Let's Mod - A Community Collab Project with DeeSims!
DeeSims and I thought it would be fun to take you all along the process of building a mod. So you get to see the good, bad and ugly.. and emphasis on the ugly. She is using this set in her current Let's Play R2R series and then we are tagging up once a week to discuss the updates, improvements, bugs, roadblocks, and all the fun that comes with modding.
The functionality of this set focuses on catching and selling crustaceans such as lobsters and crabs. We are making a table that lets you package these into crates and sell at custom market stalls that are part of this set. These market stalls also let you buy scuba gear and equipment such as jet skis!
If you are interested in the process or want to learn how to mod, then tune in this Sunday 2 PM PT for a joint livestream with me & Dee! We plan to do this once a week until the mod is ready for release.

I. Electrify by Saul Griffith
The MacArthur prizewinning engineer offers a detailed, optimistic and urgent roadmap for a climate-respecting energy transition that we can actually accomplish in 10–15 years. The US’s energy budget has been wildly overstated. About half of the energy that the US consumes is actually the energy we need to dig, process, transport, store and use fossil fuels.
Renewables have these costs, too, but nothing near the costs of using fossil fuels. An all-electric nation is about twice as efficient as a fossil fuel nation. That means that the problem of electrifying America is only half as hard as we’ve been told it was. A just energy transition isn’t a transition to ecology austerity — you can have better, cheaper versions of the stuff you love.

IV. The Dawn of Everything by David Graeber and David Wengrow
The most important book I read in 2022. Its core argument: that the shape of societies — hierarchical or non, authoritarian or free — is not foreordained by our technology or living arrangements. We are free to choose who we want to be: equal or unequal, coercive or free, warlike or peaceful. A dizzying, thorough, beautifully told series of histories of ancient civilizations, many of which have only come into focus thanks to recent advances in archaeological technology. They show that every conceivable variation on centralization, coercion, hierarchy, violence, agriculture and urbanism has existed, in multiple places, for hundreds or thousands of years at a time.

V. How to Take Over the World by Ryan North
A popular science book that tours a wide-ranging set of technological ideas by means of explaining how to realize the supervillain plots so beloved of Marvel comics. It’s full of extremely funny, extremely informative riffs that make for an engrossing frame for very deep dives into knowledge that are esoteric, interdisciplinary, and damned interesting.

VI. The High Sierra by Kim Stanley Robinson
A unique and profound piece of western literature. The key is in that subtitle: “A Love Story.” It’s a memoir, of how Robinson came to be a Sierra person, starting with a reckless adventure in the mountains while tripping on LSD, wildly unprepared but young and vigorous and lucky. It’s a story about the physical being of the Sierra. The Sierra is revealed as the source of Robinson’s novelistic pastoralism — the vividness of the Martian hills, of space station interiors, of Antarctica. All of those descriptions are thinly veiled Sierras, like a set of stock characters in a novelist’s ensemble cast who are stand-ins for the people in his life.
It’s a story about the problems of the Sierras. The colonialism. The genocide. The place-names honoring the monsters of history, butted up against names commemorating heroes and lovers of the place, some settler colonialists, some First Nations. The ecocide, going back to the drowning of the Hetch Hetchy basin, not just to create a reservoir but to demoralize the advocates for nature and wilderness, scatter them so powerful men could continue to seize and destroy wild places.
It’s a story about living with the Sierras. Robinson recounts the history of the summer settlements — the places where First Nations people would come, year after year, for centuries, for fellowship and interchange and ritual. He tells the tale of the Sierra Club, the men — and especially the women — who loved the Sierras and whom the Sierra loved back.
Robinson made me fall in love with a place I’ve never been, and miss it even though I’ve never known it.

VII. Ways of Being by James Bridle
A big, lyrical, strange and inspiring book about the “more than human world” — a world that encompasses the worldview of animals, ecosystems, and software. “Inanimate” objects — a homebrew self-driving car and a recommendation algorithm — both have distinct worldviews (umwelts). Our own umwelt and desires impact these inanimate objects, too; we are inextricably tangled up with them. Their actions result from our actions, and our actions result from theirs.
The whole world — from microscopic organisms that are neither animals nor plants to birds to primates, to plants and the fungi that interpenetrate and coexist with their root cells — is part of this phenomenon. Indeed, the interconnectedness of everything is so profound and so undeniable that any close examination of any phenomenon, being, or object leads to the inescapable conclusion that it can’t be understood as a separate, standalone thing, separate from everything else.

An open letter to Tidal Streaming
I am both an artist ( 33 Bowls ) with material on Tidal and a satisfied, so far, customer. I know what my music sounded like and sounds like, and can state unequivocally that MQA is closer to the real thing than even hi-res HD PCM; the nuances, the textures, the relaxed ease of listening, the details, the space, the timing, the soul of the music are present with MQA in ways that, as good as HD PCM can sound, are simply not quite there with HD PCM (erroneously referred to as HD FLAC, more on that later). Compared to MQA, PCM (including “HD” high bit rate PCM) also has a glare, zing, edge that on some systems can sound brighter and therefore be mis-interpreted as better --- when in fact that is an artifact of PCM sampling that MQA uniquely ameliorates. When you listen to a good MQA demo at a salon, studio or show, you will understand why major players in the music biz have enthusiastically embraced MQA, with 20 Million tracks to date mastered in MQA.
It is understandable but not commendable for Tidal’s new management to hedge their bets on MQA. However, such a backtrack away from the customer base that Tidal built their reputation upon is not necessarily the brightest business strategy. Is Tidal management counting on very short term memory of the existing customer base when backtracking away from the millions of MQA mastered and remastered tracks described by Tidal as this?
“Master. Authenticated files from mastering process. Studio quality. Unrivaled clarity and depth.”
Going after a minority of customers from a smaller competitor while alienating existing customers will “bite you in the butt” eventually. Don’t alienate your existing customer base. All it will take is one streaming competitor, larger or smaller, hosting the millions of MQA tracks that already exist. It would behoove Tidal to pay attention to actual current long term Tidal customers who are the customer base and word of mouth that Tidal has built the business upon, and ignore haters and trolls who are not actually current Tidal customers.
Adding more customer choices, in this case, formats, is usually a good thing, however, excluding an existing customers’ preference as a default option is just plain short sighted.
See, if instead of being swayed by a small but shrill group of sock puppet trolls, haters, and shills, if you actually listen to a good MQA demo at a salon, studio or show, you will understand why major players in the music biz have enthusiastically embraced MQA as evidenced by 20 Million tracks to date mastered in MQA.
Unlike the hodge poge of so called “hi-res” HD PCM and DSD formats vying for attention as incremental improvement at an exponential cost of bandwidth and file size; with no standardized conjugate reconstruction filters, that all to varying degrees have inherent audible time smear aka temporal blur from gibbs phenomena pre and post ringing on transients; while providing no authentication --- no other format or process can do what MQA does: elegantly, efficiently and accurately reproducing all of the music end to end; being backwards compatible with existing equipment and infrastructure, and being able to clean up existing digital masters.
As to the misnomer of “specialized decoder” --- not needed. As MQA is backwards compatible, MQA files can play back with improved fidelity on legacy 1fs 44.1/48 DACs and decoders with no USB driver issues. So called hi-res HD PCM “FLAC” files are not plug and play, and do actually need specialized drivers, hardware and software. For instance, Tidal Desktop with MQA software decoding, aka first unfold enabled, feeding an R2R DAC can sound quite nice. Such an option as default needs to remain in future updates of Tidal Desktop, Android and Apple apps.
It’s ludicrous that this needs to be explained again: FLAC is a container, not the contents. When streaming bit perfect PCM material, whether CD quality 44.1/16, or so called hi-res HD PCM, or authenticated MQA, bit perfect lossless bit packing that FLAC uses was invented by the same Bob Stuart who also happens to be a co-developer of MQA. So, he wrote the book on that. He knows what he is doing. More here:

In summary: the internet is full of obnoxious sock puppets, trolls, haters, shills. You should know better than to listen to or be swayed by them. There are good reasons why top recording engineers, producers, mastering engineers prefer MQA as closer to the source than other formats and processes. Take good care of MQA, as MQA has taken good care of you, and will continue to do so, if you are up for it.
Update: 
It appears that at least some of the tracks that Tidal is now claiming are HD PCM “Tidal max” are likely up-sampled MQA 44.1k or 48k folded tracks. One label states that their streamed tracks, directly or via aggregator, are all MQA, and that none have been resubmitted as 96k or 192k HD PCM. Unlike MQA’s inclusion of embedded proof of provenance coded and buried in the dither, to indicate that the bitstream is bit for bit perfect from the studio, the flac container has no such provision for authentication. So, HD PCM “Tidal max” files could be upsampled versions of folded MQA sources, and there is no way to prove or disprove that assertion, except to perform real time FFTs of the files. And, there is more to MQA than just sample rate: correct conjugate filtering with minimal time smear or dispersion on transients also known as de-blurring is a perceptually significant feature of MQA, which is ruined when an MQA file is up-sampled rather than unfolded. Max, as HD or high bit rate PCM delivered via FLAC container as a “preferred” default is a step backwards compared to the excellent sonics of MQA, also delivered via FLAC container.

Inventions that Pave the Way for Green Hydrogen Fuel Cells - Technology Org
It would be a challenge for any scientist to match Alexey Serov’s rate of inventions related to green hydrogen fuel. Serov, a researcher at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory has 84 patents with at least 35 more under review, so his electrifying pace is unlikely to slow down any time soon.

Serov’s research focuses on the materials and performance of fuel cells that power electric vehicles or buildings by converting hydrogen and oxygen into heat, water and electricity. Fuel cells create energy through an electrochemical reaction rather than by burning liquid fuel like gasoline or diesel.
Producing and using hydrogen fuel requires a somewhat circular procedure. First, a process called electrolysis splits water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen inside a device called an electrolyzer. That hydrogen then recombines with oxygen in a fuel cell to generate electricity. The interrelated nature of these steps means that improvements to either step can benefit the whole system.
When the electricity powering electrolysis comes from a clean energy source like wind or solar, the resulting product is called “green” hydrogen because its entire life cycle generates no climate-changing air pollution.
Serov’s inventions enhance all the steps from generating to using green hydrogen. His research in the Energy Science and Technology Directorate spans materials, devices like electrolyzers and the catalysts that set off the reactions.

Materials to manufacturing
Both electrolyzers and fuel cells have parts similar to a battery: positively and negatively charged electrodes which trade ions through an electrolyte sandwiched between. An electrocatalyst at the surface of the electrodes triggers a chemical reaction that separates or combines hydrogen and oxygen.
An effective electrocatalyst is key to the overall fuel cell performance. Today, electrocatalysts are usually made from expensive metals in the platinum group that are among the rarest on Earth.
“Decreasing the platinum group metals decreases system efficiency and longevity, so you produce less product for the same price over time,” Serov said. “One option is improving that expensive system. But we are also looking for a more abundant and cheaper material. Even if it’s less active, we could afford using more of it.”
However, adding more material increases the size and weight of fuel cells. A large system won’t fit under the hood of a truck, although it could be used to power a home or to back up an electrical system. Serov is working on various technologies to balance these tricky tradeoffs.
Serov is unusual in not only improving fuel cell technology but also transitioning it to mass production. He is providing national leadership as deputy director of a new DOE Roll-2-Roll, or R2R, a multilab collaboration to scale up production of electrocatalyst materials as well as speed up electrode production processes.
Home to the country’s largest open-access center for battery manufacturing research and development, ORNL offers unusual opportunities to scale up laboratory discoveries using roll-to-roll and thermal analysis equipment, electron microscopes and other specialized tools in its Battery Manufacturing Facility.
The inventing of an inventor
Thanks to Serov’s mother, a physician, his childhood home in a Russian village stayed well-supplied with chemistry books. By his first year of high school, he was already hooked on laboratory experiments.
A summer camp, held in his region by Moscow State University, cemented his desire to be a chemist and attend that college, where he earned several degrees before joining the faculty as an organic chemistry researcher.
When Samsung SDI recruited Serov at a job fair, he packed off to South Korea to develop innovative fuel cells, beginning his track record of patents. His subsequent doctoral research took him in the new direction of studying short-lived, highly radioactive isotopes at the University of Bern in Switzerland. That research provided the chance to be part of the first experiments determining the chemical properties of two human-made elements, copernicium and flerovium.
After South Korea and Switzerland, Serov’s next move took him to the United States. In each case, he jumped at a professional opportunity that piqued his interest, despite never having visited the country or studied the local language, except for English. Nevertheless, these choices weren’t hard for Serov: Besides his wife and two kids, his two great passions are travel and chemistry.
“My curiosity led me to making reactions, the physics of elementary particles, and real-world applications,” Serov said. “Research related to fuel cells allows me to combine those interests to solve very challenging scientific and applied problems.”
In his new job at the University of New Mexico, where Serov eventually became an associate research professor, he developed ways to make hydrogen fuel cells more affordable. “Around 2012, we found a nice class of materials that was a really good substitute for platinum in the fuel cell,” said Serov.
Made from iron, carbon and nitrogen, this material could be made anywhere from partially burned biological or other organic materials and was literally dirt cheap. Serov served as chief scientist to a startup company that licensed the innovation.
The venture was successful, but once the technology matured, Serov began pining for new discoveries. That’s what brought him to ORNL in 2021.
“Alexey is a passionate and creative scientist whose skill sets in both materials science and green energy applications bring a unique perspective that seemingly moves ideas from a very small scale to demonstration,” said Ilias Belharouak, ORNL corporate fellow and head of the lab’s electrification section.
“His inventions and work on catalysis and the production and use of hydrogen have the potential to make hydrogen-powered storage and conversion devices substantial players in the decarbonization of our economy.”
At ORNL, Serov expanded his focus to include not only utilizing hydrogen fuel but producing it and using it for purposes outside transportation.
“Initially water electrolysis was mainly targeted to creating hydrogen for automobiles, especially heavy-duty trucks,” Serov said. “Now that we have a more holistic picture, we know it can be used in practically all sectors of the economy, leading to rapid decarbonization of industry.”
For example, hydrogen chemical synthesis is used in producing ammonia and other industrial chemicals. Hydrogen can be substituted for the coke used in making steel, eliminating carbon dioxide emissions. Hydrogen cells could also potentially be used to create long-term electric grid storage for the excess energy produced by solar and wind farms.
Serov represents ORNL in three other DOE hydrogen research initiatives which address various stages of hydrogen fuel cell development and rollout. For example, the Million Mile Fuel Cell Truck Consortium works to commercialize hydrogen-powered long haul trucks with zero emissions.
However, those trucks won’t be practical unless hydrogen fuel prices drop. To cut costs, the H2NEW Consortium seeks to reduce the amount of the platinum group metal iridium in the catalyst while keeping fuel cell efficiency.
“To meet demand in the next decade, we’d need to use all the iridium mined per year for electrolyzers,” Serov said. “That’s impossible, since it’s also used to make components for smart phones, lasers and other products.”
Serov has been working on the iridium problem from the recycling angle, too. Efficient recycling methods could extend the supply, reducing the need to mine it. Unfortunately, today’s recycling processes take 180 to 240 days to process the iridium from electrolyzer stacks.
Serov has applied for a patent on a method he developed, which dissolves metallic iridium in less than three days. He says this milestone could be his most important invention yet.
