top five industrial structures? (not sure what to call the catagory, electric pylons and lighthouses and such)
Really good question
1. Electrical pylon obviously (silver angel that stands guard over the American landscape, appreciated only from afar, through car windows on road trips. Equally capable of being a messenger and a guardian. Its humbuzz is both a halo and a flaming sword. They’re commonplace and yet seeing one still elicits joy in me, like seeing a crow on your way to the bus stop. It makes sense that it’s there but it still makes you smile when you cross its path. Ultimately benevolent but also entirely unknowable.)
2. Little white American church (serves both a similar purpose to the lighthouse and the control tower. An anchor point for community and a structure that allows for communication with the heavens. Like a battery for spiritual energy. Archetypical enough to feel cartoonish and yet I see them everywhere. Should be viewed as a power plant for faith)
3. Nuclear power plant (Homer Simpson works here, works in tandem with the pylon, the distinct cone structure fascinates me, it’s unlike anything in the world. We tamed the atom and contain it here. Kind of cool. Emblematic of late 20th century Americana)
4. Fish ladder (we became god and redirected rivers, we reshaped the globe in our own image. And yet the ever present electrical pull in the minds of salmon reminds us that there are forces outside of man’s own electrical hubris. Salmon follow a red thread that extends from their birth to their death, and we call this loop the hero’s journey)
5. Water tower (how did we get all that water up there?)
