Okay so now that Trevor is cast, we're all going to write a thousand fics with him, right? Please? Usually I take a very aro "yeah I'll read whatever and I don't really have strong preferences" attitude towards ships but I desperately want to see people ship him with absolutely everyone else like, yesterday.
I still can't believe it. I really thought this was going to be a thing I wanted to happen for forever but it never would.

I really don't like the relationship being forced on Shayne and Courtney. It was the same thing with Shamien. This sorta stuff ruins friendships
definitely! i’ve talked about this sort of stuff before, too, and it all comes to boundaries.
but also, if you think the stuff with shourtney just started, BOY are you in for a ride. shaymien is SUPER TAME compared to shartney
we’re going to talk for a while under the cut so hold onto your butts
we’ve gotten pretty good about respecting that here on thunglor, i’d say most of us try to keep our shipping stuff to a minimum, (tagging it as such, keeping it lowkey rather than SUPER out there, or even keeping that sort of stuff in private chats, and even going so far as to code stuff in base 64). honestly, with shipping, i think tumblr fandom (specifically in the case of smosh) gets a bad rap simply because its older iterations scared off most people. twitter, instagram and even youtube comments are MUCH worse that we could ever dream to be.
shartney’s been shipped ever since the two appeared together in videos, with fans clambering for them together, and hyping up their appearances with one another in videos. i don’t know the true extent of the ship, but i do know that there’s a lot of content for the pairing out there, on a myriad of platforms.(except for, surprisingly, here, i’ve seen very little of it going through most of the tags).
people hype up relationships that aren’t even there, pushing themselves, and unfortunately, forcing others, to think that they’re real. the difference is, as the fandom has grown, we know that the ships aren’t going to happen, they’re just fun to play around with. the smosh fam has really good dynamics with one another, so it’s easy to find chemistry between them. (hell, you can find nearly every pairing on ao3 at least once, and polysmosh has literally been voted before as the only god-tier ship)
the problem begins with the people who can’t possibly see the difference between friendship and romance, and we’re lucky that that applies to a small amount of people. but it clearly still exists. take this example from the video from earlier this week (apocalypse travel vlog).
the following comment was in response to this one:
“Noah: ‘I’m texting my girlfriend.’Courtney: ‘Must be nice.’Felt that”
the fact that people would be THAT direct, (and somehow, that delusional), is a little bit, well, nuts. they’re literally openly assuming and believing something that is definitely not true. these sorts of fans of shartney have gotten it into their heads that this is okay, when it is clearly not, and really a violation of their privacy.
i’ll also say now, that’s not aimed at the respectful people who’re just trying to enjoy their ships quietly. this is for the shovers and pushers who won’t leave the objects of their affections and obsessions alone.
courtney and shayne, along with a lot of the rest of the cast, have made it clear that they literally think of each other as siblings, that has never changed. and from that last video, they seems, like, a little uncomfy with it too (i don’t know if that was just me). not to quote a meme, but to quote a meme, “i was so wrapped up in the sibling energy of courtney and shayne that i forgot that twitter existed”.
i consider us preeeetty lucky to have arrived in a fandom that is, for the most part, pretty wholesome. lots of us have spoke about the toxic behaviour of certain parties about shipping, and how it can definitely ruin good friendships.
moral of the story. that question was probably supposed to just be a light-hearted and fun (while being a little bit of fandom bait) tiebreaker, but it did feel...off. i agree, smosh probably shouldn’t buy into it like this, and it would’ve been much funnier to have seen the joke go to iancorn or koah, as those two pairings have been okay with their shipping, (mostly because their respective shipping parties are pretty chill), but instead we got the normal fodder, probably for the insta and twitter badies.
anyway!
blah blah boundaries, blah blah clickbait fodder, blah blah modern marketing techniques bought from formally toxic shipping ideals rebranded (barely) into somewhat better shipping ideals.
shipping is okay if you’re doing it quietly for fun or for aesthetics, fun art, tiny fics, video edits, photo edits, or headcanons and aus.
the moment you even push it towards someone involved, is when it’s no longer cool
