He was silent for a long moment, and when I glanced at him, he was looking up at the glass ceiling. He’d gone red as a beet.

“Mal?”

He cleared his throat, crossed his arms. “As a matter of fact, I did. I had some very … distracting thoughts about you.”

“You did?” I sputtered.

“And I felt guilty for every one of them. You were supposed to be my best friend, not…” He shrugged and turned even redder.

“Idiot.”

“That fact is well established and adds nothing to the plot.” I found it hilarious the mal didn't thought he was in love with Alaina I mean come on I don't have romantic thoughts about my friends

Oh, Mal was definitely pacing in his room at the orphanage telling himself “it’s just a crush, it will go away, I don’t actually like Alina like that.” Because the poor kid has nothing even close to family without Alina, so he cannot risk allowing himself to accept his feelings for her. Because the outcome is either she doesn’t like him back, and is weirded out by his feelings and distances herself from him because of it, or she does like him back, but they break up and she never wants to see him again. And Mal can’t have a life without Alina in it. He can’t lose his best friend. So he can’t admit to himself he loves her romantically.

And the saddest/best part is that baby Alina was over in her own room thinking these exact same things about Mal. They literally always both loved each other so much. But they were so young then, not ready to feel that much, not ready to risk the only person they felt completely comfortable and safe with, just for some kissing. So they both just pined for each other for years, knowingly or unknowingly, and it is delicious! The beauty of childhood friends to lovers. They were always going to come together in the end, they just needed time to grow on their own first.

This also totally proves that any claim that Mal didn’t love or care about Alina until she got powers is total bullshit. He always loved her, he just needed a wake-up call to stop repressing his feelings and go for it.

But this is a hilarious exchange though, I love it. Thanks for the ask! I’m always down to talk Malina! 😊

Kinda random, but what made me really start shipping Kataang was how determined Aang was to get Katara's necklace back from Zuko, especially when we know how important said necklace is for her both as part of her family and part of her culture. And the thing is, Aang is always doing nice things for Katara without expecting any reward, like offering to fly her to the North Pole and refusing to train under sexist Pakku. Things that made me go from "this is a cute ship with good development" to "this is my OTP."💙🧡

So true, anon that’s a great scene!! Hmm I don’t know what made me ship it cuz I was 5 when I watched it for the first time so I really didn’t care about ships. But as I got older I started watching the show for Katara and she kept touching him and asking him how she looked dhdjfj it was beyond obvious TO ME (bass amplified).

That and every time she cried over him. It just felt really intense I’d be like why are you crying queen 😫😫😫 she’s so extra I can’t.

But I think a singular scene that really made me ship them was in The Serpent’s Pass when he said she made him believe in hope and she cried. When I think about it, Aang’s opinion seems to mean a lot to Katara and I think he notices that and makes sure to praise her so she won’t doubt herself. I liked seeing the fmc be praised and loved by the boy she liked without having to grovel and look pathetic, you know?

That reminds me of a meta I read the other day about how Sokka (yes I have to mention sokka or katara when I talk about the other 🤪) doesn’t really take compliments and I think Katara is also like that in a less extreme way.

Like when she tried to discredit herself when she revived him with the spirit water and Aang was like hello you literally saved my life??? dhdjdj I don’t care what delusional fanon shippers have to say, Aang compliments and appreciates Katara more than anyone, and that’s my fave part of their dynamic.

Anyways yes I agree with you. Aang always does what Katara wants simply because he wants to and she wants to. They don’t really force the other to agree with them either, even tho they both clearly care a lot for each other’s opinions. I think the show does a great job of setting the foundation for their romantic relationship this way through all these platonic moments.

Back to my fave scene in the Serpent’s Pass, I especially like how that scene shows Aang letting go of one of his beliefs for Katara which is linked to bigger moment of him refusing to let go of her to master the avatar state in the Guru, and eventually finding a whole new way to end the war while still staying true to himself. I don’t wanna say Aang and Katara getting together is integral to his arc or her arc, but I do think they link it in this way on purpose, and it’s why a lot of people that claim “Aang never changed” often don’t ship Kataang and the same for people that hate Katara and call her annoying then say they didn’t understand the ship. Like clearly my guy.

Anyway, to sum up this ramble 🤭 this is why I love the Serpent’s Pass scene and think it’s very underrated among kataang fans. I’m curious to know what kataang scene made oomfs ship too? I loved this ask and thank you for sharing that with me anon xx

hello!! thank you for the ask !! i've only read the first book, so i'll mainly be using that. also because im a certified hater about sansa antis, who mostly dunk on baby sansa

favorite thing about them: she's so goddamn smart. like politically, socially, all over. she answers that question about identifying renly baratheon so smoothly, she entertains the audience with her comments, she realizes that littlefinger is not quite what he seems "his mouth smiled while his eyes did not". so so smart my darling.

least favourite thing about them: nothing. she's perfect. maybe lemon cakes? what's the fixation?? but that might be my problem because i've never had a good one.

y'know I've been thinking about buddie a lot since buck being bi became canon and as much as I love bucktommy I really wonder if/how they can make it endgame. my biggest concern right now is that buddie makes so much sense narratively that anything else would feel forced because for bucktommy (or buckanyoneelse) to be endgame it'll feel like eddie will never find love. I don't necessarily think that's true but it will feel like it. at least in that moment.

both these men have been in and out of relationships for the whole time we've known them and their north star has still always been them. they still always go right back to the other. and that can be done in a platonic way and they can have a platonic soulmates buddie alongside a romantic bucktommy but i dunno

even though I personally do headcanon eddie as arospec and love buddie as both a qpr and a romantic relationship I don't think abc is gonna do a qpr. and I don't think they'll do a poly relationship either and give us bucktommyeddie.

I'm just so worried about how they'll handle this because there's so many people who joined the fandom after 7x04 and have bucktommy as their endgame ship. and I cannot imagine the pain of having a canonical queer otp with a bi main character that you love and hold dear be ripped out of your hands just for another relationship that you may or may not care about. I can see how it would be devastating. I would be so upset if we got buddie only for them to break up and another relationship to take its place down the line.

and while i love buck and tommy together so much I still really only see buddie as endgame with how I perceive the story so far. if bucktommy or anyone else becomes endgame I won't be angry or anything but unless it's well done I'll probably question how they got there.

like it's possible. I'll never say never because they could completely surprise me and Eddie will have a compelling love interest or maybe they'll even go the qpr angle or poly relationship route.

I love multi shipping and I've never expected any ship I have to become canon so I'll survive and most likely be happy no matter what happens. I ultimately have always only wanted buck and eddie and now tommy to be happy.

but I can't stop thinking about whether or not the writers room will completely fumble this. I'm worrying so much I'll give myself a ulcer.

Yeah, probably. But I also think that the mutual pining in canon makes for a better story, so I’m glad that’s what happens.

It is interesting to think about what changes if Mal and Alina are already together when Alina is taken to the Little Palace. It’s much harder for the Darkling to charm and manipulate Alina, for one thing, because she’s less likely to just believe Mal forgot about her when the letters never come. But it also might make it hurt more for Mal to think Alina never told him she had powers if they’re already dating. Or does Mal believe right away that Alina never knew about the powers, because he spends more time with her in this AU and he knows he would’ve felt something was off? It’s something to think about.

Also, a kind aside: sending the same ask to everyone is maybe not the best way to start conversations in fandom. Neither is sending this one to me a second time- I would have gotten to answering the first one at some point. I appreciate the enthusiasm! You just want to be careful so people don’t assume you might be a bot and respond accordingly. :)
