i’ve never been into superheroes but a zillion years ago when the first miles morales issues were coming out i bought like the first 7 and got a collection later and i coincidentally follow a nonzero number of superhero comics writing authors on twitter and i enjoy glimpses of riri williams content

i don’t have any alcohol of choice b/c i don’t like alcohol so like, vodka + enough of some kind of fruit juice to make it endurable, and along that same line almost four yrs ago i had a couple mimosas and that was alright

i like Cats and i also like birds, especially in the corvids and parrots zone, and toucans, which aren’t parrots…i also had a long-running Cetaceans phase and i still like those like, orcas, manatees….glad to know the latter aren’t endangered anymore, my fifth grade teacher drew a manatee in pastels and gave it to me, thx ms. dennee

i Enjoy scrabble and aggravation, which is this game w/ marbles which is like, 15% strategy and 85% luck so you can’t get too competitive

i haven’t played too many Video Games, especially not in recent years…i always enjoyed desktop games, like the point and click nancy drew games are my shit……later on like, portal 2 would be a great go-to game b/c usually i have a godawful hard time with Puzzles but the parameters of the puzzles in that game are so clear that i can actually enjoy it……i’m fond of amnesia tdd though i never finished it and the parameters of its puzzles are very much NOT clear. oh wait, then there’s all the shit we played via my brother’s Consoles Through The Years….the two of us taking a literal decade to beat donkey kong country….mario kart antics and driving the course backwards….we stan Galaga thanks to a namco collection and got to play it Arcade Style like a decade later at this convention lol….also on his ps4 we’d do Multiplayer stuff but really low stakes goofing around….ssbb but our real objective was just to desperately go after pokeballs and lose our shit if it was a meowth or invent really terrible maps named after pemberly (pemberdeath)….play uncharted and do terribly…….this lotr game he had was great too, like one map where we’d just ignore the Given Objective and get on horses and race around in a loop for like twenty minutes. that’s real gaming.

i was a Big Into Dinosaurs kid…….s/o to the 3d dinosaur adventure computer game…..of course i liked raptors but my sister had velociraptors as her official fave so i was like, alright, dienonychus then. i also like ankylosaurs, and i think pachycephalosaurus is another Fave….a Probably-Herbivore with a raptorous build and headbutting like goats? good stuff. parasaurolophus is good too. just Being Loud and having a weird head

my raisins take hasn’t changed but another random fact about me hmm….i’m sure it’s not news to people since i mention it enough but i was a “really great at school in terms of getting good grades in everything, but also i largely hated school and always procrastinated hw and did bare minimum studying like, the morning of (or lunch before) any test and was the worst student by effort and Study Habits alone” and so i’m like oh Fuck yes re: solidarity and respect to all dropouts (fact within fact: the only academic accreditation i have is my SAT results i guess!), yet i also have That Much respect for people who Are good at school and put in that actual effort cuz i’m like god damn i could never do that

oh fun fact!!! i’m almost sure it was like, oh wait my god i was about to say 4-5 years ago but Actually it would’ve been….8? wait no. okay yes. so 7 years ago someone kissed me but that was a unilateral thing on their part so it doesn’t count. aaaand 8 or 9 years ago i kissed a friend on the cheek as PERFORMANCE ART!!!!! no lie this visiting artist (he was very nice and chill i liked him) came to our college and gave a talk and then there was this fun lil event in our Studio Art Space where people could write down ideas for vaguely creative things to do or make and then it was just a continuous cycle of putting your Suggestions into the box and drawing out other peoples, not even taking turns or anything you just went for it, and i got that prompt to kiss someone or whatever and one of a couple friends i had there was like, yeah that’s alright, i’ll take one for the Art team. platonic artistic and who could’ve known it was Prophetic as well?? stagedorks and winston billions energies

Wendy: Blue Orange

Oh, Wendy. Here she is at the mercy of Irene and Joy, up against a wall and weathering a storm of “merong,” which is apparently a nonsense word and Red Velvet favorite. There’s something about Wendy that draws attacks like these from the other members, but before we get into why, it’s worth noting something first.

Wendy is very much a star (with international appeal -- she did a song with John Legend), and in these videos is indistinguishable from her fellow members.

Other than the always smiling thing, which usually works except for the murdery concepts like Peekaboo. But I’ll give credit to anyone who can smile while performing choreography -- that looks hard.

Here she is, also in Red Flavor, seemingly overcome with joy. I’ve always loved this shot, though “always” is misleading, because I only noticed it after a few viewings. It’s real quick and happens toward the end.

Of all Red Velvet members, though, I think Wendy is the most intriguing. At the very least, the contradictions floating around her persona suggest a more complex interior than is usual for forward-facing celebrity.

Here she is sustaining a low-res attack by Seulgi.

Wendy and Seulgi were both born in 1994, so they’re considered part of the “94-line” by fans, and do seem to be close. I suppose it’d be that way if you lived in the same room inexplicably. But when it comes to teasing/bullying, it’s only with Seulgi that Wendy seems to have an equal give-and-take.

With everyone else (especially Yeri), it seems like it’s always open season on Wendy.

(Just for fun: here’s a good Stoner Joy moment. I don’t know what’s going on, but Wendy has just fed Joy some rice and Joy just looks at her, nodding). I feel like Wendy was expecting a bigger reaction, or any reaction.

So why does this happen? I think a moment like this should begin to unravel it. Here, Wendy and Seulgi are playing a game where they have to come up with words that begin with a certain letter, and consecutively, Wendy went with “porn” and “erotica,” to Seulgi’s surprise.

Here she is low-res imitating a giraffe, at no one’s request. It’s like Wendy’s putting herself out there in that way comedians do growing up -- they develop a sense of humor about themselves so that others’ laughter doesn’t have as much effect. Reading into it too much?

Well, here’s the thing -- and yes, that is Wendy -- while K-pop groups increasingly have members of Japanese, Chinese, even Southeast Asian heritage, Red Velvet is entirely Korean. However, Wendy grew up in Canada and studied in the United States. She’s the only one who speaks fluent English (though Yeri is closing the gap there). Sometimes, she’ll talk about being shocked by Irene and Seulgi’s beauty, coming into the group as a newbie and also an outsider.

So even though at first glance, she blends right in, I can’t help but think about her as not the odd one out, but perhaps the one who thinks of herself that way.

As time goes on, she gets blonder (and sort of less Asian-looking). Leaning into the differentiation?

And you know, sometimes I wonder if the other members are jealous that Wendy can speak English in a country like South Korea, with its English-bearing storefronts on literal repeat down every street in Seoul. Resentment can come from anywhere.

And there’s another key differentiator, as a YouTube commentor pointed out: Wendy’s sense of humor is very different than the other members’. One of her characteristic moves is to be “greasy/cheesy” which is basically flirty. She’ll get close to other members and make faces and speak in a low tone, and to complete the joke, the other member squees in faux repulsion.

Here she is with Irene, where sometimes being greasy backfires. But it’s interesting: she may understand that “porn” or “erotica” is a bit more stigmatized in Korea than it is in America, and that’s why she says it, just to get the rise out of Seulgi.

I don’t know what’s going on in Wendy’s mind, but there’s certainly a scatter of pieces easy to fit together. The outsider psychology in a beauty-obsessed industry may partially explain her fluctuating weight (a source of great discussion online -- I don’t bring it up because it matters to me, although when she’s real skinny I do worry). There’s always a darker side to K-pop, which makes it a sometimes depressing subject matter to investigate. Do these girls get fed enough? Why are they even “getting” fed and not feeding themselves? It’s hard to reconcile questions like that with the bursting happiness of Red Flavor, for example, which is why the narrative I prefer for Wendy is Knowing Sad Clown. I think like any young woman, she has insecurities, and those things are heightened in company like Red Velvet, and on stage and in endless photos and videos and Tumblr blogs. She has a good sense of humor as a defense mechanism, and this makes her wiser. I hope that’s silver lining enough, but in the meantime...
