The Golden Age of superhero comic books cast a huge shadow on artists from all around the world and the Philippines were no exception.
Back in the 1950s Mars Revelo and Nestor Redondo gave us Darna, a crime fighting extraterrestrial who decides to inhabit the body of Narda, an orphan, who lives with her little brother, Bing, and their grandmother ...

[translations by Multo Ghost]
Needless to say Bing and Grandma don't react very well the first time not Wonder Woman shows up ...
Tumblr media
Soon, however, Darna is out fighting crime and righting wrongs, with her brother Bing as the sidekick (because child endangerment laws had yet to be invented, it seems). Her primary adversary was Valentina, who (the authors go lengths to point out) is totally not Medusa:
Tumblr media
Perhaps it isn't all that surprising that as Darna kept getting popular she started appearing in her own television shows and movies (the last series coming out in 2022) ...

Darna at ang Babaing Tuod (1965) staring Gina Alonzo.
Perhaps you needed to have grown up with the source material, but as comic book heroines I'd never heard of before go, I find Darna endearing in a curious sort of way.

I let myself think a little bit.
Tenoch has spoken openly about colorism and racism and how that has affected him personally. He's talked about how he tried to assimilate into that elitist culture. How he lost his voice and it took him a lot to find himself again. To embrace who he was and how acceptable he was in his true state. Not just the tanned skin but also his features, his voice, and his different talents.
I feel like I am on a similar journey. I've fought with myself over internalized racism. Wanting to be lighter and thinner because that's the 'Asian standard of beauty'. But it's such a closed off standard. I was born tan. My people live beneath the sun and play on beaches. Our culture and identity was stripped from us. I and many other Filipinos have now come to embrace the heritage we have. And as I've delved into the mythos of the Philippines, learning origins of words I have heard daily that no one had taught me, I am so sad to see how much has been lost. I hope someone can take up that mantle for us in a public setting the way Tenoch is doing. I am embracing my skin, my features, and the good and bad things of my place of origin. I am writing in an aim to eventually write a novel based on the lost mythology of the Philippines. I want to make that contribution to the world because I gave up before.
I was an actor for 10 years from adolescence into adulthood. I was told to my face that I 'wasn't the right type of asian'. That I didn't have the 'look' they wanted despite being told numerous times by numerous people, peers and professors and mentors, that I had god given talent. But aside from personal issues in my life, I couldn't also handle the constant feelings of being an actor who was talented but would never be good enough because of my looks.
I admire Tenoch's tenacity and drive because I wish I had that. But I ultimately gave up acting. I remember crying so hard the last day I walked away from the stage knowing that that chapter of my life was over. Knowing that something that helped shape who I am, gave me confidence, and made me feel truly happy was being put to rest. I miss it so much. But it is still so gratifying to see how the world around me has changed. I couldn't have imagined so much asian representation, indigenous stories, and diversity in media 10 years ago the way it is today.
I hope if there is anyone else out there like the girl I was. The little filipino girl who knew she could act better than all those teleserias her grandma watches. I hope she is confident enough to make a space for herself. I hope actors like Tenoch continue to blaze pathways for lesser seen representation. That they add to the variety of faces we see for each culture and identity.
To all the young actors out there.
Pursue it with all your heart. Have no regrets. Blaze bright.

This is what the original cinemas of Festival Mall looked like today.
Only THREE screens are being used while the rest remain closed. These old cinemas started with the shopping mall's opening in 1998 and was a very fun place for moviegoers for more than a decade.
Festival Mall is located in Filinvest City in Alabang, Muntinlupa City, Philippines.

i still cant stop thinking about amephil because i literally have no idea how theyll be interacting in canon lmao so here’s just some approaches:
the awkward exes: piri and america just have no idea how to interact with each other anymore, so they default to being unerringly and diplomatically polite. they try to ignore each other outside of official functions, and get extremely flustered when forced to talk to each other in casual settings. everyone else knows that they have history together, but they avoid talking about it so much that nobody tries bringing it up
distant, annoying acquaintance: piri and america get along really well! they’re the best of chums! they’re so similar that they’re almost always on the same page! but they also don’t really bother to catch up personally, like they’ll hang out if they see each other but won’t particularly go out of their way to be with each other. the reason for this is because they annoy each other too easily when theyre stuck together for more than a few hours. they were housemates once and they swore never to do it again.
frenemies: piri and america are ridiculously familiar with each other, due to having lived together for decades when piri was still america’s colony -- a fairly unique relationship that only piri has with america. but because they have so much baggage, every time they interact with each other ends up in a lot of polite-on-the-surface-but-teeming-with-frustration-beneath bickering. they care for each other, which is fairly evident in how they keep seeking each other out just to annoy each other, but you can’t catch them ever admitting it
frenemies with Angst (TM): same as above, but now piri and america are angsty because deep down they really want to reconcile but feel like the other won’t be receptive to it. piri sees america being mean to him as america seeing their past friendship as something he regrets and would rather entirely forget about. america sees piri being mean to him as piri being too bitter about their rocky past to ever see him as an honest friend. there’s still a lot of unprocessed feelings from their history they’re still internally conflicted about, and they get reminded of it every time they see each other. but they have to keep the image of being the airheaded, happy nation, so they just continue to act as belligerent friends.
the friends that act like lovers: piri and america are intensely showy about how affectionate they are to each other. they’re in each other’s social media posts all the time, and america always has his arm draped over piri’s shoulder, and piri keeps calling america these cute pet names, and america is always buying piri gifts, and piri always defends america in conversation... everyone assumes theyre a thing? but theyre really not and laugh off any suggestion of it.
fuck buddies: piri and america are diplomatic allies, and as far as everyone else knows, thats all there is to their relationship. but also, sometimes, england has to visit america to talk about business stuff and piri is the one that walks out of america’s bedroom (and serves him tea, because he’s real hospitable like that). and sometimes indonesia has to pick up piri to go the next asean hangout/party and piri is clearly wearing america’s dress shirt. when asked, neither piri or america ever really give a serious answer and just joke around it.
idiots in pining: piri and america are frustrated! piri cant really explain why he still likes being around america so much even though he has every reason to positively hate his guts! america cant really explain why he still tries caring for piri even though he doesnt really have the obligation to do that anymore! oh, whatever can explain the way they hearts beat like crazy when they’re next to each other or the way they constantly seek out the other’s touch! oh, but unfortunately, piri thinks america still has a thing for russia while america thinks that piri and indonesia are together. what do you mean this burning pain they feel in their chest sounds like jealousy?
divorced: piri and america are perfectly genial to each other at official functions but fight like hell everywhere else. and their fights always end up being so painfully personal too, with stuff like “why did you betray me?” or “you always said you’d be by my side!” getting thrown out every so often. you’d laugh about how melodramatic they can get but they look so heartwrenchingly pained at each argument that you just feel sad. their friends try to ensure they never meet, if they can help it. they love each other, but the trust between them is just so irrevocably broken that they’ll never truly get over it.

Exploring the Works of Lino Brocka: 'Insiang' Review
by Isobelle Cruz [October 5, 2022]
Tumblr media
ABOVE: Hilda Koronel as Insiang[Photo: The Film Foundation]
Today I got another look into Lino Brocka’s world, or what could also be referred to as the real Philippine society that is often glazed over in cinema. After my first encounter with Manila in the Claws of Light, I immediately went ahead and searched for other Brocka films that may serve the same rawness and awareness to lower-class Philippine society.
‘Insiang’ depicts the everyday life of Filipinos in the lower masses of the country around the years of 1976, when this film was first released and was later featured in numerous screening festivals and bagged awards from the Metro Manila Film Festival, one of them being for Best Cinematography—which is all well-deserved.
Although it is great to showcase a brighter side of the country on screen and is much appreciated, transparency and representation of the world beneath the rich Filipinos of Manila without glossing over its truths can be somewhat refreshing, as wrong as that may sound. This film was temporarily banned during the Marcos regime, because the then-dictator’s wife, Imelda Marcos, frowned upon its showcase of an image of Manila that was opposite to the one they were trying to sell to the world and keep to themselves, which is exactly why this film among others rebelliously produced during that era, is so important and deserve to be revisited.
Tumblr media
The film starts off already brutally with shots set in a slaughterhouse where pigs are butchered and killed for products in the market, setting up what the audience would further witness in the piece: undiminished and gruesome representation and shots of the cruel and difficult parts of Philippine society.
INSIANG: Mahal kita, Bebot, kaya lang hindi ko gusto ginagawa mo sa akin sa loob ng sine.
BEBOT: Eh, lalaki ako, Isiang. Mapipigil ko ba ang sarili ko?
ABOVE: A conversation between Insiang and her boyfriend
The objectification of women is one of the main subjects that this film handles, aside from poverty and the sadly normalized manipulation of parents over their children, and of men over women. In today’s time, even with the overly encouraged activism to show truth and give justice to the country’s real struggles and debunking the richness only brought by corruption, producing a film like Brocka’s still brings a ton of risk for criticism, and even more so with another Marcos given power.

Renowned Filipina actress, Mona Lisa, did an unnerving performance as Tonya, the manipulative and controlling mother of Insiang, which helped set up the film’s tension. With these powerful characters surrounding Insiang and giving her barely any choice to live her own life and escape the madness of her world, Brocka makes me think of all the other people—mostly women—that live with the chokehold that our protagonist goes through.
Ngayong nakaganti ka na, siguro maligayang maligaya ka na.
ABOVE: Tonya to her daughter Insiang, after killing Dado
Unlike Manila in the Claws of Light, released only a year before this film, Insiang has more of a still and let-down ending. But nonetheless, Lino Brocka’s seventh production remains an important piece of Philippine cinema that deserves all the recognition and revisiting by the latest generations.
