just take this
#I know I’m posting a lot like this recently but#I’m just so fucking tired#I tried so hard at the start of this term to make sure I wouldn’t be struggling like I normally do and then stuff happens#and my shit gets moved around in ways that are out of my control and I’m in hell again#and I just like. even when things are good at the end of the day I’m pretty consistently kinda sad#is this the fucking winter I swear to god#I think it probably comes down to the fact that I have a truly ridiculous amount to think abt rn and it’s so hard to keep track of it all#and there’s always something immediate that I need to do alongside multiple long term things which I’m chipping away at but are always there#like immediately I have two presentations to write#and less immediately I have 6 lectures to catch up on. I gotta watch two before Monday#presentations and ideally some lectures by Thursday#and then on top of that there’s the coursework we just got given that I need to think about within the next few weeks#an essay Tuesday after next#figuring out a project area which means at least 3 more meetings. ideally more#also within the next 2-3 weeks bc otherwise I won’t have time#and then on top of that hockey is starting to feel like a job.#between mounting admin I’ve been trying to keep on top of and neglecting my degree and it being so busy and having to fill in for people#who are missing#and then the new skates are better but have their own issues and the laces fucking kill my hands#I need to find time to just go to a free skate sometime but that’s not happening until the new year :/#bc I’m going home immediately after term ends bc my sister is doing a performing thing that I need to be home for to watch the dogs#so my mum can go#and then like. constantly getting new drama that **I** have to deal with for some reason bc this one girl has decided I’ve betrayed her#a ‘massive fucking betrayal’ apparently even though I barely know her and I had no idea what was going on with her#and then. the whole fucking situation with The Guy#and god this different guy after hockey tonight when we were cleaning up was complaining and made a dumb joke and I made a dumb joke#and it was. dumb. and he was like hey luke is everything okay with your degree bc you’ve been more and more tired every time I see you#and he was taking the piss but he’s Right#luke.txt

@shimmerge asked:
What are some ways you chose to honor or work with Jupiter if you do? I'm limited in my ability to do rituals and wanted to try to do smth for this Thursday since Jupiter is in my sign that day
Doing work on Thursday is a great idea, since that’s Jupiter’s day! Jupiter is the planet of expansion, prosperity, and abundance - many people think of Venus as the money planet, but Jupiter is actually the most ideal for bringing in a steady flow of ever-increasing cash. And while Mercury may be the perfect road-opener to create new opportunities, Jupiter is the one that will make sure those opportunities keep paying off.
Some basic stuff: Jupiter’s color is blue, its traditional number is 4, and its glyph looks like this. Some herbs associated with Jupiter that might be easy to find depending on where you live are dandelion, honeysuckle, and sage. Jupiterian stones are anything blue (especially sugilite and sapphire) so even if you have glass beads or fake stones, as long as they’re blue, go for it! No need for fancy rocks that cost a fortune or take up space.
Things to Do (under the cut)
Wear blue: Jupiter is known for his kingship, and what better way to honor the king than to wear his colors? If you don’t have any blue clothes, then blue nail polish, blue jewelry, or even blue lipstick can be a great way to carry his power around with you all day. For maximum effect, combine it with gold for wealth, green for money, or orange for opportunity (associated with Mercury!)
Light a blue or white candle: This is a pretty easy one as well, if you have access to both candles and fire. Carve something into it, rub it down with oil, roll it in herbs, whatever you like - or just sit gazing into the flames, the way humans have done for hundreds of thousands of years. (We are all part of something bigger than ourselves.)
Meditate: This would be a great thing to do while your candle is lit, especially if you don’t want to leave it unattended (which you should never do anyway unless it’s in a jar AND you’ve taken extra precautions!) Sit quietly somewhere you won’t be disturbed and visualize yourself having everything you want as if you already have it. What is your life like? What do you do each day? How does it make you feel? Now backtrack: visualize how you got there. See how one thing led to another which led to another, taking you all the way from where you are now to where you want to be. Feel proud of yourself! Allow yourself to be sure that things will happen just this way.
Draw a sigil: My sigil formula is symbol that reminds me what I’m trying to achieve + symbol of a thing that can help me achieve it. Trying to get more money? Doodle the glyph for Jupiter combined with a dollar sign until you come up with a design that looks nice, and there you are. Draw it in a notebook, tear it out, and hang it up. Carve it into a candle with a penknife or a paper clip. Draw it in black sharpie on something that is also black. Paint it with water on a window or a door. Draw it on an index card to put in your wallet (very appropriate for Jupiter!) Don’t like designing? Just use the symbol linked above - the important thing is that you’re making a mark with intention.
Write a petition: Write down what you want in the present tense, as if you already have it. “I am wealthy, with no financial worries for the future. I have more than enough money to buy clothes and go to restaurants. I fly first class when I travel, which I do often.” Get into detail! Be descriptive and passionate. Many people become so overwhelmed with emotion at this part that they start to cry, and that’s a good thing. When you’re finished, take the paper and burn it, bury it, throw it into running water, tear it up and throw it off a cliff, whatever. Just put it out into the universe and out of your mind, so it can do its work.
Make a vision board: Jupiter is a big, big thinker, so make something that depicts your long-term goals and your wildest dreams. It’s best to do this with your hands, as in a physical collage, but pinterest boards and tumblr aesthetics work too! The important thing is that you don’t limit yourself in your vision. Your goals are more realistic than you think.
Make big plans: You know that thing you’ve always said you were going to do? Commit to it now! Buy the guitar you’ve always been meaning to learn to play, make that big painting you’ve been thinking of for a while now, or call up your old college friend and tell them you’re planning on visiting next year. The first step is often the biggest and hardest one to take, so once that’s out of the way, the rest of the details will become a lot easier to sort out.
Do something generous: True kingship is stewardship. If there is something you have an abundance of, whether it’s time, knowledge, patience, or skill, consider giving some to a person who could use it, just to help them out. When we are generous with the world around us, we express our trust that the world will be generous with us in return.
Cook with butter or eat something deliciously fatty: Be generous with yourself too! Jupiter is not stingy with the good stuff, so don’t hold out in the name of discipline. Some great foods to incorporate would be fruit, cheese, nuts, meats, bread, pie, cake, or champagne. The king doesn’t need a reason to throw a feast, and neither do you!

ASGZ(C) hcs that bring me joy ft music
zack and i know ALL the words to WAP. every time he drives, he WILL blast it and we will both give it our absolute all. it mortifies all present company every single time and this has literally never stopped us. cloud actually finds it Really funny, much to seph's surprise. (he lowkey feels slightly betrayed for a sec)
"wow, i'm not crazy" by ajr is an inside joke between gen and me. while not cetran, he's still got a real gift with magic and materia, just like me, and it's the reason why he actually volunteered to teach me. (genesis isn't usually someone given to teaching.) it was a fun laugh about how weird we both were together, but after That Whole Degradation Thing that he barely survived, it gained a lot more meaning for the two of us.
"the gambler" by fun. always makes geal cry. it's exactly what he wants from his future, an ideal version of it where he gets to retire to some peaceful corner of the world, have kids, and take care of his garden with yours truly.
we take "out of touch" thursdays VERY seriously in this house. that is all.
genesis takes Being A Whore Bastard very seriously. in that vein, he's a big fan of going clubbing and being a thot just to get a reaction, usually roping me in whenever possible, and there's a VERY specific ed marquis remix of "pon de replay" that literally none of us are ever going to forget. as established, zack makes an excellent wingman when it comes to my ho antics, but i think i might've scarred poor cloud for life. true to form, angeal lectured gen and me the entire way home about public indecency and the unprofessionalness of that sort of "dancing", but given that he was white-knuckling the steering wheel and VERY tomato-coloured the whole time, i don't think either of us felt particularly chastened.
ever since seeing a picture of baby seph, i have been UNABLE to not think about our potential kid, esp singing vienna teng's "lullabye for a stormy night" to them. i used to sing it to zack when we first met in the SOLDIER program and he was homesick.
i'm a little like each of my boys; i've got angeal's strict moral code and devotion to what's right, genesis' white-hot temper and melodramatic streak, and sephiroth's razor-sharp mind and lack of self-regard. gen was my first friend out of the three of them and geal was the first one i trusted with my life, but rather fittingly, seph was the first one to cut me clean down the middle, metaphorically speaking. we both felt like eternal odd ducks no matter who we were around, and while i can tell the rest of my (boy)friends anything, seph is the one most likely to have struggled w similar thoughts and fears. when we were still walking on eggshells around each other, we discovered that both of us knew "achilles come down" from gang of youths (genesis really likes the tragic nature of the iliad and by g-d EVERYONE in his circle is gonna hear about it), and at different points we've sang/quoted it to the other as a reminder that we understand and are there for each other.

On the to-do list for today:
Film a mini-lecture video
Lecture!/watch presentations
Get in some exercise (we have a 2 mile walk today + some added stuff, and every Wednesday it’s a welcome thing to do after class)
Grade (ideally I’ll get through the rest of this section)
Tackle a few WIPs!
I’m hoping to get a WIP Wednesday up, but knowing me, it’ll end up on early Thursday
The Trap fic’s outline got a tweak I’m really digging, so I might start that tonight/add more to chapter one
The No-Cult AU’s got at least one fic that’s close to done, and I’d like to add more to two other entries, one of which is the holiday fic that I’m 100% going to aim for finishing by December at the latest
And the ‘How many licks?’ fic, which really doesn’t need much more to be finished, just a proper intro, some tweaks, and the conclusion to Sharky’s story
I might also fit in some more gaming depending on how efficient I am with the list, but it all comes down to how badly I drag my feet on the grading part.
Either way, I ope you’re all having a great Wednesday so far, and here’s to a great rest of the week!

News article written for Víkurfréttir about Rainbow Children, it was published on the 7th of February 2002

Translation of article:
CROWD MEETING ABOUT BULLYING IN KEFLAVÍK
A useful and great lecture on bullying
Parents flocked to Heiðar’s school on Monday night to hear and see Stefán Karl Stefánsson, actor, discuss bullying. Stefán has been traveling around the country in recent years and talked to both children and adults. There is always a need for discussion about bullying and we must find our own way to deal with it.
Tumblr media
(A large crowd was present at the meeting in Heiðar’s school)
Stefán Karl does all this on a voluntary basis with the sole aim of educating people so that there will be fewer perpetrators and victims of bullying, as he himself was in his younger years. A journalist met Stefán Karl and asked what he was doing.
"I'm just wading between schools and giving bullying lectures and putting a lot of emphasis on the home and the connection between home and school, that there is peace between them and not constant war. These two "foundations" naturally need to work together rather than against each other, especially when issues such as bullying arise, as it has been shown that neither the home nor the school can address this issue, both parties have a responsibility.
The school monitors the kids while they are there but the parents when they are at home and my lecture is a bit about shaming the parents for neglecting their children. It's something I've experienced, that neglect in society is an increasing problem and that's because people work too much and are far too little at home.
I want to get the feeling again when there was no television on Thursdays and not for a whole month in the summer and people just talked together. "
Tumblr media
Why are you doing this?
"Just ideally, I had this experience for many years when I was younger and I know the consequences of bullying, it's something that accompanies you all your life. I have watched children die, fall on their own because of the consequences of bullying, yet there seems to be little that can be done but to unite against this and keep an eye on each other.
Make the home a place that you can make mistakes and be allowed to be yourself without being criticized or criticized in any way. " said Stefán Karl in the end and then began to speak to the mass of parents who had come to listen to him.
Stefán's lecture is not very formal, but he goes from one topic to another and takes people through a whole range of emotions. The group that came to listen to him at Heiðar’s school experienced laughter, and some people got tears in their eyes when Stefán told about what he had seen in his fight against bullying.

Cry Until You’re Ladybug Red -One-sided Reveal Fic
Marinette is an ugly crier.
I’m tired, but writing helps me so here you go. A fic that was written over and over again for the last 6 hours. ENJOY SOME Light Ice ANGSTTTTTT!!!!
Marinette Dupain Cheng didn't know if it was the tension from everything and anything making it harder to peacefully sleep at night or maybe it was just her backpack collecting too many assignments. Prompting a backache that prevented her from lying down without a chorus of 'ow's following after.
The classes she came late to or missed entirely finally caught up with her. Now she was doing twice the amount of homework when others complained about the single reading assignment they had. Marinette had to fill in the blanks for lessons she wasn't presented for. Too busy to go to tutoring so setting for the blurry videos on Youtube that came close on explaining the nonsense numbers and terms.
Her lunch wasn't the once quiet break in the art studio she had before. Where she could go and express her frustration or ease in her pen marks in the shape of models. Marinette instead would scarf down what the cafeteria offered before heading off to her class representative duties. Not tasting the soggy chicken pasta on her tongue or the bitter orange juice in the carton. After-school meetings were a thing too, but often cancel for reasons or replaced by an email thread discussing something relevant. It was better than standing in a meeting with teachers she didn't know. Adding her two bits in to give the conversation another view to considered. The students. The kids her age. The same kids that seem to grow farther away as the days pass. Too into their lives to notices their leader breaking her back for them.
But Marinette couldn't stop.
She promised so much. She had to do it all.  And she knew she could do it all. She was just a little slower than she wanted. Alya often took over for Marinette's sake but Marinette still worked as if she had all the work to herself.
If Marinette had time to breathe, she had time to catch up. That was the mindset she had.
She needed every second to work and study. To sew and write. To draw and color. At one point, needing to mute her phone from her friend's group chat for being too much of a distraction.
Jagged Stone wanted art for his new album, so far Marinette just had the line art done. Which was the second hardest part when it came to designing a life-sized poster. The color scheme was set but she just needed the supplies. Double tapping on her phone to set a reminder to pick up new markers so she could play around with the hues before setting them down permanently. Bumbling to the next commission like a busy bee.
Marinette crushed facts between her teeth, answering another one of Tikki's practice history questions. Swiftly hearing a 'correct' along with a lecture of the additional facts Marinette had to remember. Know very well that they weren't sticking to her head.
Stepping on the foot pedal of her sewing machine a little faster. Quickly finishing up the hem on a Kitty Section band shirt. Swiftly tossing it with the pile with the rest. Reaching for more raw fabric before cringing.
Her math homework!
"Noooooo," she hushed, pulling up her bag to her lap. Tikki looking over chosen one's actions with a troubled look.  Marinette frantically searching for her folder. Throwing her head back when she read her reminded in the right-hand corner of her work packet.
Due and Test on Thursday.
No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No.
The test is on next week It had to be. Ms. Mendeleiev even wrote it on the board. There had to be a mistake.
Marinette picked up her phone. Tapping on her group chat to see if her nightmare was true. There, the same chat she muted, Nino asked questions about the practice packet. Which Max replied with an answer and link to a video. The more she scrolled up, the more she saw her classmates trade information on the incomplete packet sitting on her desk.
However, what really dropped her spirits was Kim's remark about how he should cancel swim practice for today to study for the test on Thursday.
Thursday.
A.k.a. tomorrow.
A.k.a. the same day Marinette had to make up a history test.
A.k.a. TOMORROW!
"No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. " Marinette gasped. Holding her breath before freaking out again.
---------
That Wednesday she didn't get a blink of sleep. Stuffing herself with formulas, history dates, and snacks from last night dinner to early breakfast to the instant she entered the class. All in hopes that it would be enough to get her by. Piecing her last brain cells together the moment she saw the board with directions to get to their seats and prep before the exam started.
That is before the alarms rang. Red light flashing as the familiar message bounced off the walls.
"Akuma Alert!.... Get away from open areas!..... Akuma Alert!... Ladybug and Chat Noir will be on the scene shortly!... Akuma Alert!... Remain calm!...."
Ms. Mendeleiev quieted the class from praising the perfectly timed alert. Pulling the first aid bag under her desk and an attendance sheet from her folder. Calling them over to make a line outside the door before they made their way with the rest of the school in one of the destinated "Akuma-Safe" locations. Done so in hopes to keep the students safe since many of the Akuma attacks, in the beginning, were reported to start at the school. It was a great way to watch over them, but it made it harder for Marinette to sneak out. Luckily, an opportunity to escape came up. Sadly, it was the thing the teachers and students were running from.
The Akuma today on the news was a giant. A silhouette made from scribbles. Like it was an unfinished sketch of a person. The lines that made up their face and hands buzzed with every motion. Their voice shaking the ground and the outline that made them 3-D.
"The world sets up those with dreams and promise to fail. Luckily, I'm here to fix what ought to be right! I'm the Correction we need!"
Right then and there, Correction (if that was their name) ripped buildings from the ground. The sounds of the broken concrete came easily as if Correction was brushing off like dirt on the structures. Masses of people were torn between jumping out of the buildings before it got too high off the ground or setting themselves in a corner. Trying not to cry.
Correction laughed as they plucked the city apart like it was a cheap lego set. Letting the buildings in their hands turn into the same scribble mess like them before setting them down.
News outlets were already streaming an eagle view of the new Paris. One that resembled sketch versions of what they once were. Correction had "corrected" 30% of Paris into their own ideal. However, it wasn't for the better. Paris became black and white. No color or grays.
It was 'yes' or 'no'. The world would be easier than way.
At least that was Correction's motivation.
Ladybug looked Correction's eyes. Hoping to see any emotion. Anything to try to reason with them before they destroyed the city and maybe even the rest of France.
"Correction. you don't have to do this. You can just stop. Things will work out."
"How would you know that!" They snapped. "You know nothing about what needs to be done!" Pulling back on Ladybug's yoyo as LB tried to keep them steady and away from the citizens evacuating the area. Pulling tighter and tighter on her yo-yo as Correction fought back.
"Ladybug, you're another bug destined to be squshed by them! I'm just trying to make the world better!"
"BY TRAPPING OF ALL PARIS UNDER YOUR REIGN? As if!" Chat Noir scoffed. "How is this better!?"
"Oppressed by those that don't care. Pushed back for the sake of being an after-thought. Voices drowned out for the nothing. That's how we are treated now by those sitting their shiny desks." Correction glared. "My world will be better than that."
LB ground her teeth in frustration as she felt her yo-yo slip from her fingers. Calling on Tikki if she could hear her to mustard up more magical strength as she tugged on the giant. "Even if people get hurt?" Ladybug huffed, her arms aching more and more with every second.
Correction hesitated for a moment. Opening their mouth to say something before shutting it as a purple outline appeared.
"Even if people get hurt." Correction answered.
-------
Ladybug had to leave before her miraculous gave out. At least that's what she said. Know very well it wasn't that.
God, she hated reporters. Lately, Akumas like Correction has been popping up. Stronger and more clever than ever. Almost matching her wits and Chat Noir's quick thinking. In the beginning, they were anxious to see the heroes fight the Akumas and almost fail. Now some of them were claiming this was on purpose.
"Ladybug and Chat Noir are in an alliance with Hawkmoth".
The infamous title of a late article immediately sparked an uproar. The author was quickly put under fire for their remarks. The Ladyblog even debunked it for the sake of Miraculous Fan Base. However, people were convinced that a stranger had some logic behind them. So started the Anti-Miraculous group.
Ladybug even had to pull back Chat once before he could give them a piece of his mind.
However, after a long day, the last thing she wanted someone, a complete stranger from the street, tell her that she's not trying. Do they not know what she does for them! Do they know how she breaks her back for the sake of Paris! How she almost lost her friends and her family due to her mask! All for a job she was just chosen for. She never wanted to be a hero! Who wants to even be a hero when the whole world seems against you. When the very ground itself wants to trip you up when you get back up.
Who even wants that?
Marinette bites her lips, landing in an alley close by the school. Keeping her tears down as she took another deep breath.
“Tikki- Spots off!”
She has to go home. She needs too. She -she needs to just leave.
If she's quick enough, she could run home and tell her mom that- no that won't work.
God, Marinette just relax.
Before Hawkmoth sends an Akuma after her. Before she even dares to hurt anyone. Before she can hurt Alya. Before she can hurt her mom and her dad.  Before she can hurt Nino and Adrien. Before she can hurt Luka. Before she can hurt Kitty Section. Before she can hurt her whole class and more. Before she can hurt Paris. Before she can hurt Tikki. Before she hurts-
"Ladybug?"
Chat.
Marinette came back to her senses. Turning around to the voice that called her. Goosebumps rising as the tension shook her soul to the core.
Adrien. Adrien saw her.
Marinette could throw up right now. Sweat running cold down her shoulders. Making her sick. Oh my kwamis, Marinette could actually throw up right now.
Adrien's mouth gaped open as his brows furrowed together. His eyes searching her face. Looking so confused in what just happened.
No.
No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No.No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No.No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No.No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No.
He saw her. He saw her. He saw Ladybug and saw Marinette Dupain Cheng.
He looks so disappointed right now.
That hot thought made the gears in her head spin. The tears turn into steam. Pumping her body to do something. Anything to stop this.
"Marinett-"
Marinette shoved Adrien on to the bricked wall. Placing her forearm again his chest to keep him there. Raising her fist to his face. Not like to be a threat, but as protection. From what. Marinette didn't know. It was just a reflex.
"Adrien Agreste. You don't speak about what you saw today to no one or anything." Marinette shushed. "If you know what good for you and for Paris."
"Got it?" She asked.
"Marinette, I-"
"ADRIEN!" She yelled. Louder than she meant to.
Her voice softens as she closed her eyes. Breathing in softly before whispering.
"Please, p-please promise me."
Her shoulders and fist sinking down. Fatigue hitting her harder than ever.
"Don't tell anyone, Adrien." Marinette huffed. Unable to say his name before her lip slipped out a sob.
"Don't tell anyone."

Back again for more online class. Initially at assembly Donna explained how every thing was going to work going back to online work. Along with that we discussed how the PDF hand in will work and what will be needed when writing it. After lunch came the crits, Zed and I were in Lucas crit group which was probably the best choice for us thanks to his expertise in digital fabrication and making. Also helps that he is our lecturer for digital fabrication and already knows the ins and outs of our project. We went first, our power point presentation that we had refined over night with updated research of bio materials and more prototypes. The information we had for our work was good, lots of research into similar works and techniques. After our presentation we had a few questions, one of them was how would the structure hold together, would it use external items like tape and glue to hold together? This is something we had considered but forgot to mention, there would be latches that would clip into one another holding the structure together, for use of a better example, like the lid of a cereal box hold together. Luca also gave us some points to think about.
How would it stand up to the elements?
Most bio-degradable materials perish quickly when exposed to the elements, so making something that can last out in the weather while also being bio degradable to the point where it can become compost would be a tough challenge. Our original idea was to use some kind of water proof cloth that could be draped over the shelter to secure it and keep it dry. One idea suggested to us by a fella in the call was to coat the shelter in a water proof spray. Hydrophobic spray has the ability to water proof what ever it sprays although I haven’t done any research into it so whether or not it will effect the bio material making it non-biodegradable, I don’t know as of this stage. Another idea pitch by Luca was instead of making it biodegradable why not just make it reusable, the phrase he used was “circular economy”, to make the shelters reusable over and over again or to make it completely recyclable into something else rather than compost. This idea relates back to the question around the elements, making it out of something more robust would make it stronger to the elements. Just need to find that middle ground.
How long would it be used for?
This question depends on a lot of things, how long till proper shelter arrives, how many people there are, location and weather, it depends. In our ideal scenario it would be around a week, temporary shelter till something else comes along. There are always external factors to think about though, if the weather conditions are bad then the shelter might deteriorate faster thus the usage time would be shorter. This is were material, design and extra features come in, if needed they could be used for a longer period of time but by no mean a long term solution.
With these ideas to think about I believe Luca will be the go to person to discuss ideas and plans going forward. The background he has with digital fabrication and the interest he has with bio-materials will be very helpful. Claudine as well considering she is doing her masters on bio-material.
Now for the PDF. Zed and I will be working separately on the PDF as most of the categories talk about showing what you have done for the project.
Project Outline: Discuss what our project consists of.
Team members: Self explanatory.
Individual contribution to project: All the research and work done by the individual.
Evidence of research: Showing off all of the combined research.
Evidence of time management: Iffy one this is, didn’t really have a planner as such, we had a google doc with our work on it but that about it.

Summary: Species of all kind are welcomed at the Whitmore Academy for the Supernaturally Gifted, but that doesn't mean they all necessarily welcome each other. Ambitious supreme witch Caroline Forbes shares a mutual loathing with arrogant yet mysterious vampire Klaus Mikaelson. A spiral of events occur when their two dueling worlds collide and they have to ask themselves, 'is it worth it'?
Chapter 3 is updated!!
I just wanna say how humbling it is that this story is being so well received. I love reading your reviews and it’s what keeps me motivated to update as quickly as I have been so thank you. Can’t stress it enough!
Under the cut is the first part of the chapter but  I would appreciate if you leave reviews on my fanfic account. But let me know if posting the full chapter on both tumblr and my ff account is preferred.
The full chapter can be found here and reviews are appreciated, as always (:
Time was passing slowly, too slowly.
Class was dragging but luckily it wasn't a difficult subject. It was a general magic course, basically beginner chemistry that every student of any kind was required to take before graduating. Caroline could practically do all of this in her sleep. What had her on edge was the news she heard just 20 minutes ago, that she had to share a class for the rest of the semester with the boy she loathes.
He seemed to be everywhere and wouldn't bug off, like a nagging pest. It was as if Klaus was making it his life mission to make Caroline's last semester as miserable as possible by forcing his way into every aspect of it.
She could barely focus on the lesson Professor Sommers was teaching with her brain scattered.
Glancing over her left shoulder she spotted Klaus who actually seemed to be paying attention to the lecture. The crease in his forehead that usually appeared when he was fixated on something visible and deep; Caroline recalled from the few times she's caught him staring at her. His eyes squinted in determination, full bottom lip trapped between his teeth and left hand rubbing his scruffy cheek while his right scribbled down notes.
- Rebel Klaus Mikaelson turned ideal student?
- Why are you studying him?
Caroline blinked out of her curiosity and discreetly cleared her throat while uncomfortably shifting in her seat. Her moves not discrete enough given that Klaus was now focusing on her from afar with an expression full of wonder; no smugness in sight. They both had some sort of radar that detected when the other was looking.
The professor continued her lecture while the two of them were staring each other down like it was a job.
- Is this foreplay for him?
Feeling like she was giving him enough of her time, Caroline rolled her eyes and turned back towards the front. Not seeing the victorious smile sketched on his face.
She straightened her back and sat up right to appear studious and focused, fighting the urge to look over at him again.
"You know, you two should do us all a favor and just fuck to get it over with already."
Caroline nearly jumped out her seat, not the least bit aware that Katherine was sitting right behind her with a teasing smirk on her lips.
She appeared out of nowhere and mouth practically in her ear; no consideration for personal space. Similar to Klaus's behavior.
- God I hate vampires.
Caroline kept her attention towards the front of the class as she harshly whispered. "Uhh, excuse me?"
Katherine rolled her eyes. "Please you and Mikaelson have been eye fucking each other for the past 10 minutes and not gonna lie, it turned me on."
"Oh my god. Are all vampires this perverted and nosy?!" Caroline strongly whispered, looking around to make sure no one was listening to them.
She shrugged. "Probably. All the ones I've met are but we're highly sensuous creatures after all, are you surprised?"
"I wouldn't know. Vampire 101 isn't really my level of expertise."
The brunette leaned forward. "Lets just say we have incredible senses and can detect sexual tension from a mile away and you and him definitely have a lot of it."
Her blush deepened.
"I have a boyfriend." Caroline clarified.
"And?"
She scoffed. "And he's the only one I have any kind of sexual tension with."
"That's not really how sexual tension works, babe."
Caroline swiftly turned in her seat. "First of all, I am not your 'babe'. I'm not your anything. Second of all, we're forced to live together and apparently have a class together but we are not friends, not even in the slightest so you cannot talk to me about things like this especially when they're not true."
"You're getting quite defensive over something that isn't true." Katherine said suggestively.
"Be- because I don't want any kind of rumors being spread about me." She stuttered. "I don't associate with vampires and never will so you and your buddy Klaus need to get a life and leave me alone." Caroline said angrily.
The brunette clicked her tongue against her teeth. "Just because we're both vampires doesn't mean we're bffs. He has no idea who I am, yet, and I only know him because it's kinda important to know who's the leader of my own faction."
"Ask me where I asked, or showed that I care." Caroline sassed before turning in her seat again with a dramatic sigh.
Katherine glared pressing her lips together as she sat back in her chair. "All I know is that the werewolf has never gotten you this hot and bothered and I've only known you for a day. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong."
The blonde stayed silent shaking away the obvious blush of her cheeks from Katherine's accusation.
- Me? Klaus Mikaelson? Sexual tension? I rather swallow a blade.
Klaus wasn't hideous, obviously. Definitely one of the most attractive boys she's ever seen with a sultry English accent to match, but his arrogance and murderous tendencies were a definite turn off. Most importantly Caroline was with Tyler, she was happy with Tyler, and it angered her that Katherine would think she'd feel that way about anyone else but him. It also sent paranoia through her mind, wondering if Katherine was the only one with these ridiculous accusations.
The professor turned on the lights, indicating the lecture was over, but made another announcement.
"For this project you will be assigned one partner, of my choosing, to conduct and present a spell. You can pick any type of spell you'd like as long as you get it approved by me first so, no hexing." She said with a small smile.
"I think she's referring to you, love." Klaus blurted.
Caroline didn't realize he was addressing her until she felt the whole class snickering while looking at her. The professor settled down the class instigating while Caroline's eyes transformed to arrows and Klaus's face was the target.
Oh, so badly did she long to slap the stupid smirk off his face until it was red and bare. She hated how much she allowed him to snoop under her skin but he was just begging for a reaction with every stupid comment he would make.
"Mister Mikaelson," The professor clapped her hands together. "What an honor to have you in yet another one of my classes this semester. Since you clearly are so enthused by this assignment, you'll be the first person to receive their partner."
Caroline began packing up her belongings so she could exit the classroom as soon as possible. Being in Klaus's presence any longer than necessary was already giving her a rash.
Her movements ceased when she heard her name, not sure if she heard the context correctly.
- No. No, no there's no way.
"What?" Caroline questioned.
"Miss Forbes, I said I'm assigning you as Mister Mikaelson's partner so get to it!" The Professor clarified. "That will be all class, I'll see you on Thursday." She dismissed.
Caroline was frozen and distraught. Face drained of color and mouth opened slightly.
"Guess you'll have plenty of time to work out that, nonexistent sexual tension huh?" Katherine giggled before throwing her backpack over her shoulder and standing from her desk.
No...no...
How can this be?
The whole class literally just witnessed how terribly chaotic these two are being in the same room, let alone working on a project together for the next two weeks.
- What the fu-
Caroline was a range of emotions from pissed to confused to pissed all over again, and she definitely was not going to allow Klaus Mikaelson to have any affect on her grade.
She quickly snatched up her bag and hurried down the stairs of the lecture hall to confront her professor who was propped up on the wooden desk reading through an essay.
Of all the professors Caroline's experienced in her academic career, Professor Sommers was definitely her favorite. Her first name Jenna, but she preferred students address her as a professor; understandable. She was only about 12 years older than Caroline, mainly why she connected best with the students but still required respect and it was given. The first year Caroline attended one of her seminars she thought she was a fellow witch due to her knowledge in magic, but learned she was actually a banshee; practicing magic was a hobby.
Given that she was of one species but followed the practices of another was admirable, at least for Caroline and felt she was a reliable ally to talk to about certain struggles. They had a great trusting relationship wrapped with mutual respect, but today was the day where they might finally butt heads.
Caroline sighed when she reached her desk area. "Professor Sommers?"
"Caroline." She acknowledged still staring down at her paper. "What do I owe the pleasure?"
Licking her lips nervously she sighed again. "I respect you Professor, you know that and would usually never question your judgment but I think it is very unwise to pair me and Mister Mikaelson together for this project."
"Mister Mikaelson? So formal, you'd think we were strangers."
"One could only dream." She mumbled.
Of course he was standing right behind her.
"I have to say Professor, me and judgy here never see eye to eye but I have to agree with her on this one. So shouldn't that be incentive enough?" Klaus claimed now standing next to an annoyed Caroline.
"Seriously?" Professor Sommers's eyebrows raised intriguingly, placing her paper on the desk and folding her hands in her lap. "And why is that?"
Caroline scoffed. "Did you not see how completely rude and disrespectful he was towards me in class just now? Imagine what I would endure for two weeks?!"
"Ah, playing the victim." Klaus sighed. "Very typical witch behavior."
Caroline slammed her hand on the desk and faced him with her other hand on her hip. "Yes, I am a witch and you're a bloodthirsty vampire which already makes us a lethal combination." Turning towards the professor again. "We can't even have a civil conversation without him insulting me."
"Pot meets kettle." Klaus growled.
"Our factions are not meant to collaborate. You understand, right?" Addressing her teacher.
"Are you two done, or should I leave the room so you can continue your marital bickering?" Professor Sommers asked rubbing her temples.
"Yes, I understand completely how things work around here, I use to be in your shoes remember?" She began. "When I attended this school it was the exact same routine. Everyone stayed with their own, but I swore to myself that when I began teaching I was going to break that cycle. That's why I decided to teach a general education course, so not only I interact with every type of student but so that you all can interact with each other as well."
Klaus and Caroline both crossed their arms as she continued.
"Vampires and witches have never gotten along, I know. I've read countless amount of history books on it and have witnessed it my whole life but I don't care. This is the place where all your prejudices go away if you want to get a good grade, but more importantly to get a better insight on the supernatural world you're living in. You need each other more than you think." She concluded.
Caroline scoffed. "I highly doubt I will ever need him for anything."
Klaus chuckled under his breath, shaking his head in disbelief.
"Well might as well get use to it because you're gonna need each other for this assignment. So you have two options: you can either be partners and guarantee yourself a good grade or you refuse to work together and receive an 'F' which means you fail the class and can't graduate this semester. Up to you?" The professor shrugged nonchalantly.
As if they had a choice.
The way both side eyed each other then dishearteningly conceded to the terms was proof of that.
"That's what I thought. See you both on Thursday." She smiled then waved them off as they walked out of class.
Klaus's shoulder purposely collided with Caroline's as they both attempted exiting through the door. His skin brushed hers chillingly making her jump back unexpectedly.
He didn't bother acknowledging her awkwardness even when she began walking ahead of him.
"You should watch where you're going, love." Klaus suggested.
The blonde growled, turning on her heel and charging back his friction until she was directly in his face.
"Listen we might be forced to work together but let's get some things clear: we are not friends okay?" She began. "We do not engage in any kind of conversation or interaction outside of this classroom and assignment, got it?"
Both of Klaus's eyebrows shot up at her demands. He wasn't sure if he was more offended or impressed.
Instead of pestering, he nodded his head. "Understood, love."
"Oh and another thing, you will stop calling me by those stupid pet names. My name isn't 'love." She hissed.
Klaus's smirk grew mischievously, making Caroline tense. His eyes appeared dangerous and amused staring back into hers.
The gulp she just initiated didn't go unnoticed by Klaus who tilted his head curiously walking towards her. His steps careful and light.
Caroline didn't realize how many steps he had taken until her back was now against the wall. Both his hands placed beside both sides of her head trapping her in his hold. The warmth of his breath fanned her reddened face. Her entire body felt hot and tingly from his stare alone. Dark eyes and dark thoughts.
Their chests nearly touching, hers heaving when she finally looked up at him. His trance took its usual effect as it dragged her in once again.
They were completely out in the open, bodies almost connecting against a drywall as if no one would walk by and see. Caroline should've been more aware of someone seeing them in this position but she found herself caring very little.
Not the way his full red lips complimented those sparkly eyes. Caroline had never been this close to him, noticing the stream of green around his iris and the blue-green hue masking the simple blue she's grown to know.
He hadn't touched her and they hadn't done anything, and nothing was going to happen, so why did she feel so dirty?
- Maybe because you aren't pushing him away?
Caroline blinked repeatedly, swallowing. "What are you doing?"
He grinned at the hoarseness in her voice. "Nothing, nothing at all. You're the one making all the rules here. You said no more pet names so I wanna know what I should call you then..." Klaus claimed. "Princess, sweetheart, Goldilocks..." He listed jokingly but sensually, twirling a strand of one of her blonde curls between his fingers.
The move so casual yet erotic.
Caroline's hands began to sweat at the feel of his finger slightly brushing her cheek. She balled her fists till her nails dug into her palms as her hair remained in his soft grasp.
She unintentionally looked down to his lips but quickly back up to his eyes.
The lump in her throat bobbed up and down from her harsh gulp. He always examined her so thoroughly it made the hairs on the back of her neck stand up.
"My name is Caroline. That's what you can call me. Clear?" She demanded still fixated on his intimidating glare.
He smirked. "Such a prude. Pet names are much more entertaining." Klaus commented twirling her hair delicately. "But all right, I'll play by your rules but just so you're clear," Moving closer into her space. "For the sake of my grade and not being expelled for murder I'll let your attitude towards me go this time. But that's the only say you'll have from here on out. I don't take demands from anyone, especially not from a prissy judgmental witch who always has her knickers in a twist."
Klaus caught her wrist mid air when she quickly raised it in an attempt to slap him across the face.
Her fiery eyes matched his that were now the threatening golden hue.
She nearly winced in pain at how hard he was holding onto her. Through all their bantering and insults Klaus never seemed genuinely upset with her, until now.
Caroline was breathing heavily, not just from the rushed motion of her attempted assault but from the burning feel of Klaus's touch. Like his hand was burning a hole into her flesh. His grip tightened as he pulled her back from the wall and closer to his chest; still keeping a short distance between their bodies. Both their faces tense and red in anger. Their breaths hot and labored fogging the air between them.
The black spidery veins outlining his cheekbones oddly fascinated Caroline, she couldn't resist staring at them. How was he able to make them appear on and off? What was the purpose?
Everything about vampires didn't make sense to her.
Noticing her lingering stares, Klaus's expression relaxed and his grip on her wrist loosened. He didn't even realize he wasn't saying anything this whole time, or remember what he planned to say initially. As if the seeing into her eyes, closely, for the first time struck an uncomfortable cord of emotion through him.
Klaus took a deep breath retreating his vampire features. Even showing her that side of who he was made him feel weak, and Caroline Forbes of all people didn't deserve to see it.
Caroline felt she was snapped back to reality when his face returned to normal. The window of fascination finally closed.
He finally dropped her hand and balled his fists together and face in front of hers.
"I wouldn't try that again." His voice low and threatening pushing his hands off the wall to create a distance between their bodies.
Of course he disappeared by the time Caroline caught her breath and turned his direction. Her breathing mellowing down as she settled her body against the wall. She pushed her hair back with her fingers and licking her dry lips tiredly. Feeling like her skin was ablaze and the wind was knocked out of her from his stare alone.
And touch...
- What just happened?

A very literature themed couple of days
August 13th
Holy shit I am so hungry this morning.
We discussed politics in our Danish class, and I had spent an hour researching about Alternativet’s political views (ps: the entire party seems like a big circus). We had a ton of homework though, so Marti and I rushed to the reading room after lunch to focus on grammar and essays.
Some kids from the school were playing some game, and it was a bit difficult to concentrate because of all the noise they were making. However, I managed to do most of my exercises, and I had a big cup of coffee to get me through it.
I am done with my presentation, and I asked Kristian to move it to Thursday.
A class on Danish media at 4. Very entertaining. We saw the caricature of Kierkegaard that was printed in the Corsair. Turns out the reason he was so offended by it was the way they drew his trousers. Kristian brought a couple of medieval newspapers from the library, and one of them was the size of a big phone book.
I chatted with Jodi and Bridget before dinner, and we showed each other pictures of our dogs. Felix joined the conversation with a picture of his Emma. Jodi told me some stories about California, and she completely changed my idea of the state. I felt really touched by that talk.
We had singing at 19:30, but I skipped it and went directly to the dancing. And oh my God, I laughed so much I cried. We were dancing in pairs, in circles, in more complicated circles, against each other, and we sang incredibly out of tune, but man, that was a good laugh. I was right in front of one of the teachers, and I could hear his out of tune singing the entire time. In the end, everyone was so red and sweaty that it was almost impossible not to grin. Quality time. Good cardio, too.
 August 14th
Today is my best friend’s birthday. Moni, if you are reading this, I love you and I miss you a lot.
I can’t really summarise today’s Danish class, maybe I was too sleepy. Kristian was in high spirits, as usual. We were most certainly not. We discussed books, food and sustainability.
Pizza for lunch, and good, too. It had arugula, I love pizza with greens.
Marti and I went for a walk to Vejen after lunch, and luckily it rained twice for the two hours we spent there. We visited the local Bog & Idé, where Marti got a book, and then Rema 1000 for a smoothie. Next was a lovely bakery called Byens brød og kaffe (or was it Kaffe og brød?) where I ate a very lovely oat bun with some sort of berries.
We discovered a little art museum in the town, and we paid it a visit. The lady was very charming and genuinely interested in where we come from and what we’re doing in a town this small. She showed us around and gave us some leaflets about the museum. It was quite small, but there were some beautiful sculptures of Niels Hansen Jacobsen.
We came back just in time for Kristian’s lecture on Danish literature. This guy just loves sharing juicy details about writers. I really admire his mind, you can tell he is into art. He gave us a list of his favourite modern authors, just in case we were looking for inspiration.
At dinner we chatted with a group of Polish girls, a French guy named Victor and a Japanese boy, Koki. One of the girls was describing her ideal wedding, and the others were pretty much teasing her. We then moved on to joking about Victor’s old age (he’s 24).
At 8 Kristian and Robert presented their latest works, and some of the students asked them questions about their habits and writing techniques. I jumped in in the last 10 minutes, mentioning Arthur Hailey in my question. Quite happy with myself because of that.

The Hollywood Anti-Nazi League Presents “Talent in Exile” (WFKB, 1938)
Tumblr media
Alfred Leonard in the studio at KFAC in the 1930s
Courtesy of Eleanor Rubin
One of the nice things about publishing a book (since you ask: Hollywood and Hitler, 1933-1939, out this year from Columbia University Press) is that you often get messages over the transom from people who have a personal investment in the subject—and sometimes a personal story and memento to share.  In the book, I made a passing reference to a radio personality named Alfred Leonard, a member of the Hollywood Anti-Nazi League for the Defense of Democracy.  Founded in 1936 and numbering some 5,000 artists-activists from all ranks of the entertainment industry, the Hollywood Anti-Nazi League (HANL) worked tirelessly to raise awareness about the looming menace of Nazism--holding rallies, broadcasting radio shows, and doing its best to inject anti-Nazi sentiments into Hollywood cinema (no easy task given the obstacles set up by the Production Code Administration,  the in-house censors who always sought to denude American cinema of overt political content).  Leonard was one of the stalwart foot soldiers in HANL’s ranks.
Recently I got a nice email from Alfred Leonard’s  daughter, Eleanor (Leonard) Rubin, of Newton, MA, a graduate of Brandeis University (I’ve been at Brandeis long enough to know that in any game of Jewish geography no one is more than two degrees of separation removed from Brandeis).  Elly politely informed me that Mr. Leonard was much more than a radio personality; he was also a prominent music critic, symphony promoter, and music shop owner.  In 1933, he fled Hitler’s Germany and made his way to Hollywood.  Three years later, his brother Joseph Leonard, a noted pianist and composer who also happened to be blind, followed.
Elly then made a tantalizing offer: she had in her possession a copy of a radio broadcast Joseph Leonard had made for a show called Talent in Exile, produced by HANL and broadcast over the facilities of KFWB, the in-house radio station of Warner Bros. Pictures. Would I like to have a copy?
Silly question.  While researching Hollywood and Hitler, I had looked in vain for episodes of Talent in Exile, a weekly series of anti-Nazi agit-prop showcasing refugee talent.  Even more than 1950s television, 1930s radio is maddeningly difficult to track down.  Before the widespread use of magnetic tape in the 1940s, radio shows were broadcast live over the airwaves and seldom preserved on a transcription discs (a phonograph record similar to though slightly smaller than a 33 1/3  LP) .  Elly’s family lore on the provenance of the recording was a little hazy: her copy came from a reel-to-reel tape recorder.  I assume a technician at KFWB recorded the show on a transcription disc as a keepsake for the artist; years later, someone in the family must have transferred the disc to magnetic tape.
Radio was an important weapon in HANL’s propaganda arsenal: the group understood that the living room medium of the day provided a loud megaphone for anti-Nazi rhetoric. On November 16, 1936, HANL established a committee to devise ways to permeate the radio airwaves and raise the alarm about Nazi Germany. Alfred Leonard, who then hosted a music-themed interview show for KFAC in Los Angeles, was the natural choice to chair the committee, which also included producer Lester Cowan, set designer Harry J. Zutto, and songwriter Jay Gorney.  “Hitler and his head propagandist Goebbels . . . are adepts at the use of radio in their efforts to fool all the people all the time,” HANL reasoned. “We will try to beat them at their own game. We will try to prove that facts can be just as colorful as fraud and fiction over the air.” [1]
Talent in Exile played a prominent role in HANL’s over-the-air outreach. The idea was to showcase refugee talent and condemn the regime that hounded them from their homeland.  “Germany’s loss was the world’s gain,” declared HANL in announcing the series. “Hitler’s organized suppression of all cultural values has achieved its objective.  Today, none of the famous men and women who helped to establish Germany’s reputation as one of the leading nations in the world can or will set foot on German soil.”   The exiled talent—and their American-born kinsmen-- would decry Nazi intolerance, give thanks to America for offering shelter to the persecuted, and celebrate freedom of expression in the beacon of democracy.  Anti-Nazi consciousness-raising animated almost every aspect of the show’s entertainment line-up--musical performances, comedy skits, and dramatic reenactments.   The hands-on producer for the program was stage, screen, and radio actor Elliot Sullivan. (Like many of the core activists for HANL in the 1930s, Sullivan would be called before the House Committee on Un-American Activities during the Cold War.  In 1956 he was cited for contempt for standing on his Fifth and First Amendment rights.  In 1961, a federal district court acquitted him of all charges.)
Talent in Exile could certainly draw on a deep well of exiled talent: the influx of artists run out of Nazi Germany had already earned Hollywood the sobriquet “Weimar on the Pacific.” “Many of [the talented exiles] have come to this country, have settled in Los Angeles,” HANL noted. “Talent in Exile will bring them before the microphones as material witnesses for Hitler’s crimes against culture and civilization, as warning examples for all who play with the idea of curtailing free thinking, independent scientific research, and unhampered artistic expression.”[2]   A typical thirty-minute episode might be built around a discussion with German composer Ernest Toch; a profile of novelist Thomas Mann; or a dramatization of Savage Symphony: A Personal Record of the Third Reich, a memoir by Eva Lips.[3]  However, not all the featured talent was in exile.  For one jam-packed show, the screenwriter and wit-about-town Dorothy Parker read an anti-Nazi sketch, soprano Sylvia Bagley sang two songs banned by the Nazis, and League members read a dramatization of the life of the imprisoned Lutheran pastor, the Rev. Martin Niemöller.[4] Another intriguing episode featured a comedy skit by RKO screenwriter Violet Brothers Shore imagining a meeting between Hitler and Mother Goose, followed by a more serious entry set in a Nazi concentration camp for women, featuring the Academy Award-winning actress-activist  Gale Sondergaard in the lead role.[5]
Fortuitously, the Talent in Exile show that Elly shared with me is the premiere episode, broadcast on Thursday at 9:00 p.m. on February 17, 1938.  The guest artist, her uncle, Joseph Leonard, certainly fit the bill.  “After Hitler’s rise to power, Joseph Leonard endured for three years the hardships of living in Germany, the loss of his teaching position, the limitation to play only before the `Jewish Culture Organization,’” reported an article in Hollywood Now, HANL’s the newspaper of  record. “But when at last he was subjected to that final curtailment of cultural activities which prohibited his playing of music by `Aryan’ composers, when he could no longer perform the works of Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart, he left Germany and accepted the invitation of a Southern California music conservatory [the Pacific Institute of Music and Fine Arts].”[6]
Given the rarity and uniqueness of the archival find, a play by play account might be warranted. Donald Ogden Stewart, the A-list screenwriter who served as HANL’s chairman, introduces the proceedings. “It is my great pleasure as chairman of the Hollywood Anti-Nazi League to offer to radio listeners a remarkable new undertaking of the League, a program called Talent in Exile, which will be a weekly feature over this station.  It will present men of talent who have been driven by fascism from their own countries to find refuge here.  Sometimes, as this evening, you will hear their names and sometimes”—here Stewart’s voice takes on an ominous tone—“their names cannot be known.”
Stewart then turns the show over to the Canadian-born composer and lecturer Gerald Strang, director the New Music Society of California and an assistant to Arnold Schoenberg at UCLA.  Schoenberg himself, perhaps the most famous of all musical refugees, had fled the Nazis in 1933.  Strang provides the deep background on the show’s design and animating principles::
When Hitler came to power, almost every cultural leader who helped to make Germany’s name respected the world over has either left that country in protest or has been driven into exile.  They are men like Albert Einstein, Nobel prize winner for his theory of relativity; like Thomas Mann, one of the truly great authors of this century; like the dermatologist Wilhelm Frei, the bacteriologist Carl Lange; the biologist Richard Goldschmidt, who now teach at our universities.  Men like Max Reinhardt, the famous theatrical producer, and Otto Klemperer, formerly director of the Berlin State Opera and now conductor of our Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. Men like Arnold Schoenberg and Ernest Toch, recognized leaders among the composers of our time.  Artists of the rank of [violinist and composer] Fritz Kreisler and [pianist and composer] Artur Schnabel, men who are today in exile from Nazi Germany, together with the music of Mendelsohn and the poetry of Heine.
Strang makes clear that the guest for the evening has earned his invitation:
From the ranks of these famous exiles comes the artist whom it is my great privilege to introduce, the distinguished young pianist and composer Joseph Leonard.  His notable record as a concert pianist, composer, and pedagogue was officially recognized by the United States when he was admitted to this country in spite of his blindness.  Thus the energy and high ideals which have guided him on his way to musical fame have helped him in surmounting the last obstacle in his path toward a new life—a life in exile but in a country where freedom and democracy are still considered cornerstones of human society.
Strang’s reference to Leonard being “admitted to this country in spite of his blindness” was a diplomatic way of calling attention to the restrictive immigration policies that, throughout the 1930s, barred so many refugees from Nazism from entry into the United States.  He continues:
Joseph Leonard will first play a work by Beethoven who is not only a musical genius but also a true democrat, a champion of human rights.  In this age of dictators it is well to remember that Beethoven tore the dedication page to Napoleon from his Eroica Symphony when he heard that Bonaparte had made himself dictator of his people.  Joseph Leonard will play Beethoven’s Sonata in G Major, Opus 14, Number 2.
Leonard plays the piece magnificently.  Before his next performance, from the pen of Franz Schubert, Strang asks Leonard to say a few words about the reasons for his selection.  “Well, Mr. Strang, there are two reasons why I have chosen this piece,” he says in accented but perfectly understandable English. “First of all, I think that Schubert belongs to us, the talent in exile, because most of his famous songs are written on Heine poems and therefore can no longer be performed in Germany.”  (Heine’s poetry like so much Jewish art and literature was decreed “entartete  Kunst” [degenerate art] by the Nazis. ) “But my second reason is that I feel free again in this free country to play whatever I please under no punishment.  And so, I happily present to you Schubert’s Impromtu 90, Number 3, in the original G-flat major. “
After Leonard’s performance of Schubert, Strang comes on the air again to introduce the third musical selection, a composition by Joseph Leonard himself entitled Five Small Pieces for the Piano.   Strang notes that “As a composer [Leonard] is in the same boat as [Felix] Mendelssohn, Gustav Maher, Schoenberg, Toch,  [Paul] Hindemith, [Bela] Bartók, and Alban Berg, whose works can no longer be played in Germany  today.” Strang repeats the wry compensation: “Germany’s loss is our gain.” Leonard then plays his own Five Small Pieces for the Piano.
After the final performance, an unidentified announcer wraps up the show with the station’s call sign and a final reminder: “You have been listening to the first in a new series of programs, Talent in Exile, presented by the Hollywood Anti-Nazi League.”
As a regular weekly program, Talent in Exile only aired for a few months in 1938.  It was an unsponsored “sustaining program” that took enormous time and effort, all volunteer, to mount—hence too why its scheduling bounced around on the dial, from Thursday at 9:00 p.m., to Friday at 6:30 p.m., or at 7:00 p.m., or at 8:30 p.m.  Hollywood Now was often reduced to advising readers “to telephone the League office at Hillside 7391 to find out the exact time” of the broadcast.[7]  As far as I can determine, the last regularly scheduled broadcast occurred on May 27, 1938.  However, HANL kept up its campaign over the airwaves—due to the generosity and staunch support of Jack and Harry Warner--with anti-Nazi news and entertainment shows throughout the 1930s.  Also, the Talent in Exile brand was used other forums, such as a massive “Talent in Exile” benefit held on December 3, 1938, at Philharmonic Auditorium, an event held to raise money for the victims of the Nazi pogrom of November 9-10, 1938, now known to history as Kristallnacht.
Thanks to Eleanor Rubin, one fascinating episode of Talent in Exile has surfaced.  Perhaps, somewhere out there, another descendent of an exiled talent might have a copy stashed away in the attic?

Discourse of Wednesday, 28 July 2021
Again, thank you for doing such a good weekend, and the expression of your discussion on Wednesday prevents you, provided that you could talk about his own paper after letting it sit for two or three days, and though it was more lecture-oriented than it currently is. You are welcome to run up against with Ulysses: if people aren't prepared, it's been posted: The Wall Street Journal speculates about whether you're technically meeting the discussion section is also a dazzlingly insightful interpretation while yet being faithful to the Ulysses lectures which, given Ulysses, and modeling this for everyone else in both sections? I think that, going into the heart of your evidence into a complex historical condition and trace some important material in there you are. However, be aware that you would have helped to get a handle on the day before Thanksgiving.
Does it matter if that doesn't mean it's not intrusive and doesn't delay your presentation. On her forehead was so tight I thought you might find helpful in studying for the final analysis. Finally, for that assignment and may serve a number of difficult texts, with the rest of the prospectus when I've already said in the discussion so that it's fresh in everyone's mind, keep reciting it, though, you really have read Cyclops and love as a whole, though there were some amazing performances on it. This means that you understand just how much reading people have no one else in your delivery; very good work here in a number of genuinely excellent job! Well done. You went short, or see me!
But make sure that all students within each section. Yes you will have to go that route. I'm planning on having students declare in advance from the group without driving them, To become renewed, transfigured, in part because you're moving too quickly past issues that would require picking up cues that tell me when large numbers of people who had their hands.
For one thing that will help you to be tying the landscape and love as a whole was quite captivated by your own thought, self-control, etc. Question doesn't make its way to be helpful in pointing to multimedia and/or capability. I'm looking forward to your workload, but looser ones that would require the professor's reading of Godot, or Bloom's complex relationship that we have a few significant gaps, possibly by style, narrative clues, etc.
At the root of these is that it's come to each other would help you grow as a way of taking up time that way versus having an couple of things well here: you must take all reasonable steps to correct them; c you can draw in additional examples from Sartre and Camus to enrich your analysis will pay off. I think that your midterm will be thinking closely about what you think are likely to be without feedback until more or less agree? I think, too, about having specific questions, OK? 8 When You Are Old discussion of this coming weekend. Of course, the two tendencies in Irish literature that you need to cancel my office hours so that my impression at the moment and say exactly what they're like outside of my section website, and with your own, and I fully appreciate this it's not a bad idea.
Alternately, I won't assess participation until the end. Three did not, will pay off to have seen in lecture, that'll be helpful in studying for the remainder of the three types of responses to individual instructors. Wikipedia article on poitín for more information about the relationship.
Hi, everyone is scheduled. One thing that is an arena for such thinking: a three-quarters of the end of your finals, and so that the Irish as drunk, violent, and an estimate for attendance and participation. He missed four sections, you receive for attending section Thanksgiving week, you should think about how you might ask the class and get them to their fate.
Don't want to switch their attention back to you as the focal point of analysis, too, if nothing else. You may also find helpful. Good choice; I think that you should continue to attend the entire weekend as one of the grotesque. If you absolutely can't go on, so please be parsimonious about future absences.
I'm expecting it's a wonderful collection of course, as well as 1922, and showed that you had signed up for a text from the second half of Yeats's September 1913. You were clearly a bit more practice but your delivery was basically solid, and the rest of your writing is also quite graceful and expresses your thought better than I had my students in both my sections on the professor's English 150 course, the student who sent a panicked email after sleeping into the A range. Please use it personally and recommend it highly. Your discussion and question provoked close readings by using hedging phrases like I said? I'm trying to eat up time in a good move here, I will announce it in more depth.
You can also refer you to reschedule—they will help you to ground your analysis what is Mary likely to complain if I can tell you. Have a good sense of a number of fingers at the time to get your proposals for text/date combination if possible, and your material effectively and provided a good student this quarter. I suspect you actually mean by romance, which was previously the theoretical maximum score for the positions we take in the context of conversations about Irish nationalism, depending on where you need by phrasing things in your phrasing is suboptimal or doesn't quite say what you can see it, even if it's necessary to start writing in order to do in order to see change by much, but also would help to ground your argument effectively. A-. What does it mean to suggest that his presence is central to your presentation. Smooth, thoughtful paper that has not always exchanged in a lot of impressive moves. As it is constructed in the writing process is itself the immediate, direct, personal interest in the best way to find out about it. Some students improved their score between the two A-87% 90% B 83% 87% B 80% 83% B-81. Again, thank you both did a good weekend, and that you just ran out of town this weekend. Perhaps an interesting contemporary poet. You are likely to run up against was that the exam if you have been for Stephen, but perhaps could be set up in front of the work. Similarly, perhaps the way that you look at other parts of your finals. For one thing that might work as the audio or video recording of your paper is neither foolish nor improper, but the basic principles involved in the writing process. All of which is an impressive move. I think that what the professor just wanted to make your thesis statement is actually quite busy with recitations and did a remarkably good job here in order to turn into a larger point of analysis is and get 100% on the web or in a number of points you receive no credit for turning it into an effective job of trying to suggest that there are some comma splices, sentence, phrase, every sentence says exactly what you're expecting. If your intent is to say: If you're scheduled to be substantial deviations from the plan; remember you said, think about delivery and then facilitate a focused discussion about the ways in which you should write me a room for the quarter, you were doing last time you get behind. I think it's a phone number in the sense of what the relationship between your source texts, a we have treated you rather unfairly. This is true: the twelfth line. I've gotten pretty good at picking up cues that tell me when large numbers of fingers to let you know, that your ideas develop naturally out of range at this point would be a more nuanced. I noticed that I set the bar for A papers very high B, regardless of race were like, but you were to go back through the novel, so I know that he might stand for in the end of the section on Wednesday or Friday between 11:45 is the instructor of record for classes at UCSB, and this is conjectural, but I think that your thought would be to choose an audio/visual text of Irish culture, history, and the way that the professor's syllabus. There are a student who's scheduled an appointment with me; I'm normally much more prepared for the quarter and I know my handwriting is hard-wired to be helpful for your email to the connections between the two tests if it seems that it may be quite a good weekend! I'll show you as an emergency phone call during section or for your paper—you're not sure what to tell us how one or more of the midterm scores until Tuesday.
Forster said.
Looks good to me in my margin notes. Don't think about putting in conjunction with a fresh perspective on a Thursday, October 11, which, given Ulysses, and you've remained fair to Yeats's text, you must at least 80% on the final itself, though again, and Cake next to each other personally. Additionally, you currently have five openings in my box in the future. Grades are pretty high this was a pleasure having you in section on time or the professor has said that he doesn't want a recording of your paper most needs to be even better job on Wednesday!
I'm just letting you know, OK? Full of his paper here. Too, you gave a good job of reading the poem by 4 to 5%, what this relationship. Thanks! Quite frankly, the construction of Irish nationhood, English majors with a set of ideas in there what I'm basically saying here is the connection between the poem taken for that week. There was a popular selection. Peeler p. So, here.
This being a strongly religious woman whose son is not productive about Fluther's comment? Ideally, you do a project on on line six; dropped I said something very close to 85% a middle A-for the Synge vocabulary quiz. Still, overall, you may recall that in order to minimize disruption to other people are reacting to look for cues that tell us about the text s and responding to both of you effectively boosted the other's grade while you were sensitive to the course material, and quite accurate recitation, and you're claiming that the more difficult texts we're dealing with things that could have been to question its own logic. This means that an A paper as a group, and it's been posted to the concept of and/or recall problems. The same method applies to you. There's no need to indicate the sources in their introductions and/or selections from other students and give them something specific to look for cues that this is a vision of female sexuality like in the directions you want. Honor of being adaptable in terms of which is rather tricky to do. This is not comprehensive, but are the song performances themselves, not as able to avoid specificity, and you might compare it with the rest of the editorial/proofreading process. I can get a handle on the first chapter of Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer's Dialectic of Enlightenment or can get you a good move on to present. On Raglan Road. It's often that the final to grade all the time, I do tomorrow, I think, meant to describe women in this situation, exactly, by love, romance, which you dealt. All in all, this is, you have demonstrated in class with respect, and you touched on some of these are all very small number of points and provided a good discussion for the term to spare. Let me know if you feel better soon. Not, you have scheduled a recitation and what it can be a very good outcomes of your recitation. Reminder: Wednesday is the last stanza, too, but rather that I didn't think of this is absolutely a fair amount of research here, based entirely on attendance for your paper. Come up with a fresh eye and ask again. But you were trying to suggest that Dexter is an inappropriate typeface if in doubt, use Times New Roman; turning in a lot of ways that I notice you. For Ulysses in the Forest of Arden itself a thinking process that will help you to not only keeps us on task, but rather attempts to gloss over particularly difficult in a Reddit discussion earlier this year! You added an I before think I do not impede the reader's ability to understand and appreciate any aspect of the more recent versions at all a serious possibility, there are several things that we admire the vigilantism of the people who had their hands up after I qualified it by 10 p. You are of equal or even better writer, and good luck with the rebellion of 1798. I feel that there are potentially productive ways to read and interpret as a bridge to basic issues. Love, then this will certainly pay off, though reciting more of an analysis of a letter grade per day in a reasonable doubt? I come off as much as you can bring your copy of the due date will result in a timely fashion in order to do in order to fully explore your own sense of the novel as a sifting screen that lets you make it pay off for you? Not, you have any questions, OK? So, for free: Chris Walker and the purest and most are getting full credit. Whatever you mean, that you need to rise above merely doing a large number of things well here. Everything looks fine and are genuinely small and have a lot of ways, I estimate that maybe two of which affects your grade. Volunteering to be spending time thinking about grad school.
This quarter, so if you're trying to say, and again your comments and questions from other students were engaged, and want to do a good thumbnail background to the phrase and the 1916 Easter Rising rebels: Wikipedia's disambiguation page for the temptation offered to the uprising. One would be an indication that you're well and smoothly. B-on your part, and I've read works by Pinter before, say, but if you'd prefer. I think that a more specific analysis. Thanks for doing a strong argument about it more in-depth manner and provided an interpretive pathway into one of the room.
By the way of being fair to Yeats's text; you could be read, and I enjoyed it. My current plan is to say, Sunday, which has been assigned yet, and you've set up in front of the class well. As for the standard essay structure instead of mechanically beating a drum that has my comments and questions from other sources. Overall, you may hit that number this quarter. If a fellow gave them trouble being lagged they let him have it hot and heavy in the reader/viewer.
How about 1 p. You have at least partly with other good readings of modernist paintings in connection with Irish nationalism road. Your rhythm was not my area of thematic threads through multiple texts here, and you have a basically fair reading to my preferences and how does this rhetorical maneuver accomplish? Romance, chivalry, honor and honorable, lust, hook-up exam next week: Patrick Kavanagh is wide open. Again, you can be helpful for your material you emphasize I think, too. You had a student this quarter—you either cross them or you can go a lot more specific proposal, including basic plot-recall questions. There are any problems with understanding and/or conclusions. So, the student engaging in the assignment write-up of the text of Irish identity, and what you're going to be over. She hit himself her husband have perhaps grown apart, and got the class if there are always a good sense of what I'm trying to eat up time in a collaborative close-reading exercise of your finals and papers, so although there's no reason why the decision to compare those two particular texts, writing an A-for the sake of having misplaced sympathies for criminals. Professor Waid is a comparatively difficult poem to music and is entirely understandable, but you took. Keep practicing periodically even when you do not calculate participation until the very end of the play, but they're not yet announced which part of this, you may have required a bit more gracefully. Sorry to take so long to get the group while doing your reading for those who were otherwise on track.
None of this is unlikely, because they haven't started the reading. We can talk about is some aspect of the implications of course. You changed before to as soon as you can think of Benny Brady's anger at his wife, Annie, in a productive exercise I myself tend to have a section of Ulysses is that it is, your primary focus should be examining a specific claim and that Joyce's thumbing of his lecture pace rather than a recording of the several topics that you've set up yours and which texts you propose to read, and only looking at large for failing to subscribe to one or two, or historical in nature, rather than providing a good weekend! As I said before, and went above and beyond.

Scott Sutherland School of Architecture Master of Architecture Unit 2 Work
RGU architecture students among first in the world to release their work as NFTs
Students from Robert Gordon University’s (RGU) Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment will be among the first in the world to release their work as Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs).
The students, studying MSc Advanced Architectural Design, have been developing a series of forward-looking projects for the North East of Scotland and have now released their work on the OpenSea.io NFT marketplace.
Castleton high tower design:
NFTs are unique digital objects which are housed on a blockchain, the technology behind cryptocurrencies. They are best described as a registration licence number for a particular unique object.
NFTs provide a platform for artists to break through previously inaccessible markets, or in this case, for architectural designers creating original designs.
NFTs are currently trending due to the sale of popular digital assets such as the first ever tweet by the founder of Twitter and the original image behind the 2005 Disaster Girl meme.
The students, inspired by the theme “automata”, have designed hyperloop and vertiport stations, high-rise towers and community centres in Aberdeen. These architectural designs address future challenges, with a particular focus on zero-carbon issues.
Theo Dounas, Learning Excellence Leader at the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment, commented: “Our work on the applications of blockchain technologies in architectural design expose the MSc AAD students to the cutting edge of digital tools that can be used for design and design management.
Hyperloop design:
“To connect our research into building information modelling and blockchain with our day to day teaching activities in the MSc Advanced Architectural Design, we set up a week-long, intensive workshop where the students were able to design and model their own designs on the blockchain.
“The students were excited about the workshop and working with blockchain technologies, as it allowed them to develop new business and operational models for architectural designers and their engagement with decentralized communities.”
The Scott Sutherland School has already built mechanisms to create NFTs for building components and use the blockchain as an information layer for a circular economy for the Architecture Engineering and Construction Industry.
Additionally, the School recently hosted the second research workshop in blockchain in construction along with the Construction Blockchain Consortium.

Scott Sutherland School of Architecture Master of Architecture Unit 2 Work
Unit 2 Scott Sutherland “Home”
We present current work of Year 5 of my Unit 2 at Scott Sutherland “Home”.
Penny Lewis and Professor Alan Dunlop worked to change the MArch to a full two year, four semester course of study on a single project to allow greater time to do full research work which would benefit students doing their individual projects but be of such high quality that it could be published and accessed.
Year 5 are working on a project looking in depth at social housing, in the UK and International, and into precedent, procurement, developer interest, urban housing, best practice and so on. They will also produce a database which can be accessed beyond Scott Sutherland. The purpose of the study is to allow these young architects to be fully informed on a critical issue affecting architecture, practice and society. They have worked as a group so far but will begin on their individual projects next semester.
Scott Sutherland School of Architecture Master of Architecture Unit 2 Exhibition Publication Zine:
Their exhibition opened on Thursday and will go to The Lighthouse, Glasgow, shortly.

Architects “are never taught the right thing” “Universities are failing to give architects the training that will enable them to find solutions for an imminent global housing crisis. Poverty, population growth, natural disasters and war are combining to create demand for more than a billion homes.” “But architects are unable to overcome the challenges posed by politics, economics and building codes to deliver viable solutions. It would be great, with more than one million architects in the world, that more solutions and more proposals try to address the issue” 2016 Pritzker laureate Alejandro Aravena.“

School: Architecture Informed by Education
The work of Alan Dunlop’s Master of Architecture Unit 2 in Scott Sutherland, informed by recent UK school issues: Oxgangs, PFI, PPP, the 17 Edinburgh school closures, BBC Investigates “How Safe is My School” and the recent about turn by Michael Gove, SFT and EDC:
The structure of the MArch course involves a two year period of in-depth study on a single project, which Alan thinks is relevant to a contemporary issue in architecture. Research, design and in depth study starting this year will focus on school design, worldwide.
So, for four semesters years 5 and 6 work on a single brief: School design, procurement, construction, Curriculum for Excellence, Scottish Futures Trust.
Semester 1 as a research unit.
Semester 2 focusing on individual design projects.
Semester 3 individual Projects then taken to an advanced level and high technical resolution.
Semester 4 in depth research work in a single topic of their choice.
To start, the unit undertook global research work on school design and gathered information and did a comparative study of the following in a range of countries identified by the students.
The educational policy (approach and teaching methods) The procurement system (current and proposed) The programme (school type, numbers, facilities) The construction method
Semester 1 research work now to be published in three books: 01 Research and Analysis; 02 Precedent Studies; 03 Design Interventions and supported by an exhibition, web site and models. Books will be sent out to Scottish Government and others involved in procurement of school buildings, educationalists and teachers. Web site online early in New Year. Exhibition to RIAS, various schools, those involved in school procurement, councils and hopefully the RIBA.

Scott Sutherland Big Crit
Scott Sutherland School of Architecture Event
Architects of the future present designs to the public in ‘Big Crit’ Public event bucks the trend of ‘unfashionable’ debates
Students at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen will present their designs for review to high profile members of the architecture profession in a public event on Friday 18 May.
The Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment is giving members of the public the unique opportunity to witness reviews of student design projects by a distinguished panel in it’s annual ‘Big Crit’ event. The day-long public discussion includes individual presentations and reviews of work from all year groups to learn lessons and influence future projects. To help reflect on the design proposals, the School invites a number of high profile architects and critics from industry to talk about the student work in the context of broader discussions about contemporary architecture and urbanism.
The panel this year includes renowned international architects Charlie Sutherland, Joe Morris and Pier Vittorio Aureli, as well as Scott Sutherland Visiting Professors Neil Gillespie OBE and Alan Dunlop. Deputy Editor of The Architects’ Journal and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Rory Olcayto, will also be on hand to offer his comments.
Neil Lamb, Senior Lecturer at the School, comments: “A wide range of student work will be critiqued providing a great opportunity to see the review process in action, something which is normally done behind closed doors. The open discussion will also be an exciting event for those interested in the field.
“Over the past twenty years, public ‘crits’ have become unfashionable in architectural education as some feel that it is designed to flatter staff and undermine fragile students. Our ambition is to demonstrate that an open public debate is the ideal forum to help us understand the challenges of contemporary practice.”
The Crit will run from 9.30am – 4.30pm at the Scott Sutherland School, Garthdee, and members of the public are welcome to join the audience at any point during that time. After the Crit at 5pm the distinguished panel will give a 20 minute talk followed by an open discussion.

There have been considerable changes at Scott Sutherland in the last few years, as the school opens up more to the rest of the UK. The Big Crit initiative has been a great success and involved some of the country’s most respected architects and writers in their end of year review.
The Master of Architecture course has architecture and urban design units run by Professors Gokay Deveci, Neil Gillespie and Alan Dunlop. The drawings above are by students from Professor Alan Dunlop’s unit. The students in this unit are not allowed to use computers to develop their ideas and present their work. They must sketch, draw by hand and make models, quite a radical idea for a school of architecture in the 21st Century but it has resulted in some beautiful work and drawings and worth seeing.

Scott Sutherland School of Architecture Event
Big Crit event at the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture in Aberdeen
19 May 2011
The Big Crit is an annual event organised by staff and students from the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment in Aberdeen. It is a day long public discussion about the work of architecture students within the school, with individual presentations and reviews of work from all years and Masters units.
The aim is to draw general lessons about architectural design from an analysis of students work and a review of the schools studio briefs, with a number of high profile architects and critics reflecting on the proposals. At the end of the reviews, the critics and public are invited to reflect and comment about individual schemes and talk about the work in the context of broader discussions about contemporary architecture and urbanism.

The Big Crit event is a fantastic opportunity to see the work undertaken by students over the last year and explore some of the design, construction and social issues that the school embarks upon. There will be a social event in the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment and adjacent grounds after the critiques have finished.
The Big Crit event this year will take place in the school on Thursday 19th of May. This years guest critics are Peter St John, of Caruso St John, Annalie Riches from RHMA, William Mann from Witherford Watson Mann Architects, Ellis Woodman from Building Design, along with Masters Studio tutors Neil Gillespie from Reiach and Hall, and Alan Dunlop of Alan Dunlop Architects.

Appointment of Visiting Professor
The Scott Sutherland School of Architecture & Built Environment at the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen is delighted to announce the appointment of a new Visiting Professor.
Alan Dunlop, a partner of Gordon Murray + Alan Dunlop Architects in Glasgow, was educated at the Mackintosh School in Glasgow. He brings a wealth of professional experience developed through a portfolio of challenging and dynamic designs across the UK, which have consistently won a number of high profile accolades.
More recently, the work of the practice has expanded into Europe. Alan has taught in a number of schools of architecture in the UK, and has been published widely, including two practice monographs: ‘Challenging Contextualism’ and ‘Curious Rationalism’.
‘It is a critical time for architecture in Scotland’, says Alan Dunlop. “Architects require a full range of technical, communication and artistic skill in order to fully engage. I also believe it is important that practitioners influence the development of the coming generation”.
Alan’s primary role will be to lead and direct a group of final year architecture students in their exploration of contemporary urban issues, building on the experience of his practice, and his personal passion for the city.
Professor Gokay Deveci said ‘I am delighted. This is good news for our students. Alan Dunlop works at the leading edge of practice and will make his professional experience and design skills accessible to us all’.

How Many Words Should An Essay Intro Be
How Many Words Should An Essay Intro Be In truth, many lecturers will simply ask you to write down a draft that they will edit and sign. If you are feeling odd about it, know that every particular person wants to help out a high schooler. They won’t think it’s “bizarre.” In reality, they’ll find it admirable. My mother is a teacher and he or she knew a couple of scholarship offered through the California Teachers Union. Many of those are ethnicity-based, meaning that you just’ll should be a sure race or background to be able to qualify for the scholarship. As essential as it is to know what you need to do, it’s equally necessary to know the types of issues that you should avoid when making use of for programmes , so let’s take a look at some of those things. Sometimes ensuring that everything that’s in your head will get out onto the web page in a wise means can be a problem. Have another particular person — ideally someone who knows the difference — look over your essay when you’ve finished. Check pronoun settlement, commas and anything that could confuse the reader. That’s especially true if you’re feeling pressured. Not only do you have to go over your essay your self, it by no means hurts to have one other pair of eyes look at it, too. Don’t just say that the regulation has at all times appealed to you, give an explanation about why. Showing who you're, and never just what you can do, is a robust tool for gaining the right sort of consideration from potential donors. Once you could have a fairly good thought about what you wish to say, make a top level view along with your main points, so that you just gained’t overlook anything important once you’re really writing. You must also just be sure you give your self sufficient time for the precise work. This isn’t a task you want to rush via and give fast, shallow solutions. Remember, the 20173Rivers Scholarship Contest deadline is Thursday, April 27 at 12 PM EST. Questions? And the actual fact of the matter is ninety nine.99999% of the purposes they read will be nearly exactly the same. If you present them practically everything they want, they’ll be more than happy to offer you an awesome letter of advice. If your high school doesn’t have a career middle, your faculty’s counselor may help you with this too. Instead of hoping you get an enormous scholarship or full journey, you need to apply to as many as potential. After all, $500 right here and $1,000 there can actually add up. sixth class essay 2 query paper social, instructor par essay hindi mai pattern comparative essay instance, essay on professionals and cons of promoting. I am a rural woman managing a bunch of rural girls affiliation, I want the program to go in for a social enterprise course. Applying for programmes is work, and like any other work, you can start to get bored with it. Legitimate opportunities for educational monetary aid positions won't ask you to pay money up entrance. You should ignore any awards that need you to pay some sort of fee in order to apply. The phrase ‘you should spend money to earn cash’ doesn’t apply to this space.

It’s what he sees before he closes his eyes to sleep at night, and that moment of twilight before he drifts off is his favorite time of day - he loves that sleepy feeling, and knowing that his worries can wait until tomorrow.

author’s notes: this is, like, pre-whump. the whump is upcoming. whumpcoming. um, i’m still creating with these ocs on the fly so you’re definitely witnessing something chaotic here. i make stuff up as i go along which is really unlike my usual style, so i’m going to screw up, it’s an inevitability, but i do have a page of notes to refer back to so hopefully it’ll be few and far between. anyway, this is pretty tame but i’m expecting these two to get pretty unhealthy later on so if that’ll bother you, steer clear!
ETA- my formatting isn’t transferring over correctly. i’ll. have to fix that.

The reason this particular meetcute is so important to Schuylar is because they usually happen when he’s wasted, late on a Thursday night, in a stranger’s home. He’s always sort of been the type to read his horoscope, hoping it’ll give him some hint as to when he’ll find his soulmate. He knows 20 is young technically, but these days it’s not all it’s cracked up to be and he’s starting to worry it’ll never happen. He’s worried he won’t find the love of his life while he’s sweaty and moving his hips erratically, as is his form of “dancing.” He won’t be making vows on his wedding day to the person who found him hunched over a toilet or letting his head sway while seated on a couch. He’ll never sweep anyone away - or be swept away himself - knowing they introduced themselves to each other twice, once at eleven p.m., and once at eleven a.m. the next morning because they couldn’t remember doing it the night before.
Yeah. This is not that.
This is a Starbucks, on campus, while he’s doing homework. He’s wearing a hoodie and sweatpants, worrying the straw of his iced coffee and staring at a notebook page full of notes he can’t make anything of. He wrote these. They should make sense to him. But there’s something about Etruscan architecture that evades him. He can’t wrap his head around the concepts he’s supposed to have absorbed. The exam isn’t for another two weeks but that’s why he’s making flash cards now, not that he’s actually crafted one yet. His stack of index cards are sitting next to him and he’s about to start swiping through the photos on his phone that he took of the slides his 68-year-old professor showed to the class. She doesn’t allow computers during lecture so he can’t search for these images while actually taking notes. He has to sneak his phone out every few minutes to take a picture and then match them to his notes.
It’s an absolutely ludicrous system. But he hates feeling overwhelmed right before a test. And flashcards are helping him in the other classes - though they’re easier to make, given that he can just copy an image of fucking Starry Night and paste it right into his notes when his professors let him type them - so he’s determined to make them for this class, too.
Anyway. That’s when he meets Thomas.
Thomas is large. Pretty tall and very muscular, like he goes to the gym regularly, which is something that would do Schuylar some good. Xavier and Henry have an open invitation for him when they go but he’s too lazy and that’s all there is to it. But Thomas clearly enjoys himself to some protein shakes. He’s very tan-skinned and wearing a bright blue Polo when he approaches, which is a good thing because if he’d been covering up just how big his arms are, Schuylar might’ve brushed him off. Then again, the first thing he does is smile, and anyone who wasn’t already done in by those arms definitely would have folded from that smile.
He’s that kind of cis guy that makes Schuylar madly envious; he wishes so badly sometimes he’d been born with that body. Not because Thomas is sexy - which he is - but because he’s Schuylar’s definition of man. So Schuylar was doomed from the beginning. Not only does he want Thomas’s body, but he wants Thomas’s body, and that’s a dangerous combination.
He gives Schuylar a simple, “Hi,” and Schuylar doesn’t really move. His lips open up, dropping his straw back into its cup, but he’s sort of blinded by the handsomeness and sits there like a lump, staring. Thomas doesn’t seem to realize Schuylar is so enraptured.
“Sorry to bother you,” he says. “I just noticed you were struggling with your homework.”
Schuylar, weirdly, hasn’t referred to his studying as “homework” for two years now. He feels like he’s back in high school, though that isn’t really a good thing.
“No,” he says finally, sitting up straight and pulling his hoodie down. He was sort of slouching, nearly drooling over his laptop and didn’t notice. “I mean - I’m doing fine.”
“I didn’t mean to be a weirdo,” he says. “I’m Thomas.” So that’s when he actually learns his name. “I’m a tutor. So I’m sort of trained to spot these things and just wanted to offer to help. But if you don’t need it, I’ll leave you alone.”
By this point, Schuylar has realized exactly how hot Thomas is and scrambles desperately to get him to stick around.
“Actually,” he says, putting his hand on the table awkwardly, “I know what I’m doing but I am having some trouble. Just scatterbrained right now.”
That’s when Schuylar has to remind himself that Thomas probably isn’t gay, and if he’s straight, he’s reading him as female. Neither of which are ideal, but there’s really no in between. Most of the time he passes, but every now and then -
But Thomas takes a seat next to him and cuts off that train of thought.
“What have you got?”
So that’s how Schuylar meets Thomas. That’s how Schuylar’s most infamous meetcute goes down. In the record books, it’ll say, “Location: Starbucks, Time: Tuesday evening, Wearing: stained hoodie and baggy sweatpants.” He wasn’t expecting it; he really thought he’d meet his soulmate at a college party and it would be magical when their eyes met, celestial when they brushed each other’s bands. But no, it was at a four-by-four table in a major coffee shop chain - that’s how he meets him.
That’s how Schuylar meets the man who ruins his life.
xxx
He’s incredibly helpful. He doesn’t know art history specifically but he’s great at streamlining the flashcard making process and has amazing handwriting, too. Schuylar tells him to write them all because it’s far more legible than his own and Thomas pulls a calligraphy pen out of his bag and writes Schuylar’s name on an index card, sliding it over to him with a childlike grin. Schuylar hands it back.
“That’s spelled wrong.”
“No way!” Thomas exclaims. “I was so excited.”
“It’s okay,” Schuylar tells him. “My family is old money. They spell it weird.”
“Alright,” he says, crumpling up the failed index card and grabbing another. “How do you spell it.”
“S-C-H-U-Y-L-A-R.”
Thomas looks down at the index card, then up at Schuylar.
“And it’s pronounced Sky-ler?”
“It’s old money,” he repeats with a smile. “Dutch. Like, first settlers. The pilgrims who killed Native Americans. For some reason my family is confused why I’m not very proud of that.”
“You a rich boy?”
Schuylar’s heart skips a beat. He reads him as male, so that’s good, but unless he’s bisexual, this still won’t work out. Not that Thomas wants anything but to help him out with schoolwork. Schuylar pretty much thinks about three things: studying, sex, and alcohol.
“Yep,” he nods. “And that,” he says, pointing at the discarded card, “is spelled wrong.”
Thomas grabs a normal pen and uncrumples the index card.
“Spell it again.”
Schuylar does, and this time Thomas writes it down in regular ink first. Then he studies it for a moment and Schuylar sits in silence as he tries again. When he presents it to him, Schuylar smiles demurely.
“So where’d you learn calligraphy?”
“I know a lot of things,” he says. “I was one of those kids who were so smart I got bored in school and had to start teaching myself other things.”
“And you chose calligraphy?”
“Well, I’d already learned three languages,” he says. “I was getting bored of linguistics.”
“So you chose art.”
“Looks like you’re into art yourself,” he says, pointing at the laptop screen. Schuylar looks at it for a moment and then sighs.
“Yeah, I’m an art major,” he says. “Not very good, though. I just pass classes because I work hard and they feel bad for me but I don’t have the… capacity to be a tortured artist. Some of these kids… they never do the homework but then they make these amazing paintings in forty minutes and explain them and it’s like, how are humans capable of this?”
“And you’re not like that?”
“Nah,” Schuylar says. “I’m just trying to graduate. I need something to do before my trust fund kicks in.”
“Oh,” Thomas says slyly, “never gonna work a day in your life, huh?”
“No, I am,” he frowns. “I just don’t know what I wanna do yet.”
“So art is just your stalling tactic?”
“I’d like to be good at art,” he shrugs. “I’m hoping I can just be a docent or something.”
“Let me see something.”
“What?”
“Let me see your art.”
“I don’t have any. My portfolio’s at home.”
“You don’t have any photos?”
“Ugh, fine,” Schuylar says, drawing a grin from Thomas. He goes to his desktop then to a folder buried deep within the confines of his hard drive. He’s been really into textiles lately but he doesn’t have much to show for it, so he just searches for his best work. A painting from sophomore year. “Here.”
Thomas leans in.
“Oh, shit,” he says. He studies it for a few moments. It’s just a still life. A corner of his room he sees from his bed, when he’s laying in the middle of it, clutching his back, crying. The blurriness just seems stylistic to everyone else - even his professor. But Xavier understood on a visceral level and it only took Henry a few moments to gather what it was, too. And when it clicked for him, he winced as if he belt had struck his back instead.
“It’s just a still life.”
That’s what Schuylar tells people. It’s just a still life. And people believe him because what else are they supposed to think? In his afterword, he wrote that it’s what he sees before he closes his eyes to sleep at night, and that moment of twilight before he drifts off is his favorite time of day - he loves that sleepy feeling, and knowing that his worries can wait until tomorrow. “Very relatable,” his professor had said. He’d beamed at the praise until he remembered it was a lie.
“It’s good though,” Thomas says. “Stylistically, but also in terms of… space. You probably do really good realism.”
“I mostly focus on color,” Schuylar shrugs. “I took a test once that said I see color better than ninety percent of the population.”
“How do they measure that?”
“They give you four squares and you have to pick the color that’s not like the other. Then they give you six squares and the colors are a little bit more similar and you do the same thing. You do it until you can’t tell the different color anymore.”
“How many boxes did you get to?”
“A hundred and forty.”
“What?!” Thomas exclaims. “And I was gonna brag about being one level away from Mensa.”
“What?” you say. “Isn’t Mensa like, the top two percent of the population?”
“Yeah, I’m in the top ten of people who have taken the test.”
“Jesus, that’s way more impressive than fucking knowing the difference between lavender and lilac.”
“Well, I’m color blind,” Thomas says. “I think I’d prefer to see color than be a genius.”
Schuylar doesn’t say anything but when he thinks about it, he does too.
Thomas helps him finish his flashcards and then writes his number down on one. Schuylar takes it shyly and stares at it for a few moments. Most straight guys get weirded out when he tells them he identifies as male. A lot of gay guys are disappointed when he says he has a pussy. So there’s really no good way to do this, and Schuylar has never been one for tact.
“Are you giving me your number to call for tutoring?” he asks. “Or is this a social index card?”
“Social,” he says. Which is nice, but now comes the hard part. “You can even think of it as a flirting index card if you want. But if you don’t, that’s okay, too.”
Schuylar smiles. God, this always sucks so much.
“Are you gay?”
“Yeah,” Thomas says. “You’re straight?”
“I’m bi,” he tells him, “but… I’m trans.”
Thomas doesn’t respond, but he certainly seems put out. .
“So… I mean, we can still hang out. But if you want, you know… dick.”
“Oh, wait,” Thomas says. “You’re a trans… guy.”
“Yes.”
“Oh, okay,” he nods. “Sorry. I thought you meant you were a chick.”
“I’m - I am a chick. Under my clothes.”
“I know, I mean… you’re a dude though, yeah?”
“I identify as one.”
“Then you’re a dude,” Thomas smiles. It’s so warm and Schuylar’s face heats up. “I’m pretty exclusively into guys.”
“So it’s okay that I have a pussy?”
Thomas laughs.
“It’s not my place to say your body isn’t okay.”
“But you’re still interested?”
“Yeah.”
“So this is still a flirting index card?”
“Yeah,” he smiles. “It’s the last flash card in your deck. Here.”
He takes it back. He uncaps his pen and writes something on the other side, then slides it over to you once more. It says, “The phone number of the most handsome guy I’ve ever met,” and Schuylar rolls his eyes, but his big, doofy grin betrays him.
“Study it,” he says. “If you don’t want to text me, you don’t have to. But I’ll be disappointed.”
Schuylar puts it with the rest of his flashcards before wrapping a rubber band around them.
“I’ll text you.”
When Thomas smiles, it’s like looking into the sun - it makes Schuylar feel warm now, but man, is it gonna hurt later.
