Vidding absolutely counts as a fandom, and Escapade is key to the history of vidding.
Notice how the terminology shifts over the course of Escapade: The first year, it’s ‘songtapes’ being shown, then ‘songvid’ or ‘song video’ predominates for much of the 90s, and then we move on to ‘vidding’ and ‘vids’.
The vidshow moves from being more of a curated presentation of old favorites to having a lot of premieres. It goes from just one night to two, then back to one. Vidshow panels where you just watch vids for a whole panel slot come and go. In 1998, vid review starts up: This is a Sunday morning panel for in-depth critique of the vids shown the previous night and is a famously contentious part of the con. And then there was this:
2002, Friday, 6pm - VividCon Discussion (Come discuss the proposed VividCon, tentative time/location, August/Chicago.)
Yep. Escapade was where Vividcon was born!
By 2008, people were talking about how vidding had moved on from Escapade. In 2011 a vidshow retrospective was added to try to counter the lack of vidding-centric programming. There was a big resurgence for a few years, including such hard-hitting topics as:
2016 - Vidding Aesthetics (”Why is there so much show audio in this vid?", "Why didn't that cut hit on the beat?", "What do you mean 'Cheesy?' She's Celine Dion!" and other immortal questions of vidding aesthetics. If you've ever watched a vid, we want your opinions.)
Why yes, it was my panel. Why do you ask?
There were rounds of warnings wank, caused by Oz vids and by that time Absolute Destiny sent a vid of a violent coming of age film.
Check out this 1994 panel description from Fanlore:
"[The technology in fandom panel] included several things that people can now do in-home that they couldn't do five years ago: cutting and splicing songs on Macintosh computers (to remove inappropriate choruses, verses, or the word "girl"); the soon-to-be-easier ability to select different people from different clips and combine them onto a new background (also for songtapes); printing vhs video frames directly to computer screens, printers and/or color copiers (for fun); and zines and/or libraries on disk. Most of the new technology possibilities were followed by comments that the actual work we can do is illegal [...]. Which comments were followed by the statements that seventeen years ago, writing and publishing a slash fanzine was illegal.... [...] a few people [...], talked to me at different times throughout the con about getting accounts or modems [...]”
This is interesting not just technologically but aesthetically. Is the word ‘girl’ bad in a slashvid? Different communities have disagreed.
Conversations about digital vidding and digital vs. VCR really heated up around 2001, much later than you might expect if you’re coming out of an AMV background. While most of Youtube vids on Sony Vegas--a Windows-only program--at Escapade, Mac has been the norm.
The topics that have remained big are vidding aesthetics, including things like how to make an effective pimp vid, discussions of hosting options and where the community is hanging out now, and how-tos for people who want to get into vidding.
(And before anyone asks, the answer is that you should download DaVinci Resolve because it’s free and cross-platform. And you should encode with h.264 because it’s widely compatible.)
The 2020 vidding panels are:
Vidding 101: The Vid Bunny Farm So you’ve had an idea, and it’s gnawing on your leg? Or maybe you have too many vid ideas and can’t choose? Or you want to make a vid but don’t know where to even start? Aspiring fan vidders, unsure-vidders-to-be, and experienced vidders welcome alike to share vid bunnies, brainstorm together, and talk about the processes of conceptualizing a vid.
Vidding Genres Then & Now We’ve come a long way from “living room vids” vs ‚”con vids‚” or have we? Let’s talk about evolving fanvid genres, from ship vids to AU vids to multivids, from character vids to fake trailers, from genre-bending vids to long form vids to cosplay music videos, and more. Let’s talk about all the genres of fan videos floating around YouTube, Billibilli, AO3 and beyond, and also consider if the old school genre terms still apply.
Escapade has had many, many vidding panels. So many that even I feel the need for a readmore. I’ve pulled out the meta ones and left off some single-fandom vidshows and whatnot. Sorry for the wonky formatting, but Tumblr, in its infinite wisdom, seems to have removed the horizontal rule feature.
1991  - "Classic" songtapes were shown at 9:00 on Friday.
1994 - Song Video Roundtable (Bring works in progress or finished works you're having difficulty with for a quick jump-start. Open to anyone who enjoys videos as well as the people who make them.)
1994 - Songvid Editing (Authors get edited and usually have to do at least one rewrite of a story. Artists have erasers. What stops songvid makers from doing drafts and re-edits of their work? Let's talk about editing style (what cuts to use for best emphasis) and technique (how to physically do the inserts.)) [Notice how much of an issue editing is. These are VCR vids, edited in order, so insert edits are a gigantic pain.]
1995 - Techno Vids—Media Cannibals, (What's available with the new computer hardware and software? Can have Bodie & Doyle screwing on screen if we apply the right touches. Should we? How and when?) [Yes. Sweatily. Always.]
1995 - Video Workshop (video makers & watchers discuss the art.)
1996 - Music Video Critique and Workshop (Roundtable critique of videos, how to tell/recognize story, POV, rhythm. Also, tricks of the trade.)
1997 - Music Choice for Song Vidding (Finding the right song for the fandom is almost as great a challenge as finding the right clips for the song. Discussing what to look for in music choice.)
1997 - Songvid Critique (An exploration of different elements of media vids, with an emphasis on aesthetics. We'll look at segments of different songs to see how the images were used in conjunction with the varied rhythms of the music, and to enhance the mood.)
1998 - Media Cannibals Self-Indulgence Hour (Stunned to look back on vidding effort, MC plans to show -- and talk about -- some of their best and worst vids, pointing out some happy accidents and some annoying f*ckups. This is a great panel for people who want to learn about vid-making, the work that goes into them, and what to look for when watching them.)
1998 - Con Vids vs Living Room Vids (What are the elements that make a music vid accessible to a large crown, or more appropriate to an intimate setting?)
1998 - Music Video Show Review (Selected vids from Saturday's show will be replayed and discussed for their aesthetic, technical and musical choices. Open to all, for feedback and fun.) [Perhaps the start of the Sunday vidshow critique, which was also such a feature of Vividcon?]

1999 - Sunday Morning Vid Review (Selected vids from Saturday's show will be replayed and discussed for the aesthetic, technical and musical choices. Open to all, for feedback and fun.)
2000 - Vidding Basics (Or "you want to learn how to make a music vid, huh?"—Carol and Stacy will take a group of novice vidders from the basics of what you need on your VCR, to all your hardware set ups, thru the selection of music, to actually doing some hands-on putting a dip (or two) into a music vid. So if you're interested in music videos and you want to try your hand at making one... you know what panel you need to go to.)
2000 - Songvid Appreciation 101 (Remember Art Appreciation? "Why is this painting good?" Well, we're doing the same for vids, using examples from the ESCAPADE Video Show. Let's take advantage of the fact that we've all just seen these vids, and use them to illustrate how to do cool things in a vid. We'll look at clever POV changes, appropriate choice of music to theme, skillful uses of musical changes within a vid, storytelling techniques, changes of mood, cutting on the beat vs. cutting on the lyric line, the different approaches to serious and humorous vids, or single fandom vs. multiple fandom vids, and more.)
2001 - Vidding Workshop (2 hours) (This workshop will cover: a comparison between digital and analog vidding; a how-to for analog vidding; a how-to for digital vidding; and a discussion of the artistic side of vidding, including song and clip choices, and techniques to avoid.)
2001 - Impact of Computer Tools on Vidding (Vidding used to be push-and-pause between 2 vers, and a LOT of patience. Now with I-movie and Final Cut and Macintosh G4's, the technological leap is here and it isn't going anywhere. Are vids better for the technology available to them?)
2001 - Songvid Appreciation (2 hours) (Comments and feedback on vids you saw last night, Escapade style.)
2002 - Art Manipulation Using Photoshop (A how-to overview, with demonstrations in Photoshop, and more detailed techniques for creating photo manipulations, web graphics, and zine graphics. Depending on interest, creation of vid titles and overlay vid graphics may be included.)

2002 - Vid Revision (The art and craft of revising vids—how you get from a song in your heart and a bunch of clips on your hard drive to the final product. We'll show multiple versions of a few vids, critique them, and talk about what improves a vid. No technical knowledge needed; come whether you make vids or just like watching them.)

It will touch on hardware requirements, software options, and basic concepts of non-linear editing and what makes for a good vid, and, time and tech permitting, it may also include a demonstration of some of the editing basics. There will be handouts.)
2003 - Vid Show Review (A discussion (and literal re-viewing in some cases) of some of the vids from the Saturday night show.)
2003 - Also Premiering Vid Show (The "Also Premiering..." vid show is for vids premiered in the last year that aren't going to be shown in the Friday or Saturday shows. This will be an informal setting and we'll go by participant preference — if folks want to see a vid a second time, or want some time to chat about it, or if a vidder wants some feedback on it, we can decide to do that on-the-fly. If you'd like to show any vids in this show, just bring them to the show itself. There are no hard-and-fast limits on number of vids; we'll just go with what shows up and take turns until we run out of time. Afterwards, consider going out to lunch with other participants to talk about the vids!)

2004 - Editing Techniques and Vidding (How can you edit together clips from widely different episodes and movies into a seamless whole? Thumbnail Blaster Review and Bonus
Welcome to my Thumbnail Blaster Review and Demo YouTube first became popular as an on the net platform regarding musicians to generate some sort of name for themselves and achieving extra views was, and still is definitely, the ultimate goal regarding video content creators. Back in thumbnail blaster , people would use deceptive title, tags, and thumbnails to a great extent to obtain more views and now days Google and yahoo has won this battle with spam by simply integrating new voice and image identification technology to get an idea regarding precisely what a video is about when compared with what the subject material creator promises in the particular title, tags, and description. This helps to offer people who have a much far better consumer experience in order to something up on YouTube. Online video media content creators are nowadays up against having to basically make quality video tutorials that people will appreciate and to get more views, this has to be observed by sufficient people to find the appropriate person who will introduce the idea on his net site, at least share it on Facebook or myspace. Legally consequently, Google's leading goal will be user working experience over this content provider's watch count up, however some industry experts claim the new changes in order to the algorithm will lead to old videos, that folks have already observed, attract more attention than new versions and could actually create it tough for the particular user to find fresh new content in search benefits intended for popular search phrases. So, how does a video clip content creator this year beat the latest changes for you to the YouTube Algorithm? Make Videos Like Never Prior to Create a Following Comment The Way into the Top Away from Site Search engine optimization Know The particular Difference Between Junk And even Optimization Generate Video tutorials Much like Never Before With YouTube's 92 Billion web page opinions a 30 days plus soaring, a video must be unique for it to pick up reputation. Planning a video clip and server scripting are now a must along together with picture quality. By comparing the particular movies with millions involving views into the lesser involving the tribes, you can see that high definition and exceptional lighting are two typical traits shared by this just about all viewed videos. This kind of doesn't entail you possess to get an high priced HD camera to find more views. Dailymotion possesses a set of formatting tickets, again to aid provide a better person experience. yt: crop=16: nine yt: stretch=16: dokuz yt: quality=high Use these kind of tags to eliminate window boxing and poor video level of quality if you do not have access to HI-DEF equipment. Pay attention to your video's thumbnail options careful to not be flagged for spam. "OMG" deals with are popular thumbnail models just providing it is what will be within it. The. 25. 5 various plus. 75 points on your movie used to help be what determined the thumbnail selections when uploading. With so much maltreatment, Yahoo came up along with the bright plan in order to use the three lengthiest movies from your online video and semi-randomly picking a point in the three schedule points. Audio tracks and impression root record names happen to be also added in the formula to better give ideal thumbnail alternatives. Spammers cannot just add a quick photo flash at typically the halfway stage of his or her videos to get even more opinions. Build a Next As with Twitter, Twits, and MySpace, Youtube . com is also a social networking system. Being mixed up in community is a must for brand-new and even old video information inventors looking to turn into popular on YouTube. Create your channel around a specific niche market that has a good mid-sized level of opposition. Visit similar channels together with comment on their video clips with sincere compliments as well as queries. Treat your subscriber's video clips the same technique so you are not necessarily to work as a dormant range in their request give. The old SUB4SUB approach is still being used and has cultivated directly into its own community or perhaps niche. If your market is teenagers, go intended for it! Be careful definitely not to be called out and about being a spammer because typically the idea of, "You subscribe to me and I will certainly subscribe to you" is often frowned upon by people of a professional background. YouTube picks upwards in seriously repeated reviews plus auto-marks them like junk e-mail so just work with a SUB4SUB profile impression and be active on this SUB4SUB channels in the Youtube . com community. Set aside a day to work about building the following with other social networking sites such while Facebook, Twitter, plus Bebo. This expands your own right away to those who don't have a channel on Youtube . com which often surprisingly enough tends to make up for the vast majority of web site's 92 billion guests every single month. Comment Your Approach For the Top Uploading a good video 2 times a few days and commenting with your customers movies and stations the working day before is an excellent tip of thumb. Being consistent on doing so is usually the work area of the full thing. However, by doing this anyone brand yourself using your clients and build a attention among them which starts off the particular snowball effect associated with even more landscapes together with subscribers when they think and share your video clips. This is why you want to help stay within your niche. When leaving comments, end up being sincere about what anyone model. Never just declare a pair of words and get away from. This totally defeats the purpose and is also not really planning to make people want to know who else left said remark. Leave comments people wish on their videos in addition to share the particular comment upon Facebook and Twitting in order to make it show right up as a "linked comment" on top of this brief review feed. Each moment the fans from Twitter or maybe Twits clicks in it, often the comment is moved time for the top rated of the comment nourish. Be creative in your own reviews and it may possibly get thumbed up furthermore gaining more and whole lot more fascination towards the article author of mentioned comment. This ultimate goal here is in order to compliment the online video media owner's work which brands the username and channel now when your video tutorials turn up in their subscription give, it will probably be hard to avoid. Off Web page Optimization Below is more "work" of which has to be completed in order to maneuver your videos to this best of search effects. When people are looking for anyone, it is best to help be easy to find. Just applying a lot of tags consumers are searching for just isn't going to slice the particular cake. Google wants to see back links on well-known internet sites leading to the video to support your says of everything you have because your title. Should a well-known web site has a hyperlink to your video using the particular phrases in your title, it gives PAGE RANK things for that phrase after a certain amount of moment. However, when you go around posting not related hyperlinks, probabilities are it will always be taken out and wouldn't count up since some sort of back hyperlink anyway as a result of time component threshold. Post your movie to other web-sites related to your niche and also participate in forum chats together with post your video clip because a good hyperlink when it is in connection with often the debate. You have to maintain it related and it need to add value in order to the discussion. If the links get taken off, that will have a invert effect on your lookup results placement so become sure and respect often the terms and conditions involving forums that will allow back links to movies and net sites. Know The Change Between Spam And Marketing The fine line among spam and optimization is critical to breaking through often the bulk amounts of videos on YouTube if persons interested in your stuff will even know this is out there. For anyone who is Fred, plus your personal station (Lucas) says your age is usually 33, it is highly unlikely you will have called out for lying about your age when an individual created your account. If anyone are like many various other Youtube . com celebrities and the explanation abounds with advertising your own personal social networks together with Tee shirt, jersey sales instead of describing the video, you may well not get referred to as out and about either. However, chances are you are usually not necessarily a Youtube . com movie star and if you abide by suit, it is merely a new matter of time ahead of you are forbidden through the site. When picking a title for your video clip, you must be creative and apply thoughts that are proceeding to get results from yahoo and google at the same time. Decide on a good search name you wish to be found simply by (that best describes the video) and use this in your title. Engines like google like wide variety so put in a few support words towards your phrase. For example: Target term: Remote Control Garden Mower A superb title would likely be: Remote Control Yard Mower vs. Steep Hills Write a brief description while using target phrase merely once towards the top nevertheless not really since the first term. Be organic and talk to your viewers. This tags for the online video media need to be specific to your own target term with together with without quotations. By way of example: "remote control garden mower" out of the way control garden mower. After the calendar month of positive person allergic reactions, you will observe your online video media climbing the charts. For competitive keyword phrases, your movie has in order to produce lots of positive viewer reaction before it will eventually show up on best of search engine results and gradually on Google as a good online video media result. Patients, tough work, and reliability happen to be a must. You will want to add videos on a regular basis most with a little different targeted phrases pertaining to your niche. The idea is a lot regarding work. Yet , when a person get your first movie up to a , 000, 000 views, you can be hooked in YouTube, wearing Vimeo T-shirts, and even making tutorials to help others.

Hi guys. I’m going to cautiously title this ‘About Zimbio, Destiel, my personal struggle with the idea of wlw vs. mlm, and why what we achieved in the vote today says a lot about our magnificent fandom’.
This is a reminder in advance that I make generalizations but I don’t mean any harm by them. I’m happy to discuss this topic and capitulate on some things, because my experience of shows is extremely limited right now (unless I want to watch them in French). Just like Dean I say ‘we’ a lot but please assume sometimes I mean ‘I’, I by no means make any claim to speak for all of the following groups at any point: bisexuals, mlm shippers, wlw shippers, television executives, social media marketers, the mainstream audience, destiel shippers--etc, etc, you get the drift.) If any of the following upsets you, please let me know, it’s not my intent to cause any harm, only reassure my friends that they did a good job.
I promised I was going to write a post on this, because I’ve seen just a little mumbling and unhappiness that Destiel didn’t make it through in the semis. I get it, it’s only natural that it’s going to lead to some hurt feelings, but I wanted to really put across to you all why I say I was proud of us for our semi-final performance, rather than you just take it for granted.
We are an old fandom. Thirteen years is a long time; it makes Supernatural the longest single run fantasy/sci fi series on American TV (and I mean I think it’s unfair to compare it to non American shows like Doctor Who anyway just on pure numbers, especially since Who has gone through thirteen fourteen? fifteen? are we counting radio drama? actors in the lead role; it’s like a different show every time.) So. It’s had a superb run. Fantasy/sci fi shows are typically considered to be niche, not massive hits (comparatively speaking; SPN isn’t Grey’s Anatomy or NCIS I’ll grant). But what networks are finally waking up to is the power of the fandom of those ‘niche’ shows, dedicated viewing power which can grow a network’s brand, particularly online, and networks are eager to wrangle that.
This modern era of television is fandom’s era of television. Netflix are promoting gamification of television watching (even for kids) as well as choose your own adventure style TV. Binging and rewatching box sets is a whole thing now, not just the domain of the “geek”, and shows which can convince people to stick around and watch something instead of moving on when they run out of material--they’re the ones gaining success, while traditional shows slip further and further as they fail to capture new demographics. We’re making strong social media contracts with the creators and actors of our shows, and making it clear to them - in a way that is increasingly being recognized for the opportunity it represents - that there must be give and take with modern audiences, especially if you seek gratification through social media. (I read a great article I reblogged that called it the ‘Brandom’ effect.)
It’s wonderful, and it’s terrifying, because both fans and creators don’t know what to do with it. They can give fans too much power and the show goes off the rails, or deny it to them entirely, and earn only vitriol. Some shows rub their power right in the face of their fans and increasingly they pay for it. Some showrunners are outright incapable of talking to their fans at all without being respectful (I’m looking at you The 100), and some fans are ghastly, aggressive and outright disrespectful in pursuing what they want (it is a different thing showing joy over your ship as it is to dox actors and send their wives hate mail). Some showrunners, instead, are more embracing of their fans, like the Earpers, and if you want an idea of how actors should be engaging with fans, check out David Haydn Jones’ twitter. That man is a saint. It’s a delicate game of mutual respect, and occasional drama, and intent is the name of the game: do you have good intent, is it honest? People crave honesty on the internet where everything and everyone is fake--and that honestly is a tough thing to achieve when studios are too heavily concentrating on their bottom line.
So, this is a changing landscape, like I said, and people are struggling with new marketing techniques, trying to find their place in the world, running into walls when they realize that in fact they don’t understand their queer audience members. When something works, shows are very quick to jump right into it, almost relieved to have evidence that if they do X thing, their fans won’t all jump ship in horror, but here’s the thing, networks are in a lot of ways far slower to respond than shows. If you want to do something, you have to prove to the person holding the purse strings that it’s a profitable endeavor. Producers are set in their ways, especially old school producers, not realizing how quickly the landscape is changing, and writers are fighting against that all the time, because they’re often a lot more in touch with the creative fandoms they’re trying to inspire. Many have come from fandoms themselves. Queer writers should mean more queer storylines, right? But it means fighting money men to make it happen. Oftentimes that leads to the whole ‘one queer ship is enough’ standpoint, and when it comes down to it, those money men are more likely to put stock in safe investments, in proven investments. Consequently, wlw is flourishing because it draws in audiences without losing them. It’s arguably less risky to make Alex Danvers gay than Castiel. It’s more PC, accepted by wider audiences, groundwork laid by Dark Angel and Buffy in my own recent memory. When good results come from featuring those kinds of ships, they appear increasingly on TV, and it’s AWESOME. There were 16 wlw ships in Zimbio March Madness, and 11 of them got through all the way to 8vs8. There were only 2 mlm ships in 8vs8, and 3 het ships. Internet fandom, passionate and social and dedicated? It speaks, and it says ‘More LGBT rep please’.
We’re in a transitional period. Changes are coming, but when you look at the big mlm ships of the last few years, you can see the uphill climb that’s still ahead of us. I spoke with our Hannigram and Johnlock friends last year about what their experience with this was like. (I haven’t spoken to Sterek folks, but I know there’s disappointment from that front too). Johnlock shippers are largely furious about how explicitly the finale no-homoed their ship when there was absolutely no reason to. Having watched the finale myself, I feel like they really went hard against shippers explicitly. Hannigram suffered too. I haven’t finished S3 even now, but what I recall of the conversation went like this: they’re together, but there was a kiss that didn’t make it to air, and then the show was cancelled. In any case, what I’m saying right here is that this is part of a pattern, a theme I’m struggling with, where mlm fans are dispirited and disappointed and feeling disrespected by the very mainstream shows they’re watching.
(Which isn’t, I’ll quickly note, that I’m saying the same isn’t true of wlw audiences. The last two ships in Zimbio this year are non canon ships, and the fans of both have been hurt by the shows they watch, but they still keep coming back and watching the show. Swanqueen is ending, but the pair have been consistently mirrored - dark and light - with the emotional journey of the show largely being made over the shared custody? I don’t know, they changed it every week while I was watching it of Emma’s son. Supercorp is clearly full of eye sex thanks to the actress’ chemistry (and McGrath is so gorgeous she’d have chemistry with a brick wall) and yet has been outright mocked by the show’s cast. If that sounds familiar to Destiel fans, I almost want to say that Supercorp have it worse; just as with Swanqueen, they’re often told simply to shut up because there's already wlw rep on the show.)
But where shows are willing to go there now, diminished risk is the key, especially as resale value of shows reflects multiple, competitive platforms constantly needing to purchase content to fill their airspace. Naked women, women kissing and women having sex - bisexual women who are explicitly still available to men - that sells, but as far as I can tell networks are struggling to sell the same narrative about mlm. Maybe that’s my perspective only, maybe that’s me watching the wrong shows (and not at all because I don’t enjoy looking at women’s bodies, I do, but variety is the spice of life) Look at the outright surprise last year when GOT gave us a beautiful, pus covered, full screen dick. GOT, of course, which is insulated because it is a Number One performer. I present to you, in terms of dicks on screen, American Gods, then. Neil Gaiman is my hero, selling the network on the premise that they could have his great stories if only they were willing to gleefully integrate peen on every episode. Or so I’m told. There’s a lot on my ‘to watch’ list that I haven’t got around to yet. I will tell you, of course, that mlm is out there, Evak were voted out against Supercorp in the quarter finals) but on a big show like Supernatural that risk is exceptional. That’s why when we talk about Destiel ‘going canon’, we make the shockingly ambitious request of them HOLDING HANDS, or mutually saying ‘I love you’, and sometimes feel like expecting anything more, like a kiss, or god forbid a sex scene, is too much to ask. Why? When lesbians and bisexual women are presented on TV, kisses and sex scenes are a matter of course. In Alex’ coming out, in Thirteen’s coming out in House, Angela’s coming out in Bones - huge ensemble shows where main characters, all women, have come out and kissed (and returned to male partners in the case of the later two). (I should point out I am talking about genre “mainstream” shows in general, not for example Queer as Folk, where the primary aim is to explore sexuality, not fight dragons or solve crimes)
Now in addition to this problem, an issue that I’ve seen for years is that from inside the fandom world we are made to feel as though we are somehow obscene or inferior for shipping mlm ships, a projection that comes from the way mainstream folks will react to you if they happen to discover you drawing dudes together. Sometimes we hide our online selves from the real world out of shame that has only built over the years, where it’s considered that supporting mlm ships instead of wlw ships makes you fetishistic, or objectifying of gay men. I’ve seen it in fanfiction spaces and in rp spaces on dw and lj that shipping wlw has been raised to a point of being considered ‘more pure’. If you ‘claim’, they say, to be a queer woman, you should wholly be supporting wlw ships. When I started hearing this dialogue I was THIRTEEN. This was before Willow/Tara. There were just less wlw ships on tv, and there were less female characters whose autonomy didn’t depend on men, or portray them as being fragile, the weakness of their gender or whatever. There were standout female characters in my youth, absolutely, but they were all independent (mostly) straight women: Kathyrn Janeway, Sam Carter, Clarice Starling, Dana Scully. They kicked out against the system, the world they lived in, intelligent and defiant ladies I still idolize. Nowadays, though those wlw ships are available, and populated by so many beautiful, powerful, progressive female characters - and yes miraculously even strong female characters who still embrace their own womanhood. In contrast  mlm ships are not keeping up because, in some way, I think that the ‘impurity’ of shipping mlm has stuck. I struggle to think of even straight non toxic male role models, nevermind male role models who are in engaging, romantic relationships with the same sex. This stagnation of masculinity (apart from the rise of the geek hero which often, as in the case of TBBT, doesn’t break away from inbuilt misogyny) troubles me immensely. (I’m not saying all male characters are awful, incidentally, but it’s not a positive message to outright expose the flaws of toxic masculinity without offering understanding, lessons, and growth. But that’s another essay.)
Trust me, I’m not saying everyone feels that TV is being stacked against mlm, but as a bisexual I really feel fractured by the whole thing. I feel like I’m supposed to loathe myself for shipping mlm, particularly when that mlm ship is ‘two white guys’. The fact that I as a woman enjoy male and female bodies is irrelevant, because one desire is pure, and one desire is fetishism. There is no balance. I’m allowed to be titilated by members of my own gender kissing each other and only that and heterosexuality. As a bisexual who is currently leaning toward wlw myself (sexuality existing on a sliding scale imo), it is the power imbalance in heterosexual couples which puts me off. It’s painfully true to life. I have a particular loathing for Booth and Brennan from Bones, for example, where his toxic masculinity is unilaterally forgiven because it’s true love, while Bones, once independent and stubborn herself, is increasingly nudged further out of character in order to forgive him his trespasses. But when I ship mlm, or write fanfic of my favorite couples, any power I give them is not based on their gender. The same I imagine is true of wlw. (An unfortunate consequence of this is people project it onto real life, where power inequality and abuse can exist regardless of make believe ‘purity’, and consequently people end up believing that something is wrong with them rather than their relationship, similar issues as people face when they imagine marriage is the goal, and everything else is happily ever after, because Disney told them so. In which case I advise you to rewatch Mary Poppins.)
During voting, I was reticent to address why voting for Destiel over the other ships was important to me. It was personal. (Of course anyone could have sent me an ask if they were curious). But why I was voting didn’t matter. It was enough that I was voting for the couple I love, whose relationship my blog is devoted to, and whose love story I hope is resolved. But there is more to it than that. What’s important, I guess, is how I feel about Dean. My reading of him is of a bisexual, still in the closet - perhaps even to himself - in his thirties. He made it out of high school, but that’s it, because he dropped out of higher education for family commitments. He likes rock music and classic cars. He loves pie, and dumb medical TV dramas, and cowboy hats, and riding rodeo bulls and chatting to strangers. He struggles with voicing his true self with people who know him, and might judge him in a way he will never come back from. Dean is basically me. I am all those things. And in this case, he’s in love with a genderfluid (has been both male and female) guardian angel whose love for Dean explicitly and singularly, has been described as a profound bond, and the greatest love story ever told. Castiel’s love for Dean, his willingness to do anything for him, is all I think any of us want from a romantic partner. And yes, we all find different things in our ships, and presumably other people connect with Destiel for reasons that aren’t the same as my own, but that’s okay. My reasons are my reasons.
And yet I am still thrown into that emotional disconnect: that because this couple is an mlm couple I’m wrong to ship it, that I would be better putting my energy into watching shows I don’t necessarily enjoy as much so I can find my representation in more respectable (or potentially less queerbaity) fandoms. That Supernatural isn’t good enough because I’ve been repeatedly told by people inside and outside the fandom that it isn’t good enough. I’ve got to tell you I agree that it struggles with being progressive. While season 3 of Grey’s Anatomy was showing the struggles of a pre-op mtf woman and her wife in an ep that made me actually cry for the dysphoria represented, on the other channel SPN had just got done killing a token ‘woman with an off screen girlfriend’ character. By season 11, we’ve had two gay male couples, both holding hands and leaning into each other to express their relationship. SPN is slow. Nobody in the world would deny that.
But to be quite honest, also, finding representation doesn’t have to mean ‘a ship’, it can just be a well written bisexual woman with a badge, and you aren’t restrained to just one rep either! In fact, the more the better. I find myself particularly starved for that rep, especially since - having been fetishized for my bisexuality irl before - I see painful reflections of that on television. That’s obviously going to be related to bad writing and TV’s particular way of objectifying women in general, too, but when a woman (say Angela Montenegro from Bones) has a two episodes storyline where she makes out with another insanely attractive actress, the music rising, lit with soft shades, the camera focused in on their mouth--before the plot is forgotten entirely, it is incredibly difficult not to see that as objectification and not bisexual solidarity. I want more mlm on TV because I want more bisexuals of both genders on TV, and because of the harmful insinuation in mainstream thought that a guy who comes out as bi late has somehow been lying to himself and was gay all along, while women who are bi are just exploring their sexuality and somehow more up for it. Those views need to be constantly, constantly challenged, because, honestly, people believe them. (Probably not me or you, but it’s out there).
(As an aside: mainstream is also harsh toward female writers who write mlm stories. There have understandably, as a result, been female writers who chose male pseudonyms to pen their gay romance novels. I first experienced this to a lesser extent back in Gundam Wing fandom, because if you were a ‘male’ author it legitimized you and people would read your stories in preference to those penned by girls. Back then it was a numbers game. The prejudice does remain. Audiences are sometimes outright cold to female authors who pen mlm stories! You need only look at the conversation about boycotting Love, Simon because it was written by a straight woman to appreciate just how deeply we’ve built this disconnect, as though to write something the author must always write from personal experience. If that’s the case, I feel terrible for Thomas Harris and Jeff Lindsay, and JK Rowling (who speaks about choosing her moniker because it was genderless) must certainly have had an exciting childhood, what with all the magic and dragons.
As a result I think we (or at least I) have internalized some harmful things about who has the right to interpret themselves in stories told about men, or male protagonists. And in lashing back at girls who for years have been doing just that, considering it to be lesser if I find a role model in Dean instead of Angela, we have harmed the integrity of mlm fans themselves, who increasingly struggle under a burden of self imposed guilt. It is reflecting back poorly on mlm performances, even as wlw stories flourish. In this raising the pedestal of wlw purity, the ‘ethical’ alternative, we dismiss what people can learn about themselves from male role models too, something that we instead encourage if it’s a teenage boy finding a role model in Elsa. My closeted bi self loving Dean Winchester harms nobody, but I am still made to feel lesser for doing so, even if sometimes that feeling is ridiculously self imposed. Hell, maybe I’m alone in this feeling and the rest of this is bullshit, but that’s why I said ‘I vs we’ was definitely a part of this commentary.
In any case, this is what I think this means to the Zimbio vote: As wlw rep has been increasing, mlm has been facing a disappointing deficit. Those once big fandom movers ‘Superwholock’, the Hannigrams, the Sterek shippers--have fractured and splintered off. Destiel has come in waves but it’s still somehow here, without its original opponents from back in the day. It’s here, even with setbacks after season 8 and 10 that had fans breaking away from Supernatural entirely. Optimism now reflects optimism felt before, but let’s face it Castiel was killed permanently at one point, and Bob Singer said outright, even just a few years ago, that Destiel and social media stuff just didn’t come up in the writing room (pr is not showrunning, etc). People are hugely entitled to struggle with optimism for non canon mlm ships because history repeats itself. Add into that feelings like I described above, and the struggle is real. It can sometimes feel like you’re fandom’s three legged, one eyed donkey.
Add to that how old Destiel is. Every fandom coming into existence now, every ship built around, comes into contact with Destiel at some point. If you type ‘queerbaiting’ into Wikipedia, our ship is cited. In Google, we come up first. Thanks to antis (and some genuinely bad behavior from bad apple shippers over the years) we’ve earned a reputation, and it moves before us into every ship interaction we have. Because of that, we can appear both intimidating and as something to be avoided, because ‘what if you meet a crazy one’? You’d think seniority would be a good thing, but few people see us as a ship that’s been there and done that, as they do Swanqueen. We aren’t the ship that can perhaps offer advice on things going on in whippersnapper fandoms based on our experiences, as it would be in an ideal world. We’re not a ship to be aligned with, and because of this odd perception of wlw vs. mlm, there was simply never any potential that support for Supercorp wasn’t going to skyrocket. It was a fight against ‘That monolithic mlm ship that just won’t stop’, as it were, because here we still are hanging onto threads hoping our ship will go canon, and based on past evidence, the fall of other mlm ships, and only looking in from the outside, that seems like wishful thinking.
So we were unlikely to gain allies from heartbroken mlm fandoms. We were unlikely to find allies in wlw fandoms. It’s sad, of course, because for all the talk of representation in media, the desire to express a balance and cheerlead for mlm, imo an obvious representation underdog, simply doesn’t ever come up. Our friends and relatives roll our eyes at us if we talk about Destiel because we get that ridiculous light in our eyes when we do. Ultimately, that meant that Destiel was on its own. It had to unify. It had to pour its passion into voting and be a family again. It’s been knocked out in previous years - honestly based on what I’ve heard it’s been a disaster - but THIS YEAR we pulled out all the stops. That was all us. Despite antivoting, Destiel shippers - and only Destiel shippers - fought and fought - thousands of votes after thousands of votes, as we made small leads only to slip three times further. We didn’t stop. We were there and fighting right up until the end. And it may just have been a silly online poll, but I think it really goes to show what we can do when we put our hearts into it. We more than doubled the amount of votes cast in the previous round, over the exact same time scale, even though Supercorp fought back with everything they had, all the vibrancy of being a fresh, shunned ship determined to prove themselves, using social media strategy and unity to bring in votes from wherever they could get them. They fought well. They were wiley and smart, and so passionate; passionate like I thought I’d forgotten how to be.
And we kept fighting. We were in the semis, with twice as many votes more than Swanqueen, and we fought tooth and nail and almost got there, slipping just in the last half hour.
I have to believe that that’s because some people in the Destiel family have hope. I know we’ve drawn in a lot of new and returning shippers recently, I’ve seen you following me and starting out in meta writing yourselves, joining Destiel exchanges for the first time, sharing your first codas. The DCBB and Pinefest have had ENORMOUS turnouts. We are, despite all odds, growing as a ship again.
I really hope that we can overcome the shame that has somehow been drummed into us for shipping mlm. I hope that we can all, whether we ship wlw, mlm, het or poly or whatever peeps are doing these days, make sure not to raise one as an ideal over the others, because it’s not in the spirit of family, of fandom. It is never ‘us against them’, it’s never a case of moral or ethical superiority, definitely not even in everyday parlance and least of all in a shipping popularity contest.
And maybe despite the risk, we’ll get an ‘I love you’, some hand holding. Hell, maybe even a kiss (Supernatural never even gave us a kiss between Jesse and Cesar, though, so I have my doubts.) But God if that wouldn’t pave the way for better deconstruction of toxic masculinity on genre TV, more presence of bisexual men and gay men on genre TV, and more men kissing and open expression of sexuality on genre TV.
So here’s my final word. Maybe the bunnies will kiss. Maybe they’ll even do what bunnies do, who knows? And maybe next year we’ll win it.
I hope I didn’t step on any toes with this post. I felt like these words needed to come out of me, though, so here they are. Thank God there’s no more Zimbio until next year, right? Please refer back to my first paragraph for disclaimers. Thanks, though, if you read this far.

Why Tony Tony Chopper is my Least Favorite Straw Hat
I feel conflicted when I see people list characters from greatest to least favorite. Cut and dry lists in general - whether featuring power levels, most attractive, saddest backstory, etc - tend to elicit this reaction, because they’re so subjective and I think if an author has done a good job then the audience shouldn’t be able to make the list at all.
Which wouldn’t stop people from trying, but still.
Using One Piece as an example, there are certain characters that resonate with me personally, the chief of whom is Nico Robin. I’m a total sucker for the misunderstood badass bookworm - Raven from the original Teen Titans cartoon, Tris Chandler from Tamora Pierce’s works, Roald Dahl’s Matilda, and Thistle from Daughter of the Lilies are just a few examples of this in other media.
But apart from Best Girl Robin, my feelings about the cast of One Piece tends to vary depending on how you define “favorite”. I love Luffy as a main character, but would hate to meet him in real life. I appreciate Zoro’s place in the crew, but find him boring and long wistfully for the days when he was allowed to be a goofball. Nami, Usopp, and Vivi grew on me over time, and if I could graph my feelings on Sanji over the course of the series it would look like I have ventricular tachycardia
Tumblr media
And then there’s Chopper.
Just as I’ve liked Robin since her first appearance, I have never liked Chopper. I know typing it is akin to blasphemy amongst the One Piece fandom, but I was left unmoved by his backstory, and he’s never grown on me in the hundreds of chapters since then. The first thing I thought when I first saw his unused concept art was “what a wasted opportunity”.
Tumblr media
A lot of this is subjective. I work in health care, so the quack doctor Hiliruk rubs me the wrong way on a purely professional level, which in turn makes it really hard for me to care when he dies. I dislike Chopper’s “mascot” status and how it’s affected his character design. I wish he would do more onscreen doctoring. I find his naivete annoying. I think his post-timeskip transformations look dumb. And so on and so forth, ad nauseum.
At the same time, Nami is never shown drawing maps and I regularly have her in my top 3-4 Straw Hats. Usopp and Luffy are just as stupid, but their antics don’t bother me half as much as Chopper’s do. When I decided to sit down and write about Chopper, I had to figure out what made me less tolerant about him specifically when there are plenty of others who share his same flaws. This is what I came up with.
Want vs Need and Forgotten Development
In his book The Anatomy of Story, John Truby describes the difference between a character’s want versus their need. While written with writing screenplays in mind, many of Truby’s techniques can be used regardless of medium. It’s an excellent tool for would-be writers, and I highly recommend it.
When looking at Chopper through the lens of want and need, it’s pretty easy to see what Oda had in mind.
Tumblr media
Chopper wants to become a doctor who can heal any illness, but he needs to reconcile his human and reindeer natures and see himself as a complete person. Ironically, in doing so he willingly becomes the “monster” he was so afraid of.
Since this transformation is for the sake of and with the support of his friends, it’s coded as positive when before it was negative. Chopper is no longer isolated and lonely, but an accepted and important member of an infamous pirate crew. Compare the above to his fight on Fishman Island
Tumblr media
So Chopper does have a complete character arc through the first half of the series, and it’s a good one - simultaneously unique to him while bolstering the themes of One Pieces as a whole. Good job, Oda.
At the same time, I think there’s a secondary need that’s overlooked by the narrative, and by this point I doubt will be relevant to the story, and that’s the fact that Chopper needs to grow the fuck up.
To be fair, Chopper is only 15 at the start of the series, had spent the first years of his life as a reindeer and the rest isolated from the world for his own safety. It is understandable that he’d be naive. Dr. Kureha points this out for herself when he first joins the Straw Hat Pirates
Tumblr media
What sets Chopper’s immaturity apart from, say, Luffy’s is that it is presented as something that he needs to overcome. This is especially true during the Skyepiea arc.
Remember that early on in the arc Chopper is left alone to guard the Going Merry. Chopper fails, losing quite badly to the Priest with all the strings whose name I can’t remember. Even with Gan Fall’s intervention it was plot armor sheer luck that kept the both of them from being killed.
This loss nicely sets up Chopper’s battle with Gedatsu, which ended with Chopper’s first solo victory of the series.
Tumblr media
Chopper screams to the heavens that he’s a “real” pirate, which in context refers to reliable, brave, and strong. Note that this ties into his main need of self-actualization as the chapter before Chopper calls himself a monster just before hitting Gedatsu with his finisher.
In doing so, Oda is effectively saying that Chopper needs to mature before he can become a complete character. In this way Chopper is like Usopp, whose desire to become a brave warrior the sea necessitates that he face his problems head on instead of run from them.
Later during the Davy Fight Back, Chopper is temporarily lost to the Foxy Pirates. He is understandably upset, but he goes overboard with his hysterics, causing Zoro to call him out.
Tumblr media
Zoro in essence tells Chopper to man up. Now, masculinity as defined by One Piece is a pretty broad topic, and this isn’t the only time Chopper is told how to act “manly” by other members of the Straw Hat crew, one of the best examples I can think of being Sanji telling Chopper that “a man doesn’t believe a woman’s lies” when Robin tries to leave the crew. In this instance, however, I think “being a man” is interchangeable with “acting like an adult”, specifically in the area of taking responsibility for one’s actions.
So we have the problem of Chopper’s naivete brought up by Kureha, the first steps of maturity seen during Skypiea, and the exposure that Chopper still has a long way to go during the Davy Fight Back. There’s even a moment during Thriller Bark when he has to deal with the realization that one of his idols is an evil dirtbag of Spandam-like proportion - a loss of idealism that most go through as a normal part of growing up.
The development isn’t fast nor especially profound. It’s never the main focus of Chopper’s arc because it’s not his primary need, and in a gag-happy series like One Piece I think Chopper’s childishness would always be the brunt of some sort of joke. But there is a sense of steadily marching forward toward a goal, and if things had kept trending in that direction I think it would have been enough to elevate Chopper from his dubious position as my least favorite Straw Hat.
But immediately after the timeskip we have this abomination of a scene
Tumblr media
Words cannot express how much I hate this scene. Every other Straw Hat gets an awesome reintroduction. Nami and Usopp, who along with Chopper make up the so-called “weak trio”, even get to beat the crap out of some of the Fake Hat Pirates.
Chopper mistakes creepy cucumber lady for Robin and runs away crying, undoing hundreds of chapters of development in one fell swoop. It’s stupid on so many levels I can’t even articulate enough to type them all out. The gag falls flat and makes it impossible for me to take him seriously going forward. I will admit that I’ve not done a lot of rereading of recent chapters to double check, but where Usopp and Luffy get plenty of moments post-timeskip to display a new-found maturity while maintaining their fun-loving nature, Chopper does not. He’s the same old Chopper.
I don’t have any way to confirm this, but I think part of this stagnation of character is due to Chopper’s status of cute mascot. To disrupt this status quo is to lessen his marketability. There is a reason why Chopper’s so damn cute when Oda originally wanted him to be kind of ugly. I mean, say what you want about Oda’s use of realistic body proportions, but there was a time when Chopper’s head wasn’t bigger than his torso.
Whether I’m right or not, I don’t think that it can be disputed that Chopper has gone through what I call “forgotten character development”. He’s just as immature (and in some places more so) as he was early in the series, and personally I can’t stand that kind of character.
And again this is a highly subjective thing, but I don’t even think he’s that cute anymore. It’s a serious problem when your mascot ceases to be adorable and has no development to fall back on.
In the larger picture of One Piece, the loss of Chopper’s secondary development is a small thing, but it’s enough for me to not care about him at all. Sanji, for all his polarizing actions, at least makes me feel something. These days Chopper is just...there.
I will admit that I might have let my initial distaste cloud my objectivity, so let me know what you think about Chopper’s development, or if there’s any other character that everyone else seems to like but you can’t stand. I’ll commiserate with the burden of having an unpopular opinion.

So welcome back to another QUESTIONS WITH RIOT!
So here is a nice big post for you to read, see it on my tumblr page and the facebook group and maybe in a new book someday.
I will be reaching out to B movie directors and actors in the next week or so with a handful of (often similar questions) .
They are not real time interveiws , I just sent them the questions and they msgd me back. Because they are awesome people.
Todays guest that I suckered in to using their precious time to answer my questions for b movie film makers is Richard Mogg a fim maker from Vancouver. Richard chilled us with the Massage Parlour of Death! As well as hit us right in the Easter time nightmare of EASTER BUNNY BLOODBATH which just recently released a sequel. Riot at the Movies folks will remember BIGFOOT ATE MY BOYFRIEND that played on the first ever Terrible Two Day best a few years ago. On top of all that he is a writer of a few of the most detailed go to books on the genre of shot on video and low budget underground film makers.
Lets get to the questions
ADAM RIOT : SO RICHARD, IF YOU WERE GIVEN A MULTIMILLION DOLLAR BUDGET WHAT WOULD YOU DO?  GO CRAZY?
Mogg: To be honest, I'd split it - but only half of what you're thinking.  I'd take half and make THE ULTIMATE sci-fi Extravaganza!  Then I'd make a whole bunch of small independent features.  So yes, I'd make my GALAXINA but with a bunch of cheese to go with it.
Adam Riot: HOW OFTEN HAVE YOU WRITTEN SOMETHING AND SAID "OH THAT'S SO BAD, BUT I'M KEEPING IT IN"?
Mogg:  Actually never... unless it overwhelmingly sucks.  I've been writing scripts long enough to know you can write unlimited, but it's smarter to write what you can actually do.  So write ambitiously but never against your vision.  One time I thought to not include something, but after we shot the film, I was able to edit back in my original idea... so first impulses are usually the right impulses.
Adam Riot: WE DO TEND TO DOUBT OUTSELVES TOO MUCH. OF ALL THE MOVIES YOU HAVE MADE WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE?  FROM EXPERIENCE OR FINISHED PROJECT, WHAT MADE IT YOUR FAVORITE?
Mogg: My favorite film that I've done is BIGFOOT ATE MY BOYFRIEND, which isn't gory at all but heavy in the awkward comedy I enjoy.  But the real reason it's my favorite is that everything seemed to come together.  It was the first time my vision matched execution, and the final product was as good/better than I had hoped.  BIGFOOT was my 5th feature film, so it took that many tries to get things right - plus I had my all-star cast.
Adam Riot: WE ALL LOVED IT HERE.
HAVE YOU MADE FILMS THAT YOU HAVE NOT SHOWN TO THE WORLD THAT YOU JUST DIDN'T LIKE SO YOU HID IT AWAY?
Mogg:  There are films I've done that haven't been released yet, but that doesn't have anything to do with hiding them.  Sometimes it seems that opportunities come up and you have to be ready to jump in... my 3rd feature film was shot just as 2013 rang in, but that was the year I found out we were having our first baby.  So after quickly moving and getting our lives set straight, I had an empty bedroom while we anticipated the baby's arrival.  But did I waste the opportunity of an empty bedroom?  Heck no, so I quickly shot MASSAGE PARLOR OF DEATH using the bedroom as a massage parlor.  So MASSAGE took the place of that 3rd film I shot (which hasn't been released), but that's the way life happens sometimes.  One day I'll release everything but timing and momentum occasionally get in the way.  I still have 3 films in the can yet to be released: HOT CHICKS BLAST URANUS, DEATH RIDES OF DEATH (formerly ROLLERCOASTER KICKBACK) and my "exotic" picture JOHNNY GLOBBER.
Adam Riot: I AM ALMOST SCARED BY THOSE TITLES BUT CURIOUS AS WELL. AND LAUGHING THE MASSAGE PARLOR BECAME A BABY ROOM.
WHAT MOVIES IN A MICRO BUDGET GENRE HAVE IMPRESSED YOU RECENTLY?
Mogg: You know, I'm so obsessed with watching older films to see their overall genre evolutions that I don't get to see many "newer" films.  Drew Marvick's POOL PARTY MASSACRE was a favorite, as was 2019's MORBID STORIES.  I recently caught Dave Castiglione's rerelease of DEEP UNDEAD and it's a knockout with some amazing underwater photography - stuff you just don't see in a lot of micro budget flicks.  And that's the great thing about lower budgeted stuff... it's made from the heart using igneous techniques rather than boatloads of money.
Adam Riot: WHAT MAKES YOU LOSE YOUR LOVE FOR INDEPENDENT FILMS, THE PEOPLE?  THE MONEY?  THE RESPONSE FROM FRIENDS OR BUYERS?  HOW DO YOU OVERCOME IT?
Mogg: Wow, LOSE my love?  That's a tricky question.  I think there are personal turn-offs that might not let me get into a film, but the filmmaking spirit never leaves.  Yeah sometimes the people involved are only out to "get rich quick" can be trying, or rip off artists who turn out flicks every week with no investment in their content... that's a turn off.  I don't personally enjoy mean-spiritedness in movies, which is why all RickMoe titles are lighthearted and silly.  But as a pure business, I think basic indifference and self-righteousness in people infront and behind the camera can really effect the product.  But that's true of any business really...
Adam Riot: WE ALL KNOW THERE NEEDS TO BE SOMETHING MORE THAN MONEY. YOU HAVE BEEN MAKING WITH A LOT OF DIFFERENT PEOPLE, HOW DO YOU FEEL FRIENDSHIP IN THE INDEPENDENT FILM WORLD IS IMPORTANT AND HOW HARD WOULD IT BE WITHOUT CLOSE FRIENDS?
Mogg: Great question.  Close relationships and treating people with respect is everything.  Acknowledging that everyone counts and their efforts are never taken for granted is key to longevity and happiness in this business.  It's true, in independent filmmaking many (perhaps all!) people involved in making films don't get paid financially... maybe they do it for a credit or recognition or even just to have fun, and we as the audience need to know that people really do put their blood, sweat and tears into these movies.  Sure there are straight up jerks running around with a camera, but when you start seeing the same people out there having fun and KEEP TRYING, you really get to feel that they're being honest with the audience.  Making movies IS fun - even when you're against problems - but a positive, uplifting leader can make the world of difference.  And I think that positivity can draw others together.  So making close friendships is really the sign that you're doing things right.
Adam Riot: WHAT'S YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE STREAMING SERVICES, DIRECT DOWNLOAD, TUBITV THAT KIND OF THING?
Mogg: ANY OPINION? Well I'm trying it now for the first time with EASTER BUNNY BLOODBATH 2: NO MORE TEARS.  I went thing route (direct streaming through Vimeo) because I needed to have quick access for viewers before Easter.  But also because of this damn coronavirus pandemic.  So being able to have audiences access something instantly without waiting for physical mail was very important.  But in general, I'm a physical media type of person.  I WANT a VHS/DVD/BLU copy on the shelf to look at, admire, hold.  I don't think I'll ever get away from that need to hold a film... because when everything is digital, it almost feels like it doesn't exist.  Delete and it's gone forever!
Adam Riot: FOR THOSE READING RICHARD MOGGS EARLY WORK IS ON SRS IS AVAILABLE ON TUBITV NOW.
IS THERE A CHARACTER YOU SHOWED THE WORLD THAT IS ON THE TOP OF YOUR WANT LIST TO BRING BACK?
Mogg: 100% our Federal Bigfoot Investigator John Saurius (played by the incredible Kirk Munaweera) is a character I'd bring back for EVERY film.  He's so applicable to any story, and he carries a comical vengeance (his dick was torn off by Bigfoot).  But I'd like to see him lead a film completely too... he sorta does with EASTER BUNNY BLOODBATH 2: NO MORE TEARS, but I'd like to bring him in in a bigger way for our upcoming Noir picture.
Adam Riot :I do hope to see the son of the kung fu kid or something (smirk)
YOU HAVE WRITTEN SEVERAL BOOKS ON THE SHOT ON VIDEO GENRE, ONE THAT'S NOW BASICALLY THE GO TO ENCYCLOPEDIA FOR THE GENRE AND ON THE TWISTED HORROR LOVE FOR CHRISTMAS.  IS THERE SOMETHING ELSE ON THE DRAWING BOARD/TYPING BOARD?
Mogg: YES!  And thank you for asking!  I learned a lot writing "ANALOG NIGHTMARES" and even more with "GIFTWRAPPED & GUTTED" and the door is always open for another... maybe even a revisit.  But the next writing project excitedly being discussed is turning some of my own films into novels.  And not just the movies written as stories... but actual novels based on the ORIGINAL SCRIPTS of the films we've made, including much more graphic ideas.  For example, sex scenes were originally written in our early films that (of course) our actors weren't too interested in performing for no money... but NOW!  Now we can really write in detail the spicy hot sex always intended!  And same goes for the gore!
Tumblr media
Adam Riot: EASTER BUNNY BLOODBATH 2: NO MORE TEARS IS ONLINE NOW AND ITS A VERSUS TITLE.  TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT THE MOVIE AND TELL ME WHAT VERSUS TYPE MOVIES IMPRESSED YOU IN THE PAST.
Mogg: YES!  EBB2 is a "BIGFOOT VS BUNNY" sequel!  So there's an amazing climax where the two beasts meet for a showdown to the death!  After shooting BIGFOOT ATE MY BOYFRIEND, I knew that the only way to bring Bigfoot back would be to pair him against and equal of physical strength... and the Bunny hit me like a ton of bricks.  Plus it was great fun revisiting 2010's EASTER BUNNY BLOODBATH which isn't the best film around but was my first feature length film (which I lovingly say "taught me all the mistakes I wanted to teach myself").  So in making this sequel (after making tons of other films), I was able to re-examine my early approaches and redo things from a new standpoint.  It was also fun to reuse some of the old musical cues and try to match the style of the first film.  But I think the biggest difference was in the editing, because I have become a much more experienced video editor since then... learning how to better time things for a greater payoff.  But as a versus film, I felt it was important to focus clearly on the Bunny storyline first, then bring in Bigfoot almost unexpectedly at the end - surprising the audience.  And that's sort of the way I cut films, leaving the end to play out in a zany over the top fashion (anyone who made it through TEENAGE SLUMBER PARTY NIGHTMARE can see this).  But I do love THE TOXIC AVENGER III's pair off with TOXIE and the DEVIL...
Adam Riot: Thanks so much Richard, now every get his books and get your Easter and rent or buy Easter Bunny Bloodbath 2. Stay Safe and Stay Awesome

The new reality or fiction: Contemporary photography

Alterations are not allowed in press photography, but they are one of the tools used in contemporary art photography? Why?
According to the guidelines of ethics of photojournalism, editing pictures of any kind is not advised for journalistic purposes. ‘Accuracy is the moral imperative of journalists and news organizations, and should not be compromised, even by pressing deadlines of the 24-hour news cycle’ (Ethics Guidelines). For example, staging, re-enacting, or manipulating events, adding or removing content during photocapture or post-production would change the perception of events, thus influencing the intended audience one way or another. Keeping photographs' original form and state is an ethical responsibility for photojournalists to maintain their neutral position of truth and avoid manipulating the exact message that is shown in reliable news channels such as newspapers, television and serious social media platforms. However, in contemporary art photography, neither a photographer’s message nor the process has to follow the ethical guidelines that photojournalists have to adhere to. Because the purpose of photography in an artistic context, is to convey the vision of the artist. The message is open to interpretation and the audience is encouraged to develop various perceptions of it’s meaning, whether it is hidden or obvious. This artistic process of photographic artworks allows the photographer to have freedom in both the image capture and the post-production processes. This is encouraged and expected of the photographic artworks, as simple documentation of reality is deemed not sufficient enough any longer to give a photograph an artistic merit.
What happened to the photography? Is this its future? By Cruz
When we compare the photos taken from Adams, Sommer, and Klett and Parke to Harrison, Muniz and Crewdson’s work they all have very different photographic styles. They have different preferences of how they like to take pictures for example. When you look at Adams, Sommer, and Klett’s photos, they portray realistic images by using the elements around them such as nature, landscape and the people in the image. Their photos have been barely touched up by any editing software or by altering it in the darkroom. This gives us the raw and realistic emotions when we see their images. When we look at these images through the lens of NPPA ethics they would pass as press photos due to the minimal use of either digital software or altering of the image in the dark room.
On the other hand, Muniz, ParkeHarrison, and Crewdson all have a different approach when it comes to getting their audience’s attention. When they take photos of others they use properly placed objects or people, colour and lighting to turn their imaginations into reality. Looking at the images for the first time, we saw a different kind of creativity in the photos, compared to Sommer, Adams, Klett’s realistic photos. Muniz, ParkeHarrison, and Crewdson were more art photographers rather than press photographers due to the creative process that they follow as well as the alterations made in the photos. In our opinion, these future photographers want to be more creative and have more freedom when it comes to representation of their artistic vision. Art is all about expressing a vision and/or feeling whether it's utopic or real. The process or the medium of photography is altered to serve this vision and this appears to be the future.
Compare photographers of Sommer, Adams and Klett versus Parkeharrison, Muniz and Crewdson.
Mark Klett VS Shana & Robert Parkeharrison by Pilar
Mark Klett
Mark Klett is a famous American photographer. Through Klett’s photography, his form of style is linking cultures, landscapes and time. Some of his famous works are from the Grand Canyon where he and his former student Wolfe were able to recognize the accurate locations portrayed in Klett's geographic points from his original overview. His versions of the historic views are being inserted within the modern photographs that are built in a panorama. The reason behind this style or rather this creative idea of Klett is to highlight possible or multiple interpretations of a single scenery or rather the landscape. Most of his works are a mashup of different photographs inserted to an old picture that was taken years ago and new pictures that he took are being attached at the same place. “So much of what we know, and what we think we know, about the land has first passed through someone’s lens. The interesting thing is to make use of this history, not merely to be absorbed into it. For me, landscape photographs begin as the artifacts of personal moments. They get interesting when they become cultural commentary.” - Mark Klett “I am not much interested in discovering new territories to photographs. Instead, what I wish my pictures could do is lessen the distance one often feels when looking at landscape photographs… The longer I work, the more important it is to me to make photographs that tell my story as a participant, and not just an observer of the land.” - Mark Klett

Shana and Robert Parkeharrison
Shana and Robert Parkeharrison are a husband and wife team who have been taking photographs together for almost 20 years. Their style in photography focuses more on the relationship between humans, nature/environment and technology. In their photographs, they include a touch of painting techniques, for example, using a collage technique creates a cinematic story of the environment. Their creativity in their works is very unique due to the way they interpret and figure out how an audience would communicate with the image being shown. Moreover, they utilize multiple styles as some of their works have an effect of being very dramatic with dreamy qualities by the use of photogravures.

Fredrick Sommer VS Vik Muniz by Canazares
Fredrick Sommer
Fredrick Sommer Adam was born in Angri, Italy but he was raised in Brazil. At first, he studied and focused more on landscape architecture. He was then introduced to using watercolours and that involves pen and ink where eventually led him to have his first exhibition of watercolours. His creativity then evolved where he experimented with photos using double exposure. His photographs are aesthetically pleasing landscapes that range from disorienting with macabre aspects of the natural world to surreal arrangements of found objects and pure abstractions.

Vik Muniz
Vik Muniz is born in Sau Paulo Brazil. He was born and diagnosed with Dyslexia. Through his form of style in art photography, his creativity is very distinctive. Through his art he was able to recreate iconic, historical artworks from found materials like trash; a form of layered appropriation. Through all his works, Muniz’s art makes us question through illusion and perception. Muniz has said that he does not believe in originals, but rather believes in individuality. Indeed, in his photo manipulation and methodology, he truly creates signature works that repurpose and showcase themes in different lights for his viewers. He sees photography as having "freed painting from its responsibility to depict the world as fact." (Ollman, 2020).
“Things look like things, they are embedded in the transience of each other’s meaning; a thing looks like a thing, which looks like another thing, or another. This eternal ricocheting of meaning throughout the elemental proves representation to be natural and nature to be representational.”
- Vik Muniz
“Creation is something that represents a graspable portion of what we can observe but cannot understand. Creativity is how we cope with creation; it’s how we invent languages, motifs, and patterns to actually help us navigate in an otherwise really complex structure of events and situations. All we do is try to cope, ultimately. Creating opened ended structures, and ways in which you can approach or think about reality is the ultimate role of the artist. You have to be very dedicated to the concept of Realism.”

Gregory Crewdson VS Robert Adams by Klassen

Mobile Homes, Jefferson County, Colorado by Robert Adams
Tumblr media
Production still (Clover Street  #2), 2005 by Gregory Crewdson Robert Adams
Robert Adams (1937) got into photography in his mid-twenties, primarily focusing on the changing architecture and landscape of the American West in the early 60s. This quote summarizes his observations of human altered landscapes and desire to photograph the rapidly changing architectural suburbs. Photography allowed him to engage in his love of outdoors while providing him a vehicle to contribute to society.
‘I came back to Colorado to discover that it had become like California. . .. The places where I had worked, hunted, climbed, and run rivers were all being destroyed, and for me the desperate question was, how do I survive this? Edward Hopper’s paintings had already given me a clue, though I didn’t fully understand it.’ (Yale University Art Gallery)
His work was informed by photographers like Lewis Hine, Edward Weston, Dorothea Lange, and Ansel Adams who merged their social concerns with their artistic vision in landscape photography.  As we can see in his pictures entitled Mobile Homes or Summer Nights Walking, he was interested in capturing the banal and the mundane in this new altered landscape without photographic alterations. This is also clear in his quote stating that ‘[w]hatever power there is in the urban pictures is bound to the closeness with which they skirt banality. For a shot to be good—suggestive of more than just what it is—it has to come perilously near being bad, just a view of stuff.’ (Yale University Art Gallery)

Twilight (Beer Dream)  (1998) by Gregory Crewdson
Photo: courtesy Photology Gregory Crewdson
Gregory Crewdson (1962), much like Adams, is also interested in man-made or the natural American landscapes, although for a couple of decades after Adams in time period. However, unlike Adams, Crewdson is well known for staging elaborate and eerie shots of suburban people and homes just like in a movie scene. He was influenced by film makers such as Steven Spielberg, Diane Arbus, and Edward Hopper. He uses a crew just like in movie sets and works with a director of photography. He uses various stage lighting sources and strobes. Therefore, his photography looks more staged and makes people wonder whether they are looking at a photograph or a disturbing crime scene or a surreal image from a movie! He has an elaborate post production process to achieve these sensations in a viewer.
‘It begins with him looking through contact sheets alongside a retoucher. Often his images are pieced together from multiple exposures. Even the retoucher remarks that it’s rare that he chooses the final image from one single exposure, it’s often more composites of multiple photographs all with unique elements that capture what he’s looking for’. (Wilson, J)
If we examine Adams’ Summer Night Walking, one can imagine him setting up his tripod and waiting to capture the suburban home under the perfect moonlight. The image is black and white and no editing is done. Crewdson in his Twilight (Beer Dream) shoots a similar suburban scene, however, we can tell from the lighting and the atmospheric effects that this is staged like a movie scene and there is nothing real about it. Also, the people he places in his photography implies that there is a narrative story to his photographs beyond what is visible on the still image just like in a movie script. Because of the photograph’s surreal quality, we know that this photograph is edited many times and has an extensive post-production process with colour/atmosphere alterations to achieve the drama in Crewdson’s artistic vision.
Will photography capture the reality or it will be only fictional?
To determine whether a photograph will capture reality or will it be fictional depends on the context. For example, if an artist is using photography and inserting images or objects into another picture from his imagination just like in a painting, that would be fictional. They may partially capture reality but we, as the viewer, do not know that until we read more about the photograph in question.
When capturing reality, we think the image has to be accurate and genuine.  The main purpose of taking a realistic picture of an object or people is to achieve art and the true representation of the content. Photographers such as Sommer, Adams, and Klett, their artistic style of photography emerges from the presentation of a real situation, site, building or landscape. Their photographs are viewed as very realistic and raw because of the lack of alterations after and showing the stark reality of the context. Sommer, Adams and Klett’s style in photography evolved from capturing what was out there; natural and man-made, something we see with our naked eye. Therefore, we think this photographic style and creativity are much more appealing than fictional photography because we can see the originality which then leads us to believe in what we see in the image.
On the other hand, photographers such as ParkeHarrison, Muniz, and Crewdson took pictures that turned their imagination into reality, the medium giving them the freedom to turn whatever they imagined into a photograph. This is considered in our opinion fictional photography. For example, Crewdson’s fictional style expressed in photographs can be used for a movie ad, a book cover or to attract viewers in galleries who wonder what the photographer had in mind just like in a painting.
Any photo could be real or fictional. However, in the strange times that we live in where we are bombarded by fake images and news every moment, the realistic photographic style stands out as a genuine art form that we can relate to without being deceived.

10.4.3 Mastery Reflection
wevleThe research I did to lead me up to my design choices was, the reading material and a video we look at for reference of why infographic is important. The article Top 10 data visualization techniques, concept and methods in business. And the video From “huh?” to “a-ha”: The science of data visualization. Where the guy in the video speaks about “it’s never good to use pie chart because they get to clutter we information and they is hard to read” but in the reading it says pie charts can be useful to give some information. so with my design choice I used a pie chart in a brief way to display how many woman vs man in the East Side Milwaukee area down below will show some of my design choices.
Tumblr media
The connection was made through similar view point from both author about infographic and the way they should be presented the only different between the author is that one of the author wasn’t big on using pie chart and one was, one of the author said it’s never good to use pie charts and in the reading it said it is good to use them in certain situation. My conclusion from the connect that are being made with the way infographic should be used is to display the elements that word can show. The visual element like the percentage of something or how many people like what they saw in your design or rather they take a survey the percentage need to be shown for the ones who did so. That’s when a infographic comes into play. This is another logo I'm working on for this brand.
Tumblr media
One of the design problem I had was, am I using the right font and is the design noticeable as a sushi logo. I solve those problem by adding a bold font to give the design a unique look so it can look like it was a sushi restaurant. the other design problem I had was, not knowing rather a pie chart would be best in the infographic for some of the data that was being presented. Solution one I decided to us the pie chart and display a small amount of data on it and solution two I used more of a curvy font to fit what my design brief was saying about a sassy look. The image below is the font I went with because of the sassiness of the curvy font.

Innovative Thinking We all know that we do what we see trending. So, we can't say our work different this early on in our career. We doing innovative things with our work but we can speak about innovative thinking. We can also talk about how our work is different. We can't just use a fancy font and say that our design is different because the design idea in some way have been created in some kind of fashion, but we as designer can talk about how our work can be different with innovative thinking. The way I may alter my work in the future is to do more innovative thinking and to not only copy what I see other doing and I will be more creative with the design and building the brand design.

and the finish design is display in the next picture below.

The Twelve
Active Learning
My first takeaway is that we may not be on campus but we have to treat the online classes as we would if we was on campus. The Professor said, "We have to attend the classes". Put in the hours as we would do if we was on campus. Learning in the goto training is good because we can discuss the work and go over the work as a class. Take advantage of the offer we have before us. The goto was design so that we can get face time with the Professor and get to go over everything that we need to know and bring the class together.
Market Condition
Why is it important for us to learn? Design in the past years has come to the forefront. As a tool to differentiate in a crowed market. Froster innovations leverage, competitive advantage, craft user experience, and simplifying the complex. The power and value of the craft have been repeatedly showcased by media which spotlights companies like apple and target. Now every Major business publication includes features, monthly columns, or daily blogs about design. Even middle schooler learn how to use photoshop. Which open design profession to the full effect of globalization.
Hard and Soft Values
Hard values are something that are easily measure, and from a creative standpoint, to save money on material that cut fabrication/or production cost. Hard values consist of quantity of material saved, the total cost of the reductions, the number of unique visitor, the path and the followers. On the other hand soft values are hard to measure or can be difficult to measure. Some of these values are making and emotive connection with the design, brand loyalty, delight, or inspires. If the talking makes you feel good this is attributes that we are creating soft values. Building strong identities and a crafting message that resonate, but rarely clear-out or easily measure.
Innovative thinking
The Professor said you have to be creative when doing these projects. This article I read on innovative thinking say their thoughts on innovative thinking, is "doing something new, or doing something old in a new way.” By extension, the definition of innovative thinking would be, “to think up something new, or to think about something old in a new way.” This means take and old idea and put a twist to it. To reinvent it so the look of a old logo or design can fit better within the brand. The same old things in the same old ways will quickly find themselves left behind.
Survey Question
When doing the survey question don't ask does this color palette work or question in that area. Ask question like what is innovative about a particular part of the logo design? an article I read on giving the right survey question states, "Just like you start a building project with blueprints—and don't just begin pouring concrete whenever you decide you want a new building—your survey should start with the answers you need, and then you'll be better prepared to make the questions that will provide those questions. They should be some multiple choice, yes or no, and ordinal question".
Problem Solving
Problem solving is having the skills to solve the problem that defer your work. In a article I read it states that, "A fundamental part of every manager's role is finding ways to solve them. So, being a confident problem solver is really important to your success. Much of that confidence comes from having a good process to use when approaching a problem. With one, you can solve problems quickly and effectively. Without one, your solutions may be ineffective, or you'll get stuck and do nothing, with sometimes painful consequences". I connected with this article because it have a lot of meaningful details in it that we should know.
Survey Question
As designer we all have to be able to gain something from the survey question that we ask the intended audience. We got to know who our audience is, we have to know what speaks to the intended audience you have to know you focus group and how would they think. Did the message reach the intended audience? Give question that they can answer and give them something they can related to in the survey. Did the problem gets solve, how did it communicate with the audience, many time people don't like the question being too complicated and hard.
Design problem
Use the things you are unsure about as part of the design problem, because things that we are not sure about we as designer have to address them problem so why not solve them from the start and eliminate them problems so that you can have a good design and not be unsure about it. how we can transform our ideas to look like we want it but not be so obvious to the audience, but make it stand out as a nice design so people when they see it they will know it. I always use apple as a design that everyone will notice it when they see it because it have that distinctive look.
Visualization Techniques
The last concept came from the reading for this week, in this article it states," Concerning professional growth, development, and evolution, using data-driven insights to formulate actionable strategies and implement valuable initiatives is essential. Digital data not only provides astute insights into critical elements of your business but, if presented in an inspiring, digestible, and logical format, it can tell a tale that everyone within the organization can get behind." This is the information that stood out to me and I think this we very useful when it came to me getting my digital data.
Connecting
When connecting with the material we have to be able to do research on what connected us to the material. We have to use more than one source to see if it connecting information or do they disagree on what being said about the information, at the Tableau conference "he spoke about that pie charts is never good to use," but the reading for last week said in some cases you would want to use pie charts."My take away on this is if you doing something that a pie chart is best fitted use it, because sometime you can display a lot of information on a pie chart.
Innovative thanking
We all know that we do what we see trending.
Active Learning
We as graduate student should take note and be able to go back to them notes to say what we learn about a subject and how we use the things we learn to implement them in our live and how we can use these different technique to further our learning experience. Taking notes is part of the active learning process that we go through because we reading a book and not knowing what read afterwards is irrelevant to the reason we read the book. When engaging active learning we have to talk about what was the importance of the work and what you learning out of it.
The way the twelve concept help me throughout this month is that all of them let me see where I was at with my design and how I can improve on my designs. How to take my design to the next level, and how to get them to compete with the designs that in the industry. the things learn in this class I can use in the profession that I'm in and academic.

Can I tell if someone has ADHD?
The short answer is .. not without in depth testing.  However, people with and without ADHD have to suspect in order to be tested in depth.  So, what do we see externally that makes us go, “Uhrm?!?  I wonder?”
ADHD affects several areas of the brain either through genetics or through physical trauma.  Those areas are: working memory, short term memory, executive function, the emotional center, and the motor functions.  We will look at these components separate and together. To help, I will use a Multi-Tasking  GUI OS as an example .. windows, linux, apple, android, iphone .. to name a few.
The Basic Components
Working memory is used to store all current tasks.  This is equivalent to a program and the memory it has been allocated by the OS.  If you don’t have a lot of working memory, it gets swapped out with long term memory or a file on disk known as a swap file.
Short Term Memory is that area of the brain that manages the current tasks being performed. This is what allows you to multi-task.  Your mind switches from task to task and back with ease, and most importantly, without forgetting all the tasks that are running.
Executive Function performs many different functions, least of which is determine what is important. From an OS perspective, this watches for signals from all over the computer and switches in and out different programs to handle them.  For, example, when a program needs information stored in a swap file, the computer switches to a program that handles that function.  Then when the swap file responds, another program is run.
The Emotional Center (Amygdala) [1] is responsible for managing a person’s emotional response to internal and external stimuli.  Basic emotions of fight, flight, or stop give way to a variety of colored emotional responses depending the situation and environment. [2]
The Motor Cortex [3] controls a person’s actual arms and legs.  It is where the motherboard connects to the hardware, like the mouse, printer, monitor, ... now think about this in terms of a robot or drone.  Their motor cortex tells the various components that give the robot or drone the ability to move.
Their Failure
ADHD in adults is not like ADHD in children.  While all the same components are affected, their responses change over time. The biggest change is in the messages from the Emotional Center through the Executive function to the Motor Cortex, which controls fidgeting. Many adults with ADHD will state that their K12 teachers told them to stop fidgeting in class; pay attention; or apply themselves.  The problem is that the necessary circuitry needed to control self regulation of motor functions doesn’t exist.  While they can do it for a small period of time, once their attention switches off this process they can no longer control the fidgeting. As children mature into adults, enough neurons form to help take the stress of the system.
Per Dr. B Russell, the human brain in people with ADHD vs Normal People (NeuroTypical) is 3%.  It’s a significant amount of neurons lost. And, more importantly, it’s not enough for current imaging processes to be able to detect the difference.  However, we can see the difference when looking at how sugar is processed in a developing brain.  I have no data on whether this technique can be used in adults.
As mentioned, when a child focuses they can control their fidgeting.  Fidgeting, though, is only 1 symptom that can be expressed.  Children can hum, tap, rock, doodle, draw, day dream, or respond to every external stimuli around them.  While this may seem typical, the question you have to ask is, “Can they stop doing it without willing themselves to do it, for long periods of time?”  To give this some context, when learning to meditate, most students can only sit still for 10 minutes before they have to jump off the matt.  After practicing for years, most people can sit for hours at a time.  This is the difference between willing yourself to do something, and just being able to do something without effort.
Symptoms
Drive and Motivation -  come from the Emotional Center.  It tells the brain whether or not it likes something.  And, if it doesn’t like something, it tells the brain to get away from it.  If it likes something, it wants more of it.  From an outward perspective, this translates into an employee’s desire to either do the work or not do the work. Or get started with a task. Once people with ADHD get started, they may hyperfocus, because the brain starts to like the challenge of working on the task. So, if you interrupt them during this time, they will lose all that energy. And, then they will be stuck waiting for the drive to kick back in.
External motivators have no effect.  Forget about using Money, Write ups, or other punitive measures to motivate your employee. None of them will work.  People with ADHD have a high rate of turnover because of this very problem. We don’t fit the standard managerial mold.
Switching Tasks - The next problem that people with ADHD exhibit is an inability to switch tasks easily.  Or, be able to prioritize the importance of tasks. To someone with ADHD, everything is important.  Thus, if they are working on something, they have to tune out everything .. email, cell phones, social media, phone calls ... you name it.  Paradoxically, some people with ADHD thrive in this environment, since everything has the same weight, nothing is special, and they process every event as it arrives.
The inability to control their emotional center means that people with ADHD will have high highs and low lows based on events.  This is different from people with BiPolar disorder who also have emotions that swing, but have no associated event triggering them.  In ADHD, the loss of an item could cause depression, where winning a contract will cause them to be ecstatic.  However, to contrast this with someone normal, the state could be maintained for multiple days or switch as quickly as a new event arrives. [4]
A mother told her son that he was going to go to the pool the night before.  He was so excited, that he didn’t sleep that night. The next day his mother realized he was going to have a bad day.  He wanted to go to the pool so bad.  She took him. They got into the water, and then he started freaking out.  The other children didn’t understand what was happening and while they tried to show him how easy it was, it only caused further embarrassment. He is a good swimmer.
What happened here is that his emotional center fried his executive function. He was so excited, his executive function couldn’t tell his motor control what to do, and thus all he could do was flail.  He went home very embarrassed and disappointed that day.
A recommendation was made to not tell him that he was gong to the pool, but to spring in on it as a treat.  See if he could handle the sudden change in plans, and thus swim happily. [anonymous]
Forgotten Tasks - if no task is more important than another task, and all tasks have the same priority, then tasks will fall off the mental ToDo list.  This will hold especially true if an employee with ADHD finds something more interesting to do.
Recall - People have problems recalling all sorts of things.  It’s not that they are absent minded, it’s that when the information is needed, they can’t access it. Not that they didn’t learn it, or don’t have it, or ignored it. They physically can’t access it.  It’s akin to the deer in the headlights syndrome; or having the word you want to say stuck on the tip of your tongue, but you can’t remember it.  This situation will appear during highly emotional moments.
Time Blindness - If you were to prepare for a meeting that was to happen a week or two from now, you would have a mental lists of tasks in your head on what you needed to do.  A person with ADHD can’t do that.  They have lists everywhere.  Things to remind them of when they have to do X Y and/or Z and by when.  The farther the due date is, the less likely they are to work on the project.  The closer the due date, the more they are scrambling to get the project done.
Interest Based Motivation - While the Emotional Center was discussed as being the source of motivation, it has been mentioned that people with ADHD are always attracted to things they are interested in. And, if they are interested in the project, they hyper-focus on it (Or, In the Zone).  If you find that your employee always wants to be part of the NEW PROJECT, even though they are on another project. This is due to the fact that they’ve lost interest in the old project.  This, however, leads into the next problem.
Impulse Control - or lack of it.  Most people with ADHD see something shiny, new and fun, and have to have it.  They can’t get it out of their mind until they have it.  This can lead to social problems as well.
Social Problems - People with ADHD usually have social problems.  Take someone with who is unable to control their body during emotional Highs and Lows and put them in a social situation. They are awkward. Not knowing what to say, or saying what’s on their mind, and suddenly realizing that everyone is pissed off at them. This not only causes social rifts in the office, but everyone refuses to work with someone with ADHD because they are insensitive, or don’t have control over their thoughts.
Following Instructions - it’s not that people with ADHD can’t follow instructions, we can.  But what we have a hard time doing is following instructions that are buried in paragraphs.  If they are in list form, then we can check them off. (Remember that comment about lists, above. This should resonate by now.)
Tasks Take Longer - or do they?  If you had a stop watch to actually measure the amount of time someone completed a task, vs someone who started and stopped a lot took to complete the task, you might find that both parties took the same amount of time to complete the task. What the difference is, is when the task is completed.
No Association between Cause and Effect in Consequences - you can scold someone with ADHD all you want. Write Ups, Reports, threats of dismissal, you name it .. none of that will work, because their brain will just keep on doing what it has always done.  It’s not a coping mechanism where if they just tried harder they could fix the problem.  It’s a physical problem that can’t be fixed, because their brain doesn’t contain enough neurons to managed the world like yours does.
Wrapping Up
Due to a physical failure in the brain, people with ADHD have a physical handicap that they cannot overcome.  There is a lot of material concerning the topic, which resolves down to these 6 test topics:
Event Driven Emotions
Impulse Control
Interest Based Projects
Time Blindness
No Association between Cause and Effect in Consequences
Social awkwardness
It should be noted that several other abnormalities can also cause symptoms like ADHD, in part. But as a whole, ADHD is pretty much a unique grouping of symptoms.
In the next article, I’ll recommend some fixes for most of these problems, that will help you can your employee cope better and work better.

How to Generate Leads on Social Media For Your Business
How to Generate Leads on Social Media - Social media including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter have become gold mines for playing lead generation strategies.
Tumblr media
By leads, we mean indicators of interest left by potential customers during their searching or evaluating a product or service. The contact details left can be pursued to the level of sale. The impetus for social media lead generation is further buttressed by market research that says old ways of lead generation are dead and gone. At the same time, the emerging social media trends have given rise to so many lead generation companies. On the question, how to generate leads in social media or How to Generate Leads on Social Media we must know old methods such as cold-calling, static websites, and paid advertising is not working well. Today’s media-savvy buyers do not like them and want a more interactive approach. Consumers and high-level executives do not like marketing phone calls and sales teams are also averse to banking on cold calls for leads development. At the same time, actions in social media are soaring and it has turned a hub of buyers where at least 70 percent of users engage in a conversation with a peer before buying any product. This has made social media indispensable for all business in lead creation.
Use The Right Social Platform for Leads
The thumb rule in leads development at digital marketing is going after platforms where the audience resides most. That is why signing up for Instagram is not a good idea for getting B2B customers. Specific channels exist for all types of audience. Demographics need to be analyzed in knowing where the audience is most active. Instead of spreading out everywhere, targeting the B2B audience will be better. LinkedIn and Facebook have massive user bases. Sprout Social says the 18–29 age band dominates most social media outlets including LinkedIn. The Keyhole is a good tool in discovering the target audience at high presence areas. Just put a popular hashtag used by competitors and search it on Keyhole. In the results, there will be a “Top Sites” section showing the domains where the hashtag is in high use indicating target audience.
How to Generate Leads on Social Media (4 ESSENTIAL Tips for Beginners)

More Leads Essential for High ROI
Lead generation through social media or How to Generate Leads on Social Media is vital for sales and revenue. The marketing world is evolving fast and the main goal of marketing has to be linked with the goal of high ROI or return on investment. The merit of social media marketing is that results can be measured easily.
Tumblr media
That is how data has become the new king in marketing. Most marketers have to justify the marketing dollars a company is spending and know how they translate into valuable returns. At the core of any lead, generation-strategy is an objective to maximize ROI. But some marketers are yet to have clarity on optimizing ROI by choosing the most viable lead generation methods.
Top B2B Lead Generation Methods
In the business, to business sphere (B2B) digital lead generation techniques include SEO, email marketing, event marketing, and content marketing. Analytics can reveal the number of people reading emails and those visiting website and who is getting converted from relevant leads.
Measure the Effectiveness of Individual Channels
Quality of lead generating activities impacts the ROI. That is why marketers working on lead generation on social media often compare the results from different channels-- SEO, PPC, content marketing, email marketing, and social media to assess which channel is showing the capacity to attract new customers. They also examine how much resources each consumes in lead generation.
Cost Per Lead vs Cost Per Acquisition
Two ROI Indicators are supreme—Cost Per Lead (CPL) and Cost Per Acquisition (CPA). The cost efficiency is calculated by quantifying the marketing expense prior to analyzing metrics. Marketing cost covers all expenses such as personnel, events and paid channels.
Why Quality Social leads Matter?
According to an eMarketer analysis, B2B marketers require quality leads than a big quantity of unproductive leads. Lead generation works well only when targeting is effective. Before figuring out how to generate leads on social media let us examine the proven role of gated content. In generating leads from social media or How to Generate Leads on Social Media gated content is useful in wooing visitors and readers who are happy to oblige with contact information for accessing the content. Gated content takes the reader to a landing page via the link for accessing the content.
Is Your Social Media Marketing Working? How to Generate Leads on Social Media

Good Content
In getting new business leads from social media all you have to do is post relevant content pertaining to a product or industry and guide the readers to the landing page and make them fill up details for great leads. EMarketer study shows white papers, case studies and, webinars constitute useful content for lead generation as far as B2B marketers are concerned.
Automated Lead Generation Tools
Many types of social media lead generation software are available in the market. They are both user-friendly and easy solutions. Some marketers advocate ‘LinkedIn Sales Navigator Lite extension for Chrome’, also known as Rapportive as an extension providing core information about a prospect at the sidebar of G mail inbox. Callingly: This is another useful lead generation software tool with combo features of an online form and phone. As soon as a new lead comes up via a filled up form, calls can start automatically. Tools are also available for B2B lead generation strategies including the making of offers, call to action, landing pages and nurturing leads. The benefit of b2b lead generation tools is that they relieve the stress and hasten leads. In B2B marketing, SlideShare is like the Youtube and is great for online knowledge sharing. Easy presentations that are visually rich address pain points of a prospect and remedy with solutions. SlideShare’s ease of integration with other platforms helps in tapping faster insights regarding people’s response and level of interaction with a given content.
Run Contests
Contests play a big role in using social media as a platform for lead generation. But contests need to carry value for triggering people’s interest to turn them into future customers. For example, if a contest offers an iPhone or trip to Hawaii, people will gladly leave their contact information. This not because of any interest in the company or its product, but they want the valuable gift attached to the contest. Market Research at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Center has traced clear trends on how millennials follow various brands on Facebook and other social media.  It says 66 percent of social media users are seeking coupons or discounts, while 37 percent are looking for contests. For announcing and high lighting contests, tabs on the left side of Facebook Business Pages can be suitably leveraged for leads via social media.
Use Geo-targeted Search
Effective lead generation via local focus or geo-targeting has been demonstrated by many brick-and-mortar businesses such as stores and malls by dipping into social media’s potential for lead generation. Using tactics of geo-targeting in terms of social media posts and ads add customers for new products, special sales, discount offers. Social media-centric campaigns also bring audiences closer to their business. In terms of overall percentage, more businesses need to come on board for leveraging advantages of geotargeted social search to explore local leads. Geotargeting is best in social search and taking the business to right consumers and getting them on board to fill up the lead generation form.

Inbound Marketing vs. Outbound Marketing: Which Is The Best?
youtube
There is a scary amount of people who don’t know where to start with marketing. With the mass influx of information on the internet today, it can be quite overwhelming deciding what techniques to use to reach your customers.
And choosing to neglect marketing altogether is a huge no-no.
So, what marketing techniques can small businesses invest in to increase the traffic their business receives? Well, that starts with identifying the different types of marketing that are available.
Surprisingly, there is really only two forms of marketing out there today.
And that’s inbound marketing and outbound marketing.
Inbound Marketing vs. Outbound Marketing
You may or may not already be familiar with some of the methods of each.
For example, outbound marketing techniques include TV, radio, tradeshows, and the infamous outbound sales calls. These are all traditional methods that have been used in marketing for years.
Inbound marketing techniques on the other hand include search engine optimization, Ebooks, and even blogs like this one.
But which one is a more effective method of attracting leads?
To answer this, we have to take a closer look at each type of marketing and how they can provide value to your business.
Seeing as no two businesses are the same, it’s important to identify what means of marketing YOUR business can specifically use to generate the most traffic.
As an agency who’s generated millions of hits while testing billboards, blogging, cold calling, and social media, we’re no stranger to the functions of both inbound and outbound marketing methods.
In this blog, we will highlight the key attributes to each method and ultimately, help you decide which route is best for your business.
With that said, let’s jump in by defining inbound vs outbound marketing.
What Is Inbound and Outbound Marketing?
Inbound Marketing
Inbound marketing is the set actions you put into place that help bring in leads to you. More simply put, it is when you are pitching value before sales. And usually you’re coming from a place of high value.
This method allows your leads to learn about what your business has to offer and the value you can provide before you try to sell them on anything.
Imagine you’re a customer in the market of buying a new car.
When you first walk into a dealership or even do research online, you don’t want a bunch of new car ads being thrown in your face.
Maybe you don’t want to buy a car today, but you do want to know the difference in the engines, the technology, the features, and anything else that you want in a car.
You’re purpose of car shopping today is not to actually purchase a car, but to learn more about the options you have available. This is so you can make the best decision on what vehicle is right for you. After all, a car is a big purchase.
Then maybe in the future, if a particular business has provided you with enough value on the cars you are looking for, you will go to them when you’re finally ready to buy a car.
As a business owner, you want to meet your customers where they are. That means going with the flow of their needs and identifying what is important to them.
So they may not be looking to purchase today but that doesn’t mean you can’t encourage them to purchase in the future.
On the other hand, outbound marketing is the opposite.
Outbound Marketing
Outbound marketing is simply when you are selling before providing value. You are promoting a sale at the very beginning of an interaction with a lead.
Usually, with outbound marketing you’re coming from a place of need as opposed to value.
Let’s imagine that same car scenario.
Imagine you are in the market to buy a new car. However, this time it’s more of an urgent need because your old car broke down on you recently and you have no transportation.
In this instance, a car salesman trying to sell you a car would be a good thing because you are actively looking to buy a new car.
And on the flip side, this is a win for the car salesman because they are encouraging the sale of a product a customer needs.
In short, if your product fulfills a strong desire or need, then you’ll likely earn their business.
Anytime your consumers have a problem, you want to be able to solve that problem. That’s how you build connections and covert leads into customers.
So, we’ve covered the basic definitions of inbound and outbound marketing and looked at a scenario where either can be used. But you may be asking “what is the difference between the two? Why should I choose one over the other?”
Alright, we know you’re eager to get the answers to these questions, so let’s discuss that next.
What Is the Difference Between Inbound and Outbound Marketing?
Now some people may tag social media as inbound marketing, however that may not always be the case.
That’s because it’s all about how you use the channels. In some situations, social media can be used as effective outbound marketing. And other outbound methods can be used as inbound methods as well.
For example, Facebook is a massive social media platform. Millions of users are on Facebook and many businesses are too.
But if you’re only posting about how “your business” can help them then you’re really doing outbound marketing.
This is because you are trying to sell your business before providing value to your leads. If you find your business page mainly consisting of “Buy Now” ads, then this is a key sign that you’re performing outbound marketing.
And this type of method may not be most effective for your business.
On the reverse, if you’re using Facebook to help your audience breakdown definitions in your industry, explain certain topics, and give insightful tips, then you’re using inbound marketing.
You are providing value to your audience before you are trying to sell to them.
Other example channels that are outbound in their nature are press releases and really any type of advertising because they are more actively trying to sell something or get more leads.
Other examples of some channels that are inbound in nature are public speaking, video content, and books. All these methods work to provide meaningful information to your audience that will encourage them to do business with you.
Inbound vs. Outbound Marketing: Which Is Best?
Okay, now that we understand inbound vs outbound marketing let’s finally try to determine which one is best for your business.
With that, we have to look at the main pros and cons of each method.
Outbound Marketing Pro
A Pro of outbound marketing is speed. If you know how to reach your audience then you can quickly start selling.
With this speed, you’ll be able to generate more new business in a shorter amount of time. As long as you know who to target, you’re all set.
The only thing holding you back would be your capacity and the amount of people you have the ability to reach. But despite that, you really have the ability to reach your audience directly.
Outbound Marketing Con
Now for the cons. The biggest con of outbound marketing is cost.
Usually, you’ll have to spend a lot of money to reach your audience and you have to keep spending money to reach new people.
As a small business, you may not have the budget to continuously spend on advertising your content and reaching your audience. This is especially true if your audience isn’t in urgent need of your product or service. You would be spending money and not getting a return, which can hurt your ROI in the long run.
Therefore, the stakes are high with outbound marketing because you have to spend more money and hit people when their in that sweet spot of needing your product (like in the car scenario we mentioned earlier.)
Inbound Marketing Pro
Now, as you may expect, the PRO of inbound marketing is cost. This is because you are spending far less money trying to reach your audience because they typically come to you.
You can start creating valuable content now, and in the long run you’re cost will be extremely low. That’s because the content you create today can still be valuable to someone YEARS into the future.
This means you are creating a compounding effect. And unlike outbound marketing, your inbound marketing efforts won’t expire.
For example, we still have blogs from 2013 that people are still reading. These blogs are filled with insightful information that many business owners have found valuable. They have been able to apply the tips we provide into their business’s and will be able to now and in the future.
Valuable information like this is ultimately what has helped businesses grow in the long run.
Inbound Marketing Con
We mentioned the main pro of outbound marketing was speed, but in regards to inbound marketing, speed is a major con.
It can take years before you start seeing the compounding benefits of inbound marketing. Yes, you can write a great blog, but if your audience doesn’t see it until months down the line, then this could also negatively impact your ROI in the long term.
Thus, the major deciding factors are between inbound marketing and outbound marketing are speed and cost.
Do you want to focus more on the ability to get more leads in a shorter amount of time or do you want to acquire leads at a lower cost?
You have to make a decision…But it doesn’t have to be one or the other.
That’s right. The best decision for any business is to do both!
This is because when you combine outbound with inbound then you can accelerate your growth. The two work pretty well on their own, but together they are a powerhouse duo for your marketing efforts.
Having said that, let’s look at some examples of how a business would combine inbound and outbound marketing effectively!
Inbound and Outbound Marketing Together
Say for instance you are selling a virtual remote training membership.
Here’s what you could do to combine both inbound and outbound methods in your marketing.
You can create social media posts with tips around working out and staying healthy. This content would serve as your inbound marketing portion.
Then, you can advertise those posts. This would serve as your outbound marketing and would help boost the impressions your social media posts receive.
But maybe you want to be a little more aggressive.
So you create a video about your passion for personal training. This is inbound marketing.
Then, you create a retargeting ad promoting that video which targets everyone who has engaged with your posts. This is outbound marketing.
This way you’re hitting people with valuable content fast!
Now, let’s look at one more combination.
Say for instance your company sells mattresses and you have the goal to do just that.
Here’s how you could combine inbound and outbound marketing to achieve that goal.
You can create a blog about sleeping and joint pains for your audience to gain information about their sleeping problems. This blog is an inbound tactic.
After that, you can advertise that blog on your social media channels like Facebook. This is the outbound portion.
But you want to be a little more aggressive in your marketing,
So you can create a video commercial about how your mattresses help your customers sleep better. This provides valuable information to your audience and is an inbound marketing method.
Then, for your outbound method you create a retargeting ad of everyone who visits that blog.
In turn, these two methods will provide you with a highly engaged audience to sell to!
The main takeaway to remember when combining the two methods is you have to first create a piece of valuable content that will interest your audience. Then, once you do that, you have to use ads to promote that content you created.
This is how you will see the most qualified traffic flock to your business in a short amount of time.
In conclusion, inbound and outbound marketing are extremely important. The key is to use them in combination with one another to create a strategy that provides value and allows you to sell!
We know taking the first step in marketing can be hard. But that’s because you don’t want to start in one direction and wind up having to turn around.
That’s why it’s really important to think carefully about your approach to marketing. When you do that it will lead you to the best methods for your business.

This is not much different from promoting to strangers online. To get started, ask your immediate family and friends to try out your products. You could even provide free samples. You can also reach out to your personal network on social platforms like Facebook, where you’ll likely be connected to old classmates and colleagues.
The key here is to know your products inside and out, be aware of what problems they solve, and sell people on their benefits. Make sure to follow up with anyone interested and take the time to thoroughly answer their questions.

2. Start a Blog
A blog offers a way to increase brand awareness and bring new traffic to your website. It’s also a platform where you can better expose your products to your audience. The more visitors you can bring to your site, the higher the probability you will make a sale.
Some examples of content you can create on your blog include:
Articles that demonstrate how to achieve a goal using your products
Roundup posts that showcase your best solutions for solving a specific problem
FAQs that answer questions people who might be interested in your products will have
To improve your success rate, you’ll also want to do some keyword research. Organically working in some relevant keywords can help your posts rank higher in search engines.

3. Build a List of Email Subscribers
Email marketing is a proven tactic for customer acquisition and retention. This means it can be a core part of your e-commerce marketing strategy.
Signups for newsletters generally indicate interest in your brand. Therefore, an email list can generate one-off sales and drive repeat purchases from customers whose interest you’ll keep active by sending them regular (and relevant) content.
Tools like Jackmail (which enables you to send automated emails) and Mailchimp (which provides email templates and tools for tracking metrics) can help you create and manage your own newsletters easily.

4. Solicit Help From Social Influencers
As a new brand, it’s vital to keep costs low. One cost-effective strategy for getting your first sale is working with influencers – or to be more specific, micro-influencers.
Micro-influencers give you access to small, targeted audiences who already have a connection with the influencer and trust them. These influencers actively cultivate engaged and loyal followers and can get your product in front of that audience with their seal of approval.
This is a worthwhile investment because the costs involved are typically low. That also means you can work with multiple influencers to reach increasingly larger audiences as your budget increases.
The first step to getting started with this type of marketing is to search for influencers within your niche. You can explore relevant accounts on social media to locate candidates, or use a dedicated influencer database like Socialbakers.

5. Host Giveaways
Everyone loves free things. When you’re just starting out, you can use this simple fact to your advantage to create awareness of your business and products.
Hosting contests and giveaways can bring much-needed attention and help you build trust with potential customers. You don’t have to start big, nor do you need to give out your most expensive products. However, you do need to be willing to offer a few starter products for free.
Giveaways can help you generate interest in your brand, as you’re drawing the attention of both participants and winners to your paid offerings. Participants may also share your products or information about the giveaway itself with their friends and networks.
Services like ViralSweep and Gleam help you run contests and giveaways online while keeping things simple and professional. There are also dedicated WordPress plugins you can try out, such as RafflePress.
6. Give Discounts
Unlike giveaways, discounts do not require you to give away your products entirely for free. Plus, discounts may make it easier to persuade a potential customer to buy from you.
It can be difficult for new buyers to justify purchasing from your store at full price, especially when you have no established reputation or past customer reviews. Offering some of your best or most affordable products at a reasonable discount can be a strong incentive, reducing the risks and enticing visitors to give you a chance.
Just remember that when setting up discounts, you’ll need to take production and shipping costs into account and make sure you don’t overextend your budget. It’s also a good idea to create sales with time limits, which play to visitors’ Fear Of Missing Out (FOMO).

7. Simplify Your Site’s Design
By simplifying your website’s design, you can make it easier for potential buyers to use your site without any hassle. This is key for turning interested visitors into e-commerce conversions (in other words, your first sales!).
One way to simplify your site’s design is by reducing the number of products displayed on its pages. You want to ensure that your site’s interface is not cluttered, and that a visitor doesn’t have to jump through many hoops to find what they want. This is one reason to have a prominent search bar and clear menu options for easy navigation.
You’ll also want to use a lot of blank space to help focus visitors’ attention on your Calls to Action (CTAs). That can mean removing distracting and unnecessary elements and avoiding the temptation to include too much information on each product page.
Finally, keep in mind that mobile phones far surpass desktops and laptops for making online purchases. Therefore, you’ll want to ensure that your store is fully responsive.

8. Build Your Brand on Social Media
Building a brand makes it easier for existing customers to stay connected. It also helps potential customers find and learn about your business and the people behind it. To this end, you’ll want to create accounts on major social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and even TikTok.
By using social media, you can tap into audiences that are already using those platforms. You can grab their attention and create positive feelings towards your brand while creating and sharing relevant (and engaging) content.
Attracting an audience through social media is a topic worth several posts of its own. In short, you’ll want to begin by doing some audience research, and deciding what platforms to focus on. Then you can start sharing content and promoting your products, linking followers back to your e-commerce site.
Also, don’t forget that many social media platforms have groups formed around specific interests and topics. Joining these groups can help you connect with relevant potential customers and generate interest in your band. A great place to start is by signing up for and posting on Facebook Groups that are centered on your niche or industry.

9. Market to B2B Clients
An alternative way to generate your first sales is by selling to other businesses, rather than (or along with) directly to individual customers. Ultimately, your goal is to get your products into buyers’ hands, whomever they might be.
This can be done by selling to wholesale retailers, either on a local, national, or even international level. Selling to businesses might not result in high profit margins, but it is a way to get your products in front of the right consumer audience. Once you have enough brand awareness, you can start to target customers directly.

10. Refine Your Product Descriptions
You’ll only make a sale if your site’s visitors understand your products and what benefits they offer. This means creating clear and detailed product descriptions. It’s important to include all the relevant details and specifications, as well as high-quality images and other media.
Some users might research products beforehand and only visit your store to make a purchase. However, others will begin their buyer’s journey on your site and will be entirely dependent on the information you provide.
You want to ensure that those users can learn everything they need to know about your products without having to leave your site to find more information. To make that happen, you’ll want to find out what questions your target audience is asking, and include those details for your products.
11. Streamline Your Checkout Process
You may have generated interest in your products, but people aren’t buying because they’re frustrated by your checkout process. For that reason, you’ll want to do everything you can to reduce cart abandonment.
If users have to create an account or are forced to answer too many questions during checkout, they may decide it isn’t worth continuing. Each additional step is a chance for your customers to change their minds about following through on their purchases.
One practical step to take when streamlining your checkout process is asking only for essential information, such as billing and shipping details. You may also want to include a progress indicator to let customers know how close they are to being done.

12. Attend a Trade Show
Of course, there are also ways to market your brand offline, such as by attending trade shows. You can likely find both regional and national events that are relevant to your niche and audience. There are plenty of sites that compile trade shows by industry and enable you to search for them, such as 10times, EventsEye, and TradeFairDates.
At these events, you’ll get to meet both individual customers and wholesale vendors. You can drum up interest by offering free samples, exclusive coupons, or promo codes to any visitors who come by your booth. While it takes a little more work than some of the other options on this list, trade shows are an excellent way to get some exposure and start building relationships.

Evaluation
The pandemic affected my mental health, as in addition to the general anxiety everyone was feeling, I also could not relax. I could not attend any social gatherings or do the normal activities I usually do outside of my university work.  Printing became a major issue as I did not own one. I did not have access to the basic stationary at university that I normally would, like fine line pens and paints. My budget constraints also limited how much I could purchase on my own.
My motivation to work was affected, as it is easier to work in a creative environment like university, where you can discuss ideas with colleagues and university staff. I could not use the print room facilities, dark room and photography studios to advance my experiments. Given the opportunity, I would have experimented with type blocks, dark room techniques and professionally photographed my work. I had to use mockups to showcase my work as I could not print the final outcomes. I also was not able to receive support from I.T. Technicians to create AR posters like I had originally planned. I overcame these issues by showing the concepts as a digital submission, using miscellaneous mediums and tools I had around the house to create my prints, borrowing a relative’s old printer and ordering ink online. I had to plan what materials I would order so that they would arrive in as few deliveries as possible and I took into account that everything would take longer to arrive due to the pandemic.
Throughout this module I learned about and experimented with many design methods and processes. I will now be evaluating the materials and techniques that helped me develop my ideas. The relevant research and theory that underpinned my approach was reading books and articles about the Fluxus art movement and the artists that took part in it.
These artists include John Cage, Joseph Beuys and Nam Jun Paik. I also looked at designers outside of this movement, such as Wolfgang Weingart and contemporary designers like Tom Tebby and Patrick Thomas. These artists have many things in common and all had a major impact on the development of my project. The artists I chose to research used mixed media in their own unique ways. Patrick Thomas, Tom Tebby and Wolfgang Weingart overlay different mediums and shapes onto each other, while still maintaining a visual harmony. They have a loose workstyle but also follow a grid layout in some areas of their composition. John Cage, Nam Jun Paik and Joseph Beuys all allowed artistic choices to be decided by chance. This is something that I applied throughout my work and allowed me to work outside of my comfort zone to take my processes as far as I could.
My best ideas came from trying new processes, developing ideas as far as I could and discussing them in my one to one tutorials with my tutor. Throughout my period of experimentation, I constantly reflected back to the brief and my original goal. This goal was to visualize sound. I experimented with mostly sound software like Spectroscopes, Sonic visualizer, PhonoPaper and Adobe After Effects Trapcode plugin. I also learned how to use unfamiliar software like Adobe Aero and Cinema 4D.
Cutting and pasting became a major part of this project, as I took inspiration from the artists I researched. It encouraged me to find new ways to recreate compositions, experiment with new techniques and take on the element of chance. The particular inspirations for cutting, pasting and overlaying were Tom Tebby and Patrick Thomas.
My most successful experiments were changing my analogue creations to digital forms and then giving it life with the use of video editing. Video editing allowed me to push ideas and processes further, and bring back the true nature of analogue (as this is usually lost if left in digital form). The use of video gave my analogue shapes movement. The mediums and techniques that helped me develop my experiments were Indian ink, acetate, tracing paper, AR, 3D manipulation, motion graphics, animation and installation. The software I used for my experiments were Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Aero and Cinema 4D.
After transforming my data sculpture to AR, I was then inspired to make the shapes move with sound. This turned out to be an unsuccessful experiment using Cinema 4D. Due to the pandemic I was unable to use any of the Macs that ran Cinema 4D comfortably. My computer at home was not powerful enough to run the software. This led me to find another alternative which was Adobe After Effects. This was much easier to run on my computer and allowed me to freely experiment with my still forms. I was able to create particles and move them using a plugin called Trapcode. By creating a new form of typography, I was able to successfully answer the brief by conveying the meaning of the song through my type. However, I did feel like it lacked a campaign aspect. In the future, I would pursue the concept of dissecting sections of typography (of the positive lyrics of the song) onto billboards, posters and newspapers around different cities. Once put together the final lyrics would be revealed. Another way I would improve, is ensuring all the letters were of the same size, since some of the letters like V and W were larger than the rest. This happened because the process of constructing each letter from breaking down my data sculpture and Indian ink patterns was complicated and time consuming.
Secret 7”
‘Come Over” is a song by The Internet. The song is about difficulties faced in a relationship. The artwork was inspired by the seven deadly sins and the art style of the celebrated movie Spirited Away.  The programs I used to illustrate were Procreate and Photoshop. The textures and uneven patterns were influenced by the art style linocut. The artist that heavily inspired the style was Junji Ito. Junji Ito creates art for horror Mangas. Surrealism and gore strongly contribute to his illustrations as he likes to portray madness and inhumanity. His use of black and white also inspired the colour scheme I used for the main characters of my design. I decided on a red background to compliment the black and white characters and make the white of the heart stand out. I also used red as a marketing strategy to make it stand out more on display. When brainstorming I went with the concept of paranoia in a relationship and the idea of drugs and alcohol bringing out your inner voices and desires. There was a great connection to be made with Spirited Away, as I modelled my main figures on the character ‘No Face’, since in the movie this character represented emotions. I complimented this idea with the concept of the seven deadly sins as often it is when people allow their selfish desires or ‘sins’ to overpower them that problems in relationships occur. I reflected the seven deadly sins by creating seven figures, giving each a separate identity (to reflect each sin) by changing their faces and varying the lino print patterns (replicated digitally). Having the figures surrounding the heart illustrates clearly that they are the conflicting emotions of a person. In the future I would use actual lino print as it would give me a better texture than simply trying to replicate it digitally. Due to the pandemic, I was not able to do this as I did not have the equipment. I also would have portrayed the seven deadly sins more clearly by changing the overall shape of the figure’s bodies rather than just their faces.
Man vs Machine Isolation brief
The goal of this brief was to present isolation using unique visuals. My installation focuses on the melancholy thoughts one experiences during isolation and the feeling of suffocation. I was heavily inspired by video artist Nam Jun Paik. His abstract forms are displayed in a glitch format. One of the main features of his work is portraying a narrative through TV montages. He uses a lot of line patterns and shapes and creates harmony between them. These shapes are often shown rhythmically flashing in the video montages. Paik also uses humanoid characters and political figures in his work. I took inspiration from these elements of Paik’s work and applied it to my own installation. Like Paik I portrayed my message through a video montage and also used lines, shapes and vibrating particles. I tried to replicate a hospital heart rate machine to symbolize unbalanced mental health during isolation. Some of the shapes I used would rhythmically flash on the screen and the video would glitch in the style of Paik. Patrick Thomas was another artist that influenced this project. He would project videos onto old buildings to see how the video would be distorted when played on an uneven surface. I also projected the video onto a textured wall and myself. This also links with Paik’s work as instead of featuring a political or humanoid figure I chose to incorporate myself in the installation. This was because the installation reflected my own feelings about isolation. To further emphasise this, the video montage itself contained a window which showed a video recording of me. I incorporated the new skills that I taught myself during isolation, into the installation. For example, music production, creating original typography and 3D animation and sound art. I created the music in Fl Studio, animated in Adobe After Effects and filmed using a Canon DSLR camera. Since the concept of the installation was the feeling of suffocation caused by isolation, I had initially planned to wrap my face in cling film to physically reflect this, as well as allow the wrinkled texture to distort the projected video. However, this was not effective as you could not see it clearly against the background I had in my home. The next idea was creating an animation of a character falling but I felt it did not communicate the idea of suffocation clearly. In the end I decided on something simple, which was to wear a face mask. This clearly shows the coronavirus situation and there is enough texture to distort the patterns in the video. In the future I would like to record an installation in a professional studio. I would have liked to work with other creatives to design a performance, similar to the interdisciplinary nature of the Fluxus art movement. This performance would be a type of dance to communicate suffocation in an abstract way.
BCU print club/Type builder
BCU Print club is a workshop where students and staff get together once a month to create print. There is a new theme each session. Going to these print clubs allowed me to experiment, gain ideas and collaborate with other students. These workshops greatly benefited the development of my work and helped me meet my briefs, like the D&AD and typography manual workbook briefs. The idea of cutting and pasting an element and giving it a new form and narrative, was inspired by these workshops. I applied this when dissecting my wavelength typography and cutting the typography into data sculpture pieces. Due to the pandemic, the BCU workshop was continued remotely, online. It focused on the theme of ‘Together’ and not feeling alone during these tough times. I was able to test and apply new techniques and patterns made using Indian ink.
Type builder was the last workshop at the print club, and it was done in collaboration with the Northern School of Art. The goal was to create a message of hope using the shapes they provided. This could be based on a genre of music or film. I decided to submit an analogue submission where I applied skills from my typography manual workbook. I chose the lyrics from Demon days by the Gorillaz. In the future I would submit more work with a variety of designs and processes, showing clear influence from my research during this final year module as well as my entire university experience. I will also continue to participate in any online workshops BCU hosts after I graduate. This will allow me to keep in contact with the directors and allow me to share new findings I have discovered outside of university.
Open Collab
Open Collab is a remote, real time workshop between creatives worldwide, run by Patrick Thomas. This was the first session and focused on creating art that strongly links to hope and unity, in response to the pandemic. I was able to test my Indian ink experiments and combine them with my data forms. This gave me an insight into the new forms I could create. I created Indian ink patterns with the use of household tools such as old brushes, bamboo sticks, string and pallet knives. I scanned them and manipulated them with Photoshop. If given the chance to do this project again I would have incorporated other mediums such as acrylic and masking tape, and created textures by scratching into the materials. This would create a more interesting visual narrative.
Collaborative project with Isaac Lines
This is a collaborative project I have done with another visual communication student. The aim of the project was to reflect isolation through a series of posters. I was inspired by the cyberpunk world. The theme I chose was cyborg figures, combined with the concept of media consumption. This is because although technology has allowed us to stay inside safely (working from home, ordering online etc.), it has also become an addiction. It is common knowledge that overloading on media makes mental health issues worse. Often when you see families in isolation, everyone is looking at their devices. The passive media consumption for hours on end stops you from thinking deeply, interacting with someone in person and being present in the moment. Instead you are in an entertainment induced stupor just like a robot. Although illustration is not my greatest strength, I enjoyed challenging myself despite it being a tedious process. I made this task enjoyable for myself by incorporating my experimental type and merging the worlds of analogue and illustration together. I chose to go for a red and black theme as this colour scheme symbolized danger but still complimented the white and black colours. This also helped highlight the details of the illustration. I created these illustrations using Procreate and created the background using Photoshop. In the future I would consider digital painting to give my illustrations more life. I would also experiment with unfamiliar techniques such as animating these figures.
Experimental typography manual workbook
This is a personal brief. Continuing on from my D&AD Google project, I wanted to carry on exploring and creating new forms of typography. I wanted to challenge my creative thinking by generating various combinations of patterns. Sentences and shapes were printed out onto tracing paper. I would set myself a new sentence, focusing on the Fluxus movement.  I experimented with different languages, patterns, textures and colours. This was to express the international and interdisciplinary nature of Fluxus art. I made over 100 prints which I have presented in my sketchbook. In the future I would have used other mediums to create distorted typography using film, a dark room, cyanotype and type blocks. The pandemic prevented me from experimenting with these processes.
MA RCA application/ Stuttgart
Throughout third year I was always considering my next step after graduation. Print is something I have always been passionate about. Creating textures and combing them with digital elements, gave design a whole new meaning for me. As I delved deeper into the world of print, I found myself wanting to constantly educate myself about new processes and techniques. I came to the decision that I wanted to do a MA program. I applied for the Royal College of Arts, Experimental MA Programme. The requirements I had to meet for the application was submitting 5 projects (including no more than 10 pages about the processes), a motivational section to say why I wanted to do an MA, a verbal video presentation of myself and my creative journey, and a reference done by Luke Tonge who is the director of Birmingham Design Festival. I had problems receiving a notification regarding the outcome of my application, most likely due to the pandemic. I sent various emails and I still received no reply. I addressed this situation to my tutor. She suggested that I continue to wait but to also think of an alternative. I was recommended to look at doing an MA in Stuttgart, Germany at the State Academy of Fine Arts. This course was taught by Patrick Thomas. I was introduced to a previous BCU Visual communication student who is doing this course in Germany. I asked him various questions regarding the course format, living conditions, scholarships and networking. I received promising feedback and I already know from past experience that I can easily adapt to studying in another country (I have already completed an Erasmus exchange scheme during my second year in Belgium). Having Patrick Thomas teach the course would also greatly benefit me, as I would want to gain knowledge from someone who does print for a living and hosts exhibitions globally.
Overall Project Evaluation
My design strategy started off with a general idea I had for the concept. I then undertook research to make the concept come to life and start experimenting. After the initial experimentation, I undertook further research to inform the next set of experiments and this research included online tutorials, 1 to 1 session with tutors and peers, email interviews, and reputable sources such as books and articles. I decided not to include any surveys. This is because after looking at the qualitative data models I realised it would be more appropriate for this data to come from me and the artists I researched, rather than surveying for example my university colleagues. These projects were about expressing my own ideas, not representing a group like in previous projects (e.g my contextual studies feminist project). The research into artists that I undertook was sufficient qualitative data in my opinion, and this kind of data was what helped me develop my idea. The research helped me understand patterns and textures, helped provide an understanding of the context of different design strategies and movements like Fluxus art, as well as analysing the work of selected artists. It allowed me to develop my experiments as I went along and be inspired by different aspects of the artist I chose to research. I made sure to use trustworthy and credible books and articles for this research and included texts that were transcripts of interviews with the artists, for example John Cage and Wolfgang Weingart. I knew of a local artists Tom Tebby and reached out to him via email for an interview request. After looking at the quantitative date model, I realised gathering numerical facts and statistics was not necessary as qualitative data was more relevant for this project, for the reasons explained earlier. Quantitative data would not help develop the project or add anything significant. I dealt with ethical issues in my projects. For the D&AD- Google & HMCT brief, the ethical issue was giving hope through difficult times (especially the current pandemic). Another key ethical issue was equality and international collaboration, and this was explored through the research I undertook for the Fluxus art movement (which informed many of my projects, as explained earlier). This art movement was unique in the way it emphasised an international and interdisciplinary approach. The fact that all races were represented showed their common language of equality. This was particularly special considering the movement originated in the 1960s, in a time where equal rights was not given the status that it has today. Examples of where I portrayed equality in my briefs were in my typography manual workbook where I used a non- English language (strongly linking to the Fluxus movement), and in the Man vs Machine Isolation brief which raised awareness for mental health.  I also illustrated the dangers of media consumption during isolation in the collaborative project with Isaac Lines. Before I started the module, I had spent time in Belgium for my Erasmus exchange (uni 2nd year) and China for my CRCC Asia internship (in the summer before 3rd year). These experiences were instrumental in my personal and professional development, and directly impacted the projects completed in this module. This is because working in a professional environment enabled me to independently complete projects, without the help of tutors but still taking on feedback from colleagues. Working with different nationalities helped me understand the value of looking at the work of non-English speaking artists and researching international art movements like Fluxus. I created a 3D installation in Belgium for my final year project which helped me construct the video and installation for the Man vs Machine Isolation brief. I created logos and motion graphics in China which helped me to come up with different design iterations. This helped me to develop different patterns and experiments in my D&AD Google & HMCT brief and typography manual workbook brief. Overall, although it was difficult creating work during this pandemic, I have proven to myself that I can overcome unforeseeable obstacles and learn new skills. For example, using scrap materials and mediums found at home to create print, pushing experiments forward digitally by manipulating them in various formats, using Adobe After Effects, creating AR sculptures, animating sound with shapes, making music, creating a home installation and combining my typography processes with illustration. My favorite part of this project was seeing how I developed my professional brief (D&AD) into a personal project (typography manual workbook). I was able to further experiment with different mediums, techniques and textures in order to create a body of work. This includes over 100 design iterations. My time at university has taught me that although I am capable of logo designing, branding and editorial work, it is Print that is something I am invested in and wish to pursue in the future. This will be accomplished by doing an MA programme at RCA or Stuttgart, Germany, or somewhere similar.

What is Conventional Marketing?
Conventional marketing is nothing different as it is a form of marketing to which at one level or the other we have been introduced. Conventional marketing is a form of marketing that is difficult to avoid. Over the past few decades, traditional marketing may have progressed, but the essential elements stay the very same. Why choose digital marketing over conventional marketing?
Conventional marketing can be too costly to overlook for some brands, particularly well-established ones with a big offline following. However, digital marketing can be a saviour for the many small companies that are attempting to make a stamp on a shoestring budget. That is why the influence of digital marketing is leveraged by many old and new businesses, and the marketing funnel is rethought.
