where can I watch it: peacock
rating 6/10
I was surprised by this one. While some plot points/holes were nonsensical (why wasn't the girl Mike's daughter? What was that side plot with the Aunt? Something that was so nagging me and the person I was watching with kept joking about how Mike's parents were still fuckin' after their first son was kidnapped), and it felt to me personally that Matthew Illard was criminally underutilzed I still thought it was a good time.
The movie isn't one-to-one with the game, which I think works in its favor. It really makes an effort to remember that these vengeful spirits are children which leads to some very refreshing plot beats.
Overall, I'd say it's a good time. If you have peacock or can get a free trial like I did and have a couple hours free, I'd say give it a watch. But it isn't what I'd call a groundbreaking horror game adaptation.
A Spooktober Commencement with American Psycho
As the crisp October nights descend and the shadows grow longer, I embarked on my Spooktober journey with a cinematic choice that has long intrigued me: “American Psycho.” Settling into the eerie ambiance of the season, I found myself immersed in the twisted world of Patrick Bateman, exploring the depths of his dark psyche. It was a chilling…
When you need a new show to watch, I can't recommend Twisted Metal enough. I was worried it would be terrible but the music licensing alone is impressive. Dark comedy, great writing and acting - they cast a wrestler for Sweet Tooth which is genius considering you need exaggerated physical moves for a masked character. Balanced story/action/comedy. I wanted to see the Brothers Grimm, but fingers crossed for season 2. POC cast, LGBTQIA+ representation, female empowerment, body positivity - more of this, please. You mother fuckers really did this. 🤡 🚘 🍕 🚀 🚔 🍆 🌼
I hate the age of streaming. I hate that the success of a show depends on how well it trends on Twitter or how popular its music or sounds are on TikTok. I hate how fandoms have become commodities, narrative themes nothing more than pithy slogans you can slap on a hat, moral messages as empty and hollow as a coke commercial because the corporation behind them don't believe in anything but capital. I hate the algorithm that dominates our lives and interests, I hate the marketization of everything that could ever be loved. I hate how something as pure as wanting to see yourself in the stories you enjoy has become something so tainted and evil and reeking of pandering, or worse, of trying to stir controversy just for the clicks and the outrage. I hate how they use minority casting that way, it's evil and it's exploitative and it's completely performative, with no real interest in elevating marginalized voices.
I hate connected multiverses and big blockbuster franchises with 80 sequels and cameos and bringing back dead horses so you can beat them for all their worth. I'm tired of nostalgia and looking backwards, at something that never truly existed, because you can't stand to look at the world as it is now.
Most of all, though.
I hate the dilution of human storytelling.
I hate that it's all become "content." Just something you must pay for. Something you have to obsessively watch and binge because you have to get your money's worth. I hate that corporations fund these projects because it's something they can add to their catalogue, their bevy of "marketable content."
I hate that they can take any show off any time they want, and then it's just gone.
You can't watch it anymore, not legally anyway. I hate their callous disregard for the work of artists and animators and vfx artists.
I hate it all. I wish blockbuster could go back in time and strangle Netflix.
