Big plant update
Tumblr media
Not really able to be seen from this angle, but there is already 5 flowers blooming. And a lot more is on the way. We bought this plant when I believe there was no flowers?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of these petunias is gonna bloom with two flowers! And like yeah, sure, most of these has a second bud growing, that particular petunia is gonna bloom with two at once!
Bottom image is one of the newest petunias getting ready to bloom!
Tumblr media
It just looks like dirt and hints of green but these are my Carnations!! They're so small right now. These are those "choice double mixed" which I'm just assuming means random colors. The dwarfs haven't started growing yet.
I didn't take a pic yet, but I think soon I'm gonna need to replant my forget me nots. They're in a tiny tin and are growing, but I want them to have more space. Unfortunately, I believe they're way too tiny for me to do that with.

ETA: I wrote up a guide on clues that a foraging book was written by AI here!
[Original Tweet source here.]
[RANT AHEAD]
Okay, yeah. This is a very, very, very bad idea. I understand that there is a certain flavor of techbro who has ABSOLUTELY zero problem with this because "AI is the future, bro", and we're supposed to be reading their articles on how to use AI for side hustles and all that.
I get that ID apps have played into people's tendency to want quick and easy answers to everything (I'm not totally opposed to apps, but please read about how an app does not a Master Naturalist make.) But nature identification is serious stuff, ESPECIALLY when you are trying to identify whether something is safe to eat, handle, etc. You have to be absolutely, completely, 100000% sure of your ID, and then you ALSO have to absolutely verify that it is safely handled and consumed by humans.
As a foraging instructor, I cannot emphasize this enough. My classes, which are intended for a general audience, are very heavy on identification skills for this very reason. I have had (a small subsection of) students complain that I wasn't just spending 2-3 hours listing off bunches of edible plants and fungi, and honestly? They can complain all they want. I am doing MY due diligence to make very sure that the people who take my classes are prepared to go out and start identifying species and then figure out their edibility or lack thereof.
Because it isn't enough to be able to say "Oh, that's a dandelion, and I think this might be an oyster mushroom." It's also not enough to say "Well, such-and-such app says this is Queen Anne's lace and not poison hemlock." You HAVE to have incredibly keen observational skills. You HAVE to be patient enough to take thorough observations and run them through multiple forms of verification (field guides, websites, apps, other foragers/naturalists) to make sure you have a rock-solid identification. And then you ALSO have to be willing to read through multiple sources (NOT just Wikipedia) to determine whether that species is safely consumed by humans, and if so if it needs to be prepared in a particular way or if there are inedible/toxic parts that need to be removed.
AND--this phenomenon of AI-generated crapola emphasizes the fact that in addition to all of the above, you HAVE to have critical thinking skills when it comes to assessing your sources. Just because something is printed on a page doesn't mean it's true. You need to look at the quality of the information being presented. You need to look at the author's sources. You need to compare what this person is saying to other books and resources out there, and make sure there's a consensus.
You also need to look at the author themselves and make absolutely sure they are a real person. Find their website. Find their bio. Find their social media. Find any other manners in which they interact with the world, ESPECIALLY outside of the internet. Contact them. Ask questions. Don't be a jerk about it, because we're just people, but do at least make sure that a book you're interested in buying is by a real person. I guarantee you those of us who are serious about teaching this stuff and who are internet-savvy are going to make it very easy to find who we are (within reason), what we're doing, and why.
Because the OP in that Tweet is absolutely right--people are going to get seriously ill or dead if they try using AI-generated field guides. We have such a wealth of information, both on paper/pixels and in the brains of active, experienced foragers, that we can easily learn from the mistakes of people in the past who got poisoned, and avoid their fate. But it does mean that you MUST have the will and ability to be impeccably thorough in your research--and when in doubt, throw it out.
My inbox is always open. I'm easier caught via email than here, but I will answer. You can always ask me stuff about foraging, about nature identification, etc. And if there's a foraging instructor/author/etc. with a website, chances are they're also going to be more than willing to answer questions. I am happy to direct you to online groups on Facebook and elsewhere where you have a whole slew of people to compare notes with. I want people's foraging to be SAFE and FUN. And AI-generated books aren't the way to make that happen.

People please… Jinx literally knew Silco and Vander’s history. Y’all acting like she never questioned what led to the events in the cannery (unlike Vi, who just takes it at face value that Silco MUST be evil for what he did and Vander MUST have been an angel who didn’t reap what he sowed)/Silco lied about what transpired between them so he could use her and that’s why Jinx stayed with him.
But no, she’s clearly known the truth for YEARS.
Why is it so hard to believe she’d understand Silco’s motives then? Or here’s a more radical idea…that she actually agrees with him and believes in the cause? She has every reason to want independence from Piltover and the Enforcers’ rule.

Sonic having unexpected bits of secondhand expertise that he gets from his friends:
His coding skills wouldn't last a single second against anyone actually competent but he can hack Shadow's Netflix password every time it changes.
He knows how to brew a perfect cup of tea and also how to bake exactly one (1) cake.
Around the specific latitudes that Angel island tends to float around in he goes looking for a particular kind of edible plant that a certain someone showed him how to identify. He likes to snack on it when he's bored.
He's able to estimate the value of a piece of jewelry based off the quality of the gem. Knows the difference between a 'karat' and a 'carat'.
He can look at bullet holes and have a decent guess at the caliber of the gun that shot them. He could also, in a pinch, fully disassemble a HK45 Tactical pistol and put it back together again.
Fishing. You get the idea.

It would be nice if humanity could reach a point where landscaping like this is not okay. I walk past this area frequently, and they regularly nuke everything with roundup and remove all the detritus. Think of all the arthropods and other wildlife this wasted space could support. I understand having fire buffers around buildings, but this attitude isn’t exclusive to plots close to buildings…
Tumblr media
I also understand many native plants can be more difficult to grow, but California poppies (in the Bay Area) are not one of them. I’m sure other regions have similarly easy to grow species. Even a few plants can make a huge difference.
We as a culture need to stop it with the blasé attitude about the destruction of nature, particularly bugs (ie invertebrates). “Kill it with fire” is a shitty and ignorant way to react to a tiny animal that is merely trying to exist. The vast majority of bugs are not out to get you and are, in fact, terrified of you (rightfully so in many cases).
Would you squish a baby bird? Didn’t think so.

→ Annalyn's POV | Wayne's POV
Steve's dancing with Eddie, twirling his husband as he laughs, the daisy still hang behind his ear. They both still can't believe they didn't recognize each other.
God, he can't believe he actually married that boy from the park. Eddie's his friend, his lover, his person, his everything.
When they finally sit down to take a break, just watching as their family members dance and mingle with each other. El walks to them, bright beam on her smile, her pink dress making her glow like an angel.
She hugs each of them before turning to Steve, her eyes twinkling agains the fairy lights.
"I have something to say." El says, determined look on her face, "Annalyn asked me to tell you that she's proud of you and that she's very happy for the both of you."
Steve stares at her, blinking back tears as his jaw drops open.
"Annalyn? Like Annalyn, Steve's dead aunt?" Eddie asks, making El nod happily.
"She's also saying that she's glad she met Eddie while she was still alive." El continues.
Eddie coughs, choking out a wet laugh, "Yeah. Huh. That's right. I did meet you."
"Is she here right now?" Steve whispers, his grip on Eddie's hand tightening.
"Yes. She said you invited her and to come say hi to me." El says, laughing slightly at the message.
"I did. I did." Steve laughs, "Auntie, I love you. I hope wherever you are, you're happy and safe."
El smiles, "She's hugging you both right now." Steve starts crying, small hiccups escaping him, as Eddie pulls him closer to his chest to comfort him.
"She also says she loves you." El starts laughing, "I cannot say that."
"What? What is it?" Steve perks up.
"Annalyn said that you are a very determined little shi— poop. You did marry the daisy boy."
"Auntie." Steve whines. Eddie physically brightens up, his whole face turning in to a grin, "Ohhhh! Did baby Steve have a crush on baby Eddie?!"
El giggles, "Yes. Annalyn says that after Steve met Eddie, Steve told Annalyn that he will marry that boy."
Eddie melts beside him, giving his cheek a wet kiss, "Awwww sweetheart!"
"Auntie, your embarrassing me now. Go away." Steve says, trying to shoo non-existent air beside him.
"Annalyn said, she'll go mingle with the others. Maybe catch up with Wayne first and then come back to you later." El doesn't wait for them to answer, hopping away like she's holding someone's hand.
"Well, aren't you just the sweetest?" Steve turns to Eddie, as Eddie plucks one of the daisies out of his hair. "So... you wanted to marry me, huh?"
Steve rolls his eyes, "Eds, baby, you're the one that proposed."
Eddie smirks, "And you said yes."
"Of course, I wanted to marry you. I just got married to you today!"
Eddie smiles at him, dimple deep in his chin, "You having a great wedding day, baby?"
Steve turns, watches as his found family dance underneath the twinkling lights, just laughing and smiling, with no danger ahead of any of them. El's at the far end, looking like she's dancing with someone that the naked eyes can't see.
His family is complete.
Steve looks back to Eddie, leaning forward to kiss his husband's lips before saying,
"I am having the best day, my daisy boy."

If there was one thing Nai never thought would happen, it's that he'd have any empathy towards a human. When that happened, the new "it will never happen" thought was that he'd fall in love with them. And when that happened too, it was already too late.
Nai's a complex man with many thoughts stored away in his mind. He's tactful. Nothing happens without having deliberately been thought out.
The Great Fall was mentally his undoing. He believed he was doing the right thing. He believed he was giving not only himself freedom, but his brethren. It didn't matter what stood in his way, he would face it and he would be victorious. And when his actions presented fruitful, there was no turning back.
He did what he set out to do. A chain of events were presented to him and there was no other option. A never-ending battle was presented to him and he was the crux. That never bothered him.
What did bother him was when he extended a hand to Rem, his own mother, she chose them instead of him. Whether or not Nai admitted it, he loved Rem in his own way and having her reject them was the nail in the coffin: if his own mother chose the monsters over her own sons, she was also a monster.
And when Vash chose the monsters immediately after, that was enough. The sacrificial act of saving them was not appreciated. That was proof enough that Vash had been manipulated and was too far gone, at least at that point. In time, Vash would come around. In time, Vash would open his eyes... just like Nai did. It was inevitable.
Nai hid his sorrow, burying it deeper and deeper until it was just a fragment of a memory. He might not have even realized he held that grief.
Whatever lingering feelings he had were a waste of time. The love he held for his brother was what drove him to continue, but other than that, he didn't need these useless human feelings. Was he disappointed Vash didn't immediately side with him? Yes. But it would all be rectified eventually, so why process those emotions at all? Nai would always protect his brother.
But that disappointment in both Rem and Vash's rejection would fester in ways he didn't realize.
The fateful day you two met, these disappointments came to light. It doesn't matter how it happened, or what happened at all. One act of kindness or empathy and Nai was immediately hooked, much to his dismay.
He was starved for some kind of positive reinforcement and he would continue to seek it out whether he realized it or not. He was crippled beneath the weight of your actions and surprisingly... he didn't want it any other way.
He spent a long time denying it. You were a human and therefor you were the enemy. He could kill you if he really wanted to... but he never did.
Eventually, he began feeling... empathy for you, something he never thought were possible. Was it an eye-for-an-eye mentality? Because you showed him kindness, he felt like he needed to do the same? Maybe not to the same extent, but...
Maybe it was the looming threat of your rejection. Nai had cared only for two people in the past and they rejected him. Could he handle being rejected again?
He wouldn't give you a chance to reject him. Ever. You want to live? Done. You want an apology? Begrudgingly, it will happen. You want attention? It will be done. You want... love? ... you can have it.
At first, he just believed you were the exception. All humans are disgusting abominations... except you. All the humans needed to die... except you. It took him a long time to accept that your empathy towards him was what made you human. Your humility towards him is what made you human. Your forgiveness towards him is what made you human. And maybe humanity wasn't... all bad...
Maybe a small part of his ideology was wrong.
Maybe.
Begging him to leave everything behind was excruciating. Asking him to give up everything he had worked for and everything he believed was asking him to give up every part of who he was. You were asking him to tear down a century of growth in the (possible) wrong direction. The humans needed to be punished for their misdeeds and he was the messenger. To deny the messenger the act of delivering justice was, in his mind, cruel.
What convinced him was the conceiving of your child. Neither of you knew if you could conceive until it happened. But when it did, there was no denying that he already betrayed his cause. Plants would always be superior. Plants would always deserve more. And humans were a product of destruction, and deserved just that...
... but the middle ground, this child of both plant and human blood, was such a beautiful sight to behold...
And the thought of killing you or the child was something he could not do.
How do you rid the planet of an entire species save two people? Because if you make the exception, where is the line drawn? Humans were filled with flaws such as hypocrisy, and Nai could not fall to these weaknesses else he become exactly what he despised.
So what do you do when you feel you are forced to give up your life's purpose? You find a new purpose.
And finally, the tale of Millions Knives was over. Gone without a trace. The looming threat of his return would always be present, but people could finally breath a sigh of relief... at least for now.
There wasn't a bone in this man's body that knew how to live a domestic life. When you don't need to eat, you don't cook. When you don't need to sleep, you don't dream. There were many things he felt were expected of him that he could not bring to the table. How do you provide what you have not had provided to you for over a century?
Running away from his problems would never be an easy answer. He was forced to lay down a lot of his pride and ego to be able to fit into this... quaint life that he never wished for but so desperately wanted to keep.
But he can learn. If a mere human could do it, so could he.
Eventually, he got used to lying beside you during the night. Despite not needing it, he would sometimes sleep... but most of the time, he'd lie awake and think many a thought.
Did he regret his actions? That was complicated. What he did was for the plants. For his brother. He would never regret his loyalty. He would never regret his beliefs.
But something would always gnaw at him knowing to hate all humans meant to hate you and his child, and he couldn't bring himself to do that.
He would never be able to take back what he had done, and in truth, he didn't want to. Whether that painted him as a villain or not didn't change his mind. He could never adapt a new line of thinking, not entirely.
You knew this. And he knew you knew this.
But the one thing he didn't know you knew... is in the middle of the night when the whole household was supposed to be sleeping, Nai would sneak out of bed.
Maybe it was a need to feel a connection to something he had lost. Maybe the child called to him in a way you couldn't hear. Something drew him from your side during the dark of night that begged him to hold your child.
And with the infant in his arms, the two would glow in the small nursery. The communication between plants that you could not hear but could see. It coloured the room with a dull blue light and lingered in your mind as a beautiful and comforting scene.
Nai would never tell you he did this. And as your child grew and eventually forgot these kindred moments, he would never tell them either. But the message he was trying to convey would always ring true: he would always protect his family.

god a few of the notes on that post about leather are so
“then just stop wearing leather OR pleather!!! nobody NEEDS leather!!!”
okay, I’ll bite: what are we supposed to make shoes out of?
I don’t want to wear plastic clothing. period. if it’s at all possible to avoid. call me crazy, but I don’t consider destroying habitats on a massive scale via microplastic runoff in water and non-biodegradable plastic waste in landfills “more humane,” to animals OR people. I recognize that a lot of people don’t have the luxury of that choice, because synthetics are often cheaper, and I would never judge those individuals for it. but fortunately, I do, and that’s the choice I’ve made
so that leaves the natural materials that are currently commercially viable. leather and fur are out, and by strict v*gan definitions, so are wool and silk. plant-based fibers it is, then!
I live in Massachusetts, USA. let me just lace up my canvas sneakers to go out in the next February blizzard
and I’m sure people who work dangerous jobs like construction will love the sturdy protection of hemp slip-ons
be v*gan if you want to (censoring to avoid tags); I get that it’s usually coming from a place of compassion even if I don’t agree on the execution. but for gods’ sakes, don’t be this out-of-touch. just like I know that not everyone will agree with my personal decisions on how to live the most ethical life I feel I can, please respect that other people’s realities may look different from yours

I saw this post today and thought about it (I also didn't want to rant on a post that is a year old... so... separate post)
The soul talk is from Conrad in Stampede, if I remember it right, and it is mostly basis for him to justify his eugenist views and his inhumane experimentations.
All plants are sentient and sapient. While they are individuals, they are also existing in a state of psychic linked hivemind, not quite dissimilar to Zazie the Beast (though they are one person with many bodies, while plants are many people with many bodies connected through another dimension).
Plants feel joy, hurt, fear. And humans who work with them seem to be aware of it, as seen in flashbacks in the manga. A plant engineer is shown at a last run and seen praying as the plant is killed. They know and they feel guilt.
Though, does the regular human know it? Or does the general public see them as generic producers? Kinda like people today forget that the bacon they get in the supermarket is from a once living being, a pig, that lived, breathed and oinked. And that disconnect invites greed, dehumanisation of the plants and the overusage of them. That disconnect invites waste, greed and cruelty towards plants.
A big difficulty in the coexistence between humans is -besides the dependency of humanity on plants as producers - that plants and humans cannot directly communicate. A plant cannot just say: No! She cannot decide to not produce. And that puts her in a position that is easily exploited.
Her wellbeing is in the hands of her caretakers. And the actions of those are dependent on their power (Are they independent or can someone pressure them for more food, more materials, more anything?), their education (were they taught by other plant engineers? If not, how do they avoid critical malfunctions killing more plants which worsens the pressure to produce on other plants) and environmental factors (98 put it pretty good. By destroying July without killing anyone, the people needed shelter elsewhere. The refugees put pressure on the system in place, which let to more plants dying and more humans dying as a result. No Man's Land/Gunsmoke is a system barely held in balance, if at all. Even a tiny shift in higher birthrates, a bad sandstorm, a malfunction, can topple everything.)
That's were independent plants like Knives, Vash, Tesla, Chronica and Domina come in. They are born from their sisters, who need their bulbs to live, as beings that can walk the surface and talk like the humans. Additionally to that, they need a caretaker like every baby does. That way, Independent plants are in the role of a bridge between the two species.
Independents are not only able to communicate with humans, they are also able to do the same with their sisters. Sadly… Knives and Vash SUCK at communicating. Finding the remains (are they just remains? That remains to be seen… (In Stampede)) of Tesla, traumatised the boys and their following path, while diverging radically from each other, is not one of peaceful, intertwined living.
Knives is scared as fuck that he will be murdered the same way as Tesla was. While he cares about his brother, this is mostly about himself. Knives does not listen. He does not listen to Vash and he really does not listen to his sisters. Knives does as Knives does and everyone else is in for the ride.
And by stranding humanity onto a planet without any ressources like he did, Knives also made it extremely difficult for humanity to be good. They are as desperate and as vicious as Knives is (thank you @duncanor for pointing that out). Knives put humanity into a situation that makes it easy for him to point at them and say: 'Look, they are all rabid beasts, killing and maiming each other. They need to die faster.'
Vash is grieving and feels guilty. He does listen, he smiles and then keeps on going the same way he was on before. Vash is put in a situation of having to listen to his sisters being overworked and dying, but he also sees humans desperatedly fighting for ressources and trying to live. So he does nothing to change the status quo, only barely patching one grievance to rush to the next one, while trying to find his brother. Because Vash needs everyone to live. His sisters AND humanity for which Rem died. And changing the system could destroy everything. So he focuses on patching things up and stopping his brother.
Tesla is dead, Domina and Chronica are still on Earth. I am sure the latter two would be entirely overwhelmed, too, in Vash' situation. How do you fix that massive ball of mismanagement, when humanity is barely scratching by? Yes, the Independent Plants exist, they are in a unique place to overcome the crack of communication between the species.
But how? No one gave Vash or Knives any instruction in how to do their part in this. We got from one line that the independents went through a similar uprising on earth, too. But we do not know how they overcame it to coexist.
So, NO ONE is in a position to truly fix this situation, since there are not many ressources beyond the plants and there are so many more humans just existing than the planet and plants could provide for. There… there is no answer.
THIS is no trolley problem… If you save the plants, humanity dies, but plants need humanity, too. This is a last ditch effort of two species to not die out. It is their extinction. Many dinosaurs survived the meteor and then died off in the next years, decades due to starvation, thirst or just not finding a mate.
And then there is the last important part. What do the plants want? Knives does only what Knives wants, he has no idea what his sisters want. Humans also have no idea. And Vash… doesn't dare to disturb the status quo, because he wants to keep everyone alive.
From what we can gather in Trimax and interviews, plants like humans and they like producing things. And it is one of the few positive parts of Trimax' ending, plants and humans communicate. The plants share all the good and bad memories of humans with humanity and receive help from humanity. Plants see their future with humanity interlinked. They want humanity to survive, too, together.
