Burial Blade and Blade of Mercy are made out of meteorite, but WHY? Inspiration and context behind them (+ the source of snake infestation)
This one is a reply on ask from @bobbyzombiegg that I decided to put here because I really keep forgetting to use THIS blog for lore and not my personal/shitposts one...
Tumblr media
I know, and this is such a good observation! I am glad that you've noticed what else connects Burial Blade and Blade of Mercy! Even better - whereas Burial Blade severs the ties of a person with the Dream, Blade of Mercy, in a way, helps to create it!
Tumblr media
The interesting thing about these blades is that, of course, they must have been created before the conception of the Hunter's Dream! It makes it oddly coincidental that both weapons are useful for the cycle of Dream and Hunt, doesn't it? Blade of Mercy is at least believed to contribute to this as of now; the more we hunt the more messengers get added in the Hunter's Dream, so, perhaps, Blade of Mercy is not necessary! My personal interpretation of this is as Paleblood Hunter, our character has the privilege otherwise special for these weapons! Regardless of which weapon they use, they can send those they killed to be messengers (or add them in the cycle of the hunt, like how Henryk or Yamamura will become summonable after we kill them)!
Still, it starts to look like too much was planned ahead? Blade of Mercy said to be made in an old workshop would imply Old Hunters, likely created by Gehrman himself, from the same material as his own weapon! But I think the answer here is that Messengers, something akin to Hunter's Dream and similar weapons existed since Pthumerian times!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Starting with the weapons observation here! Pthumerian Descendant, interestingly, displays the similar style of transforming their blade into two same as how Blade of Mercy does it! Meanwhile, Gehrman's blade is fashioned similarly to Mergo's Wet Nurse's blades! In isolation, I would not think this means anything.. but crows, according to Hunters of Hunters lore, ARE connected with taking the souls and passing them into Dream realm, which is also Nightmare realm!
Tumblr media
(Link to my other post explaining why Vilebloods descend from Pthumerians ( x ) in case someone who doesn't know already finds this post)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wet Nurse herself is very bird-like (crow-like, specifically), and very coincidentally, Baneful Chanters pray to those who "have no blood" as those who'd have enough power to curse the hunters (which is to ensure they go in the Nightmare realm). Wet Nurse not only coincidentally fuels at least one section of Nightmare by nurturing Mergo, the center of it, but also, Nightmare realm has Winter Lanterns whose heads are made of Messengers!
Tumblr media
So we have: Wet Nurse already being quite Pthumerian with her accessories and fighting style, Pthumerians and their descendants (down to Cainhurst!) honoring symbolism of crows, Yharnam (a city named after Queen Yharnam, after all) having depiction of BIRD-like Messenger in its oldest part, superstition about crows taking souls of the murdered in Hunter's Dream, people praying to "bloodless ones" to take the souls into Nightmare instead + evidence of it happening with Winter Lanterns.. In my opinion it is fair to assume that the weapons Gehrman created had a pre-existing inspiration and their similarity to pre-existing Pthumerian weapons is not coincidental!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alright, first - I want a Bloodborne prequel where I could make a Pthumerian Paleblood Hunter. Second, as you can see, concept of the Messengers, the "Hunter" symbol/rune (depiction of the hanged man of course), and even the MOONLIGHT Sword were a thing since Pthumerian times! (It is safe to assume Ludwig found this sword somewhere in the Dungeons, as obtaining Radiant Sword Hunter badge is what lets you buy Tomb Prospector set!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
^ The note already mentioning Laurence associating with Moon Presence, THE Great One of the Hunt and the Dream, is found in Byrgenwerth already! Basically? Without maybe predicting that he would be trapped in the Hunter's Dream one day, Gehrman already knew what he was doing with the weapons.
Conclusion: there was the clear idea in mind! Blade of Mercy, intended to kill people from the start, immortalises the hunters as the HUNTERS and brings them in "Heaven" of Moon Presence, before they turned into beasts, whereas Burial Blade, initially intended for hunting everyone that was no longer human (for example, poor Fish People), ensures they, on the contrary, never go to "Heaven". What later serves to sever a Hunter from the Hunter's Dream initially intended to sever non-humans from it, in a way sentensing them to "Hell". :) Gehrman is a fun person.
+ Also some bonus observations regarding the topic of Yharnamites still continuing Pthumerian traditions, likely brought back because of Byrgenwerth, and then Healing Church, diving into dungeons:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Context for those that didn't play Bloodborne because Sony hates you and you in particular: both this trap in the dungeons and this bath in Yahar'gul warp you in another area, connected by the circle of candles)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Forbidden Woods, surrounding Byrgenwerth, are full of formations that resemble the Tonsil Stone very much! However, when you examine the woods, you will see that sometimes there are body parts near these "heads"! This could be another case of petrification upon strong arcane impact, similarly to petrified body of Rom near Ebrietas, to petrified bodies of other Kin in Upper Cathedrals covered by fabric, bodies of victims in Yahar'gul, all that!
Were they people living in the woods that started to turn into Kin (like Garden of Eyes that are also found in Byrgenwerth) but didn't live until petrification, or were they baby Great Ones born only to instantly die? I am not sure. Both can work.
But, snakes are an interesting clue here. Besides Forbidden Woods, they are only also found in Hintertombs - a dumping ground for corpses of Pthumeru Ihyll that became venomous! Forgotten Madman, who is a former Choir member as he uses A Call Beyond, is found in these dungeons + getting Cosmic Watcher Badge is what lets you buy Poisonous Knife. Doesn't it look strange for Choir members to pick so much interest in this? Snake infestation might be a strange result of burying cosmic Kin in the ground, a corruption of what would normally be a process of multiple parasites/phantasms settling in a corpse of a cosmic being, OR someone affiliated with one! We do have precedents:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cosmic creatures, "downgraded" and "filthied", becoming something eartly instead, such as snakes! One of them was able to raise human children (Madaras twins), so sure they are unusual!
So, what I am trying to say is, it is possible that Tonsil Stone is a result of burial of a dead (and rapidly petrifying) cosmic Kin, one that was yet not rotted like what we see in Forbidden Woods! Maybe even more directly so, it is a petrified skull of a cosmic Kin, most likely of Amygdala's kind, and a "meteorite" in the sense of them coming from space! So, creating weapons both of which are connected with burial ritual from the buried Kin is appropriate! This or similar technology maybe also was discovered by Pthumerians long ago, so examining Hintertombs was a great help with figuring what material to use for Burial Blade and Blade of Mercy!
Tumblr media
^ These disturbing dead cosmic Kin fetuses are found in Byrgenwerth in two forms: one depicts a petrified corpse, something we already knows happens with Kin, such as Rom and eldrich creatures in Upper Cathedral. Another is dead, rotting, showing horns, and has multiple tiny skulls on its head! The latter one gets my point about corpses of Kin, or maybe anyone touched by Kin, sprouting smaller life forms from within. People infected by snake virus sprout several snakes from their heads, rather than turning into a snake or something!
It is entirely possible that Byrgenwerth used to bury creatures like this in the grounds around the college, and that those gigantic graves in Forbidden Woods were for much larger Great Ones: "Hunt the Great Ones. Hunt the Great Ones." note is found in Byrgenwerth as well! They might have been able to resist the full rotting that results into snakes due to their size and development, hence their graves still show sluggish phantasms. Burying other ones, on the other hand, was a big mistake. Or, should I say.... a GRAVE mista- *gets sniped*
_________________________________
These are my thoughts on the topic! You kinda got two theories at the price of one here, but snake infestation was somewhat relevant in the context of burial and my idea of what IS this "meteorite"! Thank you so much for prompting me to tie this theory together at last!!

Wait a minute
Queen Annalise is descended from a long line of God favoured super humans? I think I miss that, can you explain it to me?
Oh yeah, pardon my lack of elaboration, but basically, since Annalise is from Cainhurst and a Vileblood and has special blood that allows her to bear a Child of Blood like Queen Yharnam, this implies she descended from the Pthumerians.
There are tons of other hints in Cainhurst where we can see how the Vilebloods were the long-distant offspring/relatives of the Pthumerian people as well.
The Pthumerians themselves were inhuman and very closely linked with the Great Ones, even to the point where their queen was seemingly “betrothed” to one of the gods and was pregnant with Mergo, who is basically a stillborn cosmic baby.
So, you could basically say they were “favored” by the gods, hence why Byrgenwerth was also hellbent on studying…ascension and all.
Annalise herself is kinda superhuman with her immortality and all. Makes you wonder how she achieved that, or better yet, how she was created. *evil laughter*

Also, really though! The fact that 1) statues of Messengers are found across the dungeons 2) Hunter rune/mark existed since Pthumerians and is found usually on gravestones 3) Holy Moonlight Sword was "discovered" and 4) Healing Church figured from SOMEwhere how to make a Hunter's Dream?
It is super likely that not only Pthumerians fell like humans are going to now, but they also DID have their own version of the Dream! Yet again, Bloodborne prequel has way more potential than Bloodborne sequel. Imagine an extra DLC where we'd get to see Pthumerian civilisations at their prime and play as one of those beta dreaming hunters. Let me create a Pthumerian MC From

wrote down a bunch of pthumerian headcanons
skin tones vary from snow white, to greys and blues. they have wide mouths with sharp teeth in front with molars in back. much of what they eat is the vegetation and fungi that grows underground, and rarely meat-- since most of the animals are toxic in some way and can be difficult to properly prepare. they do regularly drink blood from each other, however, for various reasons.
they have claws but many may choose to trim them down.
eyes are typically dark, and they are accustomed to living in darkness and twilight.
completely hairless except for the scalp, though it is common enough for them to be bald here as well (whatever their sex is). hair is typically black, white, or silver.
body hair, including facial hair, is rare. more likely if they have any humans in their ancestry, but not required.
pthumerians have elongated body proportions compared to humans, particularly in the limbs and digits.
adults are often much taller than the average grown human.
pthumerians rarely die of "old age" and continue growing taller throughout their lives, though it slows down to a point that is barely perceptible after adulthood. growth rates can vary widely among individuals.
giant pthumerians aren't necessarily ancients though-- they just have wack growth rates. (either naturally, or induced by... something else)
they also have a much better sense of smell than humans do. it is said that pthumerians, especially those deeply connected to the arcane, smell naturally of lumenflowers.
humans and pthumerians are sexually compatible. pthumerians successfully reproduce at a much lower rate, though. Their naturally longer lives make it less necessary.
normally, offspring between these two should be sterile, but....
pthumerians are often physically much stronger than they appear, and use arcane magic and pyromancy much more easily than humans, but their comparatively lower population puts them at a numbers disadvantage against humans.
their language is eldritch in nature and difficult for those unaccustomed to the sounds to speak properly, or even learn. Most pthumerians can at least understand human language though, even if they can’t/won’t speak it.
pthumerians have no taboo against nudity, even among mixed sexes. clothing is worn for things like functionality, fashion, to display their rank, but isn't actually required.
some pthumerians keep giant rats as companions and service animals. they are often trained to detect hidden, forgotten traps.
they also have domestic dogs and cats, which originally came from the surface. there is the other variety of “dog” as well, with long tongues and horns and natural pyromancy. they appear to have been native to the underground, but it is unknown where they actually came from. these dogs are technically still wild and not a companion for the average pthumerian, and absolutely not for most humans. (not that they haven't tried)

Ok so I was trying to look for the origin/ inspiration behind Simon's bowblade (who is probably Persian/indian so he's probably a neighbor to Eileen country help XD) and I realized something, maybe.
You see there is other blades that are in the form of wave/ zigzag. Logarius sword, the pthumerians daggers, queen Yharnam dagger, even a bit of the cainhurst widows so I thought of something
WHAT IF! What if, actually ALL the pthumerians came from Loran (who's next to a desert so Middle East/near east type of country), and a part escape/ went away from the scourge and create Pthumeru/Isz along the way more in the west?
But if Pthumeru is the tomb of the gods that mean they took them along the way 🤔 or maybe the "old lords" died because of what happened in Loran and they just did grave for them and that's why they crown themselves some leader in Pthumeru hm...
ok the undulated swords are called a kriss! it's Indonesian apparently
see next post!

The chubby Pthumerians found in the chalice dungeons fattened themselves on purpose, kind of like sumo ringers or roman gladiators. Their layers of body fat protect them from blows and make them able to perform heavyweight attacks which normally Pthumerians are hardly capable of.

Why does the Watchdog of the Old Lords exist? I don't mean I'm lamenting how hard of a fight it is, I mean why is it on fire. It's a "true" beast so it takes more damage from serration, and is thus on the same level as scourge and cleric beasts, but the entire monster is on fire, the weakness of beasts. Another strange thing is that the beast-possessed-soul has fire abilities despite also being a beast. Normally I'd say that it may be one of the keeper's dogs that got infected, but those dogs have horns, while the watchdog doesn't. Also, the keeper's dogs follow silver beasts which is even stranger. I guess this could be the dogs following their previous masters even after they succumbed to the scourge. The description for the keeper's hat says they committed a certain sin. It's probably a reference to dark souls and the first sin, but maybe it could refer to the creation of the big Watchdogs? When looking at the watchdog, it looks even more unnatural than the keeper's dogs do. Also the silver beasts definitely aren't created from the keeper's as the keepers have 8 eyes.
Tumblr media
Another weird thing are the loran clerics. They also have similar horns to the keeper's dogs and wield fire while being beasts. Maybe they created the keeper's dogs somehow? Another weird thing is that they drop coldblood flowers. And blooming ones as well. You should check out katypersonal's theory on those too. Coldblood is apparently a person's final will made form. If we assume coldblood is literally cold blood that hardened into a ball then that makes this even weirder considering that loran clerics use fire. They also don't drop coldblood which is strange. I don't have any solid theory on this stuff, but what I do want is for more people to start talking about these things. If you got any ideas about this stuff please share them.

Pthumerian eyes
Had a discussion about Chapel Dweller's looks in this reply ( x ), but decided to repost for reference purposes!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
1) Pthumerians DO have pupils, and some like Snatchers even have pretty 'normal' eyes!
2) Bell-Ringing Woman's pupils are brighter than her whites, and Church Servant's pupil in the game look pale. Makes me think that some Pthumerians' pupils can reflect light, like cats xD
Tumblr media
3) Pitch-black "alien" eyes seem to be specific for the undead Pthumerians that we find in Chalice Dungeons!
Tumblr media
4) Whereas pure white eyes of Lost Child of Antiquity are likely a Pthumerian thing (this mob is found in Pthumeru Ihyll and in Cainhurst that descends from Pthumeru Ihyll), Loran Clerics might have had their eyes turned white from blood and beasthood (which you can see happens with humans too). Notice that Loran Clerics do have pupils, they're just blinded now, unlike Pthumerians that have more 'pure' white eyes!
5) Some of those screenshots from the dungeons enemies are fucking spooky, lol
6) I don't know how far gone in being undead/immortal Annalise has gone, but what if under her mask she has the similar spooky look of pitch black eyes and mouth that when open looks like a vacuum to suck in your soul specifically?
7) Do you think Djura started to connect the dots between beasthood and humanity not because he is so damn smart, but because he himself started to face the effects upon losing eye color?
8) Okay I am sidetracking
9) @val-of-the-north provided all these screenshots. Actually in terms of visual references, you guys totally should always ask him first and not me. I am more of text and compilations man, but he is the visual man xd

No, ok but it’s just interesting to me that we have TWO instances of running into black-clad body guards of some notorious queen in Bloodborne, and both drop Blood Rapture.
Think about Queen Yharnam. She lost her child, her people, and when we fight her we can summon this seemingly rogue executioner named Queen-Killer who evidently has some vendetta against her. She also has mysterious nameless Shadows defending her that are oddly…lore-less? But we can see them use Eastern-coded weaponry and powerful magic.
For Queen Annalise, it’s very similar. She has lost her child and her people, and we meet the Executioner Alfred, who makes it his entire goal to kill her. We also know that she once had an elite faction of guards/shadows that defended her, but only one seemingly remains in the Grand Cathedral. Another nameless, seemingly lore-less warrior with an Eastern-coded blade and strange abilities/strength.
The remnants of the two queens’ defense factions are just scattered and opposed by singular members of the Healing Church.

Also do you have any headcanons about Pthumerians?
Yeah, I do! They might be a bit hard to organize, though, since I scatter them everywhere 🤔 I will try, though!
🗡️ I do think that Pthumerians and humans can mix and have hybrid children! They're both humanoids, the unification of "beasts" and "aliens"... Though I am still not sure whether Flora and Fauna (The Great One beast) created them, or simply took the domain over them. But Maria, for example, is partially Pthumerian! Logarius is a Pthumerian almost entirely. Laurence and Henryk's family have a lot of Loran blood in them, etc. So much mixing happened mostly because long ago, Pthumerians seriously messed with the cosmos and beasthood, and the surviving, least afflicted ones had to flee elsewhere, resulting in having many families with humans in other civilizations.
+ I also think that Fishing Hamlet people are a group of mixed Pthumerians and humans too! They speak "English" (simply whatever the local language is), but also show some very Pthumerian things - the 'skull' shaped spirits as their weapon like what we saw from Logarius (but their is purple, not red) and the gigantic variant of their species (Shark Giants).
Tumblr media
💀 Yes, speaking of that! They have gigantic variants. x) Church Giants are gigantic variant of Church Servants, Undead Giants are gigantic variant of the Pthumerians from the dungeons, etc. Huge size and strength does come at the cost of large intellectual gap. Also, Pthumerians have racial variety just as humans! Whereas humans have beige or variants of brown skin, Pthumerians have bleach white or variants of grey skin!
🗡️ Annalise is a far descendant of Queen Yharnam herself, like the branch of Cainhurst nobles in general! But since Queen Yharnam herself could not have children after Mergo fused with her womb (likely lithopedion), it was her brother Cain that continued the bloodline. I like to think that Cain became partially a batlike monster, and this curse still dwells in the blood of this line and can manifest. So, when nobles wanted to have children, they'd have to be "selective" about their partners and seek those strong enough (and distant enough) to not let that happen! I've got this headcanon because Japanese name for Lost Child of Antiquity is 'Ancient Bastard':
Tumblr media
( x )
💀 I believe that Chalice Dungeons are way more the actual tombs than sort of a time-travel into a messy verse where events are mixed 🤔 So, Pthumerians found there are pretty much.. alive? But almost all of them lost their minds from the curses they messed with and from living too long. I already explained that theory some time, I can reshare if needed, but Yharnam we're fighting in the dungeons was a resurrected body by Mensis scholars, when her spirit is separate and dwells into Nightmare! I think so because her belly has a cut on it, as though they've extracted just the cord, since the rest of Mergo's body is just a mess of bones and crystallyzed blood ;-; Fucked up concept. On the other hand, Chapel Dweller is the biggest proof that there are friendly ones!
🗡️ Pthumerians culturally had the trend of associating red with birth, when otherwise most of their clothing was dull and grey: Bell-Ringing Women wear dark clothes but they have red variant during birth of The One Reborn, Chapel Dweller is the same type as Labyrinth Ritekeepers but in red instead of grey... This persisted in Cainhurst, too, with their typical grey noble dresses having burgundy variant for those expecting a child! I think Arianna's mother ran away while still being pregnant with her, so that's why she has that version:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
+ I think it is needless to mention that Cainhurst descends from Pthumeru Ihyll in particular 🤔 Annalise can recognize Ring of Betrothal that Queen Yharnam is wearing (it is modeled on her finger!!), there is a portrait of Bell-Ringing woman in Cainhurst, Maria displays pyromancy... All that. Meanwhile, Hemwick descends from Hintertombs: @val-of-the-north put all the evidence for the theory we've discovered together in this ( x ) post!
💀 Recently @heraldofcrow and @fantomette22 raised a discussion about Leo and silver hair in Pthumerians, and I also joined, so we ended up with some interesting bits of lore: ( x ). The conclusion we've reached is that silver hair is actually 'ideal' state of mastering the blood magic, rather than simply a common hair color for everyone! Vilebloods aspire for that, decorating themselves with imitation of silver hair flocks. I am not sure what are general colors for Pthumerians, though, since almost all of them are bald. Labyrinth Madman is an exception since he has black hair, but it is hard to say whether it is HIS hair or the "fur" growing from the bones (like Darkbeast Paarl's or black "hair" on beastly skull of Laurence). Maybe colder shades like purples and blues were more common! No, not like anime hair, I mean really desaturated.
🗡️ I think Pthumerians DID have their own variant of the Dream and the Hunt! 1) There are many Hunter runes in the dungeons (mostly on grave stones), whereas this symbol is ALSO the Hunter Mark that lets the Paleblood Hunter to reawaken 2) There are statues of Messengers in the dungeons 3) Nightmare Frontier should be created from nightmares of Loranites since we find Loran chalice and Loran beasts there 4) Ludwig's Holy Moonlight Sword was "discovered"! Whereas Ludwig's Holy Blade is inspired by HMS, the Kirkhammer is inspired by the hammer that was used to forge HMS long ago!
💀The only instances of Pthumerians speaking their language are some utterings that feel more like spells than talking 🤔 There are extracted voice files @val-of-the-north sent to me some time ago which I am not sure how to load properly, but Shadows of Yharnam, Queen Yharnam, Labyrinth Ritekeepers and Logarius utter some incomprehencible things! But Willem used to speak in similar manner when he was still going to have a battle, while casting his spells. I think Pthumerians were less verbal than us humans and mostly used "language" for magic, like spells or the runes engraved on weapons (that Healing Church ended up reposting with credit to the original artist fdshfdhs). When they'd "speak" with each other, a lot of information could be passed with just a few noises... almost like a telepathy! However, they could adapt to humans languages very easily. Chapel Dweller needed 0.1 effort speaking Yharnam's language now, Pthumeru Ihyll could quickly talk with "Japan", and so on. Their "language" is just harder to comprehend because they stayed in close proximity with Great Ones since the start, whereas humans had chance to develop their own cultures and various languages far away, in less 'mystical' environment!
🗡️ Pyromancy is a very Pthumerian thing, but there are two different types of it! One is something given by Wet Nurse in her sacrifice, so Pthumeru Ihyll could survive the plague of beasts. Another comes from Loran messing with fire and bolt both, that are, ironically, beastly.
_______________
Thank you for the ask, I tried to stay focused at my best ability!! You know how Bloodborne lore talks are: you touch one topic - you have to touch ALL of them to explain everything :')

Cainhurst & Pthumeru family tree (headcanons)
Alright there it is ! @heraldofcrow @8km-2
While I was trying to do one for Cainhurst, I got inspired and ended doing one for Pthumeru and the pthumerians' line as well...
Tumblr media
Well the numbers refers more to generations/ when the differents labyrinths were made than actual people. I skipped a few generations too I can't managed to detail it too much with individuals x) So I might use it as a timeline as well.
(yeah thanks to elden ring for me a "shadow" is now a bodyguard in bloodborne too. And the shadow of Yharnam here are either her siblings or close relatives)
Now Cainhurst!
Tumblr media
Yes it's a mess too and there's even connections where I am indecisive about (the smaller doted lines) I don't know winch one too choose but feel it's not really urgent too. And idk where to put Arianna... but I have a couple ideas so idk. There's a few ocs I didn't put as well but for now it's not really important.
This one is essentially for my main fic. Because alternatively in some other AUs, I wouldn't be surprised if Annalise, Maria and half of the persons on the paintings are all siblings XD + the lil 10mins idea AU where Gehrman is maria's dad (completely separated universe from this one) I guess it's dear Lady Evelyn that would be the mom x).
Also in my headcanon the symbol of Cainhurst represent the two "beasts" or "shadows" that protected Cain's line (akin to a beast possess soul). And I hc that the first keepers of the old lords/pyromancers that decided to protected the pthumerians royals instead of the gods turned into the first beast possess soul. Then after a while pyromancers managed to stop turning into beats, at least for most of them.
