how does fanon get Shakarian wrong? 👀👀

I'm gonna start off by saying that I'm a turianfucker too and turians are hot and I get the thirst I get y'all

BUT

too many people are attracted to turians and want a turian romance so badly that they ignore Garrus's entire character for the sake of getting a turian romance and just basically strip him down to nothing but his species. People who are into turians and have a primal kink or something, which like. I also get I'm a monsterfucker too that's fun. are also projecting too much of that kink onto turians and Garrus specifically because Garrus is just unlucky enough to be the romance option. People write a generic alien/human relationship while ignoring most of what the Shakarian dynamic looks like in canon because. Well I actually don't know why. But the amount of turian/human fics, and yes, Shakarian too, that include some kind of "turians are a bit feral or actually aggressive/possessive" take is terrifying. Have we played the same games? Turians are literally described over and over as uptight having a stick in their ass sticklers for the rules. Garrus is an awkward nerd who doesn't know how to flirt with his girlfriend. Even when he he does the evil he does it in the most rule-obedient way possible. He's a mess and he relies on Shepard a bit too much especially in the first two games. This man is NOT the growly dominant alien character insert you want him to be I'm sorry. Turians have 15,000 more years of civilisation than humans. They are not going to be feral creatures just because they have sharper teeth. The human would be the primitive uncivilised alien in a turian/human relationship if you need someone to fill that role (also, why would you?).

Not to mention Shepard being treated as a self-insert which is. well it is a lot more forgivable in my eyes, but even as an RPG PC, Shepard still has a lot of distinct character. I think this is the first time since playing The Walking Dead that I've seen a player character with such a strong personality despite the genre forcing her to be different things.

To be fair I think a lot of the problems with fanon characterization of not only Shakarian but pretty much everyone who gets commonly mischaracterized (look at the woobification of Tali) could be fixed by regularly checking back in with the source material instead of, which I understand and can also be guilty of sometimes, immersing yourself in more and more layers of fanfic until you can't tell apart the fanon Shakarian from the canon Shakarian.

Dishonourable mentions (things that aren't common bad fandom practice but bother me personally): sub Shepard and actually worse yet dom Garrus, any AU where Garrus is a human (like??? lmao. his entire personality and conflict is driven by him being a turian, that is so central to his character that I can't imagine why you would take that away and think that's the same person), Shakarian retiring to the beach (Garrus said tropical. He didn't say beach. He hates swimming he would drown save him)

Also obviously this should go without saying, but there are TONS of great fanfics about Shakarian out there. This is just a list of what people get wrong that I wrote in like ten minutes on my phone sitting on the floor in my kitchen. It's not some magic truth scroll of fandom transgressions. Also obviously everyone is free to interpret fictional characters however they want even if it's different from the source material. Sometimes ignoring canon is better, trust me. Do whatever you want and don't let me spoil your fandom experience for you.

But yeah

TL;DR: I think that Shakarian and Garrus in particular suffers a lot from Garrus being the only turian romance in the games.

ive had concepts for this in my draft for a while but i finished some of it and i can finally post the sketches i made of grim and yuu

yes i know yuu looks like wednesday, i didn't realize until i'd actually watched it alsjhdg

basically i think people don't draw enough connections between the overblotting in twisted wonderland and the blot in epic mickey, the main villain's name is literally just blot, so i made an au inspired off the way blot seems to infect and spreads to the entirety of wasteland as opposed to just the characters like in twst

Overblot Apocalypse AU

In which overblotting is contagious and Twisted Wonderland suffers an outbreak prior to Yuu's arrival, leading to the mirror to summon someone from a magicless world in hopes of finding someone immune to blot. Yuu just happens to be the unlucky one that was chosen at random.

The magic mirror has been destroyed in the chaos that overtook the outbreak during its early stages, it's nothing but shards now with very little magic. It used what it had left to summon Yuu in hopes of ending the outbreak. It was never something that would be confirmed to help, more of a "hope for a miracle" kind of risk, as the mirror didn't know if whoever they brought would truly be immune.

Now, the magic mirror is wrapped in cloth and kept in Yuu's pocket. It essentially acts as a sort of sentient smartphone, communicating with Yuu regularly and helping them survive this new world such as explaining foods, environments, etc.

There is nothing special or particularly noteworthy about Yuu. They remain magicless with no special abilites. They weren't chosen for a higher reason or to fulfill some kind of ancient prophecy, they're just a kid that got the short end of the stick and got isekai'd to Twisted Wonderland because the magic mirror got desperate.

Overblot spreads by connecting to others via negative emotions and magic fatique. The main emotion witnessed is fear but those like Riddle and Leona were infected through their anger.

Grim managed to evade overblotting because at this point in time he does not have a magestone that helps him concentrate magic so he doesn't use it often enough to get infected and his catlike tendencies make him nimble and hard for any blot to reach him. However, he still has had run ins with those that have overblotted, such as Riddle, who ended up taking part of his tail when he attacked Grim.

NRC is easily the most dangerous area in Twisted Wonderland simply because of the sheer amount of overblots roaming its grounds. Which kind of sucks, because that's where Yuu is originally summoned. They steal a bunch of stuff like a baseball bat and hightail it out as soon as they can.

Same as canon, Yuu is able to end someone's overblot if they can wear them down enough. They're typically the only one that gets close to actually hit someone because they're the only one safe from infection, this often results in scars, but Grim and other allies such as Ace and Deuce definitely heavy hit with magic from a distance.

i have a lot more for this in my drafts such as details on the housewardens and other characters but i'm still working on finalizing those akjsdv

further public library of ruina rambles (i've got plenty of time to think about this shit and new material every workday):

it starts when a fairly high-ranking city official stumbles across her when she's just barely started, someone powerful enough to make it very clear the city could wreck angela's shit at this stage if they chose to. but you know, they say instead, it's interesting that this is a library. actually by law we're supposed to have a public library, but we haven't managed to keep one open in quite some time. if you took on the role, we might be persuaded to ignore these... irregularities. what do you say? angela knows full well this is a trap, but doesn't have much choice if she wants to live. also, a would roll over in his grave, not that she thinks about that or anything.

the abnormalities are still there. in fact they're still booked and put on the shelf where anybody can find them. who knows, maybe they were looking for a pug monster.

angela tosses any measured plan she had to wake up the librarians directly out the window within a week, they're all out by the time roland shows up. she takes a management role and does not look back. do not ever call her 'manager', though.

all the librarians technically have their own roles, though they can also get pulled into whatever is needed at any time; in irl libraryland, this is known as the "other duties as assigned" curse.

angela is still trying to reclaim the light, but due to the public libraries act, she can't book anybody unless they actively attack staff, guests, or library property while in the library itself. this throws more of a wrench into her plans than she expected but still happens with depressing frequency.

as a result of the vast amounts of emotional stress and instability added by all this, librarian meltdowns are back. which generally trigger angela because a) everything and b) excuse me, you dare pull your fucking bullshit for the eleven billionth time WHEN MY SUFFERING IS RIGHT HERE REEEEE. so it turns into a giant 3-way fight between librarian, angela, and team could we maybe not die today tyvm. they all know approximately half of each other's buttons (and think they know 3/4), it's a giant clusterfuck but everyone lives and maybe at least some of them learn something.

roland figures out like the equivalent of halfway through something that was really just as true in canon: he can't top this. none of his plans were truly worse than this garbage fire. and now he's trapped in it too. his mental breakdown is slow and inexorable.

the irl public libraries in general... are desperate to fill all the gaps and cracks in the infrastructure they see. we do all want that one perfect book. the answer to the question. what that book with the blue cover was. to be a place where kids can run screaming freely and people can study in quiet. to give mittens to the cold and find housing for the lost. we want that one perfect answer. it doesn't exist. it can't, it isn't possible. the book you loved in childhood won't read the same as an adult. the children who can't keep quiet will hurt the children who can't stand noise. you can't have both the drug dealers and the people trying to get clean, the marginalized and the bigots, all equally welcome. there is no one perfect book. so what i wonder is... what happens if you stop looking. if you stop trying to be everything, and be what you are without regrets. i suspect that what you are (that "just a library") is actually quite enough, and if you stop focusing on doing more than you can, you'll find that around and within you are the answers you actually need. this is both literal, a metaphor, a political statement, and a statement of the theme/endgame of the AU.

things that piss me off about dabi and fans’ reactions to this arc:

-Dabi is definitely, absolutely not justified in going after Shouto (who deserves none of this!! this boy deserves only love and support and some gotdamned therapy) ima just say that now.

-It’s also shitty of Dabi to say he didn’t care if Natsuo was hurt/killed.

-The canon characterization may very well be Dabi is so far down the path of revenge and has spent so long suffering alone away from his family members that he no longer cares for them/feels anything and is willing to proceed with plans to hurt Endeavor even if they are caught in the crossfire. However, I also feel it’s worth mentioning that right now, he very much seems to be caught up in a manic episode/meltdown/basically losing his shit. Think about it- he’s spent however many years plotting this moment and his chance to get revenge on his father and expose him to the world is finally here, and I think the likelihood that he’s saying whatever shit he thinks will hurt everyone the most is likely. That, or he’s so caught up in the mania he’s just lashing out at fucking everything. I think to some extent he means it, because he’s shown signs of being severely depressed and there’s a numbness that comes with that, but I also think deep down there is still some care there, even if small, or at least some acknowledgment that the other members of his family aren’t the main target and source of his suffering. He literally hasn’t seen them in years and it’s easy to say ‘I don’t care’ when it’s not to their faces. (Why send a tape specifically to Rei and keep track of her? Why not hurt Shouto at the summer camp when he so easily could have?) I think it’s also clear he didn’t mean to kill Endeavor with the previous Nomu attacks, but wanted him to succeed (in a ‘Build him up bigger so when I bring him down he falls even harder’ type of way. After all, Dabi obviously wanted to be the one to take down Endeavor, not a random Nomu.) Again, shitty he didn’t care that Natsuo/Shouto got caught up in it, but I think he didn’t think Natsuo would die due to Endeavor saving him. (Again, that doesn’t justify it, and is some twisted logic, but this is complicated.)

-I want to make very clear I’m not absolving Dabi of his actions, but as an abuse victim and someone who’s intimately familiar with familial abuse, his actual feelings do not make him a bad person and are actually more common than you’d think if you’ve never experienced abuse. When you’re suffering that kind of trauma for so long, you lash out at and feel angry at other people in the household, even other targets of abuse, because your abuser fucks you all up so bad and turns you against each other (even if not intentionally). It becomes a sick competition for attention even from a person who’s horrible and terrible. Dabi undoubtedly felt like he’d been thrown away and jealous of Shouto, the ‘perfect child’ Endeavor finally succeeded in getting (again, this doesn’t excuse him actually hating Shouto, but I can see why he might feel bitter). In a perfect world he would’ve dealt with those feelings with therapy and realized Shouto was just as much a victim and not murder attempts, but this is bnha lmao. Him wanting to hurt Shouto- a fucked up urge, but in a trauma-inducing environment as a mentally ill teenager, you can understand why he felt it. Acting on it is what’s truly fucked up. I also find it unlikely he doesn’t care for Natsuo at all. Natsuo, who he went to specifically for comfort for his whole childhood, not even his mother but his brother?

-At first glance, it may seem many “fanon” interpretations of Dabi are now ‘invalid’ or whatever but I disagree. Sure, we do know that he wasn’t secretly skulking about watching out for his siblings from the shadows- clearly. But narratives that involve him reconnecting with his siblings, remembering or learning to care for them again, realizing he’s hurting them and he isn’t the only one with trauma, reconnecting with his want to protect them as his family, etc. still make sense. People are not static. They still hold the capacity for change and healing given the proper circumstances. Most fanfic are AUs, given they don’t follow canon exactly and word for word, and characters can make different decisions and feel differently if different events happen. Even if you do want to write a very different characterization for Dabi, that’s fine, especially if bnha ultimately ends up doing the whole Todoroki narrative dirty.

-In conclusion: yes, currently Dabi is acting a madman and doing some very reprehensible things. He is a severely traumatized individual who grew up in a home involving copious amounts of violence. However, I do not think the point of all this family drama is just to say “fuck it, Touya’s dead now he was too far gone whoops! But heroes are good anyway!” I think it’s likely we’ll get some scene with him arrested and being confronted by Rei or Natsuo or something along those lines and see some regret. (Why spend so much time on this arc and show their reactions if they aren’t going to be involved at all?) Simultaneously, it’s also possible the story will go the “he’s too far gone” route and basically have him end up as a mirror of Endeavor: so obsessed with his own trauma he threw his own family under the bus for his own revenge plan. While possible, I think that’s a shitty and lazy way to go and disrespectful to Touya himself as an abuse survivor. He is definitely extremely deep in his revenge right now, but I do not want that to be the end of his character.

-I want Dabi to have to face up to his own actions. I want him to realize he fucked up and hurt people he shouldn’t have. I don’t think we’ll get some mushy apology montage, but we have not once seen all the Todoroki siblings together at one time, and I want Dabi to have to deal with the repercussions of seeing his family again and realizing oh, they were never the ones I should have hurt, and I don’t think he’s too far gone to do that.

-I think it’ll be really shitty if Dabi, an abuse survivor, is ultimately depicted as the insane lunatic that needs to be put down and has no chance for any kind of redemption while his abuser who bought his wife for eugenics and neglected/abused his entire family gets to walk free with a shitty redemption arc. Don’t get me wrong, I’m aware Dabi is a villain and as such is going to be on the losing side in a story where heroes win (I mean, it’s technically all a flashback from number one hero Deku) but he still has very valid points about hero society and how fucked up Endeavor truly was, and throwing it all away would be such a cop out. If bnha does truly go with the most insulting route for Dabi I feel it shows a lack of understanding for abuse and abuse survivors and fanfic authors are justified in ignoring and changing that for fics, especially if they’re abuse survivors themselves. I guarantee they’ll write better narratives about abuse lmao.

-Lastly: Dabi is a morally grey character. He’s a villain. But people who like his character or want to look at the why and how of his actions in a nuanced way are not just ‘dumb villain stans’ or whatever weird shit the bnha fandom has come up with. We just want this narrative to actually make some goddamned sense. Dabi’s actions are not all justified but do make sense in the context of his backstory and motivations and current mental state, I just hope to god hori doesn’t ruin it completely from here.

Edit: this post is also highly likely imo and also explains Dabi’s behavior (but as a reminder for those who don’t read closely, explaining something is not the same thing as justifying it.) “I can’t feel anything anymore” is a hallmark of being depressed/suicidal and his supposedly not caring for his siblings anymore most likely has to do more with his own suicidal state than aggression towards them. Dabi acting as manic as he has these last few chapters makes sense if he isn’t planning on living.

Note: yes, I missed prime pun opportunity to write ‘the boyz’ in the title. Anyway, I’ll be general enough to not include any real-life names and music, but I’ll get specific about other details. (Besides, if you squint real close you can see where I got my references from.) I’m thinking of a follow-up part, but we’ll see. Hope you enjoy!

* These headcanons are detailing each of the boys as a member in a hypothetical idol group, and not that they’re all in the same group.

** For context: the difference between main and lead positions is that main is the position that gets majority of the activity e.g. song, dance, rap, etc. Lead is more of a supporting role, but still important nonetheless.

BAKUGOU KATSUKI

Obviously an all-rounder. He can sing, dance, and rap, though his forte is definitely dancing.

Bakugou obviously has some mad hand-eye coordination if he can play the drums, and I haven’t even brought in his utilizing it through his quirk and fighting talent. He’s also very flexible when twisting through the air and extremely precise with his explosions

Thus, I’d say that his moves are the most on-beat and precise. He’s got very solid moves when dancing; imagine his limbs cutting the air in sharp, refined movements, and his flexibility leads him to be an overall powerful dancer.

Bakugou is a HUGE stickler for technique. Sure, he’s not above improvisation, but technique’s where he excels the most. He’s looking far ahead enough to not want to jeopardize his health by doing some dangerous moves that could potentially hurt his body, so he always takes extra care when going about them, such as taking advanced dance classes.

He works wonderfully as a center, because not only does he have this charisma that makes people unable to look away from him, his perfected balance between his fierce dancing and his emphasis on technique lead him to be a picture of refined strength, and an absolute delight to watch on stage

His facial expressions are definitely the best when he’s performing powerful songs, probably because he’s naturally angry lol. His worst concept has got to be cute, but while he dreads doing it, it’s not like he can’t pull it off. He’s an idol, dammit.

Bakugou’s that one member who wears a headband or bandanna during cutesy performances and sticks with it, because that’s the closest the stylists are ever gonna get to his hair

God forbid if he ever has curly or straight hair

He’s not against dying it though, but he still cares about the repercussions it has on his body, so he tries to refrain from dying it too often. (Which could be inevitable if his managers require him to, I know that. But I’m going to give the boys a little more leeway here to showcase their personalities.)

Anyway, a bandanna suits him just fine, and now he’s the trademark member with the bandanna haha

Some things that don’t change from canon are obviously his schedule. Boy still wakes up at the crack of dawn, probably goes for runs or do sets in the gym, make himself a healthy breakfast, then get down to work

Now I’m conflicted as to what position he would take in a group; I’m leaning towards main dancer

Then again, he IS an all-rounder, so really you could get him to do anything and he’ll be just fine

It’s not in his nature to fail, after all

He can sing, but since his voice is kind of gravelly he’s not the first choice for a main vocal. Strong lead vocal material, I’ll bet, because his voice adds a lot of color and diversity. It’s not something you’d usually hear in a song, that’s why.

He can rap, but again, his voice is gravelly and hard to hear, so I don’t think it would be too good a fit for fast-paced raps. Though, throw him one or two iconic rap lines in his natural ‘I’ll punch you in the face’ tone and you’ve got yourself an icon (and a meme) for days.

I can also see Bakugou being leader of the group, since in canon he’s actually the oldest in class 1-A. One thing though is his outward persona isn’t all that pristine; he has trouble switching gears into idol mode. As we know Bakugou doesn’t lie, regardless of circumstances, and he’s not about to start doing that just to be liked better. If any of these extras are going to be his fans, they’re going to have to recognize real talent, without all the fake smiles.

But because he knows what it could do to the group’s reputation if he came out to look like a big bad bully, he usually keeps his mouth shut during publicity events

He’s probably one of the first idols to have a not-so-sunny media persona, but fans mostly see him as this brooding, sulky kid that’s prepared to put 100% into everything he does

Which is why they still like him

Suffice to say, his fan-base is very similar to the BNHA fandom lmao

Cue all the memes on him being a jerk and everyone liking him anyway, but they know he’s fully committed to the group and wouldn’t want to do anything to risk its image

But over the years, and with the amount of events he’s been involved in, Bakugou’s learnt to let out his true personality one step at a time

He’s considering things carefully because he doesn’t want his fans to be jarred by his personality change all of a sudden, and also because he’s tired keeping up appearances

Jokes on him because the fans already know how he is and are just waiting for him to be more comfortable around the group to showcase his true feelings

And you know what? It sells!

His members also see him as some inspirational figure because his determination and commitment is truly unparalleled

And while he isn’t the easiest to get along with, they know that he’ll do anything within his abilities to push the group to greater heights

While that’s cute and all, it also means they have to suffer at the hands of Bakugou’s tough love. Tough luck

Besides being leader, I could also see him having a hand in producing as well

Remember when I said he was a stickler for technicality? Well, yeah, exactly this

If he feels something isn’t up to par he’d rather do it himself. I think he’d dabble in mixing for a bit and realize he actually has an ear for it, to which he’d then go on to producing whole songs that just awe his members and they’d be like ‘yeah let’s go with this’

And one more thing. Bakugou’s actually got an eye for fashion

Yeah, gripe all you want because all this boy ever wears in the dorms is skull shirts and black tanks but seriously, when he gets down to it, he knows what looks perfect on each member and can make little adjustments to change up a whole style

Overall Bakugou is nothing if not capable. While it means he could definitely go solo at some point, he’s formed bonds with his members and knows he’s grown as a person as a result. And at this point he can only get better

In a leader position, he’s got the charisma, and is not afraid to push for changes if he thinks the status quo isn’t doing enough to ensure the members’ well-being

His weaknesses are obviously teamwork and perfectionism, but he’s been learning how to get along with others better, that it’s not all just a rat race for fame and influence, and he’s able to form some pretty lasting relationships (see: Kirishima)

Not perfectionism, though. He sees it as a strength and not for one second will he compromise. He wants nothing but the best quality, not just for himself, but for the fans

MIDORIYA IZUKU

Looks like the maknae but isn’t. That’s it, that’s the post

He has a really sweet voice so I can see him going for vocals. So imagine when he turns around, holds a mic in his hand and starts RAPPING

You got it, he’s a rapper. Look at the speed that kid goes when he’s mumbling and muttering to himself all the time

Cue Deku’s origin story where he’s mumbling to himself on the street and a talent scout hands him his business card asbfajgfsa

His enunciation is also clear, and his sweet voice makes for a very refreshing rap. That and he also writes his own rap, because if he’s going to be saying anything on that stage, he’s going to want it to mean something.

His raps are always soulful, with hard-hitting lyrics that serve to encourage and motivate anyone who hears and vibes with them.

Basically, his gap moe game is STRONG. Dude be spitting fire up there on stage but once he’s come down, he’s a timid, sweet, shy boi, with overreactions and exaggerations that just make him all the more endearing

He’s also a big fan favorite because he nails every concept well, and has a very down-to-earth personality which he doesn’t hide from the cameras

You want him to act cute and youthful? You’ve got it. You want him to go for something sexy? Um yeah, he’ll have his reservations, but he’ll still do well. You want him to be angry and powerful? The strength in his gaze has got you trembling from the pit.

He’s not just a fan favorite but also that of the staff. Seriously Deku deserves all the love in the world and in this world, he’s going to get it

He’s in the position for main rapper, but I could see him going for lead vocals as well. He’s got a sweet, clear voice that immediately tugs on anyone’s heartstrings the moment they hear it, and he’s usually given more lines in ballads. His vocal range isn’t bad, he can reach moderately high notes, but sometimes his voice undergoes strain. He’s training for that, though!

As for his dance style, Deku probably goes for freestyle! He’s got this easy-going, totally relaxed style going for him that’s full of swag (omg outdated word alert) that makes his movements very smooth. He’s also reasonably flexible, though not as flexible as Bakugou or Todoroki, so he still can pull off certain dance moves.

Unpopular opinion, but it’s Deku, not Todoroki, who looks good in EVERYTHING. Literally his stylist is squealing backstage because they can go ham on dressing him. You could put him in a gold chain and ripped jeans OR an oversized hoodie and rompers, and it’d just go. The only thing is his hair though; he’s thinking of selling it as his charm point (not his freckles!) so he’d prefer if it could stay green. He doesn’t mind if they style it different ways though

The fans would go ballistic if they saw Deku with an undercut, and chances are they’re going to get to see it

He’s definitely one for improvisation! He’s very flexible with these changes, much like how he considers his growth in canon. He’s always looking to try out new styles or moves and see if it fits for him

Besides, I also see him producing! It’s because he’s so immersed in his idol career that he’s always studying new trends on the scene and making them into formulas for the group. He’s also thinking of marketing strategies in his free time

Everyone better be afraid of businessman Deku because he’ll be stealing those bucks from right under your nose

He’s also got mean leadership skills, but I don’t see him in a leader position

Whenever his members realize he’s been overworking, literally everyone turns on him

He used to be the mom figure, but the moment he’s ushered into bed, a cooling pad on his forehead and thermos at his bedside desk, and the members even station one person to be in the living room so if he tries to leave his room to practice by himself they’ll see him

Jokes on them because Deku practices in his room

He practically moves in his sleep as if trying to get the muscle memory down

Precious boy must protecc!

In sum, Deku’s a great teammate to have and a valuable asset to the team

He’s also the best of friends and is never one to let a fellow member down

Probably the first to burst into tears if the group ever disbands

With his talent and fan-base, he could definitely go solo. But more than that, he wants to cherish the time he has with his members and achieve greater milestones with them every day

High-key a visual. I mean, everyone wants to look like him!

Like. Everyone stops to look at him whenever he enters the room. Staff, producers, backstage crew, everyone. Even his members, sometimes.

Man’s just too pretty not to stare at

That's not to say he isn't talented, oh no. He's much like Bakugou, an all-rounder, but he's gone through rigorous training from when he was young to get there

Definitely not because of genes, no offense to Rei

As much as Enji is a major shareholder in the industry, anyone who sees Todoroki strut his stuff and still says he got in because of his father has got to be blind. Or deaf. Or plain stupid.

Sure, he had all that training courtesy of his dad. But the moment he enters as a trainee, it's all him from there and no one else.

He's a lot withdrawn at first, still is, but he's improved a lot from when he first joined. It's because of the support he's gained from both his members and fans that he's able to push himself to be the best version of himself everyday

He definitely doesn't come out and say it, but he's probably the most grateful for his fans. As in his family isn't the only lifeline left for him anymore

Todoroki has an amazing voice; while his speaking voice is low, he can reach higher notes without much difficulty. His tone is deep, somber and perfect for ballads, but the training he's undergone has made his technique immaculate. He's got excellent control, he can do runs and riffs effortlessly and he's even perfected his growl. Fans won't even see it coming

His dancing on the other hand is a lot about technique; but unlike Bakugou, Todoroki probably did classical and contemporary dance training as opposed to hip-hop or popping. Because of that, his movements are smooth and elegant, and he always carries himself with the grace of a dancer

That's not to say he cannot be an absolute beast on stage, of course. He's just more in his element when it comes to melancholic ballads, and he's had a hand in choreographing contemporary routines before

That experience and knowledge easily make him a capable choreographer for the group

After all those years of not being able to properly express himself, Todoroki learnt to let his dance tell a story in itself

He's also a fast learner, so any hip-hop techniques he easily picks up and incorporates into the routine

This makes me think he’s going to be a main dancer and a lead vocal, maybe even main vocal

I don’t see him in a leader position because while he has the charisma for it, I think he’d lack in communication, like Bakugou. They’re both a bit too used to doing things on their own that they 1) can’t trust anyone else to do it right and 2) as a result have never consulted other people about how they do things

The difference is Bakugou is a little more observant and far-thinking enough to be a leader, but it doesn’t make Todoroki any less important

If anything, he’s the mom friend, and always makes sure that the members stay in line and out of trouble

Also, for some reason, he's got exceptional charisma on stage and he doesn't even know it

Like, a sexy song comes on and then there’s Todoroki's smoldering heterochromatic gaze

Fans: omgomgomg how is he so hot what the—

Him: ??? This is my normal face tho

It's a strange feeling. One moment, he can be humping the floor and another moment he's got dimples in his cheeks from smiling. It makes him look like a totally different person, even though he's the same guy

His fans don't know why either

As much as he has a creative outlet in dance, Todoroki thinks he has no talent for songwriting or producing. He doesn't consider them his areas of expertise and if he was asked to write lyrics he'd have a hard time because he rarely expresses himself with words. He'd fret on it and eventually not get much done, so why try?

He does help out though, in offering suggestions on how to proceed, but he won't take the lead for any of these. Only dancing

That and his growing up with a businessman father leads him to also know the industry rather well, so he can offer some insights as to what image they could go for and how to market their discography

When it comes to styling, Todoroki is an absolute Mess. The things he likes and wants to wear doesn't suit him all that much, and the stylists usually have a hard time picking out clothes that really accentuate his look and figure. The myriad of colors in his hair and face lead to color clashes, but they find that red and blue are usually the go-to colors.

Did I mention that Todoroki doesn't mind dying his hair as long as they don't dye the white part? Enough said

They've done rainbow on him before!

He also doesn't cover up his scar, and over the years he's learnt to make it his charm point

It serves to make him a noticeable figure in the industry (as if his heterochromia weren’t enough) but it also makes him easily recognisable to fans

It’s not like he doesn’t like interacting with his fans, but sometimes some of them get a little too close, or ask questions that are way too personal

During those times, he’s at least got his members to relate and support him through it

The cutest thing about this man has got to be when he interacts with fans

Like, he’s pretty expressionless most of the time, but he always makes sure that his fans know that he’s extremely happy to have them here, and that he’ll continue doing the best he can for them

If you’re lucky and catch a small smile from him when you’re at a fan sign, I guess you could die peacefully

To summarize, Todoroki is a sweet bean but hardly ever shows it

When people praise his looks, he’s humble about them (though it’s more because he doesn’t know or think he’s attractive… baby just doesn’t see it)

And to top it all off, he’s a charmer on and off stage with his quiet, sensitive nature and calm demeanor

He’s also the one that’s most likely to have a modeling career outside of his idol work

He can’t act for the life of him even though he’s got the expressions right on stage

Like Deku and Bakugou, he could always go solo, but his reason for not doing so is mainly because he’s found a new family, here with his members, and he doesn’t want to lose it

He doesn’t even mind if they don’t produce music anymore. As long as everyone sticks together and has a good time, he’s willing

Spill the tea on Stevinel (just because I saw one for conniverse) And yes, I'm not on Anonymous. Because I'm a proud stevinel shipper and no one's going to stop me from loving it, also your blog is cool

And you know what? That’s the right attitude to have! People should be free to express what they ship without shielding themselves with anonymity. I don’t blame the people that do these days - antis are fucking dangerous people - but goddamn, people. It’s fiction.

So I commend you for shipping Stevinel openly and proudly! Hard to believe it’s actually considered a bold and brave move just to be open and honest about harmless preferences these days.

That said, I’m sorry it took so long to get to this. I felt you deserved an epic, given how unexpectedly successful my tirade on why Connverse is a shit ship with an undeserved golden reputation was...

But the truth is, even though I’m very much a Stevinel shipper, it’s definitely not my OTP.

And it’s very tricky for me to figure out how to spill the tea on Stevinel in a way that’s distinct from me doing the same with Stevidot.

Because, well, let’s face it: these two ships, beyond being very similar in nature, have also endured identical hardships from the fandom.

All the death threats Stevinel fans get from the raging antis for daring to ship something so “problematic/immoral/wrong/not Connverse”?

Stevidot fans have been treated that exact same way for years. And still are. For the exact same reasons.

Both Stevinel and Stevidot shippers are valid, but the fandom constantly turns a blind eye to Rebecca Sugar’s husband who also worked on the show outright saying gem x human ships are FAIR GAME.

And also turn a blind eye to the recent interview where Sugar herself stated that the gems are more like AI - a conclusion I and many others deduced ages ago just by how gems are portrayed in the show.

But by god, they’ll hang on Matt Burnett’s word that “grown gems” are a thing even though canon itself explicitly states that GEMS DON’T GROW.

Just like how despite Maya Petersen outright admitting that Aroace!Peridot is just her headcanon, people treat it like the fucking gospel now.

(no offense to anyone who’s committed to that particular headcanon - I just don’t really see it with Peridot in particular and it’s really fucking stupid to claim it’s 100% canon when the source herself explicitly said it wasn’t)

Well, it’s canon that Spinel kissed Steven and he didn’t turn into dust. And Steven was already well on his way down the path of self-destruction at this point in time; he would’ve gone monster whether this happened or not.

Also, how often does a character get the “heart eyes” expression for just a platonic love?

If there was ever a scene where Connie or Steven had heart eyes, no doubt most of the pricks would scream “YES!!!! UNDENIABLE PROOF THAT THEY’RE IN LOVE!!!”

But when it’s Spinel, suddenly it doesn’t count? Really?

How convenient.

There’s also the stupid idiots who saw the conceptual development of Spinel in that movie artbook and saw some vague color keys during a conceptual stage and claimed that Spinel was “family” to Steven - which of course must mean “related” and therefore must make Stevinel an incestuous relationship!

Which is bull. Also shit. It’s already common knowledge that gems don’t work that way. She was the designated playmate for Steven’s mother. Nothing more.

Of course, most gems who come in Steven’s orbit end up being sort of a family to him.

But everyone seems to have this impression that a gem being part of Steven’s family means they become additional surrogate mom figures.

And yeah no, that’s dumb and wrong. Garnet and Pearl are really the only ones I’d consider actual “mom figures”. Amethyst’s more of a big sister. Everyone else can vary depending on perspective, but I’ve never seen any of the other gems as anything close to a motherly figure for Steven. Any time I see shit about Lapis or Peridot being regarded as “gem moms” to Steven, I laugh my ass off. They are so not moms or any kind of authoritative figure for Steven. Bismuth at best is more of the fun-loving aunt.

There are more roles in a family than just a paternal/maternal substitute. In fact, I believe Steven has considered Connie to be part of his family well before they hooked up in canon.

(as a side-note, I love how people who are allegedly SO squicked out by age gap ships totally pardon Connverse - you guys realize Connie was 14 in Future, right? Possibly 15 depending on the time scale? There’s gonna be a point in the relative near future where Steven is 18 and Connie isn’t - why don’t I hear you assholes angst about that “atrocity”, huh?)

I honestly do consider the CG B-Team as part of Steven’s family, but more in a loose sense. But by that same token, I consider Connie as part of the family in a similar manner.

Especially since Spinel was shoved off to live with the Diamonds after the movie - and the Diamonds themselves have a very fucked-up relationship among themselves to the point where I honestly hesitate to put a familial label on it at all - it’s extra stupid to try and paint Stevinel as something with incestuous overtones when it clearly doesn’t.

Spinel does happen to be a perfect representative of how full of shit antis are about age gaps, though.

While Peridot’s age has always been left vague, we know she can’t be 5K or older due to being an Era 2 gem. Due to her utter lack of knowledge of Era 1 events (or being completely sold on the Diamonds’ propaganda) and her general inexperience with her own equipment - as well as her ability to quickly adapt to Earth - I always headcanoned Peridot as being especially young. Like, younger-than-Steven young.

Mostly because Peri’s attitude reeks of Gen Z - also because it’d be nice for a change to have a gem who isn’t thousands of years old like literally every other noteworthy gem in the show. We need a representative of gemkind who hasn’t been around for ages.

Of course, Spinel’s backstory proves that even if they went the boring route and made Peridot thousands of years old just like everybody else, it wouldn’t really mean much of anything. She’d be no less of a valid romantic option for Steven regardless of age.

Spinel is several thousands of years old, and the movie explicitly shows us what exactly that amounts to for a gem.

As I mentioned earlier, Sugar sees the gems more like AI. Spinel remaining in one spot for several millennnia, not moving an inch, not speaking to anyone, not seeing anything other than a gradually-deteriorating garden... yeah, and somehow, despite all that, Spinel’s still very childlike per her design. She had literally no room to mature or accrue life experience: Pink Diamond basically hit the pause button on her entire life.

Even though she’s several thousands of years old, through no fault of her own, Spinel’s mindset remained unchanged. It wasn’t until Steven inadvertently came into her life that she became twisted - understandably so after finally realizing she’d been abandoned by Pink.

But she still didn’t completely lose her true self. Spinel realized on her own that Steven didn’t deserve to suffer just because his mom was a negligent asshole. She also came to understand on her own that unlike Pink, Steven truly cared for her no matter what shit she threw his way.

Steven could give Spinel the care and attention she always deserved; something Pink totally denied her while deceiving her into wasting away with her abandoned playground. He could be the one to give Spinel the love she always deserved but was either denied or manipulated into believing she got.

Honestly, this is more than enough to warrant building something more between these two.

The age gap is irrelevant. The two have chemistry. They aren’t related.

(and honestly, this is fiction - these details are largely irrelevant in fiction anyway. I’m only bringing it up because it doesn’t take much research to find that every label the antis put on Stevinel is complete inaccurate Diamond propaganda bullshit)

Stevinel is FINE. Let people ship it if they want to!

Um... is that good enough?

Honestly, I’m not gonna lie: Stevinel’s pretty goddamned popular; so much that I’m a bit jealous of it. I enjoy the ship a lot, but I’ve been keeping it at arms-length all this time. I’m looking forward to when I can write my own brand of Stevinel interaction when I get to introduce her in my series, but that’s still a while to go.

Also, there’s almost zero Peridot/Spinel material, let alone my Peridot/Steven/Spinel OT3. And Stevidot material is still hard to come by; I’m noticing Stevinel’s still quite a bit easier to find by comparison.

So in a way, I feel many other unpopular ships deserve some tea-spilling sooner than Stevinel because Stevinel at least still has a sizable fanbase. Same can’t really be said for a lot of similar ships here...

A lot of this can apply to other Steven x gem ships, honestly.

But I guess I haven’t been showing Stevinel much proper love due to my devotion to my superior SU-AU. I can only hope I can soon reach a point where I can have GA Spinel react to Steven, since their dynamic will be significantly different.

(and then one day I’ll finally make the Peridot/Steven/Spinel OT3 fic!!)

Until then, I can only hope I did Stevinel some justice here!

Looks like you were spot on about AFOs intentions when it came to shigaraki in your mermaid fic. I actually didnt seen anyone predict that one other than you. Do how does it feel to be right?

Holy belated-answers, Batman!

So, before I get into this, I do want to clarify something--I assume that by “predict that one” you mean the idea that AFO wants to transfer his consciousness into Shigaraki? To possess him? I’m going to talk a fair amount about why I actually DON’T think that’s the case, but I don’t want you to feel like I’m unloading that on you personally. I have a lot of thoughts on it because the possession theory is--from what I’ve seen--actually so common that a number of people take it as a given! I have Opinions on that, as I do with so many things.

Okay, so: in the mermaid fic, I wrote AFO intending to possess Shigaraki as a nod towards where I used to think the canon was going, but no longer did at the time of writing. When I posted AFO’s debut chapter to AO3, I said this in an author’s note:

“He will become the next me,” is the line that turned my feelings on Shigaraki from, “Ugh, why would you waste such a great design on such a trite light novel nihilist?” to, “GO, HAND-MAN, GO GO GO!” I assumed All for One, with his thrashed-to-within-an-inch-of-his-life body, was setting Shigaraki up for some kind of body-thief plotline, and obviously, the bratty, petulant Shigaraki was no match for the experienced, meticulous manipulator that was his Sensei. Immediately, my root-for-the-narrative-underdog instincts kicked in.

That’s not the way the story ended up going, of course, but the thought has remained with me, an important milestone in my relationship with Shigaraki as a character, so when I saw the opportunity to use the line more literally in this AU, I grabbed it with both hands and didn’t look back.

It definitely wasn’t intended to be a prediction! In fact, I have almost eight thousand words of essay sitting on my hard drive right now about why I don’t think it was AFO’s intention to possess Shigaraki--or at least why I think it’s worth giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Current manga events being what they are, you can see why the essay’s on hold! I like enough of what’s in there that I will get around to reworking it to a postable state one of these days, but for a preview, there are just too many things that All For One says and does and thinks that make no sense to me if he’s been planning to take over Shigaraki from the beginning.

As far as current events go, it seems likely that he would have known from his own experience that there was at least a chance that giving Shigaraki his quirk would result in Shigaraki having a Sensei vestige, but what in that experience would have suggested that said vestige would have any ability whatsoever to control Shigaraki? AFO only ever had nightmares about the people whose quirks he took; nowhere does he imply that he ever had to fight with those visions for possession of his own body.

AFO is an egomaniac, sure, but to assume that he can possess Shigaraki just in the form of a vestige? It’s surely no guarantee--and even if he thought there was a reasonable chance because his will was just that strong, how would that help the real All For One? I think, at the core, the trouble I have with the vestige possession theory is this:

A) If AFO is the type of person who is too much of an egomaniac to leave the future to a successor whom he hand-raised to be a Symbol of Terror and cause maximum suffering to his personal enemies and the world at large, then surely he’s too much of an egomaniac to cede control to a phantom version of himself that leaves the real him up Shit Creek?

B) But if AFO is content to cede his future to a duplicate of himself, then why shouldn’t he be content to do the same for Tomura?

Sure, there’s something to be said for him only recognizing a version of himself as worthy, but I think there’s as much chance that he’d be cautious of another version of himself as welcoming of it, as compared to a successor he would always have some influence over. I suppose there’s also the idea that Real-AFO has a psychic link with Shigaraki now (as people have been supposing about AFO and Deku since the Joint Training Arc or earlier, and it would explain all the grinning to himself he’s doing in prison and why we keep cutting away to it), but again, theorizing that he could have predicted any of this from the outset is giving him credit for insight that crosses the border into the precognitive. He’s canny and experienced, but he’s not Sir Nighteye. And even if he was, that would still leave us for no explanation about e.g. his comment about Best Jeanist’s quirk being ill-suited to Tomura’s personality or all the inner thinking he does about Tomura growing and becoming independent.

Personally, I’d like to see Tomura stalk into Tartarus in the eventual jailbreak arc, explain the situation, and be like, “Sensei, what the fuck?” only to have AFO respond with, “Haha, oh dear, that does sound troublesome! I didn’t expect my vestige would be so strong! Leave it to me, I guess. Oh, don’t worry, Tomura; I have full faith that you’ll be able to overcome it, as you always have everything else.”

Because while I can see AFO trying to take control of Shigaraki if serendipity presents him a chance, I just can’t make that translate to AFO having been planning this all along. I will, hopefully when the dust settles some on this arc, have rather a lot more to say about the topic.

In the meantime, though, I leave readers with this question: does the vestige reveal mean All For One has had an inner Ujiko cheerleader in his brain for nigh on seventy years?? They really are the world’s best worst married couple.

(P.S.: His intentions towards Shigaraki aside, I did semi-predict the matter of All for One being dogged by the spirits of those he’s stolen from, both in the form of him crying in his sleep in voices not his own in the mermaid fic and in private-chat theorizing about canon with @codenamesazanka about how, if AFO and OFA both have vestiges, why shouldn’t the same be true of any dislocated quirk? Being right about that feels pretty awesome!)

[putting the rest of this under a cut because it just ended up being me grumping at length about fandom trends - which, yes, i am well-aware is a silly endeavour in all cases, but sometimes you just gotta have your little grump regardless, you know, for health reasons. X) and in this particular case the grumping is probably relevant/entertaining only to myself, and you, and one or two other people here, so, tucking it away to spare everyone’s dash :) ]

the other day i was exploring the mostly abandoned wasteland that is the merlin fandom on livejournal (since that’s my original fandom home and obviously i missed out on being involved in that particular niche of lj when merlin was active, so i was feeling nostalgic and kinda curious as to it had looked like) - i stumbled over a merlin fic-finders comm and looked up my boy william just for kicks, and surprisingly, a couple of the old requests sounded like maybe i WAS involved in the merlin fandom on livejournal back then and i just don’t remember it

i think i wrote this in a past life

this is an eleven year-old comment in a mostly defunct fandom community but i felt it in my BONES

oh, my dear commenter from 8 years ago, i WISH XD

it made me laugh, and then it made me grumpy, because obviously there were very few suggestions offered in response to these asks - the fics just don’t exist, not in any numbers.

and like, the thing is, i don’t particularly care about the shipping side of things for the most part; i always lean towards gen and that’s mostly been it, for me; that’s always been my MO in every fandom i’ve ever participated in, but - look. if i have to witness (*checks ao3*) 23,830 (twenty four thousand. twenty four THOUSAND!!!!) instances of merlin getting together with arthur hecking pendragon, over and over and over again, in every AU configuration under the sun, then you had better believe i am ready and willing to plead the case of the only person in the merlin-verse who did not think arthur pendragon deserved merlin’s entire life.

and of course, there’s nothing inherently wrong with arthur and merlin as an item, obviously (i mean, i can name a few things about it that don’t appeal to me personally, but that is not the same thing as a value judgment) and everybody should have fun with their own ships, always - but for me, personally, there is just...enough of that out there. i have seen Enough. it’s hard for me to even determine where the rest of the fandom is, under the ever-present spread of merlin/arthur content; a picture of merlin/arthur should literally be next to the dictionary entry for steamroller.

and of course, i knew it would be like this from the beginning, and i know complaining about the ubiquitousness of a particular ship in fandom is utterly silly, in the end, because it’s not like there’s anything wrong with something being ubiquitous - the whole point of fandom is to make what you love, and if that’s what everybody loves, well, hey, that’s just how it is! that’s what people should be making - the stuff they love! that’s what fandom is here for! i only mutter to myself in the bubble of my own blog because the ubiquitousness makes it almost impossible for me to find what *i* love, because i don’t want to read about arthur/merlin in the first place, no matter who else appears in the fic, and also because my fave minor character, while he gets a pretty good amount of fannish screentime for someone who showed up in one episode, also suffers from the curse known as “virtually everything he features in is actually about merlin and arthur getting it on”

like - by the numbers, when you exclude merlin/arthur from will’s character tag, will retains less than 20% of his fics, some of which are already like...you know, he’s dead, or just mentioned, et cetera.

and his poor ship tag...he and merlin have 136 fics in their tag, and at first you wanna look at that and be like - ‘hey, not bad, pal, that’s p. good for a rarepair!’ but in actuality, less than 20 of those fics are actually about him and merlin. like...12% of his own ship tag actually belongs to him, and the rest is him being used as a plot device to get arthur and merlin together.

and i am sure that a lot of other side characters probably suffer from this, too, given the general fic distribution in this fandom, though the only person i’ve looked at for comparison purposes is freya, who is a (mostly) one-ep character like will. she, despite that, doesn’t appear to get hit quite as hard - she seems to keep more of her fic for herself, which is nice (when i exclude merlin/arthur from the freya/merlin search, freya still retains about 65% of her fics, as opposed to will’s sad little 12%). i’m glad for her, though - she of all people does not need to be losing fic to arthur; she has suffered enough.

to put things in perspective, though - merlin and uther have more fics in their ship tag that earnestly focus on the tagged....hnhhmgnhn i can’t say it...relationship than merlin and will do - even filtering out every instance of dubcon/noncon.

(and yes, i did in fact want to die when i had to actually click the merlin/uther tag on ao3 in order to check that factoid, thanks for asking.)

so, that said - i don’t generally read canon-era fic anyway, when i’m actively writing for a fandom, but since the merlin fandom sometimes feels like it consists solely of modern AU’s anyway, all i am trying to say is that it would be nice if i could pick up an AU including a character i enjoy without seeing him constantly reduced to:

merlin’s loser ex

merlin’s abusive ex (w h at)

merlin’s ex who’s kinda sorta tolerable-ish, maybe, if you squint, but just ultimately Not Right for merlin - holding merlin back, or being too overbearing, or too pushy, or Just Not Enough - or being someone who merlin stays with only bc he’s familiar and merlin’s settling for something safe and unrisky and stagnantly unfulfilling

the dude who merlin cheats on to be with arthur

the dude who cheats on merlin, bc the fic needed a reason to break up merlin and will so that white-knight!arthur could swoop in (cue me shouting ‘IN WHAT UNIVERSE DO YOU THINK WILL WOULD EVER - ’)

the dude merlin “makes mistakes with” when things with arthur aren’t going well

the friend-with-benefits who’s apparently chill with a casual arrangement, thus keeping himself conveniently out of the way of the oncoming merlin/arthur train

the friend-with-benefits who’s secretly NOT chill with a casual arrangement and who’s pining for merlin, except we all know that ain’t ever going anywhere because arthur exists, and in the meantime merlin only ever gets together with will to try and forget his problems

the friend-with-no-benefits who’s still pining for merlin (which situation, i might add, would be read completely differently if it were arthur in will’s shoes, because if that were the case then the audience would 100% be rooting for him)

the “best friend” whose only purpose in fic is to provide space for conversations/debriefs about merlin’s relationship/pre-relationship with arthur (like - i’m sorry, but there desperately needs to be some type of bechdel-esque test for will; e.g. do will and merlin have a conversation about something other than arthur pendragon? if yes, u win, u may pass go, collect 20 dollars, congratulations)

the friend whose dislike of arthur always, ALWAYS ends up being framed as a mistake. as will’s stubborn unwillingness to give arthur a chance, until at last will sees the light and succumbs to the irresistible beauty of merlin and arthur’s eternal love. -_- there is vanishingly rare acknowledgement in fic of the fact that in the canon universe, all of the criticisms will makes about merlin and arthur’s relationship are not only accurate, but made in merlin’s best interests (and also, ultimately, proven right, by the end of the show - merlin tanks his whole damn life for a series of empty promises prophesying arthur pendragon’s future potential, and he gets NOTHING for his devotion. merlin is more alone at the end of the show than he was at the beginning, when his only dream was to be loved and accepted by more than the two people who’d comprised his entire life up until that point. and he spends at least half a decade in between the show’s hopeful beginning and its miserable end being told that he’s evil by the very person for whom he is expected to sacrifice his future.

so what, exactly, makes will so wrong to be wary? who among us wouldn’t be angry if we saw somebody we loved being forced to sacrifice themselves on an unforgiving altar like this?

i don’t know the answer. i’m not sure what it is that earns will his spot on the “destined to be shafted for arthur pendragon” list. i don’t know if it’s an unconscious backlash to will’s refusal to hop on the arthur/merlin train, or if it’s just a superficial understanding/lack of genuine interest in his character, which, in that case, sure, i’ll give people that one, in all fairness; not everyone has spent a year picking his character apart (though i still don’t think it justifies tossing him in there just because the fic needs a random insert who can be positioned as inferior to arthur’s gloriousness). either way, the end result is that we usually end up seeing a will who has very little in common with his source material, or who needs to ultimately step aside to make way for arthur - arthur, who never displays the same level of care toward merlin in canon that merlin shows toward him, and who actively oppresses merlin’s people for the entire duration of their relationship.

like...it’s all just fic, obviously, and we can make characters as OOC as we want; have fun; go wild. but at the same time, it’s impossible for me not to balk at how arthur in some of this fic is just - utterly unrecognizable. in comparison with fic!will, arthur is the most Solicitous, Gentle, Understanding, Deeply Concerned, Invested-In-Merlin’s-Welfare-and-Inner-Thoughts creature you ever did see, and I’m just over here like - it is not like that! it is NOT LIKE THAT! IT HAS LITERALLY NEVER BEEN LIKE THAT. arthur pendragon in fic sometimes interacts with merlin like - he tilts his head and listens like a therapist and affirms absolutely everything merlin says and tells him ‘gosh, i understand. tell me more. how can i help you’ - he goes about his day thinking about merlin and putting merlin first and i just - i literally have never seen this person before in my life. who is this man? who is this unbelievably attentive paragon of caring? i’ve never met him before.

the entire running problem with merlin and arthur’s friendship in canon is that arthur, while he absolutely does care about merlin, tends to take merlin for granted. merlin is just another feature of arthur’s landscape, until something dramatic happens and arthur has a little scare and saves merlin’s life, and then things go back to the way they were. arthur doesn’t See merlin the way he should, not in the ordinary moments. merlin goes home and spends his evenings thinking about arthur’s life; he ties himself in knots trying to help arthur develop as a person and to keep arthur safe and happy, but arthur just goes home and eats supper with his wife. arthur does not go home and spend his nights agonizing over how he can improve merlin’s life. he never once thinks, ‘my purpose on this earth is to serve and support my friend merlin.’ he never feels like he’s supposed to be half of some two-sided coin. i know people like to give arthur this quality in their fic - and that’s totally fine, of course, it’s fic, have as much fun as you want - but in canon, that is just not something arthur pendragon does. it’s not who he is shown to be.

and yet almost every time when i go to explore fandom, i find that the person who does put merlin first in canon is perpetually elbowed aside for this extremely generous interpretation of everyone’s favorite prince.

and i just...i always try to find the good bits in everything, and i am sometimes willing to overlook a ship i don’t personally enjoy if there’s something else about the piece that i think is great, but there’s only so many times i can read the sentence “merlin had never felt like this with anyone, not even will” in fics where merlin and will are supposed to have been dating or even married/engaged, or “will was merlin’s best friend, but he just didn’t understand” (not like arthur, of course, who merlin literally just met a week ago), or “will was great, but there was only so much of him merlin could stand in one sitting/will was great, but he was best enjoyed in small doses.” there’s only so many times i can read a hundred different variations of that before i start to get real grumpy. and that’s not even touching the fics where will’s portrayed less favorably than that, even.

so, you know. i feel grumbly about it sometimes, how this particular character is trapped in a perpetual net of always being less-than, when one of the nicest parts of fandom for me is that every character/ship can have an infinitude of possibilities, even the ones i personally think are unbelievably bizarre (which category merlin and will do not even fall into, like - it’s not an incredible leap. merlin/mordred is a leap, okay; mordred is like seventeen years old! leon/morgana is a leap - how on earth did that become so popular??? - but will and merlin? that’s not a leap.)

what is it about will that makes him so tempting to trample over? will’s only sin in canon was to look at arthur pendragon and pronounce himself utterly unimpressed. his only crime was to tell merlin ‘this dude isn’t good for you,’ about which fact he was CORRECT, by the way - he is the first person who ever chooses to care about merlin, the first person merlin ever chooses to trust, the first friend who loves real!merlin without needing to be coaxed and convinced and taught that it’s okay. he is the only one who ever tells merlin ‘you deserve better than this mess,’ the only one for whom merlin has always been priority number one and in whose eyes arthur isn’t even on the map. merlin’s friendship with will (and lancelot, afterwards) is the healthiest one merlin ever gets to experience, and i wish more fannish material acknowledged it as such, as opposed to using will to set up merlin and arthur’s epic romance.

all of this, i suppose, is just a very long way of saying that now that i am no longer avoiding spoilers and have actually started testing the waters of the wider fandom, i have come to the obstinate, utterly inflexible conclusion that will deserves his own collection of happy endings, and i don’t care if i have to write them myself. i’ve already got the gen angle covered. and even though i’ve never written ship!fic in my life, the fact of the matter is that spite can be a hell of a motivator, and i will bite the bullet and learn how to do it if i have to. if people can really be out here tagging their merlin/uther fics as “schmoop” (YES. REALLY.) then by GOD, i swear, there are no excuses - this fandom can accommodate literally anything; there’s no reason it can’t accommodate stories where will wins. let this kid have his good ending. arthur pendragon can fall in love with merlin 23,830 times despite his and merlin’s ship flying in the face of canon, and that means will deserves his own tiny handful of stories to be actually about him, without his and merlin’s relationship being used solely as a stepping stone on the way to merlin and arthur’s 23,831st triumph.

i am just saying - if uther pendragon can fall in love with merlin and have it tagged as ‘fluff,’ then for the love of all that is good, we can give will his moment. let will enjoy the respect he should have earned from us when he died saving both merlin and arthur’s lives. let will be a person in his own right, instead of a plot device sacrificed to the (in)glorious altar of merthur. let will have an inner life of his own. let will have a best friend who doesn’t treat him like an accessory to The Greatest Love Story Ever Told. let will himself live out The Greatest Love Story Ever Told, for once. let will get his guy. i may tend to focus on friendship in my own work, but there are a lot of universes out there, and when it comes to someone who has always been so alone, and so singularly focused on merlin’s wellbeing, i’m not entirely sure if friendship even feels anything different to “in love” for will at all, in at least some of these places.

let will have his happy tags. he’s been on his own for so much of his life - let him have his simple ‘friendship’, his ‘platonic love,’ his ‘found family.’ let him have his lovestruck ‘pining,’ ‘friends-to-lovers,’ ‘angst with a happy ending,’ too, and let him keep those tags for himself. let characters who aren’t arthur pendragon have their love stories.

i may not care much for shipping, and i would rather read gen any day of the week, but let me tell you right now, i would rather write will and merlin settling down in a haze of domestic bliss 23,830 times before i would ever want to watch merlin ditch him yet again for a dude who never matched merlin’s level of caring and investment in the canon ‘verse.

might be an unpopular opinion but i really love spectra’s potential as a villain. she may not be as popular as vlad or as in your face as valerie, but she’s got so much power when it comes to getting under danny’s skin.

it’s kinda hard to explain, but i feel like the big difference between her and the other villains is that danny can like. easily fight back? he knows exactly what vlad is after, and he knows exactly why it’s wrong and why he should reject it. he’s used to skulker because of how much he shows up, and again, danny can directly see what’s wrong. danny isn’t even terribly afraid of val because he knows why she’s mad and understands the tech and her motive.

but spectra? oh boy. ohhh boy. spectra can get to him. spectra understands the things he’s most sensitive about, understands his deepest, darkest fears better than vlad ever could. she’s the only one i can think of who really almost stopped him completely for an extended period of time, affecting him subtly enough that he didn’t truly realize until it was almost too late because the damage was internal.

she’s super cunning and manages to hide from his ghost sense longer than any other ghost could. am i the only one who thinks it’s kind of funny she posed as a therapist, the same thing jazz is, or wants to be? maybe danny wasn’t as quick to judge because he was used to the profession.

idk, it’s just awful to think how much danny could suffer under her hands if he didn’t have the support system he does. spectra is absolutely ruthless and managed to get danny to truly believe he was the one in the wrong, isolated him from his relationships better than vlad every could, and got to what’s essentially the meat of literally every angst fic out there:

what are you? a ghost trying to fit in with humans? or a creepy little boy with creepy little powers?

and i think it’s something he’s sensitive about, and it‘s definitely shown both in canon and fanon. her powers affected him more than most of the ghosts he’s interacted with.

at least with the bigger badder villains, danny can differentiate between right and wrong. but when spectra gets him to believe he’s in the wrong, it becomes infinitely harder for him to fight back. it’s only through his relationships that he was able to. if you think about the au where danny doesn’t tell anyone about his ghostly status, spectra’s power grows a terrifying amount, and i wonder just how much danny would be able to take of it without a support system telling him that he’s actually not a monster.

she’s such a scary villain.

Collision AU

Alternately the Everbody Loves Jaskier Because He’s a Sweetheart AU

Hear me out, canonically, there are different worlds that Ciri can hop to and from. Why the shit not use that to make crossovers? Because, Ciri isn’t the only one who can do it, and why not characters from other games/books I love? And the chaos that would ensue…This got long, sorry.

*This is basically my excuse to have multiple powerful people adore Jaskier because the bard deserves it. Fuck off. Also, Geralt gets a shovel talk from someone who can back it up?

*So, there is Some Shit™ that happens and now multiple worlds can basically freely access each other and that? Is not good. Tamriel, The Northern Kingdoms and Thedas collide as simultaneous cataclysmic explosions of power occur on all 3 coincide and create a connection. You do not want things from The Northern Kingdoms to get involved with things from Thedas or Tamriel. Or vice versa.

*Just saying, a Darkspawn Kikimora is a BAD DAY. The Daedric Princes would have a field day with the people in The Northern Kingdoms; especially Sheogorath and Sanguine. And the kinds of vampirism present in both Tamriel and The Northern Kingdoms would cause some fucking problems in Thedas.

*Plus no one is prepared for the demons. Thedosian demons are bad all by themselves, adding other magics to the mix just makes it worse. Even Vesemir is like “Fuck this I need an ale.”

Starting With Thedas

*I’ll be super honest, I mostly want to have an excuse for Geralt and the other Witchers to meet The Iron Bull and have no fucking idea what to think about him. Here is this. Guy. And he’s a certifiable BAMF. Routinely fights dragons and calls it fun, could go toe to toe with a Witcher and also call it fun but he’s also NOT a grumpy jerk. These things do not equate in Witcher logic.

*Jaskier and Bull get into a Pun-Off, it ends with Jaskier conceding to Bulls “Pun-ishing grasp of wordplay”. Jaskier brings Bull to tears of laughter with a few really dirty songs.

*Bull might seem like a big loud brute, but he is so freaking smart and he loves talking about poetry forms with Jaskier, and how easy it is to sway hearts and minds with just a little story telling and embellishment. He also introduces Jaskier to The Chargers and gets a “Dammit Chief.” from a long suffering Krem.

*Jaskier creates The Chargers Sonata and they all love it.

*Jaskier and Dorian are destined to be the very best friends. Both in love a with a big strong warrior with a heart of gold, both love wine, both love fashion and music. Both actually rather scholarly in their respective fields. Dorian and Jaskier can both talk for hours, and Geralt gets annoyed until he realizes how much it means to Jaskier to have a friend he can just talk to. Who can and will just talk back. It’s cannon in book/game verse that Jaskier is actually Julian Alfred Pankratz, Viscount de Lettenhove and thus a noble. He and Dorian connect over horrifying fathers, surviving abuse and unrealistic expectations that they turned their backs on. More to come on this because, oh, I have so many thoughts about Jaskier’s backstory.

*Vivienne and Yennefer drink wine and talk so much shit. Madame De Fer yearns for Power and Respect. Yennefer has these two attributes in spades. Yennefer is powerful in all the ways Vivienne wishes she could be. And Yennefer finds a kindred soul in Vivienne, someone who takes all their bitterness and anger and wraps it around them in a fashionable wall of armor. A woman who wants to be more than what people have decided she will be. Beautiful, clever, deadly and powerful. But both of them have just that little chink, that soft place named either Bastien or motherhood. That small hurting part and they find comfort in knowing that there is another person who matches them so well. They are later joined by Triss.

*So, Joey Batey is 5’9”/175.26 cm and Henry Cavill is 6’1”/185.42 cm, but in my head Geralt is taller. So, I tend to leave Jaskier around 5’9” and Geralt around 6’5”/195.58 cm. This leads to a conversation, because the Iron Bull is described as being over 7 ft/ 213.36 cm tall, it’s never really specified, but I always sort of put him at closer to the 8 foot/243.84 cm mark because horns.

Geralt: I never knew how much your neck had to hurt?

Jakier: ???????

Geralt: I have never had to look up at someone to talk to them before. Not as an adult at any rate. You have to do it all the time.

Jaskier: (ಠ_ಠ) (ง'ಠ -'ಠ)ง

*The Iron Bull thinks Jaskier puts up with too much crap from Geralt.

*Dorian just pats Bull on the arm, because he knows what it’s like to fall in love fast and hard with someone who ‘doesn’t do romance’ or ‘no feelings’. Dorian knows how deeply Jaskier fell in such a short amount of time. Because even if he struggles to say it, he fell for Bull the exact same way. And by the grace of the Inquisitor, Dorian gets to have his love returned. But oh, he will never forget the days of loving a man who’s very culture forbade romantic attachment. And he also knows how Geralt feels; how absolutely terrifying it is to be loved by someone you know is too good for you.

Starting With Tamriel

*The Companions are having a damn good time fighting all the shit coming to Tamriel, because unknown monsters invading? Worlds colliding and spilling chaos into each other? That’s what makes Heroes and stories that are told for generations.

*Until Vilkas gets the blight, Torvar gets clawed to death by a despair demon, and Njada is gored by a royal griffin.

*Farkas has never even thought of a world without his twin, and he doesn’t know what to do now that he lives in it.

*Jaskier reaches out to Farkas, because he can’t stand people being so sad. “Tell me about your brother, tell me his adventures and manner and I will immortalize him in songs and stories across your world AND mine.”

*Farkas really comes to treasure Jaskier, even if he “Talks to fucking much.” They develop the kind of friendship where one chatters and the other kind of nods? Farkas has no clue what Jaskier is talking about most of the time but he really doesn’t mind listening.

*Jaskier carefully teaches Farkas to read, because Farkas is not actually stupid in my head. I think he’s dyslexic, and when you have a learning disability and you get told you are stupid often enough, you start to believe it.

*Farkas’ Nord DB Wife appreciates the effort and comes to really appreciate Jaskier.

*Spoiler alert; She is the one to give Geralt the shovel talk because he is next to nothing compared to her. A steel blade or silver blade won’t touch dragon bone armor and signs are a joke to her. She could literally rip his soul out with a shout before he could do dick. Axii can’t touch the mind of a this crazy bitch who’s gone against Hermaeus Mora and come out completely unscathed. She knows no fear and every Witcher within a mile of her has their instincts screaming. She’s just so oddly fucking soft. Her big sweet husband, sweet adopted children and twins on the way adding to already soft curves absolutely does not mesh with the aura of danger danger danger she exudes.

*Jaskier seems to be loved by people from worlds that are not his own and it makes him feel like he doesn’t belong and he should have been born somewhere else. Feeling like he’s outsider starts crushing him and then Geralt just holds him. Surrounds the slender bard with his bulk and relieves some of that pressure.

*“You belong with me, songbird. I am glad you are in my world.” It’s not, “I love you”, but it’s pretty fucking close and now he can’t wait to tell Dorian and Farkas.

There is a ton more to come, but I am writing waaay too much in head cannon posts. Sorry my friends. This is totally going to be Geraskier though. It’s going to happen. I am almost done with my half elf Jaskier thing too. I’ll post it here in a bit.

not sure What It All Means, but i think it’s kinda interesting that when crowley and gadreel were in sam’s head, gadreel manifested as Tahmoh, and lucifer manifested as nick in cas’ head, but when michael was in dean’s head, he manifested as dean. oooh or is that more of the metaphor for repression everyone was talking about

I know you’re looking for a deep narrative reason for it, but I think this one is a lot simpler than that.

Let’s start with Gadreel. When we first met Gadreel, he was in the Tahmoh vessel. That’s the face we associated with Gadreel, even when Sam was possessed by him, if that makes sense. Before and after Sam was possessed, Gadreel returned to that same vessel, who remained his vessel until his death in 9.23. In the scene in 9.10 where Crowley went into Sam’s head to convince him to evict Gadreel, it just... wouldn’t make narrative sense for Sam to have to fight HIMSELF, you know? Gadreel had spent most of his possession of Sam keeping Sam tidily in the dark. Sam didn’t even KNOW he was possessed most of that time, and what he did remember, Gadreel had wiped those memories, saying it was for Sam’s own good. (which, yeah, at first it was so Sam wouldn’t evict him before he could heal him enough so that he wouldn’t just insta-die if Gadreel left)

So there was never any interpersonal conflict between Sam and Gadreel, no identification between Sam and Gadreel during which Gadreel’s goal was to “steal Sam’s identity” in that way. Not to mention Sam’s conflict in s9 wasn’t with himself. So a fight scene of Sam wrestling and banishing HIMSELF would’ve been narratively... a mess. :P

We had ONE episode of Sam possessed by Lucifer (5.22), wherein Lucifer used Sam’s face. For the purposes of this post I’m not counting 5.04, because it was either Dean’s dream injected into his head by Zachariah (if you believe canon as we’ve seen it through the present time where AU Zachariah’s abilities clarified OG Zachariah’s powers-- ironically enough by using them ON Nick-As-Lucifer in 13.07, as well as Jack in 13.14), or a time travel scenario that Lucifer would have no recollection of after the fact when that timeline never came to pass in reality. So either way, irrelvant to the point of this post. :P

Back to the point. The visage of Lucifer, over the years, has LARGELY been portrayed by and associated with the Nick vessel. That has been the face that not only *we* have identified on the spot as Lucifer, but that Sam and Dean have identified as Lucifer, despite the fact he has possessed numerous other people-- including Cas, Vince Vincente, and President Rooney. Somehow he always comes back around to Nick.

And in 11.18, again Cas’s issue wasn’t an internal struggle against himself. At least not like that. His difficulty was his resignation and self-worthlessness, his belief that only Lucifer could act, and the only important purpose he could serve was as a willing vessel who just got out of the way and let Lucifer do the thing. Even though the current face had truly and traumatically been established as Cas’s face during the latter half of s11, and even though he continued to possess Cas right through the end of 11.22, it wasn’t CAS HIMSELF that was fighting to either expel Lucifer or to keep Lucifer in residence. He was literally sitting across the room not even paying much attention to the fight at all, resigned to his self-worthlessness and wallowing as if he was irrelevant. That was the point-- that Cas didn’t put up a fight either way. So he needed another face, and again, the face we all identify as “Lucifer” is Nick’s. That’s Lucifer’s Antagonist face-- not Sam’s face, not Cas’s own face.

Using the Nick vessel as his face possessing Cas (as it did for Sam when he confronted him in the cage in 11.09 and 11.10) also doubled down on the fact that yes, Lucifer is still that Antagonist. And for a character whose signature move is using specific faces to gain the trust of his intended vessels via manipulation (tempting Sam to say yes by appearing as Jessica, tempting Nick to say yes by appearing as his dead wife, tempting Vince to say yes by appearing as his dead girlfriend, etc.), the fact that he didn’t attempt to manipulate Cas by appearing as someone to “trick him” into compliance says a lot. He didn’t NEED to manipulate Cas into compliance, because Cas’s own mental state was doing most of the work for him.

So that brings us to Dean and Michael in 14.10. For most of s14, when Michael wasn’t actively possessing Dean, the fear and trauma suffered by Dean because of that possession had been the underlying dread for him. That loss of identity was something that Dean had never had to face so directly before, making his issue with Michael as one of him “fighting his way to the surface” through a feeling of “drowning” inside himself. And yeah, that also does directly touch on ALL of Dean’s issues, but from the moment Dean said yes in 13.23, Michael effectively adopted Dean’s face as his own.

The struggle for Dean after Michael repossessed him in 14.09 wasn’t so much against Michael, but against himself. This had been portrayed all season via the flashbacks to what Michael did while wearing Dean’s face, Dean’s first confrontation against Michael where Dean appeared in the mirror himself, already fighting to evict Michael, for whom the “etiquette of possession” did not seem to apply. Even though Dean was DIRECTLY revoking his consent to possession, Michael calmly refused to gtfo, you know? They’d already established a MUCH deeper connection there, entirely against Dean’s will.

Because Dean’s battle was never one of deception, it was always a matter of human will versus divine manipulation. Just as we saw unfold in 14.20 with Chuck, where we learned that NO amount of free will applied to these sorts of cosmic situations could ever have won the day as long as Chuck was invested in manipulating their story for his own entertainment, you know? And his struggle against Michael was basically the Final Boss Battle for Dean’s will, with Michael wearing Dean’s own face, locked in a literal fridge inside Dean’s mind. Nothing that’s locked up ever stays locked up forever, as long as cosmic forces are around to pry open those locks again for the sake of the story.

In that scene in Rocky’s Bar in 14.10, this was Dean metaphorically confronting those parts of himself that were tempted to believe in the story, the parts that made him doubt his own will, his own understanding (because the things Michael tormented him with were pretty warped interpretations of Dean’s own memories, you know?). And eventually it did take Dean’s “mirror” to destroy Michael... who continued to manifest right through 14.14 with Dean’s face, when he sought out Rowena to possess her. Theoretically he could’ve chosen any face to do that, and yet... he picked Dean’s.

Because that’s what s14′s main point boiled down to in that final scene, setting up s15′s initial conflict-- that after a lifetime of Dean basing his his ENTIRE personal philosophy in the face of Cosmic Conflict on the indomitability of the human will... well, now he must confront that essential belief and truly understand who he is, and his true place in the universe in the face of this eternal divine conflict.

Maybe Dean's a little too dedicated to the ruse when he accidentally calls Cas 'sweetheart' in private a couple of times, and maybe he kind of takes it upon himself to be the Best Husband Ever, ushering him around with a hand to the small of his back while uttering a disproportionate amount of praise, but other than that, it's all under control.

But then the monster attacks and Cas doesn't remember anything anymore.

And then there's a snooping innkeeper who makes it impossible to tell Cas about their sham marriage.

And it probably doesn't help that it happens to be their wedding night and Cas is intent on seeing their consummation through.

Akayona Magical Girls AU

Inspired by @akayonaladiesweek‘s prompts, I got sucked into worldbuilding a Magical Girls AU (which if the character designs cooperate might also fill the “Girls in Armor” prompt).

Read on for magical girls, rewritten origin legends, love-fueled superpowers, bowdlerized plot points and of course, adorable mascot-pet dragons!

In this version, the founding myth goes like this:

Long ago, five dragons lived under Heaven. The Red Dragon moved the fiery sun through the sky, the Green Dragon stirred the winds, the Blue Dragon sent the rain, the White Dragon sent dust to make the land, and the Yellow Dragon painted the sky morning and evening. The other dragons all had times to rest and play when their work was done, but the sun was always moving, and even when it sank below the horizon, the Red Dragon was busy all night moving it from west to east beneath the earth to have it ready for the next day. So the other four dragons said “Why do you never play with us? Why can’t the sun stop moving for a while?” and the Red Dragon said “That would be terrible for the ones down below.”

So the other four dragons, when they weren’t at work, looked down below, at the land where humans lived. They saw people fighting and stealing and lying. “These creatures are terrible,” they said. “We should destroy them. It will be a just punishment for their sins, and then our brother will be free to rest and play with us.”

So the four dragons went down toward the earth, but Heaven saw what they were doing. “Such merciless arrogance,” Heaven said. “These dragons must learn compassion. I will let them go down, but when they arrive they will be no greater than humans — they will lose their memory of heaven, and they will be weak and mortal until they learn to cherish their fellow creatures.”

This happened at noon, when the Red Dragon had pushed the sun up to its highest, and he was so close to heaven that he heard its words, and he was shocked. “Great Heaven,” he said, “I fear that my brothers’ punishment may only make them more bitter. Please, let me go to them.”

“But with a god to look after them, what will they learn?” Heaven asked.

“If my brothers are no greater than humans, then I too will be no greater,” said the Red Dragon. “Let me go down to earth as a human.”

And so it was. The Red Dragon left the sun and sky, earth and rain and wind in the care of Heaven, and he came down to earth as a human.

(chatty summarizing resumes) When he got there, he saw how much of human suffering was due to misrule and became the Red Dragon King after all and got into trouble like in the original version, but the other dragons couldn’t come down from heaven to save him. Although they’d lost their memories of heaven, they remembered their love for their brother, so they were drawn to help him, but first they had to learn their lesson — which they did by each bonding with a human girl (except maybe Yellow didn’t yet), Heaven decided to let them have some of their powers back because they were learning to love mortals but made it a shared power with the girls so the dragons wouldn’t get too full of themselves again, and thus the King was rescued by the first magical girls — called Dragon Guardians — and their divine dragon mascot-pets.

Yes, the dragons are the mascot-pets, and dragons who are no stronger than humans are adorable chibis as it turns out, but they’re the power unlockers. As a Dragon Guardian forms a stronger bond with one or more dragons, it unlocks her powers as well as theirs — so the powers are driven by character development and dynamics, which strikes me as both fun and true to the genre. At a certain level the dragons become able to transform into humans, and then there’ll be like a final ultimate level where they can appear as awesome godlike full-sized dragons.

(For practical purposes, though, I may need some kind of item that can unlock a base level of power, since I want more Guardians than I can supply dragons for. Current idea: the origin story rescue involves a climactic moment where all the dragons, possibly including red, go into their full-sized dragon god modes, but then they decide to humble themselves to keep living among mortals and they “shed their scales” which they literally did and the scales are the items of power, which are in limited supply but there are way more than four of them, and the priests usually have the job of managing them. Bonus in that dragon scales could be incorporated into all sorts of magical-girl-y fashion accessories.)

Anyway, moving forward to the present, since the dragons were “made mortal,” we have had generations of them (except for Yellow); being magical girl mascot pets I don’t think they reproduce sexually, a new one just appears, although when they get into human form romantic complications with humans are entirely possible.

On the one hand I want to stay relatively true to the canon story because that approach is more interesting to me personally, but on the other hand I think making this a proper magical girl story does call for some bowdlerizing. So here’s ideas:

No Game of Thrones stuff, firstly. The big political conflict is that Kai has heard about the Dragon Guardian powers and wants them. Yuhon hated the Dragon Guardian business and raised Soo-won to hate and disbelieve it. This will probably be a long-game reveal, but the deal is that Yonhi was actually a Dragon Guardian and is in such poor health after being wounded in battle because the priests gave her a scale and said she was supposed to do this shit, so there’s a grudge (see also kicking out priests — although maybe it was Yuhon who got her into that battle and his lashing out is guilt-driven). At any rate, Soo-won is very invested in not believing in and certainly not relying on the dragon guardian powers. In this version Yuhon lost the war and was captured, and when Il went to negotiate, he was also captured (possible brothers’ reconciliation in captivity?), and as a result Soo-won just straight-up inherited the throne at a young age, which I think he could handle honestly, and he and Yona are probably betrothed at this point just to sew it up extra neat and tidy. What sets off the story this time, I’m thinking an agent from Kai came and tried to kidnap Yona because they’d found out from her father that she was both an incarnation of the Red Dragon and a guardian — ie, the ultimate super-powered magical girl, potentially — and they tried to kidnap her for use as a WMD. Afterward she and Soo-won had a difference of opinion about how to deal, she made up her own mind to go on this quest, find out if these powers were real, and if so use them to help her people and rescue her Dad and Uncle and stuff, and of course Hak’s gonna go with her.

So the love triangle is going to be less of a foregone conclusion. Soo-won loses points early with his inability to accept what’s becoming important to her and let her use her own power. He’s too smart to be a flat-earth atheist when he actually sees the sparkles and mascot pets, which might create some uncertainty, but I’m thinking it’s like a thematic thing where for all his genuine virtues, Soo-won under his father’s influence wants to just protect Yona while Hak wants to support her, and Hak’s still gotta win that one.

Setting out on their quest they probably still meet Ik-su and pick up Yoon, and I’m thinking Ik-su gives Yona a dragon scale to get her started. And then we gather the dragons! We’re still going to have secret villages, because people wanting to take the dragons away to utilize their powers is still very much a thing. I haven’t decided about their canon powers — probably for ease of handling I’ll say those still apply when they become able to take human form, or that unlocking human-form-with-canon-powers is the next level past that.

Kija is still being pampered in his village — without the icky sexual coercion subplot this time (yay bowdlerizing) — and he will still totally fight you. He bites Hak a lot in the beginning. (Also having the thought that when we meet him Hak’s like “what is that, a snake?” but he has more moe proportions and a certain amount of fluff and little legs sticking out and Yona thinks he looks more like an ermine actually, so this time Hak ends up giving him the even-worse nickname “White Weasel.”)

Shin-ah is still neglected and alone, although I’m not sure yet how the problem of his power translates. It could be pretty direct, caused by a previous generation where a blue dragon bonded with a Guardian enough to use the scary canon powers leading to the belief about cursed eyes, but it would be awhile before we could see it in action. And we could still swing a mask of some sort if desired, like we could find him hooded like a falcon. I suspect it’ll be extra challenging to get him to turn human even after he should be able to. On the upside, though, he and little Ao are, like, closer to the same size, so we’re in for some serious cuteness overload with them.

Jae-ha enters a lot like he does in canon — which is possible because Gigan is a guardian. Because of their bond she can do cool superpowered stuff and he can take human form and use his canon powers. This also means that him going with Yona means Gigan giving up her powers (well, some of them, we can leave her with a scale — Yona wouldn’t need one anymore at that point — and she’s got a lot of Badass Normal going on too). It also means Jae-ha accepting being a mascot critter at least for a while, but that was less of a sticking point than his canon issues, which were pretty much same (although as a mascot critter he doesn’t have wrists or ankles to speak of so it was that they’d put a collar on him). This also adds to he and Gigan’s bits of mentorship toward the other dragons and Yona respectively, since they actually have years of experience with how this whole Guardian thing works. (Also in the Awa arc I may bowdlerize the human trafficking bit and it’s that Kum-ji is shipping dragon scales out, so more analogous to smuggling WMD.)

And Zeno’s still Zeno, although again bowdlerizing. Backing up to the origin myth, when the four dragons decided to destroy the humans, actually the Yellow Dragon was like “No, that would be horrible, let’s—” ::the other three all look at him:: “—let’s just hurt ‘em kinda bad.” So because he went along he shared in their punishment, but because his was a failure not of compassion but of courage, his punishment is somewhat different. He wasn’t made mortal like the others, and while he can work with a guardian, he can also use more of his power on his own when he shows courage — actually a stricter condition than getting himself grievously hurt, honestly. And Kaya was totally a guardian.

(In thinking of the mascot critter character designs, I’m imagining each of the chibi dragons having their own style of horns. Kija’s will be sort of perky upcurved antlers, Shin-ah’s will look like the horns of his mask, Jae-ha’s are more straight and angular antlers, and Zeno’s are curled like a sheep.)

We can also still have a version of the Fire Tribe arc conflict where Soo-jin is basically the “c’mon use the nukes” guy who plots against Soo-won because he does believe in the dragon guardian powers and wants to use them to crush Kouka’s enemies (like did you even get what that origin legend was about?).

And we get to have more of the female cast be guardians/magical girls! Lili, I’m really thinking so — although I’d prefer to leave Ayura and Tetra as Badass Normals to prove that women don’t need magic to kick ass. Maybe Tao — which would be a curveball since she’s not from Kouka, but that could be a good thing. And of course, to get to their full potential powers, they’d have to join up and have character development and form bonds with everybody…

Hmm, anyone else? Maybe a job for OCs…

REMEMBER WHEN YOUR POTENTIAL WAS A PROMISE INSTEAD OF A REGRET? ; aka the harry potter au, which i talked about writing & then rambled about to @diealive ( bless you, my friend ). this is really long, i am very sorry.

FIRSTLY, there are possibilities for variants of this, but the MAIN ONE involves erik as a ghost — an actual ghost, y’know. before he died, he obviously had a life, although true to poto canons, it was a sucky life. during the time period of the early 1800s in which he was born ( for this, the year 1832 ), it was probably not a good thing to be a magical child, especially one born with what other magical people called uriel’s touch gone wrong, & what non-magical folk just called deformity. since he was aware of the fact that he was terribly different from the people he was ( sometimes ) around, erik did what he thought was right — try his hardest to fit in. sadly, this attempt also involved attempts to suppress his magical abilities & anyone who’s seen fantastic beasts & where to find them knows what this results in. here is the harry potter wiki on OBSCURIALS & here are some important parts. see OBSCURIAL NOTES below this section. an obscurial is a young wizard or witch who developed a dark parasitical magical force, known as an obscurus, as a result of their magic being suppressed through psychological or physical abuse. an obscurial may lose control when they reach their emotional & mental breaking point, releasing their obscurus as an invisible ( or nearly invisible ) destructive wind. in extreme cases, they may physically transform into an obscurus [1]. usually, children possessed by an obscurus almost always die before their 10th birthdays, but as exemplified by credence barebone, a wizard with tremendous latent powers can survive longer [2]. obscurials were believed to have completely disappeared from the united states of america by 1926 according to seraphina picquery [...] an obscurus had not existed in the united states for over 200 years [3]. while still unconfirmed, ariana dumbledore was potentially an obscurial too, as the description of her "illness" given by her brother aberforth fit the description of an obscurial; "it destroyed her, what they did: she was never right again. she wouldn’t use magic, but she couldn’t get rid of it; it turned her inward & drove her mad, it exploded out of her when she couldn’t control it, & at times she was strange & dangerous. but mostly she was sweet & scared & harmless". it would also explain how, as an untrained witch, she was capable of killing her mother in an uncontrolled rage with magic [4]. sidenote, ariana dumbledore was born in 1885.

OBSCURIAL NOTES. [1] considering the fact that erik was a. born in the early 1800s b. born with the same deformities as in stage-movie combination ( which i use as reference, because continuity with icons oh my god ) c. a magical chid, he was likely abused. [2] let’s look at poto canon for erik: he’s a genius in many things, even in the 04 movie, madame giry: [about erik] he's a genius. he's an architect & designer, he's a composer & magician... a genius, monsieur!. other canon ( kay, leroux ) note that he was a magician for the shah of persia, where he designed many torture chambers. in general, if he’d been allowed to show his work to the world, he likely would’ve ben quite well loved & well known for his ridiculous amount of talent. translating those parts of various poto canon into harry potter things ( factor in that erik did, in fact, attend hogwarts, which will be explained later ), the latent potential he has is a lot. a ridiculous amount, oh my god. similarly to credence, he’d definitely make it past 10, which with his hogwarts years, he does. [3] it’s noted that obscurials hadn’t been in the UNITED STATES in over 200 years, but this is EUROPE, not america. [4] using the ariana theory in reference to the whole usa obscurial thing & factoring in ariana’s birth year being 1885, erik, born in 1832 with all of that shit stacked against him ( but with a fuckton of latent power that he gains at least some slight control over thanks to his hogwarts years ), erik may have had a lot of similar issues in emotional things, which also contributes to being an obscurial. if ariana was an obscurial, there was a fuckton of coverup for that.

ONTO HOGWARTS YEARS ( see HOGWARTS NOTES for more elaboration / misc. things, also considering erik traveled a lot in poto canon, who’s to say he was initially born in france is that even ever mentioned? anywhere??? ). erik would’ve been sorted in 1843 because maths. like other young wizards & witches, he received a wand from ollivander’s, because the family has literally been in the wandmaking business since 382 BCE. due to the core of the wand, it may not have been MADE by the ollivanders. note, the wand chooses the wizard ( or witch ) is a legit thing, so there’s trial & error. factoring in wandlore & how wand wood & core also are important, due to his ridiculous musical aptitude ( which will be across literally everything i do, that’s the whole point ), the core of his wand is horned serpent horn — this core is sensitive to parseltongue, & can warn their owners of danger by emitting a low musical tone. the noted wandmakers to use this core are isolt sayre & james steward, meaning the wand was likely purchased or whatnot by the ollivander family, but was manufactured in america. the wand is made from hornbeam — hornbeam selects for its life mate the talented witch or wizard with a single, pure passion, which some might call obsession - more kindly - vision, which will almost always be realised. hornbeam wands adapt more quickly than almost any other to their owner’s style of magic, & will become so personalised, so quickly, that other people will find them extremely difficult to use even for the most simple of spells. hornbeam wands likewise absorb their owner’s code of honour, whatever that might be, & will refuse to perform acts - whether for good or ill - that do not tally with their master’s principles. they are particularly fine-tuned & sentient wands. NOW, ACCORDING TO WANDLORE, wand length is more of a PERSONALITY based thing, so uh the examples were hagrid’s wand at 16″ because he has a big personality & umbridge’s wand being short because of her tldr shitty personality. erik is a visionary, he’s filled with passion & whatnot, refer back to literally every poto canon, he’s also reclusive but proud of his intelligence & rightfully so. according to garrick ollivander, matching a wand to a wizard solely by height is a crude measure. long wands tend to suit those with big personalities, of a more spacious & dramatic style of magic. neater wands favour elegant & refined spell-casting. particularly short wands will choose wizards whose character lacks something [x]. with all of that in mind, the tl;dr of this is the wand he received was hornbeam, horned serpent horn, 11″. the fact that erik was trained at hogwarts undoubtedly contributed to the fact that he didn’t still die as a teenager or something.

HOGWARTS NOTES. erik was sorted into into RAVENCLAW HOUSE. he lacked the gryffindor pride & courage, his cunning came from his intelligence & not from ambition or a desire to get to the top regardless of what others had to go through, he does possess hufflepuff loyalty, but only to a very small handful of people ( literally like at most maybe 2 or 3, depending on timeframe ). the pride he does posses is in his intelligence, & he highly respects that in others. he used to end up in detention here & there for fighting with other students, often because they would attempt the jackass mask grab. honestly, he’s super lucky that no one died because of the obscurus. he probably excelled at OWLS & NEWTS with scores that could’ve gotten him a lot of jobs, but uh, you know. ERIK HAS THE POTENTIAL TO CAST A PATRONUS, BUT LACKS THE HAPPY MEMORIES TO DO SO. theoretically, he has the potential to perform a great deal of powerful magic, but due to the problem of being an obscurial, the latent ridiculous power he has is mostly directed toward NOT DYING. due to this fact, he never displays his full magical potential & power in any other scenario than one where he becomes the obscurus. he graduated in 1849.

POST HOGWARTS YEARS & DEATH, again there’s a notes section for this. while the plot of poto is usually 1870, erik doesn’t make it to 1870. he makes it to the middle of 1862, giving him another 13 years to live after graduating from hogwarts. after hogwarts, erik made a living doing odd jobs, but never stayed in one place for long. often, he wished to return to hogwarts, the place he saw as the only ‘home’ he ever had. in early 1862, he demolished a good deal of shops & killed a good number of people in an uncontrolled rage. obviously, the ministry looked into this, as both muggles & wizards & witches were among the casualties. terrified at the fact that he’d lived so long as an obscurial, they sent aurors after him to eliminate him as a threat, which they technically did, but the greater majority of those sent after him also ended up dead as collateral.

POST HOGWARTS & DEATH NOTES. after his death, erik’s ghost returned to hogwarts as he always wished. at some point during albus dumbledore’s teaching career as the transfiguration professor, erik was confined to the school grounds, as he was still incredibly volatile ( dumbledore vouched for confinement rather than the most extreme option — exorcism ). he gravitates to students who are shunned, bullied, lonely, or afraid as he wishes to help them ( erik literally hates himself so much, but he also has so much empathy for others who are suffering & he doesn’t want them to suffer ).

MISC. NOTES & VARIANTS OF THE AU. variants include erik’s school years lining up with tom riddle’s school years, although other than that, nothing else changes about him. there’s also marauder’s timeframe, which is the same as everything else, but putting him in that ballpark for his hogwarts years. no matter what, erik literally despises tom riddle ( a handsome & deceptive little shit whom a great deal of people liked because he was attractive & erik just SEETHES because they can’t see tom for what he really is ). erik has been suspected of taking revenge on bullies for hurting other students, although he only ever attacks the bullies 1 from behind 2 when they’re alone. these attacks are sometimes attributed to peeves, because no one witnesses them, really. if he had been less of a mess ( even just not an obscurial ), he would’ve been interested in teaching at hogwarts. he’d absolutely adore myrtle & they’d definitely be friends ( godbless @diealive i never knew i needed this so much ). other possible friendships include severus snape & quirinus quirrell, the former due to honestly the very clear bullying, the latter also including the bullied factor & also attempts to help him have better perception of other people ( quirrell is noted to be ‘ a brilliant fellow ‘, although he was also completely deceived by voldemort; the likely conclusion is his genius is entirely academic ). he would be incredibly impressed with hermione granger. he’d probably also gravitate to neville longbottom. in the tom years & even in the marauder’s timeframe honestly ok ever since dumbledore came to be a teacher & wasn’t uh... in with grindewald, dumbledore would be his favorite faculty member. he also loves the fact that flitwick has a choir, ok.

TL;DR, hogwarts helped a very hurt obscurial survive through a hellish life, although he ultimately meets a shitty death, but gets to return to the place he called home.

It’s been MONTHS of intense nostalgia for this ship and I missed out on yuletide so here I am requesting it for Chocolate Box. Bend It Like Beckham was honestly a game-changer for me as a film and I identified so much with Jess and her drive to do something she loved in the face of familial disapproval.

The Ship: I love love love their friendship even with the pitfalls of you don’t understand how my culture effects my life but try your best to support and sometime put your foot in it BUT man, was I disappointed in later years that they left it hanging with a weird love triangle and the great beyond of American College. I’d like to see how their relationship develops after the movie, how Jules deals with Jess being better at the thing that ties them together and possibly blinds her to wow-i have-not-so-straight feelings. OR what if Jess is the one who realizes it first and panics because this is exactly what she had been swearing up and down wouldn’t happen to her less than support relatives (a new situation does not lead to new feelings, so much as understanding herself away from what is familiar) Really, I just want to see them in a happy relationship together because I was denied by the movie.

Some prompts:

Jess gets hit on a distressingly high amount of times in front of Jules. Good thing she’s mostly oblivious to it.

Future!fic retiring from the England Women’s National Team together or separate and the impact it has on the world around them. Jess imparting some words of wisdom to her younger teammates

In what situation would Jess defend Jules instead of vice versa? getting drafted for different teams and having a long distance relationship/reunion/eye opening? The Good Place Tahani Al-Jamil/Eleanor Shellstrop

I haven’t regularly watched a TV show since the 90s so TGP was a complete surprise but here I am, delighted at the innovative take on dead people in the afterlife. The humor is really my favorite thing and Eleanor’s not quite quest to be better than she was when she was living.

The Ship: The sexy skyscraper and the short troublemaker. There’s so many complementary aspects to Tahani and Eleanor and I just need everyone to get on board the Bi-train for the good of the people. I like that they’re both self-serving at their core, except Eleanor does it to prove she doesn’t care about anybody else, and Tahani does it because she cares immensely about what everybody else thinks. The height difference is also a fun dynamic.

Some prompts:

Get as wacky and wild as you want with it if you want to do an AU, just keep the dynamic of animosity to friendship to something more between them. Superheroes with unconventional powers? Star Trek-esque AU? Spy vs Spy?

A game show type-esque match making with surprising results for Tahani

Eleanor and the five times she denied caring about Tahani’s feelings

Tahani’s over the top love confession and Eleanor’s aversion to feelings come to a head

Eleanor being Tahani’s booty-call and being unable/oblivious on how to turn that into a relationship

Sense8 Felix Berner/Wolfgang Bogdanow

This show was just the right kind of weird and I’m sad they didn’t manage to continue it because the concept was really cool. Now I just have a bunch of unanswered questions to hang onto like what happened with Wolfgang after the Whispers capture.

The Ship: Pardon my language, but I fucking adore these two. Their loyalty to each other is my absolute jam. They would literally die for one another and it chokes me up because it’s completely the antithesis of the view the world has of them, which is like....vaguely criminals and amounting to nothing beyond the shady world they grew up in. I also have a TON of feelings about Wolfgang and Felix being east berliners, growing up in the aftermath of the unification and being completely aware that not everything was as rosy as Germany wanted to portray to the world. Also, their Conan the Barbarian thing? Precious.

NOTE: I totally ship Kala/Wolfgang as well so you don’t have to write her off by any means. I just focused of felix/wolfgang for this.

Some prompts:

PLEASE give me Wolfgang coming clean to Felix about the sensates and how crazy his world has become on top of the general mayhem that comes from being a Bogdanow. CANON tells us Wolfgang doesn’t lie so why does it take him so damn long to tell Felix the truth?

The weird experiments Felix comes up with to see Wolfgang not be Wolfgang or times when Felix notices someone else “in” Wolfgang and how he takes that.

Pre-sensate, Wolfgang always felt Felix like a second limb. Felix called it his “wolfy-sense”

Anything pre-sensate dealing with the misadventures of Felix and Wolfgang, growing up together, falling into sleeping together, and in love?

Wolfgang’s first lie to his uncle is that Felix is just his sidekick and not much more. Steiner knows better than to take his word for it.

AU of a different meet up: Wolfgang is reluctantly forced into being a king of Berlin, Bohn sends one Felix Brenner as a liason for a favor owed (or Felix finds his own way to meet this King of Berlin)

Felix finally meeting the other sensates especially Kala: the two most important people in Wolfgang’s life in the same room.

Westworld Maeve Millay/Hector Escaton/Teddy Flood

Westworld tickled my fancy for all things sci-fi and robots learning what is to be human and humans being gods with terrible consequences. Maeve tickled my fancy as a WoC on the show and naturally became my favorite because I’m predictable. I’m a complete sucker for the philosophy behind what the TV show is setting up, what it means to be human, what is the next step, how we in creating the hosts have possibly made our own destruction and somehow advanced ourselves. The Maze pointing to the need to suffer to be human or suffering because of your humanity is gr9.

The Ship: I think Maeve is the new force of good (in her quest to find her daughter and possibly exploring the other worlds/the outside world) to foil Dolores’ possible descent into a “rogue” element in Westworld. And Hector and Teddy will be in crosshairs of that tug of war. Hector, is the character who Maeve chooses to bring with her as an asset or something more, I think the choice behind the action is important as her whole arc is discovering what is fake and what is true behind who she is. Teddy, is part of the hero’s storyline, he’s a do-gooder but we get so many throaways on his proficiency to kill and his death is well, popular. Maeve and Teddy circle each other a lot in Westworld and I wonder what side he’ll choose, Dolores in the Host Rebellion or will he choose a different ally in Maeve?

Some prompts:

Did their repurposed lives every cross? How does that shade into their interactions now? How does Teddy view Hector and vice versa?

Maeve has to sway Teddy and Hector to her side after they get reprogrammed again, trying to spark some sort of recognition of what they already had

Gunslinging 101 for Maeve by Teddy and Hector, or how they become an Outlaw Trio in the midst of a Host rebellion

The Defenders Claire Temple/Colleen Wing

This is pure self-indulgence because they have minimal interaction in the show but I absolutely loved how they played off each other. #colleendeservesbetter and Claire is totally it.

The Ship: I like how they’re always sidelined and yet aren’t defined by that, like they know perfectly well how useful they are and aren’t afraid to get creative. As a team-up, it’s the whole healer/fighter thing that they’ve tried like multiple times with Claire (no offense to Luke and Daredevil) and that bit where they reassure each other about being the stable rocks of the Defenders??? That was the moment I really thought these two could work.

Some prompts:

Gimme all the fluff and comfort and trying to be normal in a world where superheroes show up at your door to pull you into stupid adventures every week. Bonus points for including other supporting cast members such as Foggy, Trish, and Misty

Five times The Defenders cockblocked Colleen and Claire with their unnecessary drama

A kidnapping attempt by the clueless idiot of the week underestimating both of them.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (2015) Illya Kurakin/Gaby Teller/Napoleon Solo

I’m still waiting for the sequel that will never happen for this movie. It was a great spy movie and I loved all the details from the villainess to undercover fiances to daring escapes and drinking on rooftops.

The Ship:My perfectly tailored spy ot3. i absolutely came out of the movie saying they needed to simmer in some UST before finding inappropriate situations to tease each other. Illya actually getting to choose for himself instead of holding on to this ideal KGB agent. Gaby being fiercely protective of both men and wanting them both without a doubt. Napoleon having something steady and real for once in his life without strings attached

Some Prompts:

Casefics that are frustrating exercises in why won’t you just bang each other already from all parties involved, bonus if they have to keep a cover from getting compromised

Using their talents to show affection in non-ordinary ways and someone being oblivious, while the other is slowly catching on to the game

Just a good old casefic because at least one of them has to have a competency kink

A different meeting: they’re all crooked as they come and have no problems with it

Where they go in their down time between assignments and how they manage their relationship (or hiding it)

Gaby’s not the damsel in distress, Napoleon is.

DC Cinematic Universe Diana Prince/Lois Lane

Two ladies who know what it is to lose a hero who is consequently the man they love. Also, Diana’s bisexuality is into the whole I’ll eat your balls for breakfast thing because hello, her mother raised her on an island full of Amazons.

The Ship:Height difference! Ladies who can handle themselves in diametrically different ways and yet still know the importance of being vulnerable and affectionate and the power of love. I do like the dynamic of Lois being this extraordinary human to all the supes because she never gives up and is bravely stubborn about her goals and morals and not afraid to call anyone out on their bullshit.
