Hi! First, I want to quickly note that this blog is run by one person (me!) so I'm not sure who "everyone" would be ><

The original post being referred to is here, detailing how many carnivorous animals in Sumerian begin with the root ur 𒌨 "dog". There isn't really an equivalent I know of for other animals, where instead a given root could be extended to describe different kinds of the same animal, as in udu "sheep", uduhursang "species of wild sheep", udukurra "highland sheep", udunita "ram", uduuligi "coarse-wool sheep", udusara "perfect-quality sheep" etc.

This is not to be confused with the use of animal determinatives, which were written but not pronounced. For example, most if not all birds are written with the sign 𒄷 after them, meaning "bird"; though 𒄷 alone means mushen "bird", it wouldn't be pronounced in a word like 𒄷𒌷𒅔𒄷 huriin "eagle". Similarly, the sign 𒄩 is used after fish, but ku "fish" wouldn't be pronounced in the spoken language.

I was heavily inspired by @creepercraftguy's headcanons on voices for the Danganronpa Another cast so I caved and did my own as well. For the purposes of this post I will focus on the city-state of Labisa, the largest of the Kishic Cities and the former capital of the Kishic Empire.

There are a number of people whose roles within the social hierarchy and government of the city, can be understood as "sacred" or otherwise related to the gods, spirits, or magic.

The King/Queen

Jal/Jali pl.Jalun/Jaliun (Jahl/Jahlee) Great/Big/Grand Alternatively Jalsankat/Jalsankati (Jahl-sAn-kaht/Jahl-sAn-kahti) Great Priest/Great Priestess or Jalunkut/Jalunkuti (Jahl-oon-koo/Jahl-oon-kee) Great Lord/Lady

The monarch forms the top of the social and religious hierarchy. The monarch themselves are not considered sacred or divine in nature in the sense of the Apunian Fapacha. Rather it is the role of the monarch which is afforded a sacred designation. It is thus the throne or title which is considered as divine rather than the person.

Perhaps as a result of the lack of a divine nature applied to the monarch themself, Labisa has seen no less than twenty-five separate coups/ civil wars/succession crises in the 900 years since the fall of the Kishic empire following the death of the Spiritblood king, Tamel. In comparison, Apuna where the monarch is believed to be directly favored by the divine, has seen only three such incidents in its nearly 4,000 year history.

One of the titles of the monarch is Jalsankat, Great Priest, and is considered to be the clerical head of the Temple of the Goddess, Humbalibal. This title is almost entirely ceremonial in nature, typical reserved to festivals and some sacrifical rites.

It should be noted that there has only been one instance of a Kishic monarch capable of the use of sagecraft (Babirkukaza (Babiru-spirit, Ku-man, Kaza-art/skill)), Queen Sema III of Labisa of the Line of Haman.

Priest/Priestess

Sankat/Sankati pl.Sankatun/Sankatiun (SAn-kaht/SAn-kahti) Borrowed from the Shabalic Sankud, its exact meaning is unclear, Patsankat/Matsankati (Paht-sahn-kaht/Maht-sahn-kahti) Father Priest/Mother Priest

There are thirty-one temples within Labisa, dedicated to twenty-seven distinct deities. Each of these temples house anywhere from 3 to 700 priests/priestesses, servants, and attendants. Each temple is headed by a Patsankat or Matsankati, varying on the nature of the deity. Below this top position is a complicated hierarchy composed of several distinct classes, typically based on seniority within the temple.

The largest temple in the city is that of the city's patron deity, the ram-horned mountain goddess, Humbalibal. The temple sits at the center of the larger temple district.

Those clerical members who are capable of using magic (sagecraft), typically exist near the top of this hierarchy, though not always.

Most clergy members are capable of some level of literacy, thus representing approximately 76% of the 3% of all Labisians educated in literary arts.

Sages/Seers

Not strictly a profession. While humans can not use magic in and of themselves, certain humans, namely sages and seers, can communicate with spirits and access their magical potential. As such while a sage cannot manipulate their own magical energies they may act as a conduit for the magic of spirits. This is known as sagecraft (Babirkukaza). The ability to use sagecraft is typically genetic and inherited, in some rare instances it may develop as a result of exposure to wild magic (Bikab).

Magical energy, the energy wielded naturally by spirits and deities is called Fizatab. The lingering effects of magic can last long after the original intent has been fulfilled, this lingering magical energy is Bikab/Wild magic. The effects of wild magic are in some ways comparable to radiation. Most feats of magic are far too minor to leave any drastic mark, most of the time the remaining magic will leech into the environment and become diluted enough to become unnoticeable. However in the case of particularly powerful shows of magic, such as those from particularly powerful spirits and deities, the resultant wild magic may remain for decades or centuries. Most of the wild magic which currently effects Kishetal and Kobani as a whole is a result of the incursion of the gods during the Great Calamity. Typically each patch of wild magic will act differently and manipulate the environment which it covers in unique ways. Typically these changes are uniform among species. Plants may change color or grow in strange ways, animals may mutate and change in unrecognizable ways (Bibsupak/Bibsupakun). When humans and human-bloodlines are drastically changed by wild magic they resulting people(s) are referred to as forestfolk (Nutkun).

The relationship between sage and spirit is a diplomatic one, built on negotiation and sacrifice. Thus the role of the sage is to plead to these spirits, to offer them gifts and boons, often in the form of their own vitality, and even at times their physical well-being in exchange for the spirits' magical power. The intensity of the effect which a sage can produce is reliant on both the fortitude of the sage and the powers of the spirit. In most cases, the greater the act of magic, the higher the toll the sage must pay.

A seer is a kind of sage that is capable of taking a spirit directly into their mind/allowing for the transmission of visions and memories without the use of magical tools or mediums such as Arkodian Bronze. Some sages who are not classified as seers are capable of allowing spirits into their minds, however this is typically even more catastrophic to the sage in question than it would be if they were a seer. One in every ten sages are seers. Sages are exempt in most cases from serving as guards/farmers/or soldiers, rather they often work as scholars, clergy, or as attendants in the Palace. While sages (unless they are priests) are not typically thought of as being in contact or related to the divine, their relation with spirits and nature does lend them a sacred nature.

Plantbrews

Kurkipkut/Kurkipkuti pl. Kurkipkun (Koor-keep-koo/Koor-keep-koo-ee) Plant (Brewing) Person, more simple Kurku (Koor-koo) Leaf (Brewing) Person

Plantbrews are those individuals who specialize in the use of magical plants and animals in the creation of medicines, potions, and spells. Histortically most plantbrews are women from rural environs. Similiar to sages, while plantbrews are not related directly to the deities and the divine, their close association with nature and magic gives lends them a sacred reputation.

Plantbrews themselves exist in a liminal space, their existence at the outskirts of society and their often close relationship with Forestfolk, creates an air of mystery and at times distrust around the profession. Plantbrews are even barred from entering certain temples. Despite this, king's typically have their own devoted plantbrew(s), famously the case for the King's of the Line of Asherdul, who rely on plantbrews to treat Asherdul's Bane.

Asherdul's Bane is a gruesome and ultimately fatal disease which solely effects the male line of that dynasty. Asherdul's Bane is a congenital autoimmune disease passed down the male line. Symptoms include the rashes, the loss of hair and nails, the formation of nodules on the skin, and the gradual development of severe ulcers on the skin and muscles which may eventually spread across the body, in later stages the deterioration typically spreads to the organs, most noteably the lungs and stomach. Deaths are typically the result of organ failure or else of infection. Most affected by the disease pass in their 40's-50's.

Outside of the city, plantbrews typically hold considerably more power and may double as priests or elders.

The recipes and practices of plantbrews are jealously guarded and often recipes will die with their creators. It is not unheard of for plantbrews to be sages, and indeed the ability to see and communicate with spirits is at times highly useful for the creation of a plantbrew's craft.

I read a bunch of comics and graphic novels in December with a little romance, lit fic, sci fi, and fantasy mixed in. It's difficult to pick favorites because everything I finished was pretty good but I choose Erasure, Ashwin, The Hunger and the Dusk, and Family Style.
