an intense need for privacy. His ambition in relation to the outside world, the identity he wished to achieve in regard to the community at large, and his career aspirations were all themes that were emphasized throughout his life. All matters outside the home, his public image and reputation were very important to his. His attitude to people in authority, and how he viewed the outside world, as well as the influence of his mother and his own attitude to her was highlighted.
planet dominants:
Venus
Moon
Sun
He was romantic, attractive and valued beauty, had an artistic instinct, and was sociable. He had an easy ability to create close personal relationships, for better or worse, and to form business partnerships. He was defined by his inner world; by his emotional reactions to situations, how emotions flowed through him, motivating and compelling him—or limiting him and holding him back. He held great capacity to become a part of the whole rather than attempting to master the parts. He wanted to become whatever it is that he sought. He had vitality and creativity, as well as a strong ego and was authoritarian and powerful. He likely had strong leadership qualities, he definitely knew who he was, and he had tremendous will. He met challenges and believed in expanding his life.
sign dominants:
Leo
Capricorn
Sagittarius
He loved being the center of attention and often surrounded herself with admirers. He had an innate dramatic sense, and life was definitely his stage. His flamboyance and personal magnetism extended to every facet of her life. He wanted to succeed and make an impact in every situation. As a Leo dominant, he was, at his best, optimistic, honorable, loyal, and ambitious. He was a serious-minded person who often seemed aloof and tightly in control of his emotions and his personal domain. Even as a youngster, there was a mature air about him, as if he was born with a profound core that few outsiders ever see. He was easily impressed by outward signs of success, but was interested less in money than in the power that money represents. He was a true worker—industrious, efficient, and disciplined. His innate common sense gave his the ability to plan ahead and to work out practical ways of approaching goals. More often than not, he succeeded at whatever he set out to do. He possessed a quiet dignity that was unmistakable. He sought the truth, expressed it as he saw it—and didn’t care if anyone else agreed with him. He saw the large picture of any issue and couldn’t be bothered with the mundane details. He was always outspoken and likely couldn’t understand why other people weren’t as candid. After all, what was there to hide?
Read more about him under the cut.
David Bowie was one of the most influential and prolific writers and performers of popular music, but he was much more than that; he was also an accomplished actor, a mime and an intellectual, as well as an art lover whose appreciation and knowledge of it had led to him amassing one of the biggest collections of 20th century art.
Born David Jones, he changed his name to Bowie in the 1960s, to avoid confusion with the then well-known Davy Jones (lead singer of The Monkees). The 1960s were not a happy period for Bowie, who remained a struggling artist, awaiting his breakthrough. He dabbled in many different styles of music (without commercial success), and other art forms such as acting, mime, painting, and play-writing. He finally achieved his commercial breakthrough in 1969 with the song "Space Oddity", which was released at the time of the moon landing. Despite the fact that the literal meaning of the lyrics relates to an astronaut who is lost in space, this song was used by the BBC in their coverage of the moon landing, and this helped it become such a success. The album, which followed "Space Oddity", and the two, which followed (one of which included the song "The Man Who Sold The World", covered by Lulu and Nirvana) failed to produce another hit single, and Bowie's career appeared to be in decline.
However, he made the first of many successful "comebacks" in 1972 with "Ziggy Stardust", a concept album about a space-age rock star. This album was followed by others in a similar vein, rock albums built around a central character and concerned with futuristic themes of Armageddon, gender dysfunction/confusion, as well as more contemporary themes such as the destructiveness of success and fame, and the dangers inherent in star worship. In the mid-1970s, Bowie was a heavy cocaine abuser and sometime heroin user.
In 1975, he changed tack. Musically, he released "Young Americans", a soul (or plastic soul as he later referred to it) album. This produced his first number one hit in the US, "Fame". He also appeared in his first major film, The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976). With a permanently-dilated pupil and skeletal frame, he certainly looked the part of an alien. The following year, he released "Station to Station," containing some of the material he had written for the soundtrack to this film (which was not used). As his drug problem heightened, his behavior became more erratic. Reports of his insanity started to appear, and he continued to waste away physically. He fled back to Europe, finally settling in Berlin, where he changed musical direction again and recorded three of the most influential albums of all time, an electronic trilogy with Brian Eno "Low, Heroes and Lodger". Towards the end of the 1970s, he finally kicked his drug habit, and recorded the album many of his fans consider his best, the Japanese-influenced "Scary Monsters". Around this time, he appeared in the title role of the Broadway drama The Elephant Man, and to considerable acclaim.
The next few years saw something of a drop-off in his musical output as his acting career flourished, culminating in his acclaimed performance in Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence (1983). In 1983, he released "Let's Dance," an album which proved an unexpected massive commercial success, and produced his second #1 hit single in the United States. According to producer Nile Rodgers, the album was made in just 17 days and was "the easiest album" he'd ever made in his life. The tour which followed, "Serious Moonlight", was his most successful ever. Faced with this success on a massive scale, Bowie apparently attempted to "repeat the formula" in the next two albums, with less success (and to critical scorn). Finally, in the late 1980s, he turned his back on commercial success and his solo career, forming the hard rock band, Tin Machine, who had a deliberate limited appeal. By now, his acting career was in decline. After the comparative failure of Labyrinth (1986), the movie industry appears to have decided that Bowie was not a sufficient name to be a lead actor in a major movie, and since that date, most of his roles have been cameos or glorified cameos. Tin Machine toured extensively and released two albums, with little critical or commercial success.
In 1992, Bowie again changed direction and re-launched his solo career with "Black Tie White Noise", a wedding album inspired by his recent marriage to Iman. He released three albums to considerable critical acclaim and reasonable commercial success. In 1995, he renewed his working relationship with Brian Eno to record "Outside." After an initial hostile reaction from the critics, this album has now taken its place with his classic albums. In 2003, Bowie released an album entitled 'Reality.' The Reality Tour began in November 2003 and, after great commercial success, was extended into July 2004. In June 2004, Bowie suffered a heart attack and the tour did not finish its scheduled run.
After recovering, Bowie gave what turned out to be his final live performance in a three-song set with Alicia Keys at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York in November 2006. He also returned to acting. He played Tesla in The Prestige (2006) and had a small cameo in the comedy Extras: David Bowie (2006) for fan Ricky Gervais. In 2007, he did a cartoon voice in SpongeBob SquarePants (1999) playing Lord Royal Highness. He had a brief cameo in the movie ''Bandslam'' released in 2009; after a ten year hiatus from recording, he released a new album called 'The Next Day', featuring a homage cover to his earlier work ''Heroes''. The music video of ''Stars are Out Tonight'' premiered on 25 February 2013. It consists of other songs like ''Where Are We Now?", "Valentine's Day", "Love is Lost", "The Next Day", etc.
In 2014, Bowie won British Male Solo Artist at the 2014 Brit Awards, 30 years since last winning it, and became the oldest ever Brit winner. Bowie wrote and recorded the opening title song to the television miniseries The Last Panthers (2015), which aired in November 2015. The theme used for The Last Panthers (2015) was also the title track for his January 2016 release, ''Blackstar" (released on 8 January 2016, Bowie's 69th birthday) was met with critical acclaim. Following Bowie's death two days later, on 10 January 2016, producer Tony Visconti revealed Bowie had planned the album to be his swan song, and a "parting gift" for his fans before his death. An EP, No Plan, was released on 8 January 2017, which would have been Bowie's 70th birthday. The day following his death, online viewing of Bowie's music skyrocketed, breaking the record for Vevo's most viewed artist in a single day.
On 15 January, "Blackstar" debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart; nineteen of his albums were in the UK Top 100 Albums Chart, and thirteen singles were in the UK Top 100 Singles Chart. The song also debuted at #1 on album charts around the world, including Australia, France, Germany, Italy, New Zealand and the US Billboard 200. At the 59th Annual Grammy Awards, Bowie won all five nominated awards: Best Rock Performance; Best Alternative Music Album; Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical; Best Recording Package; and Best Rock Song. The wins marked Bowie's first ever in musical categories. David Bowie influenced the course of popular music several times and had an effect on several generations of musicians. (x)

Françoise Gilot, the accomplished painter whose art was eclipsed by her relationship with Pablo Picasso, has died at 101.
She made celebrated paintings exhibited at the Met and MoMA, and wrote a best-selling account of her years with Picasso. By Harrison Smith
The Washington Post: Françoise Gilot had just finished dinner at Le Catalan, a Left Bank bistro in Paris, when Pablo Picasso approached her table with a bowl of cherries. He was 61, a master artist who had already reinvented himself several times over. She was 21 and, like the friend accompanying her that night in May 1943, starting out as a painter.
“That’s the funniest thing I’ve heard all day,” Picasso told the two elegant young women upon learning they were artists. “Girls who look like that can’t be painters.”
In fact, Gilot’s work had just appeared in an exhibition for the first time; one of her canvases was a veiled swipe at the city’s Nazi occupiers, showing a taxidermied hawk with the Eiffel Tower rising in the background.
She would continue to paint through the tumultuous years that followed, as she became Picasso’s mistress, model and muse, the mother of two of his children and, by his account, the only woman who ever left him.
Ms. Gilot, who was 101 when she died June 6 at a hospital in Manhattan, achieved a distinguished career as a painter, with her work shown at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art and Centre Pompidou in Paris.
She also published graceful, incisive memoirs and poetry collections, even as she spent decades battling with those who sought to define her by the men in her life, including Picasso, her friend Henri Matisse and her second husband, American virologist Jonas Salk, who helped eradicate polio.
Those men certainly influenced and inspired her, Ms. Gilot said. But there was no reason to view her as a supporting figure rather than a leading one. “Lions mate with lions,” she told Mirabella magazine. “They don’t mate with mice.”
The only child of a wealthy agronomist, Françoise Gilot was born in the Paris suburb of Neuilly-sur-Seine on Nov. 26, 1921. As a child, she borrowed paintbrushes from her mother, a homemaker who worked with watercolors and ceramics. Her father, who pined for a son and dressed Ms. Gilot in boys’ clothing, pushed her toward international law.
Gilot graduated from the Sorbonne at 17, in 1938, with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy. She was studying law when the Germans invaded France in 1940. “After that,” she told TV interviewer Charlie Rose, “I thought, ‘Well, you know, I don’t know how long we will remain alive. So I’m going to do what I want.’ ”
She dropped out of law school at the Sorbonne, an event that marked the beginning of a years-long estrangement with her father, and was studying at the Académie Julian art school when she began visiting Picasso’s studio in 1943 after their initial encounter at the bistro.
By then, Picasso had separated from his first wife, Russian dancer Olga Khokhlova, and taken up with photographer Dora Maar. He soon abandoned her for Ms. Gilot.
Their relationship, she wrote in a best-selling memoir, “Life With Picasso” (1964), was “a catastrophe I didn’t want to avoid” — a passionate romance that was intellectually and artistically fulfilling but marred by episodes of physical and emotional abuse.
The couple lived together for nearly a decade, spending much of their time at a Riviera villa known as La Galloise, where Picasso introduced Ms. Gilot to friends including the existentialist philosophers Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, the filmmaker and artist Jean Cocteau, and the painters Georges Braque and Matisse.
The latter “acted like a visa on my passport to the realm of art,” Ms. Gilot said. Picasso incorporated Gilot and their two children, Claude and Paloma, into sculptures, paintings, ceramics and lithographs. But Gilot’s own work drew more from Matisse, whose brightly colored, emotionally reserved style she preferred over Picasso’s expressionistic technique.
When their work was exhibited together in 2012 at the Gagosian Gallery in Manhattan, Picasso biographer John Richardson declared that “Picasso took from her rather more than she took from him.”
Reviewing her 1965 solo exhibition at the Findlay Gallery in Manhattan, New York Times art critic Stuart Preston wrote that Ms. Gilot “is an artist very much in her own right …
"Without any self-indulgent interest in sensuous or ‘interesting’ textures, she has a feeling for the quality of paint itself and for the mysteriously effective relationship of color and shape that lends her paintings, large and small, a genuinely authoritative air.”
In 1970, she married Salk, perhaps the most famous physician in the world for his work on polio two decades earlier. He was running a lab in San Diego when a mutual friend introduced him to Ms. Gilot.
Salk knew next to nothing about painting; she knew little of science. The couple remained together until his death in 1995.
Gilot eventually sold all the Picasso works she owned, including “La Femme-Fleur,” because of the “bad luck” that seemed to trail him — including the suicides of his mistress Marie-Thérèse Walter, his wife Roque and his grandson Pablito.
Gilot chaired the fine arts department at the University of Southern California. She also wrote books including “Matisse and Picasso: A Friendship in Art” (1990) and “About Women” (2015), with Lisa Alther, and was appointed an officer in France’s Legion of Honor in 2009.
Despite losing vision in her left eye, she continued painting into her 90s.

welcome to marina, NATALYA FYODOROVA ( cis woman, she / her ) ! they are a FORTY NINE year old who has lived on the island for SIXTEEN YEARS. word on the street is they’re currently living in MARINA HEIGHTS and works as an ESTATE AGENT. everyone also says they look a lot like RACHEL WEISZ. what do you think? — NORA, 27, she/her, GMT. pinterest. blog tag.
ok i started writing stuff specifically for marina and then opened up her old bio to copy some stuff and didn't realise how much i had so apologies for the Longest Intro You Have Ever Seen !!!!
i was gonna leave most of this in google docs but tbh it might be relevant for connections so CTRL + F if u need to find something or ask bcos its a fucking manuscript
THIS ISN'T EVEN THE FULL ORIGINAL THING - THIS WAS MEANT TO BE A SUMMARY - ITS ACTUALLY FUCKED HOW LONG HER ORIGINAL ONE WAS. if you love to read and want to hear more about her there are even more bullet points about her childhood and growing up here. im struggling to get my head around it tbh.
summary of natalya.
tw: violence, addiction, overdose
TLDR: russian military brat and ballet prodigy, moved to moscow at 17 to work for the bolshoi ballet.  at the tender age of 23 she married her sugar daddy rostislav ‘rocco’ fyodorov (an art dealer from saint petersburg, but also a document forger & money launderer with ties to the mafia). he was the great love of her life. they got divorced and remarried and divorced again. after her second divorce from rocco she married and divorced a film critic with pretty serious addiction issues. most of the nineties were a blur spent at drug-fuelled orgies in moscow. at 26 she gets remarried to rocco. she misses the tempestuous up and down of their relationship, she misses being owned by someone. they fight like criminals and fuck like animals. at 27 she gives birth to will, and two years later, she gives birth to maura.
after the birth of her two kids they reinvent themselves & move to the states for a fresh start without crime. rocco starts working as a junior art dealer for a gallery in north carolina. he stops going by ‘rocco’ and instead by ‘rusty’, a non-threatening, cuddly moniker for rostislav. he plays the part well, forges himself a few letters of recommendation to go with his fake diplomas and is eventually promoted to gallery curator ($$$$). for several years milf rachel was a stay at home mom, which suited her perfectly. rocco uses the advance on his salary and builds them the dream house. things are good. but despite moving, and changing their lives for the better, trouble follows them. a former colleague turns up with the age old adage - one last job. rocco turns him down. several months later, they send another messenger. it turns out rocco owes a lot of people a lot of money. rather than run from it, he pays them off. the salary he’s worked so hard for starts to dwindle, but he wants out of it. money’s easier than bloodshed. soon, there’s talk of downsizing. natalya refuses to leave the house he built for her - the house she deserves. so she lowers herself to getting a job. for several years she was an uber driver, picture her turning up in a black convertible blasting bach. after working as an uber driver for several years she got a job in real estate, first as a lettings administrative assistant, then a lettings negotiator, eventually moving on to be an estate agent of luxury properties. after a few years in real estate, footing the bills while rocco bats off the debt collectors, she starts to think that she can do this breadwinning thing on her own.
it’s been several years now since the first of the mafia’s debt collectors arrived with the offer of a job. they should be in the clear by now. there’s no logical way to explain why rocco would owe so much - feels like it’s simply to punish him for turning down a job. despite the money that continues to leave their shared account, the trouble never stops. the debts never disappear. give an inch and they’ll take a mile. it’s been over a decade since they left the criminal world entirely, and yet it continues to follow them. it’s not just rocco and natalya’s lives on the line any more - they’ve got kids, kids she’ll do anything to protect (including have her husband killed, if needed). but she’s clever enough to know that a crime of passion will never cut it in a court of law. she encourages rocco to take out a life insurance policy, to protect her and the kids if anything happens. there’s been a lot of unsightly figures hanging around his gallery as of late - he’s noticed it too. she knows that in the case of a murder, a life insurance policy is usually only valid if it was issued more than two years ago. two years and a day later, rocco is found dead in his study - letter opener to the throat. first ruled a suicide, then later ruled not a suicide due to conflicting evidence, then later ruled inconclusive.
the next year, natalya is the picture of the grieving widow. on the outside, she never leaves the house without being top-to-toe in black. on the inside, she’s unspeakably, sickeningly happy. the gardener, pablo, who she’s been seeing in secret for years becomes a permanent fixture of the home. the kids are shipped off to boarding school, courtesy of rocco’s life insurance and a generous donation from the gallery to support their education (it’s what ‘rusty’ would have wanted). trouble doesn’t come again for years, until natalya returns home one day to find her daughter maura in the garden with one of rocco’s former colleagues. he tells her they’re sorry to hear about rocco, and that if there’s anything they can do to help, to let them know - they’ll be keeping an eye on her. she’s never been a religious person, but there’s something about the way that he says it that puts the fear of god in her soul.
two months later, she sold the house rocco built for her, took her two kids and moved to marina heights. they were nouveau riche here, a fresh start, no dirty washing on the laundry line, no mistrusting neighbours who’d heard one too many explosive fights or witnessed shady characters at their doors,  none of the years of scrimping and saving to afford their property. by this point, natalya is well established in the world of luxury real estate. i’ve never seen selling sunset but probs somethin like that. she chose marina to move to because they already had some family ties there (the romanovs)
tw death traumacore drowning drugs.
natalya’s the younger sister of vaughn romanov. it feels good to be back with family - not only is she off the map, but if every one of rocco’s former colleagues tracks her down again, she now has the added security of vince’s team to look out for her and the kids. she feels safer here. will doesn’t like it, but will never likes anything. he’s always been the stranger of her two kids. she doesn’t have the same affection with him as she does with maura.
maura grows closer to rowan. she’s a teenager now, and hanging out with her mom all the time is no longer cool. they grow apart. if she wants a piercing, it’s rowan who takes her. if she wants to drink wine and watch real housewives, it’s rowan she’s doing it with. in maura’s absence, natalya tries harder with will. for the first time, she knows things about his passions and interests. they drink wine have julia roberts thursdays.
a few years after moving to marina, maura is found face down in the pool after a house party to celebrate the end of exams. she’d just been accepted to stanford. they find drugs in her autopsy report. at first, natalya blames rowan. later, she begins to love rowan like a daughter in maura’s place. it’s a weird relationship. will finds the whole thing fucked up, blames his mother for maura’s death, for never enforcing enough discipline on them, and gets a place of his own in tower hill, leaving natalya alone. she’s constantly begging him to come back, but a house that large only ever feels cold and empty to will. he blames natalya for maura’s death because in the years leading up to her death, she wasn’t as close to maura as she was to will.
natalya envied her youth and beauty. she envied her closeness with rowan and adrienne - her sister-in-law, and perhaps the mother maura wishes she had. she spent maura’s teenage years with a bottle in her hand maxing out credit cards on expensive lingerie which meant maura acted out. their whole family has had drug issues. maura was 18 when she died, and despite their relationship being pretty all over the place, natalya’s kind of made her a martyr. her room remains exactly how she left it, walls lined with posters of teenage heartthrobs, dirty underwear still under the bed. no one can ever say a bad word about her or they will face the full force of natalya’s wrath. she drinks iced coffee like its going out of style. she’s full of grief and spite and materialism and cocaine.
she looooooves to harp on about how she never went to college and how everything she got she earned herself through hard work and tenacity, but it also came from several void pre-nups to wealthy (if somewhat sketchy) characters. this woman is also such a white collar criminal like she knows the legal loopholes and she works them. she’d have so many offshore bank accounts. she evades taxes. will she ever suffer the consequences? idk.
history / backstory.
tw: violence, addiction, overdose, murder,,
— natalya was born in volgograd / bолгогра́д, and  grew up in a russian military family who moved around a lot. developed an attachment disorder because of it. she’s very closed off, doesn’t trust easily, can come across as very haughty and hostile, but on the flipside when someone has earned her trust she’d go to fucking war for them.
— moving to schools a lot meant she hardly ever made friends who weren’t kids on the base. her friends were books and her ballet shoes. there wasn’t time for loneliness with the amount of characters she had living inside of her head. she had a close friend at one of the schools she went to when she was 10 - 12, called aleksei, and (possibly because she didn’t have too many other friends) the strength of their friendship was insane. he was also an incredibly smart kid but pretty much her opposite, quiet in all the ways she was loud, reserved in all the ways she was impulsive. the two of them spent most of the school days outcasts, but people left them to their own devices.
— one day, aleksei came into school with train track braces, and a girl in their maths class named anya compared him to the characters jaws from james bond. natalya retaliated by stabbing them in the hand with a compass and she was subsequently transferred to the school on the military base soon after.  despite being a pretty violent and strong-minded child, she’d never had too much trouble with authority figures and her family assumed she would also end up in the military. she had the right personality to be a deputy or a general and showed promise from a young age in terms of agility, tenacity and discipline BUT she only ever viewed her training at the military school as a means to an end. she wanted to graduate school and move to moscow to audition for the bolshoi ballet.
— she started dancing when she was maybe five or six years old. she was one of those kids who always knew what she wanted and never deviated. when asked in class what they wanted to be, most kids would say an astronaut or a princess, but even from as young as seven natalya knew she wanted to dance for the bolshoi ballet. being from a military family, her schooling was inconsistent because she was constantly moving to different locations, and she struggled to keep any friends, but ballet was something that was consistent throughout her teenage years.
— moved to moscow at seventeen to audition for the bolshoi ballet. trained with them for nine months before becoming a chorus dancer in the nutcracker. she lived with five others, also dancers for the bolshoi ballet, and for the next few years she would live, breathe, eat and sleep dance. in her early twenties, natalya became a recurring dancer for the bolshoi ballet company. she was by no means famous, but she became well known in the circles who frequented the opera houses.
— one audience member who she had managed to charm both on and off the stage was moscow-based art dealer (and benefactor of the ballet company) rostislav fyodorov. they met at a charity gala, and again at several vip events in the royal opera house. several years her senior, he was smitten with her, offered to pay her tuition for the ballet school if she agreed to meet with him once a week. she did, they entered into an arrangement and soon she became quite financially dependent on him. she was 21 at the time and studying at the bolshoi ballet school, and he was 44.
— a knee injury meant she had to step back from the company and she hated not having the limelight or enough money to live the life she wanted. she eventually retired from the ballet school at 23 when she agreed to marry her sugar daddy, rocco. she was a trophy wife for a few years and in these years began to realise that as well as working as an art dealer, her husband was loosely involved with criminal activity, mostly in the counterfeiting business, but occasionally laundering money by disguising it through the art galleries donations.
— when natalya became pregnant with their first child he agreed that there’d be no more crooked business because he didn’t want to put their family in jeopardy, but he continued to make counterfeit passports. they move to saint petersberg. will is five and maura is three. when they returned from a holiday to italy one christmas, they found their house had been searched by a former colleague turned rival of rocco’s. they decide to start afresh. they sold the house in saint petersberg and the holiday home in italy, changed their surname and move to the states.
— for several years, things were good. they were the new family in a quaint north carolina suburb, full of mystery and intrigue and constantly smelling of chanel no 5 and cigarette smoke. rocco got a job as a curator in a gallery.  natalya did the grocery shopping in six inch heels and a fur coat. someone eventually tracked their family down and natalya came home from a pilates class one day to find her loving husband rocco with a letter opener lodged in his throat. they had no evidence of forced entry or any leads as to who committed the crime. in the following years, natalya took the role of the grieving widow very seriously. lots of ppl from the neighbourhood who she’d never bothered to get to know brought round sympathy gifts.
— this was the first time  in 3 years of living in irving she actually made any friends in the town outside of yoga instructor. jst bonding with local housewives through grief, love that for her. started going to PTA meetings and being more involved in the community.
— eventually the money started to run out so to keep up with her shopping addiction she had to get a job. she was an uber driver for several years (uber driving a PORSCHE) before getting an administrative role with a lettings company and working her way up.
— she now works part-time in real estate (only part time because she needs her spa days and her me time), mostly selling properties on aquila drive and orion avenue, but she still spends how she did when they were on an art curators salary so is always having bills notices sent to her which she just ignores. her son is worried they’re gonna end up losing everything, but at least rocco had paid off the mortgage before he kicked the bucket. natalya, once a trophy wife, and now a bored suburban widow is pretty  irresponsible with money n feelings. loves to spoil the people she loves. will impulse buy you a car.
headcanons
— mother of william fyodorov (WC!!) and maura fyodorova (deceased). came from nothing and nouveau rich. made her money as a ballet dancer and later became the sugar baby of one of a former drug cartel leader turned art dealer, rocco fyodorov.  was spoiled with blood money and soon became a bouje bitch.  married rocco after she became pregnant with their first child, william
  — when they first went to the states natalya didn't speak a word of english and her kids, who were bilingual, often had to translate for her because she refused to learn english out of spite for at least the first six months. now she is fluent in english having been in irving 20+ years but still speaks with a slight european twang.
— literal cocaine off the dashboard mother, doing the school run totally high. presented this well put together dream woman but there was so much dodgy shit going on behind the scenes and her eldest son will started to resent her for this n their relationship grew fractured.
— the fyodorov family are  literally rebeka's family from elite before i even knew elite existed. rocco and natalya made a fortune through counterfeiting art and money laundering so they could live in a nice white-picket-fence-house with a sea view. rocco has been pushing up the daffodils for years after a trade deal went sour, or that’s how the story goes. no one really knows what happened. there was no finger prints and no signs of forced entry.  since then, natalya has fully committed to the 'grieving widow' role while bedding all of her 25 y-o sons friends.
— natalya was closest to her younger daughter maura, who died a few years ago, after overdosing at a party.  by the time maura died, rocco was already six feet under the sod following a trade deal gone sour. grief stricken n with no one to vent to, natalya uses sex and alcohol as a escape mechanism. kind of washed up and incredibly lonely but you wouldn’t know because her lipstick and eyeliner’s always on point. loves a power suit. dresses mostly in monochrome, emerald green, indigo, navy blue or red. dark wash only.
— when they moved to the states and changed their names, rocco made them both burn their fingerprints off. she wears gloves all the time, mostly lacy ones, because of this. her obsession with gloves started when rocco bought her her first car - a red lamborghini - and she used to buy leather driving gloves to feel like a pin up girl. now she uses gloves to hide what she believes to be the only ugly and disfigured part of her, but in reality it’s barely noticeable at all, she just puts a lot of importance on beauty and youth and is quite a shallow, materialistic person.
— highkey reliant on c0k3. don’t know how her nose hasn’t collapsed tbh but she’s high functioning. always the emotionally unstable hot woman on the balcony swilling a glass of wine with her titties out. borderline sociopathic
— has a vial on a necklace containing a tiny bit of rocco’s blood and he was buried wearing a pendant with some of hers. straight ppl are fuckin gross but she’s not straight she’s actually bi or pan and had an affair with her yoga instructor shortly before her husband died. was she tryna get him out the way or was it genuinely nothing 2 do w her? who knows. not me.
— good at throwing knives. does it to relieve tension. it was a hobby during her military school days and she took it up again as a way of feeling in control of her body when her knee injury meant she had to take a break from dance.
— great at tying knots and very resourceful. as a teenager her room was always full of pulley systems it was some wallace and gromit shit. in her 20s she did a brief stint as an aerial silk performer. she’s currently experimenting with shibari, a japanese type of rope bondage, with a guy she’s sleeping with as a way of exerting control.
wanted plots.
— other middle aged ppl who used to attend her lavish dinner parties that she'd throw w her brother which were basically an excuse to show off all the nice art shit she had from ripping people off back in russia
— women she does yoga with. honestly i would love a milf squad. natalya is the samantha. materialistic, brazen cougar girlboss who says exactly what she thinks. ambitious but also her ambition is to be lazy and lounge around all day in nice underwear while her husband works long hours to pay for her spar days and she fucks the pool boys.
— local people from marina heights who came around with meatloaf and pasta dishes and grandma’s favourite recipe when she first moved to marina after her husband had tragically died and she just spent weeks wearing black and sobbing and thinking fuck i should have been an actress i am wasted on this town
— she is bored of working in real estate and looking for husband number four. if you play a rich middle aged man or your character has a rich middle aged father who lives in marina we cld do a nice plot there when she’s ‘seeing’ their dad. bt it wldn’t be too serious as tbh she loves to spread her wild oats.
— at the same time, she’s a massive mrs robinson cougar n loves seeing younger guys. it’s something about the power dynamics. before rocco died she only ever dated guys who were way older than her and who she could be financially dependent on and now she doesn’t have to worry about paying off the mortgage she’s kind of content to just mess about with whoever she thinks is cute and maybe spoil them with a nice rolex watch every now and then. she misses her wild orgy days and desperately needs to be seen as sexy and attractive and desirable which is probably why she likes fucking younger guys to deny the fact that she’s nearly 50. wld love some hook up plots with anyone who is friends with her son who’s in his mid to late twenties, i might add him as a wanted connection just to have some drama, who knows.
— someone who works in the police / as a detective / as a journalist who is snooping around bcos they think there is something dodgy goin on w her which there absolutely is.
— a jogging group???   found family dynamic / someone who had shitty parents and comes to her for her shitty advice and they do face masks. anyone else who works as a realtor??  friends of her son?? idk i want everything
tht’s it for now. THAT'S IT FOR NOW, SHE SAYS, LIKE THIS ISN'T A 9 PAGE GOOGLE DOC. FUCKIN HELL. hmu if any of this resonates with u or your small possum children, i will feed them grapes out of the palm of my hand xx

I was SUPER worried about my S/I being too overpowered or too over-the-top cause she has a backstory with the cult and has some demonic powers due to it. But after seeing all the powerful OCs and S/Is people have lovingly crafted and the positive receptiom they've gotten, I think me and her are gonna feel right at home in this fandom 💙
Bro, take this is your greenlight to go absolutely balls-to-the-wall nuckin futs with your s/i. Srsly. Please, please, PLEASE make your s/i(s) as OP, gorgeous, extra, plot-central and cringe as you want. They're your chance to reinvent yourself into whoever you could possibly imagine and be anything you could possibly want to be in any situation you could possibly come up with. The only thing limiting you is your own imagination!! 🌈✨✨✨✨
Here's a rundown of my own SF s/is, in case you need some cringy encouragement (CW: general TW, contains spoilers for my goretober events/ 'Meet the Fishers' s/i fics):
S/is for the AUs within my overly-complicated and meta 'Meet the Fishers' selfship AU-
-Penpal!Mitch: An art student at the local community college who became Sals penpal while he was in prison. They fell madly in love and went on the run together (and it inevitably ended Badly 😬)
-Coworker!Mitch: Workaholic worry-wart line cook/ resident cinnamon roll at the Nockfell Diner, where Sal got his first job as a dishwasher. Classic wholesome boy-meets-boy slowburn 💘
-Dealer!Mitch: Asshole hedonist drug dealer who sells 'The Addison Special' to Nockfell residents. Got Sal hooked on the sex-and-drugs lifestyle (it was fun while it lasted 🤷‍♂️)
-Videogame!Mitch: Ultra kawaii dating sim AI in a convenient tamagotchi-clone package. Sal got so obsessed with their 'relationship' that he became a NEET and his fam had to give him an intervention.
-Neighbor!Mitch: Not-so-secretly creepy yandere girl-next-door with social anxiety and self-esteem issues. After stalking her to make sure she wasn't a cult member, Sal and her became a cute/gross yanxyan couple (until he had to try and off her on ritual night oop-)
-Perfect!Mitch: A 'perfect'/absolutely disastrous mix of all of the above, the meta s/i who gets kidnapped by a not-so-fictional-other (THE Sal Fisher) and is slowly driven to cannibalistic insanity after learning the truth about the multiverse (aka Sals story is true, our universe is just another possible reality in Sally Face, and this Mitch is just another 'Mitch' in a long line of Mitchs Sal has found while traveling around the multiverse)
Miscellaneous s/is-
-Werewolf!k.e.w.k.: [insert culty mishap here] turned k.e.w.k. into a werewolf and Sal into a wererabbit. Where could this PoSsIbLy Go????? 🤔🤔🤔 (underdeveloped but still fun, and may pop back in during Easter who knows uwu)
-Default s/i (aka K.E.W.K.): IRL me with a kawaii filter and no concrete backstory, suitable for shoving into any selfship scenarios I'm currently hyperfixated on 👌 (new Meet the Artist coming soon~)
So yeah get cringy and have fun Anon (and feel free to share with us if you'd like to!) 🤗💖
