What Stede hears: "I regret sleeping with you. I don't want the sort of relationship that you're after."

What Stede says: "It was a fine fish. It was... whatever. I was just trying to make you feel good!"

What Stede means: "I only cared about the fish because you cared about it, and I care about you. I liked the fish because it made you happy. Ordinarily, I'm ambivalent about fish."

What Ed hears: "I lied to you. I didn't care about your achievement I was just placating you to get what I wanted."

What Ed says: "Here's the news: I'm leaving. I got a job on a little fishing boat and I'm leaving. I'm a fisherman now."

What Ed means: "I think I need to be away from you to figure out who I am, because I haven't been able to do that while we're together, and your lifestyle now is the life I'm trying to leave behind."

What Stede hears: "I've made a decision to leave you and have a life without you. I don't value what we have enough to work with you to find a solution, I'd prefer to end it."

What Stede says: "Oh, Ed. Seriously? You're not a fisherman."

What Stede means: "I think you're using this plan to escape and avoid your problems. It sounds like you're pretending to be someone else. It seems to me like an impulsive decision and I am concerned."

What Ed hears: "I don't support this ambition. I think you're incapable. I don't think you can be different from what you have always been."

This is the kind of analysis done in therapeutic environments. When I put what they mean, it's not just a rephrasing but a boiling down to the core issue. I could go on to the rest of the dialogue but do you see the continuing ship-in-the-night miscommunication?? It's tripartite:

failing to express one's current emotional reality with the most accurate and clear language, often because that reality is not fully understood to oneself,

misinterpreting the other's language, due to preexisting sensitivities and defensiveness about one's own understanding of the situation,

increasing frustration and sense of personal attack that results from those misinterpretations, which perpetuates and worsens the poor communication.

Importantly, this kind of pattern means you miss the best and most important kernels of communication in an exchange because you're reacting to the more inflammatory parts.

Stede: "This can be whatever we want it to be." (I am willing to make changes to our arrangement so that you're happy). Ed: "I don't even know who I am! Alright? I know I don't want to be a pirate. And you, you're blowing up, you're the toast of the town." (I think we want different things. You're just starting a journey that I've already finished).

With those two bits alone they could've sorted this out. The first is the answer to the second. But they didn't -- couldn't -- latch onto it because all their other baggage was getting in the way.

And I'm being proven correct that this is what is happening, because I have seen next to nothing on here about the above two lines, only reactionary takes of fans also focusing on the inflammatory parts because of their predispositions. You're doing an encore performance of what they're doing.

Point being, there are no bad guys in this scene, just repeated system failure!

EVERYBODY SHUT UP I WANT TO TALK ABOUT WHAT THE FUCK IS IN ED’S CUP!!!

So in this scene the table is set for Stede and Ed to have breakfast together. There are two cups on the table. There is also a teapot. Jack comes to sit down at the table and pours out rum like he’s the two shots of vodka lady, first he pours what I’m guessing is 4 oz minimum just eyeballing it into Ed’s cup and then roughly the same amount into his own. (I’m not a bar tender so I could be wrong on that guestimate).

So there are 2 options here. 1, the less funny one, Jack is pouring that into an empty cup. Option number 2, a very possible option that I think is the funniest fucking thing ever. Stede or Roach or whoever has put tea to Ed’s specifications into that fucking cup and Jack just decided to booze it up. We know that Ed likes his tea with a dollop of milk and 7 sugars. What I am proposing to you dear reader is that that cocktail that Ed is drinking at 9 am on a tuesday contains 1 dollop milk, 7 sugars (be that sugar cubes or some other measurement), tea(which may or may not be caffeinated, it’s funnier if it is though) and however much rum Calico Jack, known frat boy, decided was the right amount.

Weird, oddly cold (then hot, then cold again) spring here. My violets never really flourished. Thankfully, a friend gathered and sent some to me so that I could make an infused syrup*.

Not the deepest colour, alas, but I'm still learning. Did make a delicious cocktail, though. Calling it the Polite Menace in honour of our favourite pop culture Gentleman Pirate.

*don't worry; I shooed all the critters out of there before adding scalding water.

I know my last experience with a season ending on a note everyone hated and unanimously tore to fucking shreds for destroying the story on every level was... atypical. Lockdown. 6 month mass hysteria at minimum. Conspiracy theories that were, like, real things we had on camera. There was a Twitter wedding. Creative fervor that broke 100k fics on AO3.

Like. I know this is not a rational point of comparison and I'm not going to expect anything in my lifetime to match it 🤣

But.

If that was the highest high of post-season fandom engagement built on a cocktail of tasting everything you ever wanted AND the absolutely lethal levels of spite and swearing to eat showrunners' hearts in the marketplace, then whatever the fuck is going on after OFMD S2 is the opposite of that.

OFMD S1 was a huge fandom explosion. One silly little streaming show that had a gay kiss and then it skyrocketed. Fic numbers were soaring, high activity fic and meta engagement lasted for at least four months, it was constantly trending and flooding the dash... Like, fucking hell, over a year and a half after the immediate finale fervor it beat Stucky in the top ships bracket?!? To the point I was willing to give it what felt like due credit toward its potential as a future juggernaut ship. Not guaranteed, of course, but the potential was there.

In that context, new content should be a blow out party. Which it kinda was pulling off as it was airing, but looking back now? Not even quite a month later?

The effect of S2 on the fandom is like... a blip. Possibly over already.

New fic numbers started dropping off the moment the finale aired and have returned to deep hiatus levels. It's dropped off trending and streaming leaderboards... I'm very curious to see the first tumblr Week in Review since the finale, though we're still waiting due to the holiday.

Like, I've even popped on to scroll a few Izzy hater blogs that I know loved the finale out of morbid curiosity what they were up to, and I'm telling you... if I hadn't just watched the new season I'd think they were still over a year into hiatus. Saw some standard bitching about the izcourse / Edward takes (aka the one thing that kept them going all hiatus), they're currently passing around posts mocking one specific long OFMD version of TJLC I'm just hearing of, the same BTS gifsets everyone else is thrilled by... But barely any new meta or discussions. There's like 2 people posting actual analysis of S2 that's getting reblogged and they aren't even names I recognize from the hiatus. Nor is it particularly interesting to read. 🤷‍♀️

In July of 2022 I could pop onto a random OFMD blog and scroll through a dozen enthusiastic Stede or BlackBonnet metas about jacket colors or that moth from 1x07 or lighthouse symbolism or whatever. Now the new stuff has the same energy as posts from June 2023. It's borderline dead. And this is what it's like when there's an active campaign to engage fandom and Renew as a Crew?

(I will say fanartists are bringing some energy and there's some lovely pieces being passed around, which I do think the Renew as a Crew campaign is helping to boost?)

Even the hundreds of people saying it was a beautiful season and they loved it so much don't seem to be finding it a very engaging or inspiring season.

It's such a turn, like, what the fuck.

I have returned once again with more ofmd gnome content!

Fairy!Stede the invalid, under Gnome!Ed's expert care, and Stede admiring Ed's, uh, tattoos, nothing but his tattoos, fine draftsmanship there!

There was an optical illusion in the last set, formed by Ed's hat and a curtain, that looked like a beach umbrella when the picture was thumbnail-sized. So I decided I had to make that happen for real and gave Stede a cocktail umbrella parasol, based on that one bts pic of Rhys. And one of the few plot ideas I have for this silly little AU is Ed taking Stede back to the fairy village once he feels better and they attend a party together. It... goes about as well as it did in episode 5, but at least the boys look dashing.

Also: while the sentence "Fairy Stede was in a loveless arranged marriage with his fairy wife" is both Too Stupid and Too Melodramatic for this AU, I did want to draw Mary as a daffodil fairy, I think it suits her. Perhaps they're just friends in this universe. I hemmed and hawed about coloring these for ages mostly because I was terrified of drawing her tiger swallowtail wings, but they turned out alright, whew!

On symbolism in OFMD (And like. Understanding what is LITERALLY spelled out for us?)

Stede - The Lighthouse (textual - explicit)

Mary - The Lighthouse (textual - implicit/by association)

Ed - The Kraken (textual - explicit)

Izzy - The Anchor (interpretive - implicit)

Stede (and Mary, by association) is represented by The Lighthouse. From his wedding, to his impending death, to his return to sea. 'We are to be lighthouses to each other', 'It's a lighthouse, I should have been one for my family [. . .] We need to be a lighthouse', [arm up like a signal to his marooned crew]. These are textually explicit instances of symbolism. He is helping guide his crew towards better lives, he is doing the same for Ed, and he is also the thing that causes them all to crack up on the rocks and sink to the depths that The Kraken inhabits.

Ed is represented by The Kraken. From the implicit fear/respect of everyone who knows of him, to his murdering his father, to his 'murdering' Lucius/maiming Izzy/marooning and kidnapping Stede's crew. 'The kraken didn't kill my dad, I did, I'm the kraken', 'I am the kraken' [self affirmingly before he goes to maim Izzy]. These are textually explicit instances of symbolism. The kraken was often drawn on maps/charts to represent dangerous waters. It is a warning against danger but it is also a form of protection. Ed embodies the kraken when he is hurt. He kills his father to protect himself/his mother. He 'kills' Lucius and maims Izzy and maroons most of the crew to protect himself from the hurt that Stede caused when he left and from the consequences of what continuing to show his vulnerability might lead to if Izzy is right (which he is, outside of The Revenge at least) and if he doesn't have Izzy in his corner anymore. He is hurt and he brings everyone he can down into the depths with him.

Izzy is the anchor. From his desire for stability, his aversion to change, his desire to protect what is important to him (himself, Ed, and HIS crew through the reputation of Blackbeard). 'Bored as you might be, if we don't come up with a plan soon, we're all gonna fucking die', 'Your lot's days of lying around doing fuck all are through. Starting today you're all going to be getting specific duties', 'Bonnet's done something to my bosses brain', '[mid resignation rant] losing several of our crew', 'I'm not dying. Not for him and not for you', 'loyalty to your captain, above all else [. . .] I couldn't sit by and let you ruin yourself for that twat', [is tied to an anchor by a crew that don't like him as captain because of the way he enforces the norm that he inhabited as a pirate (which Fang and Ivan ALSO inhabited before The Revenge, and which Fang returns to once Blackbeard/The Kraken is the one enforcing it again)]. These are interpretive instances of symbolism. Anchors keep a ship safe but they also keep it unmoving. Izzy wants the normalcy and security of Ed's Blackbeard (who people surrender to on sight, which means no danger) but Ed finds that life boring because there is no challenge and there is no change. He goes down with the ship when it cracks up on the rocks and he is content in the depths because that is what is familiar to him. He does not know that iron rusts.

And nobody is a molotov cocktail.

Except for Wee John. Wee John can be a molotov cocktail.
