Chapter Fifteen- Songcord

“It feels like my lungs are collapsing. Yet, I’m still breathing. I don’t know how.”

Kisre snorts from across the room, ignoring the glare you send her.

“You two just need to… get over it.”

“I want to get over! You forget Ronal. She’s stubborn. She thinks I betrayed her, but, I-”

The words die in your throat, because you can’t even put into words what has happened to you. Love is only a part of it, nothing else fits quite right. You feel- encompassed, whole. A belonging. Like this is the place you were always meant to be, the people you were always meant to know, and you find yourself wanting for nothing.

Kisre sighs, bringing you back to reality, grounding you. “I know. I do forget that. But you forget- the both of you forget- that you are sisters.”

A month since the web fell apart, and besides for the initial strain, the random feeling of Ronal’s absence, you are happy.

Lo’ak has long since been ungrounded, back out into the village, doing whatever the children do.

Ronal still let’s Neytiri study under her, albeit with a sneer on her face, and they never talk, unless it’s about the task at hand.

Jake is often off as well most of the day, and without Ronal to shadow, you find yourself with nothing to do. You spend your days with Kisre and some other friends, weaving baskets or nets, gathering fruits and nuts for your respective dinners.

But, you have gone home long ago, feigning tiredness, and now you add to your songcord to fill your mind.

You add one for Jake and Neytiri, one for you mating, one for the day you officially moved in with them. You add one for each of the children, preemptively add one for the return of your soul sister.

Her absence is one you have grown used to, your heart simply growing around the hole she leaves.

It’s a rare day- the children are still off playing, and you’re alone in the house, until footsteps come.

You hum to yourself as you work, feeling eyes on you, but you know who it is. You can sense them, feel them, smell them. You know them in distraction and you’re sure you would know them in death.

“Are you just going to stare?”

“Admiring, sweetheart,” Jake corrects, feeling him come closer to you.

He gets to the ground, laying on his back and placing his head in your lap just as you finish tying off the songcord. You hiss, but he only smiles, and your anger fades. How could you be mad at your mate?

He lets out a pleased sound, weakly lifting up his hand to place it on your cheek. “This,” he sighs, closing his eyes, “is the life.”

“The life?” Neytiri muses, sitting down across from you, close enough that your knees touch hers, leans forward so she fills your field of vision. She is all you can see, he is all you can feel, and it is everything. They are everything.

“The life.” Jake affirms, and Neytiri smiles fondly at him before noticing the songcord still in your hands.

“You added more,” she notes, reaching out and grabbing it from you. “Sing it to me.”

You sing it and they listen, Jake’s thumb rubbing your cheekbone, Neytiri staring at the songcord, following each bead as you sing the lyrics.

You decide there’s no need for complicated words to describe what you feel with them. You just feel like everything.

You watch the human machine land, a helicopter, Jake said. You were not scared at first, but you knew.

You knew what happened further out to sea- the demon ship, killing tulkun, and the humans so many years ago destroying Hometree.

So easily, the messenger had whispered. It fell to them like a leaf. Like nothing.

When you had left to see the commotion, too many people already crowding the mauri, you hadn’t been scared. You heard the murmurs as it approached, jet black with blue stripes, a reminder of all the humans were capable of.

When it had landed, it had blown the wind like a storm, but it wasn’t the storm you were used to- it was different, a totem of death. You weren’t sure how Jake could even stand to look at it.

When it started to land, you tore your eyes away from it, looking to the ground in front of you, seeing Jake stand right in front of it.

You had spent so long denying yourself him, and the bliss with him you had felt this past month was otherworldly. You wouldn’t lose him now.

“Jake! Jake!” you called, but he couldn’t hear you over the wind, and you could barely see him over the sand being whipped up.

Something burned in you, and you faintly realized that you were scared. For him, for yourself, for your newfound family and happiness. When you reach him, the wind almost pushing you back, you’re just barely able to touch his shoulder with your fingertips before he is turning, grabbing you and pulling you tight to his chest.

His arm is strong and sure around your waist, and you can feel his muscles moving under you as you bury your face in his chest, his arm moving up and down.

The helicopter starts to land, and you feel the chaos start to taper off, Jake cupping the back of your head with your other hand.

“It’s fine,” you hear him murmur, lips close to your ear, “it’s all fine, babygirl. Norm!” he greets, and the man in question- an Avatar, you guess, by the look of his Na’vi features and human clothes- nods back. You see his eyes linger on you for a moment-

“Let’s get the gear!” he shouts, instead of questioning who you are, why Jake’s arm is around you, or why his lips are in your hair.

“Neteyam!” Jake shouts, and your hands scramble for purchase when you feel him pushing you away because he is your safety, you anchor in the face of the unknown- your dam, stopping you from falling apart at the sight of the humans.

“Jake- Jake, no-”

“Take her and keep them back,”

Neteyam grabs your hand in his own, leading you over to the people gathered.

Tonowari comes forward, places a hand on your shoulder as he looks over you. His eyes narrow on Neteyam.

“Your father better know what he’s doing, boy.”

But he doesn’t speak of just the safety of his people, he speaks for the safety of you.

Her hand is cold and clammy in yours.

It has been, all night, ever since she returned. You don’t know why you thought it would be any different. The human lists off what is not wrong with her, and you feel the urge to hiss.

Your eyes scan over her again, ignoring the looks of the confused avatar, the confused human. His voice dies in his throat. It’s hard to ignore their technology, but Kiri, a sweet girl who you have come to love and think of as your own is more important. Your eyes narrow on something sticking out of her arm.

“Don’t!” the Avatar shouts as you reach over, seeing a clear liquid moving inside the tube. Nothing you know goes into a body like that, and you feel your stomach curl.

“What is this?” you ask, as the Avatar’s arm clamps around your wrist.

You jump back and hiss, slamming into Neytiri’s legs.

“I-I’m sorry-” he stammers, and you feel Neytiri crouch behind you, her arms circle around you. She hisses, daring them to speak, to come closer, to present any threat to her mate.

“Hey, hey,” Jake says, walking over with his hands out. “It’s alright. They’re trying to help, Y/N.”

The Avatar asks something in a strange dialect, the one of the humans, you guess, and you feel the urge to hiss again. You don’t know what’s he’s saying, and it scares you. But, Jake responds in Na’vi.

“Yes. She stays. She’s our mate.”

Their eyes trail over to you again, and Neytiri’s fingers dig into flesh above your collarbone. You feel the anger in her chest, hear her heavy breaths.

She is already on edge with Kiri being sick, but seeing you scared sets her off.

There is something like that, something in the air, when it comes to mates. A sort of understanding in the air, a deeper connection, and sometimes you almost swear you can hear Jake and Neytiri’s thoughts.

You know what Neytiri is thinking now. She is not angry. She is scared.

They work more, saying more words, sometimes in the human language, you assume because their is no words for it in Na’vi.

Ronal looks to you as she enters, quickly looks away. Neytiri drops your hand, walking over to her quickly.

You see the disgust on your sister’s face, the pure horror at the human technology. She does not understand it, so she fears it. You fear it too.

Something foolish flares in your chest- perhaps you can bond over that?

“I see that I am not needed,” she sneers, moving to leave. Neytiri hisses and grabs her hand.

“You are Tsahìk.”

The floor is quiet as you pad across it, the small sounds of the human machines being the only thing you can hear.

“Ronal,” you whisper, and she tears her eyes away from Neytiri. She only looks at you for a second before her eyes lower to the floor. “Sister. Please.”

She looks up at you for another moment, and you eyes flick anxiously between her and Kiri.

Something softens in her face, before the wall is back up again and it was as if it was never there.

“Then move these things,” she says, and there is silence for a moment.

“Out!” Neytiri screeches- and the people who were supposed to help your girl scramble. “You have done nothing!”

Not wanting to disrupt Ronal, you leave with Jake and the Avatar, the human looking into the mauri anxiously.

You stay away from him, instead sitting at Jake’s side, eyes fixed on Kiri. He wraps his arm around your shoulders, talks to the Avatar- Norm- as Jake has properly introduced you two.

“She said she could feel Eywa, she could hear her heartbeat.” There words are background noise, and you don’t process them, too busy silently praying, staring at Kiri as if she will suddenly rise, smile and ask why you are staring.

“That is classic…”

You turn at the sound of a foreign words coming from Jake’s mouth, the emotion he speaks it with. Fear, you realize.

“What?”

“Uh- frontal lobe epilepsy,” Norm says, and the words almost hurt your ears. You shake your head, trying to banish the memory of the odd sound.

“You see visions and experience religious ecstasy like the one she described.”

The human joins you, comically small next to the three of you, and Jake sighs heavily and kisses your hair.

“Plugging into the spirit tree is some sort of trigger for her.” Norm continues, and the words connect in your mind. “You definitely can’t let her do that anymore.”

“What?” Jake asks, voicing your thoughts. “Ever?”

“They are fools,” you hiss, pulling Jake’s arm tighter around yourself. “They know nothing of us, of our customs. They know nothing of Eywa,” you sneer.

“Jake…” the human says, “Y/N. It’s a simple matter. If she seizes underwater like that again- she could die.”

You feel Jake tense next to you, his shoulder flexing around you.

“Kiri…” you whisper, thinking of the joy she will be deprived of. You look back to her again, feeling sick suddenly.

It is a blur, shoving Jake’s arm off of you, heading into the mauri, because Ronal can still save her if you are near her, yes?

Too entranced in the movement, the healing, she doesn’t notice you come in. Neytiri does, reaching for you, grabbing your hand and pulling you down next to her.

The next minute or so passes torturously, until Tuk gasps, grabs Kiri’s hand.

“Kiri! You’re awake,” she coos, and you watch as Kiri stirs, until your eyes pull to Ronal.

She leans back on her heels, arm resting on Kiri’s leg.

Her eyes meet yours through the sound of Kiri’s cries.

“Thank you, sister, thank you,” you whisper, before you grab Kiri’s other hand and raise it to your lips.

You think you will add another bead to your songcord.

HEY HEY HOW R U DOING. ITS FINALLY CHRISTMAS TIME SO MERRY CHRIMUH (2023 passed too fast…) im the one who asked for the strawhats x anxiety! Teen! Reader!!!! And im an angsty person so I just wanna ask…

Can you write Strawhats x struggling! Teen! Reader?? It’s the exact same reader btw, they’re strong and kind and helpful and so sweet, has a tough exterior even if they’re just a kid and the youngest on the ship. And when I mean struggling I mean that they deal with self h*te, their anxiety got worse and so on. They didn’t plan to tell the crew but the crew has noticed their behavior. How they go to their room instead of playing with them like they used to, how they just sit down and zone out, a habit of their’s being to put their hand up to their face and rub in annoyance and stress just like they do with the hand on the chest when they’re anxious. The crew sees them being gloomy when they’re alone or whenever the adults look away (putting on the facade) and the reader doesn’t look like they’re taking care of themselves and they’re looking tired and unmotivated.

(kinda describing me a lil bit I just wanna see my comfort characters react to this sorta thing-)

And they finally confront her about it and after some convincing they finally spill all thats inside and get the love that they don’t think they deserve!!! I love angst sorry…

ayy sorry I'm a little late with this one but here it is 😭, I hope you had a good Christmas, that you started the year on the right foot and may everything go well for now!! 😌

─ You thought your anxiety attacks would end once you confessed how you felt to the crew, partially accepting their help, and while it worked for a while, you went back into your shell.

─ The mind of adolescents is incredibly moldable, and yours decided to take the most contemptuous path towards yourself, the attacks were controlled, but the self-hatred that you began to feel towards yourself made them return.

─ You felt guilty and your pride did not allow you to seek help a second time, feeling that you would be more of a nuisance to the rest.

─ Your appearance underwent changes as well as your behaviors, your energy was drained, you began to lock yourself in your room more, not be present at group celebrations…

─ Eventually they noticed your sudden change again, everything was fine and from one day to the next you become like a stranger with them again, Robin could notice it instantly.

─ All your actions gave you away, but Chopper recognized the signs of anxiety, your rapid breathing, your eyes moving uncontrollably, although he did not understand why you touched your face so much, he thought it was one of the causes of your anxiety.

─ They accepted that you were a stubborn teenager, but this had to be nipped in the bud just as Nami said once she found out that your anxiety attacks had gotten worse lately, since the indirect way of helping wasn't working now.

─ It was much more stressful for you that they decided to confront you directly, since you used to run away from conversations related to your well-being, being something that you feel insecure talking about, you preferred to avoid it.

─ You tried to escape from that talk with bad excuses, but Sanji's kindness made you sit in the chair like a scolded child.

─ Jinbe silenced Luffy because he knew that he was going to be too direct with you, and although they wanted to be, they needed a little tact to talk to you, Usopp took care of that.

─ You avoided eye contact for most of the talk, not wanting to confront them while you spoke.

─ Again, you ended up crying as you let your feelings come to light, you felt trapped enough to let it all out, much more sincerely than the previous time, feeling a little embarrassed by your cruel thoughts towards you.

─ Luffy scolded you again, but he gave you the best hug you could have received in years, everyone joined in afterwards, except Zoro, who watched from afar with a small smile.

─ You felt calmer after the talk, but it will still be difficult for you to express yourself about how you feel, they assured you that it was okay, that it was okay to want to have some time alone when you feel bad, but that they will always be there to help you with all your problems whatever they are.

"Acceptable Violence" in OFMD Season 2: deconstructing violence within the context of the show's parameters

I've been doing a lot of thinking about violence and the second season of Our Flag Means Death. I've come to some conclusions that I would like to share, but I would like to preface my thoughts with a disclaimer or two:

I did not like the second season, for myriad reasons, some of which I will outline here. But I am not here to attack you if you liked the season. I am not here to make commentary on who you are as a person or your personal taste if you liked the season. My not liking the season does not mean you can't like the season. In short: my dislike of the season is not about you at all! Also, this is not an academic paper. Which doesn't mean I might not do that in the future, but for now this is just an assembly of analysis and thoughts. If you do not care to read analytical criticism of something you deeply enjoyed? I invited you to scroll onward. If you liked the second season but would like to hear some of the reasons why many, including myself, didn't - carry on! The rest is under the cut.

The first season of Our Flag Means Death dips its toes into the world of piracy by following the unfolding story of Stede Bonnet, the newly minted former aristocrat-turned-pirate who dreams of a new sort of piracy; a gentler, more polite means of pirating. Things, as they said, did not go according to plan. The first season does an excellent job of laying the complex groundwork for an in-world set of principles which tell us what sort of violence is "normal" or "acceptable" in the context of the show and what isn't. (Please assume from here on out that when I say acceptable and normal the "quotes" are implied, as I am not talking about what is acceptable and normal in real life.) It does this through narrative framing, by softening more intense instances of violence through comedy and by pushing it off-screen, and by establishing who is a good guy and who is Not. Unacceptable: Stede Bonnet getting beat on, tied up, and bullied by the Badmintons and their ilk as a child. He's soft and likes flowers! He's got a mean dad! No one likes bullies! It's framed as a negative, it's not super funny (the camera cuts to Stede's face both in the past and present looking distressed, and Stede is the hero, so this can be generally accepted as bad.) This leads us to: Acceptable: Badminton getting whacked over the head and falling on his own sword. This I would categorize as what people have been referring to as "looney tune violence." He was a bully! He's part of a colonial navy! He was being absolutely horrible to Stede! It's funny that Stede is so inept!

Stede feels guilty about it, it causes him trauma, but that trauma is treated, quite often, comedically (see Badminton's "ghost" taunting him, characters treatment of his breakdown, etc). The context clues for whether or not this is acceptable violence are baked right into the writing, too. Oluwande says - claiming that Stede killed Badminton on purpose would gain him the respect of his crew. This is violence that in-world is both acceptable, expected, and also respected for the captain of a pirate ship. (See also: Murdering and/or tying up the remaining British navy crew and putting them through the same thing Stede went through. It's framed as triumphant, Stede having been vindicated, the crew celebrating it as a victory.) Unacceptable: Stede's concept of "soft piracy" of course comes crashing down when his whimsical attempt to woo the Spanish navy is cut short by his getting gut-stabbed.

Stede and the crew are being framed as the heroes of the story and the Spaniards are framed as the bad guys; this setup is why this violence, while totally within the realms of something our crew would do, is categorized as unacceptable. It's also important to note, however, that while it could have been quite a bit more graphic and disturbing if shot differently, the swelling symphony, the comedic cuts of the Spaniards triumphantly getting their ass kicked, softens the blow. Other acceptable instances of violence: The snail fork - horrifying if you think about it, but the narrative softens the blow. The guy was just really racist, giving us a sense of vindictive pleasure, and the violence is all off-screen (we don't actually have to see someone getting skinned with a snail fork). The French ship - again, horrifying if you think too much about people trapped on a burning ship in the middle of the ocean. But, they had all just been huge racist shit-heads who had harmed our heroes. In the context of the narrative, it is framed as being justified. We also don't actually see anyone burning to death, and we get a very funny shot of Ed looking at Stede in awe, and Stede looking very please with himself, confirming in-narrative that this was okay. Other unacceptable instances of violence:

Karl the bird - Jack is framed as an antagonist; he comes between Ed and Stede, obstructing the narrative subplot. Buttons, and by extension Karl, are part of the crew, the heroes. When Karl dies Buttons is devastated, everyone looks uncomfortable, and it's the last straw for Stede to kick Jack off the ship. Plus, there's the an "innocent character" thing similar to Stede as a child getting bullied; Karl was an animal, with no defenses, who did nothing wrong.

Finally, of course, we arrive at the moment that Lucius is pushed from the ship. Unacceptable: By all accounts, pushing people from ships is probably not outside the realm of things that pirates Definitely Do. But here we have another great instance of framing heroes and bad guys. In this case, we have a hero (Ed), seemingly killing another hero (Lucius), who was not only just trying to help him, but was absolutely not expecting violence. We also have a "death" that happened off-screen. We don't see Lucius "drowning." Had Lucius actually died, I think this would have been horrifying. Narratively and thematically, it would not have fit into the spirit of the show, because you could no longer frame Ed as a hero. There would be no real way that I can see to meaningfully redeem him in the context of a comedy, even a "black comedy" (which I do not believe OFMD is). And genuinely, I don't know anyone who thought Lucius was actually dead, so while what Ed did was horrible and awful and needed to be atoned for, it wasn't Final. It wasn't Irredeemable. He didn't become a capital v Villain. The rules of the first season made sense to me. Everything that happened fit narratively, was thematically appropriate, and established a certain set of rules and conventions to follow. It gets dark, and it does push the envelope of what I could bear in a "romantic comedy." Ed cutting off Izzy's toe is tempered (cutting off his littlest toe with a comedically large pair of scissors) but feeding them to him is disturbing. Izzy was an antagonist, not a villain, so giving him treatment reserved for, say, the British navy characters, and doing so graphically and on-screen, was A Lot. This coming from me, who really, REALLY hated Izzy at this point in time. But I think there was an underlying sense of hope that things would improve, resolve, and move forward through character growth and narrative. Stede was coming back to make amends; maybe Ed would find his way back to normalcy, and they'd meet in the middle. It was expected that apologies would be made and Ed could come back from the unacceptable things he did to Lucius, to the Crew, and to Izzy especially. That there would be character and interpersonal growth for them.

Unfortunately, the second season is where the show's parameters around acceptable and unacceptable violence absolutely falls apart. It's never quite clear why something is acceptable vs not, and we never see the character and interpersonal growth "promised" by the narrative which would redeem the dark tonal shift and veer the story back towards comedy. In order for Ed to be redeemed, the violence being framed as unacceptable during his Kraken era could not be so unacceptable that it crosses the line into irredeemable. Ed could not cross the line in the minds of the audience from "hero" to "villain." But the first three episodes of the season... were dark. They crossed the line. It felt like a character assassination to me. Ed's abuse of the crew, the continued maiming of Izzy (who at this point is hurdling into a sympathetic character arc of growth and redemption,) the self-harm, the attempted murder-suicide of his crew... most of it was on-screen, not at all tempered by comedy, and brutal. It wasn't heroes vs villains, it was supposed hero causing extensive harm and trauma to other heroes. The writing in these episodes were narratively cohesive and well-paced. They were not, however, thematically appropriate to a romantic comedy. At this point in the season I still felt like it was building towards a breaking point where Ed would come back to himself, where character growth would be achieved, and amends would be made. I was willing to hold tight.

But it didn't work in terms of the story that was setup in season one. It would have taken an incredible amount of character growth to even begin to come back from that; but I trusted the narrative to deliver. However, the real problem is that this season tried to rewrite the in-show parameters of what constitutes acceptable violence in ways that are uncomfortable and contrary to reality in ways that I find harmful. (I will be clear, in reference to recent discourse, I do feel the head-butt was comedic. It was looney tunes violence, it was well within the context of a romantic comedy, and it worked for me tonally, even though it's obviously not appropriate in real life.) Ed's chair throwing in the context of a man who had spent three episodes inflicting increasingly terrible domestic violence on people who loved and cared for him, who stuck by him -- in the larger context of him doing all this just because he felt rejected by a romantic partner -- is presented as in-show acceptable violence. It's presented as falling within the parameters. Proof? We are expected to still like Ed, and root for Ed, and want Ed to get better, and cheer for the romantic pairing "getting back together," and everything else. He is still presented as a hero. Sure, the show is telling us that what Ed did in his Kraken era is bad; but not so Bad that we shouldn't forgive him for it when he has made no real move to make amends for what he did. Like the crew, and Izzy specifically, we are meant to simply... move forward. That line about "getting away with it" without consequences I thought was a commentary on how Ed would not get to do that, actually was just... what happened. The season also wants me to believe that in the in-show parameters that Ed would hurt absolutely anybody but DEFINITELY NOT Stede, because Stede is his ultra super special soul mate and he would never do him any harm. This is not how things work in real life, and it is not a disbelief I am willing to suspend uncritically. Do I believe Ed, in the context of the show, would hurt Stede? Nope. I think it's more likely Stede would hurt Ed than the other way around. But I don't like the message that this in-show parameter sends, about how violence, particularly DV, is inflicted. I don't like being told that there is a super special person that this person who has abused others won't hurt. It's a bad message, and bad writing, and bad in-show precedence to set.

I'm not going to say all this without mentioning the stereotypes surrounding men of color, particular Indigenous men, which paints them as abusers. These stereotypes have been mentioned in regards to people talking about Ed's abuse this season. It's important to examine and be critical of oneself as a white person, and look long and hard at these biases. I don't want to fall into the trap of racist biases, and I don't want it to go unmentioned. I have thought long and hard about this. I've done a lot of self-examination on the subject of Ed and abuse. It has brought me back to my point of character assassination; I think the show fell into those stereotypes itself. I think Ed's characterization this season was problematic, and a disservice to the character as laid out in season one, and that's a big part of my disappointment with this season. (I also have a lot of thoughts on how Stede's character, who has been handed an immense amount of power over Ed and his agency as a character, is also extremely problematic. I will get into that in another post; it needs its own. So I'm not here to say Stede himself is not a Problem because he absolutely is and I will shout it from the rooftops.) "But somekindofcontraption," you say! "Ed has trauma!" Yes. That is very true. And it certainly explains some things, but as in real life, it absolutely does not excuse them. Ed's narrative was all about the perpetuation of trauma, particularly generational trauma, with absolutely no criticism or breakage of this cycle in any meaningful or productive way. It set up the story and did no work to resolve it. Ed was simply fixed because he and Stede said I love you and kissed a few times. The romance's "resolution" was unearned and unsatisfying. Neither Stede nor Ed were held accountable for what they did.

Then there was Izzy, who spent the whole of his arc being redeemed, moving forward as a character. He was the only character, I would say, with any meaningful growth. He's also the only one whose story was explicitly about being queer and queer discovery, rather than queerness merely being and incidental part of it. He's the only one who shows any accountability. Right up until the point that he died, his story was the best-written out of all of them. Then he dies. Izzy's death, and the ways that tonally it does not fit into the narrative, is another post onto itself. For now, I'll leave you with all of these rambling thoughts, condensed down as best I could into this tumblr post. If you have any further thoughts, I would love to hear them in good faith. For now, I say, that it's okay to be disappointed. This story was so meaningful to so many, and to be so thoroughly let down is hard. Grief is grief. Take care out there, and be kind to yourself, and be kind to those that are grieving.

Dominant and submissive dynamics. A power exchange where the sub gives their power to the dom and trusts them to lead.

Blood Play

Can be blood drinking, causing a character to bleed, or blood just being a point of (sexual/romantic) interest. Does not have to be the pairing's blood, such as Character A kills a character and gets their blood on them and Character B is really into that, or drawing blood with a bite. (Hint hint towards a way to cross this with omegaverse ;) )

Incest

Can be whatever familial relation, including adoptive or step family!

Daddybastian and the other DILFs of Kuroshitsuji

Daddy kink! It can be any Kuroshitsuji character, not just Sebastian.

Size Kink

Focuses on penis size. Can have overlap with height difference and focusing on the general body size of a partner.

Cannibalism

One character eating another character of their species or close enough to their species, such as a demon, vampire, werewolf eating a human.

Loss of Virginity/First Time

A character having sex for the first time ever or the first time with a specific partner. We're pretty lax with this one, ie loss of virginity can still count for Ciel if it's his consensual first time, and it also works for dub/noncon depending on what you want to go with!

Scarification

Burning, biting, cutting, or scratching in order to leave a scar and manipulate the wound to make a specific design.

Priest Kink/Religious Imagery

A character can be a priest or it could just be about religious imagery, such as fucking in a church or Character A getting plowed while Character B wears a crucifix that swings between them.

Weapons Play

Incorporating weapons as part of the scene. Can be a knife, gun, or whatever else you come up with!

Breeding/Omegaverse

Does not have to include both, and breeding does not have to include pregnancy, it can just be about the act of breeding/mating.

Height Difference

One character is taller/larger than the other. Often focuses on one character being smaller or larger. Overlaps with but does not have to include size kink.

Bondage

It can be as handcuffs, tying a character to a head board, one character being tied up while kidnapped, or even shibari!

Dub/Noncon

Dubious consent or non consensual. Dubious consent can including drugging/high/drunk, acting on instinct, curses, fuck or die, coercion, or mating cycles/heat. You can also choose CNC (consensual non consent or rape roleplay) here if you want!

Monster Fucking

A character is a monster of your choosing.

You can use multiple prompts for the same entry! We know a lot of these have overlap (daddy kink/ D&S, size kink/height difference/monster fucking, monster fucking/omegaverse, omegaverse/D&S/scarification/blood play, weapons play/scarification for some examples) and we encourage y’all to fill the prompt as you see fit!

Just for fun, here are my rapid fire rambling thoughts on the ATLA ships and platonic dynamics hehe (please don’t go full ship wars tho - these are just my opinions as a chill multishipper!)

My Favorite Ships:

• Zukka - My current brainrot and main ship!! I know they aren’t canon but I really love them and their potential okay😭I just feel like their personalities would work so well! Sokka would call Zuko on his shit and Zuko would be good at grounding Sokka when he needs it. Plus I have seen some absolutely breathtaking AUs with this ship! And fire-and-ice vibes except gay! Them <3

• Kataang - Cutiessss!! I love them! They may not be the ship I think about most often, but when I do think about them, they’re adorable! Aang is such a “my wife” guy and Katara absolutely adores him back! Also the last airbender x last southern waterbender dynamic goes HARD! I like that these two are canon!

• Yuetara - Listen I know they barely interacted but THEY’VE ACTUALLY GROWN ON ME SO MUCH LATELY AND I VERY HIGH KEY SHIP THEM! Something about like, Katara thinking about Yue when she bends is so😭Their story would be heartbreaking in the best way!! Sapphic noncanon blorbos <3

• Mailee - These two are SO cute and have so much potential rahhh!! Again, love some noncanon sapphics <3

• Batkoda - Super SUPER cute and silly and fun! The dads fr <3 Bato is either Katara and Sokka’s adopted uncle or their stepdad and I love it for them hehe! This usually pairs well with a “Hakoda adopts Zuko” AU lmao!

Other Canon/Relatively Popular Ships:

• Zutara - A pretty good ship! I see the potential and tbh it’s very very fun to think about sometimes!!! However, some of y’all toxic Zutara stans need to leave my boy Aang alone lmao. Those who are chill tho, I rock with y’all!! Overall, I’m not opposed if it’s done well and I do occasionally seek out Zutara content! I personally do prefer seeing/writing them as found siblings tho, especially with the Azula and Katara parallels!!

• Sukka - Canon cuties!! I really like them! Suki my BELOVED <3 She’s so underrated!

• Yukka - Also canon cuties! They make me sad tho ahhhhh😭😭😭

• Maiko - Also ALSO canon cuties!! They have an interesting dynamic that I can really appreciate! And gotta love Mai <3

• Jinko - Jin my beloved! These two had a super cute dynamic during the one episode they had together lmaoooo, tho I don’t think about this ship too too often.

• Tokka - I don’t mind it if it’s them getting together as adults! But tbh I personally don’t prefer shipping them as teens and I think Toph’s crush was just a typical young girl crush on someone slightly older lol. Definitely not horrible and most Tokka shippers are relatively chill! I like to think Sokka sees Toph as a little sister tho.

Now For Some Of The Crackship-y/Less Popular Ships (based on ships I’ve actually seen):

• Zukki (Zuko/Sokka/Suki) - Power throuple fr and I love some polyamory!! While I mostly lean plain Zukka, this is extremely fun to think about and would be a great dynamic!

• Mai/Ty Lee/Suki - Saw this in a Zukka fic once and it was adorableeeeee! I may not have plans to actively write this or anything, but it’s cute! Another power throuple!

• Jetko - I don’t think they would be compatible long term, but by god they are very very fun to think about in a “Jet flirts with Zuko and Zuko is completely oblivious and they share one kiss before everything goes to shit” way lmao!

• Taang - I can respect it!! I will always love them as chaos siblings personally, but it’s a totally valid and chill ship!

• Katoph - Not a bad ship at all! I’ve only come across like one post tho lmao. Also I do think I heavily prefer them as found sisters, but that’s just me personally! Again, totally a valid and chill ship!

• Azutara - I’m very neutral on this lmao. I don’t despise it at all and it could be pretty interesting?? But tbh really not something I plan to seek out.

• Azulaang - I mean?? I’m also pretty neutral on this one. Aang would be kind to her if she was trying to get help but…idk lmao.

• Tyzula - I see the potential, but I personally think Mai and Ty Lee had a healthier and more interesting and more realistic dynamic. Just my preference tho!

(I think I just want Azula to be in therapy before I reallyyyyy ship her lmao, but NOT THE KIND OF “THERAPY” SHE WAS GIVEN IN THE COMICS)

• Zukaang - I don’t love this as a ship honestly. The canon age gap as teens is sketchy for my personal taste, tho I’ve seen people ship them in “Aang was 16 when he got frozen” AUs and that’s…better and I can get behind it a little! It would be interesting! But I think Roku being Zuko’s great-grandpa just still throws me off of this ship. I don’t have any beef with the shippers tho! I’m very “live and let live” and I have seen so much worse lol.

Can’t Forget My Fav Platonic Dynamics!

• Sokka and Aang - Two found brothers who share one idiot braincell when they interact LMAO! Love them always <3

• Sokka and Katara - The siblings ever!!

• Zuko and Aang - Enemies to found brothers!! Canon besties! I love their friendship and their parallels SO MUCH!!

• Toph and Katara - Absolutely ADORABLE as found sisters!!!! Love them!

• Zuko and Katara - I really like their development in a platonic sense and I think they’re very very fun and lovely found siblings by the end!!!! Zuko is 100% the brother that just “yeah my sister can and will whoop your ass” LMAO!

• Zuko and Toph - Also very found siblings in my head!! Only have a handful of solo interactions in canon but I DON’T CARE! I WILL FOUND FAMILY THEM ANYWAY! I’m a “Toph seeks out Zuko for sibling hugs/cuddles when she’s cold because he’s basically a space heater” truther.

• Uncle Iroh and the Gaang - Zuko needs to learn to share because that is ALL OF THEIR Uncle!!!

• Hakoda and Zuko - I thrive in this section of the fandom!! They have exactly one (1) frame together in canon, but I ADORE Dadkoda adopting Zuko! Something about it is just so wholesome and cute!!! My very very fav ATLA fics are this trope!!#LetHakodaBitchSlapOzaiAndAdoptZuko2024

• Uncle Iroh and Zuko - God they make me so ALSNDKSNXNCNSNSNXNX, y’know?

• The Gaang as a whole - Obvious I know, but I really do love them😭They all bonded sm and I adore their little family!! I eat up fanart of the Gaang cuddling like CANDY omg. And yes Suki is included in the Gaang because WHY WOULDN’T SHE BE!

“How long until we get off this miserable iceberg?” Azula asks as Ty Lee is pinning her topknot in place for her. She hasn’t slept since the wedding—there’s been too much to do—but getting out of the wedding robes she'd knocked it loose.

“We can be ready to leave within the hour, Princess Azula,” the captain says from the hallway outside her bunk.

“Good,” Azula says crisply. “Expect to be.”

“Where should we put Yue?” Ty Lee pipes up. “All her stuff’s still on the dock, right?”

"Yes, I suppose it is," Azula replies with a sigh. Yue is currently outside the ship being fussed over by more servants than Azula had previously seen in the entirety of the North Pole, and she has no idea how the other’s standing it. “Put her things in the hold with mine. And . . . do we actually have another respectable bunk on this ship, Captain?”

“Er,” he says with a wince. “No, Princess Azula. Your quarters are the only ones in any condition to house . . . well, a princess.”

“Of course they are,” Azula mutters. This ship is pathetic. “Fine, figure out what she needs to have immediate access to and bring it here. We’re not going to start off a brand-new treaty by offending the locals now.”

“I think we’ve already offended the locals,” Mai says dryly.

“Yes, by intentional calculation,” Azula says. “Not because some damn fool decided we only needed one presentable room in this entire ship. Where are you two even sleeping?”

“There’s some little bunks. And there’s hammocks in the hold,” Ty Lee says with a shrug, slipping the ornament into her hair. Azula makes a face at the thought, appalled.

“I’m getting a bigger boat commissioned,” she says. “Someone somewhere owes me a wedding present, they’ll do it.”

“Please do,” Mai says. “I’m sick of sleeping in a box.”

“Oh, it’s not so bad,” Ty Lee says airily as she finishes the last little adjustments to Azula’s hair, then pauses and frowns down at the back of her head. Azula eyes her in the mirror.

“What is it?” she says.

“There’s . . . ink?” Ty Lee says, sounding puzzled. “On the back of your neck.”

“There’s what?” Azula’s nose wrinkles in distaste.

Young RinHaru is everything

I know this is my first post on this blog but it isn't my first time ranting, so buckle up and hear me out!

Also, disclaimer: my ships are my ships, and your ships are yours. If you're a MakoHaru or SouRin or basically anything but a RinHaru shipper, I respect you, and hope that you'll respect me in turn, so please don't attack me for my opinions ty!

Genuinely. What. Is up with Haru and Rin in the Free! movie about their youth??? "High Speed! Free! Starting Days!"????

Guys, it took me the longest time ever to even bring myself to watch that movie for 2 different reasons: 1) Rin was not in it, and 2) Someone on Reddit said it was very MakoHaru coded.

It's pretty obvious by the name of the post but I don't ship MakoHaru. Yes they have cute moments sometimes that melt my heart, but overall Haru takes Makoto for granted pretty often, and it only really hit him that he might lose his friend when Makoto said he was going to uni in Tokyo. Anyways, that's unrelated since I'm trying to talk about the movie, but yeah I really only see them as best friends that support each other.

Getting back to the main point, I really wasn't interested in watching a movie that not only didn't have my favorite shark in it, but also heavily featured a ship I didn't like. Then I decided those were pathetic reasons not to watch it, and the prospect of seeing young Makoto won me over.

And then I watched it. And.

Why didn't anybody tell me that despite the fact that Rin isn't even in this movie, the fact that he isn't there is driving the entire main conflict for Haru??? It was actually a crazy surprise, I wasn't expecting that at all and I was genuinely shook by it. Nearly the whole movie, Haru is plagued by loneliness and doesn't even realize he's lonely until Ikuya breaks down. And then he acknowledges that without Rin there, he was literally struggling. So much to the point that he hallucinated Rin being there and swimming with him. Nevermind the fact that Rin was in the same school as him for maybe 3 months, he had this big of an impact and it shows. Basically a lot of the movie was Haru being sad that Rin was gone, and he still angsts over him until episode 1 when Rin is back from Australia.

Also, his reaction to Rin's letter was so cute, and the letter itself killed me because it's so clearly a confession, one that Haru basically reciprocated. I know Japan likes censorship but oh my god Sousuke was trying to say it was a confession letter without saying it, because he said stuff like "you can see where Rin originally wrote you" and "it was one-sided like he wasn't expecting a response" (don't hold me to these, I'm a bit lazy to get the exact quotes).

You know when people do that? In CONFESSION LETTERS. And then Haru was like I want to be like you too Rin. And then I hear that this is MakoHaru coded? I mean the pool scene was cute but I wouldn't file this under the Makoharu folder just yet. I think it's one of those that goes under into the Undecided, along with Eternal Summer. I do think it's pretty obvious that the creators endgame was RinHaru though, considering what unfolded in The Final Stroke movie. I'm glad too, they finally stopped teasing millions of different ships for the sake of the fanbase, and just stuck to one.

It's pretty clear that people's ships definitely color their summary of events, seeing as the Reddit person told me this was MakoHaru without at all mentioning Rin. I do that often too, it's hard to not do so when you have an opinion, so the next best thing is to respect opinions :)

Star Wars Legends Highlight of the Week: Honor Among Thieves by James S. A. Corey

This is a new feature where a fan will share one thing they love from Star Wars Legends – a book, a comic, an author, a character, an event, or anything else they want to highlight – and tell us more about it.

Today’s highlight is Honor Among Thieves by James S. A. Corey (actually the pen name of writing team Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, whom you may recognize as the writers of The Expanse), a 2014 Legends novel, and we’re talking with Dessi (@otterandterrier).

Tell us about your Legends highlight. What is it? What’s it about?

Honor Among Thieves is the second novel in the Empire and Rebellion duology (the first one being Razor’s Edge, a previous Legends highlight), and one of the last books published in the Legends universe by Del Rey. This book is Han’s story, and is told entirely from his POV.

The story is set about a year after Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, and our heroes start off scattering through the galaxy in their respective missions. Han and Chewie are sent to the Core to retrieve Scarlet Hark, a high-level spy who is after a thief in possession of secret, deadly information stolen from under the Empire’s (and her) nose – and that the Empire is willing to do anything to get back. Han doesn’t want to get involved, as this is way above his paycheck. But then he realizes that Leia is at a gathering on Kiamurr, the very same planet their thief is headed to, which means the Empire will be hot on his heels. That makes up his mind about helping Scarlet get there first!

The plot is quite the wild goose chase, and you have to suspend your sense of disbelief many times and forget specialized bits of lore in order to buy it. Even so, it’s really fun and gripping, and I appreciate the way that the main conflict is used to give us excellent insight into our favourite smuggler’s mind.

What makes this a Legends highlight for you? What do you love about it?

This is one of my favourite Legends books, because I love Han Solo. I love the intensely caring, occasionally dorky, bad at flirting, barely concealing a soft interior Han Solo that somehow we were fortunate enough to get in the Original Trilogy and, somehow, so many people missed. And that’s the Han Solo we get here! I love getting to see the narrative peeling off his self-admitted layers, contemplating his involvement with the rebellion, his new relationships, and the man he could have been had circumstances not put him on the path of an old Jedi and an idealistic farmboy, by setting up a contrast with an old acquaintance that shows up. We also get to see how competent and clever he really is, something that is often neglected.

Favorite moment or scene?

There’s this scene where the group is walking through a jungle, and a character is about to shoot at a large mud creature that scared her—but Han stops her. He explains that the creature is harmless, then he pats its snout and tells it to look out for humans. Leia calls him an animal lover, to which Han replies: “If everyone got to kill anything that looked big and scary, Chewie would never be able to leave the ship.” I love this little moment because it shows that soft, caring, yet practical side of Han that not many people get to see, and it’s also a nice moment of connection between Han and Leia. Han’s concern over creatures that are “just trying to make it through another day” also gets called back towards the end, rounding off Han’s overall spot-on characterization—although that’s all I can say without spoiling the book.

Anything else you’d like to share about it?

A few other reasons I love this book:

It develops Han and Leia’s early relationship: as a shipper, the UST and the moments of deeper understanding between them here make me squeal. We see Leia through Han’s eyes and beyond his façade, and how he goes from “I can’t stand her” to “I will kill anyone who tries to hurt her.”

Scarlet Hark FTW: This OC is a bit of a perfect male fantasy, but I like her a lot. Intelligent, badass, take-no-shit female character? Yes please! I particularly love that she and Leia get along so well and it’s never a competition between them. She’s a really interesting character to explore, and I’d love to see the OT gang teaming up with her again.

Han and Luke’s relationship isn’t forgotten: I really appreciate that the authors gave this friendship the importance it deserves, with Han thinking several times that he’s sticking with the Rebellion mainly to look after Luke (which is a better motivation than him staying because he wants to sleep with Leia).

Hey There! Can I please request a one shot (or whatever you prefer) with Zuko, where reader is part of his ship crew from season one, and during one of those parties they made sometimes Zuko and reader befriend? Thank you!!

Being in the formation wasn’t easy, especially when your father was close to the royal family, he was an important war soldier and was one of irohs students... it made growing up hard, always having to show respect and to always look at the way you act, since your childhood was mostly filled within the fire lords home

though you never got to meet the royal children, just rare incounter, sometimes you would see the elder prince give you looks, but general iroh was always sweet

And you barely got to see them once you grew up, iroh let you meet zuko on his 16 birthday, you didn’t know why but the prince was very shy at you, trying to act tough as Azula just stared at you

But that was a long time ago, after the sudden death of the fire lord and irohs son you stopped going over there, your father was gone more often as well. But he refused to bring you over there after Ozai took the crown

the rest of your childhood was with your family, staying inside your home, the horrors of ozai known to your family alone, your father wants you all too flee to the earth kingdom since he’s friends with the emperor, but your mother refused to leave at this time, it would be a sign of betrayal

but once you all heard of OzaI requesting all of the noblemen to the castle you had no choice, he requested everyone and there first born there, so your father faked a smile and went

He was to afraid of banishment, but iroh said that will never happen to him as long as he still has some power, you all gathered up inside a room, for a first time in a while you saw Zuko, the boy immediately saw you with his uncle as he gulped

you can only look away in fear, following your father to his place, they where right next to iroh, front row seats to the first borns banishment

After that your father joined the prince on the journey to the avatar, being forced by the hand of Osai as the leader made sure no one stepped in his way

you accompanied your father for parties they’ve thrown, all being set up by iroh as the prince was never seen.. until today

The avatar has been found and will be located in the southern water tribe. Sneaking away to train.. but the fire nation decided to take armies there after the celebration

that’s what you’ve heard from iroh as you sit alone on the ship, twirling the sleeve of your dress as you think about the consequences of the fire nation…

“What are you doing up here?”

Your spine shivers in fear as you look bedside you, prince zuko standing next to you staring at your soul, Ty our eyes immediately going to the ground as you hold your hand tight

“I wanted to get away from the noise..” you say not knowing what to do with this.. zuko seems to think the same thing before he sighs, sitting down next to you as you look on surprised

“My uncle always sets these up to loud.. I barely get any sleep because of his stupidity” zuko says holding his army shoulder pad, it being damaged by water as you don’t respond

zuko seems to notice this as he chuckles sourly “Your afraid of me.”

“I’m sorry… I never meet you before..” you answer truthfully as you look at him with a fearful look, zuko looking at you surprise before he pulls a small yet noticeable smile

“Yes you have. We’ve meet on my birthday, you where young but you could have remembered.. we’ve meet plenty of times without you knowing.”

you look at him confused at this, zuko smiling at you before he rest his head on his leg, his pony tail hair down as you notice he’s in his bed clothes

“I’ve seen you around the palace. Always next to my uncle or your father. You looked like a lost turtle duck when they left you alone”

“I didn’t realize you where there. Iroh always told me you where training with oza- fire lord Ozai…” you correct yourself as zuko notices, his smile gone as he seems to scoff at the name

“Not like you where smart enough to. Father always said you where just a afraid little girl. To afraid to even meet the royal children anymore.”

His eyes roll at you as you look down embarrassed, both of you going silent as you sigh looking at the moon

”Can you blame me… you and Azula weren’t very welcoming.. I couldn’t even look your father in the eyes let alone you..”

Zuko looks at you with a unreadable look before he reaches his hand out, you look at is confused as he finally speak

“How about a no over then. I’m prince zuko.”

He seems to be slightly embarrassed from your lack of voice before you smile at him happily

“I’m y/n”

after that night he requested you on his ship at all times, iroh was scared at first but then he saw how happy zuko was with you, a true friend at his side… Someone that he can trust more than himself

that was the first night where you and zuko befriended..the first page of the long life you would have with the prince..

I caught a Celebi (He/She/They) by COMPLETE ACCIDENT so now I'm kinda stuck with them, and I kinda got adopted by a Dimension hopping Iron called Iron Eclipse (It/Its)… no, I do not expect you to know what that is.

Call me a fake if you want, I don't care, just try not to hold me down in one spot, got it? Wow I don't like this part the most, why was I such a jerk in my intro??

Anyway, I might visit ya if I feel like, I have two adopted (not legally but who gives a shit) sisters @queen-of-the-phantoms and @pokedexcamp! I'm dating @silveredfeathers and living with him and his wife (and now my Girlfriend-??) @trainerlynda.

Hi I am now fully in love with Daisy and Glitch and will now consume any/all details you have on the character-

I got this ask SO long ago before @joyfullyacat and I really had a set universe for Daisy and Glitch, and to be PERFECTLY honest, we *still* don't.

These two are basically just dress up dolls for AUs and ideas we come up with on the fly. There's nothing concrete except for a few basic ideas.

Please note, Glitch originally comes from my Coffeeshop/Detective au Latte Hearts and Mechanical Parts, and is FAR different from the version Cat and I ship with Daisy (we made him a sympathetic villain mafia boss instead of an unsalvageable virus-ridden mafia asshole).

That said, here's the basic run down:

>Wong place at the wrong time, Daisy gets caught in the middle of a "protection fee" collection gone wrong. DJ (Glitch's right-hand man) decides to take her back to base (because he's a softy for tiny, cute women) and they sort of hold her hostage for a while.

>>After finding out Daisy A) Has no family who would pay a ransom to get her back, B) She happens to *enjoy* her time there because she's generally left alone and she likes cleaning up the house and decorating (she may be just a tiny 🤏 bit particular about cleanliness) and C) She genuinely respects them and treats them like they're human, despite that not being the social norm.

>>>Glitch and DJ decide to let her stay (Begrudgingly on Glitch's part) and she basically becomes their reprieve from the harsh world they live in, and eventually they grow attached.

What is with zutara obsession and making the south pole seem less progressive and super sexist so that it seems like zuko is "saving" her? Aside from sokka being sexist, there's 0 evidence, and the fact katara is shocked women can't fight in the North pole and in hamas flashback we see women fighting, it implies the opposite. Also, in traditional inuit tribes jobs were often separated by gender roles anyway, each gender could do the other job but would often only do certain ones. It's just a weird fire nation fantasy they've got

It's part of two big trends they love in fanfics: Cinderella Katara and Prince Zuko saving her from her terrible life, AND the obsession with "the Fire Nation had a point/wasn't so bad actually" (that last one in particular gets really racist really fast).

It's also their desperate attempt to pretend they are the "feminist ship" to justify the neverending harrassment towards anyone who dislikes Zutara for whatever reason - after all, if they are the "feminist ship" OBVIOUSLY the only motive anyone could have to not be into that pairing is that they hate women, and thus they deserve to be treated like shit as "punishment for being sexist."

And like you pointed out, not only there's zero evidence that the Fire Nation was less sexist than Katara's tribe (which was NOT the Northern Water Tribe and actually allowed women to fight - something Zutarians conveniently "misremember"), let alone be this super progressive naton where women have the same rights as men. Hell, considering it was based on Imperial Japan, the idea of it being a "feminist nation" is just laughable.

We see women as prison guards in the Fire Nation, sure, but every single time we see a Fire Nation fleet, air-force, or regular army walking around enemy territory EVERY CHARACTER is male (except for Azula and her friends). Look at the council meetings Zuko went in "The Storm" and "Nightmares And Daydreams" - there are literally no women there... except for his sister, and only in the last one.

Since I mentioned her, let me remind you: Azula is the literal princess and a prodigy, and Mai and Ty Lee are her two high-born friends that also happen to be shockingly more competent than most of the adults we've seen... yet it was only after the humiliating, disastrous defeat in the North Pole that Ozai decided to send his daughter to accomplish the mission everyone else was failing at, and at first her friends were not even supposed to be involved in it at all.

And once again, even after their insane accomplishments in just a few months, only Azula was present in the council meeting to discuss how to deal with the Earth Kingdom, like the other two didn't help her literally the city that was impossible to conquer. To make matters worse, only Zuko's experience in dealing with the people of Earth Kingdom was discussed, and sure he had spent the most time there because of his banishment, but considering the girls literally infiltrated the goddamn goverment and destroyed it from the inside out, you'd think all four of them would be people Ozai and the others would want to listen to, instead of focusing solely on Zuko.

To me, that just screams that being a warrior/strategist is generally not seen as a "woman's role" in the Fire Nation - and while women CAN achieve that kind of status with the right conections and A LOT of impressive accomplishments, they are still the exception to the rule. They can be a back up plan that leads to victory and gain some respect, but they are never the first option.

There's also things like Mai saying her parents would let her do and have whatever she wanted as long as she behaved, or the fact that in the original plans for book 3 Azula was supposed to have an arranged marriage much like Yue, and the obvious fact that Azula's whole life was all about how much she desperately wanted to please her father at all cost - to the point that she's completely emotionally destroyed in the finale when he decides "Sorry, you don't get to actually share the glory of taking down the Fire Nation's biggest enemy. You can have the title of Fire Lord as a consolation prize. But since I'm going to be Phoenix King now, it basically just means that I'm giving you an empty title that means nothing so you'll shut up."

For fuck's sake, we see Ozai spew the most obviously made up bullshit ever with that "I totally am only leaving you behind so because some one needs to protect our nation and I can only trust you, my perfect child, to do that", like that is in anyway the role of someone with Azula's level of ability and not the role of the hundreds of armed men she would eventually banish.

As a final detail, even though Ozai mentions BOTH of his children as potential heirs when he is trying to get his father to give him Iroh's crown, we were told in plenty of descriptions about Azula's coronation as Fire Lord that she would be the FIRST woman to have that title. It is very unlikely that, in all of Fire Nation history, not once has there been a case of a Fire Lord's first child being a girl/only having daughters and no sons, meaning that, at the very least, there's once again a system of women being perfectly acceptable back-up plans, but never the first choice.

Now, compare that to the Southern Water Tribe - literally the only hint of any kind of inequality is the factSokka made some sexist comments that he obviously heard from someone else, and half the time he says that shit with the explicit intention of getting on his younger sister's nerves. That's it. Doesn't sound anywhere as serious as Pakku throwing a tantrum over Aang daring to teach Katara, and deciding "You know what? I'm not gonna teach the Avatar at all just to show how I much I don't like it when women do something I don't want to do. Everyone can just fucking die for all I care" - something we KNOW would never have happened in the South Pole, since we saw Hama and other women fighting Fire Nation raids.

Everything we know points to Katara's tribe being far less sexist than it's sister tribe, and being either on the same page as the Fire Nation when it comes to women's rights OR potentially having been a more egalitarian place before being nearly wipped out of the map.

There's also another aspect to this conversation that Zutara fans often deliberately ignore: even if this infamously imperialist and racist country DID give women the same rights it gives to men, that would only naturally only apply to women of the Fire Nation and surely not to the foreign girl that came from the tribe they commited genocide against. Surely not the girl that saved the Avatar's life, and thus led to their eventual defeat in a war that everyone assumed had already been won.

I'm not saying NO ONE would see Katara as in no way inferior to Fire Nation women, but let's not kid ourselves here and pretend there's any chance of this super racist culture suddenly changing overnight just because the Fire Lord said "you guys have to be cool with other races now."

So yeah, anyone who genuinely tries to tell me "Katara HAS to marry Zuko! It's her one chance for happiness! She would totally be better off in the Fire Nation because they treat women fairly, unlike her awful, backwards tribe of misogynistic savages" can kiss my ass.
