🙤 Unusual OC Associations 🙧
Tagged by @greypetrel---thanks for the tag! This is so cool :) I also might do this for all of them gradually---I enjoy this unique way of thinking about these characters. I added Arianwen under the break here, and I'll likely make a separate post for my bounty of Lavellans. (Also--I'm just putting this out there--I'm adding a Tarot section for mine because I kept thinking about cards for them as I was writing these, but it wasn't part of the original list c: )
Maria Hawke
Seasoning: Something warm and sharp, like ginger or cinnamon. The kind of thing you can add to a hot drink when it's cold outside.
Weather: Snow that falls in big, puffy flakes that make you feel grateful to be inside and warm. Not a storm, but snow that makes everything feel a bit closer than it was before.
Colour: The crimson of heart's-blood, vivid and unmistakable
Sky: When it's very cold and clear outside and there are ice crystals shining in the air. You can only see them when they catch the light, but they're there nonetheless, like clouds scattered at ground level
Magic power: Fire that soothes and sears: a healing heat that is like knocking back a finger of whiskey in the bitter cold, or a blush on a first date.  The agonizing pain of reaching for a pot too fresh from the fire or overlooking the burning candle you've just tipped over in your negligence.
House plant: Aloe vera: you can forget about it, it can withstand too much sun or rain for a time, and as long as it’s cared for every so often it’ll keep taking out the sting of your hurts
Weapon: A staff made of dark wood and bronze, polished to a gloss by decades of use and her father’s hands.
Subject: History—but mostly the salacious or embarrassing bits. Hawke loves a good story, and she definitely tells the bawdy ones when she’s tipsy.
Social media: Despises it. Has a hard time reading tone on the internet. Probably runs a personal blog about her life Kirkwall that she never updates, and rarely responds to comments; she’s too impatient to work to understand a format or website culture.
Make-up product: An anise oil treatment she rubs into her hair before she sleeps at night to keep it glossy and tangle-free
Candy: Chocolate-covered roasted almonds; a study in contrasts, with the sweet, melt-in-your mouth richness of chocolate and the crunchy, faintly bitter and salty almonds.
Fear: Failure; that it was actually her fault that Malcolm and Bethany died, and that it will happen again if she isn’t quick/clever/good enough
Ice cube shape: Perfectly square, rattles nicely when you shake it in a glass
Method of long distance travel: Carriage; she can nap, read, and take in the sights exactly as much as she’d like to.
Art style: Impressionism; trying to capture the fleeting through the suggestion of detail, but ultimately only capturing the impression of what it once was. The finished result is still beautiful, if full of nostalgia.
Mythological creature: A church grim; guardian of its domain and foreteller of death.
Piece of stationery: Handmade paper with pieces of dried rose petal or herbs pressed into the paper itself; slightly ragged around the edges but thick and sweet-smelling.
3 emojis: 👀 💅🏽 😶
Celestial body: The harvest moon on the horizon, golden and full and looking impossibly close despite the distance
Tarot Card: The Hanged Man; Intuition, trials, and self-sacrifice
Tagging: @star--nymph @zenstrike
(and really, anyone who wants to do this--I know these things have the power to make one feel like the kid picked last for dodgeball, but I feel like I'm overstepping if we've never really interacted. Tell me if you want to do these things and I will tag you forever. Really.)
(I put Wen under the break, insert "nobody puts Baby in the corner" joke)
Arianwen Tabris
Seasoning: Oh, salt, hands-down. No elaboration.
Weather: Gathering cumulonimbus on the horizon, with that especially purple-grey tinge to the bottom that tells you it’s going to be a really brutal storm. There are streaks of lightning every now and then, and you can see the streaks where rain has already begun to fall in the distance. (It leaves destruction behind, but come back in a season or a year---the fallen trees grow moss now, and house animals, and the fields have grown back all the greener for the rain)
Colour: Gunmetal grey; dull at first glance but lustrous and brutal nonetheless.
Sky: Red at first light
Magic power: Reopening hidden hurts and forgotten wounds
House plant: Cactus in a terracotta pot. Sometimes you wonder why you’ve still got it on the shelf there, when all it does is poke you and look menacing. But then you look at it after a multiweek depression fog and it’s still there, unwilted, kicking ass.
Weapon: a throwing knife, painted matte-black, all but invisible at night until it hits you
Subject: Applied physics; she likes the practical reality of numbers, and the application of an object in motion can really only benefit her.
Social media: Has a private Youtube account where she saves all her favorite Lockpicking Lawyer videos. If anyone posts a picture or video with her in the background, she hunts them for sport.
Make-up product: Cover up/foundation; if all your scars and tattoos are covered, it’s more difficult for people to identify you
Candy: Rebanaditas (watermelon chili powder candy) (and hey, this is how I found out that lucas powder contained high levels of lead and that’s why it was discontinued?? If you ate a bunch of it like I used to, just a heads-up.)
Fear: Loving someone as much as her father loved her mother (as much as she loved her mother) and losing them anyway.
Ice cube shape: Circle K ice (the little crunchy ones people like to chew on)
Method of long distance travel: Foot. No chance she’ll have to climb off or down from something and get taken by surprise.
Art style: Charcoal sketches; they seem straightforward, even simplistic at first glance, but are capable of unexpected depth and dimension
Mythological creature: Cŵn Annwn; a hound of the Wild Hunt in Welsh lore. Their howls were a death portent that grew quieter rather than louder as they approached. Sometimes regarded as guides to the afterlife.
Piece of stationery: Scrap of paper torn off a larger text for convenience
3 emojis: 🔪 🤨 🐺
Celestial body: Mars
Tarot Card: The Tower; a symbol of abrupt and violent change, for better or worse

Oh I love how in the film Legolas (or is it Aragorn?) says “a red dawn; blood has been spilled this night” BUT in the book Legolas says “It is a red dawn. Stranger things await us by the eaves of the forest. Good or evil, I do not know; but we are called.”
“Good or evil I do not know” being the important part, where Legolas is simply indicating that the sign he’s reading in the sky means “strange stuff is coming”, which jives with the early medieval take on Weird Color or Lights in Sky, more so than the (beloved) film version. If this were Early Modern fantasy story ppl could freak out about comets as signs of evil and also burn some witches — including that guy back in the Shire with the mushrooms, in retrospect he was totally supposed to be a wise-man wasn’t he — but even in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, a light in the sky might indicate a cataclysm, but that was just bc it indicated a change. Comets indicated change. Weird horizon glow indicated change. I have no idea what the fuck the reported double-moon indicated aside from years off my own life whenever I think about it.
(The modern phrase is “red sky at night: sailors delight / red sky in the morning: sailors take warning.” A weather thing, I’ve always assumed??.)

Following the symbolism of the moon that David Jenkins talked about; “Or the full moon is way too big and unrealistic, but in their minds, that’s what it looks like”, I wanted to look at the way the sky represents their mindsets, emotions, and the place their relationship is in.
*As we all already know from David Jenkins’ quote about it, the big full shining moon when they’re having the “you wear fine things well” moment on the ship is them in that honeymoon (literally) phase. Where everything is so romantic and perfect and beautiful. It’s fantastical. It’s a fairytale.
*And then, after they kiss and after Stede doesn’t show up on the dock we see Ed rowing away with the sea and sky backdrop again. It’s dawn, so that romantic vision and the shadow puppets of new love and a maybe relationship are gone and he is looking at the truth (some objective, some subjective). Objective truth: their relationship wasn’t and isn’t a fairy tale and will take work. Subjective truth as Ed sees it: Stede left because he didn’t actually love him the way he thought.
But see, the sun’s barely come up in that scene. And it is overcast. The light you get is breaking through fissures in a blanket of clouds. So a) he’s not seeing things clearly because he’s understandably hurt and emotional, and b) the view that is overtaking him in this post moon is way too big phase is one of gloom and potential storms ahead.
*Then we have Stede! Having had a bit of time and perspective (and a supportive person to talk to) going out onto the sea with sky behind him and it is all golden. Based on the timeline of the day leading up to this scene, I assume it’s dusk, but he goes into the night knowing that the moon may be waning (but still it may wax! what hope!) and it will not be full and larger than life. And again, the clouds play an important role. They aren’t entirely absent, like we see in their moment together on the Revenge. But there are only a few whisps occupying a broad yellow sky beaming all its light onto Stede and his plans and hopes. He’s going into the night and the often unforgiving sea with clear skies and the belief that he can and will make things right.
Like the old very practical saying, “red sky at night, sailors delight. red sky at morning, sailors take warning”, the sky tells us so much of what we should know for what’s happening in the moment and what is to come.

Sailor's weather superstition
Of course superstition doesn't stop here either and to be clear it's only a thing with sailors but also with farmers and so on. But here are a few:
A ring around the sun or moon, means that rain will come real soon
If you see a halo around the moon on a clear night, it could be an indication of bad weather. This is not a spooky prediction, but quite banal science. Although it looks like a ghostly ring, it is really just the light of the moon refracted (or bent) by ice crystals. These ice crystals form the cirrus clouds - the tuft-like clouds we find high up in the sky. These cirrus clouds don't cause rain or storms, but here's the thing: they precede some low pressure areas by a day or two, and low pressure areas bring precipitation.
Tumblr media
(x)
In other words: If you see these ice clouds refracting the light around the moon, it means that cirrus clouds are present, which could indicate a coming storm. also goes with the sun, but please don't look in there, it's not good for your eyes.
Mackerel sky, not 24 hours dry
A mackerel sky looks like a sky full of fish scales. These are cirrocumulus or altocumulus clouds formed by atmospheric waves at high altitudes.  As these high clouds gradually penetrate the sky and the air pressure begins to drop, precipitation associated with the disturbance can be expected in about 6 to 12 hours.
Tumblr media
(x)
A thickening and lowering of cirrocumulus to altostratus or altocumulus in the middle tier is a good sign that the warm or low pressure front has moved closer and rain may begin to fall within less than six hours.
Clear moon, frost soon
Well, that's what they say about clear nights in winter, clear moon, frost soon. And we can be sure to expect a cool morning. This is not untrue, because if there are no clouds, the heat that has been collected during the day can escape from the earth's surface through the non-existent cloud cover and can therefore cause frost in autumn and winter.
Red at morning, Sailors warning; Red at night, Sailors delight
Since I have already made a separate post on this, please forgive me for only attaching the link. https://www.tumblr.com/ltwilliammowett/670757025738866688/red-at-morning-sailors-warning-red-at-night?source=share
Hair curls at high humidity
Human hair is extremely sensitive to changes in humidity. There are even hygrometers that use human hair as a measuring instrument. Your hair can absorb water from the air through hydrogen bonds. Since humid air contains more moisture, a strand of hair can form more hydrogen bonds and you suddenly look like Curly Sue - of course not, but your hair can frizz.
Feeling a storm in your bones
Oh, every old slat is there, and will certainly stand on deck all the time and tell you from their aching bones and joints that the weather is going to be bad. Well, some people are sensitive to the weather and rheumatics and people with arthritis often react more sensitively to temperature and weather fluctuations (I can tell you a thing or two about that). This is because their body fluids are in a constant equilibrium with the ambient air pressure. So when the barometer drops - like an approaching storm - your tissues can swell, irritating nerve endings and causing you additional pain. However, not everyone is like this and therefore rheumatics are not to be used as living barometers.
Thermometer cricket
No thermometer on board for once ? No problem, grab a cricket, preferably the ecanthus fultoni, aka the thermometer cricket.
Tumblr media
(x)
Because as soon as the temperature rises, the animal chrips much faster, when it drops, it's the other way round. But not only that, you can even determine the temperature exactly. The chirp rate is counted in the time of 13 seconds and then the number 40 is added. This value corresponds almost exactly to the temperature in Fahrenheit.

A quick one! sorry for the messiness folks! but I simply couldn't end/start the year without at least ONE small thing. (And the other thing that was SUPPOSED to be posted today isn't anywhere near finished)
I'll draw something for this a bit later, but for now, I hope you enjoy this small piece!
(Didn't know where to start it so I just wrote the main part and end, enjoy!)
...
.....
The container shot high into the sky, leaving a smoky streak in it's wake.
When it reached it's highest point, Wild detonated the bomb within the container.
For a moment, nothing, then, as the container blew apart, the sky bloomed into a shower of sparkling light.
(y/n) gasped loudly as glittery streaks of gold and white flew across the night sky.
Even though she had experienced many fireworks shows before, this one was absolutely breathtaking in its beauty. Her eyes lit with delight. reflecting the sight of the shimmering lights exploding over the vastness of the dark sky.
For a brief moment, she wasn't in Hyrule, nor back home. she was in a place that only ever existed during moments like this. Entranced by the lights and sounds, she could only stand there, hands clasped together against her chest, feeling her heart pounding as container after container followed the first one. She felt like a little girl again, sitting on her father's shoulders as she watched her first show.
Remembering how much she screamed in glee and pointed at her favorite ones. Her family cheering along with her.
Her homesickness went away as she was swept by her nostalgic memories, yet also stayed at the same time. What day was it back home? How was her family, her friends? Were they celebrating the holidays yet? if so, were they seeing fireworks too? Maybe, a deep part of her hoped, they were watching their own fireworks at the same time.
She hoped so.
It made her sad to think about. But happy, because this was simply another memory she was making. So many things to tell her loved ones when she found a way home.
She doesn't know what the future held for her, but she hoped there were more happy memories for everyone.
A hand rested itself on her shoulder, she looked to her right and saw Sky smiling gently at her.
"We hope you like it." He said quietly, barely heard amongst the explosions.
She returned his smile with one of her own, reaching up and clutching his hand with hers, and turned back to the beautiful display.
"I love it." she said in return, her voice cracking a bit. Her eyes welling up with tears from the overwhelming emotion she felt.
She was so touched by this. They didn't have to do this for her, but they did and she couldn't thank her friends enough.
She could hear Wild and Wind laughing loudly as they continued to set off the rest of the containers, The sailor manipulating the winds to gather the glittering items from the sky and sweeping them up into shapes and swirls at Wild's loud commands.
Time and Twilight were sitting on the grass just ahead of her, silently admiring the view, Hyrule and Four to the side, pointing at shapes that caught their eye.
She could hear Warriors loudly complain to Legend to not stand so close to him, with the veteran sarcastically throwing back his own retort.
A small gathering of friends, and a small celebration for the sake of good memories.
She smiled widely, content to enjoy this moment, only to gasp and laugh in glee as one last container shot higher then all the others, and then it stopped, shooting and fell back down towards the earth. It took a few seconds of silence before it exploded, showering the entire forest in brilliant shades of red, yellow, silver, orange and blue. A sight that could never be replaced by anything else.
And then it happened again, and again, and again until she felt dizzy with the endless stream of lights bursting overhead. The explosions kept going and going for what seemed like hours until she could no longer count the number of explosions or the amount of different types of firework colors. All she knew was that it was beautiful.
Moments like this were worth remembering.
She was so happy to be a part of this memory.
---
"She asleep?" Warriors asked, gathering what dragon scales he found on the ground.
"Out like a light," Twilight answered, a large smile on his face. "All that excitement wore her out."
"I told you she would love it!" Wild exclaimed proudly, high-fiving Wind.
"That you did," Time nodded in agreement. "It was a beautiful display."
"Especially the last one!" Hyrule sighed happily as he recalled it. "It was completely unexpected, but I guess that's what made it so memorable."
"Worth the noise." Legend threw in.
"Yeah but gathering all those star fragments and dragon scales was a pain, so don't expect another show anytime." Wild groaned , rolling his shoulders. "I'm pretty sure I'm never gonna see half of those star fragments again with how far they scattered."
"Why do you have so many of them anyway?" Warriors asked, handing the scales he gathered back to Wild.
Wild snatched them from his hands and huffed. "None of your business, that's why."
Twilight chuckled and messed with Wild's hair, "Having regrets cub?" Wild brushed his hand off his head.
"Not on your life."
"Though, I do think we should all follow (y/n)'s example and get some sleep." Four yawned, stretching out. "It is rather late and I don't think she's the only one wiped out."
Warriors looked at Wild, "Think we'll find more of your things tomorrow?"
Wild scoffed. "In this large place? Absolutely not."
"Then it's time to get some sleep everyone, who has first watch?" As Time said that, he motioned for everyone to head into the cabin to gather their sleeping supplies.
Wild stood up, yawning himself before he noticed Wind looking deep in thought.
"Rupee for your thoughts?" Wind hummed, tapping his chin.
"I'm just thinking..." Wild waited for him to continue but Wind stayed silent.
"...and?" Wind thought a moment more before sighing.
"It's just...where did that container come from?"
"Hm?"
"We only made like...12 of them. so when did you have time to make the 13th one...?"
Wild looked at him, eyes as confused as his were.
"I thought you made it." Wind blinked.
"I didn't make that one." They stood there, both trying to figure out
Who could've made that container. Neither having any idea who it could've been.
"...Nope.." Wind shook his head and started to make his way to the cabin.
Wild was even more confused, "huh?"
"I didn't make it. You didn't make it. and we both know the others didn't make it. So I'm gonna say nope, and go to bed."
"...but aren't you curious?"
"Nope." With that Wind went back into the cabin, leaving Wild throw off.
He stared off after him, trying to wrap his head around it.
He decided he would try to figure it out when he woke up the next morning.
Or not.
...Maybe Wind has the right idea.
...
------
As everyone gathered inside to get ready for bed, a light giggle was heard amongst the wind and leaves.
A figure sitting on one of the tall branches of the trees, kicking their legs and watching the light of the campfire slowly dim and listening to the faint noise of the others inside.
"Hee hee~"
Being tossed up in the air and back down onto their hand was one of Wild's star fragments a small bag to their side showed a decent amount of dragon scales and fragments inside. Their quiet laughter emphasized by the smile carved on the pumpkin sitting on their head.
"Silly~ Messy Sillies~"
And as quickly as they made themselves known to the trees, they faded away, the bag left behind. the star fragment that they had been tossing in the air falling to the ground below, their light giggles melding with the rustling leaves. Gone before anyone knew they were there.
"Hee Hee~"
...
(Happy New Year everyone!)

I’m not sure how this works exactly (plz let me know if this is wrong) but I’d be reallllllyyyyyyy excited to ready anything you’ve got!
I was hoping for a song request for Billy- Cruel Summer Taylor Swift
Something about the bridge just screams Billy to me
Butttttttt if TS isn’t your style I have a few other ideas
- Coming Down- Halsey, Hate That I Love You- Rihanna, Beautiful Mess- Diamond Rio
@pikachuondrugs thank you so much for sending this request in. You actually picked a Taylor Swift song that I like, she’s normally not my cup of tea but there are a few that I like and Cruel Summer is one of them.
Thank you for following me and being a part of my celebration. I hope you like what I did here ♥️
Safe with You

Photos are not mine. They are courtesy of Pinterest/Google.
Pairing: Billy Russo x F! Reader
Warnings: Drinking, tipsy reader, maybe a swear word? (I don’t remember, is that bad? 😆) fluffy bunnies and unicorns, love confessions
Word Count: 2.8k-ish
Summary: You meet your friends for a girls night out and have a little too much to drink so you call your boyfriend to come pick you up.
A/N: Loosely inspired by the bridge of Cruel Summer by Taylor Swift, book quotes from The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien. It’s one of my favorite books and one I think Billy would love also ♥️
As you watched the sun get lower in the sky toward the horizon, the colors of the sky turned shades of fiery red and orange with the colors of lilac and pink bordering the fluffy white clouds.
You recalled that saying “Red sky at night, sailor’s delight. Red sky at morning, sailors take warning” and if there was any truth to that saying, it would be a nice day for your trip to the beach with your boyfriend tomorrow but tonight was about girls night out.
Your vanity sat next to the window so you could watch the sun go down while getting ready for the night. It had been awhile since you had seen your two best friends so you were excited about dinner and drinks tonight but it was your fault you hadn’t seen them in a couple of months.
They said they understood. “Hey, you have a really HOT reason for not hanging out with us at all this summer! It really is ok, y/n because he is super-HOT!” Sabrina had said.
She wasn’t wrong, Billy was incredibly handsome. They had only seen pictures of him, they hadn’t met him yet but they’d love him…just like you did but he didn’t know that yet.
You didn’t know it at that moment, but he would know exactly how you feel about it by the end of the night.
**********
The month of May had been unusually warm and that particular day you hadn’t even planned on going anywhere but it was such a nice day, you decided to go for a walk to get a cup of coffee and stop at the bookstore on your way back.
The bright early afternoon sun warmed the tops of your shoulders as you walked the crowded city sidewalks. People in business attire hustled past you, trying to get back to their offices after enjoying their lunch break outside.
You were thankful to be off from work on such a beautiful day.
Because it was such a nice day, you put on a flowy white tank top, jeans and put your hair up in a messy bun. You weren’t going to be out very long so you put minimal makeup on before leaving the house and headed out.
Sure, there were plenty of genres you enjoyed reading but you kept coming back to the classics which is where he first laid eyes on you. With your back turned, you sensed someone behind you before he said,
“And I thought I was the only nerd who still read the classics.” His voice was soft with a slight New York accent and you could tell he was smiling even before you turned around.
When you turned around, you saw probably the most handsome man you’d ever seen. He was dressed in a designer suit with dark brown hair, a well-groomed beard and eyes as dark as freshly turned soil. You suddenly felt underdressed even though you were just in a bookstore.
“What do ya got there?” He asked with a perfect smile stretched across his lips.
He gently touched your wrist to pull the books you were holding closer so he could see and heat rose to your cheeks as his long fingers wrapped around your wrist.
“The Count of Monte Cristo and The Things They Carried. Both fine choices.” He extended his arm and hand for you to shake. “Maybe I should have introduced myself first before snooping around your book choices, Billy Russo.”
You shook his hand, trying not to blush in the process. “It’s nice to meet you Billy Russo, I’m y/n. I’ve never met anyone else who’s read The Things They Carried before. My copy is old and falling apart so I needed a new one.” You said.
“The bad stuff never stops happening: it lives in its own dimension, replaying itself over and over.” Billy quoted. “Another quote I love is…’They carried all they could bear, and then some, including a silent awe for the terrible power of the things they carried.’”
And at that moment, you were smitten with him.
**********
That was three months ago, you had spent your free summer nights going out on the most romantic dates with him and he really knew how to show you a good time but he wasn’t just a handsome face.
Billy was sweet, funny, well-read, smart and strong but also…guarded, stubborn, jealous and a little possessive. But with all his faults, Billy always made you feel safe which he said was the best compliment he could ever receive.
He was a little disappointed he wouldn’t get to see you tonight but he knew you hadn’t seen your friends in awhile.
A text from him came through while you were getting ready for the night.
Have fun tonight, beautiful. Be safe.
Just a text from him brought a smile to your face, you made sure to reply. Billy would get nervous if you didn’t text back.
Thank you, handsome. I will.♥️
As the evening sun was setting, it cast long shadows on the ground as you walked to meet your Uber, you were ready for an exciting night.
After fending off some rather aggressive bar patrons, three karaoke songs, and a shot of tequila, you and your friends were able to catch up with each other’s lives but mostly laugh with each other and they wanted to hear more about Billy.
“Is he good in bed?” Sabrina asked.
Your jaw dropped which turned into a loud burst of laughter.
Valerie slapped her on the shoulder. “That’s a dumb question! Do you really think y/n would still be with him if he wasn’t?”
You shrugged your shoulders and nodded. “Val’s right, I wouldn’t have stuck around if he wasn’t.” You said, taking a sip of your drink.
“Do you love him?” Asked Sabrina, changing the tone of the conversation for a minute.
The corners of your mouth dropped and your lips pressed together in a straight line before letting out a long exhale. You gave them both a warm smile before saying, “I do…I really do but I haven’t told him yet. I’m scared to but hey if we keep drinking, that could change. Cheers!!”
The three of you reminisced of when you all used to work together, you missed it but you needed a job that paid better, they eventually left too, also maybe it wasn’t a good idea for three best friends to work together. You were convinced your boss threw a massive party after the three of you left.
“…Even separating us didn’t work, remember?” You said through fits of laughter.
After a few more rounds and many, many laughs later, the three of you decided to call it a night but you felt a little too drunk to even get in an Uber and get safely home.
“H-hey, w-will you guys ride in the Uber with me? I might fall asleep before I get home.” You asked with slightly slurred speech.
Sabrina and Valerie exchanged a look with raised eyebrows like they were hatching a plan telepathically.
“Whyyyyyyy don’t you have your boyfriend pick you up?” Valerie asked, exchanging another look with Sabrina. “We’ll wait with you until he gets here.”
“G-good idea!” You exclaimed, pulling your phone out of your purse and pushing the “call” button.
Billy answered on the second ring.
“Hey sweet girl. Everything ok?” He asked.
“Hi handsome! I-I really h-hate to bother you buuuuuut, can you come get me? I’m afraid I might fall asleep in the Uber.” You asked.
Val leaned in to the phone. “Hiiiiii Billy!!!” She yelled into the phone followed by a cackle.
Then you started laughing. “Oh my god, what is wrong with you?!” You said with your mouth away from the phone, Billy could still hear you though by the way he was chuckling.
“Baby, just text me where you are and I’ll be there as soon as I can, ok?” He said.
“Shut up, guys!” You said, followed by more laughter. “Ok, b-baby. I’ll t-text you as soon as I get off…he-he…get off.”
“Real mature, y/n!” Sabrina yelled.
Billy tried to stop himself from laughing but couldn’t, all he managed to get out was, “I’ll see you soon, beautiful.” And he hung up.
You were waiting for about 20 minutes when the balmy summer air hit the back of your arms. You were facing away from the door when Billy walked in and your friends pointed him out that he was there.
“Somebody is here for youuuuuuu!” Val exclaimed.
You turned around and watched him walk over to you, he had on jeans and a black t-shirt.
Sabrina “whispered” in your ear. “How is he even hotter in person?”
“You’re n-not w-whispering, ya know.” You giggled. “Billy, these are my friends, Valerie and Sabrina.”
Billy flashed his perfect smile at them as he wrapped his arm around your waist. “Nice to meet you ladies, I’d love to chat with you more but I really should get her home.” He said.
Valerie shooed the two of you out of the bar. “Go on, get outta here you crazy kids. You guys would have beautiful babies, by the way.” She said.
“What?!” You yelled.
“What?! Who said that?!” She said. “Ok, goodnight! Love youuuuuu! Nice to finally meet you, Billy!”
“You too.” Billy said with a warm smile, opening the car door. “Wanna lay down in the back, baby?”
“Y-yesssss, I do.” You slurred.
Billy had been driving for about 10 minutes when he asked, “You ok back there, beautiful?”
You sat up and stuck your head in between the front seats. “Oh y-yeah, I’m good!”
Billy just smiled and shook his head back and forth. “That’s good, baby. I’m glad you had fun tonight. I know you haven’t seen them in awhile but that’s my fault. I’ve been monopolizing your time and I’m sorry.” He said.
“But I love spending time with you, Billy. Actually, I-I t-told my friends a s-secret earlier.” You whispered. “Sssshhhhhh!”
Acting surprised, Billy chuckled and responded with, “Oh really? And what secret did you tell them, baby?”
“Well I can’t tell youuuuuu, cuz what if?” You trailed off and suddenly tears welled up in your eyes.
Concerned, Billy asked, “What if what, y/n? Ya know there’s only room for one emotionally stunted person in this relationship and that’s me. Tell me, baby.”
A single tear streaked down your cheek and Billy wanted nothing more than to catch it but he was driving and he couldn’t. You wiped the tear away and whispered, “I-I t-told them that I’m in l-love with youuuuuu.”
You thought you saw the corners of Billy’s mouth curl up into a sly smile in the reflection of the rearview mirror.
“I knowwww, I know you p-probably don’t feel the same way…Imma go back to sleep now, night night. Just shove me out onto the sidewalk when you get to my apartment. This is so embarrassing, I shouldn’t have said anything.”
Billy never did relationships but he couldn’t stay away from you. It was easy with you and it was the first time in a long time, or ever, that someone had told Billy he was loved.
You felt the car come to a stop and the engine turn off, you must be home.
“How ya doin’, beautiful? Can ya walk?” Billy asked sarcastically.
You narrowed your eyes at him as you sat upright and he winked at you in the rearview mirror.
“Yes Billy, I can walk. I’m d-drunk but I’m not THAT drunk.” You said.
Billy exited the car and opened the door to the back seat for you. His hands were chilled from the air conditioning and felt cold against the warm skin of your wrists, more than likely because of the alcohol. You felt his lips plant a gentle kiss on your forehead which made you smile and caused your stomach to flutter.
He really did care about you.
“C’mon baby, let’s get you to bed.” He said softly against your ear.
Swaying a little as you walked toward the entrance of your building, you grabbed a hold of his t-shirt and held onto him for balance, with his hand wrapped around your waist and guiding you into your building.
Once inside your apartment, you tossed your purse and keys onto the table and headed straight for your bedroom, leaving Billy to lock the door behind him.
He knew for the most part you were ok to change by yourself and get into bed so he went into the kitchen to get you some water and pain reliever.
Listening carefully, he heard the water from the bathroom sink running. You were brushing your teeth and washing the makeup off of your face. Billy found you curled up on your side, nestled under the blanket, waiting for him to come in.
“Ah, ah…before you close those beautiful eyes of yours, sit up and take these.” He said in a slightly scolding tone.
“Alright, alright. At ease, soldier. You don’t hafta yell at meeeeee. But it is pretty sexy when you do.” You said with a half-smile on your face.
Billy chuckled as he watched you swallow the two pills he gave you. He sat on the edge of the bed and moved a stray hair away from your eyes while you inched closer to him.
With your hand resting against his cheek, you started to gently brush his beard with your thumb, he kissed the heel of your hand and gave you a warm smile.
“Thank you for coming to get me tonight, Billy.” You said softly.
“Anything for you, baby. Now get some sleep, ok?” He said.
Nodding, you easily rested your head against your pillow and immediately felt your eyes get heavy and the last thing you saw before falling asleep was Billy’s handsome face smiling at you and felt him gently drawing circles on your back with his long slender fingers.
Yes, you were very much in love with him.
**********
Rays from the early morning sun shone into your bedroom, warming the side of your face that wasn’t resting against Billy’s chest.
He stayed with you…he didn’t have to do that, but it warmed your heart that he did. Lifting your head slightly to look up at him, you thought about everything you said to him last night. You didn’t have any regrets, you meant it when you told him you were in love with him.
“Good morning, beautiful.” Said Billy, still with his eyes closed.
“Hey there handsome. You stayed with me.” You said.
His agile fingers danced up and down the exposed skin of your arm. “Of course I did, sweet girl. So, did you really mean what you said last night?” He asked.
You propped yourself up on one arm and gazed into his endless brown eyes. “Yes I did, Billy. I am very much in love with you. That wasn’t exactly how I wanted to tell you for the first time but, well, I can’t take it back…and I don’t want to take it back. I-I love you Billy.”
Billy had a stoic look to his face for a brief moment which felt like time was standing still waiting for a reaction before a warm smile crept to his face and his lips collided with yours.
Suddenly, you were pinned underneath him as he kissed you aggressively, all teeth and tongue before tracing his lips down the hollow of your throat and the side of your neck. The bristles of his beard tickled your skin which caused you to giggle and playfully call out his name.
He stopped and gazed down at you with slight sadness in his beautiful dark brown eyes that looked like two pools of black ink. Billy closed the gap between your bodies so he could rest his forehead against yours.
“I love you too y/n, very much. Ya know, I find myself staring at your picture when you’re not around, I smile when I see that you text me, I love how you say hi to every single dog we pass walking down the sidewalk, you make me laugh which isn’t easy to do, and I probably fell in love with you when you told me that…that you felt safe with me.” He said as he gently pressed his lips to yours.
His words sent shivers down your spine causing you to let out a long exhale.
“Billy, I never feel safer than when I’m with you.” You said with a warm smile, cupping his cheek.
“You’ll always be safe with me, baby.” And he kissed you again. “How do you feel this morning?” He asked.
A big smile played across your lips, a feeling of warmth flowed over your heart, it was beating so rapidly you thought it might beat right out of your chest, and you desperately did not want that feeling to go away.
Yes, you loved him.
“Never better, my love. Never better.”

molybdomancy
Tumblr media
Probably about as far back as humanity has been able to think beyond the immediate, there have been different ways to try to predict what's coming in the future. Sometimes this is possible by paying attention to patterns.
Red sky at night, sailor's delight.
Red sky in the morning, sailor, take warning.
These days we know its atmospheric pressure that tints the skies and the science behind the old mariner's rhyme. Back then, they just knew that seeing it meant a pattern was in place and should be heeded. Just because you don't understand why a pattern happens, doesn't mean recognizing the pattern is foolish.
Unfortunately for humanity, there are a lot of things that happen over the course of a year that have no pattern, or even warning, to recognize. That doesn't mean humans don't still want to be warned about them.
Enter molybdomancy.
Molybdomancy is one of many attempts at foretelling the future.
The way it goes is like this. A piece of lead is put into the bowl of a spoon and melted over a candle. Once the lead is entirely liquid, its quickly dropped into a bowl of cool water. The lead quickly re-hardens and the shape it takes, and sometimes the shadow that shape casts on the wall, predict the future.
The practice itself dates at least as far back as the Romans and Greeks. It was a part of older Jewish folk-medicine that was used when an illness was attributed to fright as well. The shape the lead took would resemble the creature that had caused the scare.
Fast forward to modern New Year's Eve traditions.
In Finland, the tradition is called uudenvuodentina. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland its called bleigießen. In any of these countries, just before the new year, you can buy kits that will provide you with little ingots of lead, the spoon to melt it in and a list of explanations of what the shapes could be predicting. Well - not the lead anymore. That, it turns out, can be pretty dangerous to your health. Instead, these days, the kits come with either tin or wax. It's not the material, its the shape the water reveals that matters. So, somewhere in the midst of all the celebrations, people can take a little time out of their party to try to see if they can catch a glimpse of their future on new year's eve.
Here are a few of the meanings the shapes could take:
Ball, Kugel (ball) = Glück rollt auf dich/luck will roll your way
Degen (epee, sword) = Mut zum Risiko/risk-taking courage
Frosch (frog) = Lottogwinn/lottery win
Gitarre (guitar) = Wunsch/wish
Fuchs (fox) = schlau, Eigenengagement/smart, self-initiative
Kelch (chalice) = glückliche Zukunft/happy future
Maske (mask) = überall gern gesehen/welcome everywhere
Not enough?
Try here and here. No. Of course, they don't agree. That's part of the fun of fortunate telling.

Today's post is sponsored by @damatris who commented on the new year's traditions around the world post with a couple traditions I hadn't heard of before. They were delightful and I had to make a full post for at least one of them.

Kiitos, @damatris!

M9 as Night Vale cold openers
Yasha
Absence makes the heart grow fonder, fear makes the heart grow louder, and death makes the heart grow flowers.
Mollymauk
Let me be brief. Let us all be brief. Let us briefly be.
Beau
The optimist says the glass is half full. The pessimist says the glass is half empty. It is only the truth-seeker who wonders, 'Why is the glass there? Why is there water all over the floor? Why is it covering every other surface of the house? Who -- or what -- is doing this to us?'
Caleb
Do not bite the hand that feeds you. Grab it first. Take the keys. Set yourself free. Then bite the hand, and run.
Veth
Bananas are hardly that slippery. But watch your step anyway.
Fjord
Red skies at night. Sailors delight. Red sky at night. The sailors are howling and laughing. The sailors begin to surround us and the night sky is so very red.
Jester
But don't you see? You never needed anything else. The weird was within you the whole time.
Caduceus
Just act natural. Just act like all of nature. Just act like the entire cycle of life and death and change and rebirth.
Kingsley
I know you are, but what am I? What am I? What am I. What AM I?
Essek
The sun is bright, the moon is irrelevant, and we are light and light and light. We're light. Think back, look forward, listen timelessly.
And as a bonus because I liked these too much to leave them out:
Lucien
A lonely heart, a wandering eye, an empty stomach, a shoulder to cry on — this is what makes us, us.
The Tombtakers
Get the body you've always wanted. We know where it's buried, and can lend you a shovel.
