Random Worldbuilding Questions
Are there any foods with symbolic meanings that are eaten on special occasions (e.g. katsudon for victory, or new years oranges for luck)? How did the tradition get started?
We all know about weddings and marriage, but are there any ceremonies that symbolically / legally / magically officialize a different type of relationship in your world's culture? (Adoption, apprenticeship, friendship, etc.)
What's a rule or social norm that is widely followed in theory, but in practice everyone knows it's not a big deal and breaks it all the time?
Are there any trades or hobbies whose practitioners are stereotyped as weird or extraordinary? (E.g. the "mad hatter" trope.) Why? How true is this perception?
What are some cliches, tropes, and/or plots that commonly appear in stories written by your world's inhabitants? What were they inspired by? Why are they popular?
What is a common way to subtly insult someone in your world, without crossing into overt rudeness? Gifting an item with negative connotations? Addressing them more familiarly or formally than normal? Backhanded compliments?
If you pulled a random average Joe off the streets of your world and asked them to draw a house, what would they draw? (Shape, roof style, position and number of windows, etc.)
Is there a place in your world that nobody has ever been to - the bottom of a cave, the moon, another dimension, etc.? How do people know it exists? Why haven't they gone there? What do they believe it's like, and how right/wrong are they?
What aesthetics are considered "advanced" or "futuristic" in your world - canvas wings, shiny chrome, smooth plastic? How has this changed over time?
What's a fun fact about your world that you as the worldbuilder are dying to share, but nobody ever thinks to ask?

Happy WBW! What are the coffee shops like in your world? Or what are the coffee shop equivalents? Are they bustling? Overpriced? Are they decrept or college-kid only territory? If you wanna get into it, feel free to add on your characters' interactions, feelings, or orders!
Thank you for the ask!
Unfortunately, there aren't any coffee shops (nor any kind of complex structures like that) in Chima.
Chima has the Chi Market, which is a weekly event where animals from all tribes visit the Lion Temple to sell stuff. It gives an opportunity for tribes to interact and help each other, so the cultural exchange is quite intense. This event makes the Lion Temple full and lively, granting the tribe's royal family a bunch of money to maintain their tribe.
Prices vary a lot, depending on the individual's species, life condition, product, and other socially complex factors. The Raven Tribe for example has a problem with social inequality, and a majority of its animals live in bad conditions, so their products can be a bit overpriced, as the Raven Village is situated in a biome that's borderline a desert (mixture of canyon and desert) and doesn't have much access to anything besides gems and metal they mine. They don't gain much and most things are expensive there.
The Chi Market is going to appear a lot on TFLOC, so if you're interested in it, please stick around to see more :D

originally had a super long multi paragraph ramble about this written out but then realized i did not have to say all that . anyway . i think that the reason some little animal guy sonic characters have last names while most others just go by (name) the (species) has to do with cultural differences... the fact that the characters with last names are also the same characters who have more human sounding first names makes me think that they were born in an area that had a large human population, or that their parents or grandparents were, so their family was influenced by human naming practices

Random Battletech Request/Question
Me being me, the first thing I started doing when I got into BattleTech lore was start storybuilding crossovers. I have two ideas that I have done quite a bit of work on, but have hit a wall, as I am either unconfident of my knowledge or unable to settle on an answer that the various questions I have come up with. Also, honestly, storybuilding is usually more fun when it's collaborative.
One is a crossover with Transformers. The other is a crossover with Dragonriders of Pern.
Obviously, both of these involve things that, by general agreement, are verboten in BT canon, so before I endeavor to invest in writing either one up, I want to know what the odds are of getting a useful result so...

Do you guys think solar energy is used on No Man's Land? I mean, they're on a desert planet with two suns. We already know Dependant Plants aren't an unlimited resource, so who would say no to an alternative energy source? Surely, at least the more advanced cities/settlements with the materials to spare would give it a shot? In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Ship 3 already uses this to keep the ship running.
In Tristamp, we were introduced to Windmill Village & yeah, it failed since winds are hella unpredictable, making it a hit-or-miss alternative.
But again, getting sunlight on a desert planet is as easy as finding sand. It might even be the solution to their reliance on Plants.
DISCLAIMER: I'm no scientist so if radiation or something else is involved to joss this theory of mine, pls feel free to explain it in the comments/tags, I'm genuinely curious to know more.

Is it just me or is it weird how in Xenoblade Chronicles 2, the people of Mor Ardain and Tantal don’t any physical adaptations to their environment?
Like, most of the humans in Alrest are very clearly distinguished in terms of which Titan’s nationality they belong to, right down to having signature accents in the English dub. But the game also experiments with them being different physically.
The Urayans have rock-like scales across their skin, and like, that tracks. They live inside the Urayan Titan and the geography is extremely rocky and covered in cliffs and fjords. Their adaptation makes sense. The Gotmotti’s cat ears make…less sense. But I guess you can make some argument that they live in plains/jungles among beasts, so it figures they’d become more ‘animal-like’ to adapt (though I suspect this mostly for the meta reason of ‘gotta gave catgirls’). Meanwhile I’m not sure what about Indol specifically makes the Indoline have blue skin, elf ears and unnaturally long lives. But it is at least distinct.
But what about the Ardanians and the Tantalese? They live in the harshest climates of all. One a scorching desert with dust winds, and the other amidst bitterly cold, snow capped mountains. And yet, they are pretty much just normal humans. You’d think the Ardanians would have like…cold blooded reptilian features to protect them from the heat. While the Tantalese could have fur to shield them from the cold.
Am I implying Morag should have been a scaly and Zeke should have been a furry? Well…I’m not not saying that…but I do legitimately think it’s weird that Xenoblade 2 only kinda goes halfway with distinguishing the types of humans on each Titan.
There’s also the Leftherians, but I’m not sure what you’d do to reflect their environment, and they probably didn’t want Rex’s design to be overly out there given his ‘Everyman’ position as the protagonist. So I kind of get that one.

OKAY SORRY I KNOW I SAID I’D STICK TO TAGS ON THE NAMING CONVENTION POST BUT YOU’RE TELLING ME YOU ALSO HAVE A PIGLIN OC WITH KNOWLEDGE OF POTIONS WHO IS TRYING TO FIND A CURE FOR ZOMBIFICATION ??
Flintbairn and Icarus should pool their knowledge pronto..,.,, they would be unstoppable
Also I promise I’m not completely. Unhinged I’m just excited about this!! That is so so cool?? Hello?????
Okay LITERALLY holding your hand and skipping through some grass really gleefully right now I'm not kidding when I say this excites me to no end. Oh my god? Like, I'm getting cute aggression like if you see a very little and wonderful cat you just want to squeeze it? Doing that with you
Anyways. Drawing Flint and Icarus together right now we're going crazy (I'm kidding, but for real if you have a design in mind for Icarus, I'd be happy to help you get a visual on em ;))
I promise I'm also a very regular person with very regular interests that I am normal about and I'm not unhinged either! Unless it's piglins, then maybe. But only then!
And it's alright if you're a little nervous to reblog with text or send an ask but I'm glad you did!!! Like!!! You're a person who my blog was made for!!!! Let's GOOOOO!!!!! That makes me so unbelievably excited!!!! I'm generally pretty chill and I try my best to be kind to everybody (remember to eat and drink today please), so I like to think I don't come off as intimidating? Though my long paragraphs of rambling may scare some people off, lol. Thank you for saying hello!!!! Hi!!!!! Can we talk about naming systems and your oc please *kicking my feet, twirling my hair*
That's all, I'm just excited about it and I have no idea to express it other than using phrases like "rotating in my head", "microwaving him", et cetera. Complete nonsense because regular words don't have the capabilities to hold the emotions I feel. I promise I can type better and more eloquently than this, but sometimes I get a little too excited for my own good ^^;;
ALSO GET SOME SLEEP! I hope you are resting. Or have rested, I forget when you reblogged my post, but I'm someone who'd also stay up til 3 reading about piglin naming systems so I'm one to talk I guess, lol

Thinking about making more characters for the actual store of the Lost Locket:
Emerald for answering more general Nijezdi cultural stuff
Nightshade for mechanical stuff
And a Nezchelit, Pseudo-Centaur, Rezmal, and Jiralf for learning about each planet. That way it’s more of a general hub of antiquity all over the galaxy rather than “why the hell does this single Nijezdi know so much about other planets”.
Makes the Lost Locket feel more like a place rather than a… idk a gimmick.
Would that be fun? I’m thinking it’d be a lot more interesting to ask actual characters about the worlds (and cultures) they were born into rather than getting answers from the obvious author of the world…
Give me a couple of days, and I’ll probably come up with something

Ok i saw your tags on that last post and i am BEGGING you to elaborate on your Minecraft villagers' religion/mythology that sounds amazing
HELLO YES. I have a limited amount of time right now but let's see how much I can get through by the Power of Insufferable Nerdness
(Edit: apparently that amount is A Lot, I'd apologize for this absolute essay but I am in fact not sorry at all, woe, lore be upon thee :))) ) (there's pictures too I promise)
Okay so. Welcome to the village of Abyss. I discovered it while I was exploring the 1.18 update and I somehow managed to leave my shulker box of rockets in a cave along with my enderchest, essentially stranding me here with what I had on me until I could resupply. I could have just saved the coords and died, come back later for my stuff, whatever else, except that. The village spawned like this.
Tumblr media
Directly next to this massive, abyssal ravine filled with impenetrable darkness. Upon closer inspection, there were only three villagers left in the place. Upon even more inspection, several of the village paths seemed to lead...directly over the edge.
Hm. I wonder where the rest of the villagers went.
The lore developed slowly as I fixed the place up and built it out more. Abyss is the "god" of the village in the same way rain falling is music - it's not, really, but the act of observing it as such makes it so. The longer a villager looks into that darkness, the more they realize that it's not just darkness: it is inhabited, made of hundreds of rattling bones and groaning once-living throats, crawling the floor of the canyon just out of view through the shadows. Together with the darkness itself those voices make a will, and that will thrives in the unknown, and the longer one spends looking out and down, the more that will can be felt and understood.
The closest building to the ravine got turned into the Church of Abyss. Inside is more of a town hall than a place for religious services - Abyss doesn't really have values that can be verbally taught - but its most important purpose is as a lead-in to the observation platforms:
Tumblr media
Where the priests of Abyss sit and look into the ravine. There are three levels (screenshot only got the last two). A priest moves down a level when they feel they've gained enough knowledge of the unknowable, and unknown enough of the knowable, to move into a deeper space of reflection. One of the three key principles of the Abyssians is that there MUST be at least one person observing Abyss at all times.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[tw: death talk in next paragraph, stops after that]
The lowest level of the platforms is the walkway. The Abyssians believe that the greatest fate in death is to join the infinitely knowable unknown, to become one part in the collective un-soul of the mob hoards in the darkness, in unity becoming both everything and nothing at the same time. The walk is their final destination. A body will be carried there and released if a villager dies elsewhere, and a lot of people who can feel their death coming will go down there and meditate for a few days while their loved ones make them as comfortable as possible until they die. However, elder priests and people who have either achieved high honour or done a great deal of harm that they regret will walk the precipice themselves, disappearing into the forever-dark.
In practical terms for day-to-day living, there is an Abyss shrine in most households. I haven't built an example to show yet, but it is a very deep, narrow hole in the floor, dug deep enough under the house to create a piece of the same shadowy can-stare-into-it-forever effect as the ravine has. Villagers will put small offerings down the shrine on special occasions, like a birth in the family, or they'll give a tiny part of a harvest or mining haul. That way, the event or good/bad fortune can be symbolically connected to the whole and added to the depth of the knowledge Abyss stores within its unknown.
Above every household Abyss shrine is a copy of the Tome of Abyss, which outlines the three main pacts of Abyss (which if you don’t care to read six pages of my drabble, roughly amount to “do NOT light up the ravine” “Abyss is revered as an afterlife or sacred lack of afterlife” and “at least one person must be watching Abyss at all times”)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for the motto in the back, I have a feeling that I used a slightly different translation than the common usage for at least one of these words, but I can’t for the life of me remember it now. -_- Just by running it through latin to english translation though, it roughly amounts to “Without light, without end, without fault”.
You could call Abyss a death god, or a knowledge god, or a type of void god (although it's really quite the opposite, with the Void being an entity of paradoxically absolute nothingness and Abyss being the infinite multitude and possibility contained in darkness), but it isn't really any one of those things. It's a bit debatable whether it even existed before the villagers found it, or if their observation gave it its will in the first place, but whatever it is and however it came about, it exists now. It exists, and I like it the normal amount. Yup. Definitely the normal amount. :)

@tsuwabuki replied:
how would u answer #10?
moving this to a separate post for easier answering !! (question list)
What’s a fun fact about your world that you as the worldbuilder are dying to share, but nobody ever thinks to ask?
this is actually a tough one for me because I feel like I immediately shout everything I come up with into the void lol. it’s not something I’m dying to share, but have a random fact I haven’t figured out how to put on the lore site yet:
since there’s no laws in the wilderness, it’s popular for young hot-headed nobles to fight duels just outside city walls, the idea being if they accidentally kill their opponent they won’t face any legal repercussions. as much as they like to play this up, though, these duels are usually pretty harmless; they’re just messing around and trying to seem tough in front of their friends.

Happy STS! Seasons are changing. Tell me how one or more of your characters would react. Are they dressing cozy? Obsessed with everything pumpkin? Have they been prepping for Halloween since last year?
In october, the air and land begin to dry, and the Crocodile Hideout becomes more manageable to live there, while places situated in the Great Divide become harsher areas. Because of the season, rains happen less frequently, and flat terrain gets less flooded, so it's a great time for harvesting food in Chima.
Definitely not what you expect, but Chima is a hot land, so the slightest cold during this season is a big refresher for animals.
Halloween isn't that predominant in Chima, as the tribes live far from each other, but the Wolf Tribe always manages to bring their good harvests to everyone, and maybe play a little too.

Throughout my years of being a Pokémon fan (and other fandoms fan), I have come up with several ideas for stories I wanted to write. Who hasn’t humored the thought of translating their ideas to reality. Except putting yourself out there is extremely nerve-wracking. Even more so when you are a somewhat perfectionist like myself. Improper grammar/capitalization can make potential readers not want to read fanfics. And I am not nitpicking the occasional errors.
To name a few: using too many commas, repetitive word choice, improper grammar, uncapitalized words throughout the entire story, thick blocks of text when you need to break up paragraphs, etc… You get the point. The last one seriously makes me mad because I will lose my place in a chapter. I understand the first drafts won’t be perfect from the get-go, but them not improving frustrates me. What I am trying to get at is writing something you are satisfied with is harder than it sounds.
Moving onto the main point of this post. The Pokémon world’s floating timeline presents a unique problem. Whether it is the eternal summer of the Anime or games remakes making concrete events more vague. I’m not going into the darker Manga events since I barely know them. It tends to be different from our own in many ways besides super powered creatures. Here are some questions I ask myself whenever I think up any fanfic ideas.
Tumblr media
—Do all individuals of a species look the same? {Pokémon look like mirror copies no matter how many you catch in the games. I would like to think there are other appearance traits than the bigger size. Maybe some have shaggier fur, longer claws, and different colors besides being shiny considering the genetic diversity.}
—Why do some people have Pokémon before being ten years old? {We know being ten is the minimum requirement to take on the league. Yet we see visibly younger kids have Pokémon in several other regions. I think ten is the youngest age you are allowed to be to compete in official tournaments. Ash had a trainer’s license in the Anime which might relate to this.}
—Are talented/prodigy trainers granted special privileges? {In a short answer, yes. We see very young trainers like Tate and Liza appointed to co-gym leader status. It seems talented trainers are very sought after in the Pokémon world. The youngest high-ranking trainer has to be (SPOILERS) the Paldea’s Poppy. Her attitude and visible appearance make me think she is five to six years old. Poppy is strong enough to hold an Elite Four position in the game!}
—Why are we made the new champion after beating the old one? {This is one of the few things about the games that genuinely annoys me. We are not only the strongest trainer in-region but given a high authority position. League champions appear to be people who rank first in the tournament. What would make more sense is the former champion mentors whoever beat them for a few years. Champions hold the highest authority being able to go to places too dangerous for average trainers.}
—What exactly are Legendaries/Mythicals? {Not the easiest question to answer so let’s go over the basics. All species have the strength of fully-evolved dragon types. Each has a job to do in the world, some more important than others considering what they represent. One's like the Creation Trio and Arceus are actual real gods. Giratina itself was described as eldritch. People can go their whole lives without seeing one in any continuity. A lucky few can catch them and they will actually listen to orders.}
—Is it legal to have a Legendary Pokémon considering how important they are? {When you take into account their sheer strength and abilities this is a grey area. We catch the region’s legendaries/mythical in every game. I have personally used at least one box legend on teams to beat the Elite Four. In the universe though how often does this genuinely happen? Where they bond enough to let themselves be caught by a mortal. It would be so easy for Groudon or Yveltal to just kill us if they didn’t want to listen... Are there rules for this? A limit to how many you can use on a team. Does the trainer have to let the league know they have one if they take on the Pokémon League? Look at how easily Tobias swept the gym challenge.}
—How advanced is the technology? {Another odd area so rarely addressed in the Pokemon World. Bags, a staple thing, can hold several items including Bikes in them without weighing us down. Pokemon are transported by digitizing them across the internet/electric lines. Centers can heal our pokémon with a machine in just a few seconds. Teleport tiles have existed since the first freaking generation! The Pokemon World is much more advanced than our own. I would say they focused on medicine, science, and transportation the most.}
—Is battling similar to animal fighting? {PETA has kicked up enough fuss over the years when it comes to the Pokémon franchise. The games have shown that trainers make friends with their Pokémon enough to affect battles. Some even shrug off status effects to not worry the trainer. There are cases of Pokémon abuse and abandonment in the series. Yet tend to be much rarer than our cases in our world. Besides, wild Pokémon will battle to get stronger.}
—Are there any real-world animals? {Evidence for this is present when you look at species classifications. Cats, dogs, mice, crocodiles, and others like that are found in dex entries. Fish were seen in the anime’s early episodes. Pidgeotto ate an actual worm before Ash caught it... So kinda. Smaller animals seem to inhabit the Pokémon World from what we’ve seen. Makes the food situation less grim.}
—What is pokémon training actually like? {I imagine that it’s far less glamorous than the games show. Camping for months on end without access to showers. Having to feed six super-powered creatures three times a day. Not to mention having an unstable budget to rely on. I pity those who repeatedly lose.}
Now questions I don’t have answers/ headcanons/theories on currently.
—What was the Pokémon World’s reaction to parallel dimensions being real? Ultra Space
—Why are there two different types of Rangers? One that uses poke balls and one using stylers.
—Is time travel a somewhat regular occurrence and do people watch for timeline changes? The Hisui situation is not subtle with there being Porygon in the pokédex. Time-space distortions might appear in the modern day.
—Are humans in there more durable than us? Ash gets hit by Pokémon moves and Lance hyper-beamed someone in Mahogany Town.
—How can friendship be quantified?
—What’s the yearly number of Pokémon killing humans?
—Are psychics employed as lie detectors?
—Is it wrong for a psychic to read minds?
—Do mediums need special training?
—How do non-Pokémon related careers fare in a Pokemon training-focused world?
—Does ditto breeding have any side effects?
—What requirements are there to become a gym leader? Why is it only one gym per town?
—Can a trainer be charged with murder if one of their Pokémon kills a human in self-defense?
—Are there blacklisted species against the law to be trained without licenses?
—What happens to all the less-than-ideal babies from IV breeding? Shiny breeding?
—Where do Pokémon eggs actually come from?
—How often are Pokémon actually injured to the point if bleeding?
—Why does this crazy world let ten-year-olds wander in the wilderness?
—Are the evil teams' schemes years in the making? What were they thinking messing with the God-like Legendaries?
—How much does the league tell the public about us stopping evil teams?
—Are the additional non-native encounters in remakes caused by the Legendary Pokémon raging? Mass migrations away from danger.
—Can they take away our legendary Pokemon?
—Do the legendaries have cult followings?
—Would using Mega Evolution or Z-Moves to battle trainers who can’t be considered unfair?
—How rare is the ability to talk to Pokémon?
—Do badges/ribbons expire?
—Is evolving less maturing than just growing stronger? Can evolved mons still be immature?
—Are atheists a thing in the Pokemon world?
—How many grimdark or nuzlucke stories are just dark timelines?
—What if Legendaries are classified as genderless because nobody has studied them?
—Do Pokémon have to be re-caught if the trainer wants to switch their poke ball type?
—How rare are evolution items?
—How do TMs teach Pokemon new moves?
—Are ghost types immortal?
—What happens to Orre during the time skip?
—Does Ash age or is he stuck at ten?
—When does Ingo get sucked into the past?
—How long was he there before we show up?
—How do trade evolutions occur wild?
—Do we control the player character to save the region?
—What weapons if any exist in that world?
—How old are the Champions?
---------
I ask myself these when I consider any future stories history and worldbuilding. Hope to one day write quality fanfic that avoids the cliches.

Oh my god this is such a horribly random question, but like… how do the immortals in HS take showers? Because Vicky is said to take several showers throughout HS1 & 2 and it always confused me.
I often think of them as being similar to birds, so I feel like it’d make more sense if they take baths rather than straight up showers? Ya know, like bird baths? I don’t know how comfortable the water from a shower nozzle would be on feathers. It might be okay for the immortals with bat-like/muscle-based wings. But what about the ones with sensitive insect-like wings? Surely water blasting from a shower head would be too much force.
And aside from the “showers or bath” question, do they wear “wing caps”? Like how there’s hair caps but for their wings? Or???
