Tagged by @lurkingshan and @stuffnonsenseandotherthings to dig into the vault. Friends, I have been Perpetually Online since 1995, when that meant I had to haunt my school library computer at lunchtime, so this is going to be for the fellow Olds. Sorry in advance for the HP mentions.

1. What ship were you completely obsessed with when you were a teenager, but now you don't care anymore?

Have I let any ships go? Hmm. I'll go with Mulder/Scully from X-Files. Watching now, they should definitely not end up together lol

2. Which ship would you consider your first one?

Sailor Mercury/Sailor Jupiter from Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon. I. Was. Obsessed. This ship hit me like a ton of bricks in I want to say 6th or 7th grade.

I watched the show as it aired with English dubs, found out the episodes we got were censored, immediately fell into my completionist ways, went to the Asian mall (it was literally pan-Asian with stuff from Japan, China, Taiwain, Korea, etc.) and got definitely not official VCDs with Mandarin subtitles, and would sit with friends who spoke Mandarin and had them translate the subs to English for me (I say this like I forced them, but they offered because they were my friends and they also felt passionately about people seeing the uncensored show). I then learned how to Internet and would trawl for fanpages of the manga (it would take 20 minutes to load an image at the time, so rather than full scanlations I'd get walls of text describing what happened with maybe a single panel illustration). Uranus and Neptune were fantastic, but I already had Ami and Makoto aka Mercury and Jupiter long before I got to the Uranus/Neptune episodes (or the Sailor Stars manga arc).

3. Your first fanfic belonged to which couple?

Definitely Sailor Moon fanfic was the first fic I read. It was an easy step from finding fan summaries of the chapters not yet out in English > finding fan sites with fanfic on them, back before we had archives or even decent search engines and you had to just find the sites you needed through links from other sites. It was like a whole new world of possibilities opening up. The first real fanfic community I was in was Harry Potter.

In terms of first fic I wrote, I am not a writer; I've only ever written a small handful of not worth mentioning ficlets featuring the Kirk/Spock ship (Star Trek TOS).

4. Do you remember the first couple you saw a fanart over?

Oh it was likely Serena/Tuxedo Mask from Sailor Moon and it was in person, because I had friends who got me into anime and manga early and they were artists who drew a lot of fanart.

5. Did you ever get into ship discourse?

Friends, I had a Livejournal. It was impossible not to get into ship discourse.

6. Did you used to have any no-otp or have it currently?

I am going to echo @stuffnonsenseandotherthings and @lurkingshan and say I was dead-set against Hermione as a ship with any of the men in Harry Potter (Hermione/Luna or Hermione/Ginny, though, we could talk), and I also really disliked Draco/Ron. I also am not here for Spock/McCoy (Star Trek), and I don't really enjoy Stucky (as in Captain America/Winter Soldier or Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes from Marvel).

OH and can I be a hater on main for a second? The first couple that I remember hating as a thing was probably Jo and Professor Bhaer from Little Women; I was SO MAD they married in the end. I felt very validated years later when I read that the author Lousia May Alcott was forced by her publisher to marry Jo off and made up the couple out of spite.

7. Who were the couple in the last fanfic you read?

The last fic I read was a Word of Honour modern AU pairing Wen Ke Xing/Zhou Zishu in which they rescued stray kittens.

SInce I started this, I've also read a One Piece Luffy/Zoro fic (and that's not even my favourite ship--I've been a Zoro/Sanji girlie since the early 2000s! I'm weak for banter.)

8. Currently, do you have any OTPs?

I have so many. SO many. Truly. I don't even know where to start with this question! I follow several AO3 tags and fanfic writers that I get regular fic updates from. Most of my OTPs are either canon (from queer/BL/GL media) or the most popular ship (I feel very lucky that my taste is so basic). There is no one couple I love the most. Just going to throw a dart at the board: From BL, the one I come back to a lot is Hira/Kiyoi in Utsukushii Kare, because their dynamic is so intense.

9. Is there any couple that, to this day, you are extremely mad about not getting together?

Hmm. That's what fandom is for, so not really? I usually get more annoyed when people do get together that I wish had stayed platonic (never forgiving Pacific Rim for that kiss, it was so unnecessary). And I'm extremely mad about censorship, i.e. couples that DID get together but we didn't get to see it for whatever reason (see e.g. Uranus and Neptune from Sailor Moon Sailor Stars; Chinese danmei novel live-action adaptations). Otherwise there are lots of these but I just read the fanfic and recover. I'll say I'm still annoyed Buffy didn't get to have with Faith what she had with Spike though. Their chemistry was off the charts.

10. Is there any ship you used to dislike but now you think they are kind of interesting?

This is such a hard question. I came around a little on Lan Xichen/Jiang Cheng from MDZS/the Untamed, though it's still not my fave (it's a soft no not a hard no). I'll also give you an oldie: Andie McPhee and Pacey from Dawson's Creek. I hated Andie's character back in the day but now I like her character but really dislike how she was used in the show, which isn't the same thing. And I actually really liked how she and Pacey worked together.

I'll also give you a BL one: Kurosawa and Haruta in Ossan's Love. Ossan's Love s1 & 3 it was clear they were not OTP so that's a bit irrelevant anyway, but it's much less clear in s2 (the AU season) and the first time I watched it I wasn't sure how I felt about the way that season ended as much as I loved the season as a whole. I like it more every time I rewatch.

11. Do you have any ship that, in the past, was considered normal but now you would be cancelled over?

LOL I am with everyone else on the Brian/Justin train but since that's been said twice I'll go with something else. I was a big Harry/Draco shipper back in the day, which would now probably get me cancelled for shipping someone with his bully (though a significant part of the fun of that ship was about how Draco was such an ineffectual bully...but I digress), in addition to of course how the author's transphobia ruined the whole thing for all of us (fanfic doesn't make her any money, so I don't have a problem continuing to read it in theory, but it's left a sour note over my experience and makes any engagement in that fandom less fun).

12. What was your favorite crack ship?

I was one of those foolish people obsessed with Hawkeye/Coulson before we'd even seen them face-to-face or knew almost anything about MCU Clint Barton. I still read fanfic of that ship even though it's been fully jossed and makes no sense at all anymore. Ok one more, I really love the very small Breakfast Club fandom shipping Brian/John and Claire/Allison. I've read the few fics on AO3 for the queer pair ghost ships in that show multiple times.

13. Who is the couple you read more fanfics of?

Of all time, I've probably read the most Kirk/Spock fanfic. But that's due to the length of time I've been into the ship, the amount of time it's existed, and its popularity. I still read Kirk/Spock regularly.

14. What most of your ships usually have in common?

Honestly most can be boiled down to grumpy/sunshine pairs in which both are very competent in specific ways and both are hiding crippling self esteem issues behind their grumpy or sunshine-ness, and have strong but differing moral codes that they each respect in one another (and is usually where the feelings start). Banter is a must. I am admittedly also here for height difference in my ships. Double-plus bonus for terrible communicators who learn to understand one another's particular communication quirks.

Perfect encapsulation of this dynamic is Danny/Steve from Hawaii Five-0 (listen that show was copaganda trash but the fanfic was fun as hell).

15. What do you absolutely hate in a ship?

Power dynamics that remain unaddressed as part of the story. Hate to love that isn't earned over time. When the relationship makes each other worse rather than better. When they never learn to trust one another. When one of them is in it as part of a savior complex and that doesn't get challenged or worked through. When only one of them has a personality. There's very little that I'd say is a hard no in terms of dynamics or setup for me, but it has to be handled well, and sometimes I don't have the energy to give something the benefit of the doubt.

1 - What ship were you completely obsessed with when you were a teenager, but now you don’t care about anymore?

Hmm, I’m trying to think. I don’t have the best memory of my life as a teen, it was pretty hectic and I didn’t get my first personal computer with internet access until I was 18 years old. So I wasn’t really into the fandom spaces yet, I guess I’ll go with Buffy and Spike? I loved them as a couple so much and now I’m just like; meh, whatever.

2 - Which ship would you consider your first one?

Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask, I was just kid but I was very very invested in them finally kissing lol. Me and my older sister used to watch the English version that they aired in the West in the 90’s, so it wasn’t even a dubbed Anime it was legit changed for American audiences.

Note: I am not American, but you get my point.

3 - Your first fanfic belonged to which couple?

The first fic I ever wrote I think might have belonged to Willow and Tara 🤔 I’m trying to remember, I’m pretty sure it was Willow and Tara.

4 - Do you remember the first couple you saw fanart of?

Not really, I was never on the fanart side of fandom spaces because of my total and absolute lack of talent lol. So I’m not really sure what fanart I came across for the very first time, knowing my luck it was something cursed on Google that I accidentally stumbled upon and thus blocked from my memory.

5 - Did you ever get into ship discourse?

Not really, I once stopped interacting with an entire fandom when I started getting attacked because I happened to like a bisexual character with a character of the opposite sex better than with a character of the same sex. Basically I was being called homophobic and other terrible things because I was reblogging het gif sets and pics instead of lesbian gif sets and pics. The fandom for this series was extremely toxic and I actually stopped watching the series because of how much the fandom tainted it for me, all because I thought the het couple had better chemistry then the sapphic couple, that’s all. The character was canonically bisexual and had dated both of the other characters at one point or another on the show, I just thought she happened to work better with the male character. Sigh, people are weird.

6 - Did you used to have a NOTP or have any currently?

Yes, back in the day when I was very active in the Whovian fandom, I was very much against shipping Gwen and Jack from Torchwood. They were my NOTP, not gonna lie, they’re lowkey still my NOTP lol.

7 - Who were the couple in the last fanfic you read?

AlanJeff, I’m still very much stuck in my ‘Alan and Jeff live happily ever after’ phase of mourning Pit Babe’s ending lol.

8 - Currently do you have any OTPs?

Oh man *cracks knuckles* let me just hop onto my AO3 history, my current obsessions OTPs are;

SeanWhite, ToddBlack, AkkAyan, AlanJeff, PhayaTharn, KaranAchi, PheeJin, Tae Myungha x Cha Yeowoon, Sangwoo x Jaeyoung and Lan Wangji x Wei Wuxian.

Those are the ones that I can confidently say I consider OTPs atm.

9 - Is there any couple that to this day you are extremely mad about them not getting together?

I mean, does it even have to be said?

10 - Is there any ship that you used to dislike but now you think are kind of interesting?

Hmm, I don’t think so. Chances are if I disliked the ship before, I’d probably still dislike it now.

11 - Do you have a ship that in the past was considered ‘normal’ but now you would be cancelled over?

Ginger and Bridgette from Ginger Snaps, it’s an incest ship because they’re sisters but to be fair to teenage me, the writer and director both talked about how they purposely played up the fact that the pair were borderline incestual. Especially as Ginger became more and more feral (it’s a werewolf horror trilogy), she sexualized her relationship with her sister because that’s what her animal instincts were telling her to do. As she crawled over her talking about masturbation before whispering in her ear; it’s like we’re not even related anymore. I’m pretty sure teenage me has a glitch as my brain tried to figure out why that was so hot.

They continued to play up that whole ‘animals fuck their own family in the wild’ angle in both the sequel and the prequel, the story purposely was saying that there was no one for them but each other.

So yeah, I fell for it. I was a horny and sexually confused 15 year old who had a crush on the main actress of the trilogy lol, of course I shipped them.

12 - What’s your favourite crack ship?

Crack ship? I don’t really know, I mean what even is a crack ship anymore, ya know? In this day and age, most fandom spaces allow you to ship whoever the fuck you want, rule 34 was long ago blown past by shippers and now it feels like crack ships are a thing of the past.

13 - Who is the couple you’ve read the most fanfics of?

Probably Sterek, Destiel is a close second but I’m going to say Sterek with like 88% certainty that I’m correct lol.

14 - What do most of your ships usually have in common?

15 - What do you absolutely hate in a ship?

Miscommunication! I absolutely loathe it when a ship is on the rocks or breaks up because no one would just fucking talk to each other! It drives me insane, because like just speak to one another, why is that so impossible!? I’m in a poly relationship IRL, I have been for over 16 years. When you’re dating more than one person, the idea of not communicating is just baffling! Communication is key! Like, what? Is this just a monogamous thing!? Why can’t the characters just talk to one another, open and honest dialogue. Arg!… so yeah, miscommunication gets me a little heated lmao.

Just got back from seeing Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny. And I liked it actually. Much more coherent movie than Crystal Skull.

It’s just a fun movie, it goes in quite a cartoonish direction (I actually laughed during the climax), but cartoons are fun. It’s very entertaining action, and it’s not too unrealistic. The movie does a good job of working around Indy’s age, so his abilities feel in line with a 70-year old person (played by an 80-year old). The de-aging CGI for opening sequence set in 1944 works well too.

Phoebe Bridger-Waller’s character Helena Shaw stole the show, she is the most interesting character in movie by having the best arc. It’s basically Indy’s arc from Temple of Doom, about learning there is more to value than “fortune and glory.” She even has the kid sidekick, just like Indy did. And she is positioned as a younger version of Indy, so that tracks. Fun character, loved getting to see a woman getting to be a conwoman rogue with a hidden heart of gold.

Indy’s arc is more problematic, but overall it works. It is about him aging, and like many old people he feels out of touch with the present. In this case 1969. He is lonely, Mutt is dead, and he is estranged from Marion. His university is retiring him. Even his hippie neighbours are playing The Beatles too loudly. He wants to live in the past, quite literally. The arc as such is him realizing there are still people who care about him in the present, so he should stay around. It’s making a point about nostalgia, even as this movie relies on nostalgia.

The problematic bit is Indy/Marion. I dislike the use of Marion in this film, she basically comes in only at the end to anchor Indy in the present, having no real goals of her own. And that’s a problem Crystal Skull also has with Indy/Marion. There is no real exploration of the relationship, despite the history being quite involved. They were estranged for decades by the time of Crystal Skull, and the movie doesn’t explore how that relationship worked, and why it failed, and doesn’t answer the question of how the characters grew so the relationship could now work. It just expects Indy/Marion to work because it was in Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Raiders is a classic movie, so Indy/Marion by association is true love, the OTP. And Dial of Destiny commits the same mistake. We have the relationship having failed again, and there is no deeper exploration of why or how, just them being “estranged over grief”, and in the film’s ending scene Marion walks back in and they literally do an extended reference to Raiders so now it magically works again. It’s too little for such an important part of the main character’s arc.

It’s especially annoying because Indy and Helena spend almost the entire movie building an interesting relationship, where Indy becomes a kind of father figure to her. And that relationship, which is actually built up in the movie could have worked as Indy’s anchor in the present.

Still, the movie is good solid fun for the most part. The nazi villain Voller really works for the movie. Him being a Werner von Braun inspired figure who got hired by the US in Operation Paperclip works really well for the theme of Indy feeling out of touch with present. Once Indy’s government fought the nazis, now they are working with them to build moon rockets. And Voller has a similar obsession with the past that mirrors Indy’s. The performance by Mads Mikkelsen is really impressive too.

In the end Dial of Destiny is a fine adventure movie, with entertaining thrills and perils. Helena Shaw is a really good character. And even Indy’s character ends up saying something about nostalgia and living in the past that is far more coherent than whatever Crystal Skull tries to do, even if both movies are a bit weighed down by Indy/marion bullshit.

What ship were you completely obsessed with when you were a teenager, but now you don't care about anymore?

Oh gosh it's been so long since I was a teenager. And there have been so many. It's less that I don't care and more that just, the obsession has faded and I don't actively ship them any more. Most of my old ships, I do still like, and under the right circumstances, I might be able to spark an interest again. Let's see, some things I was really into as a teenager...Buffy/Angel...Kunzite/Zoicite (Sailor Moon)...Zechs/Noin (Gundam Wing)...probably more, but those are the ones that stick out as being like super-ships for me.

2. Which ship would you consider your first one?

Mulder/Scully. I shipped them before I even knew what shipping was.

3. Your first fanfic was about which couple?

That I wrote? And actually published somewhere? ExR Les Mis fic.

4. Do you remember the first couple you saw fanart of?

Not really but it was probably something from Sailor Moon.

5. Have you ever gotten into ship discourse?

Nah, ship and let ship.

6. Did you use to have any NOTP or have one currently?

I have had them before and I have them now. In the interest of not hating on things I know other people like, I won't name them.

7. Who were the couple in the last fanfic you read?

I read a Gong Shangjue/Gong Yuanzhi drabble while I was scrolling on tumblr yesterday. It's not really one of my current ships but it was a good little drabble!

8. Currently, do you have any OTPs?

9. Is there any couple that, to this day, you are extremely mad about not getting together?

I've been thinking about this question since I read through @lucientelrunya's answers, because I KNOW I had one but now I can't for the life of me remember what it was. Like these two people were so perfect for each other and it didn't happen and I remember being livid about it, but I guess I've since blocked it from my memory.

Also, not really "not getting together" but I'm mad that John Grey/Percy Wainright didn't get BACK together in Outlander. :|

10. Is there any ship you used to dislike but now you think they are kind of interesting?

Nothing I can think of off the top of my head.

11. Do you have any ship that, in the past, would've been considered normal but now you would be cancelled over?

I guess some of my ships from The Fandom Which Must Not Be Named would fit. Author sucks, but I do still like the characters/ship.

12. What is your favorite crack ship?

Changheng/Dongfang Xunfeng (LBFAD). Don't ask. I think I'm the only one here. It came to me in a dream once and now I kind of ship it.

13. What is the couple you read the most fanfics about?

Uhhhh...I'd say probably Zechs/Noin from Gundam Wing. I read a LOT of GW fanfic back in the day. Like. A Lot. Like everything that existed on ff.n with that pairing. Because we didn't have AO3 back then. Weilan (Guardian) is probably a close second.

14. What do most of your ships usually have in common?

ANGST. Seriously I'm not sure what it is but I have had a ton of immortal/mortal ships, which will, in most cases, inevitably end in tears.

15. What you absolutely hate in a ship?

Lack of communication. The number of times I've actually yelled at my screen because of relationship drama that could have easily been avoided by having one simple conversation is...too high to count.

What ship were you completely obsessed with when you were a teenager, but now you don't care about anymore?

Um.... There are so many pairings I don't really care about anymore because it's been so long and I have been in so many fandoms since. I think my first pairing as a teen was Taito from Digimon, at least that's the biggest thing I can remember. There are also pairings I cared very deeply about even after my teenage years that I chose to let go of because of the author...

2. Which ship would you consider your first one?

The first one I can really remember was Taito from Digimon, but it's been so long, there might have been ones before that?

3. Your first fanfic was about which couple?

Uhhhh... I feel so old right now, I don't really remember what my actual first fanfic was? But I remember working on a Sailor Moon + Stargate kinda AU which had some pairings but really it was about friendship between the girls.

4. Do you remember the first couple you saw fanart of?

There probably was digimon fanart, too, other than that Sailor Moon fanart of Usagi and Mamoru.

5. Have you ever gotten into ship discourse?

No, I never really interacted with fandom like that.

6. Did you use to have any NOTP or have one currently?

I always have pairings I don't care about or pairings that I avoid for different reasons, maybe I don't care about the one character or I think the paired people would be better as just platonic friends or whatever. But, like any responsible adult I block and just don't read what I don't like.

7. Who were the couple in the last fanfic you read?

Fuba my love <3

8. Currently, do you have any OTPs?

Well, Fuba again, definitely my current OTP :)

9. Is there any couple that, to this day, you are extremely mad about not getting together?

Hmmm I don't think? Rather the other way around, I can get annoyed that so many movies and dramas push pairings that are just annoying and needless and would be better left as friendship.

10. Is there any ship you used to dislike but now you think they are kind of interesting?

Hmm no, I don't think so.

11. Do you have any ship that, in the past, would've been considered normal but now you would be cancelled over?

Um... I don't know? I don't care about the purity police. I guess nowadays any Digimon fanfic could be problematic because they are young teens? Oh, and definitely some pairings from the fandom we don't want to support anymore.

12. What is your favorite crack ship?

What even is a crack ship? Crack is not really my genre...

13. What is the couple you read the most fanfics about?

I honestly have no idea. I have read so so so many fanfics in my life and so many times there weren't many for a pairing I wanted and I would have read so many more...

14. What do most of your ships usually have in common?

Hmmm that is something I have never thought about. I don't know what makes me latch onto a character or a pairing. But I guess what almost all of my ships have in common is that they are not canon.

15. What you absolutely hate in a ship?

Hmmmm talking about canon ships, unneccessary drama to prolong a drama series. In fanfic I do love missunderstandings that initially prevent them from getting together. I guess I do hate missunderstandings that cause trouble in a relationship that is already there? I like the drama to come from the outside, not from the ship, I guess.

2. Are there any popular fandom OTPs you only BroTP?

HONESTLY ... i don't really enjoy shadowsight x sunbeam that much. or jayfeather x poppyfrost or jay x briarlight. or like. jayfeather x half moon. ALSO i cannot stand squirrelflight x crowfeather i am SORRY i just. aough.... eughgh...

7. Is there anything you used to like but can’t stand now?

i cannot stand. like. a good 70% of the ppl in this fandom (like MOST popular artists or popular People in the fandom). just beacuse i feel like ever since a starless clan came out everyone is divided into "nightheart is a sexist transphobic misogynist abuser who hates women" (the majority of people) and "nightheart isn't that bad actually" (aka the people who get sent death threats over liking a fictional cat character and get called misogynists for liking said character). like im sory i really dont have better words to say but like . i cannot stand those people

as for like actual wc stuff? aside from the fandom? i also used to like . firestar x cinderpelt and firestar x spottedleaf and just absolutely HATED firestar x sandstorm. my itty bity 9 year old brain couldnt comprehend the fact that sandstorm spend the whole series bullying him only to suddenly b like "firestar i love u !!!!!!!!" so i was so mad n thought he shouldve been with cinderpelt insetad. ofc i dont Agree with any of thos opinions now but yeah <3

anyways my Unpopular Opinion is that uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh nightheart is not that bad actually . he's just Like That. i feel like people realy donot get that he's SUPPOSED to come off as a spoiled brat and he's SUPPOSED to come off as an asshole. its On Purpose. i feel like people also don't understand that protagonists donot have to be, like, good people. the protagonist does not have to be Positive or a Good Person or a Hero. the protagonist is just the guy the story is about. nightheart is a fucked up stinky spoiled little brat but yk what. i love him for that <3

you have to pronounce the name like how you say Quartz first, but without the “z” at the end, and then pronounce it with “tavia” part in Octavia’s name.

the fusion that is Quartavia, is Owl Demon in appearance, and they have four eyes and like Stevonnie and Rainbow 2.0., she only have two arms.

Quartavia has both Steven and Octavia’s powers, meaning that Quartavia is able to use healing magic and even make plants form into plant versions of themself.

another power that Quartavia could of gotten from Steven, is the super speed and being able to form a bubble around herself and even others.

the other powers that Quartavia could of ended up getting would be the Pink Mad Form, which knowing this, Quartavia could try to do some meditation to calm themself so not to cause any damage.

Quartavia is a Crossover fusion between Steven and Octavia, and is in a way a Crossover Ship between the two, so they are Fanon and Not Canon.

I can’t help but think that Stella would scream at them to unfuse or else.

not sure how Stolas would feel about Quartavia, who is made up of half of his daughter and the other half being a half-human/half-gem boy.

if I decide to, maybe I will draw Quartavia again.

anyway hope some who are fans of both shows, like this Crossover Ship & Fusion that has to do with Steven and Octavia.

well not everyone has to like the ship, and some can just like the idea of those two fusing, maybe in a platonic ship/friend zone way.

I guess Quartavia could be seen as a platonic or romantic fusion type ship.

not all ships are the romantic type, and there are different types...

of course with the different types you can’t use “I ship it” because people will get the wrong idea, so you have to use words like “I sib it” for platonic family like love like siblings, and Family, and for family you use “I fam it”

you NEVER use the “I ship it” that is only for the romantic ships, if you use it for the non-romantic ships, people will get the wrong idea.

Loona and Octavia is the “I sib it” type, maybe they will from a type of sisterly bond if they appear in more episodes together.

we don’t know if they will form a deeper bond but fans can only theorize.

but if Octavia and Steven did date, even if it is just in a Fanon Crossover AU...

and Loona did act like a big sister to Octavia, I think she would threaten Steven in a passive-aggressive way, maybe by saying that if he ever breaks Octavia’s heart, she will make him sorry he ever did.

Ok, I could’ve sworn I was tagged by @aleksandrachaev but now the notification has disappeared? Idk what the hellsite is up to by making me think I have notifications, but I’m going to do this anyway 😂 😂 . I haven’t looked too closely at my stats and everything in a while, so this will be fun!

208,442. Huh. I thought it would be more? Oh well!

3. how many fandoms have you written for and what are they?

Three. One random one shot for each ER and T100. The rest are all AoS!

Actually, wait. Since Kat says (and I agree whole heartedly!) that Black Widow is it’s own fandom, then make that 4! I wrote a one shot of an alternate end credit scene for that movie!

4. what are your top 5 fics by kudos? (I’m not including the ones I have cowritten)

Everything’s Changing 372 Kudos- Talk about a wild idea I had watching a movie from the 90s. Anywayyyy. Philinda and Philindaisy moments. Lots of fluff. (which if you know me, you know I do more angst these days. 😂)

We’ve Come a Long Way from Where We Began 265 kudos - Aww! The first thing I ever wrote! Lots of May and Daisy moments and they work t reunite their team. (But also I now refuse to read this because I can see how much my writing has improved since then, and now I get mad at previous me 😂)

A Bad *Axe* Birthday 177 Kudos- May gives Daisy an axe for her birthday, and teaches her to throw it. Because to quote Rosa Diaz from B99 “What kind of woman doesn’t have an axe?”

I Took You for Granted 150 Kudos- TBH, I’m surprised this one was this high? It’s not one of the better things I’ve written tbh. But it’s May and Daisy, in season 7, and God knows they needed more scenes together, so maybe that’s why this one is on the list.

*cackles* Ummmm. I have several, but I think the angstiest would be The Unimaginable. Poor May just lost everyone in this fic.

Philindaaaaaaa. I have way too many feels about those two.

14. what’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

Anything that’s in my old laptop. I got a new computer about 6 months ago, and any of my WIPs that somehow didn’t transfer over will probably never be finished. 😔

15. what are your writing strengths?

Angst! Also fluff (if I’m in the right mood). Sometimes humor! (again, depends on the mood.)

16. what are your writing weaknesses?

Feels I think? Sometimes I just write and then I go back to read it later and the dialogue in the feels particularly cringey. Also, I have a habit of using my southern slang in random places if I’m writing while tired, so I try to double check that. 😂

17. what are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

Personally, I’ve only done it a couple of times, and for very short sentences or phrases because I don’t want to accidentally say something wrong and make a mess of things! I sadly only speak English with a few words of Spanish and Italian thrown in for funsies. Still waiting on a fic where I can randomly throw in a word or two in Italian.

18. what was the first fandom you wrote for?

Agents of Shield I believe! Unless you count the poorly written story I practically copied from an episode of Desperate Housewives that I was probably way too young to be watching. I wrote with gel pen on some loose leaf paper and then put into a pronged folder. I was maybe... 12? Mayyyyybe 13?

19. what’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

It’s like choosing my favorite child! (Not that I have children, but I do have 4 pets and I can easily tell you who my favorite pet is. 😂)

Hands down, I think my favorite has to be It’s Only a Matter of Time. I wrote a spec fic before the AoS finale where the team splits up across time, and I sobbed so hard while writing it!

Also I really really like The Unimaginable listed above with the angsty ending!

The photo set you reblogged of Yusuf and Niccolo helping throughout time just filled me with so many happy feels and it made me realize that it seems so common in media with immortal couples that they take breaks from each other and reconnect after a few decades. Which is a great trope but seeing these two that seems to have been attached at the hip since the day they met just fills me with all the heart eyes.

(I haven't read your fanfics for them yet. I know I'm a bad fan but if it helps I havent been able to read anything since all this started but while writing this ask I got the feeling that all this rambling I spewed out is a big theme)

Hush. Bad fan nothing. We all are coping with this stupid, awful year in different ways, some of us by escaping into fandom and some of us being unable to engage with it and some of us doing both or anything else. You certainly don’t owe me or anyone any obligation to interact with our content, fic or otherwise. So just to have that there on the top. You’re good, hun. :)

ANYWAY, thank you for giving me a chance to meta a bit on the boys and their relationship and to have a window into what my brain looks like pretty much 24/7 these days. (I blame them.) I keep thinking about all the ways this couple is depicted in the TOG film and how lovely it was and how unusual it is for me to have an OTP where I actually love them in canon and don’t need to violently disavow it in order to create AU fan content with just the characters. (See: Timeless, Game of Thrones, pretty much any show I’ve hyperfixated on at some point.) I love AUs anyway, because that’s the way my brain works, but the fact that I can also enjoy canon just as much is rare for me and for a lot of us. I saw a post somewhere remarking on how the fanfic for Joe/Nicky isn’t fixing anything, which is usually the point of transformative fanworks: we take something that canon atrociously fucked up and fix it. But in this case, all our interpretations are based on actually appreciating the way they’re presented in canon and wanting to enjoy that and uphold it, and that -- especially with a couple like this one -- is shocking??

Like. Despite my historian gripes about the occasionally incongruous details for their graphic-novel backstories (which are the only things I HAVE fixed in my fics), I’m just... deeply appreciative of the care which everyone, writers and actors and all else, put into depicting Joe and Nicky and their relationship. And god YES, one of the things I love the absolute MOST is that they’re a loving, faithful, committed, happy married queer couple over centuries, and that seems to be the case for as long as they’ve known each other/ever since they got together. (See Booker’s “you and Nicky always had each other.”) These fools can’t sleep apart from each other even when they’re stuck on a freight train in the middle of nowhere, they flirt like teenagers at dinnertime and even when they’re strapped to gurneys in a mad-scientist laboratory, they make out to enrage bad guys and also because they’re just still that goddamn into each other after all this time.

I think it was Marwan Kenzari who pointed out that there’s simply no way to truly state the depth of their knowledge and devotion and commitment to each other. They’re 950 years old. They have known each other since they were in their thirties; they’ve been husbands for literal centuries. There is no way anyone else in the world could possibly come close to replicating the kind of bond they have with each other, and neither of them have ever had any inclination to look, because why would they? Especially with the fact that queer couples in media, even otherwise sympathetically portrayed ones, often have Drama and Third Parties and Promiscuity and whatever else (because of the tiresome old canard that Gays Equal Hypersexualized!), and Joe and Nicky don’t need or want ANY of that. There’s no urge to make their relationship a cheap source of soap-opera conflict. It’s the rock and the center and the core of both of their lives, and everything they do stems from that.

There have been some great metas/comments on how neither Joe and Nicky are sexualized, they dress like stay-at-home dads during quarantine (Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli are both objectively gorgeous men, and they’re out there looking like that, god bless), and the viewer is never invited to goggle at or fetishize their relationship. There are no leering or exploitative camera angles on anyone, and their expressions of love aren’t posed or intended to titillate the audience, they’re just solidly embodied and natural and lived in. It’s never bothered to be stated clunkily in dialogue that they’re a couple; we just see them exchanging looks and smiles in the early part of the film, and then we see them spooning on the train after the mission in Sudan, which confirms it.

At every turn, the narrative celebrates the kindness and love shared by the Immortal Family, the individual characters, and Joe and Nicky, especially and explicitly in queer form. The villains of the film are also defined by how they react negatively to that love. @viridianpanther had a great meta on how Keane as a villain is especially set up to menace Joe and Nicky as the narrative representation of toxic masculinity, aggressive heterosexuality, and the usual “Kill Your Gays” trope that we’ve all come to wearily expect. But instead, after that scene where Joe and Nicky fight Keane, Nicky is shot and comes back to life in Joe’s arms rather than dying permanently like we probably all momentarily expected, and then Joe gets to FUCKIN’ BREAK THE NECK of the guy who enacted that violence.... good GOD. The first time I watched it, I almost couldn’t believe it was happening. (This goes for the whole film, but especially that scene.) Like... when do we get that?? When do we EVER get that???

Obviously, there are so many stereotypes, whether visually or in behavior or character traits, that could have been assigned to a gay Italian character (excessively dramatic, effeminate, fashionable, etc) or a gay Arabic/Muslim character (explicitly announcing He’s Not Like Those Muslims, having to actively reject his heritage to make him more palatable to westerners, being tormented over being gay, etc) and Joe and Nicky subscribe to none of those. I get very emotional about Joe referring to Nicky as the moon when he is lost during the truck scene partly because it’s SUCH a common motif in Arabic love poetry. To call someone your “moon” is a beautiful way to say they’re the light of your life, and since the Islamic calendar is obviously lunar and the holidays, months, and observances, are set by the phases of the moon, this also has a deeper religious significance.

I don’t know for sure if they did that on purpose, but it it’s a lovely and subtle way of showing us how Joe clearly doesn’t have an issue with being both queer AND Muslim, and is able to draw on both facets of that identity in a way that a lesser narrative would have denied him. And that is just really wonderful. Yes, we’re seeing these characters when they’ve had centuries to settle into themselves, but there are plenty of writers who would have forced those conflicts artificially to the surface, rather than letting them be long in the past. It’s the same way when you watch a film set in the medieval era, it wants you to know that it Is Set In The Medieval Era. Cue the filth, misogyny, racism, violence, etc! Rather than it being a lived-in reality, it has to be jarringly drawn attention to, and I’m just so glad they didn’t do that with Joe and Nicky. And for them to have met in the crusades and fallen in love??! Come on. That’s just rude. Rude to me, personally.

Anyway, this was a rather long-winded and feelsy way of saying that these characters are constructed, acted, and written organically in such a way that you hate to even THINK of them being separated, and it’s not because they can’t function without each other, but because they are two halves of a whole. We also see that the characters themselves can’t stand being forced apart: Joe’s freakout in the truck scene when Nicky briefly won’t wake up, Nicky making sure to tell Joe that he’s glad he’s awake in the lab, the whole post-Keane fight scene that I talked about above, the way Nicky fights ferociously to get to Joe when Merrick’s stabbing him, etc. For that to be given to the queer couple, where the strength of their love and devotion is reinforced as one of the emotional goals of the story, and for that queer couple to be written in the way that Joe and Nicky are, both individually and as a unit, is just so very rare.

Because yes, there’s plenty of drama and angst and pain in their lives, but there’s none at all in their relationship, and that’s what fans keep telling TV writers the whole time: they WANT to see the couple confront things as a unit, rather than being kept on tenterhooks the whole time and forced to go through manufactured or artificial drama. It would feel especially wrong for Joe and Nicky, who have known and loved each other for 900 years. The fact that their respective actors also put so much care and love into them is very obvious, and makes me feel even luckier that they’re played by people who clearly get them and honor them and know what they’re doing.

Basically: of course Joe and Nicky have been with each other the whole time, and of course we’re all drowning in feelings over it, and I feel very blessed that this ship exists, and I very much need the sequel ASAP. Thanks.

Character ask: Donkeyskin/All-Kinds-of-Fur

Favorite thing about them: Her cunning, which is a trait we don’t often associate with fairy tale princesses. In the Grimms’ version in particular, she comes up with the idea to demand seemingly-impossible dresses and a seemingly-impossible coat before she’ll agree to marry her father, and she explicitly reaches out to the Young King she loves by slipping the three golden charms into his soup. Perrault’s version gives less emphasis to this side of her by having a Fairy Godmother instruct her to demand the dresses and donkey skin, and by leaving it ambiguous whether she drops the ring into the cake batter on purpose or by accident, but it’s still present – Perrault’s narrator voice clearly prefers to think the ring-dropping was on purpose. If not for the incest element, I think this would be a very popular alternative to Cinderella for modern readers, because the heroine wins her happy ending through her own guile and determination rather than having it magically handed to her.

Least favorite thing about them: That she has to be threatened with incest by her father, poor thing. Not only that, but both Perrault and the Grimms seem almost to want to excuse her father’s behavior, especially Perrault, who emphasizes at the beginning that he was a good, beloved king, just driven temporarily mad by the loss of his wife, and brings him back to reconcile with his newlywed daughter in the end. In both versions, the blame is shifted onto her mother for having made the King promise on her deathbed to only marry a woman more beautiful than herself (Perrault) or with hair as golden as her own (the Grimms). Why do that?

My personal favorite of the retellings I’ve found so far is the version from the Grimm’s Fairy Tale Classics anime, titled The Coat of Many Colors. It portrays the King’s pursuit of his daughter as truly terrifying madness and doesn’t gloss over its effect on her, but portrays her with obvious PTSD throughout the story. This becomes the reason why she runs away from the ball each night instead of revealing her royal identity and marrying the Prince right away, which the Grimms’ version doesn’t explain. Each night, the Prince’s demonstrations of love for her trigger a flashback to her father’s crazed advances and cause her to panic. But in the end she finally manages to express her own love for him and find healing. Nor is there any attempt to redeem the King, as while chasing his daughter at the beginning he accidentally sets his castle on fire, and it’s implied that he dies in the blaze before the story proper even starts.

Three things I have in common with them:

*I’m a good cook. (The Grimms’ version makes me want to try making German bread soup!)

*I like parties and elegant dresses.

*I’d rather be a scullery maid than marry my father.

Three things I don’t have in common with them:

*I’m not blonde.

*I’m not royalty.

*I’m probably nowhere near as cunning as she is.

Favorite line: "Before I fulfill your wish, I must have three dresses: one as golden as the sun, one as silver as the moon, and one that glistens like the stars. Further, I must have a cloak put together from a thousand kinds of pelts and fur. Every animal in your kingdom must contribute a piece of its skin for it."

brOTP: Her Fairy Godmother in Donkeyskin, and the kind old Nurse and Cook from Charlotte Huck’s retelling Princess Furball, who serve as her childhood parental figures and teach her the skills she uses later. In crossover-land, I imagine she would also be good friends with Cinderella.

OTP: The Prince from Donkeyskin and Prince Alexander from the Grimm’s Fairy Tale Classics adaptation, The Coat of Many Colors. I’m not so fond of the Young King from All-Kinds-of-Fur, though. The final scene where he sees the ring he slipped onto her finger, then grasps her hand, refuses to let her flee and rips off her fur coat to reveal the ballgown underneath it feels so rough and violating. Worse, in the original 1812 edition of the story, we’re told that as a servant, besides her work in the kitchen, she had to take off the Young King’s boots every night and afterwards he always threw them at her head. I’m glad that the Grimms cut that part from their later editions, and that the Grimm’s Fairy Tale Classics version changes the story to have him be always be kind to her and to make the scene where he recognizes and unmasks her much more tender and comforting on his part.

nOTP: Her father.

Random headcanon: Her deceased mother was the title character from The Goose Girl – another fairy tale princess famous for her beautiful golden hair.

(In the past I’ve toyed with the idea of her mother having been Rapunzel, but now I’ve decided against it. In the first place, All-Kinds-of-Fur has no twin brother, and secondly, I don’t want to imagine Rapunzel’s Prince becoming an incestuous creep in his old age. But the Prince in The Goose Girl is just a blank-slate minor character, so the thought of his corruption I can accept.)

Unpopular opinion: I think both Donkeyskin and All-Kinds-of-Fur are intriguing yet flawed stories and I think the best version would combine aspects of both. As a whole, it would probably resemble All-Kinds-of-Fur more closely than Donkeyskin. None of Perrault’s efforts to soft-pedal the incestuous King, no Fairy Godmother but instead a clever princess who concocts her outrageous clothing requests and then her escape plan herself, and I would definitely include the Grimms’ three Cinderella-like balls too, rather than Perrault’s choice to only have the Prince glimpse the heroine trying on her gowns through the keyhole of her room. But I might be tempted to follow Perrault’s route of having the heroine work on a farm in the royal family’s employ instead of at the palace itself – interesting though it is to have her work at the palace right under her future husband’s nose, having her work elsewhere means he’s in no way complicit in her abuse, whether directly as in the Grimms’ 1812 version or by inaction. I also prefer Perrault’s Cinderella-like search for the lady whose finger fits the ring (which, however, would definitely be slipped into the soup or cake on purpose), as opposed to the more uncomfortable way All-Kinds-of-Fur’s identity is revealed. As for whether she’d wear a magic donkey’s skin or a patchwork fur coat, I lean toward the patchwork fur coat, but it doesn’t make a big difference to me.

By the way, I think it’s interesting that the anime calls the story The Coat of Many Colors. Of all the fairy tale princesses, Donkeyskin/All-Kinds-of-Fur probably does most resemble Joseph, son of Jacob, from the Bible. Like Joseph, she’s betrayed by family, driven from her homeland and reduced to servitude, but eventually she rises to high status, partly through luck and virtue but also through cleverness. An interpretation I once read of the Joseph story in a book that analyzed the Bible from an LGBT+ perspective made the parallels with this fairy tale seem especially strong, as it interpreted Jacob’s intense love for his son as having incestuous overtones and interpreted Joseph’s becoming co-ruler with the Pharaoh of Egypt as his becoming the Pharaoh’s spouse in all but name. Although that’s not a widely-accepted reading of that Bible story.
