Popular Study Methods I dont like
(By Jay)
A list of study techniques that dont work for me at all. But study methods can work amazing for one person and then just complicate studying more for another. If they work for you, awesome, i'm happy about that. These are my personal experience with them, a lot of people wont relate and thats fine, people are different. But if you relate why these common/popular methods dont work for me, know you arent the only one and that there are more options. People might tell you "this method is amazing, you should do this" and there for you is shit.
Memorazing
Avoid this. When you memorize you dont learn. You cannot conect concepts because you dont understand. One thing is memorazing formulas, which is nessesary, but memorazing everything doesnt work. Understandment is way better. Yes, we need to remember and storage the information in our memory, but memorazing is different. Knowing the theory ord by word is shit if you cannot explain it in different words, conect it wit other concepts or put in practise.
Flashcards
Yep, studyblr favourite study method. Bear with me.
For me, it is a really passive way. When i make the Q&As of the flashcards, i remember the answers. I dont think. I associate the words. And then, when the test has the questions phrased different, my mind goes blank. It seem liked i learned because i remember but i wasnt actually learning.
Now you are probably thinking "use it for vocabulary". That doesnt help me either. Maybe it helps for knowing the meaning in a reading, but writing? I cant remember the spelling. For learning to spell a word i need to write it down. Use it in a sentence. Reading it over and over doesnt do anything.
All-nighters
Oh god, there is nothing worse than an all-nighter. One all-nighter will ruin your sleep schedule for weeks and tired=learn less. Plus, too much all-nighters lead to burn out.
With better time management, all-nighters wouldnt probably exist, or at least, be reduced by a lot
Also, as someone with chronic migraines, an all-nighter'd only give me a week straight with only terrible pain and i prefer failing a subject than that (i'd had to learn the hard way that lesson. always prioritaze your health)
Pomodoro
It's a little bit hypocrital of me to put it here, as I usually reccomend it to others. But personally? It just de-motivaties and stresses me. (disclaimer: it is a good technique, thats why i recomend it even if it doesnt work for me).
I'll explain why. The only way i can do a lot of productive stuff together (or just a long assignment) is to "get in the mood" or have like a "streak". I usually have to power through the first 5-10 minutes of studying and then i get super motivated and do a lot until my brain asks for a break. When the timer rings, it breaks it and i have to repeat the rutine again. It wouldnt be so bad if it wasnt that i work 3 or 4 times faster when i motivated than when i am powering through.
Also, having the self-impose deadline of a pomodoro (i know it isnt technically a deadline, but for some unknown reason, my brain processes it as one) makes me nervous and gives me anxiety. Just knowing the timer is going to go off anytime un-focus me. It's unnesesary stress.

tbh i have a love/hate relationship with pomodoro
sometimes when i force myself to work or study and i use this technique, i only start getting hyped on the subject when i only have five minutes left. so the pomodoro ends and i'm all hyped but i have to do this short break
and when i get back to the pomodoro, i am not as focused as i was before the break
does any other adhd haver identify with it? is it ok to maybe change the pomodoro time? or do i just live with it?

Hi, I want to share another tip for writing - or getting any concentrated work done really. Especially for the times when you aren't just in a tunnel and keep hacking away on your keyboard. And also beware, this will most likely not work for everyone but if you haven't heard of it, maybe it's worth a try:
Pomodoro and lifeat.io
I'm sure many of you know the Pomodoro technique. It's basically setting yourself a timer for work intervals with scheduled breaks in between. For example: 25 minutes of concentrated working, really trying not to get sidetracked, then 5 minutes break. You can of course do other intervals like 45/15, 50/10 - whatever you prefer or what suits you and your task best that day.
Now, there are lots of Pomodoro timers out there. But my personal favourite is lifeat.io (it's a webpage or an app). Which I love because it comes with some more features. First of all, you can open it up on your second monitor if you have one, select a nice cozy workspace scene that fits your mood, set up a timer (and more if you have the premium version, but you don't need that to try out Pomodoro) and then go.
I love especially that you can pick a scene so you have something to look at while thinking without maybe getting distracted by other stuff. I use this regularly for when I work on my thesis and started using it for my creative writing as well.
Also, it happens to me quite regularly that I keep working beyond the intervals when I feel like it. Don't be pressured by the timer, it's only a tool. Just remember to take frequent breaks, drink something, stretch!

Want to write but the ADHD got you spiraling? ME TOO!
This has helped me SO MUCH that I neeeeeed to share it. So about 2/3 of the time that I want to write my brain is like haha yeah me too and then I get nothing done because I doomscroll or start reading fanfic. I will literally be writing and suddenly be on tumblr and not remember when I clicked over and 30 minutes have passed during time I genuinely wanted to be writing...
So I was looking up things to help me NOT DO THIS and came across the 'pomodoro' method which is just basically using a timer, I specifically use this app right here, which is completely free. It has literally changed my life and I can't explain it but I think it might help you too (you, reading this, with adhd, download an app like this one and give it a try!!
I have it set to give me 15 minutes of writing time and then a five minute break. It gives a little ding when I need to take a break and another one when I need to get back to work. It doesn't matter what app you use, I just like this one because its very minimalist and I can change the times to whatever I want.
I focus SO WELL on this! 15 minutes to write, five to fuck around and a reminder to get back to it. This app is the only reason I've managed to actually finish Sefikura Week this year!
Give it a try, you won't regret it!

I know my setup isn't the cutest one, because this monitor is almost the same age as me 😂, but while it works I don't want to spend money on a newer one tbh
Anyway, I wanted you to tell me Pomodoro timers that you usually use and that are cute 👀

The Pomodoro Technique ®
A super simple method to help you get your tasks done. Named after a pomodoro (tomato) kitchen timer, the essence of it involves considering in advance how many pomodoros you might need for what you want to get done, setting your timer for, normally, 25 minutes and then focusing on your task until the time’s up. Then take a 5 minute break. That’s one pomodoro. After you’ve done four pomodoros take a longer break, of about 30 minutes.
Some tips:
Protect your pomodoro from distractions — make sure that you spend the full 25 minutes on your task. If people want things let them know you’ll get back to them after your pomodoro.
Properly break in your breaks — no sneaky working.
It’s flexible, not rigid. If you need longer or shorter times, that’s OK. It’s about what helps you focus.
You only need a timer, but there are a number of simple apps that can help if you want to try it too, like this nice one with a bear: Bear Focus Timer.
HT: Ryan MacGillivray. The Pomodoro Technique ® was created and named by Francesco Cirillo.
