"You've been quiet tonight", Peter noted, staring up at the sunset from his spot on the hill.
Lily took a long drawl of their shared joint before slowly replying.
"I think I'm in love with James."
Peter turned to her.
Lily glanced to him, passing him the joint, "Sorry."
"Nah, don't worry about it", He shrugged, "Inevitable really."
She nodded before turning back to the sky, "Think I'll ask him out."
"Oh, he'll be unbearably happy."
Peter stumped the joint out on the ground and sat back up, glancing to the castle in the distance.
"Should probably get going then, huh?"
Lily nodded, accepting his hand up, and brushed her skirt off.
She grabbed his arm when he started to walk, "Will you be alright about it? About me and James?"
Peter nodded, wrapping his arm around her waist, "Course, I will. He's been so mature lately, anyway, it's sickening. Maybe I'll go and fall in love with Sirius instead- He's still immature and childish and fun."
"James is still fun", Lily huffed with a laugh.
"Nah", Peter lied, "I need someone who'll let me hex Pince when she's pissing me off, not someone who stops me and gives me a lesson about respect and growing up."
Lily turned to him, "He did that?"
Peter snorted, "Yep. Went on a whole rant about how Pince is just trying to do her job and doesn't deserve to have an enlarged head, no matter how cleverly metaphorical it was going to be. And then he gave me a sticker of a golden snitch when I promised I wouldn't go through with it."
Lily laughed with absolute delight, "I think this is making me more attracted to him."

After the war, when everyone who's left starts to settle back down, Lily takes up her potions experiments again.
Regulus helps. He hates to do nothing and there's a whole lot of nothing to do now that Riddle is defeated, for him at least, he didnt make any plans for after, didn't expect there to be one.
He knows she used to have a different partner for this, one who knew far better what he was doing with a cauldron, who had a natural instinct for it that Regulus himself lacks. Severus was a real talent, he and Lily basically rewrote the NEWT textbook when they were still OWL students. Regulus only got an O in his OWL by memorising the textbook and his NEWTs aren't worth talking about. (He was busy, okay? There was another potion to deal with.)
Its not the first time he's been the lesser replacement in the eyes of someone he cares about, only there to fill the position because he was better behaved.
Lily, he thinks, resents this less than his mother did.
He's definitely more assistant than partner, and she seems to get more stuck than she's accustomed to, now that she's carrying almost all the weight of innovation and not just half. But all her disappointment seems focused far away, on someone else, and maybe occasionally on herself for missing that someone else. She's happy enough with what Regulus does, his focus and precision and patience, which the rest of her friends seem to lack.
For the first time, his effort seems like the important thing, not his talent but how he tries to get it right, the potion and the good behaviour both. That's never really happened before. He finds he doesn't mind either, that he's not The Best. He's just alright. He doesn't know what to with that.

my autistic sirius and reg hc made me think about how regulus would be like. extremely into lists and schedules and make one for everything he needs to do for every day and he has to follow it exactly. whereas sirius would hate lists and schedules. abhors them.
which means when they were kids and actually hung out, at least a little, regulus would be there with his schedule for the day trying and failing to get sirius to follow it because yesterday sirius said they would play the piano together so regulus slotted that activity down for 11am but now its 11:05 and sirius doesn't want to because he's just noticed that one of the chairs in the parlour is wonky so now he has to check all the chairs and take the wonky ones up to his room and take them apart and use the wood to make a pirate ship.
