Chapter 5: Reprieve
Clarke woke at the sound of whispers and doors squeaking. She stretched her back and groaned when a kink manifested itself in her neck. As comfortable as the sofa looked, it wasn’t large or long enough to rival her king-sized bed and medium-firm mattress. A blanket was spread over her frame when she distinctly didn’t remember grabbing one during the night, and she smiled at the sweet attention.
Her stomach growling loudly reminded her she hadn’t eaten since breakfast the day before. With cheeks pink from embarrassment, she stood up and headed for the kitchen.
She found Girl there, with her back pressed against the kitchen counter, and the other female mercenary Clarke had dubbed Panther in her mind for the way she quietly stared at her.
“Morning,” Girl greeted her. “How are you?”
“Hello. I am well, thank you. I was hoping to prepare something for breakfast. Did you find any food?”
As she was looking at their surroundings, Clarke almost missed Girl signing what she had said to Panther. That explained the silent treatment, and she felt bad for not noticing earlier that the woman was deaf or hard of hearing.
Panther signed something in response that had Girl chuckle. Upon Clarke’s interrogative look, she translated. “Do you know how to cook?”
“Well…” No, she didn’t. Cliché as it was, Clarke had never boiled an egg in her life. While she had a fair understanding of how it went in theory, it would be best for everyone if she weren’t left unsupervised in the kitchen.
“Heda’s in the pantry. You should have a look at what’s available there first, and then I’ll help you prepare something.”
With a grateful nod, Clarke moved toward the door Girl had pointed at, trying not to imagine what the two women thought of her. That she was a spoiled brat, most likely, and the notion left a bitter aftertaste in her mouth. If she made it back to the palace in one piece, she would remedy the situation, she promised herself. No twenty-six-year-old, regardless of gender and social status, should be so useless in the kitchen.
As mentioned, she found Green Eyes in the pantry rummaging through the mostly empty shelves and cupboards with a frown.

Chapter 6: Rescue
“There’s a master bedroom on the ground floor,” Lexa informed Tris when she and the rest of the team arrived. “You and Aden should take it.”
Despite Aden’s efforts to keep his back straight and his chin high, the pallor of his cheeks betrayed his tiredness. He dragged his feet in the direction Lexa pointed at, not even protesting when Gustus refused to hand him back his bag and accompanied him.
Clarke claimed the other, smaller bedroom on that floor for herself, leaving the two upstairs for the rest of the team. After a quick dinner and a much longer shower to wash away the stress of the previous days, she collapsed onto the bed and was asleep as soon as her head hit the fluffy pillow. She would have slept until the morning if screams hadn’t woken her in the middle of the night.
Groggy with sleep, she stumbled out of the room and nearly collided with Lexa in the corridor.
“Clarke?” Lexa squeaked before forcing herself to stare at the ceiling. “What are you doing up?”
“I heard screams.”
As if to illustrate her point, another series of cries erupted from the first floor. The blood in Clarke’s veins froze at the sheer terror they contained.
“You should have stayed in your room and let us deal with the situation,” Lexa said before balling her fists as another cry came from the upper floor. “It’s Ryder. He suffers from PTSD. All of us do, to some extent, but his case is the most severe. Being shot at tends to increase the symptoms for a few days.”
“Shouldn’t we do something? Wake him up, perhaps?” Clarke couldn’t stand to remain immobile while Ryder screamed his throat raw, trapped in what sounded like hellish dreams.
Lexa shook her head, with her eyes firmly stuck above Clarke’s hair. “Gustus is already on it. You should stay here.”
