Do you think you would've enjoyed My Pride more if it hadn't leaned so heavily on "realism" to explain the more gruesome and harsh aspects of its lore/story? One of the main things I enjoy about this comic is that, while you both keep things simple with no accessories on your lions (aside from Periwinkle's collar, which seems to be a plot element), you're also not trying to be painfully realistic. Gives me a Warrior Cats feel when it comes to the "looseness" of the world, if that makes sense?
Most likely not as there was also the complete mishandling of the "disability positive" and "LGBT+ friendly" aspects of the series. Amongst other things... like Hover. Just Hover. lol
It certainly would've been less damaging to its child audiences if it didn't tout itself as being about "actual lion behaviour" while getting 99% of its "facts" completely wrong, because now you have its fans legit believing that - for example - lionesses don't care when their cubs are killed by rogue males when there's footage demonstrating the opposite.
Another thing is that the inclusion of religion to explain these "natural" behaviours was confusing as well as being borderline offensive to those who are religious. Why use a human concept like religion to explain what you perceive to be a lion's "natural" behaviour? Especially the more brutal aspects of said behaviour.
If your whole deal as an atheist is to be scornful as possible towards religion and try and paint it as the source of all issues in the world by doing so with your fictional world: leave that shit be.
So, yeah, the show would've been slightly less problematic without this aspect of its lore but it still would've had the glaring issue of falsely presenting itself as empowering to minorities.
And thank you, anon. I sorta get what you mean. We do try and give a lot of leeway to folks who wish to play about with our worldbuilding, we just draw the line at interacting with humans and getting human trinkets. I hope that Periwinkle's backstory and the whole thing with him being a former pet will make our stance more clear but yeah, humans should leave wild lions be. - RJ
I hc that grian thinks of doc like an older brother so him playing(and breaking) with doc’s red stone is sort of like your little brother playing with your stuff without permission but it causes wars.
re last anon: as a poly man, I would be kinda disappointed if polycules were placed on a pedestal and portrayed as weirdly perfect in comparison to monogamy. Me and my partners have disagreements and arguments but that doesn't mean our bond "isn't as valid" as those who are in monogamous relationships. It's almost on par with portraying LGBT+ individuals as cast iron good guys and the cishets being cartoonishly evil. It's not realistic and it just comes across as toxic positivity. (1/2)
I'm very sorry to hear about what you've experienced, anon, and I hope you and your partners are doing OK. :c
But yeah exactly. We're trying to show a similar thing with Hope and Storm - two lesbians - having a disagreement over their respective cultures. The point of contention doesn't mean that their relationship is automatically "toxic". They're just having a healthy disagreement like all folks in relationships have and they will work through it in time. Because they love each other.
You need to be able to show the flip side of the coin when it comes to these things, otherwise you're just going to veer into the toxic positivity/inspiration porn territory that anon is referring to.
It also feels like a bit of a trap: we want to introduce stereotypes to deconstruct when it comes to our own identities but we're somehow buying into this particular stereotype by simply having it in the wings and waiting to be deconstructed? Doesn't make sense.
There was also always the route of not divulging the information about Red Stone being a cult but we felt it would be better to just keep readers in the loop with our intentions vs. just springing it on them in the middle of the arc. idk something tells me that wouldn't have gone down well. lol
But thank you for your input, anon. We'll try our best. <33 - RJ
Wand of Morgana. My first true melted candle approach to a handle. I used a large red marble and round red stones to add to the dark magical aesthetic. I enjoy how this turned out and had made another one, though white with clear stones. I may make more of this design in the future, centering the differences on my choice of end stone.
