Twilight Princess: the Resistance

In the game Twilight Princess, there is a group that meets in Telma’s bar, one that clearly knows each other very well and has for a long time. The bar they meet in has a connection to the castle, the group has clear and obvious disdain for the Hylian soldiers, and most notably of all, is willing and able to break into castle grounds with fairly elaborate weapons in order to aid Link in the end-game.

This is standard video game fare, but I want to go into a few other details about the storytelling that have always leaned me towards the group having a much more active past in which the resistance they had to the Twilight threat is a footnote on a much greater accomplishment: that of regicide.

[Note: I am discounting all comics canon in this analysis, as I do not have easy access to it, nor familiarity. This is based off in-game dialogue and visuals only, with some reference to Ocarina of Time.]

Also this is stupidly long and I'm about to post something even longer, so I guess uh, get yourself a drink. (1400 words)

The first necessary detail for that is this: Princess Zelda is the only member of her family we ever see. When Zant invades the throne room, Zelda is standing at the thrones alone, surrounded by guards, dressed in her formal regalia and wielding a sword. Nobody ever speaks of her parents, or questions her right to speak for the people of Hyrule. By every signal present, she is sole ruler and has been for long enough nobody questions it.

She is also very young: this isn’t usual either unless there has been recent, violent conflict or plague, and there’s no real evidence of there being a large war with an outside party or expensive civil unrest. Therefore, if something did kill her parents, it was likely targeted against them alone, or she had extraordinarily bad luck.

The second massive detail is the behaviour of the Resistance group in general. Notably, most group members are much older than Link or Zelda. Rusl has young kids, but he looks much older – more like 40-50 than 20-30. Telma and Auru are in that age range too. While Shad looks young, he talks old, so he could simply be a well-preserved 40 rather than merely a scholarly 20. Ashei definitely appears to be closer to Link’s age, but she speaks openly of her father as though he was involved before her, so perhaps she is here in his stead.

Notably, while there has clearly been time passing while the Twilight overlay the population and people were capable of moving around and doing things, there’s no real sense of it being a long time. Queen Rutela sent her son away, and he became suddenly and violently ill but none of the Zora are worried in a way that implies an absence of more than a few days. Impaz was secluded in the town but not long enough she reacted afraid for her life from lack of food or water. Others, again, are worried for lost family but not convinced of their deaths – a sentiment that, especially about children, would escalate quite quickly even in pre-modern times.

If that’s the case, how long has the Resistance had to set things in motion? If it was a new thing, in the face of the Twilight, the people involved would not be reacting so smoothly. But if it’s simply reconnecting with old allies, then that re-connection would be rapid. Rusl left Ordon village to look for the children: he appears to have gone straight to the Resistance rather than deviate from his path to follow likely leads. Why would he prioritize that? Only if he knew that was his best chance to chase multiple leads at once.

Only if he knew and expected them to be there, reachable quickly from Telma’s bar.

The Resistance does appear to have extremely rapid communication, especially for this time period. The group is already not only reintegrated but aware of current events and actively investigating them per expertise. They act as though they’ve never actually disbanded, in fact. Telma instantly tries to recruit Link upon his arrival, almost as if she was expecting him...

Almost as if Rusl might’ve told her to expect the boy’s arrival in Castletown in the recent future, possibly before this all began...? He was planning to send Link to the Castle in his stead after all.

I have another post about taxation that will likely be posted after this, but its stated that Rusl “made” the sword that’s going to be presented to the Royal Family from Ordon, the Village. This is not what a village would normally send in taxes, but it might be something they might send specially if the castle wants an extra gesture of good will from the village, possibly from a specific villager.

Possibly from someone they suspected was involved in recent activity they wanted to keep an eye on. A man who can make swords and armour (he’s the only one with a solid, defensive helmet we see, after all) is quite valuable in arming a small group of vigilantes, after all.

There is mention of “prolonged wars” that destroyed the guardians of the royal family to which Impaz belonged. That does not sound like a history of a royal family that has historically been kind or well-liked. We never get any specific sense of what caused these conflicts, but some things can just become entrenched power struggles over time. The Resistance are all incredibly disparaging towards the guards, who are useless within the city but around the castle are quite persistent and very solid. (Especially if you include that they are even proof against speedrun strats...)

In addition, Zelda’s royal garb skews incredibly militant. She is obviously trained in sword-fighting, or she’d have never grabbed a weapon when the throne room was invaded; the walls may be open but that offers as much opportunity for her to flee as it does defence, especially at the height at which this room is placed in the castle. While we do see two large cannons in use, and one hand-held cannon among the resistance after the fact, she is still so very high that’s not a real threat.

(Would this absolutely require magic to make the castle stable? Yes. Is that plausible in this context? Also yes.)

Lorewise, the previous game (Ocarina of Time) also has intense implications of prolonged conflicts: a civil war ten years before the story begins, evidence of torture by the Sheikah at the King's command, another war that ended in Ganondorf’s imprisonment by sages. Sages, who were clearly deeply distressed by everything going on, which implies the war had gone horribly for Hyrule and they were acting out of desperation. The Ocarina of Time script is an isolated language that never repeats which has its own implications of invasion and attempts to wipe out the history before it... (Changing a script on people has the “benefit” of forcibly making the literate population suddenly illiterate towards documentation you don’t want them to have access to, after all.)

If the people had become used to distrusting their rulers, and their rulers became used to suppressing dissent with violence, the cycle can continue for quite some time with periods of ebb and flow. And if the people have become used to the idea that you have to simply kill the King before things will change... Well, you’d have reason to keep a very close eye on them in the future, now wouldn’t you? You'd have reason to keep a group prepared to address matters quickly and finally when required.

In brief, there are a great many things that push me towards reading the Resistance as something that formed not in response to Zant, but in response to the government under which they lived.

Twilight Princess is a very settled era in the Zelda timeline. There are wide fields that clearly see a great deal of travel, elaborate and well-maintained bridges, multiple small villages in close proximity to each other that have walls but not elaborately defended ones. This world is not currently in serious distress. The Twilight War appears to be the worst thing to happen to the villages in some time.

It is not, however, particularly disruptive to the city. The people there are defensive, and strange, and alive in wonderful and interesting ways. We have a cursed rich man, a questionably ethical preacher, guards of both the poorly behaved and well-behaved variety, in which the well-behaved are strongly concentrated on the castle... As if the royal family expects to need strictly monitored guards at the castle.

As if there was perhaps something recent that caused it.

As if this isn't the first time the Resistance has broken into castle grounds in the recent past.

Perhaps Rusl had reasons to want someone who wasn’t him to present the sword to the young Queen, after all.

Chronicling The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - The Impact of the Player's Actions, and Making the World a Better Place

I just have to gush a bit more on the topic of player impact and how the world around you is shaped by your actions.

This part of the game was one of my absolute favorites. Meeting the Hero's Shade. Despite Skyward Sword taking the advancements in wiggle technology to give Link a flurry of new moves, I feel like Twilight Princess made learning and using these moves feel more fun and emotionally important to the player. While I never knew until now just how many of those moves came from Twilight Princess, and just how many never made it past Twilight Princess, while I was playing I actually felt more motivated to use these moves because they had been taught to me by a loving teacher.

You see, the first time I met the Hero's Shade, I was moved by his story. Once a Hero, now forgotten by time, with no heir or apprentice to pass his skills onto. You feel for this guy. All he wants in his afterlife is to give something to you — how could I possibly say no?

But as I did this sidequest to acquire his skills, I cared a little less about the situational and overtly flashy moves he taught me (some of them have been very useful, though not all), and I started to care more about the Hero's Shade itself. It's one of those moments where I have to tell myself "it's just a video game" as I tear up a bit, reading his heartfelt relief in having passed on his final lessons. Especially that line:

"At last, I have eased my regrets"

This quote hit me hard in the feels, as one might say. This has been one of those tiny moments; a narrow slit in an otherwise locked door; a glimpse into and beyond a virtual character, where I got to feel a supreme understanding of a whole character's being. One where the controller in my paws ceases to exist. My screen is no longer a barrier, and the low res textures and sharp models of a game older than some who might be reading this. That's where I feel truly connected to this beautiful world that these talented, passionate people have created, and to the character on my screen at that time.

This is a feeling that's been all too foreign to me since last I played Majora's Mask. I'm a huge Elder Scrolls fan, and have spent countless hours in each game. And despite all being titled roleplaying games, I've never felt this way about any of the characters I've seen in games like Skyrim or Oblivion.

Unlike these games that are often lauded for their immersion and roleplaying prowess, Twilight Princess truly immersed me. You may only have one role to start with, and you may only have one role to grow into. But damn it, if this doesn't do a better service to traditional roleplaying games than Skyrim could ever do. Because the magic of roleplaying games that studios seem to have forgotten since the times where tabletop was all you had, is in how the player can impact the world, and change it for better or for worse. To know that who you choose to help isn't meaningless, and that helping is worth doing.

( Maybe I just didn't receive as much praise as a kid as I really needed, so being told so bluntly how appreciative characters are for what I did for them hits me especially hard.)

I'm nearing the end of my playthrough for Twilight Princess, and I already have so many fond memories. So many beloved characters that I've walked alongside, and now genuinely care for. I want to see them have a better life. I know it's not as heavy as Majora's Mask and its looming threat impacting all peoples in one way, but the trouble of these small folk matter to me nonetheless.

But when I got to help the Hero's Shade ease his regrets, or help Midna get the mirror back so we can stop Zant, or even just help Agitha get all the bugs for her ball. No matter who I decided to help, all met me with genuine, heartfelt gratefulness. And in big ways and small, I feel the world of Hyrule was made better because of it.

I'm excited to see how this game finishes. I feel a bit sad at the thought of it ending, and not getting to see Midna again in any official capacity (unless I pick up Hyrule Warriors, which I might honestly do, I think I need more of Midna in my life), but I also feel glad to have experienced this wonderful game. I'm crestfallen that this game so rarely gets the discussion it so dearly deserves. And I'm elated that I decided to write this little blog, knowing there's likely only going to be one person reading this after I hit post. And whether or not that person is you reading this now, or someone else who will find this through the tags or stumble upon it by pure happenstance — thank you for reading from my brain's open forum. Expect a final piece to this chronicle once I've beaten the game — assuming I don't have more fangirling to do before so.

Twilight Clown Takes—Part 3

Another video of a YouTuber throwing out words like “gaslighting” “abuse” and “toxic relationships” brings all the clowns to the yard, like ants towards the discarded milkshake…but I don’t think it’s better than yours. Hie ho, let’s go

Bella Just Wants To Be A Vampire!!!1!1

Except that this goes against all the canon evidence, including Bella’s own words (!!) in Eclipse that immortality would have no allure without Edward. Should we doubt her? I don’t think we should.

For one thing, in Book 1 Bella has one very good reason to become a vampire even without Edward and superpowered immortality: It is literally dangerous for her to stay human and be a part of Edward’s world, a temptation of any vampire. It’s that reason, as well as Edward, that is the most significant factor in Bella’s reasoning. The rest are just sweet perks.

Anyhoo, apropos to nothing, here is a whole tag about how Romeo and Juliet is a romance, actually, and Twilight is patterned closely after their dynamics, so much so that Shakespeare could sue Meyer were he so inclined. And if anyone else calls them anything other than love stories, I’ll recommend them to an English major with actual reading comprehension skills.

Bella Has No Character/Is the Worst Character

Clown OP varies the anti script admirably and almost succeeds. But this is definitely a psy-op.

Bella changes little from her core traits after meeting Edward. On the contrary, her selflessness is ratcheted up to 1000 re: her trying to save her mother, successfully saving Edward in Italy, worried constantly about Jacob. She also defends and keeps her truck until it conks out, refuses to let Alice dictate her wardrobe, punches Jacob when he forced a kiss on her, all while still being hilariously quirky in her metaphors (the kitchen magnets, “I am Switzerland”). If anything, Bella became more…Bella with Edward.

I will give Clown OP one thing; there is an element of father figure in Bella’s dynamic with Edward. Bella as a mother to Jacob as her son, however, is stretching a lot. Maybe Werewolf!Jacob in Eclipse when Bella is worried for him and his pain? But her dynamic with pre-werewolf Jacob is pure typical teen shenanigans, nothing truly motherly.

Either way, Edward is more than a father, even an indulgent one, and Bella does not treat Jacob like her son. On the contrary, she misses human!Jacob and their pizza-and-bikes shed relationship in New Moon. Jacob brings out her immature side.

Platonic Friends

(Why do these clowns always overlook the fact that Edward was just as suicidal as Bella when he thought she was gone? He literally cannot exist without her! He says that explicitly! Also, Bella would have been so bored of Jacob after a while. Even pre-werewolf, they don’t have much in common.)

College AU

Yeah, no. While the coming-of-age element does muddy an otherwise straightforward romance plot line, there is power in merging the two. College is a very different dynamic than high school—as in, forming and maintaining friendships, much less romance, is much more difficult in college than high school. Romance in fiction (and in real life) needs regular forced proximity. That doesn’t happen if one person has evening classes, the other morning classes, one has work, etc.

Run, Bella, Run

There is literally no point in any of books where Bella wants to run away from Edward. Even in the meadow scene with Edward pulling the spruce tree and throwing it, Bella actually feeling genuine fear, she doesn’t run. By Eclipse she is mostly all 😅 about Edward finding out she met Jacob and is confident enough to send him a threatening voice message after he makes Alice kidnap her. And then she finally learns that if she goes 🥺 at him, Edward would just fold like a house of cards.

EVENT: Rescue Mission Phase Two Part 3. The Cybernetic Demon

Warning this drabble will contain vomitting, Reader Discretion is advised.

OST: Realization

The strike team stood outside of the base watching over every individual as they were being checked out by the medical team with reinforcements arriving as well. Made even worse by the fact that some of the brains that were found needed to be cartwheeled out carefully onto cargo ships. Some of them containing Zek's friends that he made when he was younger.

"I cant believe this. Why would someone go as far as to literally harvest the brains of innocent people who had done nothing wrong?" Eros said holding his helmet looking at the waves of civilians being treated for their injuries, any side-effects of the experimentation, and furthermore.

"Made worse by the fact that we we're planning to set charges and get rid of any evidence related with Project Immortalis... but the good news is that the successful serum was replicated when those scientists came to....all that now matters is if the mark we're chasing has it injected into himself..." Leonidas said, with Eros nodding. "Add salt to the injury mate, because most of those people were either Zek's own allies from before he joined up with us." He continued.

"Still.. it gladdens me to see that command had also sent Merlinda and Twilight here to help. Add that with Krieg and we should create an alternate version of Immortalis that should easily take out our foe.... the only problem is that we have a long way to go." Guangxian said, which the trio noticed Hermes, Krieg, Twilight, and Zek would walk towards them.

"Hows everything with your mum, Zek? All-clear? No side effects?" Eros asked.

"Ms. Atya is doing incredibly well, so far as per the disturbing videos that Guangxian had to send me which resulted in five days loss of beauty sleep. She has no signs of the aforementioned side-effects as I theorized which would happen. Albeit something else was wrong but its quite major.." Merlinda said, with Zek moving back to the trio to listen to what the professionals had else to say.

"What I noticed through my semblance was that her genetic cells were breaking down much slower than originally expected through a lifetime of faunus' or humans. After I took a blood sample and observed the sample... her blood was showing signs of symbiosis with Project Immortalis.. meaning one thing. Her body is aging slowly and any damage she may take might heal up rapidly... but I assume it is with a certain amount of dosages of it..... that Ms. Atya would have became psuedo immortal....." Twilight said.

"An Immortal Army . . . ." Eros said with awe, thinking for a minute. "And Ace how about him? Will he be able to pilot the Liberation still?" He asked while Krieg and Hermes looked at Eros.

"Ace is sadly suffering from some effects from Fusion Poisoning which thankfully the medical teams got to him in time to administer the antidote. As for the Liberation... it is currently being repaired... if Ace does come to he'll be using the Atelius' Railgun cannon in order to fire at any large targets should the time come.....

"As for me and Krieg we may have to remain here in order to help with ensuring that none of the civilians are suffering from the side-effects of Project Immortalis... sorry. at this point you may be the final four or five if Ace gets back up." Hermes said putting his hands behind his back.

"It' aint gonna be easy. But I do like a challenge...." Eros would say. "Alright. We'll leave things to you. Everyone else lets get back to work." He said putting on his helmet and thus him, Zek, Guangxian, and Leonidas would re-enter the base... of the Solitas Liberation LLC.

Back inside the base..

The small strike team led by Eros would move through the enemy base carefully keeping their wits about and their minds focused on the endgame at hand. As they all entered an elevator with just nothing more but calming music playing....

Finally... a voice would come through.

"Well Well! Gentlemen! I do must say so myself.. I congratulate you for catching us offguard like that...! Really, it takes a lot to do that ever since the last time... Mr. Sunna-Simo....." A voice would say with a southern accent added to it.

"Blyat.... I thought they would forget about that... guess they didnt." Zek said softly.

"After all, that time we were just about to complete our plans and even not harm those civvies. But after that.... we had to improvise on some things especially after losing our funding because of that Blizzard Sniper incident. I knew you had a killer instinct Zekkie-boy. However, turns out that killer instinct was focused on us instead of the enemies when we hired you..." The voice continued.

"When I get my hands on you, I'm going to make sure those bones of yours will be broken!!!!" Leonidas growled.

"Broken? Hahaha... After all, I think I can't call myself human anymore.Why not enter the main room and lets all talk face to face! Mano A Mano! Enemy of My Enemy is my friend!" The voice continued with the elevator ringing with the doors opening up as everyone walked through noticing the large cylinder towers.... with little blue rings of light.

"Those things can't be holding brains right?" Eros said with a light glare...

"I thought the room upstairs had all the brains there...."

"WRONG! All those towers are holdin' nice, juicy, flesh-meat brains!!!!" The southern voice spoke once more with everyone pointing their weapons at the railing in front of them as heavy footsteps were leading straight to them...with a large man wearing an equally large trenchcoat as he opened up one of tower lights with him picking up a brain as it trilled and twitched in terror.

"I definitely must say..... the alternative program to Project Immortalis... is effective!!!"

COMMANDER OF CLANDESTINE OPERATIONS ________________________________________ BARBATOS

"Alternative program? I know for a fact you just committed a huge human and faunus rights violation crime. I'm certain the Grand Council of Remnant would love to slam dunk you into the death penalty!" Eros said keeping Pequod and Ishmael on the burly man.

"You just aint gettin' it arent ya? Yeah, the brains are being put underneath active combat situations, but at the same time.... they are also being brainwashed as well into becoming perfect soldiers that will listen to the people in command aka. The successorts who managed to survive and thrive with Immortalis!!!" Barbatos continued with an evil grin on his face.

"You're telling me if my mother did not survive she would have been turned into a soldier!!!" Zek growled.

"After all.... I was the one who killed your first mama! And then beat the other one down! Trust me... her screams were sublime!!!!" He continued placing the brain back in its pod with an evil grin on his face making Zek point Hayha directly at Barbatos head and fired. With the man simply stepping to the side in a flash. "Not here... can't damage the goods now. I'll lead you boys to my office.... we can talk there!!!" He said turning around and walking away which everyone else didnt wait... they followed... into a room of stairs leading to another part of the building where Barbatos stood in a large room without his trenchcoat on turning around revealing his mechanical body

"Welcome gentlemen!! To your deaths! Cause after I'm done with you.... Imma slaughter all those civilians...and make sure they all get turned into perfect soldiers!!!!" He shouted pulling out his heavy machine gun. "Cause guess what." He said with his visor activating on his mouth and face.

OST: Cybernetic Destruction

"I'm going to tear off the flesh from all of your bodies and turn into perfect cyborgs like me..." He said with a menacing voice as he aimed for Zek first as he started firing with everyone scrambling around for cover. While Eros would shoot at him to get his attention.

"Then. I'm sending you back to the scrap heap then!" Eros shouted shooting at him to which Barbatos turned his attention toEros and began to shoot at him which the commander would throw a grenade at him while Leonidas used his 300, Interchangable plasma rifle in its grenade launcher state to further faze the cyborg with both making contact and exploding...

"Damn.... that was somethin.... my turn." He said with a glow being emitted from his back while Leonidas and Eros prepared themselves but in a blink, Barbatos was already in front of them both and swung both his fists at their guts hitting them and making them both cough in pain as they both keeled over.

"Bloody... hell....what...was that..." Eros said taking off his helmet to vomit, while Leonidas kept his on to and looked up at Barbatos who was chuckling at his work. "Why dont you live long enough to find out and-" Barbatos spoke noticing his HUD was showing up with an attempted hacking symbol on it as he turned around to look at Guangxian who was busy hacking into his systems. "Nice try..." He said initiating the counter measures and locking him out.

"What!?!" Guangxian said before his signaler popped making the hacker stumble a bit with the same thing happening to him..getting flash stepped and knocked out by the cyborg.

With the Cyborg ready to revel in his possible victory he looked around for Zek who in fact was just a slight distraction... which the sniper threw his knife... as Barbatos knocked it away. And right before he was going to do a fusion rush. Bang.....

His the light was emitted from his back was destroyed by a well placed grenade launched shot from Leonidas. Who stood up and roared charging at the Cyborg swinging a kinetic punch making him stumble with a groan from the charged semblance, then came Eros who stood up in time throwing his plasma knife at the rocket launcher, the Guangxian quickly came to and started hacking again... this time managing to counterhack Barbatos counter hacking measures...

And finally Zek would slide in to snipe the head of Barbatos off ... as the Cyborg fell down.... dead...

"Thats... for making me vomit... arsehole..."

"Actually... wasnt this fight meant to be a bit longer...? "

"The writer of this has things to do tomorrow, plus it was a holiday today." Guangxian said. while Leonidas facepalmed.

"Lets get back on track people. We aren't out of the woods just yet. " Leonidas would say with the speakers coming to life.

"I didnt think Brumel of all things would send a strike force to interrupt my plans!"

Hi....If you don't mind, can I ask, what are your top 10 (or top 7) favorite media (can be books/ manga/ anime/movies/tv series)? Why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before......Thanks....

No one's ever asked me this before! I only came up with 9. It's hard to think of many that have stood the test of time, because my ADHD brain tends to become super obsessed with a piece of media for three months and then lose interest. But here goes. This is mostly gonna be stuff I have never talked about on this blog.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV series) - I can't tell you why I like Buffy. I generally don't like vampire shows or any kind of "sexy monster" shows. When I'm looking for webcomics, I automatically skip over anything that has vampires in the description. And I don't like any other Joss Whedon shows. There's just something special about Buffy, I guess?

The Twilight Zone (1960s TV series) - When I was a kid, we used to watch the Twilight Zone marathon on the Scifi channel every New Years. I remember the first episode I ever watched was "Third From the Sun", and my little 8-year-old brain was blown away by the twist ending. A lot of it is super cheesy, but the series is just really nostalgic for me.

Forensic Files - I used to make fun of my sister for her "murder porn" and then I sat down and watched with her one time, and I got sucked into this story about a woman who was wrongly imprisoned for poisoning her baby (who actually died from a rare blood disease), and since my ADHD brain can't just like things a normal amount, I ended up binge watching the whole series. Community (TV series) - Not much to say here. It's just really funny and I love the characters.

A Series of Unfortunate Events (Book series) - I read them as a kid and re-read them as an adult. It's wonderful world-building - a somewhat simple story that feels like it's part of a much bigger story.

Haikyuu (Anime) - Right around the time season 3 came out, Tumblr kept recommending it to me. I didn't think I would be interested, because I don't like sports, but obviously I was on the edge of my seat the entire time because Haikyuu is amazing. I've started reading the manga too, but I'm only five volumes in.

Someone Else's BL Manhua - I started reading a lot of webcomics during the pandemic. This was the first one I read, and still the one I return to the most. I don't know if I love it because it's good or it's good because I love it. I loved that my first time reading it, I genuinely didn't know what the pairings would be.

Monkey Island (PC game series) - So, like, super random, but it's this old school point-and-click adventure game series about pirates that you play by solving really out-of-the-box puzzles. I play a lot of point-and-click puzzle games, but none are as delightfully weird as Monkey Island.

Legend of Zelda (Video game series) - I feel like I don't really need to explain. They're just really well-constructed video games, and each game has its own gimmick that it makes the very most of.

My artwork and a lil' excerpt or two, to go along with a new story format I'm working with on another site-

Special agent of S.M.I.L.E., Sweetie Drops undergoes a vigorous debriefing after chaos erupts in Canterlot. A giant robot superhero GECKOTRON THETA MKVI levels a city block. A drunken empress calls for a trade embargo against soy sauce. Panic, Royal catastrophe and devastation seem to be linked back to 4 couples, a public relations outreach for inter-species understanding and one wild night of middle-age mares getting WAY out of hand when the jello shots arrived...

Special Agent Caufax Cauliflower- "Would you say that was when the trouble began, agent?"

Agent Sweetie Drops- "No... Sure things were getting a bit weird but that was just everyone having a bit of fun. Blowing off steam... "

Twilight draped a hoof around her wife, purring. A gust of her margarita-scented breath you could light with a match circled Queen Chrysalis drawing a lascivious smile. Twilight chuckled maliciously as the raspy words sloshed from her lips.

"Hey..."

The Changeling Queen's forked tongue flicked at the air. "Hey."

"I'm MARRIED to you..."

Chrysalis nodded with a bemused smile. "Mnnhmmm. Yes, you are."

"D'jyou know what that means...?"

"Enlighten me."

Twilight leaned in conspiratorially. "I get to have S. E. X. with you.... nnn' nobody can get MAD about it..."

"Is THAT what that means?"

The plastered empress nodded emphatically. "Yep. We could do it. right here, n'frunna everybody. 'N nobody'd get mad. You wanna see?"

Agent Sweetie Drops continues...

"Being the designated cart-driver, I was still solid as a rock. But the rest of them were just..." She paused to take a sip of her drink, examining the thin trail of smoke drifting from the interviewing agent's incense burner.

"Maybe I should've called for the check when Roseluck climbed on the table and started dancing. I dunno. It seemed harmless enough." She smiled pleasantly. "Nothing too out of the normal for a mare her age, just out on the town, upscale place, among friends, private room." She chuckled "Seeing Muffins so happy was just heart-warming. They're both just such sweethearts and she's really a much sharper cookie than she lets on..."

Her left eye twitched again.

"When Roseluck showed us all 'her new piercing' that..." she raised a hoof pointedly "THAT might have been a red flag." She considered the moment, rolling it around in her mind. The mailmare applauding with pride as her horsepanic wife hiked up her dress. The assembled mares all cheering her on. Rainbow Dash hurriedly writing out a scorecard on her napkin and holding it overhead.

"Maybe...?"

The interviewer tapped Agent Sweetie Drops glass with her quill. "Do you need a moment?"

Bon Bon shook from her thoughts. "Hmmn? No. No. I'm fine. Thank you." Sipping her drink, she continued...

"I'd thought Applejack would be the biggest concern for the evening. All previous intelligence on the Apple Family had indicated that she could hold her liquor well enough but their gatherings get a bit rougher than most ponies are accustomed to."

She tapped a hoof on the table. "No, if anything, she was more an instigator than anything. Her and Lyra." She groaned. "Ough... LYRA..."

The interviewer's quill stopped short. "Agent Heartstrings?"

Bon Bon corrected herself. "Oh. Yes. My adoring wife..." She said it with arched eyebrows, re-playing the events leading up to the carnage. "I had told her to dress up for the evening. The empress had personally invited us, after all. It was a fancy place, upscale, themed restaurant. She would be there in an unofficial capacity on this so she could just kick back and enjoy herself. Maybe I should've been more specific. I dunno..."

"I read in your report..." the interviewer sifted through a few papers "something about... a cosplay?"

Bon bon rolled her eyes with the huff of a nerd-spouse. "She showed up, dressed as 'D' from that stupid video game 'Dragon Might Care'" She threw her hooves up in exasperation. "I mean, It's a great cosplay, sure, but COME ON, honey, we're dining out with ROYALTY, here... She kept quoting that stupid thing ALL NIGHT...."

He eye twitched again. "Hail to the king, baby... urgh.... goober"

Bon bon crunched on an ice cube as she swirled the contents of her glass around...

"Now, Rainbow Dash, she was a hoof-full but a measured one." She shrugged. "She's captain of The freakin' Wonderbolts. I'd anticipated that. Sure, they're military folkes. They can get a bit rowdy, trash a hotel room like rockstars..."

Bon bon thumped the table. "...but she's the Element of Loyalty, too, a freakin' hero. She's a bit salty, can get a bit crazy... but she's not one of those plot-pinching weirdos, the kinda drunks you just cuff and clap in the squad-cart. Even six-sheets to the wind, she has her priorities."

"She seemed to recognize the model on the Ni Sake we were all drinking... Not too much of a surprise, given her star status and all..." Bon bon tilted her head, considering the evening "bit weird for her to know the gal from just her plot... not so weird as the belching contest thing."

"Belching Contest?" The interviewer smirked.

"Yeah. Her and Applejack got into a belching contest at one point. Seemed a point of pride between the two. I dunno, might be a pegasus thing, more likely an Apple Family thing." she shrugged. "Weirdest part of it was how Roseluck seemed to consider it flirting. Maybe I've been married too long and I've forgotten how that works but... it was just BIZARRE, seeing her blush like a filly."

The interviewer scratched up a side note. "Was this 'belching courtship ritual' related to the later incident?"

"I don't think so. Just... weird. No. The REAL trouble didn't start until later"

Agent Sweetie Drops set her chin and took a deep breath-

"No. The REAL trouble didn't start until Queen Chrysalis called for Jello Shots."

She banged a hoof on the table. "Damn Jello shots.... I should've KNOWN..."

The interviewer raised an eyebrow inquisitively "You expected an incident to erupt from these 'jell-o shots'?"

"And Motorhoof."

The agent dropped her quill. "MOTORHOOF?"

"Yeah."

"My... god..."

The two sat in stark silence.

alright, finished my first time playthrough of the third semester... tbh I think there was a lot of really cool concepts introduced, both narrative and gameplay-wise, but it was too short to really utilise either of them to their maximum potential.

this got fucking long, so I’m slamming it under a cut, and I’ll make a separate post about What I’d Do Differently later

first things first, I thought the choice between maruki’s reality/the real reality would be waaaay more of a moral dilemma than what it was. instead, the whole thing is clearly as creepy as all heck, and the fact that some times bad things can lead to good ones is immediately highlighted by every single one of the thieves. like, unless you’re a huuuuuge akechi fan, I cannot see why anyone would ever choose maruki’s reality. this could be a bit of fandom poisoning leaking through, but I really thought there’d be more conflict behind whether or not it’s moral to reject/accept his reality.

next up, I want to talk about the royal trio - they’re such a huge thing in the fandom, but you only get the akechi/joker/sumire trio for like... ten minutes of gameplay, and akechi/sumire barely interact. in fact, we get tragically little of both akechi and the real sumire in general.

seeing akechi and the phantoms thieves’ working together civilly was great, but he really didn’t have enough screen time/plot relevance for me to feel particularly saddened with maruki’s revelation on 2/2, especially since I knew it was coming. like, if he’d actually begun to form genuine connections with the non-joker members of the team, it might have actually felt sad, but as-is, it was more of an ‘oh well, that’s a pity’ kinda deal.

plus, I personally would have enjoyed more antagonist!sumire, as her temporarily siding with maruki was soooo juicy, and it didn’t really feel like her re-joining the phantom thieves made sense until you’d done most of her confidant, which... is entirely optional!

to compound this, while sumire is a good unit and I used her for most of maruki’s palace, akechi... kind of isnt. his magic is mediocre, and none of his physical skills have crit, and nor does he have native access to charge. tbh while I wanted to use him and sumire for most of the third semester content, I found a joker/sumire/haru/makoto team far more useful for generic shadows, and joker/ann/ryuji/makoto for the bosses.

speaking of another gameplay thing that should have been cool in theory, but was a bit average in execution, were the third awakenings. honestly, I love the narratives behind them, especially with the persona 4 homage, and the busted skills you get are reeeeeally fun in theory, but... there just isn’t enough gameplay left to really utilise them!! like, you either toggle between unlocking them and sumire’s confidant, and hope you’ve done it in the right order so you can get all of them before clearing the new mementos level/maruki’s palace, oooooor you clear that stuff first, and then only have the final boss/challenge battles to use them in. ugh!

while there’s been a lot of crit so far, I will say that I thought maruki’s palace, and maruki in general were excellent. the palace managed to hit the nail between dystopic and utopic perfectly, for a delightfully unsettling effect. I thought the exam section and the twilight corridor were both fantastic - the former for what it said about maruki’s character (i mean... YIKES), and the latter for its visuals/music/vibe in general. also, the video tapes revealing maruki’s backstory were great - seriously, all this time, I thought the palaces needed something like it, and now that we’ve actually got it, it was just as good as I expected.

speaking not of his palace but him in general, unlike sumire, I thought maruki was woven into the narrative in general really well. his introduction to the story felt natural, and I looooooove how it was joker’s fault he figured out how to usurp reality to begin with. not to mention, fist-fighting your therapist on the roof is just... such a peak final battle. I love it.

Spy x Family (Season 1)

After speaking with a coworker about anime recommendations and combing through my CrunchyRoll history, it struck me that I have no memory of a handful of the one season shows that litter that list. As I’m also doing with video games, I hope this acts as a little memory boosts for why I stuck with a show. (I may have to go back and re-watch those ones that escape me.)

But first!

Goddamn, pal. What a hell of a way to get myself out of a TV rut. I tell myself that I can only rewatch Laid-Back Camp so may times before it’s no longer acceptable, and that I need to branch out and discover new series that make me feel the way LBC does.

I’m not sure that Spy x Family ticks those same cozy, slice-of-life boxes that I find comfort with, but hell if I’m not blown away by this. As with most of my general knowledge, I had heard high praise of Spy x Family and kinda understood premise from snippets? I’m not sure what finally gave me that little push to hit play on the first episode, but dammit if I had being right.

Is Anya somehow one of the best characters in recent memory? My sell to folks recently is that “she’s an idiot because she’s four,” and I mean it reverently! I haven’t found myself laughing at a character in this way in a hot second. Anya cracks me the hell up.

I look forward to the forthcoming seasons, because as I was working my way through the existing episodes, it kept occurring to me that Yor’s story is still so unspoken. Season 1 was all about Twilight and his role as Loid Forger. Anya is there to speak in third-person a la George Costanza, but Yor is lurking in the shadows. Under what affiliation is Yor working? Who is the Shopkeeper? Will the first target that collides with Loid’s work be Desmond? Or Twilight himself? The opening credits of the second half of season 1 feed this fire further, focusing almost exclusively on Yor and her relationship with Anya. I’m in, you got me. I’m ready for a bit more character development for her in season 2.

It’s so difficult for me to tell how long this story is intended to be. It’s also occurring to me that I have no idea of manga creation works. Is that shit ever cancelled? Surely, right? I guess if it makes the transition to anime, it’s established itself as a player and will probably see its way through to the end. (A thought previously unthunk till this point.)

I don’t know if I really want to summarize the seasons here; I can look that shit up on my own. But I’m hoping just writing something about how I was feeling while watching is enough to get those memories flowing again. Spy x Family should’ve been an expected hit, but it still snuck up on me. Bring on season 2.
