Question: how do you justify what the darkling did to Genya, Alina and Nikolai? I don’t even mean this to sound rude, but I’m just genuinely curious how you just brush past that when you say the Darkling never did anything he’d have to apologize for 🙃
I'd start with stating that I don't like the word "justify". Google says its meaning is "to show or prove to be right or reasonable", which to me sounds like something that's expected whenever you're about to do something that might offend or hurt anyone. Like pre-made apology you owe people even though you might not have anything to apologize for in the end.
It's really about lack of better words. Czech dictionary translates "justify" as "odůvodnit" or "ospravedlnit", out of which the first one is strictly without that moral baggage. Closer to "give reason".
Aleksander's actions are often perceived out of context, as malicious crimes he committed for his own enjoyment, or whatever suits the antis best, while there are plenty of factors we shouldn't fail to consider.
Ravka- The country he loves, even though it doesn't love him. Rarely peaceful- according to Shadow and Bone, current wars last for over a century. Drained by both its neighbours, split in two for long enough it's pretty unbelievable the West is only planning to secede, poor, with ruling class, who doesn't care and has no reason to.
Grisha- From outright hated to respected, but in constant danger anywhere else, Aleksander manged to carve out a place for them under conditions. The Crown allows Grisha to live right on its backyard (to better keep an eye on), safely train and serve as soldiers or servants of noble houses, as long as they're useful, but... also has no need or intention to take it further. Grisha are glorified, envied serfs in fancy clothes. They're used by monarchy, despised and distrusted by masses, as proved by several little things throughout the first book and instant pogroms once the Fold moves (And don't forget there were no survivors- no true witnesses-, aside from few of the Darkling's people.).
His own lives' experience- Let's be honest- centuries of watching his people- however close- die, drawbacks, betrayals, constantly repeating history... gives one quite a perspective. It's a miracle the Darkling is merely numb and tired, yet somehow hardly unfeeling. Unlike the young heroes he possesses enough self-control not to start begging, crying, screaming... He's lashing out, when he has a reason to believe it won't bite him in the ass, he's petty and hurts others, punishing them for hurting him.
setting- Forget 21st century morality. If we're talking about 19th century-esque world, it wouldn't only have fancy nobles, dashing princes to play pirates privateers and masses of uneducated peasants. The reason people think the way they do is they got there somehow. Ravka still has servitude, for gods' sake! Lives don't matter the way people want them to today! It won't be only about some being rich and some poor, there should be huge differences depending on one's circumstances of birth, bloodlines, wrongs or slights generations old... I'm aware we're suppose to pretend Alina get a pass, because she's "Living Saint", but for example slapping a member of royalty should cost her. Bastard or not, you let it slide once, and next thing you know people are getting ideas and building guillotines.
Now to your question:
Genya is the easiest. She got punished for disobeying direct order, betraying the Darkling for a girl she hardly knew and who was too self-involved to truly act like the friend Genya for some reason suddenly feels her to be.
Aleksander let Genya close enough to be considerably honest around her, at least regarding his intentions with Lantsovs. Dangerous thing to do for a man in his position (and although I have my theories, this reply is no place for them). That's why he made it personal. She didn't only abandon their cause, she hurt him, so he took what she valued most about herself, fitting his revenge into her expectable punishment.
He could've had her whipped. To death even. Instead he chose more personal approach.
Alina's the messiest, because way too many feelings got involved and Aleksander's shit in handling those. His only lasting relationship is his abusive mother, others tend to die on him. Alina's a personification of a dream. Someone to keep him company for the rest of eternity. A companion he longed for for so long, he's not able to handle the bitter truth. I don't think he ever considered his "One and Only Equal" might not be interested in his goals and while he might rationally understand Alina's so much younger, he quickly loses his patience and decides to speed up her development because her young self is interfering with his general plans.
Now, while younger Aleksander might have been more passionate, he was never allowed the luxury of recklessness or even childhood, as a consequence of which he has no idea how to handle hormonal teenagers. Alina's worldview is incredibly narrow and she has several mental mechanisms to prevent her from changing that, while Aleksander's living in constant paranoia, possibility of fight or flight 24/7. They're incompatible the way they are- Alina unwilling to change, Aleksander too rigid and lacking the luxury of choice- yet in each other's way too much to merely split up. The Darkling needs the Sun Summoner as a tool and a symbol, and as long as he breathes, Alina won't have a chance to regain her beloved anonymity.
What he did to her?
The Collar was his hand forced. Unreliable deserter possessing the power he needed to ensure ceasefire.
What else is there that couldn't be explain by simple "They're on opposite sides of a conflict."?
The only other moment that comes to my mind is him burning down the orphanage, one of my favourites. The situation is thus:
The Darkling occupies the Throne (Yay!), but he lacks wide support, numbers and resources, therefore he's forced to rule by fear, which is no way to go, when he wants to build future, where Grisha are accepted. Who does have the love of masses, is an undeserving "Saint" and rogue prince, starving his own people, while being cheered on for it, because he's thwarting the Darkling at the same time. I'll ignore Nikolai for now. So, how do you catch a single person, who could be hiding anywhere, with help from anyone, while you can count on no one? You make them come to you. You make them show themselves under circumstances you control.
Alina already fled slaughter of others three times, one she even directly caused. She might pretend to be a do-gooder, but she truly cares only about herself and her otkazat'sya past. Threatening Malyen already proved to be fruitful, but that one's out of Aleksander's reach, so he tries the next best thing. Destroying her "home". There's also poetry in it- he lost his mother for Alina, it's only fair she'd lose hers. As a symbol of the past Alina's so stubbornly clinging to, there's even some chance it WILL really hurt her, which is certainly plus for his vengeful self.
Eventually it proves to be ruthless, simple and utterly brilliant. Alina falls for his threat and meets him in the Fold.
It's a beautiful example of sacrificing a few (The Grisha teachers probably stayed with the children for their sake, and residents of the orphanage were also just doing their jobs as far as we know.) to end civil war and bring the other side to heel. Ravka wasn't able to handle two-front war, opening third one was insanity and I'm genuinely surprised the country didn't fall (or that West didn't use it to finally free itself from East). With Alina's power under control the Darkling could've attempted "Peace or the Fold" again, perhaps even succeed this time.
And then we have Nikolai.
Second-born Lantsov thwarting his plans, proposing "his" Sun Summoner, loved by masses and army alike because unlike Aleksander, he's otkazat'sya. Goals? Same. Positions? Incomparable. Willingness to give everything? Yes for both.
In better world, they could've been allies. One easily accepted, the other highly experienced. But the story doesn't want that, so Nikolai is serious contender and an obstacle in Aleksander's way to "Fine, I'll do it myself.". He needs to be gone. Killing him would be easiest and most permanent, but Kolya fucked up, when he made it personal.
Tricking the Darkling, shooting him, proposing to his "not"gf, evacuating royal family AND Baghra, starving his forces once Darkles sits on the throne... taking away Nikolai's most valuable quality, while keeping him conscious enough to comprehend it is the way to go!
There's also a POV that says showing your essence down your rival's throat to irrecoverably change him might be seen as a romantic gesture or outright foreplay, but I happen to be a Fannibal, so I'm aware the majority of Grishaverse fans might find my ideas of romance a bit harder to digest (pun absolutely intended).
To sum up: Most of the Darkling's actions corresponds with his position of 19th century-esque war general and revolutionary attempting Coup to save his bankrupt country, while hated by masses and lacking resources. Plus a drop of clever, petty vindictiveness.
(And whole bucket of bad writing, because there are things that just DON'T MAKE SENSE- both regarding worldbuilding and characterisation.)

TGH/TDR vs WoT season 2: what's in and what's out pt 2 (worldbuilding)
This time we're doing concepts and settings introduced in TGH/TDR (or introduced in EoTW but not in S1 of the show).
Introduced in EoTW but not S1 Caemlyn Andoran politics inc. Tigraine's disappearance
Tar Valon was substituted for Caemlyn in S1 but I believe it has been confirmed as a setting for S3. In terms of information viewers need to remember, Andoran politics only *really* start to matter when we kick off the Succession plotline & I expect will be scattered throughout future seasons until we get to the main event in S5-6 or so. If Slayer is in S3 (I think this has also been suggested) then we could start to get some infodumps about the whole Tigraine & Luc disappearance drama there. (Side-note: I think show-only people are going to find it hilarious if Rand has an uncle Luke (Luc).)
Introduced in TGH Cairhien Daes Dae'mar Illuminators The Choedan Kal (not named) Ogier politics and culture The search for the Car'a'carn Seanchan/the Hailene The secret of the a'dam/sul'dam The Black Ajah The Accepted test
Still missing from the show but first introduced in TGH: Ogier politics and culture(differences between steddings), the existence and location of the Choedan Kal, and the Illuminators. The Ogier stuff may or may not EVER be relevant. The Choedan Kal can & should be introduced to up the stakes from Callandor when it proves too dangerous, although may get easter egg mentions prior, quite possibly as a Lanfear back-up plan. The Illuminators - again only necessary when gunpowder and its potential for weapons start to become relevant. They could be introduced in Tanchico if the plot goes there or as refugees from the Seanchan. (NB: I think show-only people are also going to be REALLY sideswiped by that whole plot, gunpowder weapons are so rare in the popular perception of epic fantasy. It's going to make WoT really stand out.) Another note: in the show the fact that the a'dam can be used on sul'dam remains a secret from the Seanchan and was not presented as an empire-shattering discovery, and the lore has changed so sul'dam are just very weak in the Power. I think there's a chance that in the show it becomes something known but suppressed in Seanchan rather than a genuine/complete rediscovery. Given how long channelers live that would check out; the books never make anything of it but Alivia is old enough that when she was born there were still a few free channelers in Seanchan. The 'Consolidation' was not a short victorious war but a multi-century period.
Introduced in TDR Tear (the city/Stone), Illian, and Ghealdan Darkhounds Wolfbrothers losing themselves Wolves and the Dream/prophetic wolf dreams Wide-scale ta'veren effects Tel'aran'rhiod Forsaken controlling nations (including specifically Illian, Tear, and Andor) Grey Men Callandor/the fall of the Stone Mat's luck Set-up for the Tower Coup Egwene as a Dreamer/Egwene's prophetic Dreams Balefire Fireworks as weapons
As with characters, there's a lot of worldbuilding from TDR that hasn't come into play yet! I think this is mostly for pacing reasons. On the other hand, we actually got a lot of Tel'aran'rhiod in S2 which aligns with TDR, a book where characters spend about half their time having prophetic dreams (or so it feels like).
Mat's luck and Egwene's Dreaming abilities - these are solid/obvious S3 arcs for these characters that they didn't have time for in S2. No question we'll see them next season, I think, although Mat's luck might have more of a slow-burn introduction than just suddenly working.
The Forsaken - have only just all been released! We'll certainly see them taking over nations in the next season or two.
Darkhounds, Wolfbrother lore, Callandor, fireworks as weapons - I think this has all been held back for pacing. Famously Perrin's plot needs to be spread out to give him stuff to do in later seasons. He might not get prophetic dreams though since it's a bit of a repeat of Egwene's Dreaming and never goes anywhere much.
Similarly, it's a Big Deal when Rand gets Callandor and then it...stays where it is for five books, that's not good TV pacing. I suspect he will pick it up just in time to try using it and fail against the Seanchan. And we don't need to think about fireworks as weapons until Mat is in a place to take advantage of the possibilities.
Balefire, widespread ta'veren effects, Grey Men - these are all things which pose the question 'why aren't they being used all the time' once they're introduced, and the latter two will be quite hard to effectively and efficiently do in a visual medium. We'll get balefire eventually but at a much higher power level for our characters, and the other two we might never get at all.
Tear and Illian - genuinely no idea when we'll get to these cities! Illian we may never visit as not a lot happens there that has to happen *there*. We'll go to Tear (the city proper) at SOME point but...depends on a lot of things exactly when.

Forest kingdom
Tumblr media
The ambitious and enormous Forest kingdom was the first of the land kingdoms to be formed, when a manticore known as Emory Campos self proclaimed himself as the king and began organizing his followers into a society, he went on to drive off the pillbug species from the forest territory, as they refused to cooperate with his plans of building a kingdom. He would claim ownership of every territory in the land, and as he and his followers began setting up towns around the middle area Emory named his domain Forest kingdom and created a calendar to keep track of time after its official creation.
Due to being a master of magic King Emory lived for over 800 years and lead the kingdom through many changes and improvements over the years, but nothing good lasts forever, the last centuries of Emory's life were filled with blow after blow as massive parts of the territory separated from the Forest kingdom and became their own societies, currently known as the Mountain and Desert kingdoms. This made Emory's reputation as a ruler go downhill, as many of his former supporters and family members started seeing him as too soft and a shadow of his former self.
The last nail on the coffin was when he willingly landed a part of the territory to the Ocean kingdom refugees at shore instead of fighting for the land as his family wanted. This led to his reputation becoming even worse and eventually the family planned a coup against Emory to take him away from power, which ended up in his death and the ascension of Theodore Yarrow as the next master of dawn magic. The rulers after Emory strived to "make the kingdom great again" and take the forest out of this dark age they were currently in.
Nowadays the kingdom is known for its immense traditionalism and urge to follow said traditions under the belief that they exist for a reason, and if we ignore tradition society will fall into chaos. This leads the forest to be quite an oppressive place to live, as certain species and couples tend to suffer a lot of prejudice from their peers, societal expectations are also very present in the forest. They're also known for always seeking power, which was what led to the unfortunate creation of "The oddity" after an experiment made by the forest failed and the beast escaped containment.
This kingdom's native species are humans, manticores, satyrs, centaurs, vampires, werewolves and forest critters. Manticores being the ascended ones of the forest, they're known for being huge powerful beasts with immense strength and a poisonous sting. Manticores compose the entirety of the kingdom's royal guard, they're seen as mighty beasts and well loved by the society they live in. Aside from protecting the kingdom, manticores are also the ones who are periodically sent on expedition into the depths of the forest to gather power crystals which will be used to power energy through the towns.
The Forest kingdom's magic system is known as Dawn magic and taught mainly in the Ancient ruins of Dawn magic. This magic is heavily connected to the nature that envelops their kingdoms, its users are able to create many kinds of magically enhanced plants that can be used in all sorts of things. These powers are divided into combat based Dawn magic, which can be used in fights and fused with preexisting weapons depending on the proficiency level of the user, and healing based Dawn magic, which uses magical powers to heal others at the price of one's own health. Healing based Dawn magic tends to be mixed with potion making, as they're both heavily tied to medicine.
The Forest kingdom's current ruler is King Omar the third Campos and their Master of magic is Leonel Eberson.
Passing of the throne
Being a very traditionalist kingdom, the rulers of the Forest kingdom have always been part of the Campos family's bloodline. The throne is passed from father to oldest child and when it comes time to get a partner, a selection of members of the kingdom's high society will be called to meet the future ruler and perhaps get chosen to become their partner in the future.
This method of choosing their rulers essentially prevents habitants from lower social classes from ever getting close to the throne, some rulers of the past have gone as far as desown and complete erase certain family members from the family history once they decided to go agaisnt the family's wishes and marry someone deemed unworthy.
Choosing to marry someone outside of the choosing pool will lead to the person, and their future offsprings, losing their rights as a member of the royal family. The position of future ruler is then passed to someone else in the family.
Towns and important locations
-Greenbourn
Capital of the Forest kingdom, home of the royal family and the mighty manticore guard. The biggest and most populated city of the kingdom, commonly used to host big events or as a meeting ground for Citizen whenever the king has important announcements to make.
-Ancient ruins of Dawn magic
Ruins containing the knowledge about the forest magic type, discovered by King Emory when he was exploring the region many centuries back which led to him becoming the first one learn the magic and consequently become its first master.
Nowadays many new building have been added to the ruins, always making sure to original structure intact. The are has become an enormous college/school of sorts where citizens from all over the kingdom come to learn magic from wise and experienced teachers on the field, one of them being the curent master of magic, Leonel Eberson, who lives in the ruins and strived to be patient and kind to every student he meets there.
-The greatest land market
Biggest and most diverse business center of the land, having a shop or stand in there is in itself a sign of a successful business. It's not uncommon for buyers to come all the way from different kingdoms just to experience the market by itself as it has become a touristic attraction in its own right.
-Howling peaks and Wolfden village
A couple decades ago, King Omar passed a law that obligated werewolves to take a potion to revert the effect of their howling gene, as he considered them a disease of sorts. A movement agaisnt the king's cruelty was quickly created and for years the Mighty howlers organized protest and riots again Omar, eventually succeeding in making him back down and abolish the obligatory potion law.
During the conflict, many werewolves had their own hidden settlements known amongst them as wolfdens. After everything was over, the two biggest settlement were turned into straight up towns and named by Werewolves who were part of the movement.
-Paradise plateau
A chill valley in between the mountains and forest, home to many resorts and hot springs. It's also the place where a lot of manticores from the Royal guard tend to move to after retirement as it provides a quiet relaxed place to live after a lifetime of serving the kingdom.
-Flowerfield meadown
A beautiful town named after the enormous flower field around the region, formed due to simple flower growth spells casted over the years by Dawn magic apprentice as they trained. Many of the town's habitants live there due to it's proximity to the Ancient ruins, it also possesess the Forest kingdom's only harbour for shipments via sea.
-Soothing grasslands
Large rural area with a large quantity of farms and agriculture work in general, They're the kingdom's biggest supplier of anything of the sort and the goods produced there are even sold or traded with other kingdoms.

This chapter more than any other has remained the most consistent through rewrites and drafts. Takes you out of the house where Spayar is a doting big brother and loved oldest child into the actual work he does to plan a coup to kill the rest of the royal family.
If you'd like to be pinged for updates drop me a line. Info links are all at the bottom including AO3.

The Zealous Servant | 2 | South Garden
====+====
South Garden was a bustling neighborhood where you could get just about anything you wanted. Unlike the gridded streets of Bellringer which had been meticulously planned by the Craftsmans' Guild centuries ago South Garden was an older part of the city where roads had just appeared between buildings and then everyone had crammed into spaces next to each other. Colorful awnings dotted the front of the buildings' fronts often overlapping each other and the street casting the roads into brilliant colors in the dull gray light of the drizzle. Unlike in Bellringer where houses had enough spaces for gardens the homes of South Garden were so close the walls touched and some buildings even shared them. They seemed to hang over the streets but unlike some neighborhoods Spayar never felt like the buildings would fall in on you. You wanted to experience that The Cradle was just on the other side of the river or even more crowded Downriver further away still. The upper windows all held flower boxes and it wasn't uncommon for long trailing flowering plants to drape down low over the road. Traffic in South Garden was regulated to foot traffic or small petty taxis. No coaches allowed so it was a safe neighborhood to walk about freely. Which was good as according to Senior it was somehow getting more dangerous than usual to be on the streets in Bellringer as the number of run-overs by coaches had increased in the last few months.
Spayar just followed after Calli with the shopping. He'd made a big deal about it earlier but it was easier to just let her do it. She knew what they needed. He'd handed over the list and his wallet and let her buy up the processed goods and gather the raw. He stood behind Calli boredly as she was looking over some already shelled nuts. He was just looking around, catching no one's attention in particular, listening to side talk. He was honestly looking for a place to sit for a bit and let the right people notice him.
He was in the middle of a yawn when he saw someone across the street staring at him. Calli was bartering with the stall owner over the price of almonds they were selling and completely oblivious. They were a man, nondescript in appearance wearing the fashion from a few years ago, and he was just looking at Spayar in surprise. Then he made a hand sign at Spayar in thieves cant. He was so out of practice in this after two years in the Arm. Even worse than Dirnine. But after a second he remembered the corresponding hand sign. The man walked away with a nod. Spayar looked away as Calli finished her transaction.
"Five silver for a pound of badly shelled almonds, what a scam," Calli complained after they were out of earshot of the nut seller.
"Bad year?" Spayar asked.
"Its the principle of the thing," she huffed. "Last year it was three silver."
"Is he the only nut seller?"
"That doesn't just sell flour, yes," she was annoyed as they walked the street to their next destination. "Everyone's double processing their raw it seems. It's infuriating."
"The fact that he's selling them just shelled is almost illegal so you can take solace in that at least," Spayar said idly. Selling raw food products or living animals strictly for consumption was illegal in the Alliance. The government paid all farmers and ranchers for their products on maturity and it was distributed by the farmers themselves. If you wanted to sell food stuffs you had to process it in some way, cook it, make it into flour or cheese or do something to change it from its natural state.
"He didn't even roast them!" Calli cried and Spayar chuckled. "Amma wanted me to pick up some spices from her favorite shop so just wait out here. I'll be a bit and see if I can't pry some cinnamon or cardamom from them."
"Good luck," Spayar said and Calli went into a cheerfully lit shop. He glanced inside and saw it was run by some Dirinians as well if Calli's greeting in Dirnine was anything to go off of.
Well knowing Dirinians that would be a while. He went and found a bench to sit on and sighed like he was weary. The bench was damp but not wet and his jacket covered the back of his thighs. He kicked his legs out and got comfortable, reminding himself where the nearest post office was. He needed to get this letter out of Theo.
He glanced over when a man, a different man from before, sat next to him. Spayar recognized him instantly, pale skinned with a shock of blond hair he dyed black but was always showing at the roots. He was a muscly type with a surprisingly honest face. "Jimon," he said in greeting, he was in a thin rain coat, no hood or hat.
"Spayar," he replied back. "Cannin nearly shit himself he was so shocked to see you back out and about." Spayar chuckled. "Showed up at Lonni's acting all crazy. We all had to tell him to shut the blazes up. Wasn't like you died or anything."
"That'd be a neat trick if I had, though," Spayar smirked. "You know Cannin doesn't know what to do around pretty guys," and that made Jimon give a loud well meant laugh. "Didn't even recognize him. Finally got a hair cut."
"Yeah. His lady made him get it shaved off when he came home with lice last month." Spayar grimaced in sympathy.
"So," Spayar started off lowly but casually. He didn't necessary want their conversation overheard. Not that it was probably anything but old news but better safe than sorry. "What's the beat?"
"Depends," Jimon held out his hand palm up on top of his thigh.
"Don't insult me, Jimon," Spayar rolled his eyes.
"Just checking. You were gone two years. Things changed."
"I can't imagine they changed that much-
"Jackkerty's dead."
Spayar needed a moment to process that. "He's what?" That was... not the worst thing in the world but far from the best. Shit.
"Dead. Got got. There's a new master of the Tithing Court now," Jimon said with absolute grim seriousness Spayar couldn't recall seeing in him in a long time even before he'd left.
"I see. Who's the mark?"
"Calls themselves the Pale Cross. Foreigner best we can tell. They've got a retched accent if they aren't," Jimon's face pinched.
"Jackkerty let a foreigner get the better of him? Really?"
"Yeah. We were surprised too. Lonni said they all went in one day for their usual meeting and he was gone and Pale Cross was in his place. Didn't believe at first. Found his body in his house in Middleton later that day."
"Well shit," Spayar said softly. He wasn't really torn up about Jackkerty's death. Not really. Jackkerty had been a fool. But he knew the rules and was easily manipulated. Exactly how the Lord of the Tithing Court should be here in Assarus. "And how's he running the place?"
"They," Spayar noted the emphasis there as Jimon spoke, "don't get it. They aren't from here, acting like this is any other place. Collects more often and higher amounts. They already sent Black after a few of the street runners who didn't pay up, had him take some fingers. It's got everyone nervous and acting stupid. Doing risky things to meet pay day. The Strong Arm's starting to get annoyed and is looking at us."
That was serious. The royals and their spymaster were aware of the Tithing Court and tolerated it for the most part as it acted as a slight extension of their spy network. Petty thieves and people who ran illegal gambling rings heard all sorts of news and gossip a noted spy had more trouble sussing out. Petty thievery or an illegal gambling den wasn't punishable beyond a fine and some time in the city's jail. Never long. Few months. But if petty thievery wasn't making the tithing for this new Lord then they'd do bigger jobs. Start actual robbery, steal things of higher value. If the higher ranks did it it was expected but if the entire Court was suddenly hurting for money to pay their new Lord. It certainly would draw the Strong Arm's attention-- while technically all the guard in the city were part of the Strong Arm it was really only used for those who served on the palace grounds and Fey's Shadow where all the nobles kept their homes. If the Strong Arm got involved the royals got involved and they had a no tolerance policy. There'd be no raids or arrests. They'd just raze all of the Cradle and parts of Middleton to the ground to send a very clear message that this foolish 'guild' was no longer going to be tolerated.
"Someone's told them right?" Spayar asked.
"Of course! Not like they care. I think they think this is like wherever they came from and the guard has no idea where we are and we're some weird secret," Jimon grimaced. "They just want money."
"Ah. Grubber."
"Aye," Jimon spat on the ground to show how much he cared for that.
"And no one's killed them? Seems like a lot of bad without a lot of good."
"We've tried. They're a warlock of some sort. Ones who've tried end up dead instead. It's real annoying actually."
Made sense. Weren't many warlocks in the Tithing Court or who did assassinations. If you could use magic there was way better money to be made doing reasonable magic for people. That and the Adoshade tended to put a stop to any freelance blades in the dark. Spayar had asked one during his time why that was. LiSen, who never joked at all to begin with, had just said it was 'bad for their image'.
"So no one's talked any sense into them?"
"Not that they take seriously," Jimon sighed. As he did a woman walked by them, stopped, and did a double take, peering down at them from under her umbrella. "Not now Lenorr I'm talking his ear off," Jimon tried to wave her off.
"Well it must be awful then since Jimon is a real bore!" Lenorr cried and Spayar grunted when she helped herself to his lap. Lenorr, like most of the Court, wasn't much to look at, straight brown hair, round cheeks, wide hips and a narrow waist. She had pretty eyes he guessed. He wasn't much one for figuring out what made girls pretty unless someone told him directly. He'd consider it a character flaw if he actually gave a shit.
"Hello Lenorr, fancy seeing you here," Spayar said, slightly strained from her in his lap. Yeah sure, use your boss like part of the bench. Perfect, he thought.
"What are you telling him Jimon?"
"New boss."
"Oh, they're awful," Lenorr bemoaned.
"Bad for business I've been told," Spayar said.
"Terrible!"
"Woman will you pipe down," Jimon scolded her. Lenorr just rolled her eyes.
"So I take it I need a new introduction?" Spayar asked to keep the conversation going.
"Good luck with that."
"The court stays with them all the time," Jimon said.
"Why?"
"In case they do something stupid like kill someone like they killed some kid a few weeks ago because he didn't bring any money three times in a row and they considered that unacceptable. Slit the kid's throat and had him tossed into the Meltong. Guards went crazy about that. They were banging on the doors of every known crook or bend in the city seeing if we knew anything," he said it lowly but with great annoyance. "And of course we all said we didn't know anything. Now the entire court just stays there to stop them from doing it again. Stealing is one thing but we aren't murderers."
Spayar rubbed his eyes. "Great. So everyone's there all the time?"
"Well..." Lenorr started, "not Tassa. But no one's seen her in a while."
That did interest him. Von said he hadn't seen Tassa and she wasn't in the court? He'd have to pay her a visit.
"I see. Anything else happen while I was gone?" Spayar asked. He was quite over hearing them complain about their new boss honestly. The Pale Cross didn't worry him. They were shit. Everyone knew Lord of Tithing was a paper title for a weak crime scene just to keep the kleptomaniacs in line. He also knew the court were all soft handed thugs who were too afraid of death to tell the Pale Cross how it was. Spayar wasn't like that and he couldn't have some foreigner ruining his good thing with the thief's guild.
"When'd you get back?" Jimon asked.
"This morning," Spayar shrugged.
"So then you don't know what's been going on?"
"About?"
"Last year the thaw totally flooded the Mire. Most of it got torn down because of it, rot getting into the buildings. It hasn't been rebuilt properly yet."
"It's horrible down there," Lenorr agreed. "We've been getting a lot of new hands from there. There's nothing for them. Asuras isn't fixing it. Then this year that son of hers moved into the Winter Palace and she's been too afraid to come up and see the situation herself," she said scornfully. "Lots of people desperate to get out of the Mire but don't have a place to go home to so they come to us to get enough money for a place to stay."
"Can't get a job if you don't have an address," Spayar said softly. They both nodded slowly.
"Been a weird year and a half too. Too much water along the river basin and then not enough water between here and the White Foot Hills."
"My sister said prices for food products have gone up a bit," Spayar said remembering Calli's complaining of more than just the almonds.
"Yeah."
"And you're lucky to find raw most places," Lenorr said. "It gets grabbed up by processors so fast. Then before you can get that they sell to someone else who can afford a higher mark up and then they sell a secondary process for four times the amount."
"How much is bread?" Spayar asked.
"Two silver," Jimon said gravely.
Spayar nearly choked. "Silver? For a loaf of bread? That better be the best damn bread I've ever had!"
The two thieves laughed. "It's affecting different neighborhoods differently. Craft guild has a strong arm in Bellringer from what I hear. They go around, rounding up raw and single possessed food staples and give it out to guild members first and community members second." That explained why Spayar hadn't noticed the lack and even still could get rice. His father was a Master smith in the guild. His family wouldn't go without so long as the craftsman's guild was still operating in the city. "Fey's Shadow and Upriver of course are noticing nothing."
"Heard it was bad in D'linger for a bit at first before the university took over," Lenorr said thoughtfully. "Now anyone who's part of the university has access to their food stores, raw and processed, free of charge."
"Yeah. Probably best not to piss off the university warlocks by upcharging them for bread," Spayar said.
"I even heard some butcher in Middleton was trying to sell raw," Jimon said.
"No way."
"Unconfirmed rumor," he added quickly. "If it happened the Strong Arm certainly straightened it out quickly."
"Yeah I'd guess so. Anything else fun and exciting I should be aware of?"
"It's Tallasala's naming day soon. She's planning a big party despite Teldin's appearance," Lenorr said. "Thirty-seventh of Neyjarra." So less than two months away with this being the last few days of J'dorr and J'dorr was the shortest month of the year.
"Mmm, great. Well I'll see about getting a meeting with the Pale Cross and we can set them straight on some things."
"I certainly hope so."
"It's... worrying," Lenorr agreed.
"I can't leave you alone for even a minute can I?" the familiar voice of his sister cried as she came out of the spice shop.
"Pleasure," Jimon shook Spayar's hand where Spayar slipped him a gold. Then he stood up, dipped his head to Calli and wandered off, hands in his pockets, wandering back out into the multi colored light of the awning covered street.
"Ah yes, the only woman in your life, huh Spayar?" Lenorr teased him and very nearly shoving her tits in his face. He rolled his eyes making her give him a fox smirk.
"Well she doesn't crush my thighs so yes," he said and that made Lenorr laugh. She gave him a kiss on the cheek and as she got up he slipped her a gold as well. "Ta ta," and she went on her way.
"You've been back home less than five hours and I already find you covered in flirts," Calli huffed, arms cross. She looked very much like Relora then.
"What can I say? I'm very charming," Spayar asked with a smirk. Calli was unaffected and unamused.
"Well I wish you'd teach me that instead of arithmetic. Far more useful than math ever will be."
Spayar chuckled and got to his feet grabbing up the shopping in one arm. He looped the other arm around her as they walked. "Trust me, math is important. But also you just need to seem smarter than you are but not like you know you're smarter than you are, smarter than they are," he did impart some wisdom onto her. Which surprised her by the look on her face and honestly surprised him too. "Shouldn't be too hard. You're very clever and I know you got a smart mind behind that big forehead of yours," and he poked her in the middle of her high forehead.
She swatted at him. "Ahg! Horrid!" she cried, swinging her basket at him. Spayar laughed and jumped back, hands up. "To think I missed you while you were gone," she huffed angrily. But he knew she was just flustered.
"So what's next on the list?" Spayar asked. "Anything heavy for you to torture me with?"
"Yes," she said, still annoyed with him.
They ended up making a few more stops and Calli did find some heavy things to carry, a bag of sausage and cured meat and another with jars of jam and produce preserves. Despite the cooling air it was humid because of the rain and quite miserable honestly. Once the rain settled the humidity would go away but for now he was left to build up a bit of sweat in his rain jacket. "You think amma will be upset if we go home without everything on the list?" Calli asked as they stood at the other side of the big South Garden market.
"I don't even know what she looks like upset so that's doubtful," Spayar said. "What are we missing?"
"She wanted me to see if I could find some raw out here but..." she bit her lip.
"Probably not happening?" Spayar gathered.
"Unless you can make goat appear out of nowhere?"
"I'm a warlock but not that kind of magic," he said and that made her laugh.
"Well then I guess not."
"You could ask nicely," he said.
She shoved him annoyance. "That doesn't work. Let's get home before it starts raining properly."
"We need to stop at the post office. I have a letter to mail." Calli made an agreeable noise and they headed for the closest post office a few streets over.

It's about a reluctant disaster space found family running from people out to throw two Terran-human ten-year-olds with powers from an extinct human species at their collective galactic problem.
🌟⭐🌟SYNOPSIS🌟⭐🌟
One thousand children prophesied to save a galaxy embroiled in war are taken from Earth at the turn of the 21st century. The children are scattered throughout Alliance worlds to hide them from the terrifying, unseen antagonistic force that would destroy them, the keth.
This story follows the frightening and fantastical adventures of two of those children - Will and Terra - who are genetically altered to possess a strange power for a plan to end the war.
Yune Darrak - a lone spaceship pilot who ekes out a living as a salvager, bounty hunter, and treasure hunter, and Selka Kelnaris - a disillusioned, empathic, Ai Hiri bounty hunter - accidentally rescue them from a Regent secret lab while on a bounty hunt. They travel to a remote agrarian planet where Yune will hand the kids over to Selka once he gets her ship back from the planet's leader, so he can get his life back. A simple plan spirals into a deep, confusing mess involving a mysterious blue light known as the Source Field, a political coup, and more questions about the kids and Yune himself as all four are inadvertently caught up in the middle of a battle they never wanted to fight.

also the complicated interpersonal dynamics are so interesting sdfgd what was the darkling's reaction/thought process when the tsar stated that his son was to wed Alina? does the royal court suspect anything going on between alina and aleksander? bro is NOT being subtle 😭. he's doing this shit right in front of everyone's salad-
Re: this fic
I talked about both points a little bit in a previous ask. I was initially considering having that scene where he’s informed of it actually from his POV, but I liked the emphasis on how he told it to Alina and how she recounts it to Nikolai.
For reference, this is what she says:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think he’s being pretty honest about what actually happened (gasp).
The way I picture the actual conversation going, I think the Darkling and a couple advisors, and the Apparat (who’s getting way too annoyingly ubiquitous) are trying to brief the Tsar on things he does not care about and get him to okay particular things that suit them etc. The Tsar gets impatient and shoos everyone off but singles the Darkling out like *you* stay. Side note, I think it’s really funny that he has no like natural sounding title or name to be called by a superior. The Tsar is obviously not going to call him “moi soverenyi” so… I can’t think of any alternative that isn’t mildly insulting??
Anyway the Darkling is fully braced for a very annoying time, and sure enough the Tsar opens with like how disappointing the long awaited sun summoner has been, and the lack of results. And how disappointing he has been. None of this is quite eyebrow raising yet, just white noise. The Tsar could have a particularly nice nap and suddenly decide that the Darkling is his best friend. He’s generally mercurial so the finer points of his mood don’t super matter to him. But then he gets into how Alina wouldn’t deserve an engagement to Vasily. And that is a record scratch moment lmao. The Darkling internally:
Tumblr media
He’s of course already jumped two steps ahead, and assumes that the conclusion of opening with this, means that the Tsar intends Alina to marry Vasily despite all these caveats. Which imo says something about him, and it also says something about the Tsar that he means it very literally lmao.
Anyway it’s too absurd for the Darkling to feel like insulted about it in the moment. It’s more just bewildering and fucking crazy. He also just does not take the Tsar at all seriously, coup plans or no coup plans. He thinks it’s just as likely that he’ll change his mind the next day. (This is hm too much arrogance on his part tbh, I don’t think that’s actually plausible)
Then the Tsar’s finally like okay so all this is why she’s going to marry Nikolai instead. Which is itself I think hysterical to him that all this preamble about Vasily wasn’t even important. I do think that’s the point where he is starts to think strategically about the engagement though, both as something that might actually be happening, and that could be very advantageous.
But with the realization that maybe this isn’t just drunk rambling also comes the annoyance that the Tsar is very much encroaching on Grisha affairs, and also just Alina generally.
This isn’t in the text but I think there’s something of a power struggle happening where the Darkling tells the Tsar that the Apparat is too opportunistic and oversteps, while the Apparat says the exact same thing about him. The Apparat was more successful in the last round, so the Tsar’s more annoyed with the Darkling and wants to remind him who he answers to. That he can just make arbitrary choices like this, and also marrying Alina into his family does somewhat wrest her away from him as a pawn. (My arbitrary answer to “why was the Darkling planning a coup now, when he could have done so at literally any point in time in the centuries of Lantsov rule?” general is just that the Apparat was stirring things up. Even if they ended up working together by the end)
And the Darkling is very aware of all of this and will be more mad about it the longer he thinks about it lol.
As for what the court thinks, it varies to an extent. I think his reputation for keeping very separate from everyone else, and the fact that he’s ageless and immortal, has been doing a lot of heavy lifting, up until the start of the fic at least. And before all the drama began, he had been pretty careful to keep things secret (even if it was more motivated by keeping Alina at arms length than by actually caring about no one knowing). But yeah he is uh… not being that subtle anymore.
I think generally like everyone can tell that there’s some conflict happening between him and Alina.
Here’s a snippet from the next chapter actually
Tumblr media
So yeah, the existence of drama is very very obvious. But the question of like what they’re fighting over or the exact nature of their dynamic is pretty open. I think he’s kind of been thought of as her de facto guardian almost? So people aren’t quite jumping to the conclusion that they’re having an affair. But they can only be so messy and dramatic before more people catch on.

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — The world remembers Gen. Augusto Pinochet as the dictator whose regime tortured, killed and disappeared 3,065 people in the name of fighting communism.
But as Chile marks the 50th anniversary next Monday of the coup that brought Pinochet to power for almost 17 years, many in the country don’t see it as a dark day. Amid a weak economy and a surge in violent crime, recent polls show that many Chileans don’t think human rights are as much of a priority.
They are grappling with what they see as Pinochet’s complicated legacy at a time when a large number have told pollsters they are losing faith in democracy.
“Before, there wasn’t as much wickedness as there is now,” said Ana María Román Vera, 62, who sells lottery tickets. “You didn’t see as many robberies.”
A July poll by the Center for Public Studies, a Chile-based foundation, found that 66% of respondents agreed with the statement that rather than worry about the rights of individuals, the country needs a firm government. That is more than double the 32% who agreed with the statement fewer than four years ago.
In Chile, 9/11 was a landmark before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the U.S. because it was the date of the 1973 coup in the South American country. That significance, though, has been changing. Polling shows more than one-third of Chileans today justify the military takeover of a democratically elected government that went on to violate human rights, murder opponents, cancel elections, restrict the media, suppress labor unions and disband political parties.
“There should be an overwhelming majority of Chileans who denounce the dictatorship and the military coup and acknowledge that the military destroyed democracy,” said Marta Lagos, director of the regional polling firm Latinobarómetro and founder of pollster Mori Chile. “That would be the normal situation in a normal country. But that’s not the case.”
Late last month, leftist President Gabriel Boric unveiled what will effectively be the first state-sponsored plan to try to locate the approximately 1,162 victims of the dictatorship who remain missing.
Yet even as Boric’s government and human rights organizations plan events to mark the coup anniversary, many in Chile don’t appear to see the ousting of a democratically elected leader as wrong.
A poll earlier this year by Lagos’ firm found that 36% of Chileans believe the military “freed” Chile “from Marxism” when it deposed leftist democratically elected president Salvador Allende, who came into power in 1970 and killed himself the day of the coup. The poll found that 42% said the coup destroyed democracy, the lowest number since 1995.
Pinochet led the coup at a time when the country was mired in an economic crisis that included scarcity of food and galloping inflation that reached an annual rate of 600%. When the military took over it implemented a free-market economy that suddenly meant those with means could go on a consumerism binge even as the poverty rate soared.
Retired accountant Sergio Gómez Martínez, 72, said that “fortunately, Augusto Pinochet led the coup” against Allende’s socialist government. He argued that his economic wellbeing improved under the right-wing military government “because there was order, employment, and the countryside and industries began to produce.”
Repression was unleashed on opponents on the day of the coup. On the days that followed, Congress was shut down and political parties were dissolved as the military junta snatched control of all aspects of society. Those opposed to the regime were regularly imprisoned and tortured and hundreds of thousands were forced into exile.
Gómez said the human rights violations of the Pinochet years “could have been avoided” but they do not seem to be at the centerpiece of his memory of the years of Pinochet’s rule, when by some estimates around 200,000 citizens went into exile for political reasons and some 28,000 opponents of the regime were imprisoned and tortured.
He’s hardly alone. Almost four in 10 Chileans think Pinochet’s 1973-1990 rule modernized the country and 20% see the dictator as one of the best rulers of 20th-century Chile, according to the Mori survey.
A regional survey by Latinobarómetro this year found that only 48% of Latin Americans think that democracy is preferable to any other form of government, which marks a 15-point drop from 2010.
Across Latin America, strongmen like El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele are gaining popularity. Bukele has gained an ardent following due to his severe crackdown on gangs despite a record of human rights abuses.
Boric, meanwhile, has seen a sharp plunge in his approval ratings ever since he swept into power in March 2022 as Chile’s youngest-ever president at 36 following widespread student-led street protests that put on display how the economic inequalities borne from the dictatorship lived on. Citizens broadly rejected an effort last year to replace the country’s dictatorship-era constitution with what would have been one of the world’s most progressive magna cartas, and later went on to elect conservatives to write the next draft of the document.
Efrén Cortés Tapia, a 60-year-old painter, said his most vivid memories about the dictatorship years was not just the “repression” but also “not being able to listen to the music of forbidden folklore groups.” For him, the dictatorship led to “limits in the cultural development” as well as “fear and dread.”
Even as Chilean society grapples with its mixed feelings over the dictatorship, more is being learned about the repression of the years through the courts.
There are around 1,300 active criminal cases for human rights violations during the dictatorship and some 150 are serving sentences in Punta Peuco Prison, a facility exclusively set aside for those guilty of dictatorship-era crimes.
Boric’s administration is also looking abroad for answers, pushing the United States to declassify documents that can help shed light on the role Washington played in the coup it supported.
In late August, the CIA declassified portions of the President’s Daily Briefs related to Chile from Sept. 8, 1973 and Sept. 11, 1973 that confirm then-President Richard Nixon was briefed on the possibility of a coup.
During a recent visit to Chile, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat from New York, said it was “very important … to acknowledge and reflect on the role of the United States” in the coup.
Pinochet remained in power until 1990, stepping down after a majority of Chileans voted against military rule in 1988. But he did not disappear and immediately became commander-in-chief of the Army until 1998 and later became a lifelong senator, a position he created for himself. He resigned in 2002 and died in 2006 without ever being convicted in Chilean courts, although he was detained for 17 months in London on the order of a Spanish judge.
“Chileans got used to living with Pinochet,” Lagos said. “Pinochet, I believe, is the only dictator in Western contemporary history, during this century and the last century, who, 50 years after his coup, is still appreciated by 30 or 40% of a country’s population.”

WIP Wednesday
I am again thinking about Harman the blacksmith (and am in the revision stage for this next section. Exciting!!!) I love him very much, but he's also very frustrating:
"I still think you're making a mountain out of a molehill." Harman shrugged. "At the very least, the Grey Wardens would've found that tainted old god thing if it'd been in Ferelden this whole time."
"The Grey Wardens were exiled from Ferelden in 7:5 Storm," Duncan said. "Almost two centuries ago."
"Oh." Harman looked up from his mug. "What for?"
Duncan sighed. "They participated in a coup against the king of Ferelden of that time."
"Hah!" Harman slapped his thigh. "Brazen bastards. I like that."
"Harman, please!" Duncan set his stew aside with an expression halfway between frustrated and pleading. "This is no laughing matter! I'm telling you this because it is of utmost importance that you make plans to get yourself and your family to safety in case the king's army is defeated at Ostagar."
"Ostagar, Ostagar." Harman shook his head. "Listen, lad, I'm going to tell you the same thing I've been telling the people here. You're running yourself ragged on suppositions. When the Orlesians had occupied Ferelden, it seemed impossible for king Maric and teryn Loghain to pull through with their rebellion. But they did it! After years and years of occupation, they kicked those fancy poodles out. And now they're at Ostagar—well, not king Maric, but his son. They have it covered, lad. Have a bit of faith."
Faith indeed.
Tagged by @oxygenforthewicked and @yukichouji — thank you so much for allowing me to share this!! I'm busily typing away at this section and it's coming along nicely. I still don't know what will happen to Harman. One can only hope that he will see sense
Tagging you both back for whenever it pleases you, as well as @wild-houseplant @icy-warden @badartxd @siriskulksnerding @bumblerhizal and @fade-and-loathing-in-thedas . Have a lovely day, all of you!

These Silent Woods by Kimi Cunningham Grant: In this suspense novel, Cooper and his young daughter Finch have been living an isolated life in the Appalachians for eight years, haunted by the ghosts of their past.
Dead Silence by S.A. Barne: In this novel, a spaceship crew boards a luxury spaceship that was reported lost 20 years ago, only to find the nightmare hasn’t ended. Goodreads describes this book as “Titanic meets The Shining,” and I feel like that’s enough to convince anyone to read this.
Adams 101 series: Adams 101 is a collection of 42 books that are a beginner’s guide to a variety of topics such as psychology, genetics, history, philosophy, etc.
1984 by George Orwell: A classic dystopian novel that follows Winston Smith, who works for the Ministry of Truth and is starting to question the system he works for.
The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson: Ted Severson meets Lily Kintner on a long flight to Boston and has an instant connection. While drinking, Ted confesses his marriage is failing and his wife is cheating. Ted jokes about killing his wife for what she’s done, and Lily makes an offer to help. Back in Boston, their twisted bond intensifies as they plot the death of his wife, but Lily is keeping some secrets.
Mary Jane by Jessica Anya Blau: A coming-of-age novel in 1970’s Baltimore that follows 14-year-old Mary Jane. She comes from a strict household where she cooks, cleans, goes to church, reads, and listens to Broadway show tunes with her family. During the summer, she takes a job as a nanny for a psychiatrist who is helping a rock star get clean. While working for the family, Mary Jane’s horizons are broadened and is thrown into a world of sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll.
The Selection by Kiera Cass: In this novel, 35 girls are given the chance to leave their hardships behind and compete to become the wife of Prince Maxon. America Singer is chosen, but she is reluctant to go because she just wants to be with her secret love, Aspen. Everything changes when she meets Prince Maxon. This is a series, and all the books are on Kindle Unlimited.
My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell: As allegations are made against the teacher Vanessa was involved with when she was 15, she is struggling to accept that she was sexually abused. Check trigger warnings before reading.
The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty: My absolute favorite series. Nahri is a con woman in 18th-century Egypt who doesn’t believe in magic. When she accidentally summons a djinn during a fake ceremony, she is swept away into a magical world where she is forced to face the reality that magic is real.
The Stationery Shop by Marjan Kamali: The night before Roya and Bahman’s marriage, chaos ensues as a coup d’etat takes place. Roya searches everywhere for Bahman but didn’t find him. 60 years have passed and Roya has finally found Bahman and can ask the questions that have weighed heavy on her heart.
Every Last Secret A.R. Torre: I love a good domestic thriller. Cat Winthorpe has it all. The perfect husband, a big home, and popularity. I am curious however. Does your nation have serfdom? Do common peasants have little to no rights and their status passed to their children? Do only those of higher class and of superior fire bending get the most educated positions? Do the sons and daughters of lets say a doctor have the option of choosing a different path?
Because there is a tragic tale I would like to tell you. Depending on your point of view you could say it was foolish or heroic. Or perhaps both.
It happened two centuries ago. In Russia's capital city of St. Petersburg. Back when Russia was an Empire and controlled more territory than now. It took place a decade after Russia and her allies defeated the French Empire. After the victory, some army officers who had been exposed to European Liberalism thought that Russia too can become less autocratic and that power can be shared amongst the people. Most of Russia's allied countries were Constitutional meaning that even the common folk are given more freedoms. And serfdom have been abolished. Some of those army officers even dreamed of adapting a Federal Democratic system like the United States did and even believed that Russia can thrive without an Emperor. So together they formed secret societies and in time gathered more supporters. However, when the current Russian Emperor died, it was far too early for the army officers as they wanted to take their manifesto to the emperor himself to being change. There was further confusion as to who would succeed him. As some thought it was his eldest son who would become the new ruler and as a result swore their loyalty to him. But when asked if he could rule, he got cold feet and refused thinking he would be assassinated. So his younger brother took his place and declared himself the new emperor of Russia. The rebel army officers however didn't want him on the throne as they saw him as another martinet oppose to any form of liberalism. So, they launched a coup d'etat in the capital and marched on the city center while recruiting more to their cause by saying that the new emperor was in fact trying to overthrow his older brother from the throne. So the new soldiers they had followed them thinking they were stopping a coup when in fact they were aiding one. The new Russian Emperor however caught wind of their plans and ordered that all troops present in the city as well as the Senate to swear their loyalty to him. Soon the city was divided between Loyalist Troops and Rebel Troops who called themselves the Decembrists as their rebellion took place on December 14. But there was a critical flaw in the Decembrists plans. Some of the main ringleaders were not present as some suddenly lost their nerve to their cowardice or were reluctant to spill the blood of their own soldiers and people on their own soil. While others didn't show up at all or had given up hope in the revolt once they heard that the Russian Senate had sworn their loyalty to the new emperor. The remaining rebels that were present held their own but were poorly led as the ringleaders were not there to command them. Standing motionless in the cold winter, they could only watch as they slowly got outnumbered by Loyalist Troops. 9000 vs 3000 to be exact. After hours have passed, the Russian Emperor decides to end the standoff once and for all. So he orders three cannons brought to bear and fire on the Decembrists. At first they fired warning shots but the next volley of Grapeshot decimates the tightly packed rebels. Dozens go down with each shot until in a last act of desperation, the rebels break rank and reform on top of a frozen river. In an attempt to storm the city's armory. But the cannons were brought once more. This time firing on the ice to shatter it and cause hundreds to drown in the freezing water. Any survivors run for their lives.
So ends the liberal dream of Russia and a dream for the end of serfdom.
Were things a little different then perhaps they would have succeeded and had they succeeded maybe Russia might be different today. At least in theory.
OOC: I am sorry if this was a mouthful to read but I thought you would be interested in some amazing history.
Hm... we did have serfs, but, not that many of them and those few were serfs for reasons, whereas our common peasantry is relatively free and we've not even a caste system. If a peasant is gifted enough as a firebender, this one might become a venerable military officer. Also, it's not so uncommon when provincial peasant families gather resources to educate their children, so they could get higher in social hierarchy. And Zuzu made life even better for the lower class, being a populist he is...
That failed revolution you told me about... was itself a product of regime's weakness, and even brutally destroying them wasn't a sign of Empire's true strength. I think if it was timed properly and hidden for more, Decembrists could succeed. But again, this shows those were not too good as strategists, because there's a golden rule: don't play fair, strike when you are sure you've already won. As for us in Fire Nation, we always knew the art of war. No blood was spilled when I conquered Ba Sing Se, Air Nomads were eradicated before they could gather a real army and the final onslaught was calculated to be unstoppable, thanks to Sozin's comet. Joke on us, we both miscalculated, me and father(but mostly blame him), but still at least we failed to something we couldn't predict. And now, as kemurikage, I'm doing my best to show the world what the real revolution is, using my experience with care.
OOC: why yes, that's quite interesting period of history indeed =)

Time to rant about my oc Marble Cake Cookie and Affogato because they make me so *vague gesture of emotion* ( Here is his appearance for reference<33 )
Tumblr media
These two make me so mentally ill okay lets go
OKAY so basically the entire gist of it is that Affogato and Marble Cake used to be friends(ish) before they drifted apart and now it’s more strained than before but they can still attempt to be somewhat friendly to each other
But that’s the boring short version let’s get into why they make me anguish on a regular basis ^-^
Rant Copy pasted from Discord :)
“It’s the kind of thing where they used to be on semi-good terms but due to their own faults as characters they doomed any chance of genuine friendship that had between each other and now even though they should hate each other they can’t help but care for the people that they both used to be
Affogato pushed away everyone so that he could fully devote himself to his goal and originally bugging Marble was just supposed to push him away and then he’d move onto the next person to annoy but when Marble like didn’t care he just kept doing it until he began to care about what Marble said in response which is AWFUL because he’d never actually act on good will aside from very minor things like letting Marble slide even though he probably knew his plan with the excuse of “He’s good at his job” instead of admitting any real emotions towards the one person who didn’t hate him
Not like Marble Cake is completely free of guilt too mind you. His main fault was that he just can’t express his emotions easily so even though he KNEW he cared about Affogato and that he was kind of going down a slippery slope he didn’t do anything to stop it because he feels like he’s incapable of helping people due to his own issue of expressing emotions. He doesn’t mind Affogato’s presence at all even though he’s very annoying on occasion and he’ll complain about him a lot. Marble buries his emotions like Affogato and despite caring for how Affogato used to be he still doesn’t voice that to anyone else and hides it under a mask of uncaring hatred to anyone else. The only time he lets his care for Affogato slip through are when he talks to him one on one and even then it’s almost unnoticeable. That and even though he pieced together that Affogato was going to do something to try and change the Citadel’s laws I think he refused to acknowledge the possibility of a coup/anything really bad until it happened. Affogato didn’t give information to him but Marble didn’t seek it out, and actively refused to look Affogato’s downward spiral in the face until he had become something so different than what he used to be
They care about each other but both bury their emotions and never let it slip through but both of them KNOW on some level that they care for each other. They’re never going to admit it and dance around it for centuries but both were the first genuine friendship the other had whether they want to admit it or not and both are still holding onto the possibility of what if their flaws were just slightly lessened and they actually showed they cared about each other instead of pretending they don’t and hiding those emotions and assuming things. They know it could’ve worked out better and that they both messed it up but they still pretend that it’s like back then when they talk to each other. Marble Cake pretends the king isn’t probably dead ( context this rant is about an rp set during episode 13/14 ) and Affogato pretends that all of his crimes never happened. It’s fragile and awful and their idea of friendship can only exist if they ignore everything that happened with Affogato but they both still hold onto that ideal even though realistically it can never happen anymore unless Affogato’s crimes can disappear and he tries to change as a person. And like,, would Affogato try to become a better person just for Marble? After running away at the end of ep 14 does Affogato ever try and have a change of heart?? Because Marble has duties in the citadel and Affogato isn’t welcome back there under any circumstances so if they ever met again it would be months later.”
And like theoretically they could mend their friendship if Affogato worked on himself but the thing is Marble Cake is so much happier with the friends he has now than he ever was with Affogato. And that thought terrifies him. Because how do you feel? How do you feel when the first friend you ever made after having no one to care for for all of your life drifts away from you due to both of you being unable to admit you care for each other? How does one feel when your first ever friend who you still reminisce on the good times you had with them does horrible things? How does it feel knowing that you should’ve done something to stop them while you could.
Anyways bai bai I just needed to ramble about them I was going to melt into a puddle pf nothingness if I didn’t ^-^

"Whatever is down there, below Prime? It doesn't want to be found. Obviously. I've seen the aftermath of what happens to those unlucky enough to be caught beneath the capital. It's not a lot to see, but leaves a lot to the imagination, even if you don't have a good one.
"It makes me wonder who they were, who misses them. What's going to happen to me if... when... whatever calls the catacombs it home tires of my visits. No one will miss me, not anymore. Maybe he would only think my disappearance a nuisance. Not like his....
"When the coup happened... no even before then, light had been shed on some cult and it's schemes, and it's matron apparently executed and taken care of. Head severed, the body left wriggling in its own gore. I wonder if it slithered down there, though. I wish I had paid more attention back then. There's whispers of cult practices, but also of magic that is.... it creates false life. A behemoth timeless soldier, warriors that die on the field, only to rise again, still not alive. They go, the battle is won, but no one returns. Is it call connected? Does Noxus bury all it's secrets?
"That's why I started venturing down there, to begin with. His dissapearence, it... Whatever the answer is it has to be down there. It isn’t above ground. Short of going though every single home and squalor in this place, I have searched everywhere! I continued to look when everyone one else gave up. Gave up on him. The greatest assassin in the world, and he just suddenly vanishes? How could no one else care...
...
"Sewers and back alley walls have entrances to these tunnels the most often. But manors and the Immortal Bastion.... Maybe some secret passages lead back to the surface there, where less rebuilding has happened over the centuries. Maybe those passages are my next lead. I only hope that whatever finds me before I find it down there, does away with me quickly. I don't plan on dying, but that's sure as hell better than... an apparent alternative."

AU 004 : 'FINAL FANTASY XVI'
Tag: everything new is old again [ff16 au]
Setting: the Final Fantasy XVI universe
Culture: the 'Fallen' (Lufenians); influenced by other present cultures
Age: looks about mid-30s; technically a little over 1500 years old
Locations: currently wanders; raised on Lufenia's largest airborne city (near the center of what is now Storm in Valisthea); spent centuries in a cryopod, deep in the ruins that became Cid's Hideaway
Occupations: currently a mercenary / vagabond; formerly an experimental soldier of Lufenia
Languages: Lufenian [similar to IRL Latin], Valisthean / common tongue
Altered Backstory: Grown from the egg and sperm of unknown donors - which were chosen for their alacrity with magic - he was assigned the name Jack before being 'born', then given the surname 'Garland' after the laboratory he was grown in. He was raised with few peers around him, only coming to know some of his fellow experimental children (including Jed, Ash, Neon, and Sophia) later, when they had lessons together. He attached to them fast, though he often had difficulty showing it. He was given preferential treatment by his tutors and keepers, which he chafed against. He'd sometimes run away, trying to find a hidden way out of the facility. During one such attempt, he met Astos, another experimental child who was deemed a 'failure' for reasons neither of them understood. Jack befriended Astos as well, and would share some of the secret hiding spots he'd found in his explorations. His other friends did learn of this eventually, but kept his secret. As he grew older, his strongest magic manifested clearly: by channeling his own aether into another through touch at the right frequency, he could transform any living thing into blood-red crystals, inside and out. He had to hone his control of it mostly in secret, as it scared his keepers; they strove to focus on teaching him other magicks instead. Still, they bore no qualms about training him for battle, and using his power upon their enemies. This sudden change, the exposure to more of the world and its issues (several caused by Lufenia), the continued poorer treatment of his friends, the disregard their 'commanders' had for them as people... it all piled anger upon anger. Covertly, he and his friends began planning a coup. It would be dangerous, but worth the risk. It failed. Just barely, but still. Astos led Jack and the others to a cryo-chamber, shutting each of them in one...but there wasn't one left for Astos. Despite Jack's objections, Astos refused to share a pod, instead focusing on altering the pods' controls so they couldn't be shut down. The last thing Jack saw past the frost and fog was the facility's guards surrounding Astos. When he woke, he was underground. The power siphon of his cryopod had failed at last. He tumbled out of the open door into a dusty cavern strewn with wreckage of what had once been Lufenia's proudest floating city. At first, he could remember nothing. As he warmed up and began climbing toward what he hoped was an exit, he began to remember more - his name, those of his friends, and where he was from. He found open air at last, among rubble and other debris, as well as several dead bodies. Glimpsing one person still barely alive, he rushed to ask them what had happened... only to unwittingly use his particular brand of magic on them. As more memories crashed into his horrified mind, he recalled what had happened before he'd gone into cryosleep. Jack spent the next several days searching the area for any traces of his friends - but only found 2 of the other cryopods, both crushed and broken. When grief finally abated enough for him to move, he realized he'd have to leave the area to find any food or water. He wandered northwest until he came upon a village, readily selling most of his Lufenian garb for food money. He drifted for a while, using magic to defend himself from creature attacks and from fellow humans who claimed his abilities made him some kind of slave called a 'Bearer'. In all his mulling, he reached an aching conclusion: Astos had intended for him to live, for all of them to live, beyond the fall of Lufenia. The loss of his other friends was even more reason to honor that wish. He began taking on odd jobs where he could, getting a new outfit for himself as well as a sword and shield. The more he traveled and learned about this world, the more he got a sense of how much time had passed since his failed coup. He also began hearing whispers of someone called 'Cid', whose comrades were rebelling against this absurd system of slavery in place. Though he hasn't yet made contact with them, he is intrigued...

Blackburn is a town in Lancashire, England. It lies on the River Darwen and next to the Ribble Valley and has around 110,000 inhabitants. In the 19th century Blackburn was one of five towns that made up a huge industrial district known as "the North West".
The most famous product from this area was cotton textiles but there were also many other industries such as coal mining and iron working that helped develop Blackburn into a thriving town. Over time though these industries declined and today many people commute out of Blackburn for work because there aren't enough jobs locally anymore - although there are still some factories left open too!

There is also a driving school that operates from the area, aptly named Abbey driver training.
