Fun Fact
BuzzFeed published a report claiming that Tumblr was utilized as a distribution channel for Russian agents to influence American voting habits during the 2016 presidential election in Feb 2018.
One piece really IS the perfect shounen, isn’t it? Luffy has already become my favorite shounen protagonist ever by far (outcompeting mob somehow?????? Did not think that would ever happen. Luffy best boy.) and I’m 43 episodes in. Battle set pieces so good I’ve literally started clapping at the climax every time. Luffy just stood up from the top of rubble of arlong park and I started a golf clap.
Why was this the one of the big three I slept on. Why did I watch a significant amount of naruto when I was getting into anime like a decade ago but no one piece. Like at least I’m getting into it now but I can’t believe I let the art style and the length of the manga keep me from appreciating this absolute genre masterpiece for so long. What was I doing.
Forgetting, of course, that the primary theme is about life changing and having to be okay with letting go of the past even though the future is uncertain.
More importantly, forgetting that one of the main threads of this throughout the series is Tohru's grief (and guilt) over her mother's death.
....
Well, you know what, my therapist told me to engage with grief as homework the past couple of weeks, so between this and starting Anohana again I THINK IT COUNTS.
I love the absurdity of One Piece. They'll go to a new island and suddenly there's some guy with a talking pigeon that wears a tie on his shoulder and one character will notice and go "that's so weird" and then nobody ever worries about it again. They don't completely gloss over it—it IS all noticeably strange—and sometimes a little time is even given to explain the world's mechanics—and sometimes it's just a pigeon that wears a tie and talks. What're you gonna do? Cry about it?
Okay so I DID watch some more one piece. Like. Ten minutes of it. I think I get the appeal now. Luffy is kind of a perfect shounen protagonist isn’t he.
