"Introducing" Memory? ( Dr. Mems :) )

The boy! This is my son, though it isn't much of a reference sheet adhhfb. He works alongside Psych, and i've heard there have been some questions about him (: A lot of information will be kept secret about them, as stuff will come later on if there's a comic made about him (and in a comic that my friend thaltro is making, that i'm not personally sure what would be spoilers in case :) ) please go check out @thaltro and Psych, asks for Memory or Psych can be directed there as well (and I will answer any asks or requests for Memory here too, though Memory is apart of a collaborative AU with thaltro) :)) further information about him will be revealed as he's further introduced <3 I have his baseline story written out, tons of background lore + interactions, and art that I haven't been able to share - but alas, here is a snippet that I don't think I can elaborate on too much

Overall though, it is a grumpy wet old cat. I will say, his original AU is "lost media" within the bounds of the multiverse. That is smoke / mist coming out of his skull, and that save star would be his soul :)

Do you consider any of your skeles to be neurodivergent? And if so, what flavor of neurospicy are they?

As someone who thought they were neurotypical until very recently (guess who was probably autistic this whole time) I'm always hesitant to put neurodivergent labels on my boys, simply because I don't want to end up misrepresenting a really serious issue. I've always believed that my characters are open to individual interpretation, and if you look at one of them and see yourself/your own neurodivergency reflected in them, the last thing you need is me clumsily rolling in and going UHMMM ACTUALLY THEY HAVE [insert completely incorrect view on mental illness] SORRY.

If you look at one of my skeles, and you see a particular neurodivergency that speaks to you, it's canon. Everyone's individual interpretation is canon. That's my rules. I'm definitely interested to see what people think!

That being said, if we're looking at my individual interpretation of my boys, I do have some thoughts.

Sans: I think we can all agree this man is depressed. There's no argument there. But as someone with two siblings and a parent that have ADHD I also see a lot of inattentive ADHD reflected in him. Though his ability to read people has made him pretty good at masking his main issues, others can't help but peek through- the executive dysfunction when it comes to "basic" chores and tasks that don't interest him, hyperfocusing on a particular subject and working himself into exhaustion on his 'projects'.

Red: To me, Red has anxiety. Anyone would after living in his world- his Pap probably does too. But since weakness cannot be tolerated, his anxiousness manifests as a more acceptable outlet in the form of aggression. Even when he's with people he trusts, he finds it hard to ever completely relax, constantly restless an 'on edge'. As soon as any of his fears begin to manifest, if he can't escape, he lashes out in seemingly over-the-top manners.

Skull: PTSD is a big one. And his relationship with food isn't exactly... stellar. But also given my sudden closeness to the subject of autism Skull does seem to fit an oddly large number of those criteria. Desiring safety in mundane routine above all else, getting upset if the routines are broken. Struggles with/fears social situations, loud spaces are overwhelming, he can come across as blunt and uncaring. Unless it's his loved ones he despises being touched- and when it is his loved ones he has difficulty registering what is and isn't 'normal' and displays his affection in ways that can seem bizarre and frightening in their intensity if you don't know him.

thinking about how Papyrus is repeatedly described as tough. thinking about how the people describing him give the toughest boss fights on a no mercy route. thinking about the two toughest bosses on no mercy route being Papyrus's close loved ones, while the man himself is gone and didn't even put up a serious fight.

thinking about how absolutely terrifying Papyrus can be if he is anything less than nice.

Was talking with a friend on Discord when they pointed out just how much physical freedom Killer has when with Nightmare.

Given that the big Boss kidnapped him in order to have Killer spread negativity for him, which is basically a form of labor trafficking by the way, Nightmare surprisingly doesn’t bother to keep such a watchful eye on Killer whenever he and his SOUL are stable.

Of course, Nightmare will step in and correct Killer should he start becoming unstable or show signs of trying to step out of line. And Killer can’t travel between AUs on his own.

But he’s still able to go places. Nightmare doesn’t bother keeping a watchful eye on him when he’s on missions, he has time to dally around and even bring things he finds out on his missions — such as SOULs, monster dust, human blood — into NM’s castle without a fuss.

He can chill with cats in a random white void, while in STAGE 1, anytime he wants. He’s not forced to stay in one spot, in captivity. So long as he doesn’t think about leaving.

And he doesn’t. Because, although he isn’t physically trapped (outside of the way Nightmare can control his SOUL, of course) he’s mentally trapped.

Chara is in Killer’s head and soul. Killer’s STAGE 1 self and maybe even his STAGE 3 self are scared of them. His STAGE 4 self wants whatever Chara wants. STAGE 4 wants to obey them.

And his STAGE 2 self is too apathetic too care. It’s normal to him.

And the memory gaps and dissociation keeps him trapped. He can’t remember a lot of things. What he does remember, he can’t tell if they’re real or not. He can’t trust himself to tell if they’re real or not.

He tries to trust himself with this, hence the way he shifts into STAGE 2 before ‘reality checking’ Dream, but it inevitably fails when STAGE 2 can’t care if it’s real or not.

So STAGE 1 just tends to spend most of his days away from people, away from Nightmare, alone with his cats where no one should be able to hurt him or make him doubt himself. He tries his best to ignore the voices in his head, the sounds of Chara & his other selves mixed in with the ones of all the people he’s killed and hurt when he was in the other STAGES.

Until Color. Color, who keeps him stable and grounded and reminds him why he should try and escape whenever he forgets.

However, even with Color, a part of him still misses Nightmare. Still wants to go back, will probably always want to go back. And that’s probably why Nightmare allows him physical freedom. Because he knows that, and because it also helps garner trust.
