What other photos does Aki take besides crime scene photos?📷
His favorite is obviously crime-related photography - it matches so well with his daredevil personality. But obviously, the guy’s got to make a living! He is known as a freelancer - so his job is based on short-term contracts and varies depending on the contract.
Canonly Akihito has been seening doing wedding photography - at least at Takato’s wedding. Which i thought i might add because it seems unlike him do something like that 🤭🤭
I think he also must do political-related photography - the first episode was about him catching a diet member, a politician, doing something shady. There is also an early episode, where Akihito was supposed to interview a politician. But a senior photographer at his magazine takes over his assignment and Aki’s left being the bag boy. They go to that politician's office, or his private house or something, and they get kinda brushed aside and they have to wait in the waiting room for hours. Meanwhile, Asami shows up at the same offices, and he’s immediately shown in to see the politician. Akihito was so mad during that episode 🤭
And I am just remembering that during that crossover episode with Sensei’s other BL when aki goes to Kyoto with those high schoolers. Those kids' fathers were politicians, and Aki knew all about them. I think it's implied he knows about them because of his job. Later too, those high schools break into private rooms in a hotel - thinking their dads are there but it's some other politician. Akihito comes and smooths things over, by more or less threatening that he’s a journalist - and isn't it interesting that this politician is meeting with a construction company (aka they were doing something shady) Aki was quite smart in that episode- he saw right away that he was acutally witnessing corruption.
He’s been shown doing various celebrity-related photography. The stalker case he worked on, and meeting and working with Ai who is a Japanese idol. There was another small scene of him taking a photograph of a celebrity who was on trial for something, and Akihito got a snap of him looking smug after he left the trial. In the episode where Akihito gets those chocolate aphrodisiacs, he says that he was going to that drug dealer because a celebrity was seen going there - so that case while ended up being criminal-related was celebrity news.
He also seems to do studio photography as well, aka working in photography with models. Probably for certain ad campaigns or something. That fireworks episode - he was late to see the fireworks with asami because a model he was working with was refusing to the shot and was being difficult. The episode of Aki’s birthday where he gets a new suit - all starts with him doing some kind of photo shot with Ai and her friends, who invite him to something where he needs a suit.
Overall, for his work, he seems to be mostly interested in any kind of news photography. I have always HC Akihito as the type of photographer that is less interested in the artistic aspect of photography —- and more about how his photographs tell the truth, or have political statements, or spread information. Though he does seem to sometimes take photographs for the art's sake of it - like when he sees a beautiful scene in front of him, I feel he would get the urge to take a picture of it. Like when they were in Bali and he was seen on the beach looking as if he was framing a photograph, or of course in the most recent episode when he and Asami are acting like a tourist in Italy and he’s taking pictures of everything.

Scrublands: Award-winning ‘ripping page-turner’ becomes the latest crime thriller shot in Victoria
Tumblr media
The adaptation of the novel Scrublands into a crime series is the second Stan original after Bali 2002. Photo: Stan
Ever since award-winning Australian crime writer Chris Hammer published his 2018 thriller Scrublands, television networks and production studios worked furiously to get their hands on the rights to bring the story to life.
Canberra-based Hammer, a former political journalist with just two non-fiction books under his belt, couldn’t believe it when he landed a book deal with Allen & Unwin to publish his debut fiction novel.
Shortly after, he sold the international and TV rights.
“I was laughing and crying, it was just unbelievable,” he told The Guardian at the time.
Fast forward to 2023, and Scrublands – an Easy Tiger production co-commissioned by Australian streamer Stan and the Nine Network, in association with VicScreen – is now filming across Victoria.
Easy Tiger founder Ian Collie and its chief executive Rob Gibson issued a joint statement, saying: “From the moment we opened Chris Hammer’s ripping page-turner, we knew Scrublands was destined to be a must-watch crime series”.
“[It] will be an unmissable TV event for rusted-on Chris Hammer fans and everyone else alike.”
Hammer, too, can’t wait to see it, telling his 2000 Instagram followers he’s thrilled with the cast, the director and just about anyone involved in the series.
“Can’t wait,” he wrote on Tuesday.
instagram
What’s it about?
Scrublands was an instant bestseller in 2018, topping the Australian fiction charts and shortlisted for Best Debut Fiction at the Indie Book Awards.
It was also shortlisted for Best General Fiction at the Australian Book Industry Awards and won the UK Crime Writers’ Association John Creasey Debut Dagger Award.
The story is set against the backdrop of the New South Wales Riverina, in an isolated country town called Riversend, where a charismatic and dedicated young priest (Jay Ryan) calmly opens fire on his congregation, killing five parishioners.
One year later, Hammer’s main character, investigative journalist Martin Scarsden (Luke Arnold) arrives in town to write what should be a simple feature story on the anniversary of the tragedy.
“But when Martin’s instincts kick in and he digs beneath the surface, the previously accepted narrative begins to fall apart and he finds himself in a life-and-death race to uncover the truth,” according to the Stan synopsis.
Turns out there’s a love triangle, fraud, organised crime and cover-ups, all sub-plots worthy of a series.
Prepare to be ‘dazzled’
Although we’re yet to discover how the novel has been adapted to the television series by scriptwriters Felicity Packard (lead writer, and she’s penned Ep 1), Kelsey Munro and Jock Serong, one book reviewer said it was a first-rate crime mystery who was “dazzled” by Hammer throughout the book.
“There is a sense of imminence to Scrublands, particularly in its recognition of drought and the plight of small towns,” Amanda Barrett wrote.
“This one sure bowled me over right from the hooking premise and opening sequence.
“Scrublands will floor you.
Although it’s a work of fiction, she said “there is so much truth to Hammer’s writing and his depiction of the events that take place in Riversend”.
“This is a fastidious novel that works to build a complete picture of what is happening across many country towns, across all states and territories in Australia.
“Riversend is simply a euphemism for so many rural locales in Australia that are grappling with the impact of drought, a decline in services and a rise in crime.”
As a result, she said, the book came across as an authentic tale, tapping into issues that strike at the heart of rural townships.
Tumblr media
Hard work starts for the cast at the table readings. Photo: Stan
Table readings of the adaptation with the lead cast of Arnold (Black Sails, Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story of INXS), Bella Heathcote (C*A*U*G*H*T, Relic, Pieces of Her) and Jay Ryan (It: Chapter Two, Top of the Lake) have been completed as cast hit the road to various locations across the state.
Nine’s director of television Michael Healy says “joining forces with the teams at Stan and Easy Tiger on Scrublands has realised an ambition we have had since Chris Hammer’s novel was published in 2018″.
He says they’re confident it will turn into must-watch television, suitable for a global audience.
VicScreen boss Caroline Pitcher reveals more than 500 Victorians will be employed throughout the series, “adding to the state’s pipeline of local productions”.
Scrublands is the second co-commissioned production between Nine and Stan following Bali 2002.

Stupid Things (Good Outcomes) || JJ Maybank || Prologue
Tumblr media
All things considered, Los Angeles wasn’t a bad place to end up when you’re freshly twenty three. Sure, it’s no Pelican, North Carolina, but JJ Maybank likes well enough.
Words: 1,982
Pairings: JJ Maybank x OFC (Mariella “Mari” Diaz); mentioned Eddie Diaz x Evan “Buck” Buckley.
Warnings: mentions of drowning, sparknotes version of OBX as told by JJ Maybank. Eddie gets called a tonto. Mentions of Eddie being shot
Also on ao3
All things considered, Los Angeles wasn’t a bad place to be when you’re freshly twenty three. It was no Pelican, North Carolina, but JJ Maybank never expected he’d ever actually leave the damn island. Except, you know, for the time he was stuck on an uninhabited island with his friends for six weeks or the time he’d flown to South America in a cargo plane of weed, but neither of those things were so bad when he thought about them.
The studio apartment he rented in LA was expensive, but he had his share of El Dorado and Royal Merchant gold to help pay for that, and when you spent the majority of your high school days couch surfing because your one living parent was too drunk to pay the bills and he skipped town when you were seventeen, you learned quickly to not take up too much space. He liked the vibe of Los Angeles. The surf was decent, he worked as a bartender, and he’d even made a couple friends in his time there.
The surf was decent, the weather was nicer than North Carolina, and that day, a Saturday in May, JJ found himself sitting on a beach soaking up the warm sun while he sipped the beer he’d swiped from one of his friends that had joined him while he texted the Pogues back home.
Kie was telling him all about her most recent trip to Bali with her girlfriend, Avery. John B was giving him an update on the latest house he was flipping while also giving him updates on Sarah’s pregnancy and sending the most adorable photo of his two year old goddaughter, Scout, popsicle mouth and all as she grinned. He couldn’t help but smile at the photo, saving it to make it his lockscreen later.
He was replying to Pope about his plans to fly home for a few days in June for Father’s Day, planning a barbecue at the Routledge household to celebrate Bobby Heyward who had been both his and John B’s father figure after his own dad skipped town and Big John had died when he heard it. It was a mother, yelling at a girl no more than eight years old to come closer to shore because she was getting too far out.
He watched for several moments before he realized what he was seeing. The girl was swimming like she was attempting to get closer to shore but she was struggling and getting farther out. Fuck. He knew immediately what was happening, wasting no time standing up and ripping his shirt off before tossing his sunglasses and phone on the towel he’d been sitting on.
Getting to the girl wasn’t an issue, but he could tell she was exhausted and had inhaled an unknown amount of water in her panicked state. One arm wrapped around her tightly while he swam like hell to get them both out of there. The girl was unconscious by the time his feet were back in the sand and he went into action before looking at the panicked crowd that had gathered.
“Fuck, someone call 9-1-1!” He yelled before finding the moms eyes. “What’s her name?”
“Clara”
“Okay.” He tried to smile through his own panic. He continued to provide chest compressions and rescue breaths for what felt like a lifetime. His arms ached, he could hear the sirens approaching as he kept going, telling the girl to just hang in there. Finally, he could see paramedics rushing towards them, the mother of the girl telling them that her name was Clara Logan and she was eight years old. Before the woman could kneel down and take over there was a gasp from the girl, then coughing as she started to expel the water in her lungs.
He quickly helped stabilize her neck as they moved her to her side so she wouldn’t re-aspirate on the water before he let the medics take over. As he stood there, he couldn’t help but feel ten years old again. It was a feeling that he quickly pushed down as the medics worked quickly, stabilizing her and getting her on a gurney before one of the other firefighters stopped and looked at him.
“What’s your name, sir?” He asked.
JJ froze, looking at him before clearing his throat. “Uh, JJ. JJ Maybank, sir.”
“Well, JJ.” He started, sticking his hand out for JJ to shake. “I’m Captain Nash. Your quick thinking saved that little girl's life today.”
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
“Hey you’re the guy from the beach today, right?”
The voice brought JJ out his thoughts. The scene from that afternoon had been replaying in his head since he’d gotten home, his thoughts dragging him back to when he’d lost his brother. He’d decided that he needed to get out of his apartment so despite that it was his night off, he had come to the bar and was sitting in a corner booth with his beer.
“Uh, yeah.” He answered. “I’m JJ.”
“Mariella Diaz.” She smiled, sliding into the other side of the booth. “The tonto at the bar ordering drinks is my brother, Eddie.”
“You’re the paramedics that showed up, right?”
“We are.” She confirmed. “Although, I have to say it would have been a completely different outcome had you not been there. The mother said she was stuck in a rip current, those usually don’t end well. She said you just jumped in without a thought and pulled her out. Most people wouldn’t have thought to do that.”
JJ was silent, kind of shocked by this woman’s boldness. She’d just sat down and started talking to him like they were old friends and he didn’t know what to say. Before he could reply, her brother showed up and gave her a disapproving look.
“Mari, what have I told you about talking to strangers.” He told her, but sat down next to her anyway. “Here’s your straight whiskey, you crazy ass woman. I’m Eddie, by the way.”
“This is JJ.” She told him. “He’s the guy that jumped in after that little girl today, so not a stranger. I was just telling him that most people wouldn’t jump in like that.”
“Well.” JJ sighed as he took a drink. “I couldn’t just watch another kid die like that.”
Both siblings were quiet, looking at him with shocked expressions as they took in that information. It was clear that Mariella wanted to ask, but was afraid to so he just gave them both a weak smile.
“Thirteen years ago, I was ten years old and my brother, Tyler, took me to the beach. The surf was rough, but our dad had been drinking again and he wanted to make sure I was out of the house so we went to the beach. I was standing on the shore while he took our one surfboard out and he was knocked off. I didn’t know anything about rip currents but when the board came back and he didn’t, it scared me. I could just barely see him struggling. He was so far out. So I ran to the nearest adult and told them, but they couldn’t get to him in time. They finally got him back to shore, and did CPR until paramedics arrived, but it was too late.” He took another drink. “He was only fifteen. He just, he was the one that always took the brunt of what my dad did when he was drunk because he didn’t want me to get hurt. After he died, my dad got worse and eventually skipped town when I was sixteen.”
“Shit” she frowned. “I’m sorry, that had to be rough. Edmundo here drives me insane but a couple years ago he was shot and the thought of him dying terrified me. I couldn’t imagine if he actually died.”
“It was hard.” JJ told her. “But it’s been thirteen years, y’know? I still think of him all the time. If he would have gotten out, what he’d be doing now. It was part of the reason I even came to California. He always said he wanted to see the west coast.”
“That’s a good thing.” Eddie told him. “Keep his memory alive.”
“I uh, I came into some money when I was almost seventeen. It was kind of a local legend, this ship that went down with 400 million in gold.” JJ half smiled, thinking of the adventure he and his friends had gone on years ago. “The Royal Merchant. My friend, his dad was obsessed with it. Well, Big John went missing when we were sixteen and John B, he became obsessed that his dad was still alive.”
“Was he?”
“Yeah.” JJ laughed. “We almost died like, four times. John B was framed for murder by his girlfriend's dad and brother. I stole my dads boat to help them off the island when that happened. But the boat capsized in a tropical storm, they were presumed dead, then they weren’t dead and ended up in the Bahamas. Sarah’s brother shot her, she died for a couple minutes, they came back to North Carolina, John B was arrested. I got hit in the head with a machete.”
“Holy shit.”
“It gets wilder. We were stranded on an island for six weeks, and survived a plane crash. There was a train heist. Sarah’s ex boyfriend burned down John B’s house while we were all inside of it. Kie’s parents shipped her off to wilderness camp because “we were bad influences on her” and I busted her out, then rode in a cargo ship full of weed to South America.”
“Wait.” Eddie stopped the younger man. “I think my husband read an article or something about this. Four teenagers from North Carolina who found El Dorado.”
“Yeah.” JJ laughed. “We went through a lot of shit in like a four month time span. Also, technically only John B and Sarah found El Dorado. They were the only two who actually saw it. We were held hostage by this crazy man trying to get rich off of it and he was going to shoot Sarah, but her dad literally sacrificed himself to save her. Threw himself off a cliff taking one of this guy’s buddies down. Big John was shot and didn’t make it back. Anyway, they split the money six ways. We didn’t actually get any of it until we were eighteen, but I have a good little nest egg to sit on.”
“How much is “little”? I’m just curious.”
“About sixty seven million a piece.” JJ told them. “Actually, it’s probably more due to interest now. I kept most of it in a savings account.”
“He sounds like Buck.” Mari laughed. “And his trust fund.
“Who’s Buck?” JJ questioned.
“My husband.” Eddie clarified. “His grandparents started a trust fund for him when he was little that he couldn’t access until he was twenty five, but didn’t tell his parents about it, only his older sister. So by the time they got back in contact, he was twenty six and this money had been sitting collecting interest for twenty years, so he had more money than he knew what to do with, so he just….left it sit. He used part of it to put a down payment on our house and start college funds for my son and our daughter. But otherwise, he just uses what he makes.”
“I don’t know, you just remind me of him. Especially when he was younger and super impulsive.”
“Well, maybe that’s a good thing.” JJ laughed. “It sounds messed up but I wasn’t trying to be a hero today, but when she came to, god it felt good being able to say I did that.”
“Well, your impulsiveness saved a kid's life today, JJ.” Mari told him. “And you should be proud of that.”

Expandable House, Batam Riau Islands
The expandable house combines a conventional steel-reinforced concrete frame with an aerated concrete block cladding and an innovative composite bamboo cladding:
Tailored to and learning from the rapidly expanding peri-urban fringes of Asian cities like Batam – the world’s fastest-growing in 2015 – this new sustainable dwelling type is designed to be flexibly configured around its residents’ often precarious resources over time.
Locally made retractable bamboo screens are used for rain screens, shading and privacy:
Its steel-reinforced concrete frame has aerated concrete block cladding at ground and composite bamboo cladding or retractable bamboo screens above.
Hydroponic cultivation of leafy greens in the companion vertical kitchen garden (or kebun susun):
It is based around the following five principles:
(1) Sandwich section: the roof can be hoisted to add levels – the foundations can support up to three floors.
(2) Domestic density: the house encourages densification at domestic and neighbourhood scales.
(3) Decentralised systems: rainwater harvesting, solar panels, septic tanks and passive cooling principles are integrated.
(4) Productive landscapes: a vertical kitchen garden and bamboo nursery are included.
(5) Seed package: the technology, resource strategies and design guidelines can be developed in different ways depending on local social, cultural and environmental conditions.
Interior detail showing the perforated aerated cement block and composite bamboo panels:
The project supplements the dynamic logics of auto-construction endemic to rapid urbanisation in peri-urban regions:

Quilt Block Mania - May is Desert
Welcome to my stop on the Quilt Block Mania Blog Hop. Each of the designers participating in the hop are sharing a block pattern inspired by this month’s theme, which is Desert!
This is my fifth year participating in QBM, and I hope you’ve enjoyed my free block pattern each month! If you’ve missed any, the patterns for previous months are available in my shop.
To learn how to get my free pattern, see How to Get the Free Block at the end of this post.
As you know I am an Island Batik designer and former Ambassador. So when I heard that the theme this month was desert, I knew I had to design a gecko like the one Island Batik uses! Of course, desert geckos look differently than Bali geckos so the coloring on mine is different. Still, I’m happy to have a gecko block that reminds me of my ties to Island Batik.
I call my block Gecko. It uses raw-edge fusible applique techniques. If you need help with that technique, click here for a photo tutorial. I hope you’ll make my block and tag me on social media @inquiringquilter!
To learn how to get my free pattern, see How to Get the Free Block at the end of this post.
There are lots of designers in this hop so be sure to visit all of them for your free pattern. Here are links to all the blocks in the Quilt Block Mania Desert Series:

Week 11 - Creating the Collage
Objects
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have added over 20 elements because I am working with collage and could make a mistake or an object could not work with the composition.
Explantions for the objects I ended up using:
Thrift Tag:
Second-hand shopping is one of my favourite things to do in my spare time. The interesting thing about thrift is it provides opportunities. I buy clothing from thrift shops that I never would have bought new, even if it's at a similar price, just because of the concept of re-using.
Amethyst Card:
This card is from a wise old woman at the crystal shop in my hometown. I was always infatuated by her knee-length white hair and her extensive knowledge about the different stones. She introduced me to how I could use stones to calm my anxiety.
Just Enough Design book:
This is the first design-specific book I bought for myself. Taku Satoh’s ideology surrounding “hodo-hodo” (to not overdo) is a concept I keep in mind whenever I feel overwhelmed by the design process or outcome. The book is specific to me because I bought it the same day I listened to him speak at AGI.
Bali’s Visa On Arrival:
Travel has been a big part of my upbringing, my family took us to a different country in South-East Asia each year consecutively for 6 years. have always found an odd feeling of peace in the craziness. I have taken many
Sketch Book Extract:
I have scrapbooked and sketched since I began primary school. At age 5 I would entertain myself by cutting up different magazines and cardboard to create collages while my mum was busy with my little siblings. To this day analogue/scrapbook themes still show through in my design practices.
Gong-Cha Loyalty Card:
No deep underlying themes here. I love boba tea, I get one almost every day. Sitting in a cool space and being creative with a boba tea is my happy place.
5,000 Idonesian Rupiah
I included this note to represent my dream to live and work in Bali. The money represents my plan to set up a design studio and put Indonesian design on the map within the industry. I believe Indonesia has the creative potential to make an impact in the design world.
Messy Screen Printing:
This is an image of my dad holding me as a baby. I have an album of photos that only exist as physical images, meaning there is only one copy. This adds immense value and I protect these photos with my life.
The Form of the Book Book Edited by Sara De Bondt and Fraser Muggeridge:
This is another book I bought at AGI. It explores the history of book design, how it developed and the way it is heading. I felt it important to be educated on the historical fundamentals of book design to remain informed when designing my own publications.
Birthday Notes:
I have kept every handwritten birthday card I have ever received, there is a massive box in my attic full of them. I am an emotional and sentimental person, and I cherish all the sweet words from my loved ones. I hope to make everyone proud with my design career.
The Federal Cafe Voucher Envelope:
This is my favourite old American-style diner/cafe, I love the atmosphere. This envelope holds the voucher my best friend got me. It makes me laugh because the name she calls me is written on the front. I considered scribbling it out for this poster, but I guess it's authentic.
Acrylic Paint Spots:
Painting is a medium I have loved for a long time. It started with realism oil painting classes when I was 8 and has turned more towards surrealism. My painting doesn’t tend to come into my design practice much, it is more of a hobby and something I do to wind down.
Pink Sea Shell:
I grew up in the mountains and only got to experience the beach a couple of times a year and when I did it was near impossible to get me out of the sea. My dad always called me “his water baby.”
Music Sheet:
My Nana was the first to hold me when I was born which she tells me gives us a special connection. She has a grand piano that she would play for my cousins and I growing up. She tried to teach me but I was never any good.
Polaroid Picture:
Photography is a practice I have engaged with since I was young. I have had many types of cameras; Cannon, film, and iPhone but Polaroid is my favourite because it produces a tactile picture. I like that the photos are not available digitally.
Brass Key
This key is simply for looks. My best friend/flatmate found a pile of these keys at her work, and she gave them to me knowing I would love them. I plan to make a necklace and earrings out of them.
Dried Leaves
A creative practice I do often is drying out flowers. I do this for both aesthetics and sentimental value. In the same way, I collect letters written to me, I also preserve any flowers I receive by drying them out and creating arrangements.
Essential Oil
My mum was always into mindfulness and its practices. She always preferred natural remedies over pharmaceuticals. Even after moving out I still use essential oils and natural remedies to treat sicknesses.
Scalpel
This tool has been used for a wide range of projects but is most commonly used for my collages and cutouts for scrapbooking.
Silver Frame
I was given this frame the day I was born. It was my great-grandmother’s, it has been passed down two generations before it reached me. This frame is only to be used for pictures of family.
Collage Layouts:

A more minimalistic approach to the collage

Busier layouts with more depth.

These are a middle ground between minimal and busy. They are quite linear and lined up horizontally.
